Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY3 - The statue of Betty Campbell in Central Square, Cardiff, commemorates a pioneering Welsh educator, community leader and campaigner for equality in education. Born in Cardiff in 1934 to Jamaican parents, Betty Campbell grew up in the city at a time when Black communities in Wales were small, often marginalised, and largely absent from public narratives. She trained as a teacher and in 1974 became Wales's first Black headteacher, taking charge of Mount Stuart Primary School in Cardiff Bay, an area then facing economic decline and significant social change.
Campbell was a strong advocate for multicultural education long before it became embedded in national policy. She worked to ensure that Black history, cultural awareness and anti-racist education were included in the school curriculum, believing that children of all backgrounds should see themselves reflected in what they were taught. Beyond the classroom, she played an influential role in local and national initiatives, contributing to the development of Black History Month in Wales and advising on equality and community cohesion. Her work helped challenge institutional racism within education and broadened understanding of Welsh identity as diverse and multi-ethnic.
Unveiled in 2021, the bronze sculpture depicts Campbell rising from a tree-like form, with children gathered at the base, symbolising growth, learning and the lasting impact of education across generations. Situated in Cardiff's redeveloped Central Square, the statue represents a deliberate effort to recognise previously overlooked figures in Welsh public life. Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents contemporary civic memorialisation in Wales, illustrating themes of education, representation, social progress and the evolving understanding of national history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A448 - Richard Morris Titmuss CBE FBA (19071973) was a pioneering British social researcher and teacher. He founded the academic discipline of social administration (now largely known in universities as social policy) and held the founding chair in the subject at the London School of Economics.
His books and articles of the 1950s helped to define the characteristics of Britain's post World War II welfare state and of a universal welfare society, in ways that parallel the contributions of Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal in Sweden. He is honoured in the Richard Titmuss Chair in Social Policy at the LSE, which is currently held by Julian Le Grand.
Titmuss's association with eugenics extended beyond the British Eugenics Society, to encompass other personal and intellectual connections.
He is also honoured by the annual Richard Titmuss Memorial Lecture in the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
At the LSE, where he was the first professor of Social Administration, he transformed the teaching of social work and social workers and established Social Policy as an academic discipline. He also contributed to a number of government committees on the health service and social policy. He also did some consulting in Africa, sometimes together with Professor Brian Abel-Smith, who was later his successor in his chair.
His concerns focused especially on issues of social justice. His final and perhaps the most important book, The Gift Relationship expressed his own philosophy of altruism in social and health policy and, like much of his work, emphasized his preference for the values of public service over private or commercial forms of care. The book was influential and resulted in a study of the blood bank systems, specifically with regard to regulation on the private blood market exchange. President Nixon called for a complete study of the lack of coordination within the system only months following publication of Titmuss' findings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6W9 - Liverpool English (Scouse)
Introduction
The term scouse refers to Liverpool English. An inhabitant of Liverpool is a Liverpudlian or Scouse(r) The Scouse accent is well-know throughout Britain and the world mainly due to the Beatles and other Liverool pop groups and singers from the 60s. Nowadays, among some people it not considered to be among the nicest of English accents. Only the Birmingham accent is considered uglier. Scouse has a velarized or adenoidal quality that gives it a sound peculiar to this accent. Of course, for the people of Liverpool, Scouse is an integral part of their identity and well loved.
Vowels
Liverpool is a Northern accent and therefore the FOOT and STRUT words are both pronounced with a /ʊ/. One of the most distinguishable characteristics of Liverpool English is the SQUARE diphthong . Compare Liverpool /ɛː/ with RP /eə/. You can hear it when George Harrison pronounces the word declare in the song Taxman on the Revolver album. Words like book and cook are pronounced [buːk, kuːk] instead of the RP /bʊk, kʊk/.
Consonants
Sometimes initial /ð/ is pronounced as a [d̪] just like in some varieties of American English. Words like ring and bring are pronounced /ŋg/, that is, with a final /g/ sound. Some stops are pronounced like affricates. For example, dad /dzad/, king /kxɪŋg/. The /t/ in certain lexical items with a short preceding vowel such as matter, what, but, get may be realized as [ɾ]. Examples: Get a job! [geɾədʒɒb], what's the matter [wɒtsðəmæɾə], what a day [wɒɾədei]. This is generally limited to certain lexical items

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KAHRW4 - Betty Campbell MBE (6 November 1934 13 October 2017,born Rachel Elizabeth Johnson) was a Welsh community activist, who was Wales' first black head teacher. Born into a poor household in Butetown, she won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff. Campbell later trained as a teacher, eventually becoming head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She put into practice innovative ideas on the education of children and was actively involved in the community.
Betty Johnson became pregnant at the age of 17, while she was doing her A-levels. She left school when she married Rupert Campbell, a fitter's mate, in 1953. Betty Campbell had four children, one of whom had special needs. She had 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In 1960, when Campbell already had three children, she discovered that Cardiff Teacher Training College had started to enrol female students. Campbell applied, and was one of only six female students to be admitted.
Campbell's first teaching post was in Llanrumney. She soon returned to Butetown, getting a job at Mount Stuart Primary School, where she taught for 28 years. As a black teacher she experienced hostility from some parents: They hadn't seen a black teacher before. It was as if you could do a job, but if you're black you weren't quite as good.
Campbell was inspired by a trip to the US where she learned about anti-slavery activists like Harriet Tubman and the civil rights movement. When she became Wales' first black head teacher at Mount Stuart in the 1970s, she began teaching children about slavery, black history and the system of apartheid which operated at the time in South Africa.
Speaking later in the Senedd, Campbell explained: I was determined that I was going to become one of those people and enhance the black spirit, black culture as much as I could. Campbell helped to create Black History Month and taught a series of workshops on the role of Butetown's citizens

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JCC - Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street (Irish: Sláinte Leanaí Éireann ag Sráid an Teampaill) is a children's hospital located on Temple Street, Dublin, Ireland. It is a teaching hospital of University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin
The hospital was founded by Mrs. Ellen Woodlock and her close friend Sarah Atkinson at 9 Upper Buckingham Street in 1872. It had just 8 beds when it opened. In 1876, the growing success of the hospital prompted the governing committee to invite the Religious Sisters of Charity to take over the running of the hospital.
In May 1879 the lease at 9 Upper Buckingham Street expired and, with the help of a bequest, the sisters purchased the former home of the Earls of Bellomont at 15 Temple Street. Over the following years adjoining houses were purchased such as the residence of the Parnell family, number 14. The hospital expanded in the 1930s with help from the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake.
A new nurses' home and a new x-ray department was officially opened by Minister of Lands, Seán Flanagan, in the presence of the President of Ireland, Éamon de Valera, in 1972.
In line with other teaching hospitals, the facility changed its name from the Children's Hospital, Temple Street to the Children's University Hospital, Temple Street in the late 1990s and changed its name again to the Temple Street Children's University Hospital in 2012
The hospital changed its name from Temple Street Children's University Hospital to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street as part of the rebranding of three hospitals under the Children's Health Ireland banner on 1 January 2019

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8BP05 - Epictetus (Greek: Ἐπίκτητος, Epíktētos
c. 50 c. 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.
Epictetus taught that philosophy is a way of life and not simply a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control
we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.
