In 2005 the English Heritage report Low Demand Housing and the Historic Environment found that repairing a standard Victorian terraced house over 30 years is around 60% cheaper than building and maintaining a newly built house. In a 2003 survey for Heritage Counts a team of experts contrasted a Victorian terrace with a house built after 1980, and found that:
The research demonstrated that, contrary to earlier thinking, older housing actually costs less to maintain and occupy over the long-term life of the dwelling than more modern housing. It means that at least some of the thousands of dull, often vandalised, green electrical boxes that dot most streets across Liverpool now shine with fresh paint and the faces and words of the likes of Che Guevara, Bob Marley, John Lennon and Bill Shankly.
It all started with an image of Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue being introduced to Larkhill Lane in Clubmoor about five years ago.
Now, after catching up with the artist some may dub the Scouse Banksy, the ECHO can shed light on the work making passers-by smile and, crucially for the man behind it, think about the world they live in.
And the L13 location of his first piece and the focus on electrical boxes begin to make sense when you realise Sine Missione is an electrician from nearby Anfield - details he was happy to be revealed, so long as his name and picture were not.
He told the ECHO: I'd been looking at these green boxes for years. They are a blight on the city - they are like vandalism and I've taken it upon myself to look after them.
They are like visual vandalism, it's really hard to be happy if all you see is black, grey and brown. There's no colour anywhere and we need colour in our lives.
So he bought some paint, gave an electrical box a fresh coat of paint then returned when it was dry with a sticker of Christ the Redeemer he had created.
That was the birth of Sine Missione - the first of hundreds of pieces of art that have seen him hard at work in the dead of night, posing as a workman to avoid the questions of officials

He told the ECHO: I'd been looking at these green boxes for years. They are a blight on the city - they are like vandalism and I've taken it upon myself to look after them.
They are like visual vandalism, it's really hard to be happy if all you see is black, grey and brown. There's no colour anywhere and we need colour in our lives.
So he bought some paint, gave an electrical box a fresh coat of paint then returned when it was dry with a sticker of Christ the Redeemer he had created.
That was the birth of Sine Missione - the first of hundreds of pieces of art that have seen him hard at work in the dead of night, posing as a workman to avoid the questions of officials

The name comes from láng, the Hungarian word for flame.
Up to the mid 20th century, bread was baked once a week due to the cost of heating up the large oven and the lengthy process kneading up to 80 pounds of dough. Because the bread loaf, typical to Hungary, was 6 to 10 pounds each, traditionally they used to bake smaller (1-2 pounds) cipó rolls for the evening and the next day. The name lángos (literally meaning flamed) comes from baking these flat breads in the morning while the oven was still heating up. Lángos were also used as a side to lunch
The dough for lángos is made of water or milk, flour, yeast, and salt. The ingredients are worked together either by hand or a kneading machine. As the yeast starts to metabolize the carbohydrates in the flour, carbon dioxide is released which causes the dough to rise, creating the air bubbles in the lángos. The dough is basically the same as pizza dough, but it is not baked but fried in oil. Adding sour cream, yoghurt or mashed potatoes to the dough is optional but highly encouraged, in the latter case it is called potato lángos (in Hungarian krumplis lángos)
In the early 2000s, some people built small, portable clay ovens and started to sell oven baked lángos, called kenyérlángos (bread-lángos) on festivals and fairs. Although reminiscent of the traditional lángos, it is more like a pizza with sour cream, onions and bacon.
Lángos is popular all year long. As it is a rather affordable and simple food, it is often sold around bus stations, fairs, local markets and all over Eastern European countries during local celebrations or sport events. It is sold at many fast-food restaurants not only in Hungary but also in Austria.

It is an ancient chapelry of Fylingdales in the wapentake of Whitby Strand. It is on the Cleveland Way national trail and also the end point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route.
The origin of the name is uncertain, and it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village. It is attested to in the early sixteenth century as Robyn Hoodis Baye in 1544. The English ballad The Noble Fisherman tells a story of Robin Hood visiting Scarborough, taking a job as a fisherman, defeating French pirates with his archery skills, and using half the looted treasure to build a home for the poor. However, the ballad is only attested to in the 17th century at the earliest. It is considered more likely to be a work original to the 17th century rather than an older medieval popular legend passed down, and very unlikely to be based on any historical incident. However, it is possible the author knew of Robin Hood's Bay, and sought to tie the story they wrote to the Scarborough area to explain and justify the name
The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling, and there is reputed to be a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. During the late 18th century smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast. Vessels from the continent brought contraband which was distributed by contacts on land and the operations were financed by syndicates who made profits without the risks taken by the seamen and the villagers. Tea, gin, rum, brandy and tobacco were among the contraband smuggled into Yorkshire from the Netherlands and France to avoid the duty.
In 1773 two excise cutters, the Mermaid and the Eagle, were outgunned and chased out of the bay by three smuggling vessels, a schooner and two shallops.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDF6 - Salford archaeology within the Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford, was commissioned by Glossop Land Ltd to carry out a programme of archaeological works in advance of the development of the Woods Mill complex, Glossop, Derbyshire. The proposed works included the demolition of a cotton mill that was part of the 19th century Howard Town Mills Complex and the redevelopment of the site for residential, retail and office use.
The site was occupied from 1803 by a water-powered cotton mill, which was destroyed by fire in 1842. The mill was subsequently purchased for use by John Wood, who redeveloped the site as the Howard Town Mills. The complex was slowly expanded eastwards until, at its height, it was employing 8000 people and was the largest integrated cotton spinning and weaving complex in Derbyshire. After John Wood died in 1854, the mill entered a slow decline until it was sold off in 1919. Although the western half continued in use as a cotton mill, the eastern half was taken over by Volcrepe Rubber in 1932, who continued to operate on the site until 2002.
This archive contains the results of the archaeological investigations undertaken by Salford Archaeology within the Woods Mill complex. This includes a level III building survey of the Narrow Spinning Mill and a report of the survey and excavation results, amalgamated into a single narrative that presents the archaeological evidence for the development of this important mill complex.

Rom-com lovers have flocked from all parts of London (and abroad) to relive the Notting Hill scene. And if you're reading this, I'm guessing you want to do the same.
The travel bookshop sits pretty right off of Portobello Road at 13 Blenheim Crescent, London W11 2EE. The exteriors are hard to miss, with bright blue exteriors that match Hugh Grant's infamous blue door (located at 280 Westbourne Park Road).
The Travel bookshop in Notting Hill is around a 10-minute walk from Notting Hill Gate station.
Before the bookshops claim to fame the Notting Hill Travel Bookshop was just a charming local bookshop on the streets of West London. The director Richard Curtis used to pass the bookshop all the time, promptly inspiring him for the set of the film. But when asked to use it as the filming location for Notting Hillthey refused. So he ended up recreating the bookshop on set, and the rest is history
My rom-com heart melted when I found out just how many proposals take place in the bookshop! The owners told press that many couples come to drop on one knee and they even help with the planning process sometimes to make it extra special (definitely not giving you ideas).

CBGB is a rock star past his prime singing hits we've heard a thousand times and new songs we don't want to hear at all.
Despite the heartfelt efforts to save the club from its demise over a rent dispute with the latest charge led by Little Steven Van Zandt it's time to let it die.
No longer relevant as a cultural spawning ground, the club's everything that punk rock isn't an institution, a landmark, a stop on the same New York tour bus which brakes at the Plaza Hotel and the Empire State Building.
Withdraw the artificial life support. Let it be remembered in our rock n' roll hearts, but don't let it wither on the Bowery.
The venerated venue, which opened in 1973, was truly the birthplace of punk. It was where the Ramones sniffed glue, where Patti Smith first danced barefoot, where the Talking Heads turned psycho killers, where thousands of bands screamed their hearts out and plastered their stickers on the walls. It gave kids all over the world a fresh idea of what music could be.
As a heralded institution, it's unequaled, but as a place to break bands, the club hasn't mattered for years. It only draws a crowd for special industry events or anniversary parties.
All eyes are upon it now because the lease, held by the Bowery Residents Committee (a non-profit group to aid the homeless), is up on Aug. 31 and hasn't been renewed. There is a court clash and negotiations over unpaid back rent and future rent, which the BRC wants to double.
To support the legal battle, the club is holding punk bandstudded benefits (with big-bang bands such as the Circle Jerks and the Dead Boys) throughout August and September.

Born in Heaton Moor, Stockport, Cheshire, the son of a bank manager, Gow attended Altrincham County High School. After training as a chemist, he returned to his old school as a teacher. In the late 1920s he made several educational silent films with his pupils: The People of the Axe (1926) and The People of the Lake (1928) recreated life in ancient Britain, the latter produced 'with the approval of' Sir William Boyd Dawkins
The Man Who Changed His Mind (1928) was a Boy Scout adventure with a cameo from Robert Baden-Powell
The Glittering Sword (1929) was a medieval parable about disarmament.
Writing occupied his spare time during his years as a schoolmaster, and he wrote several plays for the BBC. At the age of 35 he had his first professional production, in London and New York, with Gallows Glorious (1933), a play about the American slavery abolitionist John Brown.
In 1934 he wrote Love on the Dole, based on Walter Greenwood's novel about unemployment in Salford during the Great Depression. The play was a huge success. Wendy Hiller played the lead, and also made her first film appearance in the Gow-scripted Lancashire Luck.
In 1937 Hiller and Gow married. They later moved to Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, where they raised two children, Ann (19392006) and Anthony (b. 1942). He lived with Hiller at their home, Spindles, until his death in 1993. He continued writing plays into his eighties, providing material for his wife in adaptations of Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1946), which was a great success while Ann Veronica (1949), adapted from the H. G. Wells novel,[1] quickly proved a commercial failure. Gow was co-credited for the book used in the musical version of Ann Veronica which premiered in 1969. His other adaptations include Vita Sackville-West's The Edwardians and A Boston Story (1966), based on Henry James' Watch and Ward.

The BBC science-fiction television series Doctor Who features a time machine, the TARDIS, disguised as a Mackenzie Trench-style police box. A mosaic tribute to The Fall's Mark E. Smith has been unveiled - and purposefully hidden away on a back street for fans to discover in the Northern Quarter
There is a new tribute to The Fall frontman Mark E Smith in Manchester city centre - but you'll have to head off the beaten track to find it.
The maverick mastermind of the Manc band died in January, aged 60, after battling cancer, with tributes paid from rock and cultural icons from across the globe.
Now there's a permanent tribute, hidden in the Northern Quarter, to his lyrical genius.
Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.
I like the corner because it's hidden and to an extent The Fall were quite a hidden band and Mark's lyrics have many hidden meanings too.
It's hard to find, and like The Fall in many respects, you have to look for it and that works for me.
The lyrics on the artwork read: Identity art.. if only the shards you'd relocate back in place, ending with the dates of Smith's life - 1957-2018.
Kennedy was keen for a female artist to create the works, as a testament to the female musicians in The Fall, and commissioned Leeds-based Mary Goodwin

A survey carried out before the English Half Marathon found parts of the gate were \u2018alarmingly unstable\u2019.
Contractors warned that although the structure was safe, the council would be taking a risk if runners were to start and end the race by passing through the town's Golden Gates.
The council has now hired engineering consultants Ramboll to apply for planning permission to remove the gates so repair work can be carried out at a secure location.
If the plans go ahead, the refurbishment should be completed in time for the Walking Day procession to pass through the Golden Gates next summer.
Work could cost in the region of \u00a3500,000.
Planning documents say it will take several months for the gates to be restored and temporary fencing will be put in place while the work is carried out.
According to the local newspaper, Warrington Borough Council Leader, Cllr Terry O\u2019Neill, said: \u201cThe golden gates are an iconic symbol of Warrington and a hugely important part of our history and heritage.
\u201cThey are also part of the Grade I listed Town Hall site, which we have a duty to preserve. That\u2019s why we want to take action now to protect their future.
\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that these gates are unique \u2013 there are no others like them in the world. Therefore, this will require very complex, technical works.\u201d
About 10 of the floral decorations on the gates are broken and areas of decorative ironwork are also corroded.
The smaller pedestrian gates are also broken and cannot be opened.
Cllr O\u2019Neill added: \u201cThis planning application is the next stage of this important project. If it is approved, we can move ahead with identifying a firm with the right expertise \u2013 who can provide value for money, and take a conservation-based approach that will ensure our gates remain a much-loved symbol of our civic pride for many years to come.\u201d
The Golden Gates were built in 1862 and were destined to be a gift for Queen Victoria to be installed at Sandringham. But when she went to take a look at them, she was shocked to see a statue of Oliver Cromwell standing behind them and refused to accept the present.
Interesting factoid: Contrary to popular belief they have not removed the 4th angel. The winged figures represent Nike, goddess of Victory, actually a nod to Queen Victoria in 1895.

As part of a programme of improvements by Merseytravel, the underground station has been fitted with automatic ticket barriers and machines.
Network Rail announced in early 2013 that Lime Street was to be the third station to be refurbished as part of the £40 million investment which would see all Merseyrail underground stations excluding Conway Park refurbished. This included the refurbishment of the platform and the booking hall. The station refurbishment work took place between April and August 2013.
Subway refurbishment
The subway linking the underground station to the mainline station was refurbished in June 2014. The subway was fitted out with new tiles, lighting, flooring and automatic doors to some of the entrances.
The underground station had WiFi installed in January 2016.
In March 2016, it was announced that the Wirral Line loop would be having its track renewed. The underground station was closed between 3 January 2017 and 18 June 2017 whilst the works took place.
Services
Services operate on a 5-minute frequency Monday-Saturday, and between 5- and 10-minute frequency on Sundays in the winter. All trains travel through to Liverpool Central and Birkenhead of which:

4 trains per hour continue to Chester
2 trains per hour continue to Ellesmere Port
To reach destinations on the Northern Line of the network, passengers must either use the Wirral Line and change at Liverpool Central station or walk the short distance to the station.

A prominent two storey Grade I Listed Building of Medieval origin, the Old Town Hall mostly dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
1345 is the earliest reference to the predecessor of the building, variously termed the Toll booth', 'Common Hall' and Motehall' or Moot Hall' in later medieval sources. In 1668 the medieval hall was demolished to make way for a new one on the same site. It is this building, finished in 1669, with numerous subsequent alterations and extensions which survives today.
Over the years, the ground floor of the building has consistently remained in commercial and retail use whilst the grander public rooms at first floor level have accommodated a number of important civic functions including, most notably the Courts of Assize until 1881, the City's Magistrates Court until 1941, and Council Chamber and offices of the City of Carlisle Corporation until 1964.

In 1879, on the death of his father, Andrew gained control of the business, and in 1890 converted the private company into the publicly listed Peter Walker & Son Warrington & Burton Ltd. The later Sir Andrew pioneered many of the innovations in brewing production, beer distribution and pub management that we take for granted today, including patenting the Burton Union System. Designed by Sir John Fowler, the station, the northern terminus for services to London St Pancras, was opened in July 1880 by the Cheshire Lines Committee. Fingerprintz were vocalist Jimme O'Neill and guitarist Cha Burns who got together in London's late 70's new wave music scene. O'Neill wrote songs for Paul Young and Lene Lovich, while Burns played guitar in Adam Ant's backing band during 1982-1984 together with Fingerprintz drummer Bogdan Wiczling. O'Neill, who, in the mid 1970s, had worked for a time as a clerical assistant in the Department of Health and Social Security, released a single for Oval Records in 1975, 'Achin' in My Heart'/'Cold on Me', under the name Jimme Shelter (a throwback to the song, 'Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones).

'Street Life' is the opening track of Roxy Music's third album Stranded, their first album with Eddie Jobson. He replaced the mighty Brian Eno. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1973 and reached number 9 on the charts.
Def Leppard covered 'Street Life' on their album Yeah!. Morrissey also performed the song during some European festival dates during his 2006 tour.
There are quite a few good Roxy compilations around. Check one out to hear more from this excellent band.

I met this chap in Leeds, just outside the city centre. He struck up a conversation while wheeling along his bike. He was very well spoken and told me he slept under the M261, which scoops around the town. Its pretty dry under there, but will be bitterly cold as a chill wind blows through.
I left him the change in my pocket, it was too late to go and buy him something to eat, which I would have preferred. I notice often that beggers are getting fussy. They prefer unopened sandwiches that can be sold on etc.

The first known example of 'modern style' graffiti survives in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus (in modern-day Turkey). Local guides say it is an advertisement for prostitution. Located near a mosaic and stone walkway, the graffiti shows a handprint that vaguely resembles a heart, along with a footprint and a number. This is believed to indicate that a brothel was nearby, with the handprint symbolizing payment.
In modern times, spray paint, normal paint and markers have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages or just to be comic or witty.
To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions
to others it is merely vandalism. Graffiti has since evolved into a pop culture existence often related to underground hip hop music and b-boying creating a lifestyle that remains hidden from the general public.
Banksy is one of the world's most notorious and popular street artist who continues to remain faceless in today's society. He is known for his political, anti-war stencil art mainly in Bristol, England but his work can be seen anywhere from Los Angeles to Palestine. In the UK, Banksy is the most recognizable icon for this cultural artistic movement and keeps his identity a secret to avoid arrest.
Much of Banksy's artwork can be seen around the streets of London and surrounding suburbs, though he has painted pictures around the world, including the Middle East, where he has painted on Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with satirical images of life on the other side. One depicted a hole in the wall with an idyllic beach, while another shows a mountain landscape on the other side. A number of exhibitions have also taken place since 2000, and recent works of art have fetched vast sums of money.
Banksy's art is a prime example of the classic controversy: vandalism vs. art. Art supporters endorse his work distributed in urban areas as pieces of art while city officials and law enforcement have deemed all work by Banksy to be vandalism and property destruction. Many members of Bristol's communities feel that Banksy's graffiti reduces property value and encourages rogue behavior.
Before anyone comments, this one is not likely to be a 'Banksy'. If it were I may have taken it into pieces and loaded it into the boot of my car for my retirement fund 8-)

Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

At the time of the Enterprise Act 2002 after an OFCOM review, Openreach was created to 'Ensure that all rival operators have equality of access to BT's own local network'.
Field engineers like Alan install and maintain the physical network wiring into end users' premises regardless of which telecoms provider is actually retailing the service to the end-user. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4334926783 - 'Quite an unassuming place Warrington Museum, Cheshire seems, when looked at while being dragged around at high speed by a young child.
The museum is one of the oldest municipal museums in the UK and reflects something of the important local Victorians around at the time (1848), their interests and travels. It is a grade II listed building and houses fossils, Egyptian artefacts as well as relics of the old Warrington industries such as steel (particularly wire), clocks, textiles, brewing, tanning and chemicals are on display.
Since designation as new town, it is hard to see the old history beyond the shopping sites and new roads and buildings.
It can be regarded as a dormitory town for manchester or Liverpool and to wait on central station for the 08:13 sort of confirms that stereotype, particularly the stand in the corridor until Birchwood. Slightly shamefully hat was how I came to live in Warrington many years ago.
If you have time, spend a quarter of an hour in this little municipal jewel box. Slide out some fossil draws and check out how it used to be.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDW8 - Warrington Bus Interchange (also known as Warrington Interchange) is a bus station in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, access to the adjoining Bhs coffee shop and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCM2 - The Printworks entertainment venue is located on the revamped Withy Grove site of the business premises of the 19th century newspaper proprietor Edward Hulton, established in 1873 and later expanded.
Hulton's son Sir Edward Hulton expanded his father's newspaper interests and sold his publishing business based in London and Manchester to Lord Beaverbrook and Lord Rothermere when he retired in 1923. Most of the Hulton newspapers were sold again soon afterwards to the Allied Newspapers consortium formed in 1924 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1943 and bought by Roy Thomson in 1959).
Earlier names of the buildings associated with publishing that were incorporated into the development include Withy Grove Printing House, the Chronicle Buildings, Allied House, Kemsley House, Thomson House and Maxwell House. Kemsley House on the corner of Withy Grove and Corporation Street was developed gradually from 1929 and became the largest newspaper printing house in Europe.
The site housed a printing press until 1986. Robert Maxwell bought the property for £1 and subsequently closed it down. The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.
