Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9348N - Multiple parcel drop-off and collection lockers stand outside Today's Extra at 239 stock-photo/gotonysmith-Thelwall.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Thelwall New Road, Grappenhall and Thelwall, Warrington, WA4 2XT, showing the rapid growth of automated parcel services in everyday suburban retail settings. The image includes branded locker banks for InPost, Evri, Amazon and other parcel services, lined up beside a local convenience store and community shop. It is a strong editorial image for stories about online shopping, mail order returns, courier networks, last-mile delivery, ecommerce logistics, parcel lockers, contact-free collection and the changing role of local shops as service hubs. The visible InPost slogan Collect it. Return it. Send it. directly reflects the way lockers are now used for returns, deliveries and sending parcels without needing a staffed counter. The green, red, grey and blue locker units add useful visual variety and clearly show how multiple delivery brands can cluster at one neighbourhood location, giving customers choice and extending parcel access beyond traditional post offices. The photograph is commercially useful for articles on Amazon returns, Evri drop-offs, InPost lockers, consumer convenience, 24-hour collection, failed home deliveries, sustainable logistics, reduced delivery miles, high street change and the pressure created by growing online retail. It can also illustrate local planning, parking, pavement space, shop footfall and the increasing use of corner shops as parcel collection points. The Thelwall and Warrington setting gives the image a grounded suburban context rather than a generic distribution-centre view. As a documentary stock image, it captures the practical point where digital shopping, courier networks and ordinary neighbourhood life meet, with automated lockers becoming part of the visible street furniture of modern British retail and delivery infrastructure.

The row metadata places the subject at Thelwall, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 2TB. The spreadsheet date indicates 28 April 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. The value lies in the combination of place, object, wording and context, giving editors something specific and grounded rather than generic filler imagery. Warrington sits between Liverpool and Manchester and is often used as a practical example of a North West town balancing commuter growth, older industrial roots, retail change, new development, road traffic, local services and community identity. The image can support political and civic reporting where the point is not just party branding or protest imagery, but the way public debate appears in streets, media, posters, campaign signs and everyday visual culture. It would suit editorial features, local news reporting, public policy articles, web explainers, travel pieces and business commentary where a real place or recognisable everyday subject is needed rather than a staged studio concept. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNY9 - This image shows a duck crossing sign attached to a wooden fence beside Massey Brook in Cheshire, England. The illustrated sign depicts an adult duck followed by ducklings and includes a conservation message encouraging people not to disturb or chase wildlife.
Such signs are commonly placed near streams, brooks, ponds, and rural paths to raise awareness of local wildlife movements, particularly during the spring and summer breeding season when ducklings are present. The setting, with fencing, grass, and trees, reflects a traditional English countryside environment.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating wildlife protection, countryside access, rural conservation, environmental education, and British nature, as well as conceptual themes around coexistence between people and wildlife.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG46KA - Lymm voters set to be removed from Warrington election map
Voters in Lymm will no longer elect an MP for Warrington should a new scheme be approved.
But revised proposals for new electoral boundaries will mean residents of Thelwall will still be in the Warrington South constituency.
The Boundary Commission is currently reviewing all boundaries across the country.
Its initial suggestion was that Lymm and Thelwall move to the Tatton ward covering Knutsford and other parts of Cheshire.
However following a long consultation period, a final plan has been revealed. It means Lymm will still be moved from Warrington South to Tatton on the electoral map.
Thelwall will stay in Warrington South, where Conservative Andy Carter is currently MP.
With an electorate of 86,422, the number of voters in Warrington South is considerably above the permitted electorate range.
A new month-look consultation will now take place before a final report is sent to Parliament to consider in the summer.
Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: Today's publication is the culmination of months of analysis and we have revised nearly half of our initial proposals based on what people have told us. We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to.
However, we still want people to tell us what they think of this latest map before we submit our final recommendations to Parliament next year. This is our final consultation and I encourage you to participate in the 2023 Boundary Review.
Objections were received about Lymm no longer being included in a Warrington constituency but also 'appreciable support' for the proposals.
Andy Carter provided evidence that 'Thelwall is an integral part of central Warrington, and has limited connections or community ties with Lymm, despite parts being in the same ward'.
He proposed that the Lymm North & Thelwall ward be split in order to retain more electors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTWGKE - All Saints Church is in the village of Thelwall, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by James Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill. The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros. From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHKXYJ - Herons are long-legged, long-necked, freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae, with 64 recognised species, some of which are referred to as egrets or bitterns rather than herons. Members of the genera Botaurus and Ixobrychus are referred to as bitterns, and, together with the zigzag heron, or zigzag bittern, in the monotypic genus Zebrilus, form a monophyletic group within the Ardeidae. Egrets do not form a biologically distinct group from herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white or have decorative plumes in breeding plumage. Herons, by evolutionary adaptation, have long beaks.
The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and no clear consensus exists about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationships of the genera in the family are not completely resolved. However, one species formerly considered to constitute a separate monotypic family, the Cochlearidae or the boat-billed heron, is now regarded as a member of the Ardeidae.
Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises, spoonbills, and cranes, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down. Some members of this group nest colonially in trees

Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFHM - Flags at Half-mast
Half-mast means the flag is flown two-thirds of the way up the flagpole, with at least the height of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the flagpole. Flags cannot be flown at half-mast on poles that are more than 45° from the vertical, but a mourning cravat can be used instead (see below).
When a flag is to be flown at half-mast, it should first be raised all the way to the top of the mast, allowed to remain there for a second and then be lowered to the half-mast position. When it is being lowered from half-mast, it should again be raised to the top of the mast for a second before being fully lowered.
When a British national flag is at half-mast, other flags on the same stand of poles should also be at half-mast or should not be flown at all. Flags of foreign nations should not be flown, unless their country is also observing mourning.
The Royal Standard never flies at half-mast. It represents the Monarchy, which is continuous, and it would therefore be inappropriate for it to fly at half-mast.
Flags should be flown at half-mast on the following occasions:
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of the Sovereign, except on Proclamation Day when flags are flown at full-mast following the proclamation.
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of a member of the Royal Family styled ˜Royal Highness', subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
On the day of the announcement of the death and on the day of the funeral of other members of the Royal Family, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of foreign Rulers, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of Prime Ministers and ex-Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.

Eight, A number is divisible by 8 if its last 3 digits are also divisible by 8.
Eight is the first number to be the aliquot sum of two numbers other than itself
the discrete biprime 10, and the square number 49.
8 is the base of the octal number system, which is mostly used with computers. In octal, one digit represents 3 bits. In modern computers, a byte is a grouping of eight bits, also called an octet.
The number 8 is a Fibonacci number, being 3 plus 5. The next Fibonacci number is 13. 8 is the only positive Fibonacci number, aside from 1, that is a perfect cube.
The number eight is considered to be a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian cultures. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival holiday that lasts eight days and eight nights. In Islam, It is the number of Angels carrying The Holy Throne of Allah in heavens. In Hinduism, it is the number of wealth, abundance. The Goddess Lakshmi has eight forms. There are eight nidhi, or seats of wealth. There are also eight Guardians of the directions.
It is the atomic number of oxygen, as well as the number of tentacles on an octopus.

These are four man-made areas formed by large embankments for the dispersement of dredging waste, although these days are a haven for bird life. A little bit of countryside on the edge of built up Warrington.
In the ferry office is a small baby Belling, and a small bottle gas heater as source of warmth. It can get very cold in the winter, as at the moment. It is cool in summer however.
Inside the ferry man's wooden box are scrawling's in ink from numerous MSCC employees over the years including the story from 1974 of the ferry man who died on the job. A very interesting wooden lid.
The ferry connects an ancient right of way that was disrupted when the ship canal opened. The MSCC had to provide a means of crossing, a small rowing boat. It is part time and currently 12p per person per trip to use it. A full day pass for unlimited trips can be purchased for 25p.
A tired and weather worn wooden sign near the ferry pier mentions the agreement in 1982 between Cheshire County Council and Warrington Borough Council. Hours are stated as 7:00am to 9:00am, 12:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 (although now 18:00).

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Everything's Gone Green' is a single released by Manchester's New Order in December 1981. It was only released in Belgium on the late Factory's Benelux sub-label and bears the catalogue number FBNL 8.
It is supposedly the first song by the group to contain computer-generated sounds. The song had already been released in an edited form, as a B-side on the vinyl single 'Procession' in September of the same year.
Two original songs, 'Cries and Whispers' and 'Mesh' are included as B-sides. The track names of the B-sides are correctly identified on the label, but are in the wrong order on the sleeve. This led to their being misidentified on subsequent releases
for example, the track identified as 'Mesh' on the CD version of the Substance compilation is actually 'Cries and Whispers'. All three tracks appear together on the cassette version of Substance.
All tracks were produced by the late, great tortured genius Martin Hannett (another cut here), this being the last work he did with New Order. This cut made a peak position of 3 in the UK indie charts. For an appreciation of New Order, track down 'Substance'. As usual tell 'em I sent you 8-)

The origins of a church or chapel at All Saints, Thelwall, near Warrington Cheshire, UK are unclear. This consisted of a nave which was designed by J. Mountford Allen.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4107135884 - 'In the year 920 (or was it 923) King Edward the Elder founded a cyty here and called it Thelwall. Written on the Pickering Arms is that inscription.
Still reassuringly serving nice food and ale at the bottom of Bell lane. Or it was today anyway.
Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

All Saints Church, Thelwall, is in the village of Thelwall, Cheshire, England. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
[edit] History
The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by J. Mountford Allen.
[edit] Architecture
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill.[5] The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros.[1] From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9D89J - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Following the construction of the Sankey Brook Navigation, Bridgewater has been argued to be the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution in England, and it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
In September 1761, with his assistant Hugh Oldham, Brindley surveyed an extension from Longford Bridge to Hempstones, near Halton, Cheshire. He assisted in obtaining Parliamentary approval for the Bridgewater Canal Extension Act of 1762 which allowed the construction of an extension to the canal, from Manchester, to the River Mersey at Runcorn. Despite objections from the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, Royal assent was given on 24 March 1762. A junction, Waters Meeting, was created in Trafford Park, at which the new extension branched south through Stretford, Sale, Altrincham, Lymm and finally to Runcorn.
