Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97X3 - A documentary indoor view of a full-size Halloween mummy figure on display inside Stockport Market, photographed as part of seasonal autumn decorations. The prop is a stylised, cartoonishly frightening mummy with bandage-like wrapping, an exaggerated facial expression and exposed skeletal details, standing upright on a metal base. The setting reads clearly as an indoor public venue or market environment, with shuttered stall panels, painted trim and practical fixtures visible around the edges of the frame, including fire extinguishers and wall notices that add a recognisable working building context rather than a staged studio scene.
The image suits editorial and commercial themes around Halloween as a UK seasonal event, market-led promotions, and how town-centre venues use themed displays to attract families and increase footfall during October and half-term. The composition is straightforward and readable, making it useful as a general illustration for Halloween decorations, spooky-season retail, community events, and indoor seasonal marketing in British towns. The indoor lighting and everyday background details help anchor the photograph in real-world place and activity, giving it value for documentary coverage of local markets and seasonal public programming.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBF - This image shows a colourful Trick or Treaters Welcome sign placed in a residential garden decorated for Halloween. The sign is surrounded by seasonal props including skeleton figures, ghost decorations, and themed garden ornaments, creating a welcoming and playful atmosphere for visiting children.
In the UK, displaying a sign such as this has become a common way for households to signal participation in Halloween activities, particularly trick or treating. It provides reassurance to families and helps manage expectations within neighbourhoods by clearly indicating which homes are open to visitors.
Halloween has grown in popularity across Britain over recent decades, blending traditional folklore with modern community-focused celebrations. Garden displays and signage form part of this visual culture, transforming ordinary residential spaces into festive, themed environments during late October.
Photographed in daylight, the image offers a documentary view of contemporary Halloween customs in the UK. It is well suited for editorial use covering seasonal traditions, family activities, community life, autumn celebrations, and cultural change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP6W - St Elphin's Church is the parish church of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 AD, and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to tradition the first church was built by Saint Oswald for his companion Elphin, who remained as the first priest there until his death in 679
The earliest fabric in the present church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. Some of the stained glass in the church is by Pugin. The church is dominated by its spire, 281 feet (86 m) high. It is the fifth highest parish church in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DC5C - A Toby Jug - also sometimes known as a Fillpot (or Philpot) - is a pottery jug in the form of a seated person, or the head of a recognizable person (often an English king). Typically the seated figure is a heavy-set, jovial man holding a mug of beer in one hand and a pipe of tobacco in the other and wearing 18th century attire: a long coat and a tricorn hat. The tricorn hat forms a pouring spout, often with a removable lid, and a handle is attached at the rear. Jugs depicting just the head and shoulders of a figure are also referred to as Toby Jugs, although these should strictly be called Character Jugs

This classic GnR track is from The Spaghetti Incident. The album was the fifth and is unique for the band, consisting entirely of cover versions, mostly of punk and glam rock songs of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was the last Guns N' Roses album to feature lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum.
The title is an inside joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as 'the Spaghetti Incident'. The meaning was explained by drummer Matt Sorum in a 1994 interview with Much Music and confirmed by Slash in his autobiography, 'Slash'.
The album has seen mixed reviews since its release. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Allmusic said 'As punk albums go, The Spaghetti Incident? lacks righteous anger and rage. As Guns N' Roses albums go, it's a complete delight, returning to the ferocious, hard-rocking days of Appetite for Destruction'.
Always nice to see some leather with lace.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HFE8 - Lews Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Le?dhais) is a Victorian era castle located west of the town of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The name Stornoway (Scottish Gaelic-'Steornabhagh') derives from 'Sjornavagr', the Old Norse for 'steering bay'. Stornoway has been settled since at least Viking times although there is archaeological evidence of Neolithic activity in the near vicinity of the town.
The Wicker Woman of Lews Castle looks extra spooky at dusk. She has now blown down and been recently damaged after many months of gliding through the grounds.
It is a clever nod to the cult classic film 'The Wicker Man' (or the Wickerman) which was set on a fictional Summerisle, a remote Hebridean island famed for its popular and unusually abundant fruit produce. The film stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland. Paul Giovanni composed the soundtrack.
The story centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl the locals claim never existed. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island practise a form of Celtic paganism.
The film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright and a few scenes in the village of Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.
The Wicker Man had moderate success and won first prize in the 1974 Festival of Fantastic Films in Paris, but largely slipped into obscurity. In 1977 the American film magazine Cinefantastique devoted a commemorative issue to the film, asserting that the film is the Citizen Kane of horror movies ? an oft-quoted phrase attributed to this issue
A remake, starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn and directed by Neil LaBute was released on September 1, 2006. It was a failure at the box office and today it has a significant cult following as an unintentional comedy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1JY - Stornoway (Gaelic: Ste?rnabhagh) is a town on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) of Scotland.
The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5941042356 - 'Sonic Youth 'Screaming Skull' - Play this track here.
\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Sonic Youth's history began when guitarist Thurston Moore moved to New York City in early 1976. Interested in punk, Moore joined the Coachmen, a guitar-based quartet, after arriving in the city. Lee Ranaldo, an art student at Binghamton University, became a fan of the Coachmen, and he and Moore were soon friends.
Ranaldo was a member of Glenn Branca's electric guitar ensemble, touring throughout the US and Europe. After the breakup of the Coachmen, Moore began jamming with Stanton Miranda, whose band, CKM, featured local artist Kim Gordon.
The name Sonic Youth came from combining the nickname of MC5's Fred 'Sonic' Smith with the trend of reggae artists, such as Big Youth.
Sonic Youth signed as the first act on Neutral Records. In December 1981 the group recorded five songs in a studio in New York's Radio City Music Hall. The material was released as the Sonic Youth mini-LP that, while largely ignored, was sent to a few key members of the US press that gave it favorable reviews.
During the 1984 tour of Europe, Sonic Youth's disastrous London debut (where the band's equipment malfunctioned and Moore consequently destroyed the equipment onstage in frustration) actually resulted in rave reviews in Sounds and the NME. That was probably I came across them.
In 1986 they moonlighted as Ciccone Youth. Track down the three track 12' - 'Into the Groove(y)' (a cover of Madonna's hit 'Into the Groove', incorporating snippets of her recording) and the short 'Tuff Titty Rap' on the A side (both performed by the Sonic Youth members), and 'Burnin' Up' on the B side.
This track is from the 1994 Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star album.

A cracking track from 1988's 'That Petrol Emotion'. They formed in 1984 from the ashes of the Derry Hitmakers, Bam Bam and the Calling and The Undertones. It was formed by guitarist John O'Neill and second guitarist Raymond Gorman who DJ'd together at the Derry 'Left Bank' club. Drummer and friend Ciaran McLaughlin joined next after having relocated from Derry to London, followed by John's brother and Undertones lead guitarist Damian O'Neill who played bass from 1985 until 1988 upon John's departure.
That Petrol Emotion themselves were also far more political and outspoken than the Undertones. 'Abandon' released on Virgin Records in March 1990 in the UK reached no. 73 in the single charts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43PN6 - St Thomas' Church is in Stockton Heath, to the south of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The present church was built in 1868 on the site of a former church that had been erected in 1838. It was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, the main benefactor being Sir Gilbert Greenall. The tower was added later although a full set of bells were not installed until 2016. The current ring of 10 bells consists of 8 bells donated from St. John the Baptist, Bollington supplemented with two new trebles cast by John Taylor & Co. A campaign to keep a tolling bell dating from 1883 dedicated to the wife of John Crosfield (son of Joseph Crosfield) took place in an attempt to retain the bell locally
It is constructed in pinkish-red sandstone with Westmorland slate roofs. Its plan consists of a four-bay nave with a south aisle under a parallel ridged roof, a south porch, a north transept, a north vestry, a two-bay chancel and a west tower. The tower is in four stages with an octagonal southeast turret and an embattled parapet.
The chancel is decorated with richly coloured patterned tilework and the reredos is of marble and embossed patterned tiles. The organ was built around 1880 by Young and Sons and rebuilt in 1963 by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool.
The churchyard contains the war graves of 31 service personnel, 17 from World War I and 14 from World War II

A track to enjoy with a drink in your hand or a bar of quality chocolate, this one.
The word 'morcheeba' is meant to indicate 'the way of cannabis'. This originated from 'MOR'(middle of the road) plus 'Cheeba' (informal name of cannabis).
Morcheeba mix pop, hip-hop, rock and electronica and are based in the UK. They have consisted of Paul &
Ross Godfrey, Skye Edwards and recently Daisy Martey, among many guests. Their debut album 'Who Can You Trust?' on China Records was released in April 1996.
This track comes from 'Big Calm' the second album which was more mainstream and pop-ey.
This is the best album to start with Morcheeba, if you check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Cast are an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La's and Wilkinson's former band Shack had split. Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam 'Skin' Tyson (guitar) and Keith O'Neill (drums) joined Cast in 1993.
Emerging from the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s, Cast signed to Polydor Records and their debut album All Change (1995) became the highest selling album for the label. Further commercial success continued with the albums Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), however the band's fourth album Beetroot (2001) was far less successful which led to the band's split soon after.
Cast are set to reunite for a UK tour in November 2010, although I haven't got a ticket yet. The last time I saw them was at a V festival in warrington on a bill with Pulp and the excellent Elastica.
The 1995 album 'All Change' is probably the one to track down if you fancy hearing some more of this stuff.
------------------------
Melrose Abbey is a Gothic-style abbey in Melrose, Scotland. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, on the request of King David I of Scotland. It was headed by the Abbot or Commendator of Melrose. Today the abbey is maintained by Historic Scotland (open all year
entrance charge). The ruins of Melrose are widely considered among the most beautiful of religious houses in the United Kingdom, being especially notable for a wealth of well-preserved figure-sculpture, and its architecture is considered to be some of the finest in Scotland.
The east end of the abbey was completed in 1146. Other buildings in the complex were added over the next 50 years. The abbey was built in the form of a St. John's cross. A considerable portion of the abbey is now in ruins, though a structure dating from 1590 is maintained as a museum open to the public.
Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles are buried at the abbey. The embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is also said to rest on the abbey's grounds, while the rest of his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey. In 1812, a stone coffin that some speculated was that of Michael Scot the philosopher and 'wizard', was found in an aisle in the abbey's south chancel.
This is an infra red joiner panorama taken with a Hoya R72 filter.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD5P - The churchyard is part of Wandel and Lamington Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Here is how I have often seen it. Possibly Bauhaus missed a trick in not using it as an album cover. It's reputed to be the home of Marion Braidfute, legendary wife of William Wallace. i have never stayed long enough to check if it has a pub or not.
There is a cake/desert called a 'Lamington'. Lamingtons are named after Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, who served as Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. According to legend Lamingtons were first served in Toowoomba when Lord Lamington took his entourage to Harlaxton House to escape the steamy heat of Brisbane. Lord Lamington was believed to have hated the dessert that had been named in his honour, referring to them as those bloody poofy woolly biscuits.
