Shelled and badly damaged by the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War of the 17th century, the tower of that church had to be rebuilt in 1696, and the nave was rebuilt in l770.
The south aisle was added in the early 19th century, and the whole building was restored between 1859 and 1867, when the present distinctive spire was added. Inside, galleries in the aisles contain pews with doors, and some of the stained glass is by AWN Pugin.

As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea, and are subject to corrosion by seawater and colonisation by marine animals. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60WM - The Lammas Lands is an area of grassy floodplain meadows running alongside the River Wey in the centre of Godalming managed by the ranger service of Waverley Borough Council. The site is an important flood relief plain, open space and local amenity for the town of Godalming
The history of the site as flood meadows goes back to Norman times although over the years the area has been reduced in size by adjoining development and is now about 32ha. The hydrology of the site was changed by the construction of Hell Ditch as a relief channel during the fifteenth century, the Wey navigation channel in the eighteenth century and the construction of the railway in the nineteenth century. The site is a locally designated Site of Nature Conservation Importance for its plant communities and grassland flora, including Meadow Saxifrage, Black Knapweed and Meadow Barley. It is also important for its wetland invertebrates and birds. Part of the area is also categorised as an Area of High Archaeological Potential and designated as an Area of Strategic Visual Importance by Waverley Borough Council and the whole area is registered common land with public rights of access.
It is important that the meadows continue to be managed both as an uninterrupted
flood plain and for its landscape, amenity and wildlife. The Council are producing a management plan for the site to guide management over the next ten years.
Although not nationally designated the area has high local importance as a flood plain (reducing the risk of flooding to adjoining parts of the town) and for its biological and archaeological interest and landscape. It is also valuable amenity land, heavily used and much loved by the local community as an open space for walking, dog walking and nature study
For all the above interests, it is important that the site be retained as open grassland, as without management, it would speedily revert to scrub and woodland. The most sustainable and traditional management is by grazing

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX1FE - Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a decommissioned coal fired power station located in Warrington, Cheshire, England. Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and took water from the River Mersey. After privatisation in 1990, the station was operated by various companies, and from 2004 to 2022 by SSE Thermal. The power station closed on 31 March 2020. The site was acquired by Peel NRE in July 2022.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney, the station is a prominent local landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.
An application to build Fiddlers Ferry Power Station was proposed in 1962. It was built by the Cleveland Bridge Company between 1964 and 1971, and came into full operation in 1973
The station generated electricity using four 500 MW generating sets and consumed 195 million litres of water daily from the River Mersey
On 18 November 2015, Amber Rudd, the then Minister in charge of the Department of Energy & Climate Change, proposed that the UK's remaining coal-fired power stations will be shut by 2025 with their use restricted by 2023
In September 2022, site owner Peel NRE submitted its plans to Warrington Council for the demolition of the power station's four northern cooling towers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8NX - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

The idea was to find a new way for young people to engage with the town's history.
The group decided on a range of images including iconic structures such as the Golden Gates and the Barley Mow, famous faces like Jonathan Blackburne, the Lord of the Manor of Warrington famous for growing the north west's first pineapple at Orford Hall, and the Mad Hatter's tea party scene from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
Scenes illustrating the town's industrial heritage are also featured alongside a depiction of the ill-fated RMS Tayleur which was built in Warrington.
Will and the team spent 46 hours on the street art design over six days using 25 litres of emulsion and 100 spray cans.
The project has been around a year in the making with a workshop in February to gather ideas on how the mural should look.
Planning permission to paint the wall was approved at the end of September when Historic England raised no objections.

Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFEH - Arley Hall is a country house in the village of Arley, Cheshire, England, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Lymm and 5 miles (8 km) north of Northwich. It is home to the owner, Thomas Shelby OBE, MP and his family. The house is a Grade II* listed building, as is its adjacent chapel. Formal gardens to the southwest of the hall are also listed at Grade II* on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In the grounds are more listed buildings, a cruck barn being listed as Grade I, and the other buildings as Grade II. The hall was built for Rowland Egerton-Warburton between 1832 and 1845, to replace an earlier house on the site. Local architect George Latham designed the house in a style which has become known as Jacobethan, copying elements of Elizabethan architecture. A Gothic Revival chapel designed by Anthony Salvin was subsequently built next to the hall. By the mid-20th century parts of the house were in poor condition and were demolished, to be replaced by five private homes in a matching architectural style. The present gardens were created in the 1830s, and were developed during the 20th century. The garden's herbaceous border was one of the first of its type in Britain, and remains one of the finest. The house and its gardens have been open to the public since the 1960s, and have also been used as a film location. Stockley Farm, part of the Arley estate, is an additional visitor attraction for children and families

It's also good for the environment as you won't be burning any fossil fuels on your commute - the only fuel you'll need is your breakfast.
But how to start cycling to work? You don't need a complicated programme or a detailed plan to start cycling, just a bike and the willingness to give it a go.
If you haven't tried it before you've probably got some questions about how to begin, but with a little preparation and our bike commuting tips below you can enjoy a healthy, cheap start to the day.
Can I cycle that far?
A rough rule of thumb is that most people can cover about five miles in half an hour. It might take some time to build up to the distance you need to cover but in the meantime you're fitting physical activity into your daily routine instead of trying to find time to exercise after work.
If you've got a long way to travel why not put your bike in the car and just cycle the last bit? Chances are this will be the bit that involves traffic jams, frustration and idling engines. You might be surprised by how quickly you're ready to increase the distance too.
I don't feel confident cycling on busy roads
Get some cycle training if you think you need it, especially if you haven't cycled for a long time.
Look into routes that avoid busy roads. A common mistake is to assume that the only route to work is on the main road with all the rush-hour cars.
If anyone from your workplace already cycles your way ask them about the routes they take or even ask them to bike buddy with you.
My bike isn't in great condition
If you're not sure whether your bike is safe, find time to check it over. Take it to a local bike mechanic if you're still not certain.
If it's safe to ride, just give it a go. You can think about whether a better bike might make it even more enjoyable once you've decided to continue cycling

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG41A4 - The attractive Cheshire village of Grappenhall, near Warrington contains some interesting buildings and retains its characterful cobbled roads and village stocks. The name derives from the Old English words 'grop', 'grep', or 'grepe' (meaning ditch/drain), and halh (meaning flat land by a river). The village was first mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, referred to as 'Gropenhale' the land was described as having a wood with deer and was valued as being worth five shillings.
The village stands on the Bridgewater Canal, built for Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater by James Brindley and completed in 1772, it was once a busy commercial enterprise transporting coal from the mines in Worsley near Manchester to industries in Widnes, Runcorn and Northwich where the fuel was used in the production of chemicals. Nowadays the quiet towpath of the canal makes for a pleasant stroll.
A Norman church stood on the site of the Church of St. Wilfred although it was largely rebuilt in the sixteenth century. The earliest recorded rector of the church was in 1189. A small chapel was added to the church by the local Boydell family in 1334 and contains a commemorative window in their honour. Fragments of medieval glass have been preserved from the chapel which form the most extensive medieval stained glass in Cheshire. During nineteenth century building work a Saxon font of the local red sandstone was discovered at a depth of about three feet below floor level. The chancel contains an effigy of Sir William Boydell, who died in 1275. The reredos is carved in oak and is based on the painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.
The carving of a cat which adorns the west face of the church tower is said to have been the inspiration for the grinning Cheshire cat in Lewis Carrol's famous children's story 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Carrol was born in the nearby village of Daresbury. By the gate to the churchyard stand the two stone uprights of the village stocks

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5MA - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

It is located in the London Borough of Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. In June 2020, the Greater London Authority started a consultation on proposals to vacate City Hall and move to The Crystal, a GLA-owned property in Newham, at the end of 2021. The decision was confirmed on 3 November 2020 and the GLA vacated City Hall on 2 December 2021. The Southwark location is ultimately owned by the government of Kuwait.
History
City Hall was designed by Norman Foster and was constructed at a cost of ?43 million on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London. It opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created, and was leased rather than owned by the Greater London Authority. Despite its name, City Hall is not in and does not serve a city (according to UK law), often adding to the confusion of Greater London with the City of London, which has its headquarters at Guildhall. In June 2011, Mayor Boris Johnson announced that for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the building would be called London House
The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although the excess energy consumption caused by the exclusive use of glass (in a double facade) overwhelms the benefit of shape. Despite claiming the building demonstrates the potential for a sustainable, virtually non-polluting public building

In June 2020, the Greater London Authority started a consultation on proposals to vacate City Hall and move to The Crystal, a GLA-owned property in Newham, at the end of 2021. The decision was confirmed on 3 November 2020 and the GLA vacated City Hall on 2 December 2021. The Southwark location is ultimately owned by the government of Kuwait.
History
City Hall was designed by Norman Foster and was constructed at a cost of ?43 million on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London. It opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created, and was leased rather than owned by the Greater London Authority. Despite its name, City Hall is not in and does not serve a city (according to UK law), often adding to the confusion of Greater London with the City of London, which has its headquarters at Guildhall. In June 2011, Mayor Boris Johnson announced that for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the building would be called London House
The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although the excess energy consumption caused by the exclusive use of glass (in a double facade) overwhelms the benefit of shape. Despite claiming the building demonstrates the potential for a sustainable, virtually non-polluting public building
The building is located on the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark, as part of the extended pedestrianised South Bank. It forms part of a larger development called More London, including offices and shops. The nearest London Underground and National Rail station is London Bridge

She was the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806?1859), for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. While other ships had been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, the Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship. She was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, which she did in 1845, in the time of 14 days.
The ship is 322 ft (98 m) in length and has a 3,400-ton displacement. She was powered by two inclined 2 cylinder engines of the direct-acting type, with twin 88 in (220 cm) bore, 6-foot (1.8 m) stroke cylinders. She was also provided with secondary masts for sail power. The four decks provided accommodation for a crew of 120, plus 360 passengers who were provided with cabins, and dining and promenade saloons.
When launched in 1843, Great Britain was by far the largest vessel afloat. But her protracted construction time of six years (1839-1845) and high cost had left her owners in a difficult financial position, and they were forced out of business in 1846, having spent all their remaining funds refloating the ship after she ran aground at Dundrum Bay in County Down near Newcastle in what is now Northern Ireland, after a navigation error. In 1852 she was sold for salvage and repaired. Great Britain later carried thousands of immigrants to Australia from 1852 until being converted to all-sail in 1881. Three years later, she was retired to the Falkland Islands, where she was used as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk until she was scuttled and sunk in 1937, 98 years since being laid down at the start of her construction.

The present Early English Gothic chancel was built late in the 12th or early in the 13th century. The tower has a saddleback roof and may have been built in the 13th or 14th century. The present nave was built in 1793 and has a west gallery that was added in 1834.

Sunrise was a track from Lowlife, the third New Order album. Released in May 1985 by Factory Records, Low-Life is considered to be among New Order's strongest work, displaying the moment in which the band completed its transformation from post-punk hold-overs to dance rock pioneers. The album shows New Order's increased incorporation of synthesizers and samplers, while still preserving the rock aspects of their earlier work.
The album's artwork is the only New Order release to feature photographs of the band members on its cover. By default, drummer/keyboardist Stephen Morris is on the front cover, but it actually features four photographs inside the case and a semi-transparent piece of paper with the band's name on. Owners can choose which band member is seen through the sleeve.
The original Factory release (Japan and UK) CD versions of this album are mastered with pre-emphasis.
The album was preceded by the release of the full-length version of 'The Perfect Kiss' as a single (only an edited version appears on the album). John Robie's remix of 'Sub-culture' was also released as a 12' single. Both of these extended versions eventually were included on 1987's Substance.
Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a coal fired power station located in Cuerdley, Cheshire in North West England, which is capable of co-firing biomass. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington. Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy plc have operated the station.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines. rather than a sunrise, this is a sunset as locals will notice.

Waterloo Sunset is a song by British rock band The Kinks. It was released as a single in 1967, and featured on their album Something Else by The Kinks. Composed and produced by Kinks frontman Ray Davies, 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of the band's best known and most acclaimed songs. A London FM radio poll in 2004 named this the 'Greatest Song About London', while Time Out named it the 'Anthem of London'.
The lyrics describe a solitary narrator watching (or imagining) two lovers passing over a bridge, with the melancholic observer reflecting on the couple, the Thames, and Waterloo Station. The song was rumoured to have been inspired by the romance between two British celebrities of the time, actors Terence Stamp and Julie Christie. Ray Davies denied this in his autobiography, and claimed in a 2008 interview, 'It was a fantasy about my sister going off with her boyfriend to a new world and they were going to emigrate and go to another country.'
Despite its complex arrangement, the sessions for 'Waterloo Sunset' lasted a mere ten hours
Dave Davies later commented on the recording: 'We spent a lot of time trying to get a different guitar sound, to get a more unique feel for the record. In the end we used a tape-delay echo, but it sounded new because nobody had done it since the 1950s. I remember Steve Marriott of the Small Faces came up and asked me how we'd got that sound. We were almost trendy for a while.' The single was one of the group's biggest UK successes, reaching number two on Melody Maker's chart, and went on to become one of their most popular and best-known.
The record reached number 2 on the British charts in mid 1967 (it failed to dislodge the Tremeloes' 'Silence Is Golden' from the number 1 position). Davies considered the song a professional milestone, where he managed to blend the commercial demands of a hit single with his own highly personal style of narrative songwriting. The elaborate production was the first Kinks recording produced solely by Davies, without longtime producer Shel Talmy. In subsequent arguments with Kinks management over the direction of the band, Davies would say 'I've done 'Waterloo Sunset', now I want to do something else'.
In 2010 Ray Davies stated the song was originally entitled 'Liverpool Sunset'. In an interview with the Liverpool Echo he explained 'Liverpool is my favourite city, and the song was originally called Liverpool Sunset. I was inspired by Merseybeat. I'd fallen in love with Liverpool by that point. On every tour, that was the best reception. We played The Cavern, all those old places, and I couldn't get enough of it. I had a load of mates in bands up there, and that sound \u2013 not The Beatles but Merseybeat \u2013 that was unbelievable. It used to inspire me every time. So I wrote Liverpool Sunset. Later it got changed to Waterloo Sunset, but there's still that play on words with Waterloo. London was home, I'd grown up there, but I like to think I could be an adopted Scouser. My heart is definitely there.

The sap of Giant Hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters, long-lasting scars, and\u2014if it comes in contact with eyes\u2014blindness. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Le\u00f2dhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.

He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
In 563 he travelled to Scotland with twelve companions, where according to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula, near Southend. However, being still in sight of his native land he moved further north up the west coast of Scotland. In 563 he was granted land on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland which became the centre of his evangelising mission to the Picts.

This memorial is built at the site of the former Aignish Farm, the place of confrontation between the crofters and the landowners, to commemorate a phase of the highland land struggle.
The Aignish riot of 9 January 1888 was one of the most potentially disastrous confrontations of the period, especially running so soon after the Pairc deer raiders 'riot'. At the Aignish farm site a flag was unfurled to summon the people and an estimated 500 men had gathered in a short time, some with the intention of driving away all cattle and sheep from the farm.
Those animals which they did not succeed in driving into the sea they crippled by breaking their legs with clubs. Policemen and marines who arrived on the scene were pelted with stones and the raiders were only dispersed after being confronted at bayonet point by a detachment of the Royal Scots Regiment. The riot act was read out in English and Gaelic and by the end of the day 11 people were arrested and were imprisoned in nearby Stornoway. After the crowd had driven the sheep and cattle some distance they turned them back and past the farm
The iconic design reflects the idea of confrontation and takes the form of two stone structures of local stone approx 4.5 metres in height, each with a flat face from which jagged stones protrude. These pillars have curved backs and taper in towards the top. The jagged stones face each other, reflecting the aggression and tension of the event. In my opinion it is best seen at sunset or sunrise when, with a wind blowing you can hear the distant echo's of the crowd that day. It was a dark time for the Highlands and Islands and was to force more islanders to leave for ships west to the america.

Eddie Vedder (born Edward Louis Severson III 1964) is an American musician and singer-songwriter who currently serves as the lead vocalist and one of four guitarists for the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam. Vedder left the Southern California music scene and moved to Seattle, Washington in 1990 to join Pearl Jam where he rose to fame amid the grunge movement of the early 1990s. He is notable for his baritone vocal style, and widely considered a cultural icon of alternative rock.
He is also involved in soundtrack work and contributes to albums by other artists. In 2007, Vedder released his first solo album as a soundtrack for the film Into the Wild (2007). His second album, Ukulele Songs, along with a live DVD titled Water on the Road, was released on 31 May 2011.

Since the JST was established in 1978 over 36,000 people have sailed with us. Of these approximately 12,500 people were disabled and 4,500 wheelchair users.
A trip with the JST changes the lives of disabled people as they suddenly realise that, far from being unable to join in with everybody else, they can do everything. I've seen people come home from a voyage and seem five feet taller ? the experience has completely changed the way they see themselves.

Where church lane and Broad lane meet is a lovely spot for catching the last rays of sun before heading into the village for a quick pint before tea. Grappenhall on the edge of south Warrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale. It roughly translates to 'The Groping Place' as my cousin (who has a degree in such matters but also an uncharacteristically un-catholic sense of humour) once explained to me. At the time of the Domesday Grappenhall was stated to be worth five shillings. Lets hope that was just the tax revenue.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have resisted photographing the cat, although may relent if I can find a suitably creative way of doing it.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The 'large room' in Grappenhall village, was converted into a Police station for the filming of the 'Wisteria Lodge' episode of The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. The 'Rams Head' pub was converted to the 'The Bull Hotel' in the same episode (see www.flickr.com/photos/nathanchantrell/4010783429/in/photo... ).
Grappenhall has a thriving Cricket Club and is part of the CCC. Cheshire County Cricket Club is one of the county clubs which make up the Minor Counties in the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Cheshire and playing in the Minor Counties Championship and the MCCA Knockout Trophy. The club is based at Cheadle and plays matches around the county at Boughton Hall in Chester, Nantwich, New Brighton, Grappenhall and Alderley Edge.
Oh, and by-the-way, I have reached 300 in my 365 without missing a day so far - yay! (big thanks to Jill, who helped me decide to start, way back in June - Hanx!)

It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. Built in red sandstone,[2] its plan consists of a west tower, a six-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, and a chancel flanked by chapels to the north and south. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

It is the main link between North wales, M6 motorway (the first in Britain), Manchester City, Airport and the M60/M62 route east. It took thirteen years from first proposal in 1958 to starting the Manchester end of the motorway, then a further ten years for all junctions to Chester to be completed.
It has recently been populated with traffic information signs displaying occasionally useful information and 'fillers' such as 'Don't Hog The Middle Lane', 'Dont Drink And Drive', 'Say No To Drugs' and other subliminal messages. It is always unerving to see a yellow sign up ahead as the density of chemical plants between Lymm and Chester (Stanlow etc) makes it quite likely for chemical spillages etc on this section.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4475858832 - 'The Cantilever Ship Canal bridge (rightly called the Latchford High Level Bridge) B5157 connects Fairfield and Station Road in south Warrington. The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4469547119 - 'Fiddlers Ferry has been a landmark visable from Runcorn, Warrington and Widnes since the early 1970's. Its a coal fired power station on the banks of the Mersey River, which supplies all its cooling water. In recent years it has been adapted to also burn bio-mass. It can generate nearly 2,000 Megawatts.
Living in Glossop I remember massive freight trains of coal trucks coming over Woodhead and the Dinting viaduct headed for Fiddlers Ferry. Many trains overnighted at the sidings at Gamesley. Fuel for it these days comes mainly from Liverpool docks. Sulphur emissions are reduced by a new FGD plant installed in 2008. Carbon Dioxide is still pumped out of the chimneys as before though to be added to our delicate climate.
Its eight towers can be seen from various high points, including here at the cemetary at Pewtersspear, above Stockton Heath. A modern pub called the Eight Towers (not one of my usual haunts), is located only a short distance away.

Latchford is a suburban district and electoral ward of the unitary borough of Warrington, in Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.

Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs - The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head, Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. The village name appears in the title of the song Grappenhall Rag by Darwen singer/songwriter Bryn Haworth.

The Sisters of Mercy are an English goth rock band that formed in 1979. After achieving early underground fame in UK, the band had their commercial breakthrough in mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output as a strike against their record company. Currently, the band is a touring outfit only.
Their live performances featured many cover versions: among those, a medley consisting of 'Sister Ray' (by Velvet Underground), 'Ghostrider' (by Suicide) and 'Louie Louie' (by Richard Berry) became a live staple. Only three of them, The Stooges' '1969', The Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter' and Hot Chocolate's 'Emma' were eventually recorded and released on Sisters records (all as b-sides).
In late 1983, following this highly successful 'Temple of Love' single, the band signed a contract with major record label WEA.
The group has released three original studio albums, of which the last was released in 1990. Each album was recorded by a different line-up
singer and songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machines called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity among the line-ups. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members.
The group ceased recording activity in 1993, when they went on strike against their record company Time Warner, which they accused of withholding royalties and of incompetence. Although Time Warner eventually let the band go in 1997, they have not signed to another label, and have chosen not to use an independent label, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets.
This image was shot in a temple in late evening. The deep orange glow of the sun is made even warmer by the sienna coloured and textured walls. It reminded me of the final temple scene in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.
Willard is brought before Kurtz in the darkened temple, where Kurtz derides him as 'an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill'. Bound to a post, Willard watches helplessly as Kurtz drops Chef's severed head into his lap. After some time in captivity, Willard is released and given the freedom of the compound. Knowing that Willard would not leave, Kurtz lectures him on his theories of war, humanity, and civilization. As Kurtz explains his motives and philosophy while praising the ruthlessness and dedication of the Viet Cong, he asks Willard to tell his son everything about him in the event of his death.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NFR - Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by British artist Antony Gormley located at Crosby Beach in Merseyside, England. It consists of 100 cast iron figures facing towards the sea. The figures are modelled on the artist's own naked body.[1] The work proved controversial due to the naked statues but has increased tourism to the beach. After being exhibited at two other locations it was put on display at Crosby on 1 July 2005. After some controversy Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council decided on 7 March 2007 that the sculptures should be permanently installed at the beach
The work consists of cast iron figures which face out to sea, spread over a 2-mile (3.2 km) stretch of beach between Waterloo and Blundellsands. Each figure is 189 centimetres (6 ft 2 in) tall and weighs around 650 kilograms (1,430 lb). The figures are cast replicas of Gormley's own body. As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea, and are subject to corrosion by seawater and colonisation by marine animals. The figures were cast at Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax, West Yorkshire and the Joseph and Jesse Siddons Foundry in West Bromwich by foundryman Derek Alexander

Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a coal fired power station located in Cheshire in North West England, which is capable of co-firing biomass. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington.
Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy PLC have operated the station.
