Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PG5 - Warrington Oktoberfest is back, and it will be held once again at Warrington's Parr Hall later this year. More info at www.warringtonoktoberfest.org.uk
The event is organised by Rotary Warrington, with all profits from the festival going to good causes.
A must-visit for beer aficionados, the festival will include dozens of speciality brews, imported ales, and drinks of varying strengths and tastes.
There will also be a gin and fizz bar, a cider bar, and a driver's bar available during the event, too.
Warrington Oktoberfest will be held at Parr Hall between October 12-14.
There will be traditional Oktoberfest-style food available throughout the event, which is set to be supplied by Warrington's 'best for burgers 2023' Cafe at the End of the Universe.
Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, one of the event's organisers - Samantha Bridger - said that the whole group has been 'blown away' by the support provided by sponsors of the event.
She said: All our sponsors are amazing, and they help with everything from the set up, to equipment, money, and even the racking used for beer kegs.
In terms of ticket costs, Samantha said: We are delighted to say that tickets are £10, which we think is phenomenally cheap, and we're selling them in advance - which includes a small booking fee.
Tickets will be available on the door, too, if we have any left.
There will be live music performed across the event, with the following bands playing across the festival:
The Pink Pumps
Fairchild Robinson
The Red River Band
It has also been announced that drinks can be purchased via a token system.
For any cask ale that is marked at less than five per cent alcohol content, it costs one green token per half pint.
Ales marked as stronger than five per cent cost one yellow token per half pint.
No-alcohol drinks, plus prosecco and gins are marked at costing one yellow token.
For £10, attendees will receive five green tokens, or 11 tokens for £20.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYF - This image shows an off-peak day return railway ticket and collection receipt laid over a printed York to Liverpool timetable, illustrating everyday UK rail travel and fare systems. The ticket details include journey validity, fare value, class of travel, and date, reflecting the complexity of British rail ticketing and pricing structures.
Printed timetables and paper tickets remain part of the passenger experience despite the growth of mobile and digital ticketing. The combination of timetable pages and ticket documentation highlights themes of public transport usage, travel planning, and intercity rail connections across northern England, including routes via Warrington.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK transport, rail policy, commuting, travel costs, public services, and mobility, as well as conceptual illustrations of journeys, schedules, and everyday travel administration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WP4 - This photograph shows a bright yellow directional sign for the Neighbourhood Weekender festival, positioned on a grassy verge in Warrington, Cheshire. The sign features bold black text reading Neighbourhood Weekender, accompanied by a pedestrian symbol and a right-pointing arrow, clearly indicating the walking route towards the event location.
Neighbourhood Weekender is a large outdoor music festival held annually in Warrington, typically in Victoria Park, and has become a significant fixture in the North West of England's live music calendar. The use of high-visibility yellow colouring and simple graphic symbols reflects practical event wayfinding design, intended to be easily readable by large numbers of festivalgoers moving through public spaces.
The image appears to have been taken in daylight during the late spring or summer months, suggested by the green grass and bright natural light. The sign shows minor wear and surface marks, consistent with temporary outdoor signage used during multi-day public events.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of British festival culture, live music events, community gatherings, urban parks, and temporary public signage. It captures an everyday but recognisable detail of large-scale outdoor events in the UK, where clear pedestrian guidance is essential to managing crowds and movement within shared public spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P8H0WW - A tablet screen shows Viagogo secondary marketplace checkout pages for Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Grand Final tickets at the former M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, with one ticket shown at £4,720 before fees for a live TV show that was one of the most sought-after UK entertainment events of the year. The image is a strong editorial concept for ticket resale, ticket touting, inflated prices, online marketplaces, consumer protection and fan anger over the cost of attending major concerts, festivals, sport and televised arena events. Eurovision 2023 was staged in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine, with the Grand Final held on 13 May 2023, creating huge demand for tickets to the live shows and rehearsals. Official guidance said tickets were sold through Ticketmaster, while published event terms warned that tickets purchased by other means could be invalid. The visible Viagogo page, countdown timer, order details, £4,720 ticket price, booking fee wording and Eurovision branding make the photograph highly searchable for phrases including Eurovision tickets, Viagogo resale, secondary ticketing, ticket scalping, rip-off ticket prices, online checkout, fan exploitation, consumer rights, CMA enforcement, live event fraud risk and unauthorised resale. The image can illustrate news stories, investigations, policy articles, campaign material and opinion pieces about whether high-demand tickets should be capped at face value, how resale platforms present fees, the role of professional touts, bot buying, scarcity, dynamic pricing, unofficial sellers and the risks faced by fans desperate not to miss a one-off event. It also works for stories about digital marketplaces, booking fees, consumer law, entertainment inflation, the live music economy, culture wars over access to popular events, credit card protection, refund disputes, pressure selling, countdown timers, online harms, trust in ticket sites and public concern that ordinary fans are priced out by speculative resale.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak has promised the UK Government will make sure that we're doing everything we can do to tackle ticket touts after Eurovision tickets appeared on re-sale sites for as much as £9,000.
Labour MP Kevin Brennan raised the issue in Prime Minister's Questions today, 8 March. He said a report by BBC Radio 4's You and Yours had exposed queue jumping online touts that had purchased Eurovision tickets and put them on sale for thousands of pounds on dodgy sites like Viagogo.
In this year when we are hosting Eurovision on behalf of war ravaged Ukraine, this latest example of rampant rip-off culture in Tory Britain is particularly despicable. Why isn't his government doing more to support genuine fans over the spivs and ticket touts? asked Brennan.
In response Sunak said, I'm happy to look at the documentary and make sure that we're doing everything we can do, and I'll talk to the Home Secretary about it. But more generally, it is a source of enormous pride for us to host Eurovision. I know it's something that everyone is looking forward to and we should ensure that there is a broad as possible access to seeing that. And we'll do everything we can to make sure that that happens.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is to be staged in Liverpool at the city's 11,000-capacity M&S Bank Arena on 9-13 May.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF745 - The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF77W - The Verve was an English rock band formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester in August 1990 by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong later became a member in their first reunion only.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound with their debut LP A Storm in Heaven, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and four albums. They also endured name and line-up changes, break-ups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK history. It features the hit singles Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Drugs Don't Work, Sonnet and Lucky Man. In 1998, the band won two Brit Awards, winning Best British Group, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in March, and in February 1999, Bitter Sweet Symphony was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. According to Billboard magazine.
On 24 May 1998, The Verve played a homecoming concert in front of 33,000 fans in the grounds of Haigh Hall & Country Park, Aspull, supported by Beck and John Martyn. The band then played gigs in mainland Europe, but, on 7 June, a post-show fight at Düsseldorf-Philipshalle left McCabe with a broken hand and Ashcroft with a sore jaw. After this, McCabe decided he could not tolerate the pressures of life on the road any longer and pulled out of the tour, leaving the band's future in jeopardy, with rumours of a split circulating in the press. The band continued with session musician B. J. Cole replacing McCabe, whose guitar work was also sampled and triggered on stage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7XX - In the autumn of 1943 a small group of nine people met in a small studio near the Parish Church to discuss the formation of a play - reading and discussion group. Wigan Little Theatre came into being as a Friendly Society.
56a Market Street, became the headquarters
On weeknights one could find pieces of sets in construction or the actors in rehearsal, in the knowledge that the set had to be erected on a stage on a Monday night, and the play dress-rehearsed on the Tuesday.
That stage was at St. Michael's Hall in Shaw Street, and it was to be the group's platform for three and a half years. Four hundred Wiganers were now members and the financial success of the productions in following months, together with monies raised by private efforts, enabled the pioneers to plunge.
While the reign at St. Michael's was blooming, the committee had taken an option on the derelict cinema, which is now our theatre, and the sojourn at 56a ended, for all rehearsals and preparation could now be held in the equally spare surroundings of the Alliance. This was in 1946, and it was a condition of the building license for its conversion, that as many jobs as could be done by amateur labour should be. Expert advice duly delegated to eager novices directed the stripping of plaster and pickaxing of underground passageways each evening, while by day the joiners and plasterers spread their masking finishes
The final weeks of preparation were frenzied. By February 1948, productions had raised £850, interest free loans had been encouraged to the tune of £820, members' private efforts had brought in £1,450 and the scheme by which our supporters endowed seats in the theatre at £5 each had produced £500.
In all, when the theatre opened, £3,500 had been raised to cover the deposit on the building and necessary alterations amounting to £2,500. This was followed by a generous interest free loan of £4,000 by Mr. F. T. Hanson, which put the theatre on a solid footing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JD0MEA - The Queensway tunnel is a road tunnel under the River Mersey, in the north west of England, between Liverpool and Birkenhead. Locally, it is often referred to as the Birkenhead tunnel or old tunnel, to distinguish it from the newer Kingsway tunnel (1971), which serves Wallasey and the M53 motorway traffic. At 3.24 kilometres (2.01 mi) in length, it is the longest road tunnel in the UK.
Tolls have been a feature of tunnel use since the Queensway Tunnel opened in 1934. Although residents were originally told tolls would be removed when debts were repaid, this position was dropped long ago. Debts and tolls were increased when the Kingsway Tunnel was built in 1971 to relieve congestion in the first tunnel. The County of Merseyside Act 1980 enshrined in law the right to continue collecting tolls once the debts were repaid. The later 2004 Act created a legal position where tolls charged must rise in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) as published in November.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JD0MEC - The Queensway tunnel is a road tunnel under the River Mersey, in the north west of England, between Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 18 May 1980) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness and alienation.
Curtis suffered from epilepsy and depression and took his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. His death led to the band's dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.
Despite their short career, Joy Division have exerted a wide-reaching influence. John Bush of AllMusic argues that they became the first band in the post-punk movement by ... emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJM1 - Fontaines D.C. are a post-punk rock band from Dublin, Ireland. The band released their debut studio album, Dogrel, on April 12, 2019
Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, Grian Chatten, and Tom Coll met in Dublin while attending music college at British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Liberties, Dublin. They bonded over a common love of poetry and collectively released two collections of poetry, one called Vroom, inspired by the Beat poets (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg) and another called Winding, inspired by Irish poets (Patrick Kavanagh, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats). None of the published poems were translated into songs, but the track Television Screens off their debut Dogrel started out as a poem and was turned into a song.
Lead singer Grian Chatten is half-British (his mother is English and his father is Irish) and was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England but grew up in the County Dublin town of Skerries, Dublin. Coll, Curley, and Deegan are from Ireland Mayo, County Mayo, Emyvale in County Monaghan, and Mayo, County Mayo, respectively, and O'Connell grew up in Madrid, Spain.
The band got their name from a character in the movie The Godfather called Johnny Fontane, a singer and movie star portrayed by Al Martino. Fontane was godson of Vito Corleone. They added the initials D.C. when a band in Los Angeles had the same name. The initials D.C. stand for Dublin City

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A0TWP6 - Penalty notices for parking and motoring offences
Fixed penalty notices were originally introduced for parking and motoring offences, currently continuing in Great Britain under powers provided by the Road Traffic Act 1991 as well as in Northern Ireland
in many areas this style of enforcement has been taken over from police by local authorities. Some other motoring offences (other than parking) can also be dealt with by the issue of FPNs by police, officers of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency or local authority personnel. A fixed penalty notice issued by local authority parking attendants is backed with powers to obtain payment by civil action and is defined as a penalty charge notice (PCN), distinguishing it from other FPNs which are often backed with a power of criminal prosecution if the penalty is not paid
in the latter case the fixed penalty is sometimes designated as a mitigated penalty to indicate the avoidance of being prosecuted which it provides.
If a charge is paid within 14 days of the 28-day period, the charge is decreased by 50%. Appealing against or contesting this notice, requires going through courts and hearings: if lost, the 50% period pay could be extended.
Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) should not be confused with 'Parking Charge Notices, the latter, being issued by private landowners seeking to impose a charge for parking on private land.

Manchester evg News Review - https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/gig-review-fall--manchester-7129956
I've seen Mark E Smith at a range of venues, from sweaty club gigs to confusing 100,000 Gorillaz fans at Glastonbury's main stage, but to see Manchester's most dissident music icon at the city's cathedral felt like it would be a surreal experience.
When the man himself strode past paying customers into the main nave of the grand old building, with the assurance of a man who very much owned the place, it was a double-take moment which seemed fitting of the whole event.
The Fall have been an unusually settled outfit in recent years, now on their fourth consecutive studio album with the same line-up.
For a band which has clocked up almost 70 members one of whom was reportedly fired by its iconic frontman and dictator-in-chief for ordering a salad it's been a period of relative calm which could have brought accusations of sterility.
The rousing opener Your Future, Our Clutter' quickly dispels any fears of the serene venue taking away any of The Fall's traditional sting, if anything the acoustics of the cathedral add another layer to Smith's barking, hectoring vocals.
The follow-up number I'm not from Bury' seems appropriate as the Prestwich rock deity holds his hometown crowd in the palm of his hand, especially the ones craning their necks around the cathedral's dramatic pillars as he prowls around the stage like an overlord searching for something that needs correcting.
In nearing 40 years as The Fall's supreme leader Smith has exhibited a fondness for live-mixing' during sets a tweak of an amp here etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23YW - Antique Ultimate Bell Punch Company Bus Ticket Machine with coloured tickets Made in England.
There were two main problems that faced the early bus and tramway operators with regard to fare collection. One was that of fare dodgers and the other was the possibility of conductors who would fiddle the takings, though it's only a very small minority who would do such things. The solution to these was the Bell Punch ticket system. This was quite ingenious as the system had methods to defeat both, however it was very labour intensive.
The Bell Punch Company produced an automated version of their pre-printed ticket system, which they called Ultimate. These used continuous ticket rolls with the values printed on them. Each ticket carried a serial number and a pre-printed value. The machines had several tracks each of which had a lever at the front that ejected a ticket, which was then torn off against a serrated cutter. The fare stage could be printed in one of three positions on the bottom of the ticket. Each new ticket roll had a piece of adhesive tape (which the conductor had to lick) to join it to the end of the old one, which was supposed to prevent the conductor having to change rolls mid-journey.
The system coped better with changing fare structures, but after a while, the machines became unreliable and would jam up. It was not uncommon to see conductors tearing off tickets from the back of the machines at busy times. Its also not that uncommon at the museum! In the West Midlands, this system was used by West Bromwich, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
