Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE46XY - The Plaza cinema opened its doors on December 14, 1929. The architects were William and Segar Owen. They would also go on to design The Regal in the town.
The exterior was described as being severe in character. There was a rough cast finish relieved by by a central entrance, leaded light windows, a wrought iron and glass canopy sheltering all doorways and an effective Won Lite electric sign on a high facade over the main entrance.
There was a mahogany paybox occupying a central position flanked by two doors leading to the auditorium. Two staircases took patrons to the balcony area.
The auditorium was decorated in blue and orange. Fibrous plastering and colouring was carried out by Warrington firm Winstanley and Company.
Stage lighting was supplied by Holophane. In the 1960s it became a bingo club until 2011.
In the operating box there were two Kalee 8 machines and British Talking Picture (BTP) sound system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRJ9RB - Central Pier is one of three piers in the town of Blackpool, England, and was built in 1868.
The pier is central in that it is located between the other two, but it was close to the site of the now-defunct Blackpool Central railway station about 550 yards south of Blackpool Tower. Since the coastline is very straight and flat, the pier simply extends at right angles to the sea front, roughly level with the promenade.
The success of the North Pier prompted the formation of the Blackpool South Jetty Company one year later in 1864. Impressed with the construction of Blackpool Pier (North Pier), the company hired the same contractor, Richard Laidlaw and Son of Glasgow for the project. This time, however, the company used the designs of Lieutenant-Colonel John Isaac Mawson rather than those of Eugenius Birch. When the pier was opened on 30 May 1868, it was 503 yards in length, 131 yards of which was a landing jetty for use at low tide. The first manager of the pier was Robert Bickerstaffe, coxswain of the first Blackpool lifeboat. Blackpool's lifeboat station is located next to Central Pier.
From the start, the new pier's emphasis was on fun rather than the genteel relaxation provided at North Pier. In the early days fun was provided mainly by dancing facilities, but in the 20th century, roller skating was introduced along with fairground rides and amusement machines. Steamboat excursions departed from the landing jetty as they did from North Pier. The dance halls became less popular after the Second World War and the facilities were adapted into a theatre, bars and amusement arcades by the 1970s

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AXKD3P - Owner of the Sam Smith's pub chain 'tried to ban smartphones and tablets' in his bars - and staff are told they can be fired if they let customers use them
Humphrey Smith , 73, may be about to ban phones and tablets from his pubs
Has already forbidden jukeboxes, slot machines and TVs from his establishments
Seems to be ban on phones at the New Inn in Stamford Bridge, North Yorkshire
To most punters these days, the idea of getting your phone out at the pub to check a message or email is, well, small beer.
But at one chain of alehouses, this sort of behaviour could soon be firmly off the table.
The notoriously secretive owner of the Samuel Smith's brewery ? Humphrey Smith ? has apparently told staff to actively discourage drinkers from using phones or tablet computers in his establishments, and may be about to ban the devices altogether.
The brewery owns 300 pubs across the country, and the 73-year-old is said to regularly turn up incognito to check up on staff. He has long forbidden jukeboxes, slot machines and even televisions ? and now, in his latest attempts to preserve the art of genial pub conversation, he is said to be turning his wrath on electronic devices
At the New Inn in Stamford Bridge, North Yorkshire, a ban already appeared to be in place.
When a Daily Mail reporter attempted to use a tablet computer, a member of staff informed him: ?You can't do work on your electronic devices in here because Mr Smith doesn't like it.'
A protest that it was only to check a few emails cut no ice ? with the employee explaining: ?Sorry, but Mr Smith does check up on us and we could lose our jobs if he was to find out.'
At the Victoria Hotel near the seafront in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, we were told the eccentric businessman had turned up incognito. Staff would not speak about what happened, but drinkers last week said Mr Smith had been horrified to hear people using mobile phones in the main lounge. The Angel is an unreformed survival from another age.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN31 - Royal Mail's talking postboxes are back for Christmas. Four postboxes have been spruced up in Christmas trim, with elves ready to respond once a letter or card is posted.
The elves say things like Call your mother, Eat more vegetables, If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back at you, The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains, and Send help.
The four postboxes are located in Greenwich, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, and will be in place for the entire festive season.
(According to Royal Mail, the postboxes respond to letters being posted with the sounds of elves hard at work, not fomenting a workers' revolution.)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9ATB - A tower viewer is a telescope or binoculars permanently mounted on a stalk. The device magnifies objects seen through its lenses, allowing users to see farther and more clearly than they could with the naked eye or with less powerful viewing devices. Tower viewers are typically metallic and most swivel horizontally and vertically (within given axes of rotation) to permit a range of view. The viewing machines are commonly placed in tourist destinations and scenic lookouts for the purpose of viewing attractions and events of interest
they are also used in residential, business, recreational and government locations for the purposes of surveillance and safety monitoring.
Two well-known manufacturers of tower viewers in the United States are Tower Optical Co., Inc. (founded in 1933) and SeeCoast Manufacturing Company, Inc. (founded in 1960). Both firms offer wheelchair-accessible viewer bases that provide easy access to the sighting mechanisms in compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Tower viewer manufacturers located abroad include Hi-Spy Viewing Machines, Inc. (established in 1991) in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PB6G53 - Virgin introduces talking train lavatories
Virgin Trains has turned to humour to tackle the vexed problem of blocked lavatories
In the heyday of British Rail, gentlemen were urged to lift the seat when using the lavatories,
Now rather more explicit instructions are being given to passengers on Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Trains services to the west midlands, north west England and Scotland.
After the lavatory door shuts passengers are greeted with a pre-recorded message.
It declares: Please don't flush nappies, sanitary towels, paper towels, gum, old phones, unpaid bills, junk mail, your ex's sweater, hopes, dreams or goldfish down this toilet.
Lavatories have already been adapted on the fleet of 20 Voyager trains and work is under way on its 56 tilting Pendolino trains.
At times there have been problems with lavatories being blocked by inappropriate items flushed down the bowl.
Passenger forums suggest that the issue of blocked lavatories is a major source of annoyance for the travelling public
This has prompted Virgin, which earlier this year was given an extension of its franchise on the West Coast Main Line, to act.
When lavatories get blocked it means trains have to be taken out of service, a spokesman said.
It is also a huge inconvenience to passengers especially on a long trip.
We wanted to do something which would grab people's attention and a talking toilet does get the message across.
They are being well received, but time will tell. We're trying to face a serious issue in a chummy, informal way.
The initiative was welcomed by Antony Smith, chief executive of the consumer watchdog, Passenger Focus.
It can be frustrating to find that toilets are out of order or blocked, so hopefully the announcements will help this happen less.
Anything that gets useful information across to passengers in a fun way is to be welcomed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF03J - A sculptural metal wall panel designed by young people from the Greater Shankill was installed on one of Northern Ireland's most famous peace walls today. Funded by the Arts Council led Re-imaging Communities programme, the large scale artwork was officially unveiled by Arts Minister Nelson McCausland.
The artwork, inspired by ideas presented by the local community, depicts a face, made up of dozens of smaller images themed around Belfast's industrial heritage. Created by artist Kevin Killen, ?The Face' has been installed on one of Belfast's most recognisable landmarks, the peace wall which divides the Shankill Road from the Falls Road at Cupar Way.
Arts Minister, Nelson McCausland said: This sculpture is a good example of how the arts have the power to transform a local area. Projects such as 'The Face' create a more welcoming atmosphere and help develop a community where people are proud to live. 'The Face' is part of the If Walls Could Talk programme which aims to create an outdoor art gallery of world-class art pieces and provide a canvas on which to express the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. Re-imaging art projects have been a key element in facilitating positive social change and I congratulate artist Kevin Killen and the participants from Impact Training and the Greater Shankill Alternatives for what they have achieved.
Artist Kevin Killen explained how the artwork was created: The Face relates to the themes of Belfast industries, working with the young adults in Impact Training, we designed and fabricated the artwork. Being a part of the project was rewarding and insightful to everyone involved. As the group was a part of the process from start to finish they have developed ownership of the artwork, which is an important benefit. I hope that the artwork gives pride to all the participants involved in the project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF04K - A sculptural metal wall panel designed by young people from the Greater Shankill was installed on one of Northern Ireland's most famous peace walls today.

It is several of the cultivated varieties of beet (Beta vulgaris) grown for their edible taproots and their greens. These varieties have been classified as B. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris Conditiva Group.
Other than as a food, its uses include food coloring and as a medicinal plant. Many beet products are made from other Beta vulgaris varieties, particularly sugar beet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXMHD - The parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a root vegetable closely related to the carrot and parsley. It is a biennial plant usually grown as an annual. Its long tuberous root has cream-colored skin and flesh and can be left in the ground when mature as it becomes sweeter in flavor after winter frosts. In its first growing season, the plant has a rosette of pinnate, mid-green leaves. If unharvested, it produces its flowering stem, topped by an umbel of small yellow flowers, in its second growing season. By this time the stem is woody and the tuber inedible. The seeds are pale brown, flat and winged.
The parsnip is native to Eurasia. It has been used as a vegetable since antiquity and was cultivated by the Romans, although there is some confusion in the literature of the time between parsnips and carrots. It was used as a sweetener before the arrival in Europe of cane sugar. It was introduced into the United States in the nineteenth century.
The parsnip is usually cooked but can also be eaten raw. It is high in vitamins and minerals, especially potassium. It also contains antioxidants and both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. It can be cultivated in deep, stone-free soils and is attacked by the carrot fly and other insect pests, viruses and fungal diseases, of which canker is the most serious. In sunlight, handling the stems and foliage can cause a skin rash.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJP10 - Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as giant hogweed, cartwheel-flower, giant cow parsnip,[4][5] hogsbane or giant cow parsley, is a plant in the family Apiaceae. In New Zealand, it is also sometimes called wild parsnip, or wild rhubarb. It typically grows to heights of 2 to 5.5 m (6 ft 7 in to 18 ft 1 in). Superficially, it resembles common hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Heracleum sosnowskyi, or garden angelica (Angelica archangelica). It is phototoxic and considered to be a noxious weed in many jurisdictions. Giant hogweed is native to the Caucasus region and Central Asia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, and it has also spread to many other parts of Europe, the United States, and Canada.
The sap of giant hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters and long-lasting scars. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05M - The illuminated marquee of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert outside the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway at West 53rd Street, 1697 Broadway, New York, NY 10019, photographed at night. The theatre has been the long-time home of CBS's flagship late-night programme and remains one of the most recognisable television venues in the United States.
In 2024, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude in 2026, citing the changing economics of late-night television, declining linear broadcast audiences and rising production costs across the US network TV industry. The decision formed part of a wider retrenchment affecting late-night programming, rather than a single-show controversy.
Stephen Colbert addressed the announcement directly on air, telling viewers that the decision was made by the network, not himself, and emphasising his gratitude to the show's staff, crew and audience. He described the programme as a collaborative achievement and thanked CBS for the opportunity to host the show for over a decade, framing the ending as an industry shift rather than a personal or political dispute.
Since taking over the Late Show in 2015, Colbert became known for blending comedy, satire and political commentary, particularly during periods of heightened political tension in the United States. The show's run at the Ed Sullivan Theater continued a broadcasting legacy stretching back to The Ed Sullivan Show, reinforcing the venue's cultural significance.
Photographed against the night-time streetscape of Midtown Manhattan, the image carries strong editorial value for themes including American television history, media industry change, late-night comedy, political satire, and the transformation of broadcast entertainment in the digital era.
