Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BGC - Festival-branded deckchair promoting Warrington Food & Drink Festival, photographed on the lawn at Bank Park in front of the famous Golden Gates and Warrington Town Hall on Sunday 17 May 2026. The image shows a large blue promotional deckchair printed with the festival logo, food and drink illustrations and the @WeAreWarrington branding, set against the ornate black-and-gold gates and bright spring sunshine. It is a strong editorial image for stories about Warrington events, town-centre festivals, local food and drink promotion, place marketing, civic spaces, community leisure, tourism, public realm activity and the use of heritage settings for modern visitor events.
The 2026 Warrington Food & Drink Festival took place across Bank Park and the grounds of Warrington Town Hall, bringing together around 80 traders, food stalls, drinks businesses and family entertainment over the weekend. This picture focuses on one of the event's visual branding features rather than the crowd itself, using the deckchair as a foreground prop that instantly conveys relaxation, hospitality and outdoor festival culture. The scene also captures the weather and season clearly, with green grass, leafy trees, blue sky and fair-weather cloud suggesting a pleasant sunny spring day in Cheshire, in the heart of the town centre.
Warrington Town Hall, originally built in 1750 as Bank Hall for merchant Thomas Patten and designed by James Gibbs, provides an important historical backdrop. The Golden Gates are one of Warrington's best-known landmarks and help root the image firmly in the town's civic identity. As a result, the photograph works well for editorial use covering Warrington, Cheshire tourism, food festivals, town-centre regeneration, cultural programming, local business promotion, hospitality, public events and civic pride. The combination of branded deckchair, heritage gates and seasonal sunshine gives the image a colourful, recognisable and commercially useful sense of place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4MAD - Conspiracy placards displayed in Warrington town centre near Golden Square shopping centre show messages opposing BritCard digital ID and net zero, alongside a large claim that There is no climate crisis. The scene records how online-influenced narratives about identity systems, climate policy, government control and surveillance can appear in ordinary public spaces used by Saturday shoppers, families and pedestrians. The boards use bold warning language, simplified graphics and emotive claims about biometric data, personal freedom, public spending and the cost of net zero, making the image relevant to editorial coverage of misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy culture, political protest and public trust. The climate message should be treated cautiously as misinformation, not as a balanced scientific position: the Met Office states that there is overwhelming evidence that climate change is affecting the health of the planet and the wellbeing of billions of people. The digital ID message is also politically charged, mixing genuine civil liberties concerns with stronger claims about coercion and control. UK government material presents digital ID as a way to prove identity and access services, while parliamentary and public debate continues around privacy, compulsion, exclusion and data governance. This documentary photograph can illustrate climate denial, anti-net-zero campaigns, identity-card opposition, culture war politics, fringe street campaigning, public communication, information disorder, distrust in institutions and the movement of internet narratives into local civic life. The Warrington retail setting contrasts routine shopping with contested political messaging. The weather appears dry and overcast or shaded, with grey paving and street furniture giving the image a plain public-realm context. The photograph should be captioned as a record of conspiracy and misinformation material being displayed, not as endorsement of the claims.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APA5 - Exterior view of Manchester Poetry Library at Manchester Metropolitan University's Grosvenor East building on Cavendish Street, just off Oxford Road in Manchester. The photograph shows the modern red and grey facade, entrance signage for Crosscanon East, and the large Manchester Poetry Library window lettering, making it a clear editorial image for literature, public libraries, creative writing, university culture and Manchester's role as a UNESCO City of Literature. Manchester Metropolitan University describes the library as a public space for anyone interested in or curious about poetry, while the university's contact details place it at the Grosvenor Building, Cavendish Street, Manchester M15 6BG. Manchester City of Literature says the library opened in 2021 as the North West's first public poetry library, with a mission to widen access to poetry and support the creation and performance of new writing from primary school level to professional publication. The image is useful for features on poetry collections, writing workshops, public engagement, spoken word, poetry readings, literary education, university libraries, arts and humanities, Manchester Writing School, book culture, community writing and the Oxford Road Corridor. The building's clean contemporary signage and campus setting link the library to the wider creative ecosystem of Manchester Metropolitan University, including theatre, writing, journalism, language, performance and cultural research. It can support articles about access to the arts, literary tourism, creative learning, small press publishing, poetry archives, events, exhibitions, open mic culture, young writers, multilingual poetry and the city's strong independent literary scene. The photograph also works for education, cultural policy, student life, visitor guides, arts funding, library provision and city branding. Its documentary street-level view is practical for stock use because it clearly identifies the venue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EBGJNR - The Village Green in Levenshulme, Manchester, is shown with a colourful community mural painted across a low brick wall, featuring large white lettering, leaf shapes, butterflies, ladybirds and a striking blue tit perched on a branch. The image captures a small urban green space with benches, planting beds, winter-bare tree branches and the signage of Levenshulme Auto Repair Centre visible above the wall, placing the scene in a mixed residential, commercial and neighbourhood setting. It is useful for editorial stories about Greater Manchester street art, Levenshulme regeneration, community-led public realm improvements, urban nature, local identity, pocket parks, neighbourhood greening, mural art and the reuse of modest city spaces as places to sit, meet and add colour to the street. The blue tit and insects give the mural an accessible wildlife theme, linking the photograph to biodiversity, nature in the city, bird art, environmental education, urban ecology and the softer visual language often used in community arts projects. The setting also reflects Levenshulme's wider character as a diverse south Manchester suburb known for independent shops, railway links, markets, terraced streets, community activism and changing urban culture. The parked benches, damp paving and overcast light give the photograph a documentary feel rather than a polished promotional look, showing how public art sits alongside everyday garages, brick walls, railings and local businesses. The image has stock value for articles about Manchester neighbourhoods, street murals, urban renewal, local parks, anti-graffiti art, community pride, public art funding, social value, placemaking, high street backlands and the role of small green spaces in dense inner-city districts. It can also illustrate wider themes around bringing colour to overlooked corners, creating calmer public spaces, and using birds, flowers and insects as optimistic symbols of local environmental care.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EBGJP2 - Colourful public art scene at Levenshulme Village Green in Greater Manchester, showing a decorated Bee in the City sculpture in front of a large green wall mural with flowers, birds, benches and local neighbourhood lettering. The bee sculpture is part of Manchester's worker bee story, a civic symbol associated with industry, collective effort, resilience and local identity, and was inspired by the Bee in the City art trail that filled Greater Manchester with giant painted bees in 2018. This Levenshulme example carries painted references to the area, including terraced streets, local buildings, railway or station imagery and community life, making it useful for editorial coverage of south Manchester, public art, local pride, placemaking, neighbourhood parks and community-led environmental improvement. The scene combines sculpture, mural painting, seating, grass and winter tree branches, giving a documentary view of a modest pocket green space on the busy A6 corridor. It has strong stock value for stories about Manchester neighbourhoods, Levenshulme culture, street art, civic branding, bee symbolism, community gardens, outdoor sculpture, local heritage, urban biodiversity, public realm investment and the use of art to brighten overlooked everyday places. The large mural behind the sculpture adds wildlife themes, with painted birds, blossoms and greenery that connect the image to nature in the city, wellbeing, small public spaces and environmental education. Levenshulme is a diverse residential district between Manchester city centre and Stockport, known for independent shops, markets, terraced housing, railway links, community campaigning and changing urban identity. The photograph suits features on Greater Manchester tourism, neighbourhood regeneration, city pride, arts trails, community participation, public space design and the continuing popularity of the Manchester bee as a local emblem.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJXB - A view from the Exchange Square entrance of Manchester Arndale, looking out across the square towards Manchester Cathedral and the surrounding cityscape. The photograph was taken in daylight under clear conditions, creating a bright, open atmosphere that reflects a busy and positive city-centre retail environment.
Manchester Arndale is one of the UK's largest inner-city shopping centres and plays a central role in the economic and social life of the city centre. Originally developed in the 1970s, the complex was extensively rebuilt and redesigned following damage sustained during the 1996 IRA bombing, an event that reshaped both the physical fabric and future direction of central Manchester.
The modern Arndale, characterised by glass façades and open sightlines, was designed to reconnect retail space with surrounding streets and public squares, including Exchange Square. From this vantage point, historic buildings such as Manchester Cathedral sit alongside contemporary commercial architecture, illustrating the layered development of the city.
The presence of shoppers moving through the space reflects the recovery and resilience of Manchester's retail core, as well as the continued importance of physical city-centre shopping in an era of online retail. The image is well suited for editorial use covering urban regeneration, retail economics, consumer behaviour, city-centre vitality and the evolving identity of modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP33E - The Spacer mural by contemporary artist Shane Sutton dominates the side wall of a building in Coleraine town centre, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The large monochrome artwork depicts an astronaut in a space suit reaching outward from a circular halo, creating a striking illusion of movement and human connection against the dark background.
In the foreground, two pedestrians walk past the mural at street level, their presence and proximity emphasising the scale of the artwork and the way it integrates into everyday urban life. The positioning of the astronaut's outstretched arm creates a visual interaction with passers-by, reinforcing the mural's theme of connection, exploration, and curiosity within a public setting.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents how contemporary street art has become part of Coleraine's townscape, contributing to urban regeneration and cultural identity. The scene captures the relationship between public art and ordinary street activity, showing how large-scale murals can engage pedestrians and transform otherwise utilitarian building facades into landmarks of local creativity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBN9EC - This image shows a traditional No Ball Games sign, commonly found on UK council and social housing estates, mounted against a dark brick wall. Such signs have been widely used by local authorities and housing providers to regulate play and reduce noise, damage, or nuisance in shared residential spaces.
The phrase No Ball Games has become a cultural shorthand in Britain, often referenced in discussions about urban childhood, public space, social housing management, and community control. While originally intended as a practical estate-management measure, the signage is now frequently used symbolically in media and policy commentary about youth provision, play spaces, and social behaviour.
The image is well suited to editorial and conceptual use covering social housing, council estates, urban life, local government policy, childhood and play, community rules, and British social history, as well as nostalgic or critical perspectives on post-war housing design and regulation.

Warrington Borough Council developed and published their Local Plan in 2014 based on population growth statistics at that time, these figures are now substantially out of date. 55 Councils across the UK have now abandoned their local plans as The Homes & Communities Agency confirmed that housing targets are a guide and not mandatory. Warrington Borough Councils plan includes removing large areas of Greenbelt Land all over the Borough for housing developments and business parks.
All areas will be affected
Appleton, Appleton Thorn, Stretton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Croft and Culcheth for housing developments. New roads will be punched through existing areas to access the new housing estates, for example through Grappenhall Sports Club across the Bridgewater Canal, affecting Stockton Heath and Stockton Lane. Another road is planned across fields at the back of Stretton towards the M56.
These areas are all currently green fields, sports fields and wildlife habitats.
All of these areas have new housing stock built in the last 10 years, surely enough Greenbelt has been lost already. There are enough brownfield sites across Warrington for thousands of houses without having to dig up Greenbelt. The Greenbelt areas are the 'Green Lungs' of Warrington, the trees and plants store carbon and clean the air we breathe. The people of Warrington are now saying 'NO' to losing any more Greenbelt. Our elected representatives need to listen to us. During Covid we all learned how important fresh air and open space is to our survival.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R6AHX2 - The Walker Art Gallery is an art gallery in Liverpool, which houses one of the largest art collections in England outside London. It is part of the National Museums Liverpool group.
History of the Gallery
The Walker Art Gallery's collection dates from 1819 when the Liverpool Royal Institution acquired 37 paintings from the collection of William Roscoe, who had to sell his collection following the failure of his banking business, though it was saved from being broken up by his friends and associates.
In 1843, the Royal Institution's collection was displayed in a purpose-built gallery next to the Institution's main premises. In 1850 negotiations by an association of citizens to take over the Institution's collection, for display in a proposed art gallery, library and museum, came to nothing.
The collection grew over the following decades: in 1851 Liverpool Town Council bought Liverpool Academy's diploma collection and further works were acquired from the Liverpool Society for the Fine Arts, founded in 1858. The competition between the academy and society eventually led to both collapsing.
William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860, named after a Liverpool merchant whose generosity enabled the Town Council to act upon an 1852 Act of Parliament which allowed the establishment of a public library, museum and art gallery, and in 1871 the council organised the first Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, held at the new library and museum.
The gallery is housed in a neo-Classical building located on William Brown Street (the only street in the United Kingdom to consist of nothing other than museums, galleries and libraries).
The Walker's collection includes Italian and Netherlandish paintings from 1300 to 1550, European art from 1550 to 1900, including works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, 18th and 19th-century British art, including a major collection of Victorian painting and many Pre-Raphaelite works, a wide collection of prints & drawings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPF - This image shows a street name sign for Vinegar Alley in Walthamstow, East London, clearly displaying the E17 postcode. The sign is mounted on a metal pole and set against a backdrop of leafy green trees, giving a strong sense of place within a residential urban neighbourhood.
Street signs such as this are widely used in editorial, travel and lifestyle imagery to represent location, navigation and local identity. The distinctive street name adds character and curiosity, making the image suitable for illustrating themes of London neighbourhoods, wayfinding, urban exploration and everyday street detail.
Photographed in daylight during the warmer months, the surrounding foliage suggests a calm, well-established residential area. The simple composition focuses attention on the typography and wording of the sign, allowing it to be used as a contextual image for stories about place, community, property, local history or urban living in East London.
Vinegar Alley forms part of the wider streetscape of Walthamstow, an area that has become increasingly popular for its village atmosphere, green spaces and strong sense of local character within the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYBHA3 - A Prayer Room is an opportunity to draw aside, take time out and meet with God. It is a dedicated space where people can go to pray and seek God, to intercede and petition. Jesus withdrew to pray (Mt 14:13
Lk 5:12-16
Jn 6:14-16), not at the expense of serving the Father but in order to be more effective in that.
The key is not about the physical space but about making space for relationship with God who from the beginning of time longs to be with His people and connect with them. We know that God is everywhere and we can meet with God anywhere and everywhere, but a Prayer Room with time and place set aside can be an important part of growing in relationship with God. It's a great addition to be part of continual prayer in local church life and helpful being in a place with no distractions with focuses for prayer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8NX - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NFE - Clayton Square Shopping Centre is an inner-city shopping centre located in Liverpool, England. It is in close proximity to Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Central railway stations. It is the city's fourth largest shopping centre behind Liverpool One, St. John's Shopping Centre and Metquarter. Clayton Square sees tough competition from the likes of Liverpool One, St.Johns, Metquarter, Church Street, Lord Street and Bold Street.
In April 2010, Swedish hardware store Clas Ohlson opened its sixth UK store in Clayton Square occupying the former premises of Zavvi.
All businesses located in Clayton Square Shopping Centre are members of Retail and Leisure Liverpool BID. Clayton Square is one of the key shopping centres within the city, and works in partnership with other stakeholders in to improve the city centre.
In the summer of 2014 a major refit was begun, which was completed in December 2015. The refurbishment converted smaller units into larger retail units, opened the mall to its full atrium height, and public access to the upper floor was removed. The entrance on to Church Street was closed and converted into a unit, which is occupied by Wildwood Restaurant. Half of the floor space on the upper floor was turned in to a Gym whilst the other half will be a bowling alley (Lane 7)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NH3 - Built in 171617 as a charity school, Bluecoat Chambers in School Lane is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool, England. Following the Liverpool Blue Coat School's move to another site in 1906, the building was rented from 1907 onwards by the Sandon Studios Society. Based on the presence of this art society and the subsequent formation of the Bluecoat Society of Arts in 1927, the successor organisation laid claim to being the oldest arts centre in Great Britain, now called the Bluecoat.
The school was founded in 1708 by the Reverend Robert Styth (died 1713), rector of Liverpool, and Bryan Blundell, a sea captain and later twice Mayor of Liverpool (172122 and 172829). Originally constructed in 171617, the building was extended until 1718 to function as a boarding school. By the following year, it had 50 children, with room for 100 more, and construction was finally completed in 1725
On 3 May 1941, during the Liverpool Blitz, the concert hall and adjoining rooms were severely damaged by an incendiary bomb and during the following night the rear wing was destroyed by a bomb blast. Restoration took place after the war, being completed by 1951. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, having been designated on 28 June 1952.
The Bluecoat Display Centre, a contemporary craft gallery, opened in the rear courtyard in 1959. Being known as the Bluecoat Arts Centre from the 1980s, it is now simply called the Bluecoat. From 2005, the building was further restored and a new wing added. It was reopened in March 2008 to coincide with Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6HJFR - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester. It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GB2J - The Mander Centre is a major shopping centre in Wolverhampton City Centre, in Wolverhampton, England, developed by Manders Holdings Plc, the paint, inks and property conglomerate, between 1968 and 1974. The site occupies four and a half acres comprising the old Georgian works and offices of the Mander family firm, founded in 1773, as well as the site of the former Queens Arcade (promoted privately by Charles Tertius Mander), which had stood on the site since 1902.
When the main part of the Mander Centre opened in 1968, the Central Arcade retained its Edwardian architecture and was refurbished as the main entrance to the Mander Centre from Dudley Street.
In May 1974 the Central Arcade was destroyed by a severe fire that reduced it to rubble, which was declared unsafe and was subsequently demolished. The area was later rebuilt as the entrance to the centre
The centre was refurbished in 1987, when it was described as a covered pedestrianised shopping complex at the centre of the principal shopping area of Wolverhampton with more than 150 shops.
In 2003 the centre embarked on a further multi-million pound refurbishment programme. It was an opportunity to complete the enclosure of the centre to make it fully climate controlled. The marble floor in the entire centre was replaced along with the relocation of the escalators and stairways. The biggest change was the creation of the large New Look store which took over numerous stores.
Throughout 2016 and 2017, the centre was refurbished and configured as part of the £25 million investment, and a series of new larger stores was created, forcing some stores to close down and relocate within the centre. WH Smith and Tesco were closed, and Superdrug relocated. The reconfiguration was also to include new escalators and lifts, the removal of the Lower Central Arcade and the relocation of the toilets.
On 18 November 2016 H&M was the first major store to open as part of the shopping centre's multimillion-pound redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFEM - Winston Churchill Memorial Garden is a small urban park discreetly tucked behind the Lower High Street shops. The gardens have a number of historical elements such as the formal rose garden, pergola, clipped yew avenue and St Mary's Mission building. It is still possible to see some of the headstones along the northern perimeter wall. Find out more about the history of the park.
Rose garden
In the centre of the rose garden stands a drinking fountain which is surrounded by words, phrases and simple line drawings gathered from local children and adults to symbolise how they feel about the gardens. The images are pressed into blue engineering bricks, once used on the railway line that runs parallel to the gardens. The project was jointly funded by Cheltenham Borough Council, the Lower High Street Partnership and the Regional Arts Council.
Play area
The fenced play area with its woodland trail, living tree sculptures and spring bulbs has a variety of new play equipment. The play equipment was chosen by pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School and provides play facilities for a wider age range. New equipment includes a multi-activity unit, roundabout, inclusive play springie, swings, a pole spin and talk tubes.
Informal recreational area
The area south of the play area is used for informal recreation. The eastern boundary has been planted with native dog rose and wild flowers to enhance the urban park for wildlife and people alike.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4CACR - Marple War Memorial, erected in 1922 in Memorial Park, Marple , is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20
* Design: an allegorical female figure clutching a cross to her breast, standing on top of a crenellated square plinth of polished granite
* Group value: with the Grade II-listed Council Offices, sundial and stock ends.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw an unprecedented wave of public commemoration with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised in Marple as permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Marple War Memorial Committee was convened on 17 February 1919, and discussed a number of schemes to commemorate the war: scholarships, a hospital, a public park, swimming baths, the endowment of lectures and a public hall. These were reduced in subsequent meetings to a hospital, scholarships and the endowment of preachers. Scholarships and a hospital were found to be too expensive, and a donation of land allowed the scheme to be revised to comprise a memorial park.
The park was originally to be named the Carver-Barlow Park, after the donors of the land, but this was later changed to the War Memorial Park. Proposals were added to include a memorial in the park, and funds were raised through public subscription, dances and whist drives for the memorial and the layout of the park. The park was gifted to the Urban District Council, on the proviso that there was no provision for football or cricket

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P06T - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTNA3R - THERE is good news for electric vehicle drivers in and around Warrington, as the council has announced free electric charging at its Time Square car park and Warrington West station.
The initiative, which has been confirmed for at least the next six months, will help to support those who are making the switch from petrol and diesel to electric.
There are currently 56 charging points at the Time Square car park one of the highest number of charging points in a single location in the country with another 12 charging points available at the new Warrington West station.
The move to offering free electric vehicle charging comes after the council's climate emergency declaration in June.
The plans to encourage electric vehicle travel also support the council's Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels within the main, busy traffic routes leading into and around the town.
Cllr Judith Guthrie, cabinet member for environment, who drives an electric car herself, said: It's great news that I'm able to announce free charging points for electric vehicle users here in Warrington. We're committed to doing all we can to help people become more environmentally-friendly in and around the borough - more at https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/18243487.free-electric-vehicle-charging-points-warrington-west-time-square-car-parks/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTF4CE - History
We formed in 2012 with the original aim of transforming an area of wasteland behind Shipley Fire Station into a community food garden. Unfortunately due to due constraints over securing a lease for this site from Bradford Council, we are no longer able to pursue this project.
In 2015 we began working with Sustainable Saltaire to look after the Sunday School Garden in Caroline Street car park. In 2016 we developed two new edible growing sites: Plot at Platform 1 at Saltaire Station and the Japanese Edible Garden on Exhibition Road, supported by Shipley College. We also work with Saltaire Village Society to help look after the raised beds in the Wash House Garden on Caroline Street (edge of Edward Street and Amelia Street).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTF4D5 - Exhibition Road is the only road in the village to have been named subsequent to the 1876 death of Saltaire's founder Sir Titus Salt. Initially lacking buildings fronting onto it, it was unnamed prior to the Royal Yorkshire Jubilee Exhibition, held there in 1887.
One of the outstanding successes of the original township was its Schools of Science and Art. These Schools, housed in the Institute in Victoria Road, proved so successful that by the mid 1880s they needed more space. At the suggestion of Titus Salt Jr, son of Sir Titus, the Salt School governors of the time resolved to erect a new facility, behind the existing Institute. The development was to cost £12,000, to be raised from an exhibition which for its five month duration would use the new building, together with 12 acres of land to the east.
The Royal Yorkshire Jubilee Exhibition was opened by Princess Beatrice on 6th May, 1887. For the one shilling (5p) entry fee, any visitor would have been impressed with the Exhibition's scope to the north of the new School was a Concert Hall seating 3,000
a covered avenue extended as far as the site of the present Baker St, with a series of Exhibition Courts along its length. Other features included a maze, a Japanese village, a toboggan run, and a working dairy. An electrically powered lighthouse, mounted atop the new building, shone out across the surrounding countryside.
Today the 1887 Exhibition Building is home to our prestigious Shipley College, and Exhibition Road marks part of the eastern boundary of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire.

This is the first time this vast work has been seen in the UK. A Year in Normandie joins together some of the 220 iPad works Hockney created throughout 2020 using a specially adapted version of his favoured app, printed onto paper, and shown in a continuous run.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K02F42 - The original building was designed by the Coop's in-house architect F.E.L. Harris. It opened in 1906 as the headquarters of the Cooperative Wholesale Society (CWS) and was called New Central Building. It was designed to look like a headquarters building and still does.
Take a look at that façade. It is pure powerhouse Edwardian, an almost bombastic expression of commercial and national confidence. This was a time when, like it or not, the British Empire was at its peak and the nation felt big.
Hanover is Baroque, a Classical-style formed of big bold elements, nothing is reticent, subtlety is shunned. The base of the exterior walls are of Aberdeen granite, elsewhere there's red brick with Derbyshire sandstone dressings. The most immediately eye-catching elements are the giant order columns at second floor level, then a fiercely heavy cornice, followed by a sweet but strong arcade high in the sky.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TX - As one of the few explicitly gender-separated spaces, the toilet has become a prominent site of conflict and a focal point for gender-critical' feminism. In this article we draw upon an AHRC-funded project, Around the Toilet, to reflect upon and critique trans-exclusionary and trans-hostile narratives of toilet spaces. Such narratives include ciscentric, heteronormative and gender essentialist positions within toilet research and activism which, for example, equate certain actions and bodily functions (such as menstruation) to a particular gender, decry the need for all-gender toilets, and cast suspicion upon the intentions of trans women in public toilet spaces. These include explicitly transmisogynist discourses perpetuated largely by those calling themselves gender-critical' feminists, but also extend to national media, right-wing populist discourses and beyond. We use Around the Toilet data to argue that access to safe and comfortable toilets plays a fundamental role in making trans lives possible. Furthermore, we contend that whether naive, ignorant or explicitly transphobic trans-exclusionary positions do little to improve toilet access for the majority, instead putting trans people, and others with visible markers of gender difference, at a greater risk of violence, and participating in the dangerous homogenisation of womanhood. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16AW8 - Camden Collective is a registered charity offering free hot-desking space and subsidised offices for creative start-ups in the heart of Camden Town. We take on temporary leases of empty building and bring them back to life, filling them with an ever-growing community of creative young people. We give start-ups the chance to take risks, experiment, and grow in a low-cost way.
The Collective journey started 10 years ago. Since 2009, it has occupied 18 spaces and has introduced various projects, such as: pop-up shops, free courses, accelerators, commissioning public realm projects, free events, and the Camden Create Festival. We have an evolving model, but our community of like-minded individuals are at the heart of what we do, as well as the entrepreneurs and stakeholders who help us to grow and support our next exciting stages of development.
Camden Collective is run by Camden Town Unlimited, the Business Improvement District for Camden Town. In the past, we relied on grants and raising revenue to keep up our activities. Now we're fully self-sufficient, with income from lockable offices paying for free hot-desking, running costs of the project, and any renovations needed to maintain our hub, or create new ones
Camden Collective is just one of Camden Town Unlimited's forward-thinking projects. We're the same team that's behind the Camden Highline
a project transforming the disused railway between Camden Town and King's Cross, and Euston Town
a business improvement district with a focus on air quality, transport and identity. We're also the co-founders of Alternative Camden
a new type of innovation district for Camden.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C6RE7K - Anthriscus sylvestris, known as cow parsley, wild chervil, wild beaked parsley, or keck, is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant in the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), genus Anthriscus. It is also sometimes called mother-die (especially in the UK), a name that is also applied to the common hawthorn. It is native to Europe, western Asia and northwestern Africa
in the south of its range in the Mediterranean region, it is limited to higher altitudes. It is related to other diverse members of Apiaceae, such as parsley, carrot, hemlock and hogweed. It is often confused with Daucus carota which is known as Queen Anne's lace or wild carrot, also a member of the Apiaceae
The hollow stem grows to a height of 60170 cm (2467 in), branching to umbels of small white flowers. Flowering time is mid spring to early summer.
The tripinnate leaves are 1530 cm (5.911.8 in) long and have a triangular form. The leaflets are ovate and subdivided.
Cow parsley grows in sunny to semi-shaded locations in meadows and at the edges of hedgerows and woodland. It is a particularly common sight by the roadside. It is sufficiently common and fast-growing to be considered a nuisance weed in gardens. Cow parsley's ability to grow rapidly through rhizomes and to produce large quantities of seeds in a single growing season has made it an invasive species in many areas of the United States. Vermont has listed cow parsley on its Watch List of invasive species, while Massachusetts has banned the sale of the plant.[citation needed] It is classed as a Class B Noxious Weed in the State of Washington since 1989, where its sale is also banned. In Iceland, cow parsley has been classified as an alien invasive species

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2NW - Eastside City Park is a 6.75 acre (2.73 ha) urban park located in the Eastside district of Birmingham City Centre. Designed by architects Patel taylor with landscape architect Allain Provost, the park was opened to the public on 5 December 2012 at a cost of £11.75 million. Lining the frontage of Millennium Point, the park provides 14,300 square metres of landscaped green space, 310 trees, a 110 metres (360 ft) canal water feature and a public square incorporating 21 jet fountains.
In 2004, discussions began with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), outlining the preliminary processes regarding the development of the site.
A May 2007 Big Lottery Fund request was filed for £25million, but was rejected in October of the same year. Birmingham City Council later pledged £5million to begin the project.
The Eastside City Park runs from the remaining portion of Park Street Gardens, northwards past the Masshouse development where and in an easterly direction along Curzon Street, past Curzon Street railway station and Millennium Point
the park terminates at the front of Birmingham City University's Parkside campus building.
The park was designed by Architects Patel Taylor with French Landscape Architect Allain Provost who gained commission for the project in 2006. Development of the park commenced in August 2011 by contractors Wates. The park partially opened to the public on 5 December 2012 and officially opened on 16 March 2013.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRG - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5XF - The park contains the Alan Turing memorial statue, which depicts the father of modern computing sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. The park was chosen because, It's got the university science buildings ... on one side and its got all the gay bars on the other side, where apparently he spent most of his evenings
The statue was unveiled on 23 June, Turing's birthday, in 2001. It was conceived by Richard Humphry, a barrister from Stockport, who set up the Alan Turing Memorial Fund in order to raise the necessary funds. Humphry had come up with the idea of a statue after seeing Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Code starring the actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and Jacobi became the patron of the fund. Glyn Hughes, an industrial sculptor from Adlington near Westhoughton, was commissioned to sculpt the statue. The Fund eventually raised around £15,000, which was far short of the £50,000 needed to have the statue cast in Britain. No major computer company donated to the fund, which was, according to the sculptor, because Turing was not American. The statue was cast in China.
Turing is shown holding an applea symbol classically used to represent forbidden love, as well as being the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the object that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation, and the means of Turing's own death. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912-1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it would appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'.
A plinth at the statue's feet says 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation saying 'Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beautya beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.' The sculptor buried his old Amstrad computer, which was an early popular home computer, under the plinth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN2X - A fortune cookie is a crisp and sugary cookie wafer usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil with a piece of paper inside, a fortune, usually an aphorism, or a vague prophecy. The message inside may also include a Chinese phrase with translation and/or a list of lucky numbers used by some as lottery numbers. Fortune cookies are often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States, Canada and other countries, but they are not Chinese in origin. The exact origin of fortune cookies is unclear, though various immigrant groups in California claim to have popularized them in the early 20th century. They most likely originated from cookies made by Japanese immigrants to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Japanese version did not have the Chinese lucky numbers and was eaten with tea.
Fortune cookies before the early 20th century were all made by hand. The fortune cookie industry changed dramatically after the fortune cookie machine was invented by Shuck Yee from Oakland, California. The machine allowed for mass production of fortune cookies which subsequently allowed the cookies to drop in price to become the novelty and courtesy dessert many Americans are familiar with after their meals at most Chinese restaurants today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6XE - The Young Vic Theatre is a performing arts venue located on The Cut, near the South Bank, in the London Borough of Lambeth.
The Young Vic was established by Frank Dunlop in 1970. Kwame Kwei-Armah has been Artistic Director since February 2018, succeeding David Lan.
History
In the period after World War II, a Young Vic Company was formed in 1946 by director George Devine as an offshoot of the Old Vic Theatre School for the purpose of performing classic plays for audiences aged nine to fifteen.
This was discontinued in 1948 when Devine and the entire faculty resigned from the Old Vic, but in 1969 Frank Dunlop became founder-director of The Young Vic theatre with Scapino, his free adaptation of Molière's The Cheats of Scapin, presented at the new venue as a National Theatre production, opening on 11 September 1970 and starring Jim Dale in the title role with designs by Carl Toms (decor) and Maria Björnson (costumes).
Initially part of the National Theatre, the Young Vic Theatre became an independent body in 1974.
In the words of Laurence Olivier, then director of the National Theatre: Here we think to develop plays for young audiences, an experimental workshop for authors, actors and producers. The aim was to create an accessible theatre which offered high quality at low cost in an informal environment. The aim was to appeal to young audiences, but this time not specifically to children.

Castle Green neighbours the popular Museum of Somerset, the award-winning Castle Hotel, the busy Taunton Bus Station and is located within seconds of the town centre shopping area.
Castle Green has a highway through to the Castle Hotel and therefore highway management is also required as part of an event management plan

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307AH - Altrincham Market is shown busy with shoppers, flower stalls and independent traders in the regenerated market quarter of Altrincham, Trafford, Greater Manchester. The image shows the open market area beside the timber-framed covered structure, with potted plants, bouquets, gazebos, luggage and retail stalls set out across the paved public space. People browse and chat in a relaxed town-centre setting under a cloudy early-season sky, giving the photograph a strong everyday documentary feel. Altrincham has long market-town roots, with its market charter dating back to 1290, but the modern revival of the Market House and surrounding streets has made it a widely cited example of successful high-street regeneration in North West England. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of retail revival, town centre renewal, local authority regeneration, independent food halls, markets, small businesses, place-making, public realm investment, hospitality-led footfall and the reinvention of traditional shopping streets. It also works for comparisons with destination food markets such as Borough Market in Southwark, while retaining a distinct Greater Manchester character: smaller scale, suburban, mixed retail and strongly linked to local community life. The timber canopy, brick buildings, white tents and outdoor flower displays show a market environment that blends heritage, leisure, food, drink, shopping and social activity rather than relying only on conventional chain retail. Altrincham Market has been associated with the town's wider comeback, drawing visitors, raising footfall and supporting cafés, bars, restaurants and specialist traders. This photograph can illustrate debates about changing town centres, the decline of old retail models, the value of markets as anchors, council regeneration, independent enterprise, sustainable local shopping, visitor economy, Trafford prosperity and the appeal of public spaces where people can shop, eat, meet and linger.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ656 - Space heaters are fixed or portable heaters in a room. This includes open coal, wood or coke fires, gas fires, portable gas fires (LPG heaters), electric fires and heaters, and oil and paraffin heaters.
What are the main causes of heating appliance fires?
Space heaters regularly cause fatalities in the home. Most accidents are caused by people's behaviour rather than technical faults in the appliances themselves. For example, standing or sitting too close to the heater, allowing clothing or other items to come too close, or leaving heaters on overnight can all cause accidents.
Who is most at risk?
Those in the age ranges 0-4 years and 70 years and over have the highest risk. Women over 70 are most at risk, as there are more women than men in this higher age group. Men are more at risk in the 30-69 age range, which may be because they are more likely to be impaired by drink or drugs at this age, or because they are more likely to tackle a fire on their own.
People living alone, those living in terraced houses and houses in multiple occupation, or in rented accommodation, and those on low incomes all tend to be at greater risk.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4HMJ9 - Liverpool Exchange railway station was a railway station located in the city centre of Liverpool, England. Of the four terminal stations in Liverpool's city centre, Exchange station was the only station not accessed via a tunnel.
The station was badly damaged during World War II and lost a large proportion of the trainshed roof, which was never rebuilt, remaining an iron frame. The station's long distance services were switched to Liverpool Lime Street in the 1960s, and, as a terminus, the station became redundant in the late 1970s, when its remaining local services switched to the newly opened Merseyrail tunnels under Liverpool city centre. It was closed in 1977, being replaced by the new Moorfields underground station nearby.
Station construction and opening
Tithebarn Street as it was between opening in 1850 and reconstruction in 188688
The grandly-appointed station opened on 13 May 1850, replacing an earlier temporary station at Great Howard Street further north up the track. The station was designed by John Hawkshaw. The station had two names because the joint owners could not agree on a name. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) named the station Liverpool Exchange Station with the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) naming the station Liverpool Tithebarn Street.
On 13 August 1859, the LYR absorbed the ELR, from which date the name of the station was Liverpool Exchange.[2][3] From 1 October 1850 trains of the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway (LCSR) began to run into Exchange/Tithebarn Street station with three companies using the terminus. The LCSR became part of the LYR on 14 June 1855. By 13 August 1859 the LYR had absorbed the other two companies using the terminus leaving only one operator.
The station was the terminus of the ELR's line to Preston, the LYR's route to Bolton and the LCSR routes to Crosby and Southport.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG38W1 - Princes Square is a shopping centre on Buchanan Street in central Glasgow, Scotland. It was developed in 1986 to a design by Edinburgh architects, the Hugh Martin Partnership. The new five-storey, 10,450-square-metre (112,500 sq ft) retail centre occupies a pre-existing cobbled square dating from 1841, which was reconfigured by enclosing the entire space below a new clear glass domed and vaulted roof. An expansion was completed in summer 1999, extending the centre into Springfield Court and providing a further 1,860 square metres (20,000 sq ft) of retail area and a new retail frontage to Queen Street.
The original cellars of the existing buildings were excavated to provide additional space. Inside the square, new galleries and stairs give access to the upper storeys. The original sandstone facades were preserved around the modern interior. The centre is adorned with decorative glass, tiling, lighting, timber and metalwork, designed by artists and craftsmen.
The writer Bill Bryson referred to Princes Square as one of the most intelligent pieces of urban renewal.
The Hugh Martin Partnership earned several design awards for Princes Square, including the RIBA Scottish Regional Award for Architecture (1988), the Edinburgh Architectural Association Centenary Medal (1989), and a Civic Trust Award (1989). The original fabric has been protected as a category B listed building since 1970.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39AE - The St. Enoch Centre is a shopping mall located in the central area of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. The Architects were the GMW Architects. The construction, undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine, began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public in May 1989. It was officially opened by the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in February of the following year.
Located on the site of the former St Enoch Station, the building is just off Glasgow's famous shopping thoroughfare, Argyle Street and overlooks the historic St. Enoch Square and the original Subway station building (on the right of the photograph). The present St Enoch subway station is now accessible by escalators.
Whilst the target of many architectural critics, the building is notable for its massive glass roof, which makes it the largest glass-covered enclosed area in Europe. Not only does this substantially reduce heating and lighting loads - the mall area is lit entirely by natural daylight in summer, whilst the solar heat generated by the roof means that mechanical heating is only required for a week on average per year - it also earned the building its affectionate nickname The Glasgow Greenhouse. The roof's steel framework was fabricated by the shipbuilders Scott Lithgow.
The glass roofed element surrounds a seven storey car park, and when originally opened, an ice rink. This was closed in 1999 when a refurbishment programme (initiated to compete with the newer Buchanan Galleries), saw it being replaced by more shops and an enlarged restaurant area.

More London is 13 acres (53,000 m2) in size and has planning consent for 3,000,000 square feet (280,000 m2) of mixed use space, of which up to two million square feet will be offices, accommodating up to 20,000 people. The buildings were designed by Foster and Partners architects. The buildings are known as 1 & 6 More London Place, and 2, 3, 4 and 7 More London Riverside. The public area, which includes The Scoop, a fountain and planting areas, was designed by Townshend Landscape Architects.
There are frequently outdoor exhibitions and cultural events in More London. For most of 2005 there was a popular open-air exhibition of large environmental photographs called Earth from the Air.
In 2007, the development was shortlisted for the Carbuncle Cup architecture prize, an annual competition by Building Design for the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months.
The ten-storey '7 More London' office building in the new London project 'More London' next to Tower Bridge has achieved the internationally renowned Breeam 'Outstanding' rating for particularly sustainable technical building design.
The use of renewable energies and the energetically optimised glass facade keep carbon dioxide emissions low. The glass coating reduces office temperatures in summer

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6150341559 - 'Canary Wharf is a major business district located in London, United Kingdom.
Follow me on Twitter twitter.com/HotpixUK
London has two main financial centres, alongside the traditional City of London, and contains many of the UK's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest (and tallest completed), One Canada Square. Canary Wharf contains around 14,000,000 square feet (1,300,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (734,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group.
Around 90,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, HSBC, KPMG, MetLife, and Thomson Reuters.
Canary Wharf was built on the site of the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. By the 1950s, the port industry began to decline, leading to the docks closing by 1980.
Canary Wharf itself takes its name from No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. This was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Fred Olsen Lines for the Mediterranean and Canary Island (Insula Canaria (from canis) 'Island of Dogs') fruit trade. At their request, the quay and warehouse were given the name Canary Wharf.
The Canary Wharf of today began when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), came up with the idea to convert Canary Wharf into back office accomodation. A new business district was planned, construction started in 1988.
A bust and a boom in property prices then occurred. At the peak of property prices in 2007, the HSBC building sold for a record \u00a31.1 billion.
This dusk shot was taken at the evening rush hour and many offices are still filled with staff. Heron Quays DLR station is over to the far left and the Jubilee line underground tube station right of centre. The image is a panaorama stitch of siz seperate HDR images.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF2205 - A trolley of birthday cakes in a UK Tesco store.
A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearbyeven transnationallythus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1CC - The Jodrell Bank Observatory (originally the Jodrell Bank Experimental Station, then the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories from 1966 to 1999
/ˈdʒɒdrəl/) is a British observatory that hosts a number of radio telescopes, and is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes located at the observatory
the Mark II, as well as 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is also the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The site of the observatory, which includes the Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, is located in the civil parish of Lower Withington (the rest being in Goostrey civil parish), near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. It is reached from the A535. An excellent view of the telescope can be seen by travelling by train, as the main line between Manchester and Crewe passes right by the site, with Goostrey station being only a short distance away.
