Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF28P - Distinctive ZZ car stop Sleeper board on a platform at Dundee railway station in Scotland. The large white ZZ lettering stands out against the dark green sign, with the word Sleeper beneath, while waiting passengers, curving railway tracks, overhead canopies and the station's ironwork recede into the softly focused background. The photograph records a railway operating marker used to help position a long overnight train correctly alongside the platform. Car stop boards indicate where part of a train should be brought to a halt so that coaches and doors line up safely with the usable platform area.
At Dundee, the sleeper marker is associated with the Caledonian Sleeper service linking Scotland with London. Dundee is served on the overnight route between Aberdeen and London Euston, giving passengers the option of boarding in eastern Scotland, sleeping aboard the train and arriving in central London the following morning. The service combines rail transport with overnight accommodation and remains one of Britain's best-known sleeper operations.
The image also captures the everyday human setting of a working Scottish station, with travellers and luggage waiting near the platform edge beneath the glazed and metal canopy. Dundee station stands near the city centre and waterfront, providing connections towards Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and destinations across Britain. Its station code is DEE.
This tightly framed transport photograph is suitable for editorial themes including Caledonian Sleeper travel, overnight rail services, sustainable alternatives to domestic flying, railway signs, platform operations, train positioning, Scottish public transport, passenger journeys, railway heritage, station infrastructure and long-distance travel between Scotland and England. The prominent ZZ lettering is also an unusual example of specialist rail signage that many passengers may notice without understanding its purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4C4G - Casino-style Red Hot Odds Roulette slot machine photographed in an adult gaming or amusement arcade setting, with bright green illuminated panels, a roulette wheel graphic, digital history display, cash payment slot, in-game credit message and a prominent £100 prize sign above the machine. Visible wording includes Red Hot Odds Roulette, win up to £100 and insert cash or credit, making the image a strong editorial illustration of electronic gambling, slot machine design, roulette-style games, 18+ gaming, instant-win temptation, gambling addiction, gambling harms and the commercial appeal of brightly lit gaming cabinets.
The photograph is useful for coverage of the way gambling machines borrow casino language, colour, sound and reward psychology to encourage play. Roulette is traditionally associated with casinos, but this machine translates that visual world into a compact arcade cabinet, combining red and black number grids, flashing lights, jackpot-style messaging and rapid decision-making. Those design cues can make gambling feel exciting, social and harmless, while critics and public health campaigners warn that electronic gaming machines may also contribute to loss chasing, risky behaviour and problem gambling for vulnerable players.
This image can support editorial stories about gambling regulation, amusement arcades, adult gaming centres, high street betting culture, age-restricted entertainment, safer gambling messages, addiction support, affordability checks, consumer protection and the debate over how gambling products are marketed. It is especially relevant to articles about temptation, the normalisation of gambling, harm prevention, online and offline gaming habits, cash play, gambling advertising and the need for clear help routes for anyone struggling to stop. The dark arcade surroundings and saturated green glow add atmosphere, while the £100 headline provides a direct visual hook for stories on prize incentives and gambling risk.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJ11XW - View of the Fratelli Torrisi On The Road Café sign at the Esso service station on Viale Generale Cannada in Barrafranca, central Sicily, Italy. The rectangular wall-mounted panel uses bold black lettering, flowing red script and a stylised roadway graphic to advertise the café within the roadside fuel and service complex.
The words Fratelli Torrisi appear across the upper section, while On the Road is written prominently in red above the large word Café . The visual combination of highway imagery and informal script creates branding aimed at drivers, travellers and local customers stopping for fuel, food or refreshments. The sign is fixed to the brown exterior facade beside a glazed entrance, presenting a clean and highly visible identity for the hospitality outlet.
The wider Esso Amoil On The Road site operates as more than a conventional filling station. Published business information describes facilities including a bar, tobacco counter, hot food, breakfast, aperitifs, lottery products, bill payments, telephone top-ups and other everyday services. The location is also listed as a parcel collection and dispatch point, illustrating how modern Italian service stations can function as multipurpose retail and community facilities.
Barrafranca is a municipality in the inland Sicilian territory of Enna, where private cars and road transport remain important for connecting towns, villages and rural areas. Roadside businesses of this kind provide useful stopping points for residents, commercial drivers and visitors travelling through the island's interior. The photograph records Italian petrol-station culture, café branding, local enterprise, convenience retailing and the infrastructure supporting road travel in Sicily. It also provides a clear editorial image of the distinctive On The Road Café identity at this established Barrafranca service area

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJYE - A Manchester Metrolink tram travels along the elevated rail corridor at Castlefield, passing through one of the city's most historically significant districts. The image was taken in summer daylight, with mild conditions and a partly cloudy sky providing even, reflective light across the modern skyline.
Castlefield is widely recognised as the birthplace of the industrial city, containing early canals, viaducts and railway infrastructure that powered Manchester's nineteenth-century growth. The tram route follows this historic transport axis, illustrating how industrial-era infrastructure continues to underpin contemporary urban movement.
In the background, clusters of glass and steel high-rise towers dominate the skyline, reflecting Manchester's rapid transformation into a high-density residential and commercial city. These developments form part of ongoing regeneration around Deansgate and the southern city centre, driven by population growth and inner-city living.
The Metrolink system, now integrated into the Bee Network under public control, represents a significant shift in English urban transport governance outside London. The image captures the intersection of heritage infrastructure, modern public transport and large-scale regeneration, making it well suited for editorial use covering sustainable transport, city-region devolution, urban development, regeneration and the evolving identity of post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8B3 - This carefully observed stock photograph records FirstBus 35545 LeedsCity WyMetro service 1 Beeston Line, on The Headrow, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, LS1 6PU. The row metadata places the subject at The Headrow, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, LS1 6PU. The spreadsheet date indicates 06 May 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows FirstBus, First Bus, bus, West Park, route, commuters, commuting, West Park Via Leeds City Centre, with search-relevant terms including FirstBus, First Bus, bus, West Park, route, commuters, commuting, West Park Via Leeds City Centre, mTicket, SK68TVJ, UK, England, transport, public. Transport pictures are especially useful because they show the infrastructure and passenger experience behind policy debates about connectivity, reliability and regional investment. Leeds is one of the major cities of Yorkshire, shaped by markets, textiles, banking, retail, universities, railway connections and a large modern service economy, making city-centre details useful for stories about northern growth and urban change. Transport images are useful because they show the lived reality behind policy debates about public transport, reliability, fares, regional connectivity, disabled access, climate goals, commuter patterns and the social value of buses and railways. The image can work as a lead picture, a supporting cutaway, a contextual inset or a visual metaphor for wider stories about place, services, consumer behaviour, heritage, transport, culture and public life. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T20EA5 - Taken on 14 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Russia Is a Terrorist State - Ukrainians in Birmingham city centre to protest the invasion of Ukraine by Putin of Russia, Victoria Square. The location is Victoria Square, Birmingham, England, B1 1BD. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. The protest reflects the continuing public response in British cities to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with Victoria Square used as a civic space for banners, solidarity and democratic expression. Tenant Satisfaction Measures have become part of the regulatory framework for social housing in England, giving the concept image relevance for landlords, councils, residents, scrutiny panels and data-quality stories. It can be used in editorial features, business reports, local-history writing, travel guides, public-policy explainers, educational material and SEO-led stock-photo searches needing a specific real-world image. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Birmingham, city, Victoria Square, protesters, banner, Russia Is a Terrorist State, Ukrainians, flags, war, invasion, centre, B1 1BD, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches.

Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East councils have successfully applied for a share of Bus Service Improvement Plan grants.
This comes after Arriva closed two of its depots - Winsford and Macclesfield - cutting many services in towns across the county before alternative operators stepped in to save some routes.
News of the successful application was given in Parliament after Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury posed the question to transport minister Richard Holden in Parliament.
Mr Amesbury said the cash was insufficient but praised ˜people power' for forcing Government to ˜cough up'.
The Labour MP said: While clearly nowhere near enough, it's better than nothing, which is precisely what Cheshire West received in the last round.
Government support is desperately needed because the Tories' free market bus system is not working.
Services have been lost in the Northwich and Runcorn parts of my constituency only recently.
Transport minister Mr Holden told the Commons: Every area which did not get Bus Service Improvement Plan money will be getting it this time, including across both Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester, and that's going to account to over £2.4 million, almost £2.5 million, for the local authorities to help them with bus services.
A campaign was launched following Arriva's decision to axe its Mid Cheshire services, with more than 7,500 people signing Mr Amesbury's joint petition with CWAC leader Louise Gittins.
He added: I've raised the issue of the dire state of our bus services with ministers on numerous occasions, conveying the strength of feeling in our area.
Is the message slowly starting to seep through? I believe Government has coughed up thanks to people power and stakeholders like my councillor colleagues arguing forcefully on behalf of their communities.

It is 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of the River Mersey, in the south-west part of historic Lancashire. The town was formerly within the historic county's ancient hundred of West Derby as a small settlement in the township of Windle. By the mid 1700s, it had become larger than Windle and (by 1838) it was formally made responsible for the administration of Windle and the three other townships of Eccleston, Parr and Sutton. In 1868, it was incorporated as a town with a municipal borough. The borough later became a county borough in 1887 and replaced by a metropolitan borough with an expanded administrative responsibility for nearby towns and villages in 1974.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0C1 - In the 19th Century due to suburbanization omnibuses became in to use and in 1869 were recorded running hourly on the Malone Road, Lisburn Road, Antrim Road, County Down Road to Sydenham hourly. Belfast is a now a relatively car-dependent city, by European standards, with an extensive road network including the ten lane M2 motorway. A recent survey of how people travel in Northern Ireland showed that people in Belfast made 77% of all journeys by car, 11% by public transport and 6% on foot. It also showed that Belfast has 0.70 cars per household compared to figures of 1.18 in the East and 1.14 in the West of Northern Ireland.
Most public transport in Northern Ireland is operated by the subsidiaries of Translink. Bus services in the city proper and the nearer suburbs are operated by Translink Metro, with services focusing on linking residential districts with the City Centre on twelve quality bus corridors running along main radial roads, resulting in poor connections between different suburban areas. More distant suburbs are served by Ulsterbus. A small number of private operators are also present, including Aircoach who operate a non-stop route from Belfast to Dublin City, via Dublin Airport which competes with services offered by Translink.
Black taxis are common in the city, operating on a share basis in some areas. Separate associations serving nationalist and unionist areas operate throughout Belfast. During the Troubles, nationalist taxi drivers in West Belfast and Ardoyne became targets for loyalist assassination campaigns. Today black taxis take tourists on tours of the city's sectarian murals. They are now outnumbered by private hire minicabs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC95RD - Deansgate-Castlefield is a tram stop on Greater Manchester's Metrolink light rail system, on Deansgate in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre. It opened on 27 April 1992 as G-Mex tram stop, taking its name from the adjacent G-Mex Centre, a concert, conference and exhibition venue
the G-Mex Centre was rebranded as Manchester Central in 2007, prompting the Metrolink stop to be renamed on 20 September 2010.[1] The station underwent redevelopment in 2014“15 to add an extra platform in preparation for the completion of the Second City Crossing in 2016“17.
Deansgate-Castlefield serves as a transport hub by integrating with National Rail services from Deansgate railway station by a footbridge. Exits from the station lead to the Great Northern Warehouse, the reconstructed Mamucium Roman Fort, the Beetham Tower, and Deansgate Locks. Part of Zone 1, the stop is one of the most used on the Metrolink network.
In August 2010 Metrolink announced it would be changing the name of the stop from 'G-Mex' to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'. On 2 September 2010, signs at the stop were changed to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'
a couple of days later temporary vinyl GMEX stickers were placed on top which were removed on 20 September 2010 when the name change was made.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XYA - Shoreditch High Street is a London Overground station located on Bethnal Green Road in Shoreditch in East London. It is served by the East London Line between Whitechapel and Hoxton with services running either to Dalston Junction, Highbury & Islington or New Cross, New Cross Gate, West Croydon, Crystal Palace, and is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Entrance to the station
The station officially opened to the public on 27 April 2010 and replaced nearby tube station Shoreditch, which was directly to the east and closed in 2006.
History
On the 1994 planning version of the underground map, the station was called 'Bishopsgate'.
In May 2008 Abdal Ullah, a Tower Hamlets London Borough Councillor, called for the new station to be renamed Banglatown, claiming this would better reflect the area in which it will stand, being a centre of the Bangladeshi community. However Transport for London noted that changing the name would cost £2 million and cause confusion. Councillor Ullah had previously campaigned to change the name of Aldgate East Underground station to Brick Lane
The station was built on the former site of the Eastern Counties Railway's Shoreditch station, built in 1840. The original station was later renamed Bishopsgate and converted for use as a goods yard. It was destroyed by fire in 1964 and remained derelict until being demolished in 2003“04, with the exception of a number of Grade II listed structures: ornamental gates on Shoreditch High Street and the remaining 850 feet (260 m) of the Braithwaite Viaduct, one of the oldest railway structures in the world and the second-oldest in London, designed by John Braithwaite.
The present station is built on upright supports as a viaduct, being fully enclosed in a concrete box structure. This is so future building works on the remainder of the Bishopsgate site can be undertaken keeping the station operational. Future buildings have the option of being constructed over the station.

It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDT2 - Battersea Power Station Pier stands on the south bank of the River Thames beside the redeveloped Battersea Power Station, with the famous chimneys rising behind the modern glass pier entrance. The image shows the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus stop that links the power station district with central London, Canary Wharf and other Thames piers. The pier's bold signage, glass canopy, railings and riverside setting make this a strong editorial photograph for stories about London river transport, Thames commuting, public transport interchange, urban regeneration, waterfront development, tourism and the transformation of the former industrial landmark into a major mixed-use destination. Thames Clippers lists Battersea Power Station Pier at Riverside Walk, Battersea, London, SW8 5BN, and describes it as accessible, with ticket machines and Oyster readers but no staffed ticket office. Battersea Power Station says Uber Boat by Thames Clippers runs river bus services between Putney and Barking Riverside, with journeys from the power station to Embankment, Blackfriars and Canary Wharf. The photograph is commercially useful for articles on the River Thames, sustainable city travel, river buses, visitor attractions, Battersea regeneration, transport-led development, London commuting, sightseeing, riverside architecture and the reuse of historic power station sites. The contrast between the sleek modern pier and the listed power station chimneys captures the way contemporary London transport infrastructure now sits beside revived industrial heritage. It can also illustrate the wider growth of Battersea as a shopping, leisure, office and residential destination, supported by river services, the Northern Line extension and improved public access to the Thames waterfront. As a documentary stock image, it records a recognisable transport gateway into one of London's most high-profile regeneration areas.

The original TransBus Enviro200 design was innovative but ultimately unsuccessful, with few being sold before the introduction of the second generation Enviro200 (originally referred to as the Enviro200 Dart) revived sales for the product from 2006. It was supposed to be positioned in between a minibus and a rigid single-decker bus.
The Enviro200 was originally designed to be the replacement for the Dennis Dart SLF chassis and Alexander ALX200 and Plaxton Pointer 2 bodies. The Enviro200 MMC was launched in 2014, eventually replacing the original Enviro200 and Enviro300, which went out of production in 2018 and 2016 respectively

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NBWGJ2 - Concept still life showing British pound banknotes and coins arranged around a paper label reading Pension , illustrating pension saving, workplace pension contributions and the investment of retirement money in England and Wales. The image uses familiar UK cash, including Bank of England notes and pound coins, to represent regular contributions into a pension pot, long-term saving, financial planning and retirement income. In defined contribution pensions, money paid by the worker, employer and tax relief is invested with the aim of building a fund for later life, although the value can rise or fall depending on markets and charges. UK workplace pension rules are based on automatic enrolment, where eligible employees are usually enrolled into a pension scheme and employers must contribute. Official guidance states that all employers must provide a workplace pension scheme, while MoneyHelper explains that the usual minimum total workplace pension contribution is 8%, commonly made up of employee contributions, government tax relief and an employer contribution. This image is useful for editorial and commercial themes including pensions, savings, retirement planning, personal finance, cost of living, investment risk, pension pots, employer contributions, financial advice, tax relief, pensions policy, household budgeting and long-term security. It can also illustrate debates about pension adequacy, low savings rates, ageing populations, retirement income gaps and whether workers are contributing enough for later life. The close-up arrangement of cash gives the photograph a simple, direct financial message without showing a person, making it suitable for articles, explainers, reports and web pages about pensions in England, Wales and the wider UK. The image should be treated as a general pension concept rather than advice about any specific pension product, provider or investment choice.

Customers say lives upended by ripped up schedules and woeful performance. More at https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/may/09/transpennine-express-awaits-contract-decision-amid-poor-service-record
Once, it seemed like a good idea to live in the Pennines and commute by train. Susannah Simmons, a violinist at Opera North, moved to Marsden for quick and easy access to her work in Leeds and Manchester. The service was far from perfect but satisfactory, she says. But for at least the past year nearly all trains I would have used have been cancelled or delayed, forcing me to drive everywhere.
Like countless others, her life has been upended by ripped-up schedules and woeful performance of TransPennine Express.
Ministers are expected to announce this week whether the operator will be replaced or awarded a fresh deal “ potentially for up to eight years.
Expectations are that TPE, owned by London-listed First Group “ the only remaining British transport firm operating passenger trains on the UK's privatised railway - will be given another chance to turn operations around, with a short extension of six to 12 months when its contract expires on 28 May.
But train failures are a potent political issue in the north. The announcement was withheld until after the local elections and the results of last week's vote “ and the potential for further backlash in red wall seats “ have given ministers further pause before renewing First's contract, according to a source close to the process.
MPs and mayors across the north have urged the government to get a grip after the operator's abysmal record of delayed, disrupted and cancelled services “ whose true extent was only officially confirmed after the regulator warned firms against concealing last-minute schedule changes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH9XEF - Taken on 27 Jan 2023, this photograph shows Wigan bus station, Market St, Wigan, Lancashire, England, UK, WN1 1HX. The location is Market St, Wigan, Lancashire, England, UK, WN1 1HX. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains platform, concourse or service signage details that place the railway scene in a real working transport environment. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Wigan, town, centre, Wigan bus station, Market Street, Market St, WN1, stands, stand, Bee Network, Lancs, Lancashire, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy papers and web features.

It is owned by DfT OLR Holdings for the Department for Transport (DfT), after the previous operator Arriva Rail North had its franchise terminated at the end of February 2020.
Northern Trains commenced operating the Northern franchise on 1 March 2020, taking over from Arriva Rail North. The prior operator had its franchise terminated early by the DfT in January 2020 amid widespread dissatisfaction over its performance, particularly in respect to poorly-implemented timetable changes. The DfT had opted to hand the operation of the franchise over to the operator of last resort. At the commencement of operations, Northern Trains publicly stated that its immediate aims were to improve service reliability and to proceed with the introduction of new rolling stock. For the latter, both the Class 195 diesel multiple units and Class 331 electric multiple units were brought into service fully during December 2020.
Services have been disrupted by wider events, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. Northern Trains is also being impacted by the 2022 United Kingdom railway strike, the largest national rail strike in the UK in three decades.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M369GH - Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops.
Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of £375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to £521 million. The final cost after delays was £776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. −‰Â£9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. The extended line is due to be operational by early 2023

It is the largest municipal bus company in the United Kingdom: the City of Edinburgh Council (through Transport for Edinburgh) owns 91%, Midlothian Council 5%, East Lothian Council 3% and West Lothian Council 1%.
Lothian operates the majority of bus services in Edinburgh, and is a significant operator in East Lothian, Midlothian and most recently West Lothian. It operates a comprehensive night bus network, three routes to Edinburgh Airport, and owns the subsidiary companies Lothian Country, East Coast Buses, Edinburgh Bus Tours and Lothian Motorcoaches.
Lothian Buses have operated a flat-fare system since March 2006.[16] Adult and child singles and day tickets, pre-paid multiple singles and 'Ridacards' are also available, with senior citizens travelling on free travel passes in line with the rest of Scotland. As of February 2020, an adult single fare is £1.80 and a child fare costs 90p. An adult day ticket costs £4.50 and a child day ticket £2.50.
Fares are paid into a hopper, which automatically dumps the money into a vault to which the driver has no access
change is not given.
The Lothian 'Ridacard' bus pass is a pre-paid plastic smartcard giving unlimited travel on regular daytime and night bus services, as well as Edinburgh Trams services. It is purchased initially from a Transport for Edinburgh Travelshop, where the owner's picture is incorporated on the card to prevent misuse. Once purchased, the card can be placed onto an on-board reader, which reads the contactless chip in the smartcard. Cards can be credited for a weekly, 4 weekly or annual period. A warning is displayed on the last five days of validity. The card can then be topped up at Transport for Edinburgh Travelshops or PayPoint equipped retailers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9G7 - Withdrawing the bus is withdrawing my independence' - residents speak out on Stagecoach bus cuts
A Gloucestershire bus route has officially been axed despite more than 600 people signing a petition to save it. Back in October 2022, Stagecoach said they would scrap a dozen routes across the county including the E bus which allows residents in the village of Woodmancote to travel into Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham.
In a notice posted at the main village bus stop, Stagecoach say: We regret that due to low passenger numbers, Service E will no longer run, and this bus stop will no longer be served by Stagecoach. For alternative travel, Stagecoach Service D buses will continue to run between Bishops Cleeve (Mill Parade), Cheltenham Town Centre and Hatherley with departures up to every 20-minutes, 7-days a week.
Fears rural people will become 'prisoners in their own homes' due to Gloucestershire bus cuts
'Not having a bus means they are literally imprisoned in their own homes, unable to walk or cycle because they are too old or too young or because it's so dangerous'
Rural Gloucestershire residents who rely on public transport are going to become prisoners in their own homes due to recently announced bus cuts. This is the view of Forest of Dean Councillor Chris McFarling (G, Sedbury) who raised several concerns at a Shire Hall meeting this week where transport chiefs gave an update on the situation affecting buses.
He thanked the cabinet member and officers for being honest about the problem they face after Stagecoach decided to withdraw from several routes due to a shortage of drivers. Cllr McFarling described the reality many bus users face across the county with buses simply not turning up or people being left stranded when their return journey is cancelled.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY564E - Manchester Victoria station in Manchester, England is a combined mainline railway station and Metrolink tram stop. Situated to the north of the city centre on Hunts Bank, close to Manchester Cathedral, it adjoins Manchester Arena which was constructed on part of the former station site in the 1990s. Opened in 1844 and part of the Manchester station group, Victoria is Manchester's third busiest railway station after Piccadilly and Oxford Road and the second busiest station managed by Northern after Oxford Road.
The station hosts local and regional services to destinations in Northern England, such as Blackburn, Rochdale, Bradford, Leeds, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Halifax, Wigan, Southport, Blackpool (Sundays only) and Liverpool using the original Liverpool to Manchester line. Most trains calling at Victoria are operated by Northern. TransPennine Express services call at the station from Liverpool to Newcastle/Scarborough and services towards Manchester Airport (via the Ordsall Chord) from Middlesbrough/Redcar/Newcastle.
Manchester Victoria is a major interchange for the Metrolink light rail system. Two former railway lines into the station have been converted to tram operation: the line to Bury was converted in the early 1990s, in the first phase of Metrolink construction, and the line through Oldham to Rochdale was converted during 2009“2014. In the other direction, trams switch to on-street running when they emerge from Victoria Station and continue southwards through the city centre to Piccadilly or Deansgate-Castlefield.

Some services link with Megatrain services, also operated by Stagecoach. Fares use a yield management model, formerly starting at £1. In June 2016, Stagecoach Group sold all operations in the European mainland, as well as those services linking London with Europe, to German competitor Flixbus. Megabus serves as a contractor, so the sale resulted in no route changes for passengers
Services from London to Oxford commenced on 4 August 2003, and from Edinburgh to Glasgow and Perth and Glasgow to Dundee were added one month later. During November 2003 routes from Manchester to Liverpool and Leeds were added, but these ceased on 27 June 2004 and 3 October 2004 respectively.
Advertised fares initially started at £1 with a 50p booking fee (raised to £1 in 2018), using a yield management model with the lowest fares offered for booking early and on less popular journeys. Typically, only the first six seats were sold at £1. As of 2018 however, the £1 fares have been withdrawn with references to them removed from the website and coach body advertising. Services often use out-of-town coachway interchanges to reduce delays caused by calling at interchanges in urban centres. Megatrain also follows the yield management model.
Tickets must be bought in advance via the Megabus website or by telephone, when passengers are given a reservation number that they show the driver when they board. The only services on which tickets can be bought on the vehicle are a small number of Scottish services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY558Y - Dugena is a German watch manufacturer, currently part of the EganaGoldpfeil group.
BEGINNING AS ALPINA GERMANY
The name Dugena is one of Germany's most famous watch brands. The roots of the company lie in Switzerland, namely with the Swiss watchmaker association Corporation d'Horlogers Suisse, which was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser. This was called Union Horlogère from 1901 and presented itself at this time with the brand name Alpina, which was first used as the name of a proprietary caliber.
RENAMING OF THE GERMAN ALPINA TO DUGENA
From about 1909, there is a branch in Glashütte, which bears the name Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina . 1917 the Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaker cooperative Alpina) is created by the concentration of the watch factories Biel-Geneva and Glashütte in Eisenach. 1927 their headquarters is moved to Berlin.
During World War II, the Allies prohibit the Union Horlogère to continue to market in Germany under the name Alpina . Therefore, 1942 in Berlin it is decided to rename Alpina into DUGENA - Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaking cooperative Alpina). As a unique trademark the circle in the triangle is chosen, under which the new brand achieves a high level of awareness.
GREAT SUCCESS AFTER THE WAR
1948, the headquarters of Dugena, which had been in the eastern part of Berlin, is moved to Darmstadt. Under the successful management of the director Willi Tempel Dugena becomes a byword for reliable and modern quality watches in West Germany.
The years of the Wirtschaftswunder (German economic miracle after the war) as well as the 1960s and the 1970s bring unparalleled success to the company. Both with ladies watches as with men's watches the brand gaines a considerable reputation. As one of only very few watch manufacturers Dugena is not affected by the quartz crisis, as it manages to establish itself with high quality quartz collections and is thereby open to new buyer generations. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JM9P4M - The service area was ready to open in 1967, but due to delays completing the M6, they didn't open it until 1970.
Hilton Park features a large tower structure which used by Top Rank to house a restaurant. It closed and has been empty since the 1980s.
It became the UK's busiest service area, and was an obvious target when Granada wanted to add retail units to the front of their service areas. These units have changed brands many times over the years, including being used as a Trucker's Lounge and Moto's first KFC. They are mostly closed now, though one is used by the Central Motorway Policing Group.
The southbound service area has a picnic area far from the main building, with its own car park, which most people miss because they're looking for the main facilities. It is a legacy feature of some older service areas and only actually has one table left. Most of the parking spaces have now been turned into a Tesla charging area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A8X - The Amhara genocide is an ongoing systematic massacre of ethnic Amhara and Agew people in Ethiopia since 1990. Large-scale killings and grave human rights violations followed the implementation of the ethnic-federalist system in the country. In most of the cases, the mass murders were silent with perpetrators from various ethno-militant groups” from Tigray TPLF or TDF, Oromo OLF“OLA, which are also known as Sene/Shane Oneg and the Gumuz armed groups. Ethnically motivated attacks against the Amhara have been reported, with mass graves continuously discovered in various locations. Many from the victim side stated that attempts to investigate and to uncovering data expose them to various forms of persecution. However, the results of two consecutive National Census Analyses and a report by the State revealed that over 2 million Amhara could not be traced. The figure reflects the decades-long massacres and enforced disappearances of the Amhara people. From the ongoing nature of the violence, the actual number is expected to be higher

A puffin crossing with nearside signals in Aviemore
A staggered set of pelican crossings with farside signals in Greenwich
Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPEK - Birmingham Coach Station (formerly Digbeth Coach Station) is a major coach interchange in Digbeth, Birmingham, England offering services to destinations throughout the island of Great Britain and also to Belfast and Dublin. National Express, the largest scheduled coach service provider in Europe, has its national headquarters on the site
The original interchange was built in 1929 as a bus depot by Midland Red, which was later converted into Digbeth Coach Station. Successor company Midland Red West used the coach station as a base for its Birmingham and Black Country operations. The original building was dark and dingy as it was not originally intended to serve passengers as a coach interchange.
Plans were initially developed for a new coach station on Great Charles Street, as Digbeth was considered by National Express to be an undesirable location. However, after the completion of the new Bullring and the planned Eastside redevelopment, it was decided to demolish the old structure and build a new coach station on the same site. Outline planning application for a design by Make Architects was submitted on behalf of National Express to Birmingham City Council in March 2006. However this option was abandoned in favour of a competing design by SBS Architects. The final planning application for the design by SBS Architects was submitted on 29 October 2007.
The old coach station closed in November 2007 for redevelopment and during reconstruction National Express used a temporary site in Oxford Street on the opposite side of Digbeth High Street, called Birmingham Central Coach Station. The refurbishment was estimated to have cost £15 million. It was officially reopened on 18 December 2009 by the England national football team manager Fabio Capello. The new station has been awarded a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

It serves the OVO Hydro, the SEC Centre and the SEC Armadillo which are accessible by adjoining footbridge from an island platform. The station suffers badly from congestion at concerts as most of Greater Glasgow can be reached from the station. There is a siding adjacent to Platform 2, that can be used as a turnback siding for trains terminating at Anderston or Glasgow Central Low Level. The line is served by Class 318s and Class 320s. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRN - Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the public body responsible for co-ordinating transport services throughout Greater Manchester in North West England. The organisation traces its origins to the Transport Act 1968, when the SELNEC (South East Lancashire/North East Cheshire) Passenger Transport Executive was established to co-ordinate public transport in and around Manchester. Between 1974 and 2011, it was known as the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE), until a reform of local government in Greater Manchester granted it more powers and prompted a corporate rebranding.[1] The strategies and policies of Transport for Greater Manchester are set by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and its Greater Manchester Transport Committee.
Transport for Greater Manchester is responsible for investments in improving transport services and facilities. It is the executive arm of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority which funds and makes policies for TfGM. The authority is made up of 33 councillors appointed from the ten Greater Manchester districts (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy FDNJR0 - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a light rail tram system in Greater Manchester, England. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP Group. In 2015/16, 34.3 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track, segregated from other traffic, often running alongside the roadway or in the central reservation, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system
the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had survived up to Metrolink's creation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR7 - On tapping or scanning their smartphone over the QR code or NFC tag to the right of the poster, a unique url will open in their phone's browser. If the campaign is mobile-platform enabled, this will lead straight to the advertiser's website or content
if not, they will be taken to a standard Clear Channel landing page. On a scroller or digital panel (where multiple advertisers are involved), on scanning or tapping, the consumer will be presented with a list of advertisers whose campaigns are mobile platform enabled for them to select from.
Near field communication (NFC) is a set of ideas and technologies that enable smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less. Each full NFC device can work in 3 modes: NFC target (acting like a credential), NFC initiator (as a reader) and NFC peer to peer. Most of the first business models like advertisement tags or other industrial applications have not been successful, always overtaken by another technology (3D barcodes, UHF tags, ...)
The main advantage of NFC is that NFC devices are often cloud connected. Connected credentials can be provisioned over the air unlike a standard card (Hotel or visitor applications). All connected NFC enabled smartphones can be provisioned with dedicated apps, which gives any application hundreds of millions of potential dedicated readers in opposition of the traditional dedicated infrastructure of ticket, access control or payment readers. All NFC peers can connect a third party NFC device with a server for any action or reconfiguration.

Sixty-seven is the 19th prime number (the next is 71), an irregular prime, a lucky prime, the sum of five consecutive primes (7 + 11 + 13 + 17 + 19), and a Heegner number.
Since 18! + 1 is divisible by 67, but 67 is not one more than a multiple of 18, 67 is a Pillai prime. 67 is the atomic number of holmium, a lanthanide.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG386Y - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle which serves as a traveling retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play ” outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street.
Ice cream vans are often brightly decorated and carry images of ice cream, or some other adornment, such as cartoon characters. They may have painted-on notices, which can serve a commercial purpose (Stop me and buy one!) or a more serious one (Don't Skid on a Kid!) - serving as a warning to passing motorists that children may run out into the road at the sight of the van, or appear without warning from behind it. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this is often covered with small pictures of the available products, with their associated prices.
A distinctive feature of ice cream vans is their melodic chimes, and often these take the form of a famous and recognizable tune, usually The Mister Softee Jingle, Turkey in the Straw, Do Your Ears Hang Low?, Pop Goes The Weasel The Entertainer, Music Box Dancer, Home on the Range, It's a Small World, Super Mario Bros. Theme or Camptown Races
or, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Greensleeves, Whistle While You Work in Crewe and Nantwich, You Are My Sunshine in Vale Royal, Teddy Bears' Picnic in Sheffield, and Match of the Day in other places.
In some places in the US, ice cream trucks play the song Ice Cream by Andre Nickatina (essentially just Turkey in the Straw with bass).

Because each pipe produces a single pitch, the pipes are provided in sets called ranks, each of which has a common timbre and volume throughout the keyboard compass. Most organs have many ranks of pipes of differing timbre, pitch, and volume that the player can employ singly or in combination through the use of controls called stops.

Everyone over 45 has probbaly got a copy of this. Everyone under should download it, as you will recognise most of the tracks.
Rumours is the eleventh studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac. Largely recorded in California during 1976, it was produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut and was released on 4 February 1977 by Warner Bros. Records. The record peaked at the top of both the main United States Billboard chart and the United Kingdom Albums Chart. 'Go Your Own Way', 'Don't Stop', 'Dreams', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles.
A Grammy Award winner, Rumours is Fleetwood Mac's most successful release with sales of over 40 million copies worldwide.
The band wanted to expand on the commercial success of the 1975 record Fleetwood Mac, but struggled with relationship breakups before recording started. The Rumours studio sessions were marked by hedonistic behaviour and interpersonal strife between Fleetwood Mac members
these experiences informed the album's lyrics. Influenced by pop music, the record's tracks were recorded using a combination of acoustic and electric instruments.
The mixing process delayed the completion of Rumours, but was finished by the end of 1976. Following the album's release in 1977, Fleetwood Mac undertook worldwide promotional tours.
Rumours garnered widespread critical acclaim. Praise centred on its production quality and harmonies, which frequently relied on the interplay among three vocalists. The record has inspired the work of musical acts in different genres. Often considered Fleetwood Mac's best release, it has featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 1970s and the best albums of all time.
In 2004, Rumours was remastered and reissued with the addition of an extra track and a bonus CD of outtakes from the recording sessions.
Its lyrics have provided me with inspiration at various times in my life, when I have needed to think about tomorrow. 'Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone. Don't you look back'. Wise advice.

The library is a great place to find romance (people tell me). A place to escape into a Mills &
Boon or a Jennifer Baker who does quite a few teen romances.
'Holly and Chris have fallen desperately in love. So much so that when their feuding families try to put a stop to their romance, they stake everything on their overwhelming feelings. They decide to run away and make a new life together'....
Nice to try from the library, maybe not something that you might buy from Amazon...
Just dont be caught leaving the library with one....

I found this a very interesting book and this lady very interesting as she told me she worked in the local Job Centre.
In David Cameroons 'Big Society' we will need to get our heads around the 'Non-Cash Reward'. There certainly will be limited or zero funds to support services that used to cost money.
The policy certainly has its critics. Labour leader Ed Miliband in February 2011 said Mr Cameron was undermining his own Big Society concept through spending cuts.
Various charity figures have suggested that the scale of local authority cuts could kill off the idea before it gets going - by 'destroying' existing voluntary groups.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu warned at one of his Sunday sermons, that investment in public services was needed if the Big Society was to succeed.
Norman Smith, BBC Radio4 had this comment:
The difficulty, it seems, he faces in getting his Big Society message over is that voters have rather more pressing matters on their mind.
After all, at a time of job losses, pay freezes, pension hikes and public service cuts - people may take the view that creating the Big Society is not very high on their list of priorities.
Somehow Mr Cameron has to convince voters it matters as much to them as it clearly does to him.
Merseyside television producer Phil Redmond has already attacked the 'big society' idea, saying it has been 'undermined by public spending cuts'.
The Brookside and Hollyoaks creator had originally been a fan of the concept, taking charge of a project involving volunteering and cultural activities in Liverpool.
He said: 'I do remain a strong supporter of the principle behind big society, because it wasn't too long ago that the media was full of stories about Big Brother, too much red tape, surveillance society, we need to get engaged with society and so on.
'It just came at the wrong moment.'
He said there was a need to make sure there was a separation between the big society plans and the cuts.

What an interesting book this chap had as he left the library. His face could be that of modern Britain. Getting older, we expect to have more over 60's soon than ever before, we also probably will be expected to work longer for smaller pensions on the whole.
In Britain we should be the best europeans of all, we have had everyone through here, at some point or another. Romans, Vikings, Normans etc. This book is the story of who we are and where we are from - the history of Britain through war and conquest, migration and racial integration.
The Welcome Trust has given a GBP2million grant to Oxford geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer to take DNA samples from hundreds of volunteers throughout Britain and find tell-tale fragments of DNA that reveal the biological traces of successive waves of colonisers - Celts, Saxons, Vikings, etc. - in various parts of Britain. These traces in part determine our facial features. In effect, this project will produce a genetic map of our islands revealing where today's Cornish or East Anglians originally came from.
The project is unique in that it uses cutting edge technology to question our accepted notions of our history. Added to this, the series and the book will meld science, history and personal stories to investigate our linguistic history, our surnames and placenames and compare findings with the results of the Bodmer study.Face of Britain will be a launch pad to explore Britain's earliest history while investigating why we look the way we do.

With the demise of the CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau), the local library can be the place people turn for advice. This can be for legal matters, health issues or finance.
A well stocked library can help everyone access the information they need. Books may not do the job for you, thats down to the borrower of course.
It would be interesting to see if the person this lady was taking these books out for, benifitted from them 3 weeks later when they were returned/renewed.

The local library is a place to learn more about where you live. I was not born here, ended up here more by practicality than choice.
Usually libraries have microfiche of newspapers going back many decades and can serve as archives of local history.
For a small town, commuter dormatory for Liverpool and Manchester, Warrington has its place in history. Two IRA bombs, the second claiming two childs lives left a dark shadow over the town.
The troubles in Warrington started on Thursday 25 February 1993. Three IRA terrorists broke into a Warrington gas storage depot. After planting Semtex bombs, the trio tried to escape and shot a patrolling police officer.
Most of their bombs failed to detonate, but one did blow up. Thankfully, nobody was injured. The three IRA men were arrested and Warrington believed its brush with terrorism had passed. They were wrong.
On Saturday 20 March 1993 another IRA unit took revenge on Warrington for the arrests three weeks earlier. It was the day before Mothering Sunday and stores in Bridge Street were bustling with shoppers. Two bombs, planted in waste bins, exploded within a minute of each other.
I was in Warrington that day. Luckily in Sainsburys when the bombs exploded. I visit Belfast a lot and I am pleased that the two communities can manage to agree to disagree in peace now. I regret the loss of the innocent lives of three year old Jonathan Ball and 12 year old Tim Parry, who only lived streets away from me.
I hope libraries stay open to spread the experience of this, as well as the victorian explorers who brought Egyptian mummies to the museum and the 1651 scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War. Our lives would be poorer for not knowing the history of the soil we tread on every day.

A cracking place for kids books and also those books of trains, ships and machines young lads always love. In my experience too, we ended up going home with the full quota of 8 books.
Books develop a childs imagination. I am convinced reading and writing is aided by having books around and having a diverse library of them on your doorstep. If you are lucky you might get a corner with Lego to fiddle with too.
Dora the Explorer is an American animated television series created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner. Dora the Explorer became a regular series in 2000. The show can be found on the Nickelodeon cable television network.
Dora, the main character, is a young 7-year-old latin american girl who embarks on a trip in every episode in order to find something or help somebody. She asks the viewers at home to help her find new ways to reach places with the help of Map. She also teaches viewers Spanish, introducing them to short words and phrases.
Dora is available in many languages as TV series and books. In each country she pairs the native language with English. For example in Russia, the bilingualism is Russian-English. The series is called Dasha-sledopyt ('Dasha the Pathfinder'). Dasha is the children's name of Daria (Darya).

You probably like me receive recommendations from Amazon and the like, introducing me to things to buy similar to the things I already have purchased. The effect of this is that we are recommended to listen to, watch or read more of the same.
In a library it is easy to walk in for a book on the Great Western Railway and walk out with a biography and a gluten free cook book as well, via the checkout desk (now fully computerised) of course.
I dont know if this man had been looking for this book, but his body language, holding this book at arms length revealed something extra. It is a racy title.
How did a 19 year-old, middle-class, Catholic girl from Munich become Hitler's mistress and what kept him faithful until the end of their lives? Was her appeal sexual, domestic, political - or did he really love her? Eva Anna Paula Hitler n\u00e9e Braun (6 February 1912 \u2013 30 April 1945) was the longtime companion of Adolf Hitler and for less than 40 hours, his wife.
Braun met Hitler in Munich when she was 17 years old while working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer and began seeing him often about two years later. By 1936 she was a part of his household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden and by all accounts lived a materially luxurious and sheltered life throughout World War II.
She was quite racy by all accounts and enjoyed make-up and nude sunbathing.
As the Third Reich collapsed towards the end of the war, Braun swore her loyalty to Hitler and went to Berlin to be by his side in the heavily reinforced F\u00fchrerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. As Red Army troops fought their way into the neighbourhood on 29 April 1945, she married Hitler during a brief civil ceremony: she was 33 and he 56. Less than 40 hours later they committed suicide together in a sitting room of the bunker, she by biting into a capsule of cyanide.
Strangely, the German public was wholly unaware of Braun until after her death. You would need several super injunctions these days to manage that!

Libraries can be a great place to lose yourself. Perhaps in a distant place or at a crimescene. Maybe a murder, or even commit one.
I am alway surprised at the fiction reading matter that the most unlikely people enjoy. With the choice on offer, you can easily spend a few decades reading one section of your local library, for free. Alternatively, flurt about around genres.
Lynda La Plante, CBE (actually born Lynda J. Titchmarsh on 15 March 1943) is an English author, screenwriter and former actress, best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series.
La Plante's father was a salesman in Liverpool. She attended RADA and began her career as an actress, mainly on television. As Lynda Marchal, she appeared in several popular series including Z-Cars, The Sweeney, The Professionals and Bergerac. However as an actress she is perhaps best remembered as the hay-fever suffering ghost Tamara Novek in the BBC children's series Rentaghost.
She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995).
The name 'La Plante' comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s.

I had a long chat with this chap. His father had played football with the opposition during the war and that is why he selected this book ( Soccer at War: The Complete Record of British Football and Footballers During the Second World War) on this day.
'Soccer at War' is the compelling account of the national game during this defining moment in history. Rollin reveals how it was that football not only continued to be played and watched, but also grew in popularity and stature. He explains how, while the country fought for freedom, the sport offered morale-boosting appeal to war workers, servicemen, and civilians alike.
It tells of the hundreds of professional footballers who joined up, those who became heroes, and those who did not come back, the enthusiasts who administered the game in their spare time, and the players who turned out for thirty bob a week. The servicemen who went AWOL to play and others who hitch-hiked just to get to a game also find their place in the story, along with the record-breaking goalscoring achievements. Looking further afield to occupied Europe, 'Soccer at War' also exposes the role of football in Hitler's regime.

The traditional library was always a place you could find a good textbook. Today often the internet is touted as a replacement for good quality text books.
The Internet is very much like television in that it takes time away from other pursuits, provides entertainment and information, but in no way can compare with the warm, personal experience of reading a good book. This is not the only reason why the Internet will never replace books, for books provide the in-depth knowledge of a subject that sitting in front of a computer monitor cannot provide.
In an increasingly rushed and hurried world, the sound-bite is becoming the currency of knowledge rather than in-depth experience, only obtained by research, study, seeing and doing. The internet is being often used as an excuse to stock less textbooks in libraries.

Libraries can be seen as a place of keeping silent and cautious study. Its also a place of hilarity and comedy. I have had all kinds of frivolity out of mine, including Goon Show scripts, Monty Python, The Bob Monkhouse biography, Not The Nine O Clock News and The Truth About Chuck Norris. The last one a book that could well change your life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23KC - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.
Most seen these days are copies. Most do not include the CL of Chadburn Liverpool which was the place of manufacture, as in this specimen h

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4653594686 - 'This is an image taken in the first floor historic reading room of the Manchester University John Rylands library. This serves as the special Collections section of the John Rylands University Library (JRUL). It is a remarkable victorian gothic building right in the heart of the city's shopping district Deansgate.
The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands. The collections include medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing, including the Gutenberg Bible, and the personal papers of notable local figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and chemist John Dalton.
Enriqueta Rylands purchased a site on Deansgate, at the heart of Manchester city centre, in 1889 for her planned memorial library and commissioned a design from architect Basil Champneys. Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, which is a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church, although the actual concept was of an Oxford college library on a larger scale.
The core of the library was formed around the collection of 40,000 books including many rarities assembled by George John Spencer, which Mrs Rylands purchased in 1892. The library was finally opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It was illuminated internally by electricity (rather than gas which was more common at the time). The use of electricity was still in its early stages, the supply had to be generated on-site. This took some years to achieve due to the inexperience of local contractors, but the library became one of the first public buildings in Manchester to be lit by electricity and continued to generate its own supply until 1950.
Basil Champneys was given the rare honour of speaking about the building at a general meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1912. The library was granted listed building status on 25 January 1952, which was upgraded to Grade I on 6 June 1994.
In the Rylands Gallery on the lower floor, you can see some of the most important items from the Library's collections including magnificent medieval manuscripts and examples of the earliest books ever printed. The gallery is organized around seven themes. Faiths, History of the Bible, Beautiful Books, Science, World Literatures, Everyday Life and Manchester.
It is one of Manchester's building gems and inside more resembles a cathedral than a library. Marble statues of Enriqueta and John Rylands watch over the readers from either end of the room. If you are in the city, make an excuse to spend some time to drink in the history.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4656685501 - 'Here is a reader in The John Rylands Library, a Victorian Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester and part of Manchester University. The library is a grand historical place to study with the smell of books all around. There are many collections here, but you will be as welcome if you bring in Martin Amis or Dan Brown.
The foundations of the Library's collections were the Althorp Library of Lord Spencer (yes that one!), acquired in 1892 and a part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana purchased from James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford in 1901. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana was one of the most impressive private collections in Britain at the time, both for its size and for the rarity of some of the materials it contained. The manuscript collections (including Chinese and Japanese printed books) were sold in 1901 to Mrs. Rylands for the John Rylands Library.
The collections include exquisite medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing including the Gutenberg Bible, as well as the personal papers of distinguished historical figures including Elizabeth Gaskell, John Dalton and John Wesley. The library also houses the papyrus fragments known as the Rylands Papyri and documents from North Africa. The most notable of these are the so-called St John Fragment, believed to be the oldest extant New Testament document., Rylands Library Papyrus P52, the earliest fragment of the canonical Gospel of John text and Papyrus Rylands 463, a manuscript fragment of the apocryphal Gospel of Mary. The collection of incunabula numbers about 4,500.
In a nod to Irene Royal and Ann Brown, librarians I see very infrequently, there have been many important staff associated with the collection.
Librarians at John Rylands before its merger include Edward Gordon Duff in 1899 and 1900 and Henry Guppy between 1899 and 1948 (joint Librarian with Duff until 1900). Duff was responsible for the original library catalogue, compiled between 1893 and 1899: Catalogue of the Printed Books and Manuscripts in the John Rylands Library, Manchester
ed. E. G. Duff. Manchester: J. E. Cornish, 1899. 3 vols.
Dr Guppy began publication of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library in 1903
it later became a journal publishing academic articles and from autumn 1972 the title was changed to the Bulletin of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester (further slight changes have occurred since).[30] Other noteworthy members of staff were James Rendel Harris, Alphonse Mingana, the Semitic scholar Professor Edward Robertson (d. 1964) who was the third librarian, and Moses Tyson, keeper of western manuscripts, afterwards librarian of Manchester University Library

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBCH - The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, most notably several generations of public transport ticket machines and the worlds first desktop electronic calculator, the Sumlock ANITA.
History
The company was established in July 1878 in order to acquire the patent rights to an American hand-registering ticket punch that was being used by a number of British tramway companies. By 1884 they had begun development of their own range of ticket printing machines. In 1891 they began supplying ticketing machines for London General Omnibus Company. From then until its demise, Bell Punch would have an unbroken history of supplying successive London bus companies, along with many other bus operators throughout the country.
The first half of the 20th century saw the company expand into different markets, including in cinema and theatre ticketing, horse race totalisator ticket machines, taximeters and mechanical calculators.
In the Second World War the company developed and manufactured a variety of military equipment, including mechanical aircraft navigation computers and naval gunnery sighting and ranging devices.
In 1958 it began development of a desktop electronic calculator, which came to market as the Sumlock ANITA in 1961. The calculator division was established as Sumlock Anita Electronics Ltd in 1966. It was to become the largest supplier of calculators in the U.K., with sales of £4.5 million in 1971. In 1972 they developed one of the first electronic pocket calculators, but were beaten to the market by Sinclair Radionics due to lack of management enthusiasm for the project. In 1973 Sumlock Anita Electronics were acquired by Rockwell International who closed down the operation in 1976.
The remainder of the business continued to be owned by the then parent company, Control Systems Ltd which was acquired the Swedish Incentive Group in the early 1980s which resulted in the break-up of the company

I have been a regular customer of Ron (of Ron Snax, Outside catering available 01827-706191) for some time. The mis-spelt pricelist notwithstanding (Turkcy), he does a cracking job. \u00a32.40 buys you a bagette the size of two fists, packed with fried goodness. My only gripe is that he doesn't do black pudding, but that has never stopped me calling there. His litre of steaming tea or coffee also blows Costa away.
Rons does barms and soft bagettes. It always amazes me how short a distance you need to travel, for bread names to change so dramatically. It could be a bread-cake, teacake (obviously without fruit), a sub, barm, breadbun, cob, stotty, scone, buttery, flour cake or muffin. Using the wrong one can lead to a lot of confusion. Any more bread styles you know from across Britain, please leave a comment and let me know.
The old 'Greasy Spoon' in my opinion gets an unfair press. Wikipedia defines it as:
'Greasy spoon is a colloquial or slang term used in Britain, Ireland and North America for small, especially cheap, archetypal working class restaurants or diners. The name 'greasy spoon' is used to imply a less-than-rigorous approach to hygiene and dishwashing, and appears in use in the early 20th century'.
There have been a few stories, mainly hoaxes based on ficticious EU reports about eating habits of long distance drivers and their health. As any truck driver knows, the greatest hazard is infact 'Truck drivers testicle' caused by vibrations encountered over time from sitting over the tractor unit engine.
Thankfully, Rons position appears safe, although he did tell me that a new rating system is apparently coming in. So look out for his star rating, next time you are on the A46. Tell him HotpixUK sent you!

Manchesters second smallest boozer, with room for approximately twenty people including the feisty bar maid. The kind of venue where the music would stop when you walked in - that's if they had room for speakers - but within half an hour you'd be on first name terms with the regulars.
Not exactly a vast array of cocktails (This is more for the beer drinkers and G&T lovers) this is a bar that you hope will stay in Manchester for ever. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF2205 - A trolley of birthday cakes in a UK Tesco store.
A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearby”even transnationally”thus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEXEGY - The Lowry is a theatre and gallery complex situated on Pier 8 at Salford Quays, in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. It is named after the early 20th-century painter, L. S. Lowry, known for his paintings of industrial scenes in North West England. The complex was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II
To redevelop the derelict Manchester Docks, Salford City Council developed a regeneration plan in 1988 for the brownfield site highlighting the leisure, cultural and tourism potential of the area, and included a flagship development that would involve the creation of a performing arts centre. The initial proposals were for two theatres and an art gallery on a prominent site on Pier 8.
Between 1990 and 1991 a competition was launched and architects James Stirling Michael Wilford Associates was selected. After the death of James Stirling in June 1992 Michael Wilford continued the project.
The city council bid for Millennium and other British and European funds and private sector finance to progress the project. Funding was secured in 1996 and The Lowry Trust became responsible for the project which comprised The Lowry Centre, the plaza, a footbridge, a retail outlet shopping mall and Digital World Centre. The National Lottery provided over £21 million of funding towards its construction. The project was completed in 1999 at a cost of £106 million. The Lowry name was adopted in honour of the local artist, L. S. Lowry.
The complex is close to the Imperial War Museum North and the Old Trafford football stadium. It is served by the MediaCityUK stop on the Metrolink tram network. In 2010 and 2011 it was Greater Manchester's most visited tourist attraction.[5] A sting operation by the Salford Star in 2006 attempted to demonstrate intolerance towards unaccompanied teenagers in hoodies entering the complex

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.
If you have had any thoughts when passing this, please leave a comment.

Streets like a jungle......
'Boys and girls' was the lead single from the 'Park Life' album. It was Blur's first top 5 UK hit and most successful single until 'Country House' reached number 1 the following year. The single was seen as a comeback for the band, who had had a lean commercial period for a couple of years. The song surpassed the band's previous commercial peak 'There's No Other Way' by three spots on the UK Singles Chart.
The video, directed by 10cc's Kevin Godley, featured Blur performing the song against a bluescreen backdrop of documentary footage people on 18-30 package holidays. Godley branded the video as 'Page 3 rubbish' while Blur found it 'perfect'. The front cover of the single was taken from a pack of Durex condoms.
In 1994, the song was named single of the year by NME and Melody Maker in the UK. It was also nominated for best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Everyone should own at least one Blur album, my choice would be the 'Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur'. Track it down, tell 'em I sent you.

Manchester has a wealth of LGBT culture and activities. The sitcom drama 'Queer as folk' was set in the Canal St area of the city. 20th century broadcaster and social commentator Brian Redhead once said 'Manchester ... is the capital, in every sense, of the North of England, where the modern world was born. The people know their geography is without equal. Their history is their response to it'. Whilst Ian Brown of the Stone Roses has previously said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach' (er.. top man, bob-on!).
Manchester has claimed to have the UK's largest gay population outside of London. Gay Village, centred on the Canal Street area, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. On the last weekend in August it hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention on television series Queer as Folk and Coronation Street. It is also the birthplace of several gay rights organisations including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Queer Youth Alliance, The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation.
Manchester has its own gay sports teams, Village Manchester FC (soccer), Northern Wave (swimming) and Village Spartans (Rugby) which take part in Manchester's annual Pride Games. In the 1990s Manchester City Council gave support to the establishment of a gay centre and employed four lesbians and gay men to help implement their equal opportunity policy. Their work continued in spite of Section 28 and the City Council actively supported the Mardi Gras and other gay events.
The year round gay and lesbian heritage trail exhibits Manchester's gay history. In 2003, Manchester played host city to the annual Europride festival. The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation, Britain's biggest gay charity, is based on Richmond Street in the city centre. Manchester Metropolitan University has been named the most gay friendly university in the UK.
One of these weekends, hop on a Richard Branson Virgin Train and feel welcome to come check us out!

The second-generation Eclipse 2 was launched in 2008, followed by the third-generation Eclipse 3 in 2015. The Eclipse, and its sister design the Solar, were named for a solar eclipse which was visible in the UK in 1999, the year of its introduction.
The Eclipse was launched in 1999 on Volvo B7L chassis and, in 2003, the body was made available on the more popular Volvo B7RLE chassis. A coach version, the Eclipse SchoolRun, was later launched on high floor Volvo B7R chassis. In November 2008, Wright unveiled the Eclipse 2 at that year's Euro Bus Expo, with front and rear ends facelifted to match the Wright StreetCar. In 2015, the Eclipse 3 was launched on Volvo B8RLE chassis, the successor to the B7RLE. Production of the Eclipse has been suspended as Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.
Over 2,100 Eclipses were built, with FirstGroup the largest customer. A double-decker version of the Eclipse is also available, known as the Wright Eclipse Gemini, and formerly also an articulated version, the Wright Eclipse Fusion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B6C - Knightsbridge station London Underground subway England UK works as a grounded stock photograph because the subject is specific, legible and connected to wider social, economic or cultural themes. London Underground scenes are shorthand for the capital's density, speed and dependence on mass transit, whether shown as a busy carriage, station entrance or platform environment. The subject suits stories about commuting, crowding, safety, fare policy, accessibility, tourism, night-time travel and the tension between historic infrastructure and modern passenger demand. Low light, dusk or night conditions add atmosphere and make the subject useful for evening economy, safety and seasonal weather contexts. The location detail, London, Knightsbridge, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include railway station, passenger rail, train travel and public transport, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. The scene has practical value for features needing authentic British or international street-level evidence, especially where policy, culture, business, tourism or social change is easier to explain through one clear example.
