It all started when it was realised that Victoria Primary School in Newhaven on the northern outskirts of Edinburgh needed to expand and the decision was taken to build a new school.
Now we're almost three years down the line and the dream of converting the site containing the Victorian building into a brand new intergenerational centre for the whole community to enjoy, is nearing completion.
We've consulted with the community to find out what they want.
We've set up a SCIO, The Heart of Newhaven Community SCIO SCO49919 a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Constitution is here.
We have a board of trustees. We have members who will take the decisions moving into the future. See your board and consultants here.
We've passed the Community Asset Transfer test with Edinburgh City Council and been given permission to purchase the site. The Scottish Land fund have given us the Funds to buy the building.
NEWHAVEN IS A COMMUNITY WITH A HEART
Pulsating with energy is Victoria Primary School, full of children who in 2022 moved across Lindsay Road to a new site to pursue dreams for the future.
This iconic building and its annexe deserve be an asset for the whole community of Newhaven ?young and old, long-time residents and those newly moved here: everybody who wants to have a place to enjoy activities that can't yet find a space in Newhaven.
Newhaven has a distinct identity.
Its rapidly increasing population and range of activities is crying out for a focal point to express our sense of community life, especially to help those in greatest need of care and well-being.
The Heart of Newhaven was chosen as a name for the proposed centre, and the campaign to keep this building for the community, because:
it is in the centre of 'Greater Newhaven' (old and new combined)
because a community space for everyone is what keeps the community heart in Newhaven for the future.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PCB3G1 - The Warrington bombings were two separate bomb attacks that happened during early 1993 in Warrington, England. The first attack happened on 26 February, when a bomb exploded at a gas storage facility. It caused extensive damage but no injuries. While fleeing the scene, the bombers shot and injured a police officer and two of them were then caught after a high-speed car chase. The second attack happened on 20 March, when two small bombs exploded in litter bins outside shops and businesses on Bridge Street. Two children were killed and dozens of people were injured. Although a warning or warnings had been sent, the area was not evacuated in time.
The attacks were carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and it has been claimed that members of Red Action were also involved
Shortly before midday on 20 March 1993, The Samaritans in Liverpool received a bomb warning by telephone. According to police, the caller said only that a bomb had been planted outside a Boots shop. Merseyside Police sent officers to branches of Boots in Liverpool and warned the Cheshire Constabulary, who patrolled nearby Warrington. About 30 minutes later, at about 12:25, two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington, about 100 yards (91 m) apart. The blasts happened within a minute of each other. One exploded outside Boots and McDonald's, and one outside the Argos catalogue store. The area was crowded with shoppers. Witnesses said that the first explosion drove panicking shoppers into the path of the next blast just seconds later. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast-iron litter bins, causing large amounts of shrapnel. The tower is structurally independent of the adjacent shopping centre, with a simple foundation onto sandstone. Originally it was built as a chimney of the heating system of the shopping centre [1].The foundation is 60 feet in diameter, 17 feet deep and begins 40 feet below Houghton Street. It has a tapering shaft that was built using slip-formed concrete. The crows nest structure at the top was then added after the shaft was formed.
The original restaurant closed in 1979 for health and safety issues. It was re-opened, with a reduced capacity and additional fire prevention measures, during the early 1980s. The restaurant was eventually re-fitted as a Buck Rogers space-themed restaurant in 1983, but closed again due to lack of business. After this the observation deck and the restaurant remained closed.

Klaus M??rtens was a doctor in the German Army during World War II. After he injured his ankle in 1945, he found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. When the war ended and some Germans recovered valuables from their own cities, M??rtens looted leather from a cobbler's shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with air-cushioned soles
M??rtens did not have much success selling his shoes until he met up with an old university friend, Herbert Funck, a Luxembourger, in Munich in 1947. Regeneration
In June 2018, developers Capital & Centric announced the new site will consist of a film studio complex and adjacent soundstages to become a new base of Twickenham Studios. Slated to become 'Hollywood of The North', the studios will be named Littlewoods Studios as an homage to the building in which the studios will be housed. It was revealed in August 2019 that work transforming the site into two sound stages and offices was due to start towards the end of the year with the facilities finished towards the end of 2021.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority agreed to contribute ?11 million to the project in July 2020. The project intends to have a pop-up studio built on the neighbouring land and ready by the end of 2020, with development of the rest of the project following afterwards.

Two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington about 100 yards apart on 20 March at about 12:25. The blasts happened within a minute of each other with the area crowded with shoppers on the Saturday before Mothering Sunday. Witnesses spoke of shoppers fleeing from the first explosion into the path of the second. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast iron bins causing large amounts of shrapnel. It was a very personal attack on the people of Warrington - and the town needed to respond to it.
The City council asked to meet with me to discuss what form a memorial could take. It became clear that there were contrasting schools of thought with some looking to put it firmly in the past particularly as at the time the economic viability of the town was being threatened, and others who could imagine what I worried as being an overly personal memorial, which may not easily stand the test of time.
My feeling was that the street was not just physically broken but spiritually

The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
CONCEPT
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHG7C - The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
CONCEPT
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4KYM - Around ten Walsall College students and apprentices will be offered the unique chance to put their stamp on the new Walsall Business and Sports Hub (WBSH) scheme. It follows an agreement made between the College and Interserve Construction (part of the international support services and construction group Interserve), which is leading on the development. There is also an opportunity for at least 20 students to get involved in work placements in the wider Interserve operation including business administration and project-based work experience.
Students will start their placements with Interserve by January and they will see both traditional and modern construction techniques whilst working closely alongside project and support staff as well as learning valuable employability skills.
Construction work, which started at the end of August, remains on schedule ahead of the official opening in September 2015. Heavy goods vehicles are expected to make the first delivery of steelwork this week as the new build begins to take shape.
The state-of-the-art development, adjacent to Walsall College's main ?64 million Wisemore Campus on Littleton Street West, will include a business incubation centre for start-up businesses, sports hall with badminton courts to Sport England standards, dance and fitness studios, sports training and injury clinic and a fine dining restaurant. It forms part of Walsall Council's long-term ?400 million Gigaport initiative, which is creating business and office development along the ring road corridor.

its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK on 25 March 2013, followed in two stages by the northern arm of ITV Studios: the second stage involved Coronation Street being moved to a new production facility on Trafford Wharf next to the Imperial War Museum North at the end of 2013. The Studios on Broadway houses seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK tram stop on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of the Broadway Link Road.

There are representatives of almost every country on earth in Glasgow - and most have left their mark.
A walk across Jamaica Street bridge reveals one of the most striking and dramatic images.
Painted on a black wall on Clyde Street is a massive piece of graffiti art depicting a tiger, commissioned in 2010 to mark the Chinese Year of the Tiger.
The tiger is shown chasing a large ball of string and the mural is wrapped round three walls so it can be seen folded in on itself.
But it wasn't the city's Chinese community that commissioned the piece - it was the idea of the Singapore-based Tiger Beer company.
A plaque on the wall beside the tiger explains the reasoning behind what was called the Tiger Lucky Eight project.
It says: Tiger Beer has commissioned a unique series of collaborations curated by Josef Valentine across the UK to celebrate 2010 the Year of the Tiger. Five of these represent the elements of the Chinese zodiac: Water, Earth, Wood, Fire and Metal.
This mural, depicting Fire, was designed and produced by McFaul Studio, whose creative director John McFaul's family hail from the city of Glasgow.
The mural is close to the South Portland Street suspension bridge and strikingly visible from the south bank of the river.
It took the McFaul workers three days to complete the project and a time-lapse Youtube video shows the work from beginning to end in two minutes, 20 seconds.
The end result is an epic, psychedelic, fiery piece of work.
The Lucky Eight project also saw murals being completed in Birmingham, Brighton, London and Manchester

This is an old shot that I spotted while trying to dig something else out that an old friend had reminded me of. One of my most favourite portraits I have ever taken of a friend who I was on a degree course with. She now lives in Turkish Cyprus and teaches information technology (IT) at the university there.
The statue looks very bronze, although it was actually plaster. The fireplace was original, in the house situated behind where the old bus depot was in Fallowfield, on the edge of Moss Side, Manchester UK. Alexander Avenue used to terminate at the bus depot, google maps shows the depot intact, although it has now been flattened.

Imperial Point was the first of the high-rise residential buildings on the Quays: a 16-storey tower built alongside the Lowry Outlet Mall on Pier 8 (Central Wharf) in 2001. Finished in sand-coloured cladding with grey and steel finishes to the roof, service cores and balconies, the lower levels are integrated into the mall.
Sovereign Point is the sister building of Imperial Point, towards the rear of the Lowry Outlet Mall. Completed in 2005, its 20 stories are residential, except for some commercial units at ground level, including Sovereign Food and Wine, the Quays' first grocery store. The tower's design was controversial and regarded as having a poor aesthetic on all but the water-facing elevation and is in stark relief to the neighbouring low-rise Winnipeg Quay.
The NV Buildings were designed by Broadway Maylan and completed between 2004 and 2005. The development consists of three 18-storey residential towers, each 180 feet (55 m) in height. Costing ?36 million, they stand in a line overlooking Huron Basin from the waterside of Pier 9 (North Wharf), their curved frontages are designed to represent sails. At night, the buildings are illuminated by green lights atop curved poles, and green flood light to either side. The Type 3 apartment in the NV Buildings won gold for Best Apartment in 2004 What House? awards.
The City Lofts construction began in 2005 and completed in late 2007. The development consists of two linked towers: one 9 stories, the other 19 stories. They are on land adjacent to the bund carrying the Quays road, which separates the Manchester Ship Canal from the cleaned water of the Salford Quays basins. The Battle of Rorke's Drift was a battle in the Anglo-Zulu War. The defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift immediately followed the British Army's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana earlier that morning on 22 January 1879, and continued to the following day, 23 January. One hundred and thirty-nine British soldiers successfully defended their garrison against an intense assault by four to five thousand Zulu warriors. The overwhelming Zulu attack on Rorke's Drift came very close to defeating the tiny British garrison, and the British success is held as one of history's finest defences.[3] Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours.

Klaus M??rtens was a doctor in the German Army during World War II. After he injured his ankle in 1945, he found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. When the war ended and some Germans recovered valuables from their own cities, M??rtens looted leather from a cobbler's shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with air-cushioned soles
M??rtens did not have much success selling his shoes until he met up with an old university friend, Herbert Funck, a Luxembourger, in Munich in 1947. Funck was intrigued by the new shoe design, and the two went into business that year in Seeshaupt, Germany, using discarded rubber shaped by moulds. The comfortable soles were a big hit with housewives, with 80% of sales in the first decade to women over the age of 40
Sales had grown so much by 1952 that they opened a factory in Munich. In 1959, the company had grown large enough that M??rtens and Funck looked at marketing the footwear internationally. Almost immediately, British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group bought patent rights to manufacture the shoes in the United Kingdom. Griggs anglicised the name to Dr. Martens

The division is also responsible for ITV's production facilities The London Studios, 3SixtyMedia (based at ITV Granada, and co-owned with BBC Studios and Post Production), and location hire company ProVision (based at ITV Yorkshire, with sales offices at ITV Granada and The London Studios). ITV Studios Global Entertainment (formerly Granada International and Granada Ventures) is responsible for sales of finished programmes, formats and commercial licensing deals.
Programmes on non-ITV channels (except S4C, which has always used the name ITV Cymru) retained the Granada brand (examples are Channel 4's Countdown, and The Royle Family for the BBC) until 2009. Many of the programmes shown on ITV network show the end-board featuring the ITV Studios logo after the credits as of 2009. ITV, in full Independent Television, in the United Kingdom, television network consisting of a consortium of private companies in competition with the British Broadcasting Corporation. It is regulated by the Office of Communications.
