Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRNKH - Trainline digital rail booking is displayed on an iPhone resting diagonally across a printed British railway timetable. The app screen shows an outbound and return journey to Edinburgh Waverley on Tuesday 23 June, with options to download the tickets, print the eTicket or add it to Apple Wallet. A reminder not to forget the passenger's Railcard is also clearly visible. Beneath the smartphone, the traditional timetable page is headed Glasgow, Carlisle, Preston, Crewe and London, representing the principal West Coast Main Line corridor.
The image contrasts modern mobile ticketing with the dense columns, station names and departure times of a conventional printed railway timetable. It illustrates how UK passengers increasingly plan journeys, buy fares and carry travel documents through smartphone apps while older paper information remains associated with railway history and timetable research. Trainline distinguishes between eTickets, which may be supplied as a PDF and stored on a phone, and Mobile Tickets held within its app. Depending on the ticket type and route, a barcode can be scanned at a station gate or presented to railway staff for inspection.
Edinburgh Waverley is a major Scottish rail destination and is served by operators using both the East Coast and West Coast networks. The visible timetable heading connects Glasgow and Carlisle with Preston, Crewe and London, major locations on the West Coast Main Line, a major British inter-city route. The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of digital transformation, paperless travel, rail booking technology, smartphone use, contactless passenger journeys, ticket retailing, Railcard discounts, journey planning, railway timetables, public transport, business travel and domestic tourism. It may also illustrate dependence on mobile devices, battery power and downloadable travel credentials, alongside the continuing need for passengers to carry any Railcard used to obtain a discounted fare.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF22Y - Preserved Jenny Spinner, or string-laying machine, is displayed at Verdant Works, Dundee's museum of jute and industrial history. The substantial green-painted machine contains bobbin shafts, chains, gears, pulleys and a long conveyor fitted with rows of small projecting spikes. These components guided and arranged strands of yarn as they were combined into string or light rope for commercial and industrial use.
The machine was manufactured by Fairbairn, Lawson, Combe, Barbour Ltd of Leeds and Belfast and dates from 1937. It formed part of a collection of jute-processing machinery used for teaching spinning and weaving at Dundee College of Technology before entering the Dundee Heritage Trust collection. Its survival provides a detailed physical record of the engineering involved in transforming spun jute yarn into finished cordage.
Jute was once central to Dundee's economy and identity, earning the city the nickname Jutopolis. Imported raw fibre was softened, carded, spun, woven and manufactured into sacks, carpet backing, twine and other durable products. Machinery such as the Jenny Spinner demonstrates how repetitive manual processes were mechanised to achieve more consistent output and greater production speed.
The close view reveals the machine's robust steel construction, exposed drive systems and practical factory design. A historic image of rope or twine production is displayed behind the equipment, helping visitors understand its original function. The exhibit supports editorial coverage of industrial archaeology, textile technology, Scottish manufacturing, natural fibres, factory labour, engineering education and the preservation of Dundee's internationally significant jute heritage

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWJP0 - Close-up detail of the word Hi-Fidelity on a vintage-style jukebox, photographed with warm orange and red reflections across glossy black trim and striped retro lettering. The image focuses tightly on the decorative typography rather than the full machine, making it a flexible stock photograph for stories about recorded music, vinyl culture, jukebox design, retro interiors, nostalgia, bars, diners, pubs, cafés, music venues and twentieth-century popular culture. The phrase hi-fidelity, more commonly written high fidelity or hi-fi, refers to sound reproduction intended to be clearer, richer and more accurate than ordinary playback, a term strongly associated with post-war home audio, record players, stereo systems, jukeboxes and the golden age of analogue listening. The image can illustrate the romance of choosing songs from a jukebox, the tactile appeal of physical music technology, the social history of cafés and bars, and the way music machines helped shape youth culture, dating, nightlife and leisure. The close framing, shallow angle and glowing reflections give the photograph a stylish abstract quality, useful for editorial or commercial themes around audio equipment, retro branding, music nostalgia, vintage design, popular entertainment, vinyl records, classic rock and roll, rhythm and blues, soul, pop music and pub culture. Visible details include metallic-looking block letters, parallel orange stripes, dark casing, reflective surfaces and warm ambient light, all suggesting an indoor venue or display setting. With no visible people and no wider location markers, the image works as a generic background or conceptual shot for music articles, playlist features, record collecting, hi-fi culture, vintage electronics, interior design, themed restaurants, classic Americana, British pubs using retro décor, and wider stories about how recorded music moved from jukebox cabinets to streaming platforms while keeping a powerful hold on memory and atmosphere.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM015 - Delegates attend a Main Stage seminar at Digital Transformation EXPO Manchester, commonly known as DTX Manchester, inside Manchester Central on 30 April 2026. Rows of seated technology professionals face a large presentation screen and speaker platform during the second day of the two-day business technology conference and exhibition. The wide interior view shows conference seating, stage branding, exhibition lighting and a blue-carpeted aisle within the former railway station building now used as one of Manchester's main convention venues.
DTX Manchester took place on 29 and 30 April 2026 and brought together technology leaders, suppliers, consultants and decision-makers involved in digital transformation. The event programme covered subjects including artificial intelligence, data, cyber security, cloud computing, software engineering, workplace technology and the practical delivery of organisational change. Main Stage sessions combined strategic discussion with examples of implementation, giving attendees access to panel debates, keynote presentations and specialist insight from industry speakers.
The photograph records the professional conference environment from the rear of the audience, emphasising participation, knowledge sharing and business networking rather than an individual presenter. It also illustrates the scale of corporate technology events, where seminars run alongside supplier stands, product demonstrations and meetings across the exhibition floor.
This editorial image is suitable for themes involving digital transformation, information technology strategy, enterprise software, artificial intelligence, cyber security, technology conferences, professional learning, corporate events and the northern England digital economy. The busy seating area and large branded stage convey a serious business atmosphere, while the historic Manchester Central setting links contemporary technology debate with one of the city's best-known event spaces

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M9B - DTX Manchester exhibition inside Manchester Central, showing delegates, trade stands, digital screens and the wide arched roof of the former Manchester Central railway station, now used as a major convention and exhibition venue. The scene records a business technology event focused on digital transformation, enterprise IT, cloud, data, AI, cyber security, software engineering, infrastructure, managed services and workplace technology. The image is useful for editorial and commercial use around Manchester's technology sector, business conferences, trade exhibitions, digital strategy, innovation, networking, procurement, supplier showcases and professional learning. DTX Manchester 2026 is publicly listed as taking place at Manchester Central on 29 and 30 April 2026, so the supplied date of 30 March 2026 should be treated cautiously unless confirmed by the photographer's own capture data. The event is associated with Manchester Digital and Manchester Tech Week activity, bringing technology leaders, suppliers, consultants and business users together in the city centre. The photograph shows an indoor exhibition floor with blue carpet, visitor seating, delegate movement, branded stands and the distinctive glazed end wall and clock of Manchester Central, giving strong visual context for a large-scale B2B event. It can illustrate stories about digital transformation in the North of England, AI adoption, cloud migration, cyber security resilience, data governance, managed IT services, software selection, supplier marketing, technology procurement and the growth of Manchester as a UK digital hub. The lighting is artificial indoor exhibition lighting, with a cool business-event atmosphere and no visible weather conditions. The image also works for conference attendance, business networking, exhibition venues, urban regeneration of historic railway architecture and Manchester Central as a major civic and commercial events space.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEBD - Blue automated passport control eGates stand in a glass-walled Italian airport border control area for non-Schengen passengers, showing the increasingly digital nature of European travel, immigration and frontier management. The Reco 3.26 branded machines are used for automated border control and passenger flow management, with passport scanning, biometric identity checks and registration points linked to facial images and fingerprints. For travellers from outside the EU and Schengen area, including many UK passengers after Brexit, the first-use enrolment process can mean extra time at the border as a digital record is created and checked. The scene is commercially useful for illustrating airport queues, travel delays, biometric surveillance, immigration technology, border security, smart borders, post-Brexit travel, EU Entry/Exit System processes, passenger processing and the practical reality of automation in busy terminals. The equipment is clean, blue and modern, but the image also hints at the tension between faster digital journeys and the inconvenience caused when new systems require unfamiliar steps, staff guidance or repeated registration. Visible scanners, kiosks, barriers and eGate lanes create a documentary view of contemporary airport infrastructure rather than a staged technology display. The indoor lighting, polished floor and queue barriers suggest a controlled terminal environment, likely at arrivals or departures where non-Schengen travellers pass immigration checks. The photograph has strong editorial value for stories on EES implementation, biometric data privacy, passport control modernisation, identity verification, Schengen external borders, airport capacity, holiday travel disruption and the everyday use of computer vision in public-sector security. It can also support broader features on border automation, data protection, UK and EU travel rules, delayed passengers, airline pressure and changing international air travel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M68 - A McLaren MCL38 Formula One car displayed at Silverstone during a British Grand Prix event, presented in the team's distinctive papaya orange and black colour scheme. The side view reveals the sculpted aerodynamic bodywork, front and rear wings, halo cockpit protection, Pirelli tyres and prominent sponsor branding including Chrome, Cisco, Dewalt and Jack Daniel's. The display plinth carries the responsible drinking message Never Drink and Drive , while spectators gather around the covered exhibition area beneath a grey, showery summer sky.
McLaren introduced the MCL38 as its challenger for the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri sharing driving duties. The car became one of the most successful McLarens of the modern era, earning six Grand Prix victories and helping the team secure the 2024 Constructors' Championship, its first for 26 years. It scored points at every event and completed the season without a mechanical retirement across the 24 Grands Prix and six Sprint races.
The alcohol-awareness wording reflects Jack Daniel's role as an official McLaren Formula One Team partner and places a clear road-safety message alongside the glamour, speed and commercial sponsorship of elite motorsport. It creates a useful contrast between controlled competition on a closed racing circuit and the dangers of alcohol-impaired driving on public roads.
This editorial image is suitable for themes involving Formula One technology, McLaren racing heritage, British motorsport, responsible drinking campaigns, road safety, alcohol sponsorship, commercial partnerships and fan engagement. The close profile view highlights the MCL38's low stance, exposed wheels and complex aerodynamic surfaces, while the crowd and temporary event setting document the promotional displays surrounding a major international race weekend

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFT2 - This editorial photograph captures Out of Order Northern Rail Ticket Machine, in Warrington, Cheshire, North West England, UK, WA1. The row metadata places the subject at Warrington Central, Winwick Street, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA2 7FW. The spreadsheet date indicates 18 October 2023, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows Warrington, Out of Order, Northern Rail, Ticket, machine, rail, railway, Central, with search-relevant terms including Warrington, Out of Order, Northern Rail, Ticket, machine, rail, railway, Central, station, contactless, Cheshire, England, UK, tickets. Transport pictures are especially useful because they show the infrastructure and passenger experience behind policy debates about connectivity, reliability and regional investment. Warrington sits between Liverpool and Manchester and is often used as a practical example of a North West town balancing commuter growth, older industrial roots, retail change, new development, road traffic, local services and community identity. Transport images are useful because they show the lived reality behind policy debates about public transport, reliability, fares, regional connectivity, disabled access, climate goals, commuter patterns and the social value of buses and railways. The image can work as a lead picture, a supporting cutaway, a contextual inset or a visual metaphor for wider stories about place, services, consumer behaviour, heritage, transport, culture and public life. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RK - Lilium GmbH is a German aerospace company which is the developer of the Lilium Jet, an electrically powered personal air vehicle capable of VTOL flight.
History
Lilium GmbH was founded in 2015 by four engineers and PhD students at the Technical University of Munich, Daniel Wiegand, Sebastian Born, Matthias Meiner and Patrick Nathen.
The Lilium Eagle, an unmanned two-seat proof of concept model, performed its maiden flight at the airfield Mindelheim-Mattsies near Munich in Germany on 20 April 2017. The Lilium Jet five-seater prototype Phoenix first flew in May 2019. The prototype was powered by 36 electrically-powered jacketed-propellers mounted in movable flaps that can point down for vertical takeoff and gradually moved to a horizontal position to provide forward thrust. The five-seat Lilium Jet is capable of achieving a top speed of 300km/h and targets a range of 300 km
In January 2020 Aerokurier published a report which stated that Lilium could not meet its stated aircraft performance goals and would only be able to fly for two minutes at a time. The anonymously-authored report was dismissed by the company but later backed up by four German aerospace academics who wrote that Lilium was using brilliant PR to create an illusory world to attract investors.
In February 2021, Forbes published an article citing a number of former employees that stated the development of Lilium's aircraft was dogged by problems and that the flight test campaign made minimal progress

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0W4WG - A speaker addresses a substantial seated audience during a live conference session at Housing 2023 inside Manchester Central Convention Complex in Manchester, England. Photographed from behind and slightly to the side of the presenter, the wide scene shows the raised stage, transparent lectern, microphone cables and floor-mounted confidence monitor, with rows of housing professionals listening from tiered benches and chairs. A busy trade exhibition continues immediately beyond the open theatre, where supplier stands, digital screens and prominent industry branding include Civica, MRI and other organisations serving housing associations and local authorities.
Housing 2023 was held from 27 to 29 June 2023 and brought together senior executives, operational managers, policymakers, consultants, technology providers and public-sector professionals from across UK social and affordable housing. The annual event combined keynote presentations, policy discussions, specialist seminar stages, networking opportunities and a large commercial exhibition. Conference themes reflected the major pressures facing landlords and residents, including housing supply, affordability, building safety, consumer regulation, tenant satisfaction, damp and mould, decarbonisation, retrofit programmes, digital transformation, data management and improving frontline services.
The photograph captures the scale and atmosphere of a major professional gathering, with delegates concentrating on the speaker while conversations and exhibitor activity continue around the surrounding marketplace. The open session format places debate and learning directly within the exhibition hall, illustrating the close relationship between public policy, housing operations, professional development and supplier marketing. Manchester Central's distinctive curved former railway-station roof forms a dramatic industrial backdrop, crossed by suspended lighting rigs, cables, banners and temporary exhibition structures.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYMJ - Gridserve Sustainable Energy Limited is a British company founded in 2017 to develop, own and operate critical infrastructure for sustainable energy production. Gridserve opened the UK's first all-electric car charging forecourt in 2020, and plans to open over 100 more over the following five years to charge electric vehicles with 100% renewable energy, supporting the UK's transition to carbon neutrality.
Acts as a vendor and comparison site for the leasing of electric vehicles with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, with 100 trees planted for every car leased. Leased EV customers have the full cost of charging at Gridserve electric forecourts covered.
Installs and operates a network of electric charging hubs and home chargers. A £1bn UK-wide investment is planned to build over 100 public charging stations.
operates photovoltaic power stations, also known as solar farms, supplying renewable electricity to the National Grid. The solar modules are bifacial, allowing them to harvest energy from both sides of the panel. Land at Clay Hill, Bedfordshire serves as one of the UK's first subsidy-free solar farms, coming online in 2017 and comprising 10MW of solar PV and 6MW of energy storage. A solar farm was also constructed by GRIDSERVE for Warrington Borough Council at a site near Easingwold, York
In advance of the UK mandatory phase-out of fossil fuel vehicles by 2030[8] and anticipated mass adoption of electric vehicles, Gridserve is developing a countrywide network of customer-focused forecourts that provide ultra-fast electric vehicle charging services and associated retail. Revenue and profitability are designed to derive from electricity grid balancing services and the provision of solar energy generation. However, the company pointedly does not call them service stations
the planned forecourts are intended to serve local communities, like petrol stations do, rather than serving passing trade on motorways. Facilities include convenience stores, office 'pods'etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDPYAN - A printed circuit board (PCB
also printed wiring board or PWB) is a medium used in electrical and electronic engineering to connect electronic components to one another in a controlled manner. It takes the form of a laminated sandwich structure of conductive and insulating layers: each of the conductive layers is designed with an artwork pattern of traces, planes and other features (similar to wires on a flat surface) etched from one or more sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or between sheet layers of a non-conductive substrate. Electrical components may be fixed to conductive pads on the outer layers in the shape designed to accept the component's terminals, generally by means of soldering, to both electrically connect and mechanically fasten them to it. Another manufacturing process adds vias: plated-through holes that allow interconnections between layers
The Austrian engineer Paul Eisler invented the printed circuit as part of a radio set while working in the UK around 1936. In 1941 a multi-layer printed circuit was used in German magnetic influence naval mines
Around 1943 the USA began to use the technology on a large scale to make proximity fuzes for use in World War II. Such fuzes required an electronic circuit that could withstand being fired from a gun, and could be produced in quantity
Motorola was an early leader in bringing the process into consumer electronics, announcing in August 1952 the adoption of plated circuits in home radios after six years of research and a $1M investment
Originally, every electronic component had wire leads, and a PCB had holes drilled for each wire of each component. The component leads were then inserted through the holes and soldered to the copper PCB traces. This method of assembly is called through-hole construction. In 1949, Moe Abramson and Stanislaus F. Danko of the United States Army Signal Corps developed the Auto-Sembly process in which component leads were inserted into a copper foil interconnection

Danko of the United States Army Signal Corps developed the Auto-Sembly process in which component leads were inserted into a copper foil interconnection

also printed wiring board or PWB) is a medium used in electrical and electronic engineering to connect electronic components to one another in a controlled manner.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K244BY - How to make a phone call from a button A and button B public phone
In order to make a call from a public phone box, you had to have the right coins. This was not too onerous because coins were in everyday use as there were no credit cards. Nevertheless, it was not at all unusual to be stopped in the street and asked if one had change for a phone call. People always tried to oblige each other in this respect, and I never knew of anyone getting mugged when they got out a purse or delved into their pockets for money.
Callers put their coins into the coin slot, dialled the number they wanted and pressed Button A to be heard or Button B to get their money back if no-one answered.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGTC3 - Exeter West Signal Box
Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2TAG - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood until September 2006.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
In spite of the APT's troubled history, the design was highly influential and directly inspired other high speed trains such as the Pendolino. The considerable work on electrification that was carried out hand-in-hand with APT was put to good use with newer non-tilting designs like the British Rail Class 91. The APT's tilt system was returned to the WCML on the British Rail Class 390, based on the Fiat Ferroviaria tilting train design and built by Alstom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRJ9TG - Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. When it opened, Blackpool Tower was the tallest man made structure in the British Empire. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet (158 metres) tall and is the 125th-tallest freestanding tower in the world. Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, an entertainment complex in a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and roof gardens, which was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973.
Background
The Blackpool Tower Company was founded by London-based Standard Contract & Debenture Corporation in 1890
it bought an aquarium on Central Promenade with the intention of building a replica Eiffel Tower on the site. John Bickerstaffe, a former mayor of Blackpool, was asked to become chairman of the new company, and its shares went on sale in July 1891. The Standard Corporation kept 30,000 £1 shares and offered £150,000 worth of shares to the public
initially only two-thirds were taken up, forcing the company to ask for more cash contributions from its existing shareholders, but the poor financial situation of the company, exacerbated by the falling share price, rendered it unable to pay. Bickerstaffe, to avoid the potential collapse of the venture, bought any available shares until his original holding of £500 amounted to £20,000. He also released the Standard Corporation from its share commitments. When the Tower opened in 1894, its success justified the investment of nearly £300,000, and the company made a £30,000 profit in 1896.
Two Lancashire architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, designed the tower and oversaw the laying of its foundation stone on 29 September 1891. By the time the Tower finally opened on 14 May 1894, both men had died. Heenan & Froude, then of Manchester, were appointed structural engineers, supplying and constructing both the tower,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2E018GP - Woolston Weir Hydro project underway at last
long-awaited hydro-electric power installation planned at Woolston Weir since 2013 is finally getting under way.
The scheme which complements the Environment Agency flood defences is being undertaken by Czech company Hydropol and work has begun clearing the site for the arrival of the equipment starting this week.
This renewable energy electricity source will provide sufficient power for 380 typical UK homes and will effectively save in the region of 750 Tonnes of CO2 per year.
The installation will comprise of three Archimedes screw design turbines which are fish friendly. There will also be an improved and brand new fish pass allowing salmon, coarse fish and eels to pass through unharmed.
Locally available national grid connections means there is no need for pylons and there is sufficient separation from residential properties to ensure no operational noise pollution.
It is situated on the opposite bank of the river from Woolston Eyes so poses no threat to any of the wildlife on the local SSSI.
Main construction is planned between August 2020 and January 2021 with turbine delivery in early 2021 and project completion around April 2021.

How was the NHS Covid-19 app planned to work?
Contact tracing apps aim to automate the human process by using the phone in your pocket. More than 30 countries are building tracing apps and the UK is no different. Its tracing software the NHS Covid-19 app has been trialled on the Isle of Wight since May 7. The island was picked as a testbed before wider rollout across the UK and more than 50,000 people on the island have downloaded the app.
It's highly unlikely the Covid-19 virus is going to go away, Jonathan Van-Tam, England's deputy chief medical officer, said as details of the app were revealed at the start of May. Testing and contact tracing is going to have to become part of our daily lives in the future.
Matthew Gould, the CEO for NHSX, the technology arm of the NHS, says the logic for creating the app is clear: it can potentially allow cases to be identified earlier and reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
The app works using Bluetooth signals. Bluetooth technology within phones, which has to be turned on at all times, broadcasts an identifier that is unique to that device. The identifier is essentially a random string of numbers that updates on a regular basis and doesn't include any personal information. When your phone is near another Bluetooth device the two will exchange their identifiers. A list of all the devices, in the form of their unique codes, are stored on your phone for 28 days. Nothing else happens unless a user indicates that they are experiencing coronavirus symptoms.
There is very limited functionality within the app. The only thing that users can do is report if they have Covid-19 symptoms. Within the app there is one central question: how are you feeling today?

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGHB36 - A robot is a machineespecially one programmable by a computer capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. Robots can be guided by an external control device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed on the lines of human form, but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to their aesthetics.
Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from humanoids such as Honda's Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) and TOSY's TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot (TOPIO) to industrial robots, medical operating robots, patient assist robots, dog therapy robots, collectively programmed swarm robots, UAV drones such as General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, and even microscopic nano robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own. Autonomous things are expected to proliferate in the coming decade, with home robotics and the autonomous car as some of the main drivers.
The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing is robotics. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics. These robots have also created a newer branch of robotics: soft robotics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN9B - Standalone audio stereo FM tuners are sought after for audiophile and TV/FM DX applications, especially those produced in the 1970s and early 1980s, when performance and manufacturing standards were among the highest. In many instances the tuner may be modified to improve performance. Electronics specialists and hobbyists buy, collect and restore vintage FM or AM/FM audio tuners on the secondary market. The restoration usually begins with replacing the electrolytic capacitors that may age over time. The tuner is outfitted with improved tolerance and better sounding upgraded parts. Prices have increased relative to the increasing demand for the older audio tuners. Those with the most value are the best sounding, most rare (collectible), the best DX capable (distance reception) and the known build quality of the component, as it left the factory.
Most of the early tuner models were designed and manufactured to receive only the AM broadcast band. As FM became more popular, the limitations of AM became more apparent, and FM became the primary listening focus, especially for stereo and music broadcasting.
The McIntosh MR78 is known as one of the first FM tuners precise enough to tune into a weaker station broadcast on the same frequency as another stronger signal.
In Europe, where a second AM broadcast band is used for longwave broadcasting, tuners may be fitted with both the standard medium wave and the additional longwave band. However, radios with only medium wave are also common, especially in countries where there are no longwave broadcasters. Rarely, radios are sold with only FM and longwave, but no medium wave band. Some tuners may also be equipped with one or more short wave bands.

The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. The Chamberlain Clock is an Edwardian, cast-iron, clock tower in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, England. It was erected in 1903 to mark Joseph Chamberlain's tour of South Africa between 26 December 1902 and 25 February 1903, after the end of the Second Boer War. The clock was unveiled during Chamberlain's lifetime, in January 1904 by Mary Crowninshield Endicott, Joseph Chamberlain's third wife.
Standing at the junction of Vyse and Frederick Streets with Warstone Lane, it is now a local landmark and symbol of the Quarter. Chamberlain had been a resident on Frederick Street and had also helped jewellers through his campaign work to abolish Plate Duties a tax affecting jewellery tradesmen of the time. The timepiece was originally powered by a clockwork winding handle. It was later adapted to electricity but fell into disrepair and lost its chime.
It was fully restored in 1989.

The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Because the definition of a jeweller was not explained in the directory, it is thought that it may contain many irregularities and the number of actual jewellers may be lower. It is thought that by the start of the 19th century, there were around 12 jewellery manufacturing companies, employing approximately 400 people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9FFMA - A microfilm reader is a device used in projecting and magnifying images stored in microform to readable proportions. Microform includes flat film, microfilm, aperture cards, microfiche, and ultra fiche. Using open reels or cassettes, microfilm is often used as a way to store many documents in a small space. It has become increasingly prevalent in the development of films, as well as storage of archived newspapers. With the invention of microfilm, microfilm readers soon developed. With the increasing popularity of computers, microform has decreased in use. However, many library archives still remain in microform.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM99T9 - A transistor radio is a small portable radio receiver that uses transistor-based circuitry. Following their development in 1954, made possible by the invention of the transistor in 1947, they became the most popular electronic communication device in history, with billions manufactured during the 1960s and 1970s. Their pocket size sparked a change in popular music listening habits, allowing people to listen to music anywhere they went. Beginning in the 1980s, however, cheap AM transistor radios were superseded by devices with higher audio quality such as portable CD players, personal audio players, boomboxes, and (eventually) smartphones, some of which contain radios themselves

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR7 - On tapping or scanning their smartphone over the QR code or NFC tag to the right of the poster, a unique url will open in their phone's browser. If the campaign is mobile-platform enabled, this will lead straight to the advertiser's website or content
if not, they will be taken to a standard Clear Channel landing page. On a scroller or digital panel (where multiple advertisers are involved), on scanning or tapping, the consumer will be presented with a list of advertisers whose campaigns are mobile platform enabled for them to select from.
Near field communication (NFC) is a set of ideas and technologies that enable smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less. Each full NFC device can work in 3 modes: NFC target (acting like a credential), NFC initiator (as a reader) and NFC peer to peer. Most of the first business models like advertisement tags or other industrial applications have not been successful, always overtaken by another technology (3D barcodes, UHF tags, ...)
The main advantage of NFC is that NFC devices are often cloud connected. Connected credentials can be provisioned over the air unlike a standard card (Hotel or visitor applications). All connected NFC enabled smartphones can be provisioned with dedicated apps, which gives any application hundreds of millions of potential dedicated readers in opposition of the traditional dedicated infrastructure of ticket, access control or payment readers. All NFC peers can connect a third party NFC device with a server for any action or reconfiguration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJJN - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a £47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC2C - A new type of coin-box was introduced, the well-known Button A and Button B prepayment equipment, and for over 25 years its design remained unchanged despite various developments in the design of kiosks. It was usually installed in both automatic and central battery manual exchange areas. To make a call in automatic areas, users inserted the appropriate fee which prepared the circuit for dialling. In manual areas, callers were connected to the operator on insertion of the call fee and, in both cases, the caller then depressed Button A. This allowed the coins to be deposited into the cash box and the call to be transmitted. If a call could not be connected for some reason, or if there was no reply, Button B was depressed, the line was disconnected for five to seven seconds and all the coins were returned to the caller.
Although 6d (2p) and 1/- (5p) slots were available for other calls, the minimum fee necessary to make a local call at the time was 2d. The mechanism was originally designed to check the presence of two pennies by a weighing operation. It was set to a minimum and maximum acceptable weight for the coins as a safety margin, but as the fee was gradually increased to 3d and then 4d the safety margin became smaller and eventually unacceptable. A mechanical counter was considered too expensive as the modifications needed would have been too many and too complex. To overcome this problem a new mechanism was devised by Hall Telephone Accessories Ltd and was in effect a combination of the two basic methods: three pennies were checked by weight and the mechanism waited for the insertion of the fourth penny before allowing the call. The system required the smallest amount of additional equipment and could be easily fitted. A limitation was that it could not be easily adapted for an increase beyond 4d.
In 1959 the first versions of the new Pay-on-Answer payphones were being introduced and at the end of the 1950s began to supersede the 'Button A and B' models.

The observatory was established in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes at the observatory
the Mark II, and 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, are in the civil parish of Lower Withington and the Lovell Telescope and the observatory are in Goostrey civil parish, near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. The observatory is reached from the A535. The Crewe to Manchester Line passes right by the site, and Goostrey station is a short distance away. On 7 July 2019, the observatory became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHH95 - Taken on 24 Sep 2023, this photograph shows RFID Security protected supermarket alcohol wine product, England, Great Britain, UK, WA4 2SJ. The location is Great Britain, UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. The yellow security label turns an ordinary supermarket product into a clear image about retail theft, shrinkage, high-value goods, sensor technology and changing shop-floor controls. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include anti-theft, yellow, security protected, supermarket, shops, supermarkets, products, wine, alcohol, theft, security, sticker, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social hi.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTK73J - Poljot (literally meaning flight), is a brand of Soviet/Russian wristwatches, produced since 1964 by the First Moscow Watch Factory (Russian: Первый Московский Часовой Завод, ПМЧЗ, Perviy Moskovskiy Chasovoy Zavod). The flagship brand of the USSR's watch industry, Poljot produced numerous historical watches used in many important space missions, including the world's first space watch worn by Yuri Gagarin.
Founded in 1930 under orders from Joseph Stalin, the First State Watch Factory was the first large scale Soviet watch and mechanical movement manufacturer. Via its USA-based trading company Amtorg, the Soviet government bought the defunct Ansonia Clock Company of Brooklyn, New York in 1929, and the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company of Canton, Ohio. As part of the Soviet's first five-year plan, twenty-eight freight cars worth of machinery and parts were moved from the USA to Moscow

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDPYAW - A printed circuit board (PCB
also printed wiring board or PWB) is a medium used in electrical and electronic engineering to connect electronic components to one another in a controlled manner.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJEW - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 ,amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GG - In February 2022 new barcoded definitive design stamps were introduced. The rectangular (matrix) codes, unique to each stamp, use a trademarked coding designed to prevent counterfeiting and to enable tracking of letters, and to enable correspondents to link digital content to their stamps. Until 2022 any 1st and 2nd class and decimal currency postage stamps could be used
old Machin and country definitive design stamps without barcodes are no longer valid from 31st July 2023, with old ones exchangeable for barcoded ones indefinitely through a process which Royal Mail calls the Stamp Swap Out scheme. Special Stamps with pictures and Christmas Stamps without a barcode continued to be valid Stamps are exchanged like-for-like: a 1st class stamp will be replaced by a 1st class one, not 95p.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DCXB - Antique Roberts Shortwave, Mediumwave, Longwave radio dial has the strength of a real-world scene: ordinary enough to be believable, but specific enough to support precise editorial use. An antique Roberts radio dial evokes the era when shortwave, medium wave and long wave listening brought news, music, shipping forecasts and distant voices into the home through a single portable set. The object suits stories about broadcasting history, analogue design, domestic technology, nostalgia, radio collecting and the shift from tuning knobs to streaming platforms. The location wording gives the subject enough geographic context for local and regional editorial use while avoiding a generic studio feel. It can work both as a straightforward location record and as a wider editorial illustration of the habits, services, buildings, symbols and small commercial details that shape everyday life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGXX7 - BT Openreach telecoms engineer ,fixing fault, in green roadside cabinet box, Walsall, West Midlands, England, UK works as a grounded stock photograph because the subject is specific, legible and connected to wider social, economic or cultural themes. A BT Openreach engineer working at a green roadside cabinet shows the physical, skilled labour behind broadband and telephone services that are often talked about as invisible digital utilities. The subject is useful for coverage of fibre rollout, telecoms faults, digital exclusion, street works, infrastructure maintenance, home working and the dependence of households and businesses on reliable connectivity. The location detail, Walsall, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. The scene has practical value for features needing authentic British or international street-level evidence, especially where policy, culture, business, tourism or social change is easier to explain through one clear example.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H369J2 - An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator, or fully or intermittently autonomously, by onboard computers.
Here, an owner flies a medium sized drone over the river Mersey, close to Runcorn, Widnes, Fiddlers Ferry and the new toll crossing, which is under construction.
Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.
