Liverpool Central Low Level underground terminal station opened on 11 January 1892, at the end of the Mersey Railway's route, via the Mersey Railway Tunnel from Birkenhead, when the route was extended from James Street station. The Mersey Railway platforms were underground, accessed from stairs within the High Level station and situated in roughly the same position as the escalators accessing the Northern Line today.

RAF Burtonwood was opened in 1940 and was transferred to the US military in June 1942, during which time it became the largest air base in Europe during the Second World War.
In June 1948, and after the post-war division of Germany, the Soviet Union closed all the roads, railways and canals from Western-occupied Germany into Western-occupied Berlin.
The Western Allies responded with the Berlin Airlift between June 1948 and September 1949, supplying the people of West Berlin with all their needs in the biggest air lift in history.
RAF Burtonwood played a central and vital role in the success of the airlift, with every C-54 Skymaster involved in the Berlin Airlift being serviced at the base.
After the war and role in the Berlin Airlift, RAF Burtonwood became a major equipment storage and supply centre for the US in Europe before its eventual closure in 1993.
The two bespoke benches now in place at Airlift Hill were designed in collaboration with Aldon Ferguson, president of the RAF Burtonwood Association, funded by Omega Warrington and were installed next to Pickett-Hamilton Fort.

The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by James Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill. The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros. From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine

At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by James Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill. The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros. From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine

The pier is central in that it is located between the other two, but it was close to the site of the now-defunct Blackpool Central railway station about 550 yards south of Blackpool Tower. Since the coastline is very straight and flat, the pier simply extends at right angles to the sea front, roughly level with the promenade.
The success of the North Pier prompted the formation of the Blackpool South Jetty Company one year later in 1864. Impressed with the construction of Blackpool Pier (North Pier), the company hired the same contractor, Richard Laidlaw and Son of Glasgow for the project. This time, however, the company used the designs of Lieutenant-Colonel John Isaac Mawson rather than those of Eugenius Birch. When the pier was opened on 30 May 1868, it was 503 yards in length, 131 yards of which was a landing jetty for use at low tide. The first manager of the pier was Robert Bickerstaffe, coxswain of the first Blackpool lifeboat. Blackpool's lifeboat station is located next to Central Pier.
From the start, the new pier's emphasis was on fun rather than the genteel relaxation provided at North Pier. In the early days fun was provided mainly by dancing facilities, but in the 20th century, roller skating was introduced along with fairground rides and amusement machines. Steamboat excursions departed from the landing jetty as they did from North Pier. The dance halls became less popular after the Second World War and the facilities were adapted into a theatre, bars and amusement arcades by the 1970s

The Standard Corporation kept 30,000 £1 shares and offered £150,000 worth of shares to the public
initially only two-thirds were taken up, forcing the company to ask for more cash contributions from its existing shareholders, but the poor financial situation of the company, exacerbated by the falling share price, rendered it unable to pay. Bickerstaffe, to avoid the potential collapse of the venture, bought any available shares until his original holding of £500 amounted to £20,000. He also released the Standard Corporation from its share commitments. When the Tower opened in 1894, its success justified the investment of nearly £300,000, and the company made a £30,000 profit in 1896.

Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

It's one of the most intricate canal networks in the world. The hub of the BCN is the bustling city centre junction at Gas Street Basin. Here, colourful boats and historic canal architecture sit side-by-side with vibrant modern restaurants, cafes and bars. The basin is in the heart of Birmingham's cosmopolitan nightlife and shopping districts. The mainlines and city centre canals are busy with boaters, walkers and cyclists.
However, elsewhere on the BCN, you can really get away from it all on winding suburban canals and some surprisingly rural branches. In the northern waters of the BCN, there are some rarely-explored waterways that are truly off the beaten track.
The canals were the life-blood of Victorian Birmingham and the Black Country. At their height, they were so busy that gas lighting was installed beside the locks to permit round-the-clock operation. Boats were built without cabins for maximum carrying capacity, and a near-tidal effect was produced as swarms of narrowboats converged on the Black Country collieries at the same time every day

The church was built in 188283 for the brewer Sir Gilbert Greenall of Walton Hall. It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, the cost of its construction being £17,500 (equivalent to £1,880,000 in 2021)
The church is built in red snecked sandstone with Westmorland green slate roofs. Its plan is cruciform with a three-bay nave, north and south transepts, a two-bay chancel, a south vestry, and a south porch. The tower is in four stages with chequerwork in its third stage, a recessed octagonal spire and an octagonal north west stair turret. The porch consists of an oak frame on a 6 feet (2 m) sandstone plinth. The church is in Decorated style
The church was listed at Grade II* on 23 December 1983. Grade II* is the middle of the three gradings designated by English Heritage, and is given to particularly important buildings of more than special interest. Following the granting of a charter to hold markets in 1594, the lord of the manor at Over Lypiatt, John Throckmorton, decided to commission a market hall
the new building was designed in the neoclassical style and completed in 1596. The original design involved a symmetrical main frontage with four bays facing onto the Market Place
it was arcaded on the ground floor to allow markets to be held
an assembly room with a large oriel window was established on the first floor.
The building was first used for municipal purposes as a meeting place for the local vestry in the early 19th century. It was extended to a design by Francis Niblett to accommodate the county court in 1851 and, after becoming the offices of the local board of health, it was remodelled in the gothic style with a large gable containing mullion windows erected above the two central bays in 1856. In order to improve the stability of the building, large buttresses, flanking the two central bays, were installed on the front of the building in 1890. After significant population growth, partly associated with the number of dye works in the town, the area became an urban district with the town hall as its headquarters in 1894.
Following an increase in the responsibilities of the council, civic leaders acquired the former offices of the Gloucester Banking Company in the High Street in 1930
the High Street building was converted for municipal use and was subsequently referred to as the Council Chambers. Although most council officers and their departments moved to the new Council Chambers in the High Street, some departments, including the technical services department, remained in the old building. The old town hall remained in municipal use even after the enlarged Stroud District Council was formed

It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying. Intriguingly, although it looks as if the central slab of the portal should be supporting the pillars

At present there are seventy-odd stones of heavily weathered local oolitic limestone (see Geology) set in a rather irregular ring about 31m across. They were poetically described by William Stukeley as being corroded like worm eaten wood, by the harsh Jaws of Time
they were said to make a very noble, rustic, sight, and strike an odd terror upon the spectators, and admiration at the design of em. More recently, Aubrey Burl called them seventy-seven stones, stumps and lumps of leprous limestone.
The number of stones has changed over the years. Legends refer to stones having been taken away (to make bridges and the like), and it is likely that this created most of the gaps now visible. The stones are famously uncountable, but originally may have numbered about 105 standing shoulder to shoulder. At the time the Stones were first protected as an ancient monument (1883) the owner was reported to have replaced all the fallen stones in their original foundation. In fact the restoration was far from exact: most of the stones that are known to have been standing in their present positions since the 17th century show that it was originally built as an accurate circle.

On the 11.2.2016, a delegation representing the BMA (UK) visited the site of 28 Dean Street, situated in the Soho area of West London which is a five minute walk from Gerrard Street (in the heart of London's Chinatown), and a one minute walk from Soho Square Gardens. Karl Marx and his family lived in two houses on Dean Street firstly number 64 and then number 28. The room the Marx family occupied at 64 Dean Street is generally described as small being no bigger than a closet or store cupboard. By the time Marx moved into 28 Dean Street his family comprised of himself, his wife Jenny (who was pregnant), his housekeeper Lenchen, and their three children (Jennychen, Laura and Edgar). Their youngest son Henry Guido' Marx died in November 1850 whilst the family were still living at 64 Dean Street. The Marx family rented only a small area of 28 Dean Street consisting initially of just two rooms (Marx would later rent a third room for use as his study). In his Karl Marx A Biography (1995) the historian David McLellan describes the two rooms as being situated on the second floor of the building and comprising of a back small bedroom and a larger front room (measuring 15ft by 18ft) that had three windows looking out onto the street. He further states that the Marx family lived in this house from 1851 to 1856 (Page 240), but on photograph number 8 in his book (situated between pages 178 and 179) he states that the date of occupation was in fact between 1850 and 1856. Indeed, the plaque raised by the now defunct Greater London Council (GLC) is affixed between two windows on the second floor of the building and quotes the dates of occupation as 1851-1856' a date that McLellan states is not quite accurate' on his description of the photograph of 28 Dean Street.

It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building and possesses special architectural and historic interest within a national context. It was built in 1906 as an extension to Waterloo House and the existing library with a grant from Andrew Carnegie, and closed in 2012
In 1902, more library and reading room space was needed. The Runcorn Free Library Committee applied to Andrew Carnegie to fund the extension. Carnegie had provided grants for many other libraries in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Carnegie replied in 1903 that he had received an overwhelming number of applications. In 1904 Carnegie refused the grant as he believed the income of the Library Committee would not support larger premises. An amended application was made and Carnegie gifted £3,000 in November 1904 to erect a new public library stipulating that a site must also be given for the building. At a Runcorn Urban District Council meeting in June 1905 it was decided to carry out the plans for the library alteration and extension using the £3,000 gifted by Carnegie. An exterior wall of Waterloo House formed an interior wall of the extended library, both buildings housing the library
the lending department in Waterloo House, the reading rooms and reference department in the new building.
The Carnegie Library was also designed by James Wilding, surveyor and water engineer to the Runcorn Urban District Council

The cross dates from the early to mid-17th century and was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials. Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last.

Later the coal was imported.
Between 2006 and 2008 Fiddlers Ferry was fitted with Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to reduce the emissions of sulphur by 94%, meeting the European Large Combustion Plant Directive. In 2010, the station was being considered for the installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment. This would reduce the station's emissions of nitrogen oxides, to meet the requirements of the Industrial Emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive. The SCR technology would replace the Separated Over Fire Air (SOFA) technology which was used in the station. The SCR equipment was not fitted due to uncertainty over the future of the plant.

Ground storey has an inserted 12-pane window into a line of studs, a line of chevrons and at the top a pair of blocked 4-light wood mullioned windows. First storey has a C20 steel casement above the original sill. There is a line of quartrefoils, a line of chevron and 2 similar mullioned windows. Gable rebuilt in brick with black painted timbers and a small pane window. Panelling to the side is undecorated except for some chevron work. Inserted door and windows. Interior: Two rooms in each floor in old part. Main room has corner fireplace with moulded stone fireplace, damaged by insertion of brick and cast-iron grate. 2 corbels help carry exposed joists

The station was once part of the Caledonian Railway and later, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. It was originally opened by the Caledonian in September 1849, as the terminus of their branch line from Newton and was originally known simply as Hamilton.[2] The branch was then extended to Motherwell and also to Ferniegair (to join existing routes southwards to Strathaven & Coalburn) in December 1876 - a new Hamilton Central station serving the town was opened on this route at the same time, with the former terminus renamed Hamilton West and rebuilt for through traffic.
Services south of Haughhead Junction to Larkhall & Coalburn ended in October 1965 due to the Beeching Axe, but the line as far as Larkhall was reopened in 2005. The Hamilton Circle line was electrified by British Rail in 1974, as part of the wider scheme to electrify the northern end of the West Coast Main Line.

It contains a mansion, Tatton Hall, a medieval manor house, Tatton Old Hall, Tatton Park Gardens, a farm and a deer park of 2,000 acres (8.1 km2). It is a popular visitor attraction and hosts over a hundred events annually. The estate is owned by the National Trust, who administer it jointly with Cheshire East Council. Since 1999, it has hosted North West England's annual Royal Horticultural Society flower show.
There is evidence of human habitation in the area of the estate going back to the Iron Age. In medieval times the village of Tatton was on the site. This has since disappeared but the area of the village and its roadways are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. By the end of the 15th century the estate was owned by the Stanley family who built and occupied the Old Hall. By the 1580s this building had been enlarged and it was owned by the Brereton family. In 1598 the estate was bought by Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas and his children rarely visited the estate and it was loaned to tenants. At the end of the 17th century the estate was owned by John Egerton, Sir Thomas' grandson, who built a new house on the site of the present mansion, some 0.75 miles (1 km) to the west of the Old Hall. This mansion, Tatton Hall, was extensively altered and extended between 1780 and 1813. In 1795 the estate covered 251,000 acres (1,020 km2) (392 sq.miles). The estate remained in the ownership of the Egerton family until the last Lord Egerton died without issue in 1958. He left the house to the National Trust and gave them the park in lieu of death duties. However, as the estate itself was sold by his executors, Cheshire County Council committed to a 99-year lease in place of an endowment to ensure that it was preserved for the benefit of the nation. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed.
From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's.
The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup.
There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.
In 1992, the club were in their last season in Manchester Association before a move to the CCCL

However, it has been given unofficial, colloquial titles such as the Balls of the Falls, the Testes on the Westes and the Westicles. These names have been derived by both the sculptures location on Broadway Junction (located above the A12 Westlink and in close proximity to the Falls Road) and in reference to its shape made from two, spherical, metal structures.
The RISE sculpture was designed by Wolfgang Buttress and consists of a geodesic sphere suspended inside a larger, 30 m (98 ft) diameter sphere and stands at an overall height of 37.5 m (123 ft). Geodesic refers to the shortest path between two points on a curve so that in the case of the RISE sculpture, adjacent connections on each of the spheres are connected using straight bars, thereby minimising the distance between two points. At 30m wide and 37.5m tall, RISE is the biggest public art sculpture in Belfast.
RISE was commissioned by Belfast City Council and built in 2011 as part of a multimillion-pound road improvement programme. It now sits atop of the A12 Westlink Underpass (a grade-separated junction) where, according to a 2009 NI assembly report, sees approximately 80,000 cars on average flow past it each day.

The globe-shaped, white and silver steel sculpture is a representation of a new sun rising to celebrate a new chapter in the history of Belfast. The inner sphere represents the sun rising over the bogs and the outer sphere represents the sun's halo, while the angled, steel supports are to represent the reeds of the bog meadows that extended more widely across the area before it was developed. It was renovated in 1864 after a fire, a year before the Grecian Chambers was completed. Such was the demand for office pace that an additional layer was added to the top of the building in 1907

The new architect, James Hoey Craigie, made some effort was made to match the original design with elongated Greek columns holding up the baroque restaurant extension, although the twin domes at either side seem odd and out of place. Water lilies do not have surface leaves during winter, and therefore the gases in the rhizome lacunae access equilibrium with the gases of the sediment water. Growing The Sutton:
As with all rhubarb, deep, rich soil with good drainage is important. Rhubarb roots grow deep so good preparation pays dividends - dig in plenty of well rotted manure and/or compost before planting. If rhubarb crowns get too damp in winter, they will rot and die, so if there is any doubt over drainage mound the rhubarb bed so the crowns are above ground level. Never cover them with mulch.
The ideal soil for rhubarb is neutral to slightly acidic
it will tolerate quite acidic soil, but yields will be smaller. Chalk or limestone soils are less suitable and need more improvement.
Spacing: The Sutton rhubarb is a big plant so increase spacing a bit and plant about 110 cms apart in a sunny position as rhubarb hates the shade.

Garden care:Rhubarb crowns (or sets) are sent out in a packet containing a little compost, but are generally considered as bare root'. They will just look like a section of root, but as soon as they arrive they should be unpacked and planted out within a few days. Potted rhubarb can be planted out at any time of the year provided the ground is not frozen.
Rhubarb needs an open, sunny spot with fertile, moist but freely-draining soil. Heavy soils should be avoided as overly-wet conditions in winter may rot the crowns. Rhubarb does need a cold period before it will start to put on new growth in spring, however hard frosts may damage the newly emerging growth, so try not to plant in a frost pocket if you can. Prepare the bed well by removing weeds and digging in composted manure, and plant the crowns at intervals of 75cm - 1m, making sure the dormant buds are just below the surface of the soil. Keep well watered and in spring apply a dressing of composted manure, making sure you avoid covering the crown of the plant. Sulphate of ammonia can be applied in summer. It is important that the stalks are not harvested in their first year as this will adversely affect the plants vigour, but cut any old, yellow leaves off after they have faded and remove all the leaves after they have died back in autumn. You should also remove any flowering stalks which appear. In the second year, you may start to harvest some of the stems, but restrict yourself to between a third and a half of the total crop, leaving the rest to mature on the plant. In subsequent years, stems can be harvested from late spring up until mid to late summer.

Though the word beehive is commonly used to describe the nest of any bee colony, scientific and professional literature distinguishes nest from hive. Nest is used to discuss colonies which house themselves in natural or artificial cavities or are hanging and exposed. Hive is used to describe an artificial, man-made structure to house a honey bee nest. Several species of Apis live in colonies, but for honey production the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) are the main species kept in hives.
The beehive's internal structure is a densely packed group of hexagonal prismatic cells made of beeswax, called a honeycomb. The bees use the cells to store food (honey and pollen) and to house the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae).
Beehives serve several purposes: production of honey, pollination of nearby crops, housing supply bees for apitherapy treatment, and to try to mitigate the effects of colony collapse disorder. In America, hives are commonly transported so that bees can pollinate crops in other areas. A number of patents have been issued for beehive designs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYJ18 - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed. From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.

The trees almost match the colour of the olive vinyl on Overkill, the Motorhead album from which this comes. I remember the sunny afternoon I bought it from 'Peak Radio' in the high street in Glossop, Derbyshire.
Bronze Records signed the band in 1978 and gave them time in Wessex Studios in London to record Richard Berry's 'Louie Louie' and a new song by the band, 'Tear Ya Down'. The band toured to promote their single 'Louie Louie' while Chiswick released the Mot\u00f6rhead album in white vinyl, to keep the momentum going. Sales of the single brought the band their first appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, which gave Bronze the confidence to get the band back into the studio to record a second album.
The first release from those sessions was the single release of 'Overkill' backed with 'Too Late, Too Late' in 7' and 12' pressings. The Chiswick album 'Mot\u00f6rhead' had been a hasty affair as was its production, although it had a sub-bootleg quality which may be appealing, Overkill had more spring and bounce, and a thundering title track that would become a show-stopper for years to come. Three weeks after the initial release of the album in black vinyl, the album was released in a limited edition of 15,000 in green vinyl.
In June 1979 'No Class' was lifted from the album as a follow-up single, backed with a previously unreleased song, 'Like a Nightmare'. With a view to increasing the sales, the single was released in three different covers, one each of Lemmy, Clarke and Taylor.
The Paris metro has a uniform architecture influenced by Art Nouveau. Paris has one of the densest metro networks in the world, with 245 stations within 86.9 km2 (34 sq mi) of the city of Paris. Lines are numbered 1 to 14, with two minor lines, 3bis and 7bis. The minor lines were originally part of lines 3 and 7 but became independent.
The M\u00e9tro's original art nouveau entrances are iconic symbols of Paris, and 83 survive. Designed by Hector Guimard in a style that caused some surprise and controversy in 1900, there are two main variants:
The most elaborate feature glass canopies. Three still exist, at Porte Dauphine, Abbesses, and at the intersection of Rue des Halles and Rue Sainte-Opportune.
The rest have a cast-iron balustrade decorated in plant-like motifs, accompanied by a 'M\u00e9tropolitain' sign supported by two orange globes atop ornate cast-iron supports in the form of plant stems.
Several of the iconic Guimard entrances have been given to other cities. The only original one on a metro station outside Paris is the one at Square-Victoria station in Montreal, as a monument to the collaboration of RATP engineers. Replicas cast from the original molds have been given to the Lisbon Metro (Picoas station)
the Mexico City Metro (Metro Bellas Artes, with a 'Metro' sign), offered as a gift in return for a Huichol mural currently displayed at Palais Royal \u2013 Mus\u00e9e du Louvre station
and Chicago Metra (Van Buren Street, at South Michigan Avenue and East Van Buren Street, with a 'Metra' sign), given in 2001. Also, there is an entrance on display at the Sculpture Garden in Downtown Washington D.C. This does not actually lead to an actual D.C. metro station, it is just for pleasure.

Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its occupants, the Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London, England.
Its name, which is derived from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement, the New Palace that stands today. The palace is owned by the monarch in right of the Crown and for ceremonial purposes, retains its original status as a royal residence. The building is managed by committees appointed by both houses, which report to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker.
The first royal palace was built on the site in the 11th century, and Westminster was the primary residence of the Kings of England until fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there since the 13th century, and also as the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Widnes, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the diocese of Liverpool.
History
The tower dates from the 14th century and the rest of the church from 175859, replacing an earlier church on the site. Restorations were carried out in 1874, when a northwest vestry was added, and 1903. In October 1977, the church was the victim of an arson attack, leaving only the walls and the tower still standing. As a result of the fire there is nothing remaining of the restorations other than the vestry walls. Following the fire, the foundations of a narrower, timber-framed church were discovered. The roof and interior of the church were replaced by the architects Buxeby and Evans in 197980.
St Mary's is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan is a rectangle in five bays with a west tower, a northwest vestry, a northeast gabled projecting chapel, and a south porch. The tower is square with corner buttresses and a crenellated parapet. It has a west door with a window above it. At the bell stage are two-light louvred belfry windows on all sides. The windows on each side of the body of the church are round-headed. The east window is Venetian in style, glazed in large squares, with a cherub carved in the keystone.
The roof, dating from 197980, is in varnished chestnut. It is panelled in five compartments, and heavily
moulded. The west organ gallery, standing on Tuscan columns, is a replica of that destroyed in the fire. The furniture has been acquired from a variety of sources. The font, which consists of a bowl carved with cherubs, dates from the 18th century and spent a century in a garden. The oak pulpit dating from the 17th century stands on Tuscan columns

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BK4F7C - Quarry Bank Mill (also known as Styal Mill) in Styal, Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. Built in 1784, the mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and inspired the 2013 television series The Mill. It was established by Samuel Greg. The mill was notable for the innovative approach to labour relations, largely as a result of the work of Greg's wife, Hannah Lightbody.
Samuel Greg leased land at Quarrell Hole on Pownall Fee from Lord Stamford, who imposed a condition that 'none of the surrounding trees should be pruned, felled or lopped´
maintaining the woodland character of the area. The factory was built in 1784 by Greg to spin cotton. When Greg retired in 1832 it was the largest such business in the United Kingdom. The water-powered Georgian mill still produces cotton calico. The Gregs were careful and pragmatic, paternalistic millowners, and the mill was expanded and changed throughout its history. When Greg's son, Robert Hyde Greg, took over the business, he introduced weaving. Samuel Greg died in 1834.

Details here from the warband website. Arthur Pendragon, Druid Priest and Swordbearer, was brought up in Aldershot He served with the Royal Hampshire Regiment, receiving Exemplary Conduct upon discharge. He is qualified for Mensa, and is a well known public speaker at many of our Universities.
He was employed as a political columnist for The Esher News and Mail and has written for the Western Daily Press and co-authored a book about his exploits and that of his Order in challenging Her Majesty's Government and the authorities over Stonehenge and many other environmental issues.
He left school at fifteen and has had a varied career, including working as General Foreman for a Parish Council and Senior Supervisor for Hampshire and Surrey County Councils on the Basingstoke Canal restoration project, and at one time was he was a General Forman for a major management contractor, running a \u00a36 million and a \u00a39 million contracts.
Well known in Salisbury as an environmental campaigner and political activist, who is not afraid to put himself in the front line, he was arrested along with a Labour MP and a Member of the Scottish Parliament as well as Catholic Priests, Church of Scotland Ministers and members of the Scottish Nationalist Party, campaigning for nuclear disarmament. He was also arrested on another occasion showing solidarity with the workers on the March for Social Justice.
I met him across from Stonehenge where he was collecting signatures to repatriate druid remains removed from the site. They may have been the founders of the site and should be returned.
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 2 miles west of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Archaeologists had believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology below. One recent theory, however, has suggested that the first stones were not erected until 2400-2200 BC, whilst another suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC (see phase 1 below). The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate burials from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Burials continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years
In the 12th century, Geoffrey of Monmouth included a fanciful story in his work Historia Regum Britanniae that attributed the monument's construction to Merlin. Geoffrey's story spread widely, appearing in more and less elaborate form in adaptations of his work such as Wace's Norman French Roman de Brut, Layamon's Middle English Brut, and the Welsh Brut y Brenhinedd. According to Geoffrey, Merlin directed its removal from Ireland, where it had been constructed on Mount Killaraus by Giants, who brought the stones from Africa. After it had been rebuilt near Amesbury, Geoffrey further narrates how first Ambrosius Aurelianus, then Uther Pendragon, and finally Constantine III, were buried inside the ring of stones. In many places in his Historia Regum Britanniae Geoffrey mixes British legend and his own imagination
it is intriguing that he connects Ambrosius Aurelianus with this prehistoric monument as there is place-name evidence to connect Ambrosius with nearby Amesbury.
According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, the rocks of Stonehenge were healing rocks, called the Giant's dance, which giants brought from Africa to Ireland for their healing properties. Aurelius Ambrosias (5th century), wishing to erect a memorial to the 3,000 nobles, who had died in battle with the Saxons and were buried at Salisbury, chose Stonehenge (at Merlin's advice) to be their monument. So the King sent Merlin, Uther Pendragon (Arthur's father), and 15,000 knights to Ireland to retrieve the rocks. They slew 7,000 Irish but, as the knights tried to move the rocks with ropes and force, they failed. Then Merlin, using 'gear' and skill, easily dismantled the stones and sent them over to Britain, where Stonehenge was dedicated. Shortly after, Aurelius died and was buried within the Stonehenge monument, or 'The Giants' Ring of Stonehenge'.
In another legend of Saxons and Britons, in 472 the invading king Hengist invited Brythonic warriors to a feast, but treacherously ordered his men to draw their weapons from concealment and fall upon the guests, killing 420 of them. Hengist erected the stone monument\u2014Stonehenge\u2014on the site to show his remorse for the deed.
So it is a site brimming with history and legend. One that King Arthur Pendragon is hoping to preserve for the future. I added my donation and headed north.

Earlier spanish fruit is generally on sale, this is very forced and to my taste not as favourful as the native fruit in season.
Strawberry is a genus of plants (Fragaria) in the family Rosaceae. Traditionally, part of the british strawberry's appeal is that its short, six-week season which co-ordinates with the brief, long-awaited British summer. These days, however, the British strawberry season extends from mid-April until mid-December, thanks to the increased use of forcing via plastic polytunnels.
These provide the berries with a warmer, more protected environment - and a much longer growing season, while managing to blight a lot of our local landscape. Regretably, just one variety of strawberry, Elsanta, accounts for 80 per cent of the British fruit sold in UK supermarket. Many other varieties are available from farmers' markets and pick-your-own farms and if you have a real interest in the food you eat, search a little harder to discover them. Your taste buds will thank you!
If you buy them chilled, let them warm up before eating. Try stirring them into melted chocolate or mashed up with meringues and whipped cream to form 'Eton Mess'. I had some of this only last night and it reminded me how brilliant those often over looked summer deserts actually are.
Back in my days working in Higher Openshaw, east Manchester I was close to the Robertsons jam factory in Droylesden. This was built in 1891, and closed in 2008, demolished in 2010. Reject strawberry jam was prized by the workers, due to its over abundence of fruit. A few of my friends had relatives working there and if they could get hold of a few jars, the more the better!
