Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRX - This photograph shows Platform B at the Piccadilly Metrolink stop in Manchester city centre, part of the city's extensive light rail network operated by Manchester Metrolink. The bright yellow platform signage clearly indicates eastbound services to Ashton under Lyne and the Etihad Campus, two key destinations on the eastern side of Greater Manchester.
The image highlights the clean, functional design of the Metrolink system, with high contrast signage, tactile surfaces, and yellow safety rails supporting accessibility and passenger safety. Piccadilly Metrolink forms a major interchange point, linking tram services with Manchester Piccadilly railway station, buses, and wider city centre travel routes.
Metrolink plays a central role in Manchester's public transport network, supporting daily commuting, leisure travel, and access to major employment, residential, and sporting destinations. The reference to the Etihad Campus underlines the system's importance during major events, including football matches and concerts, while the Ashton under Lyne route serves a mix of town centre, residential, and commercial areas.
Taken indoors under artificial lighting, the photograph functions as both a documentary record of modern urban transport infrastructure and a practical illustration of wayfinding design in a busy metropolitan transit system. It reflects Manchester's long term investment in light rail as a sustainable alternative to private car use and a core element of city region connectivity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJYE - A Manchester Metrolink tram travels along the elevated rail corridor at Castlefield, passing through one of the city's most historically significant districts. The image was taken in summer daylight, with mild conditions and a partly cloudy sky providing even, reflective light across the modern skyline.
Castlefield is widely recognised as the birthplace of the industrial city, containing early canals, viaducts and railway infrastructure that powered Manchester's nineteenth-century growth. The tram route follows this historic transport axis, illustrating how industrial-era infrastructure continues to underpin contemporary urban movement.
In the background, clusters of glass and steel high-rise towers dominate the skyline, reflecting Manchester's rapid transformation into a high-density residential and commercial city. These developments form part of ongoing regeneration around Deansgate and the southern city centre, driven by population growth and inner-city living.
The Metrolink system, now integrated into the Bee Network under public control, represents a significant shift in English urban transport governance outside London. The image captures the intersection of heritage infrastructure, modern public transport and large-scale regeneration, making it well suited for editorial use covering sustainable transport, city-region devolution, urban development, regeneration and the evolving identity of post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK21 - An elevated pedestrian walkway at Castlefield, Manchester, providing a direct connection between the Metrolink tram network and National Rail services at Deansgate Station. The image was taken on a warm summer evening, with clear blue skies and strong, low-angle sunlight creating a calm, open atmosphere across the city centre.
Castlefield is widely regarded as the birthplace of the industrial city, home to some of the world's earliest canals, railway infrastructure and surviving Victorian warehouses. Deansgate Station itself, formerly known as Knott Mill, has served rail passengers since the nineteenth century and remains an important gateway between Manchester's historic industrial core and its modern city centre.
The steel-framed walkway represents a contemporary layer in this long transport history, designed to support sustainable urban movement and seamless interchange between tram, rail and pedestrian routes. From the bridge, the view opens towards Manchester's rapidly expanding skyline, where clusters of glass and steel residential towers now dominate the horizon, reflecting the city's shift towards high-density urban living.
The contrast between the heavy industrial heritage of Castlefield, the red-brick railway buildings below, and the modern skyscrapers beyond encapsulates Manchester's continuing evolution. In summer conditions such as these, the walkway functions not only as vital infrastructure but also as a vantage point over a city shaped by transport, regeneration and reinvention. The image is well suited to editorial use covering urban development, public transport integration, regeneration, sustainable mobility and the lived experience of contemporary British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2K - A weathered bus stop sign for Murton Village photographed on Murton Lane in the village of Murton, near York, North Yorkshire, England. The sign features the traditional bus symbol and the City of York crest mounted above the pole, identifying the stop as part of the local authority-managed public transport network.
Murton is a small rural village located to the east of the city of York, surrounded by agricultural land and characterised by a close-knit community and limited local services. Bus stops such as this provide an essential connection between rural settlements and nearby urban centres, supporting access to employment, education, healthcare, and shopping.
Rural bus services in North Yorkshire have faced increasing pressure in recent years due to funding constraints, changing travel patterns, and population shifts. As a result, village bus stops like Murton's have become symbolic of wider debates around rural mobility, social inclusion, and the sustainability of public transport outside major towns and cities.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating rural transport in England, village life, public transport infrastructure, accessibility issues, community services, countryside living, and the challenges and importance of maintaining bus services in rural areas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWW5RJ - Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
Trump won the 2016 presidential election as the Republican nominee against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while losing the popular vote. During the campaign, his political positions were described as populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist. His election and policies sparked numerous protests. He was the first U.S. president with no prior military or government service. The 2017?2019 special counsel investigation established that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to favor his campaign. Trump promoted conspiracy theories and made many false and misleading statements during his campaigns and presidency, to a degree unprecedented in American politics. Many of his comments and actions have been characterized as racially charged or racist and many as misogynistic

Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East councils have successfully applied for a share of Bus Service Improvement Plan grants.
This comes after Arriva closed two of its depots - Winsford and Macclesfield - cutting many services in towns across the county before alternative operators stepped in to save some routes.
News of the successful application was given in Parliament after Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury posed the question to transport minister Richard Holden in Parliament.
Mr Amesbury said the cash was insufficient but praised ?people power' for forcing Government to ?cough up'.
The Labour MP said: While clearly nowhere near enough, it's better than nothing, which is precisely what Cheshire West received in the last round.
Government support is desperately needed because the Tories' free market bus system is not working.
Services have been lost in the Northwich and Runcorn parts of my constituency only recently.
Transport minister Mr Holden told the Commons: Every area which did not get Bus Service Improvement Plan money will be getting it this time, including across both Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester, and that's going to account to over ?2.4 million, almost ?2.5 million, for the local authorities to help them with bus services.
A campaign was launched following Arriva's decision to axe its Mid Cheshire services, with more than 7,500 people signing Mr Amesbury's joint petition with CWAC leader Louise Gittins.
He added: I've raised the issue of the dire state of our bus services with ministers on numerous occasions, conveying the strength of feeling in our area.
Is the message slowly starting to seep through? I believe Government has coughed up thanks to people power and stakeholders like my councillor colleagues arguing forcefully on behalf of their communities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0C1 - In the 19th Century due to suburbanization omnibuses became in to use and in 1869 were recorded running hourly on the Malone Road, Lisburn Road, Antrim Road, County Down Road to Sydenham hourly. Belfast is a now a relatively car-dependent city, by European standards, with an extensive road network including the ten lane M2 motorway. A recent survey of how people travel in Northern Ireland showed that people in Belfast made 77% of all journeys by car, 11% by public transport and 6% on foot. It also showed that Belfast has 0.70 cars per household compared to figures of 1.18 in the East and 1.14 in the West of Northern Ireland.
Most public transport in Northern Ireland is operated by the subsidiaries of Translink. Bus services in the city proper and the nearer suburbs are operated by Translink Metro, with services focusing on linking residential districts with the City Centre on twelve quality bus corridors running along main radial roads, resulting in poor connections between different suburban areas. More distant suburbs are served by Ulsterbus. A small number of private operators are also present, including Aircoach who operate a non-stop route from Belfast to Dublin City, via Dublin Airport which competes with services offered by Translink.
Black taxis are common in the city, operating on a share basis in some areas. Separate associations serving nationalist and unionist areas operate throughout Belfast. During the Troubles, nationalist taxi drivers in West Belfast and Ardoyne became targets for loyalist assassination campaigns. Today black taxis take tourists on tours of the city's sectarian murals. They are now outnumbered by private hire minicabs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC95RD - Deansgate-Castlefield is a tram stop on Greater Manchester's Metrolink light rail system, on Deansgate in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre. It opened on 27 April 1992 as G-Mex tram stop, taking its name from the adjacent G-Mex Centre, a concert, conference and exhibition venue
the G-Mex Centre was rebranded as Manchester Central in 2007, prompting the Metrolink stop to be renamed on 20 September 2010.[1] The station underwent redevelopment in 2014?15 to add an extra platform in preparation for the completion of the Second City Crossing in 2016?17.
Deansgate-Castlefield serves as a transport hub by integrating with National Rail services from Deansgate railway station by a footbridge. Exits from the station lead to the Great Northern Warehouse, the reconstructed Mamucium Roman Fort, the Beetham Tower, and Deansgate Locks. Part of Zone 1, the stop is one of the most used on the Metrolink network.
In August 2010 Metrolink announced it would be changing the name of the stop from 'G-Mex' to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'. On 2 September 2010, signs at the stop were changed to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'
a couple of days later temporary vinyl GMEX stickers were placed on top which were removed on 20 September 2010 when the name change was made.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64N03 - East Midlands Railway's special Rainbow Train celebrates Belper and Derby Pride
A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow ?swoosh' livery also features the tagline ?Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3Y98N - A liquor store is a retail business that predominantly sells prepackaged liquors (typically in bottles), wine or beer, usually intended to be consumed off the store's premises. Depending on region and local idiom, they may also be called an off-licence (in the UK and Ireland), off-sale (in parts of Canada and the US), bottle shop, bottle store or, colloquially, bottle-o (in Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada), liquor store (in Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand) or other similar terms. A very limited number of jurisdictions have an alcohol monopoly. In US states that are alcoholic beverage control (ABC) states, the term ABC store may be used.
The Twenty-first Amendment of the United States Constitution allows states to regulate the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. State regulations vary widely. The majority of the U.S. states have laws specifying which alcoholic beverages must be sold in specialty liquor stores and which may be sold in other venues.
In seventeen alcoholic beverage control (ABC) states, the specialty liquor stores are owned and operated exclusively by the state government, where liquor stores often sell only spirits or sometimes sell spirits and wine but not beer. ABC-run stores may be called ABC stores or state stores.
In Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Texas, liquor stores are also known as package stores
locally in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and areas bordering these states the term pack or packie is used as well, because purchased liquor must be packaged in sealed bottles or other containers when it is taken from the store
In three states (Kansas, Minnesota, and Utah), only low-point beer may be sold in supermarkets or gas stations. In Utah, stores not owned and operated by the state are known as Package Agencies. These are liquor outlets operated by private individuals or corporate entities under contract with the state for the purpose of selling packaged liquor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDPH - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7N - This dramatic black and white photograph shows an upward, low-angle view of Battersea Power Station, one of London's most powerful and recognisable industrial landmarks. The composition exaggerates the scale of the structure, with two of the iconic chimneys rising sharply into a turbulent sky, creating a sense of dominance, weight, and authority.
Built in the 20th century as a coal-fired power station, Battersea once supplied electricity to much of London and became a symbol of industrial strength and state power. The stark monochrome treatment strips away modern distractions, allowing the viewer to focus on texture, mass, and geometry. Heavy brickwork, vertical lines, and symmetry reinforce the building's imposing presence, while cloud formations heighten the atmosphere and drama.
Beyond its architectural importance, Battersea Power Station holds deep cultural significance due to its appearance on the cover of Animals by Pink Floyd, where an inflatable pig was famously flown between the chimneys. That image transformed the building into a global symbol of political critique, capitalism, and institutional power, linking industrial architecture with protest art and music history.
Now extensively redeveloped, the site stands at the intersection of heritage and regeneration, embodying both Britain's industrial past and its post-industrial transformation. This image, with its stark contrasts and confrontational viewpoint, is particularly well suited to editorial use exploring themes of power, industry, urban change, cultural memory, architecture, and the visual language of dissent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A448 - Richard Morris Titmuss CBE FBA (1907?1973) was a pioneering British social researcher and teacher. He founded the academic discipline of social administration (now largely known in universities as social policy) and held the founding chair in the subject at the London School of Economics.
His books and articles of the 1950s helped to define the characteristics of Britain's post World War II welfare state and of a universal welfare society, in ways that parallel the contributions of Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal in Sweden. He is honoured in the Richard Titmuss Chair in Social Policy at the LSE, which is currently held by Julian Le Grand.
Titmuss's association with eugenics extended beyond the British Eugenics Society, to encompass other personal and intellectual connections.
He is also honoured by the annual Richard Titmuss Memorial Lecture in the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
At the LSE, where he was the first professor of Social Administration, he transformed the teaching of social work and social workers and established Social Policy as an academic discipline. He also contributed to a number of government committees on the health service and social policy. He also did some consulting in Africa, sometimes together with Professor Brian Abel-Smith, who was later his successor in his chair.
His concerns focused especially on issues of social justice. His final and perhaps the most important book, The Gift Relationship expressed his own philosophy of altruism in social and health policy and, like much of his work, emphasized his preference for the values of public service over private or commercial forms of care. The book was influential and resulted in a study of the blood bank systems, specifically with regard to regulation on the private blood market exchange. President Nixon called for a complete study of the lack of coordination within the system only months following publication of Titmuss' findings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNG8 - This image shows a painted Cheshire Cat artwork displayed on a bus stop shelter on Wilderspool Causeway in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA4 1AD), close to the Causeway Hotel. The illustration forms part of local visual identity and public art initiatives that bring character and humour to everyday urban infrastructure.
The Cheshire Cat is a well-known fictional character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, who was born in nearby Daresbury, Cheshire. Its use in public artwork across the county has become a recognisable symbol of regional identity, often appearing in murals, sculptures, and street art installations.
In this scene, the smiling cat is painted directly onto the blue bus shelter panel beneath official transport signage indicating services toward Warrington Bank Quay Station interchange. The contrast between functional transport information and playful artwork highlights efforts to humanise public spaces and improve the everyday experience of commuters.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding brick buildings and railings visible, the image is well suited to editorial use covering public art, local identity, community placemaking, transport environments, and the integration of cultural references into ordinary street scenes in towns such as Warrington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TX3 - A bus stop sign displaying local bus route information in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The sign carries WY Metro branding and provides details of services running towards Blackshaw Head and Hebden Bridge, illustrating the role of scheduled bus transport in connecting rural Pennine communities.
Public transport signage such as this forms a vital part of everyday infrastructure in villages where access to private vehicles may be limited. Bus services linking Heptonstall with nearby settlements and rail connections help support employment, education, healthcare access, and social inclusion, particularly for older residents and those without cars.
The sign is mounted on a metal pole against a blue sky with light cloud, with overhead utility lines visible, reinforcing the rural village setting. The clear presentation of destinations and service information reflects the standardised approach to transport information across West Yorkshire.
Photographed in daylight, the image works as an editorial illustration of rural public transport, community connectivity, and the practical realities of mobility in Yorkshire villages.

The original TransBus Enviro200 design was innovative but ultimately unsuccessful, with few being sold before the introduction of the second generation Enviro200 (originally referred to as the Enviro200 Dart) revived sales for the product from 2006. It was supposed to be positioned in between a minibus and a rigid single-decker bus.
The Enviro200 was originally designed to be the replacement for the Dennis Dart SLF chassis and Alexander ALX200 and Plaxton Pointer 2 bodies. The Enviro200 MMC was launched in 2014, eventually replacing the original Enviro200 and Enviro300, which went out of production in 2018 and 2016 respectively

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGDC3H - Alan Mathison Turing OBE FRS (23 June 1912 ? 7 June 1954) was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. Turing was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing a formalisation of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
Born in Maida Vale, London, Turing was raised in southern England. He graduated at King's College, Cambridge, with a degree in mathematics. Whilst he was a fellow at Cambridge, he published a proof demonstrating that some purely mathematical yes?no questions can never be answered by computation and defined a Turing machine
During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre that produced Ultra intelligence. For a time he led Hut 8, the section that was responsible for German naval cryptanalysis. Here, he devised a number of techniques for speeding the breaking of German ciphers, including improvements to the pre-war Polish bomba method, an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine. Turing played a crucial role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Axis powers in many crucial engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic
Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts. He accepted hormone treatment with DES, a procedure commonly referred to as chemical castration, as an alternative to prison. Turing died on 7 June 1954, 16 days before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death as a suicide, but it has been noted that the known evidence is also consistent with accidental poisoning. Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NEA - Retsina (Greek: ?????????) is a Greek white (or ros??) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1F601 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M369GH - Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops.
Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of ?375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to ?521 million. The final cost after delays was ?776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. ????9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. The extended line is due to be operational by early 2023

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JC5N - Lothian Buses is a major bus operator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the largest municipal bus company in the United Kingdom: the City of Edinburgh Council (through Transport for Edinburgh) owns 91%, Midlothian Council 5%, East Lothian Council 3% and West Lothian Council 1%.
Lothian operates the majority of bus services in Edinburgh, and is a significant operator in East Lothian, Midlothian and most recently West Lothian. It operates a comprehensive night bus network, three routes to Edinburgh Airport, and owns the subsidiary companies Lothian Country, East Coast Buses, Edinburgh Bus Tours and Lothian Motorcoaches.
Lothian Buses have operated a flat-fare system since March 2006.[16] Adult and child singles and day tickets, pre-paid multiple singles and 'Ridacards' are also available, with senior citizens travelling on free travel passes in line with the rest of Scotland. As of February 2020, an adult single fare is ?1.80 and a child fare costs 90p. An adult day ticket costs ?4.50 and a child day ticket ?2.50.
Fares are paid into a hopper, which automatically dumps the money into a vault to which the driver has no access
change is not given.
The Lothian 'Ridacard' bus pass is a pre-paid plastic smartcard giving unlimited travel on regular daytime and night bus services, as well as Edinburgh Trams services. It is purchased initially from a Transport for Edinburgh Travelshop, where the owner's picture is incorporated on the card to prevent misuse. Once purchased, the card can be placed onto an on-board reader, which reads the contactless chip in the smartcard. Cards can be credited for a weekly, 4 weekly or annual period. A warning is displayed on the last five days of validity. The card can then be topped up at Transport for Edinburgh Travelshops or PayPoint equipped retailers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2RPH - There are mainly two types of ice cream vans in the United Kingdom: a hard van, which sells scoop ice cream and is only equipped with a freezer and a soft van, which has a freezer and also a soft serve whippy machine for serving ice cream cones and screwballs. They are usually converted from factory standard vans with the rear cut away and replaced with a fibre glass body (to reduce the weight).
Because of the British climate, running an ice cream van profitably is not only very difficult outside summer, but is also an unpredictable business. A summer heatwave can provoke a massive upturn in fortunes for a few days, but after the weather has cooled sales drop off dramatically. The need to take advantage of rare and short-lived opportunities can result in fierce rivalry between ice cream vans in coterminous areas, with the main disputes being over who is entitled to sell ice cream in a particular 'patch'. This has also led to some ice cream van vendors diversifying and selling other products such as crisps, chips, burgers or hot dogs from their vehicles at other times of the year.
In a number of Local Authority areas, particularly in London Boroughs with existing street markets, street trading regulations prohibit ice cream vans from remaining in one static location. The legislation also contains powers to ban ice-cream vans from specific streets. Proposals in the current London Local Authorities Bill would allow only 15 minutes trading per vehicle per street each day. There also exists a nationwide code of practice for the use of chimes, which limits the volume to 80 dB and the duration to twelve seconds, but these are rarely observed nor enforced. Chimes must not be played more often than every three minutes, near hospitals, schools and churches when they are in use.
In Scotland, ice cream vans have been used to sell smuggled cigarettes and, in the 1980s Glasgow ice cream wars, as front organizations to sell illicit drugs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY564E - Manchester Victoria station in Manchester, England is a combined mainline railway station and Metrolink tram stop. Situated to the north of the city centre on Hunts Bank, close to Manchester Cathedral, it adjoins Manchester Arena which was constructed on part of the former station site in the 1990s. Opened in 1844 and part of the Manchester station group, Victoria is Manchester's third busiest railway station after Piccadilly and Oxford Road and the second busiest station managed by Northern after Oxford Road.
The station hosts local and regional services to destinations in Northern England, such as Blackburn, Rochdale, Bradford, Leeds, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Halifax, Wigan, Southport, Blackpool (Sundays only) and Liverpool using the original Liverpool to Manchester line. Most trains calling at Victoria are operated by Northern. TransPennine Express services call at the station from Liverpool to Newcastle/Scarborough and services towards Manchester Airport (via the Ordsall Chord) from Middlesbrough/Redcar/Newcastle.
Manchester Victoria is a major interchange for the Metrolink light rail system. Two former railway lines into the station have been converted to tram operation: the line to Bury was converted in the early 1990s, in the first phase of Metrolink construction, and the line through Oldham to Rochdale was converted during 2009?2014. In the other direction, trams switch to on-street running when they emerge from Victoria Station and continue southwards through the city centre to Piccadilly or Deansgate-Castlefield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A8X - The Amhara genocide is an ongoing systematic massacre of ethnic Amhara and Agew people in Ethiopia since 1990. Large-scale killings and grave human rights violations followed the implementation of the ethnic-federalist system in the country. In most of the cases, the mass murders were silent with perpetrators from various ethno-militant groups? from Tigray TPLF or TDF, Oromo OLF?OLA, which are also known as Sene/Shane Oneg and the Gumuz armed groups. Ethnically motivated attacks against the Amhara have been reported, with mass graves continuously discovered in various locations. Many from the victim side stated that attempts to investigate and to uncovering data expose them to various forms of persecution. However, the results of two consecutive National Census Analyses and a report by the State revealed that over 2 million Amhara could not be traced. The figure reflects the decades-long massacres and enforced disappearances of the Amhara people. From the ongoing nature of the violence, the actual number is expected to be higher

A puffin crossing with nearside signals in Aviemore
A staggered set of pelican crossings with farside signals in Greenwich
Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPEK - Birmingham Coach Station (formerly Digbeth Coach Station) is a major coach interchange in Digbeth, Birmingham, England offering services to destinations throughout the island of Great Britain and also to Belfast and Dublin. National Express, the largest scheduled coach service provider in Europe, has its national headquarters on the site
The original interchange was built in 1929 as a bus depot by Midland Red, which was later converted into Digbeth Coach Station. Successor company Midland Red West used the coach station as a base for its Birmingham and Black Country operations. The original building was dark and dingy as it was not originally intended to serve passengers as a coach interchange.
Plans were initially developed for a new coach station on Great Charles Street, as Digbeth was considered by National Express to be an undesirable location. However, after the completion of the new Bullring and the planned Eastside redevelopment, it was decided to demolish the old structure and build a new coach station on the same site. Outline planning application for a design by Make Architects was submitted on behalf of National Express to Birmingham City Council in March 2006. However this option was abandoned in favour of a competing design by SBS Architects. The final planning application for the design by SBS Architects was submitted on 29 October 2007.
The old coach station closed in November 2007 for redevelopment and during reconstruction National Express used a temporary site in Oxford Street on the opposite side of Digbeth High Street, called Birmingham Central Coach Station. The refurbishment was estimated to have cost ?15 million. It was officially reopened on 18 December 2009 by the England national football team manager Fabio Capello. The new station has been awarded a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

It serves the OVO Hydro, the SEC Centre and the SEC Armadillo which are accessible by adjoining footbridge from an island platform. The station suffers badly from congestion at concerts as most of Greater Glasgow can be reached from the station. There is a siding adjacent to Platform 2, that can be used as a turnback siding for trains terminating at Anderston or Glasgow Central Low Level. The line is served by Class 318s and Class 320s. Ticket gates are in operation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRN - Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the public body responsible for co-ordinating transport services throughout Greater Manchester in North West England. The organisation traces its origins to the Transport Act 1968, when the SELNEC (South East Lancashire/North East Cheshire) Passenger Transport Executive was established to co-ordinate public transport in and around Manchester. Between 1974 and 2011, it was known as the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE), until a reform of local government in Greater Manchester granted it more powers and prompted a corporate rebranding.[1] The strategies and policies of Transport for Greater Manchester are set by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and its Greater Manchester Transport Committee.
Transport for Greater Manchester is responsible for investments in improving transport services and facilities. It is the executive arm of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority which funds and makes policies for TfGM. The authority is made up of 33 councillors appointed from the ten Greater Manchester districts (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan).

These are a red, stationary person to indicate that it is not safe to cross, and a green, walking person to indicate that it is safe to do so. Pelican crossings also provide non-visual indication that it is safe to cross, such as a beep, vibrating button or tactile rotating cone in order to assist visually impaired pedestrians.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNA1 - The Thatchers company was founded by William Thatcher in 1904. His son Stanley Thatcher, born in 1910, began selling draught cider to pubs in Somerset and the company's presence in the area grew. The company is still family owned and employs around 200 people. In 1992 Martin took over from his father, John Thatcher, as managing director.
It has 500 acres of its own orchard, as well as using apples from other growers in the area. Alongside its bush orchards, Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style. Trained on wires, this enables easier harvesting and also helps to ensure the fruit has the optimum combination of sunlight and rain. It has also led to the development of a new bespoke harvester. At the height of season, Thatchers can press 500 tonnes of apples per day. Thatchers also maintains an exhibition orchard in which over 458 different varieties of apple tree are grown. Many of the traditional ciders produced at Myrtle Farm are matured in 100-year-old oak vats, which gives the cider a distinctive taste.
In addition to its cider production, Myrtle Farm is the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants, dealing with 90 per cent of the UK's total crop, which it processes on behalf of Ribena.
Thatchers Cider is available in many sports clubs and events across the South West. They are involved with teams including Winscombe R.F.C., Bath Rugby, Somerset County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle F.C, Exeter City and Torquay United.
Thatchers are also involved in many local events and festivals including: Glastonbury Festival, Royal Bath and West Show, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and Cambridge Folk Festival.
Thatcher's lost their ongoing cider sponsorship of the Glastonbury festival in 2019 to Mallets cider

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307GP - Altrincham Interchange is a transport hub in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England. It consists of a bus station on Stamford Road, a Northern Rail-operated heavy rail station on the Mid-Cheshire Line, and a light rail stop which forms the terminus of Metrolink's Altrincham Line.
The original heavy rail element of the station was opened by the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway as Altrincham and Bowdon railway station in April 1881, changing to Altrincham railway station in May 1974. The Metrolink element opened in June 1992. The Interchange underwent a complete redevelopment, at a cost of ?19 million, starting in mid-July 2013. The new bus station opened officially on 7 December 2014.
Altrincham Interchange has four platforms. Two bay platforms are used for Metrolink services. Two further through platforms accommodate train services on the line between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester via Stockport. A bus station on the edge of the complex provides road-based interchange, and there is also a taxi rank.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BTW - The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway. It was so called when taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the Glasgow Underground in 1936. Despite this rebranding, many Glaswegians continued to refer to the network as the Subway. In 2003 the name Subway was officially readopted by its operator, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). A ?40,000 study examining the feasibility of an expansion into the city's south side is in progress.
The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow
that distinction belongs to a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1863, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a sub-surface tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.
The Subway runs from 06:30 to 23:40 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 18:12 on Sunday.

However, both companies' origins can be traced back to one of the original pioneers of bus operations in the capital, the London General Omnibus Company Limited (LGOC).
LGOC, or General as it was known, operated services throughout the capital and was absorbed into the new London Transport Executive in 1933. London Transport became synonymous with the red London bus until the bus operation was segregated in 1985, becoming London Buses Ltd and London Underground Ltd.
Upon privatisation in autumn 1994, London Central was purchased by the Go-Ahead Group, who are based in Newcastle, which itself was formed on the privatisation of Northern General Transport Ltd, previously part of the National Bus Company. London General was initially purchased by an employee / management team, being subsequently acquired by the Go-Ahead Group in the summer of 1996. These purchases were part of a policy of expansion by the Go-Ahead Group which continues today.

With increased tram traffic brought about by the expansion of the Metrolink network, it became necessary to build a new route across Manchester City Centre to alleviate congestion and improve capacity.
Known as the Second City Crossing (or 2CC), the project involved laying 0.8 miles (1.3 km) of tram tracks from St Peter's Square tram stop via Princess Street, Albert Square, Cross Street and Corporation Street to rejoin the original Metrolink line just before Victoria station. One new tram stop was built at Exchange Square. The project also involved re-ordering St Peter's Square and re-siting the Cenotaph to accommodate an enlarged tram interchange and junction. Construction began in 2014 and the 2CC route opened fully in February 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy FDNJR0 - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a light rail tram system in Greater Manchester, England. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP Group. In 2015/16, 34.3 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track, segregated from other traffic, often running alongside the roadway or in the central reservation, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system
the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had survived up to Metrolink's creation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F1JA7Y - Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, via London and New York, that was destroyed by a terrorist bomb on Wednesday, 21 December 1988, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board, in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing. Large sections of the aircraft crashed onto residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 more people on the ground.
Following a three-year joint investigation by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrest warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991. In 1999, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi handed over the two men for trial at Camp Zeist, Netherlands after protracted negotiations and UN sanctions. In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. In August 2009, he was released by the Scottish Government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012, remaining the only person to be convicted for the attack. He had continually protested his innocence.
In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing and paid compensation to the families of the victims, although he maintained that he had never given the order for the attack. During the Libyan Civil War, in 2011, a former government official claimed that the Libyan leader had personally ordered the bombing. Numerous conspiracy theories have developed regarding responsibility for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR7 - On tapping or scanning their smartphone over the QR code or NFC tag to the right of the poster, a unique url will open in their phone's browser. If the campaign is mobile-platform enabled, this will lead straight to the advertiser's website or content
if not, they will be taken to a standard Clear Channel landing page. On a scroller or digital panel (where multiple advertisers are involved), on scanning or tapping, the consumer will be presented with a list of advertisers whose campaigns are mobile platform enabled for them to select from.
Near field communication (NFC) is a set of ideas and technologies that enable smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less. Each full NFC device can work in 3 modes: NFC target (acting like a credential), NFC initiator (as a reader) and NFC peer to peer. Most of the first business models like advertisement tags or other industrial applications have not been successful, always overtaken by another technology (3D barcodes, UHF tags, ...)
The main advantage of NFC is that NFC devices are often cloud connected. Connected credentials can be provisioned over the air unlike a standard card (Hotel or visitor applications). All connected NFC enabled smartphones can be provisioned with dedicated apps, which gives any application hundreds of millions of potential dedicated readers in opposition of the traditional dedicated infrastructure of ticket, access control or payment readers. All NFC peers can connect a third party NFC device with a server for any action or reconfiguration.

The Kid CD, (2006).
Sixty-seven is the 19th prime number (the next is 71), an irregular prime, a lucky prime, the sum of five consecutive primes (7 + 11 + 13 + 17 + 19), and a Heegner number.
Since 18! + 1 is divisible by 67, but 67 is not one more than a multiple of 18, 67 is a Pillai prime. 67 is the atomic number of holmium, a lanthanide.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3A1R - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle which serves as a traveling retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play ? outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street.
Ice cream vans are often brightly decorated and carry images of ice cream, or some other adornment, such as cartoon characters. They may have painted-on notices, which can serve a commercial purpose (Stop me and buy one!) or a more serious one (Don't Skid on a Kid!) - serving as a warning to passing motorists that children may run out into the road at the sight of the van, or appear without warning from behind it. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this is often covered with small pictures of the available products, with their associated prices.
A distinctive feature of ice cream vans is their melodic chimes, and often these take the form of a famous and recognizable tune, usually The Mister Softee Jingle, Turkey in the Straw, Do Your Ears Hang Low?, Pop Goes The Weasel The Entertainer, Music Box Dancer, Home on the Range, It's a Small World, Super Mario Bros. Theme or Camptown Races
or, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Greensleeves, Whistle While You Work in Crewe and Nantwich, You Are My Sunshine in Vale Royal, Teddy Bears' Picnic in Sheffield, and Match of the Day in other places.
In some places in the US, ice cream trucks play the song Ice Cream by Andre Nickatina (essentially just Turkey in the Straw with bass).

Because each pipe produces a single pitch, the pipes are provided in sets called ranks, each of which has a common timbre and volume throughout the keyboard compass. Most organs have many ranks of pipes of differing timbre, pitch, and volume that the player can employ singly or in combination through the use of controls called stops.

Everyone over 45 has probbaly got a copy of this. Everyone under should download it, as you will recognise most of the tracks.
Rumours is the eleventh studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac. Largely recorded in California during 1976, it was produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut and was released on 4 February 1977 by Warner Bros. Records. The record peaked at the top of both the main United States Billboard chart and the United Kingdom Albums Chart. 'Go Your Own Way', 'Don't Stop', 'Dreams', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles.
A Grammy Award winner, Rumours is Fleetwood Mac's most successful release with sales of over 40 million copies worldwide.
The band wanted to expand on the commercial success of the 1975 record Fleetwood Mac, but struggled with relationship breakups before recording started. The Rumours studio sessions were marked by hedonistic behaviour and interpersonal strife between Fleetwood Mac members
these experiences informed the album's lyrics. Influenced by pop music, the record's tracks were recorded using a combination of acoustic and electric instruments.
The mixing process delayed the completion of Rumours, but was finished by the end of 1976. Following the album's release in 1977, Fleetwood Mac undertook worldwide promotional tours.
Rumours garnered widespread critical acclaim. Praise centred on its production quality and harmonies, which frequently relied on the interplay among three vocalists. The record has inspired the work of musical acts in different genres. Often considered Fleetwood Mac's best release, it has featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 1970s and the best albums of all time.
In 2004, Rumours was remastered and reissued with the addition of an extra track and a bonus CD of outtakes from the recording sessions.
Its lyrics have provided me with inspiration at various times in my life, when I have needed to think about tomorrow. 'Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone. Don't you look back'. Wise advice.

I found this a very interesting book and this lady very interesting as she told me she worked in the local Job Centre.
In David Cameroons 'Big Society' we will need to get our heads around the 'Non-Cash Reward'. There certainly will be limited or zero funds to support services that used to cost money.
The policy certainly has its critics. Labour leader Ed Miliband in February 2011 said Mr Cameron was undermining his own Big Society concept through spending cuts.
Various charity figures have suggested that the scale of local authority cuts could kill off the idea before it gets going - by 'destroying' existing voluntary groups.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu warned at one of his Sunday sermons, that investment in public services was needed if the Big Society was to succeed.
Norman Smith, BBC Radio4 had this comment:
The difficulty, it seems, he faces in getting his Big Society message over is that voters have rather more pressing matters on their mind.
After all, at a time of job losses, pay freezes, pension hikes and public service cuts - people may take the view that creating the Big Society is not very high on their list of priorities.
Somehow Mr Cameron has to convince voters it matters as much to them as it clearly does to him.
Merseyside television producer Phil Redmond has already attacked the 'big society' idea, saying it has been 'undermined by public spending cuts'.
The Brookside and Hollyoaks creator had originally been a fan of the concept, taking charge of a project involving volunteering and cultural activities in Liverpool.
He said: 'I do remain a strong supporter of the principle behind big society, because it wasn't too long ago that the media was full of stories about Big Brother, too much red tape, surveillance society, we need to get engaged with society and so on.
'It just came at the wrong moment.'
He said there was a need to make sure there was a separation between the big society plans and the cuts.

What an interesting book this chap had as he left the library. His face could be that of modern Britain. Getting older, we expect to have more over 60's soon than ever before, we also probably will be expected to work longer for smaller pensions on the whole.
In Britain we should be the best europeans of all, we have had everyone through here, at some point or another. Romans, Vikings, Normans etc. This book is the story of who we are and where we are from - the history of Britain through war and conquest, migration and racial integration.
The Welcome Trust has given a GBP2million grant to Oxford geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer to take DNA samples from hundreds of volunteers throughout Britain and find tell-tale fragments of DNA that reveal the biological traces of successive waves of colonisers - Celts, Saxons, Vikings, etc. - in various parts of Britain. These traces in part determine our facial features. In effect, this project will produce a genetic map of our islands revealing where today's Cornish or East Anglians originally came from.
The project is unique in that it uses cutting edge technology to question our accepted notions of our history. Added to this, the series and the book will meld science, history and personal stories to investigate our linguistic history, our surnames and placenames and compare findings with the results of the Bodmer study.Face of Britain will be a launch pad to explore Britain's earliest history while investigating why we look the way we do.

With the demise of the CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau), the local library can be the place people turn for advice. This can be for legal matters, health issues or finance.
A well stocked library can help everyone access the information they need. Books may not do the job for you, thats down to the borrower of course.
It would be interesting to see if the person this lady was taking these books out for, benifitted from them 3 weeks later when they were returned/renewed.

The biggest, longest, greatest, scary-ist and most bizarre. Kids love this stuff. Thankfully our central library does have this stuff in spades. Stuffed with facts these feed the young mind.
Many of these books are not the type of thing you might buy, but are good to borrow for a few weeks, then move on to the next lot.

The local library is a place to learn more about where you live. I was not born here, ended up here more by practicality than choice.
Usually libraries have microfiche of newspapers going back many decades and can serve as archives of local history.
For a small town, commuter dormatory for Liverpool and Manchester, Warrington has its place in history. Two IRA bombs, the second claiming two childs lives left a dark shadow over the town.
The troubles in Warrington started on Thursday 25 February 1993. Three IRA terrorists broke into a Warrington gas storage depot. After planting Semtex bombs, the trio tried to escape and shot a patrolling police officer.
Most of their bombs failed to detonate, but one did blow up. Thankfully, nobody was injured. The three IRA men were arrested and Warrington believed its brush with terrorism had passed. They were wrong.
On Saturday 20 March 1993 another IRA unit took revenge on Warrington for the arrests three weeks earlier. It was the day before Mothering Sunday and stores in Bridge Street were bustling with shoppers. Two bombs, planted in waste bins, exploded within a minute of each other.
I was in Warrington that day. Luckily in Sainsburys when the bombs exploded. I visit Belfast a lot and I am pleased that the two communities can manage to agree to disagree in peace now. I regret the loss of the innocent lives of three year old Jonathan Ball and 12 year old Tim Parry, who only lived streets away from me.
I hope libraries stay open to spread the experience of this, as well as the victorian explorers who brought Egyptian mummies to the museum and the 1651 scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War. Our lives would be poorer for not knowing the history of the soil we tread on every day.

A cracking place for kids books and also those books of trains, ships and machines young lads always love. In my experience too, we ended up going home with the full quota of 8 books.
Books develop a childs imagination. I am convinced reading and writing is aided by having books around and having a diverse library of them on your doorstep. If you are lucky you might get a corner with Lego to fiddle with too.
Dora the Explorer is an American animated television series created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner. Dora the Explorer became a regular series in 2000. The show can be found on the Nickelodeon cable television network.
Dora, the main character, is a young 7-year-old latin american girl who embarks on a trip in every episode in order to find something or help somebody. She asks the viewers at home to help her find new ways to reach places with the help of Map. She also teaches viewers Spanish, introducing them to short words and phrases.
Dora is available in many languages as TV series and books. In each country she pairs the native language with English. For example in Russia, the bilingualism is Russian-English. The series is called Dasha-sledopyt ('Dasha the Pathfinder'). Dasha is the children's name of Daria (Darya).

You probably like me receive recommendations from Amazon and the like, introducing me to things to buy similar to the things I already have purchased. The effect of this is that we are recommended to listen to, watch or read more of the same.
In a library it is easy to walk in for a book on the Great Western Railway and walk out with a biography and a gluten free cook book as well, via the checkout desk (now fully computerised) of course.
I dont know if this man had been looking for this book, but his body language, holding this book at arms length revealed something extra. It is a racy title.
How did a 19 year-old, middle-class, Catholic girl from Munich become Hitler's mistress and what kept him faithful until the end of their lives? Was her appeal sexual, domestic, political - or did he really love her? Eva Anna Paula Hitler n\u00e9e Braun (6 February 1912 \u2013 30 April 1945) was the longtime companion of Adolf Hitler and for less than 40 hours, his wife.
Braun met Hitler in Munich when she was 17 years old while working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer and began seeing him often about two years later. By 1936 she was a part of his household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden and by all accounts lived a materially luxurious and sheltered life throughout World War II.
She was quite racy by all accounts and enjoyed make-up and nude sunbathing.
As the Third Reich collapsed towards the end of the war, Braun swore her loyalty to Hitler and went to Berlin to be by his side in the heavily reinforced F\u00fchrerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. As Red Army troops fought their way into the neighbourhood on 29 April 1945, she married Hitler during a brief civil ceremony: she was 33 and he 56. Less than 40 hours later they committed suicide together in a sitting room of the bunker, she by biting into a capsule of cyanide.
Strangely, the German public was wholly unaware of Braun until after her death. You would need several super injunctions these days to manage that!

I had a long chat with this chap. His father had played football with the opposition during the war and that is why he selected this book ( Soccer at War: The Complete Record of British Football and Footballers During the Second World War) on this day.
'Soccer at War' is the compelling account of the national game during this defining moment in history. Rollin reveals how it was that football not only continued to be played and watched, but also grew in popularity and stature. He explains how, while the country fought for freedom, the sport offered morale-boosting appeal to war workers, servicemen, and civilians alike.
It tells of the hundreds of professional footballers who joined up, those who became heroes, and those who did not come back, the enthusiasts who administered the game in their spare time, and the players who turned out for thirty bob a week. The servicemen who went AWOL to play and others who hitch-hiked just to get to a game also find their place in the story, along with the record-breaking goalscoring achievements. Looking further afield to occupied Europe, 'Soccer at War' also exposes the role of football in Hitler's regime.

The traditional library was always a place you could find a good textbook. Today often the internet is touted as a replacement for good quality text books.
The Internet is very much like television in that it takes time away from other pursuits, provides entertainment and information, but in no way can compare with the warm, personal experience of reading a good book. This is not the only reason why the Internet will never replace books, for books provide the in-depth knowledge of a subject that sitting in front of a computer monitor cannot provide.
In an increasingly rushed and hurried world, the sound-bite is becoming the currency of knowledge rather than in-depth experience, only obtained by research, study, seeing and doing. The internet is being often used as an excuse to stock less textbooks in libraries.

This serves as the special Collections section of the John Rylands University Library (JRUL). It is a remarkable victorian gothic building right in the heart of the city's shopping district Deansgate.
The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands. The collections include medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing, including the Gutenberg Bible, and the personal papers of notable local figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and chemist John Dalton.
Enriqueta Rylands purchased a site on Deansgate, at the heart of Manchester city centre, in 1889 for her planned memorial library and commissioned a design from architect Basil Champneys. Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, which is a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church, although the actual concept was of an Oxford college library on a larger scale.
The core of the library was formed around the collection of 40,000 books including many rarities assembled by George John Spencer, which Mrs Rylands purchased in 1892. The library was finally opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It was illuminated internally by electricity (rather than gas which was more common at the time). The use of electricity was still in its early stages, the supply had to be generated on-site. This took some years to achieve due to the inexperience of local contractors, but the library became one of the first public buildings in Manchester to be lit by electricity and continued to generate its own supply until 1950.
Basil Champneys was given the rare honour of speaking about the building at a general meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1912. The library was granted listed building status on 25 January 1952, which was upgraded to Grade I on 6 June 1994.
In the Rylands Gallery on the lower floor, you can see some of the most important items from the Library's collections including magnificent medieval manuscripts and examples of the earliest books ever printed. The gallery is organized around seven themes. Faiths, History of the Bible, Beautiful Books, Science, World Literatures, Everyday Life and Manchester.
It is one of Manchester's building gems and inside more resembles a cathedral than a library. Marble statues of Enriqueta and John Rylands watch over the readers from either end of the room. If you are in the city, make an excuse to spend some time to drink in the history.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4656685501 - 'Here is a reader in The John Rylands Library, a Victorian Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester and part of Manchester University. The library is a grand historical place to study with the smell of books all around. There are many collections here, but you will be as welcome if you bring in Martin Amis or Dan Brown.
The foundations of the Library's collections were the Althorp Library of Lord Spencer (yes that one!), acquired in 1892 and a part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana purchased from James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford in 1901. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana was one of the most impressive private collections in Britain at the time, both for its size and for the rarity of some of the materials it contained. The manuscript collections (including Chinese and Japanese printed books) were sold in 1901 to Mrs. Rylands for the John Rylands Library.
The collections include exquisite medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing including the Gutenberg Bible, as well as the personal papers of distinguished historical figures including Elizabeth Gaskell, John Dalton and John Wesley. The library also houses the papyrus fragments known as the Rylands Papyri and documents from North Africa. The most notable of these are the so-called St John Fragment, believed to be the oldest extant New Testament document., Rylands Library Papyrus P52, the earliest fragment of the canonical Gospel of John text and Papyrus Rylands 463, a manuscript fragment of the apocryphal Gospel of Mary. The collection of incunabula numbers about 4,500.
In a nod to Irene Royal and Ann Brown, librarians I see very infrequently, there have been many important staff associated with the collection.
Librarians at John Rylands before its merger include Edward Gordon Duff in 1899 and 1900 and Henry Guppy between 1899 and 1948 (joint Librarian with Duff until 1900). Duff was responsible for the original library catalogue, compiled between 1893 and 1899: Catalogue of the Printed Books and Manuscripts in the John Rylands Library, Manchester
ed. E. G. Duff. Manchester: J. E. Cornish, 1899. 3 vols.
Dr Guppy began publication of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library in 1903
it later became a journal publishing academic articles and from autumn 1972 the title was changed to the Bulletin of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester (further slight changes have occurred since).[30] Other noteworthy members of staff were James Rendel Harris, Alphonse Mingana, the Semitic scholar Professor Edward Robertson (d. 1964) who was the third librarian, and Moses Tyson, keeper of western manuscripts, afterwards librarian of Manchester University Library

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBCH - The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, most notably several generations of public transport ticket machines and the worlds first desktop electronic calculator, the Sumlock ANITA.
History
The company was established in July 1878 in order to acquire the patent rights to an American hand-registering ticket punch that was being used by a number of British tramway companies. By 1884 they had begun development of their own range of ticket printing machines. In 1891 they began supplying ticketing machines for London General Omnibus Company. From then until its demise, Bell Punch would have an unbroken history of supplying successive London bus companies, along with many other bus operators throughout the country.
The first half of the 20th century saw the company expand into different markets, including in cinema and theatre ticketing, horse race totalisator ticket machines, taximeters and mechanical calculators.
In the Second World War the company developed and manufactured a variety of military equipment, including mechanical aircraft navigation computers and naval gunnery sighting and ranging devices.
In 1958 it began development of a desktop electronic calculator, which came to market as the Sumlock ANITA in 1961. The calculator division was established as Sumlock Anita Electronics Ltd in 1966. It was to become the largest supplier of calculators in the U.K., with sales of ?4.5 million in 1971. In 1972 they developed one of the first electronic pocket calculators, but were beaten to the market by Sinclair Radionics due to lack of management enthusiasm for the project. In 1973 Sumlock Anita Electronics were acquired by Rockwell International who closed down the operation in 1976.
The remainder of the business continued to be owned by the then parent company, Control Systems Ltd which was acquired the Swedish Incentive Group in the early 1980s which resulted in the break-up of the company

I have been a regular customer of Ron (of Ron Snax, Outside catering available 01827-706191) for some time. The mis-spelt pricelist notwithstanding (Turkcy), he does a cracking job. \u00a32.40 buys you a bagette the size of two fists, packed with fried goodness. My only gripe is that he doesn't do black pudding, but that has never stopped me calling there. His litre of steaming tea or coffee also blows Costa away.
Rons does barms and soft bagettes. It always amazes me how short a distance you need to travel, for bread names to change so dramatically. It could be a bread-cake, teacake (obviously without fruit), a sub, barm, breadbun, cob, stotty, scone, buttery, flour cake or muffin. Using the wrong one can lead to a lot of confusion. Any more bread styles you know from across Britain, please leave a comment and let me know.
The old 'Greasy Spoon' in my opinion gets an unfair press. Wikipedia defines it as:
'Greasy spoon is a colloquial or slang term used in Britain, Ireland and North America for small, especially cheap, archetypal working class restaurants or diners. The name 'greasy spoon' is used to imply a less-than-rigorous approach to hygiene and dishwashing, and appears in use in the early 20th century'.
There have been a few stories, mainly hoaxes based on ficticious EU reports about eating habits of long distance drivers and their health. As any truck driver knows, the greatest hazard is infact 'Truck drivers testicle' caused by vibrations encountered over time from sitting over the tractor unit engine.
Thankfully, Rons position appears safe, although he did tell me that a new rating system is apparently coming in. So look out for his star rating, next time you are on the A46. Tell him HotpixUK sent you!

Manchesters second smallest boozer, with room for approximately twenty people including the feisty bar maid. The kind of venue where the music would stop when you walked in - that's if they had room for speakers - but within half an hour you'd be on first name terms with the regulars.
Not exactly a vast array of cocktails (This is more for the beer drinkers and G&T lovers) this is a bar that you hope will stay in Manchester for ever. In fact it's central location, on the busy Portland Street near Manchesters china town, makes it even more surprising that this hasn't been turned into apartments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAK - Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down.

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

Streets like a jungle......
'Boys and girls' was the lead single from the 'Park Life' album. It was Blur's first top 5 UK hit and most successful single until 'Country House' reached number 1 the following year. The single was seen as a comeback for the band, who had had a lean commercial period for a couple of years. The song surpassed the band's previous commercial peak 'There's No Other Way' by three spots on the UK Singles Chart.
The video, directed by 10cc's Kevin Godley, featured Blur performing the song against a bluescreen backdrop of documentary footage people on 18-30 package holidays. Godley branded the video as 'Page 3 rubbish' while Blur found it 'perfect'. The front cover of the single was taken from a pack of Durex condoms.
In 1994, the song was named single of the year by NME and Melody Maker in the UK. It was also nominated for best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Everyone should own at least one Blur album, my choice would be the 'Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur'. Track it down, tell 'em I sent you.

Manchester has a wealth of LGBT culture and activities. The sitcom drama 'Queer as folk' was set in the Canal St area of the city. 20th century broadcaster and social commentator Brian Redhead once said 'Manchester ... is the capital, in every sense, of the North of England, where the modern world was born. The people know their geography is without equal. Their history is their response to it'. Whilst Ian Brown of the Stone Roses has previously said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach' (er.. top man, bob-on!).
Manchester has claimed to have the UK's largest gay population outside of London. Gay Village, centred on the Canal Street area, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. On the last weekend in August it hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention on television series Queer as Folk and Coronation Street. It is also the birthplace of several gay rights organisations including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Queer Youth Alliance, The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation.
Manchester has its own gay sports teams, Village Manchester FC (soccer), Northern Wave (swimming) and Village Spartans (Rugby) which take part in Manchester's annual Pride Games. In the 1990s Manchester City Council gave support to the establishment of a gay centre and employed four lesbians and gay men to help implement their equal opportunity policy. Their work continued in spite of Section 28 and the City Council actively supported the Mardi Gras and other gay events.
The year round gay and lesbian heritage trail exhibits Manchester's gay history. In 2003, Manchester played host city to the annual Europride festival. The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation, Britain's biggest gay charity, is based on Richmond Street in the city centre. Manchester Metropolitan University has been named the most gay friendly university in the UK.
One of these weekends, hop on a Richard Branson Virgin Train and feel welcome to come check us out!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ317 - Birkenhead Town Hall is a civic building and former town hall in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, England. The building was the former administrative headquarters of the County Borough of Birkenhead, and more recently, council offices for the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. Birkenhead Town Hall remains the location of the town's register office. However, since the closure of the Wirral Museum in 2010, there is uncertainty over the future purpose of the Grade II* listed building.
History
When Hamilton Square was designed in the early 19th century, a plot of land was made available for the siting of a town hall between Hamilton Street and Chester Street. Designed by local architect Christopher Ellison, the building was constructed using Scottish granite and sandstone from the now filled-in local quarry at Storeton. It was officially opened in 1887
The building consisted of a council chamber, offices, with a concert hall and function rooms known as the Assembly Rooms. Birkenhead's magistrates' court chambers are located in a separate building of the same design to the rear. The clock tower is 200 feet in height and displays four faces
the clock and five bells within were manufactured and fitted by Gillett & Co. (at a total cost of ?900). After a fire in 1901, the upper part of the clock tower was rebuilt to a design by Henry Hartley. The rebuilding included a stained glass window by Gilbert P. Gamon representing Edward I's visit to Birkenhead Priory in 1277

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1F5T4 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFF9 - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways. Seven new Supercharging stations, all located at motorway service stations, are now in the process of being built, with more coming soon.
Heretofore, Tesla's somewhat anaemic Supercharger roll-out in the UK had mostly been located in cities
not exactly the ideal place to charge up your car for a long-distance drive. Some Superchargers were located near a motorway or main road, but not in motorway service stations.
As reported by Engadget, the dearth of motorway Superchargers was apparently due to a legal dispute between Tesla and Ecotricity, a UK-based company that already had a large number of electric vehicle charging points across the country, including exclusivity deals at motorway service stations.
According to a few newspaper and website reports, Tesla approached Ecotricity prior to the launch of right-hand-drive Model S in the UK, to try and strike some kind of deal to get Supercharging stations into motorway service stations. Seemingly, at some point that deal turned sour, with Ecotricity's founder saying back in May 2014 that this is nothing more than an attempted smash and grab raid. Soon after, both companies hunkered down in litigation land, suing and countersuing each other. This week they finally reached an out-of-court settlement.
Yesterday, somewhat suspiciously and/or coincidentally, both Tesla and Ecotricity published very similar blog posts. Neither post referenced the other company, instead focusing on their commitment to grow their UK electric vehicle charging networks. While the details of the settlement are confidential, given that Tesla is now allowed to build Superchargers at motorway service stations, it would appear to have got its way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5M9 - The Liverpool Passion Plays tell the story of the Passion of Christ, including Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion.
Using the Cathedral's architecture and artwork as a backdrop, the audience watch the story of Jesus unfold, starting as a young boy, and witnessing his entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, and his trial and crucifixion.
The performance will use the vast central space of Liverpool Cathedral as a backdrop with the crucifixion scene taking place on our very own Calvary, high above the audience, on the Dulverton Bridge.
The performance combines music, script and liturgy to demonstrate what Christ's suffering and resurrection means for us today. The performance has been put together by cast, crew and musicians who are volunteers from the cathedral's congregations, choirs and young peoples' groups, and the public.'

It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.
