In 2018, after a pay agreement was not clearly explained to the membership, the Chief Executive and General Secretary Janet Davies resigned and Dame Donna Kinnair was appointed in an acting capacity. She was confirmed in the role in April 2019. A motion of no confidence in the RCN Council was called shortly afterwards and passed in September 2018 with 78% of votes, but on a turnout when only 3.7% of the membership voted. As well as the Chief Executive and General Secretary, the Director of Member Relations had previously resigned. Twelve of the 17 council members resigned, 10 of them standing for re-election in the subsequent election.
In 2019, the RCN's first strike limited to Northern Ireland, over staffing and pay issuestook place
In 2022, the RCN held a strike ballot over pay, held separately across NHS trusts and boards. Its members went on strike as part of the 20222023 National Health Service strikes. The RCN commented that from 2010 (the start of the government's austerity programme) to 2022, pay for nurses had fallen by 20%

It is the largest trade union in Northern Ireland, with around 46,000 members, and is organised into two groups, the Civil Service Group, for the staff of public bodies employed on civil service terms and conditions, and the Public Officers Group, for employees of education and library boards, health and social services boards, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, district councils, other public bodies and voluntary organisations.
Its current General Secretary is Carmel Gates, and President Brian Smyth.
In the wake of the First World War and Partition of Ireland, the Northern Ireland Civil Service was organised out of the remnants of the Dublin Castle administration. The Unionist Government set up six Ministries (Finance, Home Affairs, Education, Agriculture, Commerce and Labour) and a Prime Minister's Office. It essentially mirrored the set-up in Great Britain, with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance becoming the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
The earliest incarnation of what was to become NIPSA was the Belfast and District Public Officers' Association (BDPOA), but it was short-lived, down to its own success, when it opened a Derry branch and became the Ulster Public Officers' Association. Its first General Secretary was John Walters
The NICSA, AECS and Civil Service Association merged in 1971 to become NIPSA, with Brendan Harkin as its first General Secretary.

The term has been used[when?] in the United Kingdom in the context of workers who may find it difficult to buy property in the area where they work. The term was also used by the UK government during announcements regarding school shutdowns invoked in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to indicate parents whose occupations entitled them to continue sending their children to schools which were otherwise shut down by government policy, as well as teachers and LSAs at those schools.
A key worker is a public sector or private sector employee who is considered to provide an essential service.
Key workers jobs that cannot be done remotely:-
Energy. Many of the jobs in this field, which includes mining and oil extraction, cannot be done remotely.
First responders. These are the people communities depend on in emergencies, such as paramedics, firefighters and police.
Education and child care. Making sure children can grow academically even during a pandemic means vaccinating teachers, their support staff, and daycare employees.
Agriculture and food production. Many of the outbreaks at the onset of the pandemic were in meatpacking facilities and other food-processing plants.
Critical retail. (i.e. grocery stores, hardware stores, auto mechanics etc.). Keeping supermarket employees safe makes it possible for others to stay fed while restaurants are temporarily shut down.
Critical trades. (i.e. construction workers, electricians, plumbers, etc.)
Manufacturing. These jobs (producing goods) cannot be done remotely.
Corrections workers. Prisons are the types of closed facilities where the coronavirus can spread quickly.
Postal Service workers. This group makes sure vital packages get delivered, along with providing other key services.
Public transit workers.

Often, this is done in an attempt to dissuade others from going in (crossing the picket line), but it can also be done to draw public attention to a cause. Picketers normally endeavor to be non-violent. It can have a number of aims, but is generally to put pressure on the party targeted to meet particular demands or cease operations. This pressure is achieved by harming the business through loss of customers and negative publicity, or by discouraging or preventing workers or customers from entering the site and thereby preventing the business from operating normally.
Picketing is a common tactic used by trade unions during strikes, who will try to prevent dissident members of the union, members of other unions and non-unionised workers from working. Those who cross the picket line and work despite the strike are known pejoratively as scabs.
In the UK mass picketing was made illegal under the Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act 1927, moved by the leaders of what would soon be National Labour, after the 1926 General Strike. Otherwise picketing was banned by the Liberal-tabled Criminal Law Amendment Act 1871 but is decriminalised by the Conservative-tabled Conspiracy and Protection of Property Act 1875. The Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 gives protection, under civil law, for pickets who are acting in connection with an industrial dispute at or near their workplace who are using their picketing peacefully to obtain or communicate information or persuading any person to work or abstain from working. However, many employers seek specific injunctions to limit the effect of picketing by their door if they can evidence a high likelihood of intimidation or, in general, on non-peaceful behaviour and/or any that significant numbers of the picketers are or will in all likelihood be non-workers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB63 - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

The station is located on the West Coast Main Line about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London. The station is served by Avanti West Coast intercity services, and by West Midlands Trains regional services.
This is the principal station for the city, one of seven serving the Milton Keynes urban area. Milton Keynes Central, which opened on 17 May 1982, is by far the busiest and most important of these, as well as being the largest in terms of platforms in use, having overtaken Bletchley when platforms 2A and 6 became operational.
Milton Keynes Central has a total of seven platforms. Platforms 1 and 3 are the south and northbound slow platforms, while 4 and 6 are the south and northbound fast platforms. Platforms 2 and 5 are reversible, being slow and fast respectively. Platform 2 is used mainly by terminating stopping services from London Euston, whilst platforms 1 and 3 are used by West Midlands Trains services between Euston and Northampton, Birmingham New Street or Crewe. Platforms 4, 5 and 6 are used by Avanti West Coast inter-city express services between London and the West Midlands, north Wales, the north-west or Scotland.
Platform 2A is a five-car south-facing bay platform, originally intended for the extension of Marston Vale Line services from Bedford into Milton Keynes Central this proposal no longer appears in plans for East West Rail, being replaced by a planned service to/from Oxford or Aylesbury (see below). Meanwhile, platform 2A is used only by exception when additional platform capacity is needed, such as when there is a service delay. To the north of the station the six lines reduce to four (two slow and two fast) and there is a mile of five-track running to the south before this also reduces back to four.

The City Line services operate on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and the Liverpool to Wigan Line using a mix of AC electric and diesel trains.
The Merseyrail third rail network has 68 stations, 66 of which are managed by the company,[a] and 120.7 km (75.0 miles) of routes,[1] of which 6.5 miles (10.5 km) are underground. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the network carried 31 million passengers per year.
The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The full 1970s plans for the network were not realised, but the network has been extended on its peripheries with additional peripheral extensions proposed. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.
Merseyrail is operated for Merseytravel by 50:50 joint venture Serco-Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The 25-year contract expires in 2028, with the aspiration of the Liverpool City Region government being to bring the network and its infrastructure under local public ownership. In March 2017, the Department for Transport announced that Arriva, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, and incumbent Stagecoach had been shortlisted to bid for the next East Midlands franchise. Abellio was added in February 2018.
FirstGroup and Trenitalia pulled out of the bidding process in April 2018 to focus on the West Coast Partnership franchise. In April 2019 the franchise was awarded to Abellio, with East Midlands Railway (EMR) to take over the franchise from East Midlands Trains (EMT) on 18 August 2019 for a period of eight years.
In June 2019, Abellio revealed branding and colour scheme using distinct purple and white colours to reflect the heritage of the East Midlands. It also confirmed it would divide the services into three segments:

Postal workers at Royal Mail are poised to stage a fresh wave of strikes after Easter as talks stalled, amid a scandalous threat by bosses to put the company into administration.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents about 115,000 postal workers, is close to agreeing multiple strike dates to take place later in April, the Guardian understands, in the long-running dispute between the company and union. A formal announcement of the strike dates is expected this week.
Relations between Royal Mail executives and its workforce have been strained during the months-long dispute over pay and working practices. Class 231 units have four passenger vehicles, along with a separate Power Pack vehicle at the centre of the unit that contains four diesel generator sets. The diesel generators comply with EU Stage V emissions regulations. All vehicles are linked by unpowered Jacobs bogies, while the outermost bogie at each end of each unit carries the traction motors

An anonymous campaigner says residents of the saucily-named street have become a 'laughing stock', with children who live there bullied and teased at school.
A statement accompanying the change.org petition, entitled Bell End Road Name Change, says: As you may be aware, the term Bell End can be seen and used as a rude and/or a offensive word.
As well as this, it can affect people and children including children being bullied and teased at school and generally now become a laughing stock as seen very recently on Facebook and other social media sites and it's time for a change.
We want the local Sandwell Council to acknowledge our name change request to a new road name and at the very least to a similar name.
The petition suggests changing the street's name to Bell Road.
Bell End which leads onto Mincing Lane has become so well known over the years that people have travelled from outside the area to have their picture taken next to its street sign.
Rowley Regis councillor Barbara Price said she could understand residents' concerns and has vowed to meet with council bosses to discuss Bell End.
If some people find the name offensive and children are being teased about where they live then there is obviously an issue, she said.
I will be consulting with residents and speaking to the cabinet member in question to see if anything can be done.

The first Odeon cinema was opened by Oscar Deutsch in 1928, in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire (now West Midlands), although initially called Picture House. The first cinema to use the Odeon brand name was Deutsch's cinema at Perry Barr, Birmingham in 1930. Ten years later Odeon was part of the Rank Organisation who continued their ownership of the circuit for a further sixty years. It is managed by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). Local bus services operated by various companies serve the bus station which has 19 departure stands and 1 unloading stand. The bus station is located halfway between Wolverhampton, St George's West Midlands Metro tram terminus and Wolverhampton railway station
both are just a short walk away. It also features glass-enclosed waiting areas and electronic doors, allowing passengers out of designated pedestrian areas, only when buses are on stand. Uniquely, the designs for the station have meant that there is no need for buses and pedestrians paths to cross, due to the 'W' shape of the station.
The bus station's enquiry office is now in the main building, but was in the Queen's Building, a grade II listed building, now host to Costa Coffee, but which was formerly the carriage entrance to the railway station.
The original bus station was on the northern side of Railway Drive approximately where the Ring Road passes under the present road bridge. It was primarily used by Midland Red although a few WMPTE (ex-Midland Red) services also departed from there.
The station, which had existed since 1986, was closed after service finished on 3 April 2010. (The 1986 bus station replaced the original bus station on the northern side of Railway Drive.) Building work took place during the ensuing months, in which a new pedestrian bridge linking the railway and bus stations was built, a contraflow system installed along the ring road and the bus station rebuilt. The station re-opened on 24 July 2011, which coincided with the Wolverhampton bus network review and marked the end of Phase One of the project. Phase Two includes improvements to the railway station, a new hotel, and redevelopment of the canalside area, but a date for this has yet to be finalised.

Glossop's ambulance station could be under threat as health chiefs look at ways to save cash.
The Chapel Street station is one of 17 out of 35 in the region being reviewed by the North West Ambulance Service.
The service is considering closing, merging or relocating stations or carrying out major repairs.
With stations in Ashton and Dukinfield also under review, it could mean that the closest ambulance station to Glossop becomes Stockport 13 miles away.
The ambulance service will set out plans by June but says no final decisions have been made.
But local health chiefs have raised concerns about the proposals.
Dr Kailash Chand, chair of NHS Tameside and Glossop, said: This is something which is trying to get value for money but from which local communities could suffer.
Any reconfiguration in which local communities could suffer needs looking at. They are saying it will improve efficiency but I have my reservations.
Alan Stuttard, director of finance at NWAS, said that all stations in the North West will be examined.
The closure of some sites remains a possibility.
He said: In the current financial climate, as a responsible public sector organisation, NWAS must look at ways in which it can make efficiencies with minimum disruption to its frontline services.
One area which is currently being reviewed is our estate.
We are exploring opportunities to move some stations to shared or other accommodation without affecting the performance or level of resources in the area it's important to remember that it is not always the case that responding vehicles are from the nearest station. Other considerations are to ensure staff can be accommodated at appropriate sites and maintenance and running costs are minimised.
This review is looking at all stations/sites within the North West, and there is a possibility that some ambulance stations will close

These two facilities were divided along gender lines and speciality. The Milton plant was 60 per cent male and predominantly produced tools and components. Camperdown however was 80 per cent female and did the assembly work. In 1966, Timex was the third largest single employer in Dundee, and the single largest employer of women. It peaked at 6,000 total workers in 1974, which made it one of the city's largest employers and gave it a unique place in the culture of Dundee.
Dundee's other large employer of women in the mid to late 20th century was the jute industry. However, Timex's assembly line paid significantly better, making it a more attractive option for many young women. Additionally, as jute manufacturing contracted in the city in the 1950s and 1960s, Timex absorbed much of the skilled workforce. These jobs offered better pay and conditions

The 1993 Dundee Timex strike was a major industrial dispute which took place in Dundee, Scotland, in 1993. The dispute, which was notable for its level of picket-line violence and the involvement of women, ended with the closure of the Timex plant in the city after 47 years. It's considered by historians to be the last of the large industrial disputes of late 20th century Britain.
In early January 1993, there were proposed layoffs at the factory. A ballot for strike action came out at 92% in favour, while requests for negotiation and arbitration were ignored. On 29 January, the workers came out. They offered to return to work on 17 February
however, they were told that there would be a cut of 10% across the board, which was refused. On 28 August 1993, the factory shut, following six months of industrial unrest.

The mill was built in 1872 for cloth manufacturer William Bliss, to make fine tweed cloth from locally produced wool. It was designed by the architect George Woodhouse of Bolton, who also designed mills in Lancashire, including Victoria Mill in Miles Platting
Woodhouse was also involved in the construction of Bolton Town Hall.
The main 5-storey spinning building is faced with local limestone and styled to resemble a country house, with square towers at each corner topped by stone urns. Unusually, a large chimney for the furnace to power the mill's steam machinery issues from a dome at the top of a circular tower built into one façade. The chimneystack is styled as a tall Tuscan column. Inside, the building is supported by cast iron columns that carry beams bearing brick vaults. An adjacent lower building was used for weaving the tweed cloth.
The millworkers went on strike for eight months from December 1913 to June 1914, over the right of workers to join a trades union, but the mill prospered in the First World War after receiving a large order for khaki cloth for the British Army.
The mill closed in 1980 and was converted into residential apartments in around 1988

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KX3W - The Electric Cinema is a cinema in Notting Hill, London. One of the oldest working film theatres in Britain, it became Britain's first black-owned cinema in 1993, and remained black-owned until it was sold in 2000.
As of 2022, after a couple of changes of hands, the cinema is also known as the Electric Portobello, with a second screen at the old Television Centre at White City called the Electric White City
The Electric Cinema first opened in London's Portobello Road on 24 February 1910. It was one of the first buildings in Britain to be designed specifically for motion picture exhibition, and was one of the first buildings in the vicinity to be supplied with electricity. Its first film was Henry VIII, screened on 23 February 1911.
The venue opened 18 years before talkies became the norm, so had no facilities to broadcast sound. The cinema was soon eclipsed by the huge picture palaces that became fashionable during the 1930s but, despite being shuttered for brief periods, it has remained in almost continual use until the present day.
Designed by architect Gerald Seymour Valentin in the Edwardian Baroque style, it originally opened as the Electric Cinema Theatre, with 600 seats. During World War I an angry mob attacked the Electric, believing that its German-born manager was signalling to Zeppelin raiders from the roof, after nearby Arundel Gardens was hit by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin
Later, in 1932, the Electric became the Imperial Playhouse cinema, though by this time the Portobello Road area had become run down, along with the rest of Notting Hill. During this time, the venue's nickname among locals was The Bughole.
During WWII the venue was attended by up to 4000 per week, despite the Luftwaffe's night-time bombing raids.[9] During the late 1940s the notorious mass murderer John Christie (18991953) of nearby 10 Rillington Place is said to have worked at the Electric as a projectionist

It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities. Central station is served by diesel stopping trains between Liverpool and Manchester, and diesel express services between Liverpool and Manchester Airport, as well as between Liverpool and East Anglia.
Central station has no electrified lines, being served only by diesel trains.
Main station building faces away from the town and is of a classical style with some polychrome brickwork. Most of it is rented out to small businesses, the booking office and other facilities having been relocated to a modern building at a lower level. From street level, passengers climb six steps or a short ramp to reach the booking office, and climb further steps to the platforms. Disabled passengers can now easily access both platforms as lifts were installed in June 2008, making Warrington Central fully accessible for the first time.
The station has a customer service office, toilets, waiting rooms, a newsagent and a coffee stall. The entrance building was enlarged and modernised in 201011.
Outside there is a car park and a taxi rank. The station is located close to Warrington Bus Interchange.
The adjoining Cheshire Lines Warehouse (a listed building) has been redeveloped as apartments, along with six new apartment blocks
Northern Trains operates two through stopping services in each direction from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road. Late evening services operate between Warrington and either Manchester or Liverpool.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. TCAT is a unique trust, being the first in the country to include primary and secondary academies together with a sixth form college.
TCAT also includes a Church of England High School, Sir Thomas Boteler, whose faith foundation is assured through representation from the Dioceses of Chester and Liverpool.
As an inclusive MAT with a strong moral purpose we are committed to providing an environment and education where every young person is nurtured, challenged and inspired to achieve the very best for themselves and their communities. Young people are at the heart of everything we do.
There are currently 10 academies within the trust including four primary academies, three with nurseries, five secondary academies and a sixth form college.
We have close to 8,000 children and young people in our care along with around 1,000 staff.
This may seem like a huge number of people, however we pride ourselves on maintaining an intimacy within this which is built upon positive and professional relationships.

During 1842, Haymarket railway station was opened as the original terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. The station represented the launch of a new age of travelling opportunities to the Scottish capital, being the first intercity route to be built and offering a previously unheard of journey time of two and a half hours between Scotland's two largest cities. Reportedly, early passenger numbers were far in excess of any expectations held during the line's construction, having topped one million by 1846. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AND979 - Mind the gap is an audible or visual warning phrase issued to rail passengers to take caution while crossing the horizontal, and in some cases vertical, spatial gap between the train door and the station platform.
The phrase was first introduced in 1968 on the London Underground in the United Kingdom. It is today popularly associated with the UK among tourists because of the particularly British word choice (this meaning of the verb mind has largely fallen into disuse in the US).
The phrase Mind the gap was coined in around 1968 for a planned automated announcement, after it had become impractical for drivers and station attendants to warn passengers. London Underground chose digital recording using solid state equipment with no moving parts. As data storage capacity was expensive, the phrase had to be short. A concise warning was also easier to paint onto the platform.
The equipment was supplied by AEG Telefunken. According to the Independent on Sunday, sound engineer Peter Lodge, who owned Redan Recorders in Bayswater, working with a Scottish Telefunken engineer, recorded an actor reading Mind the gap and Stand clear of the doors please, but the actor insisted on royalties and the phrases had to be re-recorded. Lodge read the phrases to line up the recording equipment for level and those were used.
While Lodge's recording is still in use, some lines use other recordings. One was recorded by voice artist Emma Clarke. Others, on the Piccadilly line for example, were by Archers actor Tim Bentinck for 15 years, but are now by Julie Berry. At least 10 stations were supplied with announcers manufactured by PA Communications Ltd. of Milton Keynes. The recorded voice is that of Keith Wilson, their industrial sales manager at the time (May 1990). It can still be heard, at Paddington for example.

Abellio ScotRail's contract to run train services in Scotland will end early, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson has announced.
The Dutch firm has been running the franchise since 2015 but had faced criticism over cancellations and performance levels.
The contract, worth more than £7bn over 10 years, was due to last until 2025.
But Mr Matheson said a so-called break clause would be used to end the franchise three years early, in 2022.
He told MSPs he was looking at other options for the future, including the franchise being run by the public sector.
What is the ScotRail franchise?
ScotRail operates about 2,400 train services a day, and covers all services in Scotland except those run by other operators which cross the border.
It is not responsible for the maintenance of the track, which falls under Network Rail nor the operation of the main rail routes from Glasgow and Edinburgh to London.
There had been political pressure on ministers over the service with complaints over a high number of cancellations, overcrowding and the cost of tickets.
In a statement to the Scottish Parliament, Mr Matheson said a proposed increase in government subsidy for the service would not deliver sufficient benefits to passengers or the economy.

Mr Matheson said Abellio had successes and challenges over the first five years of the ScotRail franchise, but that his decision was the right one for passengers, communities, the economy and taxpayers.
He confirmed the contract would now run until 31 March, 2022.
It is of course necessary to plan for the future provision of ScotRail services and I can confirm that work is already under way to examine the options open to the Scottish ministers after the current contract comes to an end, he said.
The franchise system for Britain's railways is grinding to a halt.

It was developed as a joint project between two UK nationalised industries the National Bus Company and British Leyland. Buses were constructed at a specially built factory at the Lillyhall Industrial Estate, Workington. Styling was carried out by the Italian vehicle stylist Giovanni Michelotti, previously commissioned by both Triumph (Herald, TR4, GT6, 2000/2500, 1300, Dolomite and Stag) and Scammell lorries (Routeman GRP cab).
It was intended to replace all the rear-engined single-decker buses offered by British Leyland, including the AEC Swift, Bristol RE, single-deck Daimler Fleetline, Daimler Roadliner and Leyland Panther.
The Leyland National was built with integral, modular construction and a rear engine. All components were designed for ease of construction and replacement. Until 1978, it was always built with a roof mounted pod at the rear, housing the heating equipment, which consequently blew warm air out at roof level. At first the pod was almost the length of a bay and appeared designed to give a Trans-Atlantic feel. In 1976 a new shorter version of the roof pod was introduced along with the battery being relocated to the front under the cab. The Leyland National was available in three lengths, the majority being 10.3m and 11.3m. It was easy to spot the longer ones as its main side windows were all the same length, on the shorter models the windows were shorter except for one in the middle (where the exit doors were on dual door variants) which was the same length as on the longer models. The third length was 10.9m, specially produced for Australian operators due to stringent axle weight limits. This used the front section of the 11.3 metre bus and the rear action of the 10.3 metre bus. One 10.9 metre bus (the prototype) was sold to a Scottish operator (Rennies of Dunfirmline)

The station was controversially rebuilt in the mid-1960s, including the demolition of the Arch and the Great Hall, to accommodate the electrified West Coast Main Line, and the revamped station still attracts criticism over its architecture. Euston is to be the London terminus for the planned High Speed 2 railway and the station is being redeveloped to handle it.

It is one of two London termini of the South Eastern main line, the other being Charing Cross, while the Underground station is on the Circle and District lines, between Monument and Mansion House. The station runs services by Southeastern, mostly catering for commuters in southeast London and Kent, with occasional services further into the latter.
The station was built on a site of the medieval steelyard, the trading base in England of the Hanseatic League. It was built by the South Eastern Railway in order to have a railway terminal in the City and compete with the rival London, Chatham and Dover Railway. This required a new bridge across the River Thames, which was constructed between 1863 and 1866. The station was initially a stop for continental services from Charing Cross.
Planning permission was granted in March 2007 to replace the Poulson building, with a new air rights building designed by Foggo Associates. Hines, the US developer, led a £360 million project involving the demolition of Poulson's office block, replacing it with a mixed-use development containing more than 400,000 sq ft (37,000 m2) of office space alongside 17,000 sq ft (1,600 m2) of station retail space. The original interchange was built in 1929 as a bus depot by Midland Red, which was later converted into Digbeth Coach Station. Successor company Midland Red West used the coach station as a base for its Birmingham and Black Country operations. The original building was dark and dingy as it was not originally intended to serve passengers as a coach interchange.
Plans were initially developed for a new coach station on Great Charles Street, as Digbeth was considered by National Express to be an undesirable location. However, after the completion of the new Bullring and the planned Eastside redevelopment, it was decided to demolish the old structure and build a new coach station on the same site. Outline planning application for a design by Make Architects was submitted on behalf of National Express to Birmingham City Council in March 2006. However this option was abandoned in favour of a competing design by SBS Architects. The final planning application for the design by SBS Architects was submitted on 29 October 2007.
The old coach station closed in November 2007 for redevelopment and during reconstruction National Express used a temporary site in Oxford Street on the opposite side of Digbeth High Street, called Birmingham Central Coach Station. The refurbishment was estimated to have cost £15 million. It was officially reopened on 18 December 2009 by the England national football team manager Fabio Capello. The new station has been awarded a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

It operated from 1 January 1923 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948. Following the collapse of Virgin Trains East Coast in May 2018, the newly-nationalised operator of the East Coast Main Line was named London North Eastern Railway to evoke the earlier company

The airline was formed following the merger of the travel division of TUI AG and First Choice Holidays plc in September 2007 to form TUI Travel. The two companies' respective airlines, Thomsonfly and First Choice Airways, were merged under the former's Air Operator's Certificate in May 2008 and were rebranded as Thomson Airways on 1 November 2008. TUI Travel merged with TUI AG to form TUI Group in December 2014.
TUI Airways officially changed its legal name from Thomson Airways to TUI Airways on 2 October 2017. This was in line with sister companies TUI fly Belgium, TUI fly Deutschland, TUI fly Netherlands and TUI fly Nordic. All airlines in the group, excluding Corsair International, are now rebranded to TUI.

Redrock Stockport, a leisure complex which cost a whopping £45 million, has been named Britain's ugliest building of 2018.
The structure, just south of Manchester includes a ten-screen cinema, restaurants, bars, retail and a 340 space multi-storey car park across 75,000 ft² of space.
The complex faced some fierce eyesore competition from various building structures.
The original nominator slated it as one of the most horrendous architectural responses ever conceived for Greater Manchester.
The Carbuncle Cup was established by Building Design (BD) in 2006 as a light-hearted way of drawing attention to a serious problem - the bad architecture blighting the country's town and cities.
The Carbuncle Cup: Britain's ugliest buildings decided
The judges, chaired by BD's editor Thomas Lane, took readers' comments into account during the judging process.
These included: Absolute monstrosity. I've seen better-looking prisons.
The building was designed by BDP for the local council and is part of a wider £1 billion regeneration project for the community - but judges said the shed-like building ridiculed the town centre.
One judge even went as far in saying: You feel sorry for the people of Stockport.

It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities. Central station is served by diesel stopping trains between Liverpool and Manchester, and diesel express services between Liverpool and the North East of England or between Liverpool and East Anglia.
Central station has no electrified lines being served only by diesel trains. The second station serving the town centre is Warrington Bank Quay, which accommodates electrified lines on the West Coast Main Line with express services to London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Scotland and also an electrified service to Liverpool Lime Street. The main station building faces away from the town and is of a classical style with some polychrome brickwork. Leeds and Manchester are booming rail hubs. They have seen massive increases in passenger numbers, yet there has been little (Manchester) or no (Leeds) investment in the railway infrastructure. Widespread electrification was promised and then unpromised. It hasn't been cancelled, but it won't happen. The short lengths of railway that are being electrified have been massively delayed.
The Ordsall Curve in Manchester has created more demand without creating any new capacity. Manchester Victoria is full, and yet more trains are running through it.Result is chaos

The railway follows most of the alignment of the northern part of the Waverley Route, a former double-track line in southern Scotland and northern England that ran between Edinburgh and Carlisle. Following deliberations in the Scottish Parliament, the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006 received Royal Assent in June 2006. The project was renamed the Borders Railway in August 2008, and building works began in November 2012. Passenger service on the line began on 6 September 2015, whilst an official opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 September.
The railway was rebuilt as a non-electrified, largely single-track line. Several surviving Waverley Route structures, including viaducts and tunnels, were rehabilitated and reused for the reopened railway. Passenger services run half-hourly on weekdays until 20:00, and hourly until 23:54 and on Sundays. The timetable also allows charter train promoters to run special excursion services, and for the weeks following the line opening scheduled steam trains were run.

In 2007, the ninety British diplomatic missions that issued passports were consolidated into seven regional passport processing centres (RPPCs) based in Düsseldorf, Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris, Pretoria, Washington, D.C. and Wellington with an additional centre in Dublin.
The Identity Documents Act 2010 repealed the Identity Cards Act 2006, and required the cancellation of all identity cards and the destruction of all data held.
On 1 April 2011 responsibility for British passports issued overseas passed from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to IPS. The printing of passports issued overseas had been done in the UK since August 2011 and the administrative work performed at these RPPCs was repatriated to the UK during the 201314 financial year. From April 2014 all British nationals based overseas had to apply for their passports directly to the UK.
The Identity and Passport Service was renamed HM Passport Office on 13 May 2013 in an effort to reflect the agency's departure from its association with the scrapped National Identity Register and ID cards. The government stated in the press release that The inclusion of 'Her Majesty's' in the title recognises that passports are the property of the Crown, bear the royal coat of arms and are issued under the royal prerogative.
HMPO's executive agency status was removed on 1 October 2014 and it became a division within the Home Office. Its board reports directly to the Home Office's executive management board
