Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYND - Cherwell Valley services is a Moto motorway service station on the M40 motorway at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester, in Oxfordshire, England. In August 2011 it was rated as 3 stars by quality assessors at Visit England
however, it is unknown whether this was a rating of the new or temporary building.
Location
The services are located at junction 10 of the M40, and are accessed from a roundabout on the junction.
Despite its name, it is neither in the valley nor the drainage basin of the Cherwell, but rather beside a small east-flowing stream that becomes part of the Padbury Brook before joining the Great Ouse at Buckingham.
History
The former main building
It was opened in the spring of 1994 and gave the 89-mile motorway its first service station, more than three years after its completion. The site was previously occupied by a toilet facility, which had been there since the motorway's opening.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD247D - Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545.
Since that time, the ruins of the abbey have continued to be used by sailors as a landmark at the headland. Since the 20th century, the substantial ruins of the church have been declared a Grade I Listed building and are in the care of English Heritage
the site museum is housed in Cholmley House
The first monastery was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon era King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu) as Streoneshalh (the older name for Whitby). He appointed Lady Hilda, abbess of Hartlepool Abbey and grand-niece of Edwin, the first Christian king of Northumbria, as founding abbess
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula featured Count Dracula as a creature resembling a large dog which came ashore at the headland and runs up the 199 steps to the graveyard of St Mary's Church in the shadow of the Whitby Abbey ruins. The abbey is also described in Mina Harker's diary in the novel:
Right over the town is the ruin of Whitby Abbey, which was sacked by the Danes, and which is the scene of part of Marmion, where the girl was built up in the wall. It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits
there is a legend that a white lady is seen in one of the windows

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5M5 - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EDT6 - A urinal is a sanitary plumbing fixture for urination only, predominantly used by males. It can take the form of a container or simply a wall, with drainage and automatic or manual flushing, or without flush water as is the case for waterless urinals.
The different types of urinals, be it for single users or as trough designs for multiple users, are intended to be utilized from a standing position (rather than squatting or sitting). The term may also apply to a small building or other structure containing such fixtures. It can also refer to a small container in which urine can be collected for medical analysis, or for use where access to toilet facilities is not possible, such as in small aircraft, during extended stakeouts, or for the bedridden.
While urinals are generally intended for use by males, it is also possible for females to use them. Designers of urinals for women have adopted various approaches: some intending the user to hover over the unit, facing away from it, others intending the user to stand facing the urinal, with or without a female urination device. While uncommon due to restroom segregation, it is possible for females to use male urinals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHR4H - Etruria is a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
Etruria was the fourth and penultimate site for the Wedgwood pottery business. Josiah Wedgwood, who was previously based in Burslem, opened his new works in 1769. It was named after the Italian district of Etruria, home of the Etruscan people who were renowned for their artistic products. The site covered 350 acres (140 ha) and was next to the Trent and Mersey Canal. As well as Wedgwood's home, Etruria Hall, it included the Etruria Works which remained in use by the Wedgwood enterprise until 1950. The Wedgwood factory is now in Barlaston, a village about six miles to the south of the Etruria site.
Etruria Hall was the site of the substantial invention of photography by Thomas Wedgwood in the 1790s.
After Wedgwood
Much of Etruria became derelict with the move of Wedgwood after the Second World War and the subsequent closure of the nearby Shelton Bar steelworks. Large-scale regeneration began in the 1980s with the Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival.
Etruria is home to the Etruria Industrial Museum, a scheduled ancient monument, which includes a working steam engine called Princess. The museum buildings were originally a bone and flint mill built in 1857 to grind materials for the pottery industry. Inside visitors can see displays on the history of the site and original machinery. On the first weekend of each month the museum's 1903 coal-fired boiler provides steam to operate Princess which then turns the grinding machinery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRB5 - Jiggering and jolleying: These operations are carried out on the potter's wheel and allow the time taken to bring wares to a standardized form to be reduced. Jiggering is the operation of bringing a shaped tool into contact with the plastic clay of a piece under construction, the piece itself being set on a rotating plaster mould on the wheel.
The jigger tool shapes one face while the mould shapes the other. Jiggering is used only in the production of flat wares, such as plates, but a similar operation, jolleying, is used in the production of hollow-wares such as cups.
Jiggering and jolleying have been used in the production of pottery since at least the 18th century. In large-scale factory production, jiggering and jolleying are usually automated, which allows the operations to be carried out by semi-skilled labour.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRTR - Empty Woolworths Store Longton SOT Stoke 2013, still not filled. An indication of the decline of high street retailing and particularly in the Potteries area of Staffordshire
In November 2008 Woolworths Group entered administration with Deloitte, and by early January 2009 all of its stores had closed. Woolworths' financial performance had been declining in the previous few years, and the events of the closure coincided with the financial crisis and recession which was occurring at the time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRXT - The mosaic is built on a low brick plinth. The structure has a breeze block support and makes use of recycled Victorian blue bricks as well as slate for the seats on either side.
The whole structure is faced in ceramic mosaics, pieces from local ceramic companies' products, glass beads, and tiles.
A number of themes have been incorporated into the design, including animals and plants indigenous to the area, a picture of the church, together with mouldings of heads and other features from gravestones and monuments in the churchyard, images of the traditional coal and bottle kilns that made the city famous, as well as high-tech industries, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, whose funeral service was held at the Church, and a depiction of the Trent and Mersey Canal merging into the Sea of Galilee and then into the River Trent as it wraps round the base of the mosaic, unifying the design for the whole structure. Within this ribbon of mosaic, ammonites and different varieties of fish are depicted.
On the front of the bench, facing away from the church, are plaques depicting St Peter's Church and School, interspersed with heads, both European and Asian. The base of the seat features an image of two men in a boat, with a mast in the shape of an upside-down cross and two crossed keys (both emblems of St Peter, to whom the nearby church is dedicated).
The wildlife depicted on the right hand end of the bench includes a bat with outstretched wings, a squirrel, a rabbit, a frog, a snail, a fox, a butterfly, a robin, a blackbird, a magpie, a hedgehog and a wren.
The back of the bench celebrates the industrial heritage of Stoke on Trent. Its designs includes plaques featuring men in flat caps carrying pots to the kiln on wooden boards, bottle kilns, pit winding gear and factory chimneys. These are interspersed with smaller pieces commemorating the pottery produced in the area. Below the seat, the central design is of two cartoon-like figures in a canal barge.

The band are Jon - vocals, Bez on vocals, Wiv with Bass guitar, Caci and Sam on Guitar and drums from Jay. If anyone would like me to dig any more shots out of my archives, leave a comment or a Flickr mail.

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumi\u00e9re and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

Three tracks that all get 'heavy rotation' on my iPod.
Unfortunately the old 'Mr Smiths' has now seen better days. Closed now in its last incarnation as Halo, most people might remember it as the start point of the TV show 'Hitman and Her'.
It was a British television dance music show hosted by (record producer &
keen keen railway enthusiast) Pete Waterman and (Vegetarian Childrens TV star) Michaela Strachan. It ran almost continuously for over four years and three months September 1988 until December 1992.
Mr Smiths was quite a good club, visible from anyone crossing Bridge St into town. Tuesdays was usually a lively night. It was pound a pint in town and all Chinese takeaways were closed that night, hence in Mr Smiths it was often referred to as 'Triad Night', due to all young Chinese things partying.
If you have a memory of the old Mr Smiths, please leave a comment.
One comment I spotted on a blog was this:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHR0H - Etruria Industrial Museum is the last steam-powered potters' mill in Britain. The mill is ?in steam' several times a year when the 1903 boiler is fired and historic machinery can be seen working. Situated in a pleasant location at the junction of the Trent & Mersey, and Caldon Canals the museum is also a perfect stop-off for walkers, cyclists and boaters.
Although the museum currently operates as part of Stoke-on-Trent City Council's Museum Service, the Friends of Etruria Industrial Museum ? a group of enthusiastic supporters and volunteers ? have decided to set up a small charity to help preserve and develop Etruria Industrial Museum for the benefit of the public
