A new major photographic exhibition from Tom Wood, showcasing 50 years of the artist's work.

'Photie Man' celebrates the internationally-acclaimed Irish artist Tom Wood (b. 1951), showcasing his iconic images of Liverpool and bringing together his work from across all decades, it will be the first major retrospective of Tom's work in Liverpool.
Embraced locally as ?photieman', Wood has dedicated much of his career to the people and places of Liverpool and Merseyside to create an intimate, diverse and knowing portrait of the city and the surrounding area, and his pioneering photographs capture a definitive phase in the social and political history of the region. He is one of the most influential photographers working today.
Highlights include epic and renowned projects such as ?Looking for Love' from the Chelsea Reach nightclub in New Brighton, and Wood's widely-praised Bus Series (?All Zones Off Peak'). Unseen long-term studies of two major local institutions like Cammell Laird Shipyard feature alongside his images taken around the city's football grounds.
The exhibition will also explore Wood's use of found photographs and landscape photography taken in Ireland and North Wales, alongside never-before seen film work from the artist.

Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

The Grade II listed structure is to be returned to its former glory
A project to preserve Warrington's iconic Golden Gates ? which could cost more than ?500,000 ? has started.
The restoration scheme will see the Grade II* listed structure restored to its former glory.
It is believed the gates were originally intended as a gift for Queen Victoria before being purchased for the town by councillor Frederick Monks.
The previous refurbishment was carried out in 1978-79.
However, the council says the 'urban location' and proximity to a 'marine climate' have resulted in the gates showing signs of deterioration.
Having identified the need for repairs, the authority began work with international engineering, design and consultancy company, Ramboll, to identify the right conservators to carry out the specialist work.
Following a tender process, the council selected Hall Conservation ? one of the UK's leading conservation firms ? as the contractor.
Workers are currently at the site as the project to repair, enhance and preserve the gates gathers pace.
Once the dismantling process is completed, they will be transported to Hall Conservation's workshop, where they will be fully inspected, in conjunction with Ramboll, and repaired and repainted before they return to Warrington.
It is planned that they will be reconstructed on site early next year.
Cllr Dan Price, executive board member for culture and partnerships, said: The Golden Gates are an iconic symbol of Warrington.
They are truly unique, with none others like them in the world.
It's vital that we protect this key part of our cultural heritage - and that's why this work is so important.
We are taking a conservation-based approach to ensure that the proposed work complies with national and local planning policy, as well as nationally recognised conservation guidance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG37YT - The current North Bridge is 525 feet (160 m) long and has three spans of arched girders each 175 feet (53 m) feet in length. It is 75 feet (23 m) wide. It was constructed from 1894?1897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. A medal[3] was struck commemorating the opening of the bridge on 15 September 1897.[4] The medal shows a view of the bridge with trains underneath and on the obverse a bust of the by then knighted Sir Andrew McDonald, Lord Provost.[5]

Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.[6]
At the southern end of the bridge (where it meets the Royal Mile and South Bridge, in the Edinburgh's Old Town) are substantial buildings whose main entrances are at carriageway level but which also have entrances in the valley below. Those on the west side are The Scotsman Hotel, former headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper, alongside a block of commercial premises and flats (Royal Mile Mansions). That on the east housed Patrick Thomson's department store from 1906 until 1976 when its then owner the House of Fraser rebranded it as Arnotts department store. The store closed in 1981 and the building was redeveloped as a hotel and smaller shops.

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18B2 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. Built in red sandstone,[2] its plan consists of a west tower, a six-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, and a chancel flanked by chapels to the north and south. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJGY - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a ?47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJPH8 - In May 2008 it was announced that some of the complex of buildings that hold the Central Library will be demolished and replaced with modern buildings suitable for use with modern IT services. The historic buildings in the complex will be refurbished to provide modern facilities. In October 2009 the proposed rebuild was shown to the public.
The main library building on William Brown Street closed on 23 July 2010, while closed, a temporary service operated from next door, on the second floor of Liverpool World Museum. It re-opened to the public on Friday 17th May 2013.
It is a member of the Libraries Together: Liverpool Learning Partnership (evolved from Liverpool Libraries Group) which formed in 1990. Under which, a registered reader at any of the member libraries can have access rights to the other libraries within the partnership
