The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light metro system primarily serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London and providing a direct connection between London's two major financial districts, Canary Wharf and the City of London. First opened on 31 August 1987, the DLR has been extended multiple times, giving a total route length of 38 km (24 miles). Lines now reach north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. An extension to Thamesmead is currently being proposed.

He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. In 1985 he was appointed as a member of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on Urban Priority Areas

Worlock was born in St John's Wood, London, on 4 February 1920, the son of Captain Harford Worlock and his wife Dora (n??e Hoblyn), a suffragette (or as she called herself, a suffragist). His father, a journalist turned Conservative political agent, attended Keble College, Oxford, and planned to become a priest in the Church of England
many of his forebears had been Anglican clergy. However, Harford and Dora Worlock converted to Roman Catholicism and raised their son in that faith.
Worlock was a student at St Edmund's College from 1934 to 1944. By this time the family home was in Winchester. As a small boy he was rebuked for having an answer to everything, a trait that remained. He was ordained at Old Hall Green on 3 June 1944 as a priest of the Diocese of Westminster, seminarians being exempt from military service so they could be rushed through to serve as chaplains.
Not long afterwards, he was appointed private secretary to Cardinal Griffin, and assisted successive cardinal-archbishops of Westminster for almost two decades
Worlock was appointed Bishop of Portsmouth on 18 October 1965 and consecrated at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, Portsmouth, on 21 December 1965.[6] While in Portsmouth he set about renewing parishes, as well as undertaking the work of developing ecumenical relationships and the building of over 30 new churches in his diocese.
In 1976, he was appointed Archbishop of Liverpool. He was one of the panelists for the first edition of the BBC programme Question Time in 1979. The following year, he convened at Liverpool the National Pastoral Congress which gave rise to the report The Easter People. Important events in his cathedral included the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982 and the 1990 launch of the Council of Churches of Britain and Ireland.

Designed by the artist Stephen Broadbent, sponsored by Alstom UK Ltd, Lincoln Co-operative Society, and other Lincoln businesses and organisations, donated to Lincoln City Council.
The sculpture was completed in 2002, unveiled on 2 February, and spans the River Witham in Lincoln's City Square. It takes the form of two aluminium-and-steel human figures reaching to each other across the water. The design is intended to echo the shape of turbine blades, in recognition of Lincoln's industrial heritage, which transform into dynamic figures that reach out to empower one another, just as the blades empower one another within the turbine.
The statue was commissioned with the intent to create a bold and striking sculpture to celebrate the millennium, that spans the River Witham in Lincoln's city centre and act as a focal point in the space.
At 16 m (17 yd) tall, Empowerment is the largest sculpture in Lincolnshire. Increasingly, it is now used alongside more traditional images of Lincoln ? the cathedral and castle ? as a recognisable 'tourist emblem' of the city, similar to the adoption of the Angel of the North as a symbol of North East England

The north chapel is known as the Hollingworth Chapel and the south chapel is the Staley Chapel. The tower is in four stages with angled buttresses, a three-light west window above which is a clock face and two-light belfry openings. In one corner is a stair turret. At the top is a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials.
In the churchyard is a sundial with a dial dated 1811. It consists of a stone shaft with a copper dial and a gnomon. It is listed at Grade II. Also listed at Grade II are the gatepiers, railings, steps and walls of the churchyard. Near the church is a medieval cross which was restored in 1760 and again in 1897, the latter restoration being to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. The octagonal shaft stands on a stepped circular ashlar plinth. On its top is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. It is listed at Grade II*

The store traded from its site on Chester's Eastgate Street from 1791 until 2021. Once regarded as the Harrods of the North, the building interior contains many ornate features such as glass-domed roofs and elaborate plasterwork surrounding small chandeliers in the main entrance area. Some of the glass roof on the second floor has been concealed as it has been covered by the construction of the third-floor extension which contained the main caf?? and Kalmora Spa.
The oldest part of the store is housed in the Grade I listed Crypt Chambers, designed by T. M. Penson incorporating Georgian, Tudor and Gothic facades. Construction was completed in 1858. The building incorporates part of the Chester Rows. On the front of the tower at Row level is a blank scroll, on the east face is a recessed panel containing the initials W. B. (for William Brown), on the west face the initials are C. B. (for Charles Brown) and on the rear face is a scroll inscribed AD 1858: Crypt Chambers. The Gothic facade frontage is built over a medieval undercroft dating from the twelfth century. The undercroft most recently contained 'The Tea Press' tea room.
Another extension to the building was completed in 1965 to link Browns to the nearby Grosvenor shopping centre. A new three-story extension was built in 2002 on the site formerly occupied by the offices of the Chester Chronicle.
It was acquired by Debenhams in 1976. Browns was the only store in the group to retain its own trading name alongside the standard 'Debenhams' branding. Debenhams entered liquidation in early 2021 and all remaining stores closed during May that year. The building is owned by British Land

The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan.
Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough

The work, nearly three hours long, was first performed (in a concert version) for the Dublin Joyce Centenary in 1982 by the RTE Singers and RTE Concert Orchestra and broadcast on BBC and RTE radio. The operetta is based on James Joyce's 1922 novel Ulysses. It was published in book form in 1986. The texts of some of the songs also appear in the novels Earthly Powers (1980) and The End of World News (1982)

the foundation stone was laid on 20 June 1895. Coxwell Street to the north of Market Square is home to the Baptist Church that was founded in 1651 ? making it one of the oldest Baptist churches in England. Its current building was started in 1856.
To the west of the town is Cirencester House, the seat of Earl Bathurst and the site of one of the finest landscape gardens in England, laid out by the first Earl Bathurst after 1714.
Abbey House, Cirencester was a country house built on the site of the former Cirencester Abbey following its dissolution and demolition at the English Reformation in the 1530s. The site was granted in 1564 to Richard Master, physician to Queen Elizabeth I. The house was rebuilt and altered at several dates by the Master family, who still own the agricultural estate. By 1897 the house was let, and it remained in the occupation of tenants until shortly after the Second World War. It was finally demolished in 1964.
On Cotswold Avenue is the site of a Roman amphitheatre.

It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities. Central station is served by diesel stopping trains between Liverpool and Manchester, and diesel express services between Liverpool and the North East of England or between Liverpool and East Anglia.
Central station has no electrified lines being served only by diesel trains. The second station serving the town centre is Warrington Bank Quay, which accommodates electrified lines on the West Coast Main Line with express services to London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Scotland and also an electrified service to Liverpool Lime Street. The main station building faces away from the town and is of a classical style with some polychrome brickwork. Most of it is rented out to small businesses, the booking office and other facilities having been relocated to a modern building at a lower level. From street level, passengers climb six steps or a short ramp to reach the booking office, and climb further steps to the platforms. Disabled passengers can now easily access both platforms as lifts were installed in June 2008, making Warrington Central fully accessible for the first time.
The station has a customer service office, toilets, waiting rooms, a newsagent and a coffee stall. The entrance building was enlarged and modernised in 2010?11.
Outside there is a car park and a taxi rank. The station is located close to Warrington Bus Interchange.
The adjoining Cheshire Lines Warehouse (a listed building) has been redeveloped as apartments, along with six new apartment blocks.

Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914?1918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire.

St. Stephan was originally built in 990 at the order of Archbishop Willigis, who also initiated the building of Mainz Cathedral. The church was founded on top of the highest hill in the town, most likely on behalf of Theophanu, the widow of Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor. Willigis intended the church to be a site of prayer for the Empire.
The provost of the Collegiate Church administered one of the archdiaconates (a medieval organizational form similar to today's diaconates) of the Archbishopric of Mainz.
The current church building dates from the late medieval era
construction of the main area of the church began in about 1267 and was completed in 1340. The successional building kept the guidelines of the floor plan of the original Willigis building and with it the design as a double choir church. St. Stephan is the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine district, and is (besides Mainz Cathedral) the most important church in the city of Mainz.

Only a few changes have been made to the church since the 14th century. The cloister, for instance, was added between 1462 and 1499 to the southern side of the church, and the outer face of the church was updated during the Baroque period. In 1857 a great explosion in a nearby powder magazine (Mainz was a federal fortress in the 19th century) destroyed the baroque facing of the church.
St. Stephan was heavily damaged in the cause of the bombing of Mainz in World War II. The cloister was heavily damaged and was rebuilt between 1968 and 1971
the restoration of the huge western belfry was also completed at that time, albeit with some difficulty.

Letterman's successor, Stephen Colbert, continues to broadcast The Late Show with Stephen Colbert from the Ed Sullivan Theater, although extensive renovations were made between the two hosts' tenures.[16] Removal of the Letterman set took place only a few hours after his last show, on May 20, 2015. Letterman's marquee was also removed, and was temporarily replaced by a banner promoting the Angelo's Pizza restaurant adjacent to the theater, featuring Colbert posing with a slice of pizza.
The theater underwent a full restoration to its original 1927 splendor, including the exposure of the theater's dome, which had been covered up by air ducts and sound buffers, the re-installation of the original stained-glass windows, which had been removed and placed in storage during the Letterman era, and the restoration of a wooden chandelier with individual stained-glass chambers that house its bulbs. The restoration was made possible due to advances in technology that allowed less sound and video equipment to cover up the auditorium's architectural details. CBS executive Richard Hart explained that Colbert was initially hesitant to use the theater, but called for the restoration after he was informed about the dome while touring the facility.
Colbert described his new set as being intimate
it features a multi-tier design, with extensive use of LED lighting and video projection backdrops, and a larger desk area than that of Letterman. Exposed for the new show, the Sullivan's dome is lit up with a digital projection system which is used to display images above the theater, such as a kaleidoscopic pattern featuring images of Colbert's face and the CBS logo. Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.

Water flows from a large pool at one end, down a winding holder and is poured over a formation at the end. The structure is concrete, headed by a bronze moulding which includes marine life. The Thirty-Nine Steps is an adventure novel by the Scottish author John Buchan. It first appeared as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine in August and September 1915 before being published in book form in October that year by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh. It is the first of five novels featuring Richard Hannay, an all-action hero with a stiff upper lip and a miraculous knack for getting himself out of sticky situations.
The novel formed the basis for a number of film adaptations, notably: Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 version

While on a great photo walk with good drinking friend and botanical polyglot Stephen Buchan in Humbie woods, a quiet oasis a few miles south of Pencaitland, East Lotian, Scotland the other week, this track was bouncing around in my head.
Portugal. The Man is an American experimental rock band based in Portland, Oregon, but originally from Wasilla, Alaska. The group released their first two albums with Fearless Records.
This is a track from their 4th album, The Satanic Satanist.
Released on July 21, 2009 it was originally named The Satanic Satanist of the Majestic Majesty, the album title was later shortened and an acoustic counterpart entitled The Majestic Majesty was released. The Satanic Satanist is themed around memories and stories from singer John Gourley's growing up in the state of Alaska. The album was recorded with the help of record producer Paul Q. Kolderie of Pixies and Radiohead fame, and it was the band's first time recording an album with pre-production.
Humbie is a hamlet and rural parish in East Lothian, Scotland. It lies in the south-west of the county, approximately 10 miles south-west of Haddington and 15 miles south-east of Edinburgh. Humbie as we know it today was formed as the result of the union between Keith Marischal and Keith Hundeby in 1618. There is not much of a village, more a scattered hamlet.
The 'T-Plan' Parish Church was rebuilt in 1800 and Gothicized in 1866 by David Bryce. The 'chancel' was added in 1932. Memorials in the churchyard include a heraldic tablet of the Borthwicks of Whitburgh of the early 17th century, and another monument to James Scriven of Ploughlandhill who died in 1668. The path down to the ample woodland winds down from the churchyard.

Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. A collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995, under the name Babybird. He recruited a band made up of Huw Chadbourn (keyboards), Robert Gregory (drums), John Pedder (bass) and Luke Scott (guitar), in order to tour and promote his work.
During 1995, two further albums of demo recordings were released under the name Babybird (Bad Shave and Fatherhood) and two in 1996 (The Happiest Man Alive and Dying Happy). Babybird were signed to Echo Records (a division of the Chrysalis Group), and the first authentic single, a full-band recording of 'Goodnight', which had appeared in demo form on Fatherhood, was released in July 1996, becoming a minor hit in the UK Singles Chart. The group's second single, 'You're Gorgeous', reached number 3 in the UK in October 1996, and was one of the biggest selling singles of the year, going on to chart around the world.
Stephen can laugh about it on tour, but 'You're Gorgeous' set a difficult precident to follow. It hurts so much that it rarely gets played nowadays, more a millstone around his and Babybirds neck. Arguably, the commercial sound and success of 'You're Gorgeous', which received massive exposure by comparison, made it hard for many to take Jones seriously as an indie artist. Essentially, what he was best at was no longer what he was best known for, after it.
Stephen Jones has produced two works of fiction, The Bad Book in 2000 and Harry and Ida Swop Teeth (also the title of a Babybird b-side) in 2003. He also collaborated with DED Associates, who have designed many of his CD covers, on a 2000 art book Travel Sickness.

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. Model 500 &
Infiniti were names used by Juan Atkins. He is widely credited as the originator of techno music, specifically Detroit techno along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. The three, sometimes called the Belleville Three, attended high school together in Belleville, Michigan, near Detroit.
At age sixteen, Atkins heard electronic music for the first time, which would prove to be a life-changing experience. In late-1990s interviews, he recalls the sound of synthesizers as being like 'UFOs landing.' He soon had his first synthesizer and abandoned playing funk bass.
\u201c When I first heard synthesizers dropped on records it was great\u2026 like UFOs landing on records, so I got one.
\u2026It wasn\u2019t any one particular group that turned me on to synthesizers, but 'Flashlight' (Parliament's number one R &
B hit from early 1978) was the first record I heard where maybe 75 percent of the production was electronic.'
The first publicized UFO sightings were usually referred to using the term mystery airships, which were commonly seen and described as such during the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th.
The term foo fighters was used by American fighter pilots during World War II to refer to UFOs.
The first widely publicized U.S. sighting, reported by private pilot Kenneth Arnold in June 1947, gave rise to the popular terms 'flying saucer' and 'flying disc', of which the former is still sometimes used, even though Arnold said the most of the objects he saw were not totally circular and one was crescent-shaped (see Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting for details). In addition, the infamous Roswell UFO Incident occurred at about the same time, which only served to further fuel public interest in the topic.
The term 'UFO' was first suggested in 1952 by Cpt. Edward J. Ruppelt, who headed Project Blue Book, then the USAF's official investigation of UFOs. Ruppelt felt that 'flying saucer' did not reflect the diversity of the sightings. He suggested that UFO should be pronounced as a word \u2013 you-foe. However it is now usually pronounced by forming each letter: U.F.O. His term was quickly adopted by the United States Air Force, which also briefly used 'UFOB'. The Air Force initially defined UFOs as those objects that remain unidentified after scrutiny by expert investigators, though today the term UFO is often used for any unexplained sighting regardless of whether it has been investigated.
Because the term UFO is ambiguous \u2013 referring either to any unidentified sighting, or in popular usage to alien spacecraft \u2013 and the public and media ridicule sometimes associated with the topic, some investigators now prefer to use other terms such as unidentified aerial phenomenon (or UAP).
For trivia buffs, the equivalent acronym for UFO in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian is OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado, Objeto Voador N\u00e3o Identificado, Objet volant non identifi\u00e9 or Oggetto Volante Non Identificato).

This old track from the The Psychedelic Furs, President Gas usually comes to mind when I am doing my civic duty every three to four years.
The Furs were an act spawned from the British punk rock scene. Originally RKO,' then 'Radio' and for a while 'The Europeans'. Built around singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar. The classic first album was a Steve Lillywhite production.
The band recorded their 1983 album, Forever Now, with producer Todd Rundgren in Woodstock, New York. In 1986 when movie director/writer John Hughes borrowed their song title 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly-recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat' from the 1987 album 'Midnight To Midnight', was to be the Furs' biggest top 40 entry in the US.
The band split in the early 1990s, with the Butler brothers going on to found Love Spit Love. In 2000, 'Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live' was released to plug the gap of the missing live album. In my opinion, the BBC in concert bootlegs of 1982 &
1984 are better encapsulations of the band live. I saw them at the Royal Court in Liverpool that latter year.
A UK reunion tour was pencilled in last year including a manchester academy date, but this was unfortunately cancelled. earlier dates in the USA went ahead and a recording of 17/09/2009 in San Francisco that can be found on the web sounds like a band on top form.
Fingers crossed I may manage to see them again soon!

It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

Hazel is common across europe and its outer edges. It is often seen with Oak on more fertile and lower lying ground. Hazel is a member of the birch family of trees, Betulaceae, and can grow to a height of 10 metres, although full height is seldom seen in Britain.
Typically it has a number of shoots or trunks branching out at, or just above, ground level, and this growth habit has led to some people referring to it as a bush rather than a tree, because it doesn't meet the strict definition for a tree, of having a single stem that is unbranched near the ground.
Male flowers are in the form of catkins, which are pale yellow in colour and up to 5 cm. long. They open in February, when hazel and its companion deciduous trees are all leafless, so they are one of the first obvious signs of spring in the forest. The female flowers are tiny red tufts, growing out of what look like swollen buds, and are visible on the same branches as the male catkins. Pollination is by wind, and hazel is self-incompatible - successful pollination only occurs between different trees, as a single tree cannot pollinate itself.
Fertilised female flowers grow into nuts which are up to 2 cm. in size and occur in clusters of 1 to 4. Each nut is partially enclosed by a cup-shaped sheath of papery bracts, or modified leaves. The nuts ripen to a brown colour in September and October, with the nut itself enclosed by a tough woody shell. Empty nuts are an occasional occurrence.
The nuts are distributed by squirrels, woodpeckers, and, after falling to the ground, by other small rodents. Most of the nuts are consumed by these dispersers, but some of those which are hoarded for winter, or are overlooked, germinate and grow the following spring.
Hazel leaves are eaten by roe deer and red deer, and the nuts, which are rich in fats and protein, are eaten by the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) and squirrels. Squirrels split the shell of the nut in two halves to get the kernel inside, whereas wood mice will gnaw a hole through the shell. In England, hazel is an important tree for the dormouse.

Rather than a real 'castle' it is a fine house designed by the man that created parliament. It was featured in 'Jeeves and Wooster' with Stephen Fry.
The 5th Earl discovered The Tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt. Highclere Castle, is the home of 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumi\u00e9re and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

A truly compact place awash with old Tay ferry crossing timetables, metal signs and Beer/Whisky mirrors. A true one off and one of my watering holes whenever I get the chance to pop into the old town. Unfortunatly no longer has Cressers brush shop opposite.

Once home of the legendary Walsall Illuminations festival of lights enjoyed annually by millions since its inauguration in 1952, Walsall Arboretum itself has its origins in another much more ancient activity in the town ? limestone mining.
The area now occupied by the Arboretum was originally part of Rushall until 1876. Limestone had been quarried in the vicinity since at least the late 18th century, with the Persehouse family demolishing Reynolds Hall so that the very profitable quarrying could continue. However, operations had ceased by the 1840's, leaving two great pits to fill up with water, both from the nearby stream and from springs and general drainage. The larger of the two pits, now lakes, was named Hatherton Lake by 1845, and the fine old row of houses now known as Victoria Terrace just to the north was in fact built as Hatherton Lake Villas by the early 1850's.

The Flame arrived in Warrington from Halton via Liverpool Road at around 12.30pm. It will travel the length of Sankey Street, past the Golden Gates and Bank Park, where 300 primary school children took part in a mini-Olympics.
It was then carried to Market Gate where the 70-strong Warrington Male Voice Choir performed, and then turn down Buttermarket Street and on to Winwick Street. The Torch then called into Tesco for a 15-minute stop.
The route was announced by Warrington Borough Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the public are invited to line the streets throughout the town centre or to visit Orford Park to celebrate the achievements of the eight inspirational Torchbearers who will be carrying the Flame in Warrington.
Torchbearers included Great Sankey resident Stephen Deakin MBE. He is the manager of the Royal Liverpool Hospital transplant sports team and an enthusiastic campaigner for organ donation.
Stephen aged 50, said: When I first heard I had been nominated I was absolutely made up but to be chosen to carry the torch. I am really honoured and humbled.
Other torch bearers from Warrington include Emily Woodward age 12, Helen Lea, age 42, Ian Livingston and Jason El-kaleh age 17.
Cllr Terry O'Neill, leader of the council, said: I would encourage everyone to come out and see the Flame as it comes through the town, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to get the countdown to London 2012 officially started in Warrington.

It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

Lymm Cross is in the village of Lymm, Cheshire, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
The cross dates from the early to the middle 17th century and it was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials.
