Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TXR - A church pebble pool plate displayed inside a church in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The shallow bowl contains small stones arranged within a patterned base and is used as a focus for prayer, reflection, and symbolic participation in Christian worship.
Pebble pools are commonly found in churches as interactive devotional objects, inviting visitors and congregants to place stones in the bowl as acts of prayer, remembrance, or contemplation. The practice draws on biblical symbolism of stones as markers of faith, memory, and spiritual journey.
The pebble pool plate is shown set on a wooden table alongside traditional church furnishings, including a cross, candlesticks, and printed prayers, reinforcing the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the interior space. The arrangement reflects the blending of historic liturgical tradition with more informal, participatory forms of worship found in many modern Anglican churches.
Photographed indoors under natural light, the image documents an everyday aspect of contemporary church life and provides an editorial illustration of Christian ritual, spiritual reflection, and the lived use of religious spaces in rural West Yorkshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JGHW - The Pier Head (properly, George's Pier Head) is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It was part of the former Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004, but revoked in 2021. As well as a collection of landmark buildings, recreational open space, and a number of memorials, the Pier Head was (and for some traffic still is) the landing site for passenger ships travelling to and from the city.
By the 1890s, the George's Dock, where the Pier Head now is, was essentially redundant. Built in 1771, it was the third dock built in Liverpool, and was too small and too shallow in depth for the commercial ships of the late 19th century. Most of the site was owned by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, set up by Parliament in 1857
a small part of the site still was still held by the Corporation of the City of Liverpool. The board and the corporation had differing priorities, and the former were not inclined to forgo any commercial advantage for the benefit of the latter
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 1998 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the Grade II listed George's Dock Building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K30HBD - George Formby, OBE (born George Hoy Booth
26 May 1904 ? 6 March 1961) was an English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s. On stage, screen and record he sang light, comical songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele, and became the United Kingdom's highest-paid entertainer.
Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he was the son of George Formby Sr, from whom he later took his stage name. After an early career as a stable boy and jockey, Formby took to the music hall stage after the early death of his father in 1921. His early performances were taken exclusively from his father's act, including the same songs, jokes and characters. In 1923 he made two career-changing decisions ? he purchased a ukulele, and married Beryl Ingham, a fellow performer who became his manager and transformed his act. She insisted that he appear on stage formally dressed, and introduced the ukulele to his performance. He started his recording career in 1926 and, from 1934, he increasingly worked in film to develop into a major star by the late 1930s and 1940s, and became the UK's most popular entertainer during those decades. The media historian Brian McFarlane writes that on film, Formby portrayed gormless Lancastrian innocents who would win through against some form of villainy, gaining the affection of an attractive middle-class girl in the process.

Exactly two years after his death, two magnificent murals were unveiled in memory of the great Sir Ken Dodd ? on the wall of the theatre he helped save.
The murals now adorning the Liverpool Royal Court were commissioned by The Comedy Trust and created by the artist Paul Curtis, best known for his Liverbird wings mural.
Lady Anne Dodd ? who performed the emotional ceremony ? told the ECHO: They are just amazing, absolutely amazing. I'm humbled. I'm thrilled to bits. I woke up sad this morning because it's a sad day in one way, but this just shows he brought happiness.
Ken would have felt humbled ? he would have said it was tattyfilarious, plumptious and ?I'm totally discomknockerated!'
The first of the bright and colourful murals shows a sharply dressed Doddy, tickling stick in hand, by the seaside, in reference to Blackpool but also his love of playing seaside theatres all over the country.
The second features a couple of Diddy Men and words from the Squire of Knotty Ash's trademark song ? Happiness, which was sung by the Liverpool Royal Court Community Choir, as a big crowd gathered outside the theatre for the unveiling.
Lady Anne added: They couldn't be in a better place. They will be seen by so many people ? walking by or going past on buses ? and hopefully they will make people smile.
The murals were funded by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson with a contribution from his City Fund.
Sir Ken, who performed at the Royal Court across several decades, starting in the 1950s, played a huge part in keeping the theatre open in the 1970s.
In 1974, he entered the Guinness Book of Records thanks to his Marathon Mirthquake at the theatre ? it lasted three hours, 30 minutes and six seconds and included 1,500 jokes.
Later, he became part of the Royal Court Theatre and Arts Trust ? and even sold the first tickets at the box office for Laughter Show

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T6 - A kilt (Scottish Gaelic: f??ileadh [??fe?l?])[1] is a type of knee-length non-bifurcated skirt with pleats at the back, originating in the traditional dress of Gaelic men and boys in the Scottish Highlands. It is first recorded in the 16th century as the great kilt, a full-length garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak. The small kilt or modern kilt emerged in the 18th century, and is essentially the bottom half of the great kilt. Since the 19th century, it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland, and more broadly with Gaelic or Celtic heritage. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.
Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and other sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of informal male clothing, returning to its roots as an everyday garment. Particularly in North America, kilts are now made for casual wear in a variety of materials. Alternative fastenings may be used and pockets inserted to avoid the need for a sporran. Kilts have also been adopted as female wear for some sports.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JJK - Billy in the Bowl (fl. 1780s), beggar and robber, lived on the northside of Dublin. Nothing is known of his earliest years and most of the details of his life are hazy. He first came to public notice in the 1780s begging around Stoneybatter, Grangegorman and Oxmantown. Born with no legs, he propelled himself about in a large bowl to which wheels had been fitted, thereby drawing the nickname ?Billy in the Bowl' from locals. Despite his disability, Billy apparently was a handsome man, with a striking face, dark eyes, and powerful arms and body, and was also graced with great charm. He became a favourite of the maids and servant-girls working the great houses of north Dublin and they plied him with food, drink, money and, it has been suggested, sexual favours.
It was said that he occasionally robbed from wealthy women who stopped to give him alms and that, since he was readily identifiable, followed robbery with murder. On one occasion in 1786 he attempted to rob two women, but they overpowered him by pulling his hair and sticking a thumb in his eye. Some hours later, male friends of the two women captured Billy in a hedge near the back of the Royal Barracks and conveyed him to custody using a wheel-barrow. Convicted of robbery, Billy was sent to Newgate prison where he saw out his days doing hard labour, while city notables came to visit him as an object of curiosity.
In Dublin folklore Billy is sometimes remembered as a Robin Hood-style character who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. He is recalled in traditional songs such as ?The twang-man' and makes an appearance in James Joyce's (qv) Finnegans wake: ?Billi with the Boule, who had mummed and mauled up to that (for he was hesitency in excelcism)'. More recently he featured in Shane MacGowan's song ?The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn' on the album Rum, sodomy and the lash (1985): ?You remember that foul evening when you heard the banshees howl / There was lazy drunken bastards singing Billy in the Bowl

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DC9382 - Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd OBE (8 November 1927 ? 11 March 2018) was an English comedian, singer and occasional actor. He was described as the last great music hall entertainer, and was primarily known for his live stand-up performances.
A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue tickling stick prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of How tickled I am! He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the Diddy Men.
Dodd was described as the last great music hall entertainer.[14] His stand-up comedy style was fast and relied on the rapid delivery of one-liner jokes. He said that his comic influences included other Liverpool comedians like Arthur Askey, Robb Wilton, Tommy Handley and the cheeky chappy from Brighton, Max Miller
Dodd had many hit records, charting on 18 occasions in the UK Top 40, including his first single Love Is Like a Violin (1960), produced on Decca Records by Alex Wharton, which charted at number 8 (UK). His version of Bill Anderson's song Happiness charted in 1964 and became Dodd's signature song

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF638 - Here's a little insight into the world of D7606
Picking spots is not always easy, a lot of areas like the east end of London are quite saturated with street art, finding a spot without going over other peoples work and tags is always a priority. Being respectful to others work is very important to me. So I like to find new spots and go into areas where no one has been before, I did a series of Bollywood actors and found myself in a busy Southall one night, that was fun. I have been into the urbex spots around Sheffield where the spray can and letters are king, so adding brightly coloured paste ups to those grimy walls is a risk and one I'm glad I have taken, some will approve and others will not but that's the joy of trying new places.
Mostly I am a lover of other peoples work and my photography of that work is how I find different neighbourhoods. Most areas are well know so often I just wander around taking photos, this then gives me that opportunity to do my own work too. I guess my favourite areas right now are Sheffield in the UK and Kreuzberg in Berlin, the back streets are full of grimy walls and doors, a perfect place for paste ups, stickers and tags..
I love those iconic British symbols, ask an American to name an iconic British symbol and a lot will say our red phone box or post box. They featured in my first work and still do in a big way.
Oh yes, I love to take those iconic British symbols abroad, I have travelled a fair bit in the last year- France, Germany and the USA. Hard to say a favourite place really, all have great art and great spots. Overall New York was the most impressive but maybe that was a size thing? It is massive, so much to see and so much good original work around.
Have you ever got in trouble with the police or other people for putting up your work?
Ha? oh no, everything I do is within the law !!! I am sure I have annoyed people with my work, some artists are honest enough to say? stop !! That's too much !! or that latest work

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PB6G53 - Virgin introduces talking train lavatories
Virgin Trains has turned to humour to tackle the vexed problem of blocked lavatories
In the heyday of British Rail, gentlemen were urged to lift the seat when using the lavatories,
Now rather more explicit instructions are being given to passengers on Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Trains services to the west midlands, north west England and Scotland.
After the lavatory door shuts passengers are greeted with a pre-recorded message.
It declares: Please don't flush nappies, sanitary towels, paper towels, gum, old phones, unpaid bills, junk mail, your ex's sweater, hopes, dreams or goldfish down this toilet.
Lavatories have already been adapted on the fleet of 20 Voyager trains and work is under way on its 56 tilting Pendolino trains.
At times there have been problems with lavatories being blocked by inappropriate items flushed down the bowl.
Passenger forums suggest that the issue of blocked lavatories is a major source of annoyance for the travelling public
This has prompted Virgin, which earlier this year was given an extension of its franchise on the West Coast Main Line, to act.
When lavatories get blocked it means trains have to be taken out of service, a spokesman said.
It is also a huge inconvenience to passengers especially on a long trip.
We wanted to do something which would grab people's attention and a talking toilet does get the message across.
They are being well received, but time will tell. We're trying to face a serious issue in a chummy, informal way.
The initiative was welcomed by Antony Smith, chief executive of the consumer watchdog, Passenger Focus.
It can be frustrating to find that toilets are out of order or blocked, so hopefully the announcements will help this happen less.
Anything that gets useful information across to passengers in a fun way is to be welcomed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR4WW - Postage stamps and postal history of Australia
The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps ? see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.

'My Generation' is a song by the British rock group The Who, which became a hit and one of their most recognisable songs. The song was named the 11th greatest song by Rolling Stone on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and 13th on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of Rock &
Roll.
It's also part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and is inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for 'historical, artistic and significant' value. In 2009 it was named the 37th Greatest Hard Rock Song by VH1.
The song was released as a single on 5 November 1965, reaching No. 2 in the UK, the Who's highest charting single in the UK and No. 74 in America. 'My Generation' also appeared on The Who's 1965 debut album, My Generation (The Who Sings My Generation in the United States), and in greatly extended form on their live album Live at Leeds (1970). The Who re-recorded the song for the Ready Steady Who! EP in 1966, but this version was only released in 1995 on the remastered version of the A Quick One album.
The main difference between this version and the original is that instead of the hail of feedback which ends the original, the band play a chaotic rendition of Edward Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory'. In the album's liner notes the song is credited to both Townshend and Elgar. A music video featuring a montage of live performance clips has been played on music stations.
The Zimmers was a British band, thought to have the oldest members of any band in the world. The oldest member (Buster Martin) claimed to have been born in 1906, although some sources indicate he was born in 1913 \u2013 he died in 2011. The former lead singer Alf Carretta died on 29 June 2010, aged 93. The group takes its name from the Zimmer frame (walker).
The band was created as a feature in a BBC Television documentary, which was first broadcast on 28 May 2007. The feature of forming the band and recording a single was intended to give a voice to the feelings of isolation and imprisonment suffered by the elderly. The Zimmers' logo is a parody of The Beatles' logo, as is the image of them walking across Abbey Road.
The Zimmers released their first single, a cover of The Who's 'My Generation', reaching no 26 in the UK Singles Chart, on 28 May 2007. The song was produced by Mike Hedges, the video shot by Geoff Wonfor, and it was recorded in the Beatles Studio 2 at Abbey Road.
On 7 April 2012, the band performed the Beastie Boys' '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' on Britain's Got Talent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BTY7AK - John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 ? November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK and Jack, was an American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. Kennedy served at the height of the Cold War, and the majority of his work as president concerned relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. A Democrat, Kennedy represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate prior to becoming president.
Kennedy was born into a wealthy political family in Brookline, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University in 1940, before joining the U.S. Naval Reserve the following year. During World War II, he commanded a series of PT boats in the Pacific theater and earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his service. After a brief stint in journalism, Kennedy represented a working-class Boston district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953. He was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate and served as the junior Senator from Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. While in the Senate, Kennedy published his book, Profiles in Courage, which won a Pulitzer Prize. In the 1960 presidential election, he narrowly defeated Republican opponent Richard Nixon, who was the incumbent vice president.

As school changed, the \u2018cocks\u2019 of the primary became the new intake of the secondary the acne started.
Bumfluff soon followed and a recognition that girls in the year were going through changes too. You could see from the older years and the sixth form where that process would take them. Opaque tights, filled out hips. Maybe a taste of something to come, forbidden fruit or just something in later years to regret. Bored adults staying together for the sake of a child maybe.
Not something that crosses the mind at the back of the groundsmens hut in the old showers. Clumsy, flustered, rubbish really. A rite of passage all the same.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23TD - Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system too.

This pub has a rich history. Licensees are known from 1778 although the age of the original building is unknown.
The Northwich Guardian newspaper had offices in the corner portion of the building before it moved to its present premises.
In the 1860's the Crown also functioned as the County Court and Petty Sessions House. Public auctions of real estate were also held here.
In 1966 this public house was one of those permitted an extension of opening hours 'for the accommodation of persons attending the Northwich Public Market'.
The Crown was renamed the Swinging Witch for a few years from 1978 and then the Brasserie Couronne until recently reverting to 'the Crown'.
A picture of the old Crown can be seen at www.geocities.com/brigaban/crown3.html ',

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDH95B - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.
