Peveril of the Peak (1823) is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Along with Ivanhoe, Kenilworth, and Woodstock this is one of the English novels in the Waverley novels series, with the main action taking place around 1678 in the Peak District, the Isle of Man, and London, and centring on the Popish Plot.
Plot introduction
Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the Popish Plot of 1678.
Most of the story takes place in Derbyshire, London, and on the Isle of Man. The title refers to Peveril Castle in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Buses mainly travel from the bus station around the Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham and Carnforth areas, but regular services also run as far afield as Preston, Blackpool and Knott End on Sea in Lancashire. Skipton, Hawes, Settle, Bentham and Ingleton in North Yorkshire and Kirkby Lonsdale, Kendal, Keswick and the central Lake District in Cumbria (route 555). There is also a single seasonal Sunday and Bank Holiday service that runs directly to Clitheroe. The Goldline brand was introduced to try to win more middle-class motorists to bus services. It was initially trialled in two areas, Perth and Warwick from November 2007, both on routes which received kick-start funding from the government to help establish the routes. Stagecoach East Scotland invested ?300,000 to demonstrate the idea to politicians.
Goldline routes have a luxury specification. Buses have hand-stitched leather seats, metallic paint, special flooring and free WiFi. Drivers wear special uniform and there is a Goldline customer charter
In February 2009 the service was expanded to Aldershot and in September 2009 to Cheltenham and Gloucester on route 94. At this stage the brand name changed from Goldline to Stagecoach Gold, as well as the introduction of a new livery with brighter swoops added, as opposed to the previous gold and blue only livery. As of 2016, all brand new Stagecoach buses, including non-gold vehicles, come equipped with high back leather seats, USB charging facilities and many with free onboard Wi-Fi. A Gloucestershire bus route has officially been axed despite more than 600 people signing a petition to save it. Back in October 2022, Stagecoach said they would scrap a dozen routes across the county including the E bus which allows residents in the village of Woodmancote to travel into Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham.
In a notice posted at the main village bus stop, Stagecoach say: We regret that due to low passenger numbers, Service E will no longer run, and this bus stop will no longer be served by Stagecoach. For alternative travel, Stagecoach Service D buses will continue to run between Bishops Cleeve (Mill Parade), Cheltenham Town Centre and Hatherley with departures up to every 20-minutes, 7-days a week.
Fears rural people will become 'prisoners in their own homes' due to Gloucestershire bus cuts
'Not having a bus means they are literally imprisoned in their own homes, unable to walk or cycle because they are too old or too young or because it's so dangerous'
Rural Gloucestershire residents who rely on public transport are going to become prisoners in their own homes due to recently announced bus cuts. This is the view of Forest of Dean Councillor Chris McFarling (G, Sedbury) who raised several concerns at a Shire Hall meeting this week where transport chiefs gave an update on the situation affecting buses.
He thanked the cabinet member and officers for being honest about the problem they face after Stagecoach decided to withdraw from several routes due to a shortage of drivers. Cllr McFarling described the reality many bus users face across the county with buses simply not turning up or people being left stranded when their return journey is cancelled.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWFC - The AEC Routemaster is a double-decker bus designed by London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC) and Park Royal Vehicles. The first prototype was completed in September 1954 and the last one was delivered in 1968. The layout of the vehicle was traditional for the time, with a half-cab, front-mounted engine and open rear platform, although the coach version was fitted with rear platform doors.
Forward entrance vehicles with platform doors were also produced as was a unique front-entrance prototype with the engine mounted transversely at the rear. The first Routemasters entered service with London Transport in February 1956 and the last were withdrawn from regular service in December 2005, although one heritage route is still operated by Routemasters in central London.
Most Routemasters were built for London Transport, although small numbers were built for British European Airways and the Northern General Transport Company. A total of 2,876 Routemasters were built with 1,280 still in existence.
A pioneering design, the Routemaster outlasted several of its replacement types in London, survived the privatisation of the former London Transport bus operators and was used by other operators around the UK. In modern UK public transport bus operation, the old-fashioned features of the standard Routemaster were both praised and criticised. The open platform, while exposed to the elements, allowed boarding and alighting in places other than official stops
and the presence of a conductor allowed minimal boarding time and optimal security, but with greater labour costs.
Despite the retirement of the original version, the Routemaster has retained iconic status, and is considered a British cultural icon. In the late 2000s work began on a New Routemaster bus inspired by the Routemaster's traditional design, which entered service in February 2012

This route and route 9 (Heritage) were announced initially as 'A' and 'B' as short workings on existing routes to avoid any potential complications in the future: from 2017 all services have to be operated by Disability Discrimination Act compliant vehicles or an alternative must exist to make the same journey by exactly the same means. The Mayor of London and Transport for London decided to have a deadline of 2006 for their own services with a few exceptions.
One of the two routes, awarded to Stagecoach London, was for services between Trafalgar Square and Tower Hill, covering the most touristy section of route 15 taking in the Tower of London, Monument, St Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square. An extension to the Oxford Street area was excluded due to severe congestion there. The number of the parallel route 15 was adopted for the Routemasters, despite potential for confusion with the main 15.
Ten buses were allocated to the operator
5 for the daily turnout, 3 operational spares and 2 as a strategic reserve. Despite having only a couple of weeks to prepare the vehicles after they left normal service, Stagecoach turned out 5 immaculately presented RMs for the first day launch, 14 November 2005. The first journey was driven by Peter Hendy, managing director of TfL surface transport.
In April 2008, one of the buses was painted in a special Indian Red and Silver livery, to promote Bow Garage's Centenary. It was first revealed at the LBPT's Cobham bus rally, and soon after entered regular service.

It operates the majority of commuter services from its Central London terminus at London Waterloo to South West London as well as most outer suburban/regional services in Surrey, Hampshire and Dorset. It also provides regional services in Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, and Wiltshire and on the Isle of Wight. The area of operation, essentially the former South Western division of Network SouthEast, is also roughly that of the pre-1923 London and South Western Railway (excluding everything west of Exeter). The Stagecoach Group took over the franchise on the privatisation of British Rail in 1996 and retained it in 2004 and again in 2007 making it, along with Chiltern Railways, Virgin Trains and First Great Western, the longest-running franchise. It is a particularly complex operation due to the large number and variety of services.

The network consists of six lines which radiate from Manchester city centre and terminate at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, Didsbury, Eccles, and Rochdale. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP In 2013/14, 29.2 million passenger journeys were made on the system, also known as Manchester Metrolink.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor north?south connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

Plot introduction
