August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival.
The husband of Denise Scott, Australian commedian, promoting her show Regrets at the Assembly Hall, mound place, on stilts. It runs 2 - 26th August 6.30pm.
She was winner of the Festival Directors Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2011 as well as the winner of the Helpmann Award for best comedy 2011. Scotty has been quoted in the press as 'big-hearted, shamelessly entertaining' by The Age.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Well, the Sugababes, what is there not to like? In 2006, British Hit Singles &
Albums named the Sugababes as the most successful female act of the 21st century with six UK number one singles and eighteen UK top ten hits.
Their number one singles include such songs as 'Freak Like Me', 'Round Round', 'Hole in the Head', 'Push the Button' and 'About You Now'. They have also accumulated five UK top ten albums (four of which have gained at least platinum certification), including chart-toppers Taller in More Ways and Change. The Sugababes have been nominated for six Brit Awards, winning one for Best British Dance Act in 2003.
The second lineup was my favourite. Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and former Atomic Kitten member Heidi Range.
Having already started work on a second album with new member Range, the trio looked for a new record label, eventually signing to Island Records. Their first single on the new label, 'Freak like Me' scored the group their first UK number 1 single. Follow-up single 'Round Round' also debuted on top of the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 2 in Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Both singles were certified silver by the BPI.
On the back of the success of the singles, the group's second album, Angels with Dirty Faces, debuted at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was later certified triple platinum, selling almost a million copies in the UK alone. It is to date their highest-selling album. In the UK, the third single from the album, a ballad entitled 'Stronger', gained the girls their third consecutive top ten hit in their native country. The track was released as a double-A side with 'Angels with Dirty Faces' in the UK, the latter song chosen as the theme tune to The Powerpuff Girls Movie. A fourth single, the Sting-sampling 'Shape', made the top ten in the Netherlands and Ireland in early 2003.
Tattooing has been practiced for centuries in many cultures spread throughout the world. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally had facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Māori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos.
In Japan, tattoos are strongly associated with organized crime organizations known as the yakuza, particularly full body tattoos done the traditional Japanese way (Tebori). Many public Japanese bathhouses (sentō) and gymnasiums often openly ban those bearing large or graphic tattoos in an attempt to prevent Yakuza from entering. The Government of Meiji Japan had outlawed tattoos in the 19th century, a prohibition that stood for 70 years before being repealed in 1948.
In the United States many prisoners and criminal gangs use distinctive tattoos to indicate facts about their criminal behavior, prison sentences, and organizational affiliation. A tear tattoo, for example, can be symbolic of murder, with each tear representing the death of a friend. At the same time, members of the U.S. military have an equally well established and longstanding history of tattooing to indicate military units, battles, kills, etc., an association which remains widespread among older Americans. Tattooing is also common in the British Armed Forces.
Tattooing was also used by the Nazi regime in Nazi concentration camps to tag prisoners.
Insofar as this cultural or subcultural use of tattoos predates the widespread popularity of tattoos in the general population, tattoos are still associated with criminality. Tatoos on the face in the shape of teardrops are usually associated with how many people a person has murdered. Although the general acceptance of tattoos is on the rise in Western society, they still carry a heavy stigma among certain social groups. Tattoos are generally considered an important part of the culture of the Russian mafia.
The prevalence of women in the tattoo industry, along with larger numbers of women bearing tattoos, appears to be changing negative perceptions. A study of 'at-risk' (as defined by school absenteeism and truancy) adolescent girls showed a positive correlation between body-modification and negative feelings towards the body and self-esteem
however, also illustrating a strong motive for body-modification as the search for 'self and attempts to attain mastery and control over the body in an age of increasing alienation.
Conspicuous tattoos and other body modification can make gainful employment difficult in many fields.

This is a track I first heard on Tommy Vance's friday night rock show on BBC radio one. I rediscovered it many years later when a friend lent me 'Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus'. Spirit were a LA band from the late 1960's.
The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of Ed Cassidy (drums) and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in Jimmy James and the Blue Flames in 1966.
In 1968 they toured with support band Led Zeppelin, who were heavily influenced by Spirit. Led Zeppelin played an extended medley during their early 1969 shows that featured 'Fresh Garbage' among other songs, Jimmy Page's use of a theremin has been attributed to his seeing Randy California use one which he had mounted to his amplifier, and it is now widely accepted that Page lifted the descending guitar figure from Spirit's instrumental 'Taurus' for Led Zeppelin's signature tune 'Stairway To Heaven'.
Mr Skin, a track about pornography (or maybe just Ed Cassidy, drummer of Spirit) has a great saxaphone solo in it, worth a listen just for that.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Me and the Gang Of Four go way back to listening to the late great John Peel 10pm til midnight 1978. They were the thinking mans punk band, playing politically motivated rock &
dub, gloriously mixed up.
The Gang's debut single, 'Damaged Goods' backed with '(Love Like) Anthrax' and 'Armalite Rifle', was recorded in June 1978 and released on 10 December 1978, on Edinburgh's Fast Product label. I still have one in my loft.
It was produced by the Gang of Four and Bob Last and Tim Inman. It was a Number 1 indie chart hit and John Peel radio show favourite. This led to two Peel radio sessions, which, with their incendiary live performances, propelled the band to international attention and sold-out shows across Europe and North America. They were then signed by EMI records.
The group's debut single with this label, 'At Home He's a Tourist', charted in 1979. Invited to appear on top rated BBC music program Top of the Pops, the band walked off the show when the BBC told them that they must sing 'packets' instead of 'rubbers' as per the lyrics of the song, as the original was too subversive for this TV slot. The single was then banned by BBC Radio and TV, which lost the band support at EMI, who began to push another band, Duran Duran, instead. A later single, 'I Love a Man in a Uniform', was banned by the BBC during the Falklands War in 1982.
Fast forward 30 years &
Britain is again in the grip of coalition government &
flaccid opposition. The perfect time to re-emerge.
In January 2011, the band released a new album, Content, which was very well received. Andrew Perry, writing in Britain's Telegraph newspaper, gave it (21 January 2011) a 5-star rating and said that it was 'their best record since the Seventies', an opinion with which I agree.
Jon Pareles, awarding the album 4 stars in a New York Times review of 25 January 2011, declared that [the band] 'have reclaimed, with a vengeance, their old attack', Dan Wilcox of KCRW (17 January 2011) said [of Content]: 'Entertaining, scintillating and dangerous, the band has lost none of its explosive edge over the years.'
In his Pitchfork review of the album, January 26, 2011 Stuart Berman wrote 'If Gang of Four's 2005 reformation proved they could more than hold their own against the upstarts, then Content shows that their chief concerns – the financial and psychological toll of keeping up with the Joneses – resonate all the more loudly in an Internet-accelerated era where even those on the vanguard can feel behind the times, and where the lawless, anonymous nature of online exchange threatens to overwhelm our identities. It's thus fitting that the album's most exuberant moment – the muscular Motown stomp 'Who Am I?' – is used to soundtrack a modern-day anarchist's existential crisis: 'You can't steal when everything is free'.
'Content' was one of my fave 3 albums of that year, gave me better time-travel than a tardis!
