Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKY6H - Scrabble-style letter tiles spelling Iran and war are arranged on a printed political map of the Middle East, creating a stark editorial concept image about oil price shocks, inflation, energy insecurity and geopolitical risk. The map shows Iran alongside Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region and the Persian Gulf / Strait of Hormuz area, placing the words directly over one of the world's most strategically important energy corridors. The International Energy Agency says around 20 million barrels per day transit the Strait of Hormuz, equal to roughly 25% of world seaborne oil trade, while the US Energy Information Administration also describes it as the world's most important oil chokepoint. That makes the image commercially useful for stories about Iran, regional conflict, military escalation, shipping disruption, sanctions, tanker security, crude oil prices, petrol and diesel costs, energy markets and the knock-on effect on inflation, interest rates, household bills and business costs. The use of Scrabble tiles adds a symbolic layer, suggesting dangerous political wordplay, brinkmanship and the way apparently simple headlines can carry serious consequences for the global economy. It can illustrate news and comment features on Middle East tensions, oil-market volatility, global supply chains, shipping routes, economic uncertainty, consumer prices and the vulnerability of Europe and Asia to Gulf supply disruption. IMF analysis also notes that oil shocks can feed into broader domestic inflation, making the image relevant for economics, finance and cost-of-living coverage as well as foreign affairs. As a stock image, it works as a clean, readable and non-graphic concept visual for editors needing to connect Iran, war risk and oil-driven inflation without using battlefield imagery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRJ - This photograph shows exterior signage on the former Golden Lion Inn, a traditional public house located on Knutsford Road in Warrington, Cheshire. The red brick building, with arched detailing and raised gold lettering, reflects the late Victorian style commonly used for urban and roadside pubs serving growing industrial towns in north west England.
For many years, the Golden Lion Inn formed part of Warrington's local pub network, serving nearby residential streets and acting as a social meeting place for the surrounding community. Like many traditional pubs across the UK, it eventually closed amid changing drinking habits, rising operating costs, and pressure on older licensed premises that were no longer commercially viable.
Following closure, the building was redeveloped into residential flats, reflecting a wider national trend in which former pubs are converted to housing rather than reopened as licensed venues. While the internal use has changed, much of the external character has been retained, with original brickwork and pub signage still visible, allowing the building's former role to remain legible within the streetscape.
Taken in daylight, the image documents both architectural detail and social change. It serves as a visual record of pub closures in Britain and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, illustrating how everyday community landmarks are increasingly absorbed into housing-led redevelopment while retaining traces of their original identity. The Golden Lion on Knutsford Road, Latchford, Warrington (WA4 1AB) has roots that run back well before its late twentieth-century local reputation. Local history writing referenced by MyWarrington describes a Golden Lion Tavern as a recognised roadside marker on the old Knutsford Road route, used as one end of a long-standing agreement connected with tolls and responsibility for maintaining the highway between the Golden Lion and Black Bear Bridge, which strongly suggests it was already established

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJXH - This photograph shows a cluster of tents erected in Lincoln Square in Manchester city centre, used by people experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping. The encampment occupies a prominent civic space surrounded by offices and commercial buildings, with the statue of Abraham Lincoln standing above the scene, creating a striking visual contrast between civic symbolism and contemporary social hardship.
Lincoln Square, located close to Deansgate, is a small but highly visible public space, making it a frequent focal point for demonstrations, memorials, and public gatherings. In this image, brightly coloured tents and tarpaulins fill the square, reflecting the lack of stable accommodation options for some of Manchester's most vulnerable residents.
The scene illustrates wider pressures facing UK cities, including rising housing costs, shortages of affordable accommodation, and the impact of economic uncertainty on low income households. While Manchester has undergone extensive regeneration and commercial development in recent decades, homelessness and rough sleeping remain persistent challenges in the city centre and across Greater Manchester.
Taken in daylight, the photograph documents an unvarnished aspect of urban life, capturing how public spaces are increasingly used as places of last resort. As an editorial image, it provides visual context for reporting and discussion around housing policy, social care provision, inequality, and the human impact of the UK housing and cost of living crisis.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2R - A low-angle view of the City Road Inn, a traditional Manchester public house, photographed against the backdrop of the Hilton Manchester Deansgate, housed within the Beetham Tower, one of the city's most prominent modern skyscrapers. The juxtaposition emphasises the dramatic contrast between older red-brick pub architecture and the sleek glass and steel of twenty-first-century urban development.
The image was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, suggesting fair weather conditions typical of spring or summer in Manchester. Bright natural light enhances the visual separation between the warm tones and textures of the historic pub frontage and the cool, reflective surfaces of the modern tower behind.
This scene encapsulates Manchester's rapid transformation over recent decades, where long-established neighbourhood pubs coexist alongside large-scale regeneration, luxury hotels and high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The photograph is well suited for editorial use illustrating urban change, regeneration, architectural contrast, hospitality heritage, and the evolving identity of post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXFA - This photograph shows a graffiti-covered railway bridge in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre, with active railway tracks running through the foreground and a cluster of modern high-rise buildings forming the skyline in the background. The steel bridge structure is part of the historic rail infrastructure that cuts through Castlefield, an area closely associated with Manchester's industrial and transport heritage.
The graffiti mural spans the length of the bridge and features bold lettering and bright colours typical of contemporary British street art. Set against the muted grey steelwork, the artwork creates a strong visual contrast between informal urban expression and formal Victorian-era engineering. The presence of overhead electrification lines and multiple tracks underlines the continued operational importance of the rail corridor.
Behind the bridge, modern residential and commercial towers rise above the tracks, reflecting Manchester's rapid redevelopment and densification over the past two decades. The juxtaposition of graffiti, heavy rail infrastructure, and glass-and-steel skyscrapers captures a distinctive Manchester cityscape, where industrial legacy, street culture, and modern urban growth exist side by side.
Taken in daylight under broken cloud and blue sky, the image highlights the layered character of central Manchester. Castlefield, now a conservation area, remains a key transition zone between the city's industrial past and its contemporary identity as a growing European city, with this scene illustrating the tension and balance between heritage, infrastructure, creativity, and regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWW5W3 - Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
Trump won the 2016 presidential election as the Republican nominee against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while losing the popular vote. During the campaign, his political positions were described as populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist. His election and policies sparked numerous protests. He was the first U.S. president with no prior military or government service. The 20172019 special counsel investigation established that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to favor his campaign. Trump promoted conspiracy theories and made many false and misleading statements during his campaigns and presidency, to a degree unprecedented in American politics. Many of his comments and actions have been characterized as racially charged or racist and many as misogynistic

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXY - Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett GBE (née Garrett
11 June 1847 5 August 1929) was an English politician, writer and activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage by legal change and in 18971919 led Britain's largest women's rights association, the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS),[1] explaining, I cannot say I became a suffragist. I always was one, from the time I was old enough to think at all about the principles of Representative Government. She tried to broaden women's chances of higher education, as a governor of Bedford College, London (now Royal Holloway) and co-founding Newnham College, Cambridge in 1875. In 2018, a century after the Representation of the People Act, she was the first woman honoured by a statue in Parliament Square in 2018 by Gillian Wearing. Following a campaign and petition by the activist Caroline Criado Perez, the statue's creation was endorsed by both the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The statue, Parliament Square's first monument to a woman and also its first sculpture by a woman, was funded through the government's Centenary Fund, which marks 100 years since some women won the right to vote. The memorial was unveiled on 24 April 2018
Fawcett was born on 11 June 1847 in Aldeburgh, to Newson Garrett (18121893), a businessman from nearby Leiston, and his London wife Louisa (née Dunnell, 18131903). She was the eighth of their ten children

A statue of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, standing pose holding a scroll of plans in his hand. The duke built the crescent area in Buxton but had never been celebrated for his achievement. Two local people commissioned and funded the project which took 20 years to come to fruition, due to the extensive renovations to the Crescent Hotel.
The idea for the statue has been long in the planning, with Sheila previously explaining that it first came about in the late 90s when tourists asked the couple who had built the Crescent and why there was no monument honouring the achievement.
It was commissioned and funded by Bill and Sheila more than 20 years ago but had been put on hold several times as various complications caused set backs to the major scheme to redevelop the Crescent into a five-star spa hotel.
The striking 7.5 ft bronze sculpture - weighing 285kg - shows William Cavendish in his favourite, every-day business clothes - reflecting his reputation as a quiet sort of person'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YJM - A street-level view of Grand Central Hall, located at 35 Renshaw Street, Liverpool, showing its distinctive red brick and terracotta façade with ornate Edwardian architectural detailing. The building features a prominent corner tower, arched main entrance, decorative stonework, and vertical emphasis typical of early twentieth-century nonconformist religious architecture. Pedestrians pass by at street level, providing scale and reinforcing its role within Liverpool's busy city centre streetscape.
Originally constructed as the Methodist Central Hall, the building formed part of a wider movement in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to create large, multifunctional religious and social spaces within Britain's expanding industrial cities. Over time, Grand Central Hall has been repurposed for cultural, leisure, and entertainment uses, reflecting Liverpool's wider pattern of adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
The image captures the building under bright but lightly clouded daylight conditions, emphasising the contrast between red brickwork, pale stone detailing, and the surrounding urban environment. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British architectural heritage, Liverpool landmarks, historic city-centre buildings, and urban regeneration through reuse of former religious structures.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YNG - At the end of the decade, The Sun's coverage of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster, in which 97 people died as a result of their injuries, proved to be, as the paper later admitted, the most terrible blunder in its history.
Three days after the accident, editor Kelvin MacKenzie published an editorial which accused people of scapegoating the police, saying that the disaster occurred because thousands of fans, many without tickets tried to get into the ground just before kick-off either by forcing their way in or by blackmailing the police into opening the gates. The next day, under a front-page headline The Truth, the paper falsely accused Liverpool fans of theft and of urinating on and attacking police officers and emergency services. Conservative Member of Parliament Irvine Patnick was quoted as claiming that a group of Liverpool supporters told a police officer that they would have sex with a dead female victim
Widespread boycotts of the newspaper throughout Merseyside followed immediately and continue to this day. Boycotts include both customers refusing to purchase it, and retailers refusing to stock it. The Financial Times reported in 2019 that Merseyside sales were estimated to drop from 55,000 per day to 12,000 per day, an 80% decrease. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014 that the tabloid's owners had lost £15 million per month since the disaster, in 1989 prices. Sales also declined to a lesser degree in neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. It was revealed in a documentary called Alexei Sayle's Liverpool, aired in September 2008, that many Liverpudlians will not even take the newspaper for free, and those who do may simply burn or tear it up. Local people often refer to the newspaper as The Scum, with campaigners believing it limited their fight for justice

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YTG - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

How much does an Escapade Silverstone house cost?
Escapade Silverstone prices start at £850,000 for a countryside 2 bedroom property and go up to £2.2m for a trackside 4 bedroom property.
Can you live in them?
This is where it gets interesting. The Escapade Silverstone development is designed to be an extension of Silverstone's current hospitality offering and as such they are fully managed by Silverstone circuit themselves, right down to the matching furnishings.
If you purchase one of the properties you can live in it for a pre-determined number of days each year. Go over that number of days and you have to pay a nightly room rate to stay in your own property, albeit at a 35% discount over standard rates.
You can stay for 30 nights multiplied by the number of bedrooms in your property. If you have a 4 bedroom trackside residency, you have 120 bedroom usage nights' per calendar year that you can stay.
During the major events at Silverstone, nightly bedroom usage rates are multiplied by a preset factor. At the F1 the nights are multiplied by 5, and all of the bedrooms in the property are assumed to be used regardless of how full it is.
So if just one couple stays in a 4 bedroom trackside suite for 3 nights at the F1, they would use up 60 (half) of their yearly bedroom usage nights.
an investment with petrolhead perks
Owning one of the Escapade Silverstone properties is like a cross between owning an AirBnB and a Timeshare.
Think of the whole Escapade development as a hotel complex. Now think of the money to purchase one of the properties as an investment in the hotel. As a perk of your investment you get a number of free' night's accommodation in the property with incredible views of the circuit, as well as a number of other bonuses including free access to Silverstone events, free access to the Escapade clubhouse

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0FG - The Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) is a trade union in Northern Ireland affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. It is the largest trade union in Northern Ireland, with around 46,000 members, and is organised into two groups, the Civil Service Group, for the staff of public bodies employed on civil service terms and conditions, and the Public Officers Group, for employees of education and library boards, health and social services boards, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, district councils, other public bodies and voluntary organisations.
Its current General Secretary is Carmel Gates, and President Brian Smyth.
In the wake of the First World War and Partition of Ireland, the Northern Ireland Civil Service was organised out of the remnants of the Dublin Castle administration. The Unionist Government set up six Ministries (Finance, Home Affairs, Education, Agriculture, Commerce and Labour) and a Prime Minister's Office. It essentially mirrored the set-up in Great Britain, with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance becoming the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
The earliest incarnation of what was to become NIPSA was the Belfast and District Public Officers' Association (BDPOA), but it was short-lived, down to its own success, when it opened a Derry branch and became the Ulster Public Officers' Association. Its first General Secretary was John Walters
The NICSA, AECS and Civil Service Association merged in 1971 to become NIPSA, with Brendan Harkin as its first General Secretary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXAF - A historic iron cannon mounted on the city walls of Derry / Londonderry, positioned between stone ramparts and overlooking the Bogside area of the city below. The cannon forms part of the extensive seventeenth-century defensive fortifications that encircle the historic city centre, which remain among the best-preserved walled cities in Europe.
The city walls were completed in the early 1600s and are closely associated with key events in Irish and British history, most notably the Siege of Derry (1689) during the Williamite Wars. Cannons such as this were installed as part of the city's defensive system, intended to protect the settlement and assert control over the surrounding landscape.
Today, the walls are a major heritage and tourism feature, offering panoramic views across different parts of the city, including areas that later became symbolically significant during The Troubles. The image captures the cannon in daylight under overcast conditions, with modern housing visible in the distance, illustrating the layered and complex history of Derry / Londonderry, where historic military architecture coexists with contemporary urban life.
The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial uses relating to Northern Irish history, urban heritage, conflict studies, peace and reconciliation contexts, and cultural tourism.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC95TN - Tea One The Baum / Yorkshire Street
Combining elements of classical painting with inspirations from the world of graffiti Tea One is influenced by the post industrial landscape of Northern Britain. Particularly he draws from those remnants left over from the areas once abundant past. Painting on the alley known as the Baum he has weaved seven stories together from seven different women. Calling the piece the Seven Sisters' he is of course also referencing the famous apartment blocks through placing real life stories into that context.
His stories are those which many of us would have experienced. Each of the women in the mural have their own tale to tell but they are tales that all of us could associate with. From left to right the first woman holds something up to a light. It's unknown what it is but it could be an opportunity or it could be a burden. She doesn't know it yet but her life might be about to change either way. Next to her a woman sits in a boat rowing with her back to her destination. She isn't sure what lies ahead yet she still travels into the unknown, she is on her own personal odyssey.
The third woman is wearing a mask. She is struggling with her own identity. Perhaps living a charade or just not sure what journey she is on or whether it is indeed the right one. The silhouetted figure next to her represents travel. Either leaving or arriving she could be about to go on a journey or may be coming home after a voyage. The fifth woman represents rebirth, pregnant she is about to bring new life into the world. Next to her meanwhile a tear falls down the face of the sixth woman. She is experiencing her own private tragedy. Though we don't know what it is we will have all had similar emotions from time to time.
The mural from Teaone' is called the Seven Sisters
The final woman as part of this mural is deeply personal to the artist. Showing a woman undergoing treatment for breast cancer. He calls this overcoming the monster

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PC - This image shows a vintage advertising poster produced by the Cooperative Wholesale Society to promote Penguin umbrellas, a specialist product sold through cooperative retail outlets across Britain. The poster features a humorous illustrated scene of people sheltering beneath umbrellas, accompanied by the slogan It never rains in Manchester but you'll see penguins, playing on the city's reputation for wet weather and dry northern wit.
The Cooperative Wholesale Society, commonly known as CWS, was the manufacturing and wholesale arm of the British cooperative movement, supplying goods to local Co-op stores nationwide. Advertising material such as this poster combined practical product promotion with humour and strong graphic identity, helping distinguish cooperative goods from private retailers during the mid twentieth century.
The illustration style, limited colour palette, and bold typography are characteristic of postwar British commercial art, reflecting a period when posters were a primary means of mass communication. The use of penguins as a visual motif reinforced brand recognition for Penguin umbrellas while appealing to family audiences and everyday consumers.
Closely associated with Manchester and the wider Lancashire cooperative tradition, this poster also reflects the cultural values of the movement, including accessibility, shared ownership, and trust in everyday essentials. The image is well suited for editorial use covering British social history, cooperative retailing, vintage advertising, graphic design, and the cultural identity of northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PG - This photograph shows the frontage of the Original Co-operative Store on Toad Lane in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, widely recognised as the birthplace of the modern Co-operative movement. It was here, in 1844, that the Rochdale Pioneers opened a small shop selling basic goods under principles that would go on to influence cooperative retailing across Britain and around the world.
The modest red brick building, with its distinctive green door and bay windows, reflects the practical and unpretentious origins of the movement. The Rochdale Pioneers were working men seeking fair prices, honest weights, and ethical trading at a time when food adulteration and exploitative retail practices were common. Their principles, including democratic member control and the distribution of surplus to members, became the foundation of the global cooperative model.
Today the building is preserved as a heritage site and museum, forming a key part of Rochdale's identity and its contribution to social reform, retail history, and working-class self-organisation. The surrounding streetscape of Toad Lane reinforces the historical setting, offering a tangible link to nineteenth-century industrial Lancashire.
Photographed in clear daylight, this image documents an internationally significant site in the history of retail, mutualism, and social enterprise. It is well suited for editorial use covering British social history, cooperative economics, heritage preservation, and the development of ethical retailing traditions.

Croydon Tramlink
Docklands Light Railway
London Cable Car
Glasgow Subway
London Underground
Tyne and Wear Metro (between Fellgate and South Hylton)
West Midlands Metro
This amounts to around 10,000 miles (16,000 km) of track and more than 3,000 railway stations and depots. There are more than one billion passenger journeys annually on the main lines alone.
In addition, BTP, in conjunction with the French National Police (under the Border Police unit) Police aux Frontières police the international services operated by Eurostar.
BTP is not responsible for policing the majority of the Tyne and Wear Metro (which is instead policed by Northumbria Police's Metro Unit) or the entirety of the Manchester Metrolink (policed by Greater Manchester Police). BTP also does not police heritage railways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R6AHW5 - The Walker Art Gallery is an art gallery in Liverpool, which houses one of the largest art collections in England outside London. It is part of the National Museums Liverpool group.
History of the Gallery
The Walker Art Gallery's collection dates from 1819 when the Liverpool Royal Institution acquired 37 paintings from the collection of William Roscoe, who had to sell his collection following the failure of his banking business, though it was saved from being broken up by his friends and associates.
In 1843, the Royal Institution's collection was displayed in a purpose-built gallery next to the Institution's main premises. In 1850 negotiations by an association of citizens to take over the Institution's collection, for display in a proposed art gallery, library and museum, came to nothing.
The collection grew over the following decades: in 1851 Liverpool Town Council bought Liverpool Academy's diploma collection and further works were acquired from the Liverpool Society for the Fine Arts, founded in 1858. The competition between the academy and society eventually led to both collapsing.
William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860, named after a Liverpool merchant whose generosity enabled the Town Council to act upon an 1852 Act of Parliament which allowed the establishment of a public library, museum and art gallery, and in 1871 the council organised the first Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, held at the new library and museum.
The gallery is housed in a neo-Classical building located on William Brown Street (the only street in the United Kingdom to consist of nothing other than museums, galleries and libraries).
The Walker's collection includes Italian and Netherlandish paintings from 1300 to 1550, European art from 1550 to 1900, including works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, 18th and 19th-century British art, including a major collection of Victorian painting and many Pre-Raphaelite works, a wide collection of prints & drawings

The formal composition, strong contrast and angled perspective make the sign highly readable and useful as an editorial stock photograph for stories about resident doctors, junior doctors, consultants, SAS doctors, NHS staffing pressures, workforce shortages, public sector employment disputes, union ballots, medical professionalism, workplace rights and healthcare politics in Britain. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A429 - Douglas Noël Adams (11 March 1952 11 May 2001) was an English author, humorist, and screenwriter, best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Originally a 1978 BBC radio comedy, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy developed into a trilogy of five books that sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime. It was further developed into a television series, several stage plays, comics, a video game, and a 2005 feature film. Adams's contribution to UK radio is commemorated in The Radio Academy's Hall of Fame.
Adams also wrote Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul (1988), and co-wrote The Meaning of Liff (1983), The Deeper Meaning of Liff (1990), and Last Chance to See (1990). He wrote two stories for the television series Doctor Who, co-wrote City of Death (1979), and served as script editor for its seventeenth season. He co-wrote the sketch Patient Abuse for the final episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus. A posthumous collection of his selected works, including the first publication of his final (unfinished) novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002.
Adams was a self-proclaimed radical atheist, an advocate for environmentalism and conservation, and a lover of fast cars, technological innovation and the Apple Macintosh
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a concept for a science-fiction comedy radio series pitched by Adams and radio producer Simon Brett to BBC Radio 4 in 1977. Adams came up with an outline for a pilot episode, as well as a few other stories (reprinted in Neil Gaiman's book Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion) that could be used in the series.
According to Adams, the idea for the title occurred to him while he lay drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria, gazing at the stars. He was carrying a copy of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe, and it occurred to him that somebody ought to write a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A45C - The Tomb of Karl Marx stands in the Eastern cemetery of Highgate Cemetery, North London, England. It commemorates the burial sites of Marx, of his wife, Jenny von Westphalen, and other members of his family. Originally buried in a different part of the Eastern cemetery, the bodies were disinterred and reburied at their present location in 1954. The tomb was designed by Laurence Bradshaw and was unveiled in 1956, in a ceremony led by Harry Pollitt, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain, which funded the memorial.
The tomb consists of a large bust of Marx in bronze set on a marble pedestal. The pedestal is inscribed with quotes from Marx's works including, on the front, the final words of The Communist Manifesto, Workers of all lands unite. Since its construction, the tomb has become a place of pilgrimage for followers of Marxist theory. It has also been a target for Marx's opponents, suffering vandalism, and two bomb attacks in the 1970s. It is a Grade I listed structure, the highest listing reserved for buildings and structures of exceptional interest.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A45T - Paul Mackintosh Foot (8 November 1937 18 July 2004) was a British investigative journalist, political campaigner, author, and long-time member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP).
In 1964, in London he began to work for The Sun, as the trade union newspaper, the Daily Herald, had become, in a department called Probe. The intention was to investigate and publish stories behind the news but the Probe team resigned after six months.
Foot left to work, part-time, on the Mandrake column on The Sunday Telegraph. He had contributed articles to Private Eye since 1964 but decided, in February 1967, to take a cut in salary and join the staff of the magazine on a full-time basis, working with its editor, Richard Ingrams and Peter Cook
Foot's first stint at Private Eye lasted until 1972 when, according to Patrick Marnham, Foot was sacked by Ingrams who had come to the conclusion that Foot's copy was being unduly influenced by his contacts in the International Socialists. Ingrams has denied this, writing, It was said at the time that he and I had fallen out over political issues
Six years later he returned to Private Eye but was poached in 1979 by the editor of the Daily Mirror, Mike Molloy, who offered him a weekly investigative page of his own with one condition, that he was not to make propaganda for the SWP. In 1980, Foot began to look into the case of the Bridgewater Four, who had been convicted the previous year of killing Stourbridge newspaper boy Carl Bridgewater. He repeatedly returned to this case, to the occasional consternation of his editor but believed this practice would lead to new witnesses coming forward. Foot and his colleagues looked through many thousands of pages of evidence and statements
Paul Foot died of a heart attack at the age of 66. A tribute issue of the Socialist Review, on whose editorial board Foot sat for 19 years, collected together many of his articles, while issue 1116 of Private Eye included a tribute to Foot

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJ62 - Daylight saving time (DST), also referred to as daylight savings time, daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia), or summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in either the late winter or spring (spring forward), and to set clocks back by one hour in the fall (fall back) to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in early spring and one 25-hour day in the middle of autumn.
The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by U.S. polymath Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage
and calculated considerable savings
After synchronously resetting all clocks in a region to one hour ahead of standard time, individuals following a clock-based schedule will awaken an hour earlier than they would have otherwiseor rather an hour's worth of darkness earlier
they will begin and complete daily work routines an hour of daylight earlier: they will have available to them an extra hour of daylight after their workday activities. They will have one less hour of daylight at the start of the workday, making the policy less practical during winter.
Proponents of daylight saving time argue that most people prefer a greater increase in daylight hours after the typical nine to five workday. Supporters have also argued that DST decreases energy consumption by reducing the need for lighting and heating, but the actual effect on overall energy use is heavily disputed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHGEEW - Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for two of her published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960) and Ariel (1965), as well as The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her suicide in 1963. The Collected Poems was published in 1981, which included previously unpublished works. For this collection Plath was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1982, making her the fourth to receive this honour posthumously.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts and the University of Cambridge, England, where she was a student at Newnham College. She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956, and they lived together in the United States and then in England. Their relationship was tumultuous and, in her letters, Plath alleges abuse at his hands. They had two children before separating in 1962.
Plath was clinically depressed for most of her adult life, and was treated multiple times with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). She killed herself in 1963, 11/02/1963

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGRW6T - The Tudor building on Church Street, Warrington is one of the town's oldest and most famous landmarks.
Here, we take a look at its centuries of fascinating history.
The grade two-listed building now houses an Indian restaurant aptly named the Cottage which opened following a lengthy, National Trust approved renovation of the premises in the early noughties.
Whilst frequently referred to as Cromwell's Cottage, Oliver Cromwell is only thought to have stayed the night at the now demolished General Wolf close by on August 20, 1648.
However, the cottage is where he sent dispatches proclaiming victories over Scottish Royalists during battles at Preston, Winwick and Warrington itself.
Today, a plaque commemorates that fact with Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Winwick Pass leading to the surrender of Scots forces on August 25.
The defeat of Royalist armies in the north of England ultimately hastened the end of the second English Civil War, and led to the execution of Charles I in January 1649.
It is believed that the cottage dates back to roughly the 16th century, according to a 2007 Warrington Borough Council report which states that the building was constructed in a late medieval style' after the road's original middle-age structures were destroyed.
Similar characteristics can be attributed to the other Tudor cottages on Church Street, with the nearby Bull's Head and Marquis of Granby pubs remaining as the street's oldest surviving buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGT90G - J Sainsbury plc, trading as Sainsbury's, is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 14.6% share of UK supermarket sales in September 2022.
Founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company was the largest UK retailer of groceries for most of the 20th century. In 1995, Tesco became the market leader when it overtook Sainsbury's, which has since been ranked second or third: it was overtaken by Asda from 2003 to 2014, and again in 2019. In 2018, a planned merger with Asda was blocked by the Competition and Markets Authority over concerns of increased prices for consumers.
The holding company, J Sainsbury plc, is split into three divisions: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (including convenience shops), Sainsbury's Bank, and Argos. As of 2021, the largest overall shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority, which holds 14.99% of the company. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In 2012, Jel Singh Nagra, a shop keeper from North Tyneside, was threatened with legal action from Sainsbury's after he named his shop Singhsbury's. It complained about his logo design and the name. Nagra changed the shop name to Morrisinghs. Morrisons wished him well.
A Singhbury's Local in Aylesbury removed its sign after intervention from Sainsbury's in 2017
Ownership in February 2023 was as follows:
Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) shareholding stood at 14.3% shares.
Vesa Equity Investment, the vehicle of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky shareholding stood at 10% shares.
Costcutter owner Bestway shareholding stood at 4.47% shares

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PCB3RX - The Warrington bombings were two separate bomb attacks that happened during early 1993 in Warrington, England. The first attack happened on 26 February, when a bomb exploded at a gas storage facility. It caused extensive damage but no injuries. While fleeing the scene, the bombers shot and injured a police officer and two of them were then caught after a high-speed car chase. The second attack happened on 20 March, when two small bombs exploded in litter bins outside shops and businesses on Bridge Street. Two children were killed and dozens of people were injured. Although a warning or warnings had been sent, the area was not evacuated in time.
The attacks were carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and it has been claimed that members of Red Action were also involved
Shortly before midday on 20 March 1993, The Samaritans in Liverpool received a bomb warning by telephone. According to police, the caller said only that a bomb had been planted outside a Boots shop. Merseyside Police sent officers to branches of Boots in Liverpool and warned the Cheshire Constabulary, who patrolled nearby Warrington. About 30 minutes later, at about 12:25, two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington, about 100 yards (91 m) apart. The blasts happened within a minute of each other. One exploded outside Boots and McDonald's, and one outside the Argos catalogue store. The area was crowded with shoppers. Witnesses said that the first explosion drove panicking shoppers into the path of the next blast just seconds later. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast-iron litter bins, causing large amounts of shrapnel. Buses were organized to ferry people away from the scene and 20 paramedics and crews from 17 ambulances were sent to deal with the aftermath

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX10K - Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids (HEM-uh-roids), also called piles, are swollen veins in your anus and lower rectum, similar to varicose veins. Hemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids).
Nearly three out of four adults will have hemorrhoids from time to time. Hemorrhoids have a number of causes, but often the cause is unknown.
Fortunately, effective options are available to treat hemorrhoids. Many people get relief with home treatments and lifestyle changes.
Your doctor might be able to see external hemorrhoids. Diagnosing internal hemorrhoids might include examination of your anal canal and rectum.
Digital examination. Your doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum. He or she feels for anything unusual, such as growths.
Visual inspection. Because internal hemorrhoids are often too soft to be felt during a rectal exam, your doctor might examine the lower portion of your colon and rectum with an anoscope, proctoscope or sigmoidoscope.
Your doctor might want to examine your entire colon using colonoscopy if:
Your signs and symptoms suggest you might have another digestive system disease
You have risk factors for colorectal cancer
You are middle-aged and haven't had a recent colonoscopy

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWG3H - The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, based on the 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White, the film is about a beautiful English tourist travelling by train in continental Europe who discovers that her elderly travelling companion seems to have disappeared from the train. After her fellow passengers deny ever having seen the elderly lady, the young woman is helped by a young musicologist, the two proceeding to search the train for clues to the old lady's disappearance.
The Lady Vanishes was filmed at the Gainsborough Studios in Islington, London. Hitchcock caught Hollywood's attention with the film and moved to Hollywood soon after its release. Although the director's three previous efforts had done poorly at the box office, The Lady Vanishes was widely successful, and confirmed American producer David O. Selznick's belief that Hitchcock indeed had a future in Hollywood cinema.
The British Film Institute ranked The Lady Vanishes the 35th best British film of the 20th century. In 2017, a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine saw it ranked the 31st best British film ever. It is one of Hitchcock's most renowned British films, and the first of three screen versions of White's novel to date

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7BJ - The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF859 - Gerrard Winstanley (19 October 1609 10 September 1676) was an English Protestant religious reformer, political philosopher, and activist during the period of the Commonwealth of England. Winstanley was the leader and one of the founders of the English group known as the True Levellers or Diggers. The group occupied formerly common land that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops. True Levellers was the name they used to describe themselves, whereas the term Diggers was coined by contemporaries.
Early life
Gerrard Winstanley was born on 19 October 1609, the son of Edward Winstanley, mercer, and was baptised in the parish of Wigan, then part of the West Derby hundred of Lancashire. His mother's identity remains unknown and he could have been born anywhere in the parish of Wigan. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
In 1630, Winstanley migrated to the City of London, where he became an apprentice to a Merchant Tailor. In 1638, he was admitted as a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company, a trade guild. In 1639, he married Susan King, the daughter of William King, a London surgeon.
English Civil Wars
The First English Civil War disrupted Winstanley's business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. His father-in-law helped him to move to Cobham, Surrey, where he initially worked as a cowherd
Winstanley published a pamphlet called The New Law of Righteousness. The basis of this work came from the Book of Acts, chapter two, verses 44 and 45: And all that believed were together, and had all things common
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 and held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store. The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event.
Originally pitched as an idea to create an event similar to Free Comic Book Day by Bull Moose Music's Chris Brown and Criminal Record's Eric Levin, the concept for Record Store Day was created during a brainstorming session at a meeting of independent record store owners in Baltimore, Maryland
Record Store Day 2022 announced Taylor Swift as its first-ever global ambassador, for its 15th anniversary celebrations, and took place on April 23, 2022. An RSD Drops date also took place on June 18, 2022 to release items that were either delayed in production or could not be made in time for Record Store Day in April.
Record Store Day 2018 took place on Saturday, April 21, 2018. To celebrate, The Alarm visited stores in London, New York, and Los Angeles throughout the day. Special releases included albums by Prince, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bruce Springsteen, among others. The BBC released two full-cast television soundtracks of the Doctor Who serials The Tomb of the Cybermen and City of Death with newly commissioned gatefold artwork. The ambassadors for the event were Run The Jewels.

Opened in 1911, the building was the purpose-built home of the Royal Liver Assurance group, which had been set up in the city in 1850 to provide locals with assistance related to losing a wage-earning relative. One of the first buildings in the world to be built using reinforced concrete, the Royal Liver Building stands at 98.2 m (322 ft) tall to the top of the spires, 103.7 metres (340feet) to the top of the birds and 50.9 m (167 ft) to the main roof.
The Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool with its two fabled Liver Birds which watch over the city and the sea. Legend has it that if these two birds were to fly away, the city would cease to exist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JHR5 - Baby Ethan Mural
A huge baby swimming underwater in Liverpool city centre. This mural by street artist, Paul Curtis, is potentially the largest street art painting in the centre of Liverpool. Located on the side of The Abbey Road bar on Harrington Street in Liverpool, the mural was painted in May 2021 and took 8 days to complete. It measures 18 metres high and 10 metres wide. The piece was commissioned by Derwent Estates Ltd. The baby is said to represent the re-birth of Liverpool and the new hopes and potential of the future following the Coronavirus lockdowns. The underwater element was to try to create an illusion that the building is a pool tank. It also allowed the use of a rich blue colour to help add bright colour to the piece. The name Ethan is chosen by the artist. At the time of painting, his sister was expecting a baby boy, named Ethan.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDPYBA - A printed circuit board (PCB
also printed wiring board or PWB) is a medium used in electrical and electronic engineering to connect electronic components to one another in a controlled manner. It takes the form of a laminated sandwich structure of conductive and insulating layers: each of the conductive layers is designed with an artwork pattern of traces, planes and other features (similar to wires on a flat surface) etched from one or more sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or between sheet layers of a non-conductive substrate. Electrical components may be fixed to conductive pads on the outer layers in the shape designed to accept the component's terminals, generally by means of soldering, to both electrically connect and mechanically fasten them to it. Another manufacturing process adds vias: plated-through holes that allow interconnections between layers
The Austrian engineer Paul Eisler invented the printed circuit as part of a radio set while working in the UK around 1936. In 1941 a multi-layer printed circuit was used in German magnetic influence naval mines
Around 1943 the USA began to use the technology on a large scale to make proximity fuzes for use in World War II. Such fuzes required an electronic circuit that could withstand being fired from a gun, and could be produced in quantity
Motorola was an early leader in bringing the process into consumer electronics, announcing in August 1952 the adoption of plated circuits in home radios after six years of research and a $1M investment
Originally, every electronic component had wire leads, and a PCB had holes drilled for each wire of each component. The component leads were then inserted through the holes and soldered to the copper PCB traces. This method of assembly is called through-hole construction. In 1949, Moe Abramson and Stanislaus F. Danko of the United States Army Signal Corps developed the Auto-Sembly process in which component leads were inserted into a copper foil interconnection

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K8C9NH - The Peel Group is a British infrastructure and property investment business, based in Manchester. In 2022, its Peel Land and Property estate extends to 13 million square feet (1.2 km2) of buildings, and over 33,000 acres (13,000 ha) of land and water. Peel retains minority stakes in its former ports business and MediaCityUK.
The Trafford Centre, which opened in 1998, is widely regarded as Peel's landmark development. It was sold in 2011 to Capital Shopping Centres for £1.6 billion, making it then the most expensive acquisition in British property history. £700 million of the consideration was in shares and Peel continued to buy shares in the purchaser that went into administration, eliminating share value, in 2020.
The Peel Group held a series of other substantial investments in listed businesses including Land Securities Group plc and Pinewood Shepperton plc, and in 2022 owns 14.1% of Harworth Group plc
The Peel Group was known from 1973 to 1981 as Peel Mills (Holdings) Ltd
from 1981 to 2004 as Peel Holdings plc, and then the wider organisation took its present form.
Inspired by the Peel Tower near his native Bury, Whittaker retained the name Peel Mills Ltd for his property and cotton business.
After a period on the Manchester Stock Exchange, Peel Holdings listed on the London Stock Exchange Official List in 1983. It transferred to the Alternative Investment Market in January 2000 before the Whittaker family and Olayan Group majority shareholders bought out Peel Holdings' 6.63% minority shareholders in 2004, taking the business private.
From 1971, Whittaker acquired shares in the Manchester Ship Canal Company that unlike most other British canals had not been nationalised post-World War II.
Peel sold its cotton business for £22 million to finance the purchase of more canal shares, and in 1987 acquired control. It bought out the remaining minority shareholders in 1993

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBKW - The White Rose of York (Latinised as rosa alba, blazoned as a rose argent) is a white heraldic rose which was adopted in the 14th century as a heraldic badge of the royal House of York. In modern times it is used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the white rose has religious connotations as (like the white lily) it represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, one of whose many titles in the Roman Catholic faith is the Mystical Rose of Heaven. In Christian liturgical iconography white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence, purity, joy and glory.
The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (13411402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. One of his elder brothers, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (13401399) adopted a red rose as a heraldic badge, the red rose of Lancaster. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688
In heraldry The Rose of York is blazoned as A rose argent barbed and seeded proper (a white rose with sepals and seeds in their natural colours). According to the College of Heralds, the heraldic rose may be used with either a petal at the top or if slightly rotated with a sepal at the top. Traditionally the rose is displayed with a petal at the top in the North Riding and West Riding but with a sepal at the top in the East Riding of Yorkshire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBMT - North Yorkshire Police is the territorial police force covering the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire and the unitary authority of York in northern England. As of September 2018 the force had a strength of 1,357 police officers, 127 special constables, 192 PCSOs and 1,072 police staff. Of the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales, the force has the 5th largest geographic area of responsibility whilst being the 15th smallest force in terms of police officer numbers
The force was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, and was largely a successor to the York and North East Yorkshire Police, also taking part of the old West Riding Constabulary's area. The York and North East Yorkshire Police had covered the North Riding of Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and the county borough of York
it was itself formed in 1968 from a merger of the two riding forces with the York City Police
In July 2017, the force's headquarters was moved from Newby Wiske to Alverton Court in Northallerton. The new headquarters is the former offices of the Rural Payments Agency
Since November 2012, the force has been overseen by the elected North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Since 2018, this role has also included oversight of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In October 2021, the incumbent commissioner Philip Allott resigned following comments surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4P - This image shows The Kings Arms, a well-known traditional public house located beside the River Ouse in the historic centre of York. The pub is a familiar landmark on King's Staith and is popular with both residents and visitors, particularly during warm summer weather when outdoor seating is in use.
The Kings Arms occupies a characterful historic building and is closely associated with riverside life in York. Its proximity to the river means it is also known for periodic flooding, an issue that has become part of its local identity and media profile over the years.
In this scene, people are gathered outside the pub enjoying drinks and conversation under clear blue skies, reflecting the social role of English pubs as informal community meeting places. The visible pub sign reinforces its identity as a long-established and recognisable venue within the city.
With York's historic riverside architecture and pedestrian activity in the background, the image captures everyday leisure and tourism in one of England's most visited historic cities. It is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, urban leisure, tourism, riverside life, and summer social scenes in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJG - Wilderspool Roman Town
Iron-work, Minor Settlement, Pottery and Temple Or Shrine
Wilderspool Settlement was a Roman Small Town with industrial functions with extensive bronze, iron and glass working industries, 1st-2nd century
later 3rd/4th century occupation The site was defended by a ditch and wall
no visible remains. The initial Roman settlement at Warrington was probably a mansio or wayside station towards the end of the 1st century AD
The settlement occupied a tongue-like strip of land, on hich ground, 41 feet above O.D., overlooking the plain and above flood-level. It was defended by the river Mersey on the north and by the Cress and Lum brooks on the west and east. It occupied an important strategic position at the head of the tidal portion of the Mersey at the place
where it can be first forded.
The Roman settlement was clearly a walled town with no evidence of a military camp. It probably became established as a mansio, at the ford, then a customs-town and port and finally developed into an industrial town. It was on the Brigantian frontier.
Wilderspool Wall Defences
The excavations revealed that the Roman town was defended by a wall with an outer ditch, forming an irregularly four-sided figure and enclosing an area of c.3 acres. Only the western side of these defences was fully excavated but the ditch was traced sufficiently to indicate the general plan. The wall was built of local sandstone facing to a core of rubble and clay and was 9-12 feet thick. Large buttress-like bases were found on the west and east sides and identified as ballistaria. There were traces of an angle tower on the rounded NW angle of the defences and, at this angle, a well-made causeway was found with vague indications of a gate. At the south-west angle of the wall, the main Roman road from the south entered the town and the traces of the pillars of a gateway were found. - More at https://www.roman-britain.co.uk/places/wilderspool/

Plans for permanent traveller sites in Cheltenham - but will they help stop illegal camps?
The problem is wherever the council puts the sites, the travellers don't want to stop on them
Concerns are mounting that plans for traveller sites will not be enough to stop illegal camps in Cheltenham.
Travellers have pitched up without permission on several patches of land in the spa town over recent weeks.
Cheltenham Borough Council leader, Councillor Steve Jordan, believes this annoying issue will be tackled by the Joint Core Strategy (JCS).
The document includes plans for three traveller and gypsy sites in Cheltenham, two in Gloucester and 78 in the borough of Tewkesbury by 2031.
Recent problems
There have been camps this month in the car parks at the Leisure At Cheltenham centre, Cheltenham Racecourse and North Place.
And travellers moved 15 vehicles onto the borough council-owned Elmfield Park on Monday.
They ignored an eviction order served on Tuesday, but Cheltenham Magistrates' Court today made a new order that they leave.
Plans for more sites
The three sites planned for Cheltenham, all permanent, will be in Castle Dream Stud, in Mill Lane, Charlton Kings, where one traveller family has lived since 2011.
They have permission to stay there until 2022, but this is set to be made permanent.

On the south wall between two windows is a three quarter length tiled figure of St Thomas, the patron saint of our church. Known sometimes as Doubting Thomas', the fact that most people know about him is that he asked to see proof of Jesus' death and resurrection. He was later a missionary, spreading the Christian message to many parts of the world including India. He is regarded by Indian Christians as the patron saint of India and is also the patron saint of architects, builders and stonemasons. Thomas was martyred at Myalapore, Chennai the spear in his hand in the picture is a symbol of his martyrdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M6C - Mossdale was built in 1876 by the Shropshire Union Railway & Canal Company, Chester. She is a Mersey Flat and was towed by horses or tugs. Her hull was carvel construction of oak, elm and pitch pine and she traded between Ellesmere Port and Liverpool. Originally known as RUBY, she was renamed MOSSDALE when bought by Abel & Son of Runcorn in the 1930s. They extensively rebuilt and deepened her to obtain maximum load for minimum displacement. She was found abandoned at Ellesmere Port in 1970 and is now preserved on shore at the Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port.
Mossdale's fabric is representative of a typical wooden Mersey flat, being built of oak frames on pitch pine planking doubled where necessary to achieve her shape. Her large foredeck windlass fitted her to work in the tidal Mersey, with a smaller windlass used when warping her into docks. In 1933, Mossdale underwent a major re-build which included lengthening her to 72 feet. Her increased length represents an important period in her working life, marking the development in trade caused by the industrial revolution and the need for her to carry a greater cargo to pay her way. With no means of propulsion, she would generally have been towed by a horse or tug.
Mossdale was never rigged as a sailing flat, but is a good example of a regional river barge from North-West England. She has a substantial rudder, a typical flat bottom, a round bilge and bluff square bows.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K244C1 - Vintage Post Office Savings Bank advertising poster displayed inside a public telephone box kiosk, urging people to Take them to the Post Office Savings Bank and Support the New Savers Campaign. The image shows an aged, weathered public information advert behind glass, with a child's face, a blue money bag marked Savings, halftone printing, fading colours and the worn red metal frame of the kiosk interior. It is a strong documentary image for themes of thrift, personal saving, family finance, children's savings, public service advertising, postal history, telephone box interiors and mid twentieth-century British graphic design. The Post Office Savings Bank was founded in 1861 as a state-backed savings scheme intended to encourage ordinary people to save, and NS&I records this as the beginning of its own history. Later changes separated National Savings from the Post Office, but the poster reflects the earlier period when savings services were heavily associated with Post Office branches and everyday civic infrastructure. The image may be useful for editorial features on household budgeting, post-war savings culture, state-backed savings, children's money habits, public finance, social history, old advertising, GPO heritage, phone boxes, postal services, government campaigns and changing attitudes to thrift. The telephone kiosk setting adds nostalgic value, linking two once-familiar parts of British public life: the red phone box and the local Post Office as a place for saving, communication and public administration. The faded surface and damaged poster give the photograph an archive-like feel, suggesting a surviving remnant of a campaign that promoted prudence, security and responsible saving to families. It can also support stories about the decline of cash-based saving habits, the move from branch services to digital finance, and the way public spaces once carried official messages about money, citizenship and self-reliance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2RY1 - Mr. Whippy (or Mister Whippy) is a brand of soft-mix ice cream produced by Wall's, a subsidiary of Unilever as part of the Heartbrand. Mr. Whippy began as a franchise of ice cream operators, but is now just the name of the soft-mix ice cream, as such, many ice cream vendors selling the soft-mix brand themselves as Mr. Whippy and stylise their vehicles and outlets as they wish. Actual franchises of the brand continue separately in Australia and New Zealand.
The name Mr. Whippy has become a generic trademark in the United Kingdom amongst consumers to refer to soft-serve ice cream in a single cone
The company originated when British businessman Dominic Facchino visited the United States and saw the Mister Softee ice cream franchise, selling soft serve ice cream from mobile ice cream vans. Unable to license the brand in the UK, Facchino set up his own Mr. Whippy franchise in Birmingham in 1958, starting with a fleet of six vans.
The company was purchased by Unilever in 1966.

Charitable soup kitchens proliferated in nineteenth-century Europe and North America. Three soup kitchens operating in England between 1870 and 1910 are compared
two were Jewish soup kitchens, the other was an English (non-Jewish) charity. Institutional buildings are often analyzed using Foucault-derived models of control based on surveillance and punishment. Such models may not explain fully charities, their buildings, or their method of reform. Historical archaeology can show how charity that coerces or dehumanizes the poor is less likely to create lasting improvements in the behaviors it is seeking to reform than charity that adopts a more positive approach.
The Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen
Documentary History
The Jewish soup kitchen in Manchester had its first meeting in November 1895 (Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen 1912). The committee was formed by local rabbis
the women present formed a sub-committee to organize fund-raising. By 1904, half of the main committee was made up of women. The kitchen opened three times a week from Chanukah (i.e., in early 1896) until Passover. The committee adopted the name The Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor Manchester, after the London soup kitchen. In 1908 the name was changed to The Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen.
The committee located a site on the corner of Exchange Street (now Empire Street) and Southall Street, opposite the northeast corner of Strangeways Prison, on the western side of the Jewish community. Plans were drawn up by architect Thomas Bushell. Fundraising for the new building included a penny-brick fund by which less well-off donors could sponsor a brick for the cost of one penny.
Michael Marks, the co-founder of department store Marks & Spencer and an active committee member, made a substantial donation in 1905 for funding tickets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRAJ17 - A bascule bridge (also referred to as a drawbridge or a lifting bridge) is a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continuously balances a span, or leaf, throughout its upward swing to provide clearance for boat traffic. It may be single- or double-leafed.
The name comes from the French term for balance scale, which employs the same principle. Bascule bridges are the most common type of movable span because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate, while providing the possibility for unlimited vertical clearance for marine traffic.
There are three types of bascule bridge and the counterweights to the span may be located above or below the bridge deck.
The fixed-trunnion (sometimes a Chicago bascule) rotates around a large axle that raises the span(s). The Chicago bascule name derives from the location where it is widely used, and is a refinement by Joseph Strauss of the fixed-trunnion.
The rolling lift trunnion (sometimes a Scherzer rolling lift), raises the span by rolling on a track resembling a rocking-chair base. The Scherzer rolling lift is a refinement patented in 1893 by American engineer William Donald Scherzer.
The rarer Rall type combines rolling lift with longitudinal motion on trunnions when opening.[4] It was patented (1901) by Theodor Rall. One of the few surviving examples is the Broadway Bridge (1913), in Portland, Oregon

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP9HTW - The Whispering Knights is a 'portal dolmen' burial chamber that consists of four upright stones and a large fallen capstone. The so-called portal' facade is formed by three stones that look like a giant doorway facing down the hill and it was probably intended to be seen from that side. Originally there were two or three more uprights to support the capstone which would have been placed on top, possibly at a rakish angle, to form a table-like 'dolmen' structure. At one time it was believed to be part of a long barrow, but excavations in the 1980s suggested that it is more likely to have been free-standing and intended to impress. The very large pillar-like stone on the left of the portal is the largest of all the Rollright Stones, and with the capstone in place on top (as it was until the 18th century) the chamber would have been even more striking. It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying. Intriguingly, although it looks as if the central slab of the portal should be supporting the pillars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TX - As one of the few explicitly gender-separated spaces, the toilet has become a prominent site of conflict and a focal point for gender-critical' feminism. In this article we draw upon an AHRC-funded project, Around the Toilet, to reflect upon and critique trans-exclusionary and trans-hostile narratives of toilet spaces. Such narratives include ciscentric, heteronormative and gender essentialist positions within toilet research and activism which, for example, equate certain actions and bodily functions (such as menstruation) to a particular gender, decry the need for all-gender toilets, and cast suspicion upon the intentions of trans women in public toilet spaces. These include explicitly transmisogynist discourses perpetuated largely by those calling themselves gender-critical' feminists, but also extend to national media, right-wing populist discourses and beyond. We use Around the Toilet data to argue that access to safe and comfortable toilets plays a fundamental role in making trans lives possible. Furthermore, we contend that whether naive, ignorant or explicitly transphobic trans-exclusionary positions do little to improve toilet access for the majority, instead putting trans people, and others with visible markers of gender difference, at a greater risk of violence, and participating in the dangerous homogenisation of womanhood. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKB6H1 - A gibbet is any instrument of public execution (including guillotine, executioner's block, impalement stake, hanging gallows, or related scaffold). Gibbeting is the use of a gallows-type structure from which the dead or dying bodies of criminals were hanged on public display to deter other existing or potential criminals. Occasionally, the gibbet was also used as a method of execution, with the criminal being left to die of exposure, thirst and/or starvation. The practice of placing a criminal on display within a gibbet is also called hanging in chains
Gibbeting was a common law punishment, which a judge could impose in addition to execution. This practice was regularized in England by the Murder Act 1751, which empowered judges to impose this for murder. It was most often used for traitors, murderers, highwaymen, pirates, and sheep stealers and was intended to discourage others from committing similar offenses. The structures were therefore often placed next to public highways (frequently at crossroads) and waterways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7R - Westminster is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster. It is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines. On the Circle and District lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and on the Jubilee line it is between Green Park and Waterloo. It is in Travelcard Zone 1. The station is located at the corner of Bridge Street and Victoria Embankment and is close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, and the London Eye. Also close by are Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Westminster Millennium Pier, the Treasury, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Supreme Court.
The station is in two parts: sub-surface platforms opened in 1868 by the District Railway (DR) as part of the company's first section of the Inner Circle route and deep level platforms opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension from Green Park to Stratford. A variety of underground and main line services have operated over the sub-surface tracks, but the original station was completely rebuilt in conjunction with the construction of the deep level platforms and Portcullis House, which sits above the station.
The station was opened as Westminster Bridge on 24 December 1868 by the steam-operated District Railway (DR) (now the District line) when the railway opened the first section of its line from South Kensington.
As part of the Transported by Design programme of activities, on 15 October 2015, after two months of public voting, Westminster tube station was elected by Londoners as one of the 10 favourite transport design icons.
The station is in London fare zone 1. On the District and Circle lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and, on the Jubilee line, it is between Green Park and Waterloo.

The hotel was designed by Charles Trubshaw in Edwardian Baroque style and is a Grade II* listed building.
The Midland Hotel at night
Built at the junction of Peter Street and Lower Mosley Street opposite Manchester Central railway station, terminus for Midland Railway express trains to London St Pancras, the hotel was designed by Charles Trubshaw and constructed between 1898 and 1903 for the Midland Railway Company at a cost of more than £1 million. In 1908, The Railway News reported that the hotel had over 70,000 guests in its first year and described it as a twentieth century palace. The hotel had a 1,000-seat purpose-built theatre where opera, drama and early Annie Horniman performances were staged, and a roof terrace where a string quartet performed.
The Midland Hotel was allegedly coveted by Adolf Hitler, who maintained a keen interest in architecture, as a possible Nazi headquarters in Britain. American intelligence speculated that the area of Manchester around the town hall was spared from bombing during the Second World War so as not to damage or destroy the Midland Hotel.
Charles Rolls met Henry Royce in the Midland Hotel, leading to the formation of Rolls-Royce Limited in 1904. The Queen Mother dined in the hotel's Trafford Restaurant in November 1959 after attending a Royal Variety Performance at the Palace Theatre. The Beatles were famously refused access to the French Restaurant for being inappropriately dressed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC40YC - Everyman Media Group plc (known as Everyman Cinemas) is a cinema company based in London, England. The company was founded in 2000, when entrepreneur Daniel Broch bought the original Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, London, which dated to 1933, which before then was a theatre. Broch led the growth of the company with the acquisition in 2008 of Screen Cinemas to add more locations. This coincided with Broch selling a majority stake in the enlarged company, though he remains a shareholder. Following the acquisition, the group has refurbished or plans to refurbish a number of cinemas. Those already refurbished include Walton, Belsize Park, Baker Street, and The Screen On The Green in Islington. Everyman's cinemas have one to five screens, a small number of which offer 3D.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T328 - The Trust was formed in 2017 by like-minded leaders of local primary and secondary schools in Warrington along with Priestley College.
Our intention was to work collaboratively to improve outcomes for children and young people in the Warrington area and this collective responsibility is one we maintain to this day.
Our mission is to serve, challenge and empower the educational community. We enact our mission by providing highly effective services to our academies, supporting strong leadership, investing in the workforce and inspiring our children and young people.
All of our work is underpinned by a set of core values, they are:
Inclusivity and social justice
Educational excellence
Collaboration and interdependence
Challenge and service
Care and sustainability
Celebrating difference
These values inform everything we do as a trust and all of our services and working practices are designed around these concepts.
TCAT is a unique trust, being the first in the country to include primary and secondary academies together with a sixth form college.
TCAT also includes a Church of England High School, Sir Thomas Boteler, whose faith foundation is assured through representation from the Dioceses of Chester and Liverpool.
As an inclusive MAT with a strong moral purpose we are committed to providing an environment and education where every young person is nurtured, challenged and inspired to achieve the very best for themselves and their communities. Young people are at the heart of everything we do.
There are currently 10 academies within the trust including four primary academies, three with nurseries, five secondary academies and a sixth form college.
We have close to 8,000 children and young people in our care along with around 1,000 staff.
This may seem like a huge number of people, however we pride ourselves on maintaining an intimacy within this which is built upon positive and professional relationships.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D7WMP7 - Hexel's managing director Craig Whittaker said: We all wanted to say thanks to our heroes in the NHS and all the key workers who are working to keep the country going whilst everyone is enjoying the sunshine at home, complaining about been bored.
I'm anxious just going to the shops and those guys are facing the virus head-on every day risking their lives to help people, so this is the least we could do to show our thanks.
I wanted to do something special for them, and rainbows seem to be the thing of the moment I thought I'd paint the biggest one I could as a thank you to the NHS and key workers.
It's been great to see people's faces while we've been painting it.
They have absolutely loved it, it's made people smile when everyone is worried and miserable at the moment it's been really uplifting and it looks great.
Hexel was first set up as a computer shop on Cairo Street in the town centre in 1996 before moving to its current home around 15 years ago, making it one of Warrington's longest established IT firms.
It took Craig, his wife Pandy and two of the company's engineers roughly a week to paint the side of the building before work was completed yesterday, Wednesday, with a few finishing touches.
He added: It's probably taken us about a week to paint the rainbow all in all.
The Union Jack was quite a landmark that everyone knew, so I didn't want to lose that.
I can't believe it's eight years ago since we did it, that made everyone smile as well.
People are always saying are you the place with the Union Jack on it?'.
It might come back at some point in a year or two when all of this is over.
I've got plenty of rainbow paint leftover if anybody needs any.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84J9R - Irish Writers' Union, the Society of Irish Playwrights,
The Dublin Writers Museum was opened in November 1991 at No 18, Parnell Square, Dublin, Ireland. The museum occupies an original 18th-century house, which accommodates the museum rooms, library, gallery, and administration area. The annexe behind it has a coffee shop and bookshop on the ground floor and exhibition and lecture rooms on the floors above. Dublin stuccatore Michael Stapleton decorated the upstairs gallery. The Irish Writers' Centre, next door in No 19, contains the meeting rooms and offices of the Irish Writers' Union, the Society of Irish Playwrights, the Irish Children's Book Trust and the Irish Translators' & Interpreters' Association. The basement beneath both houses is occupied by the Chapter One restaurant.
The Museum was established to promote interest, through its collection, displays and activities, in Irish literature as a whole and in the lives and works of individual Irish writers. Through its association with the Irish Writers' Centre it provides a link with living writers and the international literary scene. On a national level it acts as a centre, simultaneously pulling together the strands of Irish literature and complementing the smaller, more detailed museums devoted to individuals like James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats and Patrick Pearse. It functions as a place where people can come from Dublin, Ireland and abroad to experience the phenomenon of Irish writing both as history and as actuality.
The writers featured in the Museum are those who have made an important contribution to Irish or international literature or, on a local level, to the literature of Dublin. It is a view of Irish literature from a Dublin perspective.
On display in the museum are literary ephemera and memorabilia, including a detailed replica of The Book of Kells, Samuel Beckett's phone, a letter from 'tenement aristocrat' Brendan Behan to his brother.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG3YEA - Dublin's Coat of Arms is the identifying emblem of the city and has been in use, in one form or another, for at least 400 years. The full Coat of Arms shows three burning castles on a shield, flanked by two female figures
One of the female figures holds a scale and depicts Justice (without the usual blindfold), the other has a sword representing Law, while each holds an olive branch. Below the shield on a scroll is the city's motto, Obedientia Civium Urbis Felicitas, which translates as the obedience of the citizens produces a happy city.
The origin of the Coat of Arms is unknown, but there are numerous theories, including:
The castles are watch towers outside the city walls.
The castle is Dublin Castle and is repeated three times because of the mystical significance of the number three.
The castles are not castles but represent three gates into the ancient Viking city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGHB36 - A robot is a machineespecially one programmable by a computer capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. Robots can be guided by an external control device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed on the lines of human form, but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to their aesthetics.
Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from humanoids such as Honda's Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) and TOSY's TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot (TOPIO) to industrial robots, medical operating robots, patient assist robots, dog therapy robots, collectively programmed swarm robots, UAV drones such as General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, and even microscopic nano robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own. Autonomous things are expected to proliferate in the coming decade, with home robotics and the autonomous car as some of the main drivers.
The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing is robotics. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics. These robots have also created a newer branch of robotics: soft robotics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475N6 - Coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster by the British tabloid The Sun led to the newspaper's decline in Liverpool and the broader Merseyside region, with organised boycotts against it. The disaster occurred at a football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters were crushed to death, and several hundred others were injured, due to negligence by the South Yorkshire Police. On 19 April 1989, four days after the incident, The Sun published a front-page story with the headline The Truth containing a number of falsehoods alleging that Liverpool supporters were responsible for the accident.
Though other newspapers reported stories critical of the fans, The Sun's repetition of unreliable claims as fact and position on the incident in the aftermath of the event led to outrage amongst Liverpudlians. From 1993 to 2012, editor Kelvin MacKenzie, who was in charge of many of the publication decisions, gave conflicting comments on whether he was sorry for the front-page story and said that his mistake was in trusting a Conservative Member of ParliamentIrvine Patnick, who was quoted in the piece. The Sun issued apologies in 2004, after Wayne Rooney was criticised for giving exclusive interviews to the paper, in 2012, under the headline The Real Truth, and in 2016, on a page 89 story in the aftermath of a second governmental inquest that concluded fans were unlawfully killed in the disaster.
After a protest in Kirkby in which women burned copies of the newspaper, The Sun (referred to as The S*n or The Scum) was widely boycotted in Merseyside. Sales have been estimated to have dropped from 55,000 per day in the region to 12,000 in 2019. Campaigns against the newspaper including Total Eclipse of the Sun and Shun the Sun first aimed to decrease purchases of the tabloid, and then supply of it by retailers. Journalists from the paper have been denied access to interviews at Liverpool and Everton grounds. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF3C - The Countryside Code is a set of guidelines designed for use by both the public and land managers across England and Wales. It is titled as a guide for enjoying parks and waterways, coast and countryside. It was established in 2004 as a relaunch of the The Country Code, which existed since the 1930s.
The Countryside Code is managed by Natural England in England and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Whilst both organisations oversee the Countryside Code, they are each individually responsible for promoting it in their respective country.
The Country Code evolved from the work of various organisations and had several different versions from the 1930s. The most widely accepted version of The Country Code was published in 1981 by the Countryside Commission:
Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
Guard against all risk of fire
Fasten all gates
Keep your dogs under close control
Keep to public paths across farmland
Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
Take your litter home
Help to keep all water clean
Protect wildlife, plants and trees
Take special care on country roads
Make no unnecessary noise
In the 1960s and 70s the Country Code was publicised by several public information films shown in cinemas and on television.
At some point after 1981, the instruction to fasten all gates was replaced with one to instead leave gates as found

The world of music in the palm of your hand was Camp Baird's Industries Limited's slogan when releasing the Wondergram in 1959. Small enough to fit into the user's hand, this record-playing device promised to incorporate the quality of a regular gramophone into a battery-operated portable record player that could be taken to the beach or on picnics.
Designed by Sergio Favaro, an Italian national who settled in Shrewsbury, England in 1958 and produced by Hartley Electromotives (later, Camp Baird) the portable record player played all standard-size records at two main speeds. Equipped with a low-consumption 6-volt battery, an amplifier, and weighing only two pounds, the Wondergram worked by placing the record on a small automatic spinning wheel which turned the disc. Though produced in England, the Wondergram found its largest market in North America where it was sold as the Emerson Wondergram.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAEH - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA83 - The Zündapp Bella is a motor scooter manufactured by motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp from 1953 to 1964. Approximately 130,000 Bella scooters were sold, with engine sizes ranging from 150 cc to 200 cc.
The design of the Bella was heavily influenced by that of the Parilla Levriere, also known as the Parilla Greyhound. Along with being similar in general appearance, both designs have prominent air tunnels along the centreline of the scooter to allow fresh air to cool the engine without a fan.
Early Bella with kick starter and telescopic fork
As introduced in 1953, the Bella had a 146 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine, 12 inch wheels, 6 V electrics, a kick starter, and an undamped telescopic fork. The fuel tank was mounted under the seat.
A version of the Bella called the Suburbanette was made for the United States market from 1953 to 1954. The Suburbanette was stripped of the body panels enclosing the engine. 370 Suburbanettes were sold. An export version of the last 150cc Bella, the R154K (K for kickstarter), with higher Western (buckhorn) bars and no dynastarter, came to the United States in the later 1950s.[10]
A 197 cc (12.0 cu in) engine producing 10 hp (7.5 kW) became available in May 1954. The front suspension was later changed from a telescopic fork to an Earles-type leading link fork with a single suspension unit on left side of the fork. Later Bella scooters also had 12 V electricals powered by two 6 V batteries.[citation needed] Electric starters also became available on the Bella.
The Bella was imported into the United Kingdom by Ambassador Motorcycles, and into the United States by International Motorcycle Company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM1TEK - Bristol City Council is the local authority of Bristol, England. The council is a unitary authority, and is unusual in the United Kingdom in that its executive function is controlled by its directly elected mayor. Bristol has 34 wards, electing a total of 70 councillors
The council was formed by the Local Government Act 1972. It was first elected in 1973, a year before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the non-metropolitan district of Bristol on 1 April 1974.
Under the Local Government Act 1972 Bristol as a non-metropolitan district council would share power with the Avon County Council. This arrangement lasted until 1996 when Avon County Council was abolished and Bristol City Council gained responsibility for services that had been provided by the county council.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4H5 - Holy Trinity Church, Wood Green, is a Grade II listed Victorian church in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The Church was built in 18489, on land given by the bishop of Winchester and the duke of Marlborough
the cost was met largely from subscriptions, and a gift from the rector Charles Jerram. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey.
The church of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar quoins and dressings and a gabled stone slate roof. There is a two-bay chancel with pointed moulded doorway and Caernarvon-arched window. The five-bay nave has offset buttresses, lancets and two-light windows in each east bay.
An organ was installed in 1860, and new choir stalls and altar rails were fitted in 1869. In 1887 the vestry was enlarged to designs by Clapton Crabb Rolfe, and in 1895 an organ by Charles Martin of Oxford replaced the earlier one.
A new pulpit was fitted in 1909 in memory of Samuel and Mary Shuffrey. It was created in the Wood Green workshop of their son Leonard Shuffrey, the leading architect and architectural designer, who is buried in the Churchyard. James Allen Shuffrey, the notable watercolour artist, and brother of Leonard Shuffrey, sang in Wood Green Church Choir as a boy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D2 - St Ives is on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, in the old part of the town, the streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand
St Ives (Cornish: Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'.[28] The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design.
A. K. Hamilton Jenkin describes how the St Ives fisherman strictly observed Sunday as a day of rest. St Ives was a very busy fishing port and seining was the usual method of fishing. Seining was carried out by a set of three boats of different sizes, the largest two carrying seine nets of different sizes. The total number of crew was seventeen or eighteen. However this came to an end in 1924.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B0D - Clapham Junction railway station is near St John's Hill in the south-west of Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Although it is in Battersea, the area around the station is commonly identified as Clapham Junction.
Many routes from London's two busiest termini, London Waterloo and London Victoria, funnel through the station making it one of the busiest in Europe by number of trains using it, more than one hundred an hour outside peak periods.
Each day about 2,000 trains, most stopping, pass through the station, more than through any other station in Europe.[5] At peak times 180 trains per hour pass through of which 117 stop. It is not the busiest station by number of passengers, most of whom (about 430,000 on a weekday, of which 135,000 are at rush hours) pass through. Interchanges make some 40% of the activity and on that basis too it is the busiest station in the UK.[6]
In 2011, the station had three entrances, all with staffed ticket offices, though only the south-east entrance is open 24 hours a day. The most heavily used of the three, this leads from St John's Hill via a small indoor shopping centre, into a subway some 15 ft (4.6 m) wide that connects to the eastern ends of all platforms.
The north entrance, which has restricted opening hours, leads from Grant Road to the same subway. The subway is crowded during rush hours, with the ticket barriers at the ends are pinch points.

The Scheirwater Lloyd clock sits over the entrance to the Hornby library from the Picton Reading Room.
Chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum Sir James Picton laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK.
It was completed in 1879. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HW9A - Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita, is a poisonous and psychoactive basidiomycete fungus, one of many in the genus Amanita. Native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Amanita muscaria has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the southern hemisphere, generally as a symbiont with pine plantations, and is now a true cosmopolitan species. It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees.
The quintessential toadstool, it is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually red mushroom, one of the most recognisable and widely encountered in popular culture. Several subspecies with differing cap colour have been recognised, including the brown regalis (considered a separate species), the yellow-orange flavivolvata, guessowii, formosa, and the pinkish persicina. Genetic studies published in 2006 and 2008 show several sharply delineated clades that may represent separate species.

It was built in 1776 by a Trust of the Major, Recorder and Aldermen of Chester to warn ships entering between the Dee and the Mersey Estuary. It was replaced by a pile light and was decommissioned in 1844. It is now a privately owned property.
The lighthouse was listed on the property market in November 2011 by then owner James McAllister, along with two acres of land, for £100,000. It was eventually sold in April 2012 for £90,000 to a private couple who continue to own the property.

But since 2001, Inovyn (a wholly owned subsidiary of Ineos) has operated the extensive chemical works in the west of the town, employing 750 people in 2020. In Runcorn, Invoyn manufactures chlorine, caustic soda and chlorinated derivatives. It also produces salt, made from brine transported by pipeline from the saltfields of central Cheshire, and sulphuric acid. Several other chemical manufacturers also have a presence at the site, including Koura (formerly Mexichem Fluor), Industrial Chemicals, Packed Chlorine Limited, VYNOVA and Runcorn MCP Ltd (a joint venture between INOVYN and VYNOVA). The site is considered to be of strategic national importance to the UK. The site includes two independently owned power stations
the 810 MW natural gas fired Rocksavage Power Station and the Runcorn Energy Recovery Facility operated by Viridor which also supplies heat to the Inovyn facility. ICI's other former site in Runcorn comprising offices and laboratories is now the Heath Business and Technical Park, which provides office, laboratory, conference, and leisure facilities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF1355 - Saddam Hussein playing cards where Saddam is the Ace of spades - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War and again in World War IIArmy Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars todayand in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, and seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDAF - A ballpoint pen, also known as a biro (British English), ball pen (Hong Kong, Indian and Philippine English), or dot pen[2] (Nepali English), is a pen that dispenses ink (usually in paste form) over a metal ball at its point, i.e. over a ball point. The metal commonly used is steel, brass, or tungsten carbide.[3] The design was conceived and developed as a cleaner and more reliable alternative to dip pens and fountain pens, and it is now the world's most-used writing instrument
millions are manufactured and sold daily. It has influenced art and graphic design and spawned an artwork genre.
Some pen manufacturers produce designer ballpoint pens for the high-end and collectors' markets.
The concept of using a ball point within a writing instrument to apply ink to paper has existed since the late 19th century. In these inventions, the ink was placed in a thin tube whose end was blocked by a tiny ball, held so that it could not slip into the tube or fall out of the pen.
The first patent for a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888 to John J. Loud, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write on rough surfacessuch as wood, coarse wrapping-paper, and other articles which fountain pens could not. Loud's pen had a small rotating steel ball held in place by a socket. Although it could be used to mark rough surfaces such as leather, as Loud intended, it proved too coarse for letter-writing. With no commercial viability, its potential went unexploited, and the patent eventually lapsed
László Bíró, a Hungarian newspaper editor (later a naturalized Argentine) frustrated by the amount of time that he wasted filling up fountain pens and cleaning up smudged pages, noticed that inks used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge-free. He decided to create a pen using the same type of ink. Bíró enlisted the help of his brother György, a dentist with useful knowledge of chemistry, to develop viscous ink formula

Revealed after building work.
The company was founded as Wills, Watkins & Co. by Henry Overton Wills I and his partner Watkins, who opened a shop in Castle Street, Bristol in 1786. After the retirement of his partner in 1789 it became Wills & Co..
From 1791 to 1793 the company was known as Lilly, Wills & Co when it merged with the firm of Peter Lilly, who owned a snuff mill on the Land Yeo at Barrow Gurney, and then, from 1793 to his retirement in 1803, as Lilly and Wills.
