Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR17BK - A close-up image of a Coca Cola Zero Sugar advertisement in Dublin, Ireland, defaced with handwritten black graffiti reading Free Palestine. The political message has been painted directly over the brand's red advertising panel, partially obscuring the original corporate marketing text and imagery.
The graffiti reflects wider international protests and expressions of solidarity related to the ongoing Israel?Palestine conflict, which has prompted demonstrations, street messaging, and political statements across cities worldwide. In this case, the use of a globally recognised consumer brand as a backdrop highlights the intersection between political activism, corporate visibility, and public urban space.
Such defacement of advertising hoardings is a long-established form of protest, allowing individuals to insert political commentary into highly visible commercial environments. The image documents contemporary street-level political expression in Ireland, capturing how global geopolitical issues are reflected in local urban landscapes.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating political protest, street graffiti, public responses to international conflict, urban activism, and the use of corporate advertising spaces as platforms for political messaging.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GK - The Amstrad CPC (short for Colour Personal Computer) is a series of 8-bit home computers produced by Amstrad between 1984 and 1990. It was designed to compete in the mid-1980s home computer market dominated by the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum, where it successfully established itself primarily in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the German-speaking parts of Europe.
The series spawned a total of six distinct models: The CPC464, CPC664, and CPC6128 were highly successful competitors in the European home computer market. The later 464plus and 6128plus, intended to prolong the system's lifecycle with hardware updates, were considerably less successful, as was the attempt to repackage the plus hardware into a game console as the GX4000.
The CPC models' hardware is based on the Zilog Z80A CPU, complemented with either 64 or 128 KB of RAM. Their computer-in-a-keyboard design prominently features an integrated storage device, either a compact cassette deck or 3-inch floppy disk drive. The main units were only sold bundled with either a colour, green-screen or monochrome monitor that doubles as the main unit's power supply. Additionally, a wide range of first and third-party hardware extensions such as external disk drives, printers, and memory extensions, was available.
The CPC series was pitched against other home computers primarily used to play video games and enjoyed a strong supply of game software. The comparatively low price for a complete computer system with dedicated monitor, its high-resolution monochrome text and graphic capabilities and the possibility to run CP/M software also rendered the system attractive for business users, which was reflected by a wide selection of application software.
During its lifetime, the CPC series sold approximately three million units

Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 1854?1944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for ?4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for ?1 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM368 - Rock (often known by its place of origin, for instance Blackpool rock or Brighton rock) is a type of hard stick-shaped boiled sugar confectionery most usually flavoured with peppermint or spearmint. It is commonly sold at tourist (usually seaside) resorts in the United Kingdom (such as Brighton, Southend-on-Sea, Scarborough, Llandudno or Blackpool) and Ireland (e.g. Bray and Strandhill)
in Gibraltar
in Denmark in towns such as L??kken and Ebeltoft
and in Sydney and Tasmania, Australia.
It usually takes the form of a cylindrical stick (a stick of rock), normally 1?2.5 cm (0.39?0.98 in) in diameter and 20?25 cm (7.9?9.8 in) long. Blackpool rock is usually at least 2.5 cm (0.98 in) in diameter, and can be as thick as 17 cm (6.7 in) across and up to 2 m (6.6 ft) long when made for special retail displays. These cylinders usually have a pattern embedded throughout the length, which is often the name of the resort where the rock is sold, so that the name can be read on both ends of the stick (reversed at one end) and remains legible even after pieces are bitten off. Rock is also manufactured as a promotional item, for example with a company name running through it.
It is sometimes found in the form of individual sweets, with writing or a pattern in the centre
these are, in effect, slices of rock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PJ - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

The monument was first carved by Kerry Morrison and installed in Granby Row in 1992. Granby Row is the site of the factory where the first batch of Vimto was made by John Noel Nichols back in 1908.
After 19 years of the Manchester weather and attention from city revellers, the monument was in need of a refresh and it has been brought back to its former glory by Nick Lumb at Acorn Furniture in Wrexham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DC8D - Sugar is the generalized name for sweet, short-chain, soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used in food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources.
Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose (also known as dextrose), fructose and galactose. The table or granulated sugar most customarily used as food is sucrose, a disaccharide. (In the body, sucrose hydrolyses into fructose and glucose.) Other disaccharides include maltose and lactose. Longer chains of sugars are called oligosaccharides.
Chemically-different substances may also have a sweet taste, but are not classified as sugars. Some are used as lower-calorie food substitutes for sugar described as artificial sweeteners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ETJ - A mince pie is a small British fruit-based mincemeat sweet pie traditionally served during the Christmas season. Its ingredients are traceable to the 13th century, when returning European crusaders brought with them Middle Eastern recipes containing meats, fruits and spices.
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic idolatry and during the English Civil War was frowned on by the Puritan authorities. Nevertheless, the tradition of eating Christmas pie in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced markedly from the large oblong shape once observed. Today the mince pie remains a popular seasonal treat enjoyed by many across the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTK - This image shows traditional sweet shop weighing scales positioned in front of shelves packed with hundreds of old-style British sweet jars, creating a vivid display of classic confectionery retail. The glass jars, typically used for penny sweets and loose confectionery, evoke memories of independent sweet shops that were once common on British high streets.
The scene reflects a pre-digital retail experience, where sweets were weighed by hand using mechanical or analogue scales, rather than pre-packaged for self-service. Such displays are strongly associated with childhood nostalgia, heritage shopping, and the enduring appeal of traditional British confectionery.
The image is well suited for editorial and commercial use illustrating nostalgia, retail heritage, food culture, British high street history, and consumer traditions, as well as themes around craft retail, independent shops, and retro design

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKRA - The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and the docking complex and warehouses also com

Fingerprintz were a criminally neglected 1980's pop band from Scotland. I will be very surprised if any of my commenters recognise this gem. Cmon people, prove me wrong, particularly those north of the border.
While enjoying a jammy Bakewell tart in Sugar Junction, Tib Street Manchester, I found this perfect excuse to dig out this ipod track. Cheers Freddie, top cafe and wow, custard too. How much better can life get?
Get yourself over there if in the city, the only place for a vintage tea party.
Fingerprintz were vocalist Jimme O'Neill and guitarist Cha Burns who got together in London's late 70's new wave music scene. O'Neill wrote songs for Paul Young and Lene Lovich, while Burns played guitar in Adam Ant's backing band during 1982-1984 together with Fingerprintz drummer Bogdan Wiczling. O'Neill, who, in the mid 1970s, had worked for a time as a clerical assistant in the Department of Health and Social Security, released a single for Oval Records in 1975, 'Achin' in My Heart'/'Cold on Me', under the name Jimme Shelter (a throwback to the song, 'Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones).
Fingerprintz, released three albums The Very Dab, Distinguishing Marks and Beat Noir. They earned some critical recognition and notable appearances on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show and the BBC's In Concert radio series. The group split in 1985.
They re-emerged in 1988 as 'The Silencers'. They toured Europe with 'The Alarm'. The single 'Painted Moon' became a radio hit in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4390424101 - 'The day before Shrove Tuesday is known as Collop Monday. I dont suppose many people know that. It was named after the traditional dish of the day: collops of bacon served with eggs. (A collop is chunk or slice of meat or fat). In addition to providing meat, the collops were also the source of the fat for the following day's pancakes.
Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. It is traditional on this day to eat pancakes. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.
Of course we now just call this day 'pancake tuesday' now and Asda sells us maple syrup, half a dozen ready made pancakes and JIF lemon in a plastic lemon shape for the pretty resonable price of \u00a32.55
Having the baggage of a catholic education, I know that the following day I should really be in church, as it is ash wednesday.
The pancake above is a home made one, which was eaten with sugar and a squirt of real lemon about 1 minute after thi simage was taken. Yum Yum.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4328233789 - 'The biggest jar of these I have ever seen that you can buy without being accompained by an adult. It has been slowley being dipped into by people in the office now for about two months.
However the lack of an official 'Jelly Belly' trademark or logo on this jar (or indeed Mr jelly Belly as mascot) leads me to believe that these are in fact imposter beans (possibly come by way of ebay and Hong Kong). Let the buyer beware.
If you are new to this type of candy, concept is that there are about 50 flavours and a few specials. These can be mixed together in the mouth to replicate the experience of a cocktail. EG Coconut and Watermelon.
Ronald Reagan was a big fan of them apparently and had a jar of them on his desk in the White House and on Air Force One next to the big red button labelled 'Nuke'. Through perserverance he also made them the first jelly beans in outer space, sending them on the 1983 Challenger shuttle for the astronauts. You would have thought Mars and Milky Way bars would be most appropriate. The jelly beans were proven at low gravity, hence got the gig.
In recent years the high sugar content of the original beans has been offset by the introduction of a range of 'Sport' and 'Extreme Sport' beans. These contain vitamines, electrolytes(?) and the latter caffeine. All safe for our vege' breatheren and 100% Kosher.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252E - It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is based on a recipe that is several hundred years old that originates from the Swedish west coast, and in particular from Lysekil. The product is mainly made of salted cod roe (gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. In French, this type of caviar is sometimes referred to as caviar de Lysekil. Other manufacturers of similar caviar are ??hnbergs Kaviar (often regarded as the connoisseur's alternative, and currently also owned by Abba Seafood) and Boviks kaviar.
Kalles Kaviar has been a commercial success in Sweden ever since its market launch there in 1954. It is internationally recognized as a Swedish product, since many IKEA furniture stores worldwide feature this product in their food markets.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The tube design is well-recognized in Sweden and in Finland.
The product is also featured prominently in one of Ylvis's musical numbers from their Stories In Norway series on NorgeTV.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M9F1T7 - Kalles Kaviar (known as Kallen M??titahna in Finland) is a Swedish brand of sm??rg?skaviar.
It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is mainly made of salted cod roe (Gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. It is officially credited as having been introduced in 1954, but probably existed even earlier as advertisment for the product appeared in newspapers as early as 1950. The product soon became considered a classic product in the Swedish market, internationally recognised as a Swedish product.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of the then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The name Kalle was used because it was a popular name in the 1950s when it was first created.
The tube had to be made of aluminium rather than plastic because kaviar cannot stay fresh when in contact with air, and plastic tubes become filled with air when the contents have been squeezed out, whereas aluminium remains in the form it was pressed into.
In 2011, IKEA replaced Kalles Kaviar with its own brand of caviar. This led to backlash, leading to IKEA returning the product to its shelves within a few years

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNF - a special treat for Easter - classic Swedish dammsugare. The name means vaccum cleaners, and that's a very strange name for a cookie indeed. The reason? Well, traditionally these are made with lime-green marzipan and chocolate dipped ends, and maybe there was an early vaccum cleaner model that looked like that..? I really don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer out there, so it'll have to remain a mystery.
And it has many names, dammsugare just happens to be most widely used one. Punschrulle is also quite common, getting it's name from the liqueur used to flavor the filling. Punsch, as I've written before, is made from arrak and very sweet. If you can't find it, try using something like Amaretto or Frangelico instead - won't be the same, but it'll be really good.
