Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHC8 - A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area in the United Kingdom where targeted action is taken to improve air quality. A CAZ can be non-charging or charging.
Whether a vehicle is charged when entering or moving through a CAZ depends on the type of vehicle and the Euro standard of the vehicle. The amount charged is up to the local authority responsible for the CAZ. Ultra-low-emission vehicles are not charged when entering or moving through a Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C5R3AA - Bawming the Thorn' in Appleton Thorn Village
Appleton Thorn village is the only village in England where the 'Bawming the Thorn' ceremony takes place. This ceremony take place on the 3rd Saturday of June every year. The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot of the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Adam de Dutton, a knight of the Crusades and local landowner, brought it to Appleton. Bawming, which means, decorating the the tree with flowers and ribbons, takes place whilst local children (our 6 class) dance and sing the Bawming song.
The Bawming Committee are always looking for new members to get involved to help maintain this unique celebration. If you would like to help in any way, please contact the Committee at: bawming@appletonthorn.org.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4160 - Reliant Motor Company was a British car manufacturer based in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. It was founded in 1935 and ended car production in 2002, the company had been known as Reliant Motor Company (or RMC for short) until the 1990s when it became Reliant Motors and then finally became Reliant cars LTD after production had ended of the Robin as the company was restructured to be a car import business. It is now a dormant company and the only entity left is a separate parts company created called Reliant Partsworld which produces parts for Reliant vehicles.
Reliant was a large manufacturing company that mainly produced vehicles for niche markets, such as small three-wheeled vehicles and sports cars. It was best known for the three-wheeled Reliant Robin, but produced a variety of vehicles over 60 years, including sports cars, convertibles and commercial vehicles. Approximately half a million Reliant vehicles were produced and sold in at least nine countries. For a period from the 1970s until the 1990s, Reliant was the UK's second biggest British-owned car manufacturer behind British Leyland.
To make their vehicles light, the company decided to produce car bodies from fibreglass in the mid-1950s. From this, Reliant became a pioneer in fibreglass design, techniques, and developments. Reliant also produced kitchen worktops, train bodies, and personal watercraft shells from fibreglass. In the 1970s, Reliant was the largest producer of fibreglass in Europe

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A0TWP7 - Taunton Deane was a local government district with borough status in Somerset, England. Its council was based in Taunton.
The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of the Municipal Borough of Taunton, Wellington Urban District, Taunton Rural District, and Wellington Rural District.
Taunton Deane was granted borough status in 1975, perpetuating the mayoralty of Taunton.
The district was given the name of an alternative form of the Taunton Deane Hundred.
In September 2016, West Somerset and Taunton Deane councils agreed in principle to merge the districts into one (with one council) subject to consultation. The new district would not be a unitary authority, with Somerset County Council still performing its functions. In March 2018 both councils voted in favour of the merger and it came into effect on 1 April 2019, with the first elections to the new council in May 2019. The new authority will be known as Somerset West and Taunton

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A0TWP6 - Penalty notices for parking and motoring offences
Fixed penalty notices were originally introduced for parking and motoring offences, currently continuing in Great Britain under powers provided by the Road Traffic Act 1991 as well as in Northern Ireland
in many areas this style of enforcement has been taken over from police by local authorities. Some other motoring offences (other than parking) can also be dealt with by the issue of FPNs by police, officers of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency or local authority personnel. A fixed penalty notice issued by local authority parking attendants is backed with powers to obtain payment by civil action and is defined as a penalty charge notice (PCN), distinguishing it from other FPNs which are often backed with a power of criminal prosecution if the penalty is not paid
in the latter case the fixed penalty is sometimes designated as a mitigated penalty to indicate the avoidance of being prosecuted which it provides.
If a charge is paid within 14 days of the 28-day period, the charge is decreased by 50%. Appealing against or contesting this notice, requires going through courts and hearings: if lost, the 50% period pay could be extended.
Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) should not be confused with 'Parking Charge Notices, the latter, being issued by private landowners seeking to impose a charge for parking on private land.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFMK11 - Bridgwater War Memorial is a Grade II* listed war memorial located on King Square in Bridgwater, Somerset, England, on the site previously occupied by Bridgwater Castle. It was designed by John Angel in the mid-1920s. The green figure of the memorial is allegorical, representing Civilization as a seated female, holding a globe in one hand and with the book of knowledge on her lap.
John Angel sculpted the Angel of Bridgwater. Mounted on a plinth, a female figure of 'Civilisation' lofts the world, which is encircled by emblems of commerce and peace. Under her foot are the demons of war. The throne and figure are backed by relief depictions of Labour, Home, Life and Education. On her lap is a book of laws, and she is surrounded by children. Indeed, given its monumental breadth, the many details in the design, and its metaphorical and iconic form, the sculpture is subject to colorful and variant interpretations and description. The bronze was cast by W Morris Art Bronze Foundry
At the time, Angel was working four years as assistant to Sir George Frampton,[2] and Frampton's influence is apparent. Figures from the roughly contemporaneous Exeter War Memorial, specifically Peace (also known as Victory) were exhibited by Angel at The Royal Academy in 1922, being exhibited in the courtyard of Burlington House,[8] as were other studies of the Bridgwater War Memorial on several occasions.
On the third step these words are inscribed: IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BRIDGWATER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918
The memorial was unveiled by General the Earl of Cavan then Chief of the Imperial General Staff on 25 September 1924, to commemorate the fallen of World War I. Further names have been added following World War II, the Korean War. Falklands Conflict and the Afghan conflict. It has been characterised as, An exceptionally fine and moving memorial, which forms an important focal point to this fine late Georgian square.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFMKCG - The Blake Statue in Bridgwater, Somerset, England was unveiled in 1900 to commemorate naval commander Robert Blake. The hollow bronze life size sculpture was crafted by F. W. Pomeroy. It is a Grade II* listed building
The hollow Bronze, statue was made by F. W. Pomeroy at a cost of ?1,200. It was unveiled in 1900 by Lord Brassey. Pomeroy was a prolific British sculptor of architectural and monumental works. He was one of the so-called New Sculptors identified by Edmund Gosse in 1894 ? a group distinguished by a stylistic turn towards naturalism and their work in architectural sculpture.
It was erected to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Robert Blake. ?1,200 had been raised from public donation to fund the statue. Blake was one of the most important military commanders of the Commonwealth of England and one of the most famous English admirals of the 17th century. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bridgwater in the Short Parliament. When the English Civil War broke out during the period of the Long Parliament, and having failed to be re-elected, Blake began his military career on the side of the parliamentarians despite having no substantial experience of military or naval matters. Blake was appointed general at sea in 1649, serving in the First Anglo-Dutch War and Anglo-Spanish War. Later he was made Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
The statue was moved to its current site in 1986 having previously stood in front of the Corn Exchange

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRAF - Watchet railway station is a station on the West Somerset Railway, a heritage railway in Somerset, England. It is situated in the small harbour town of Watchet.
History
Terminus: 1862?1873
The station opened on 31 March 1862 when the West Somerset Railway (WSR) opened from Norton Junction (later Norton Fitzwarren), serving as the WSR's original line terminus. Watchet was chosen as the WSR line's terminus, as it had been since the Middle Ages an important regional port on the Bristol Channel. Local iron ore, timber and paper products were exported, whilst from the same time, it had become an important national port for the import of French wine and salt. The commercial aim of the WSR in choosing Watchet as its terminus was hence to provide a wider and cheaper distribution route for goods from the port.
The GWR increased the capacity of the line in the 1930s. Because of the position of the goods shed opposite the platform, it was not possible to add a second track and platform, and a passing loop was constructed at Kentford just 0.75 miles (1.21 km) west of the station. It opened on 10 July 1933 but the signal box was only used during the daytime each summer.
Nationalisation in 1948 saw the GWR become the Western Region of British Railways. On 24 August 1952, the signal box at Washford closed, and the one at Kentford remained open until 7 May 1964 when it also closed. Freight traffic was withdrawn on 6 July 1964 and passenger trains on 4 January 1971.
Preservation
The station was reopened by the new West Somerset Railway on 28 August 1976

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRAK - Watchet railway station is a station on the West Somerset Railway, a heritage railway in Somerset, England.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C9E2T7 - The Museum of Somerset is located in the 12th-century great hall of Taunton Castle, in Taunton in the county of Somerset, England. The museum is run by South West Heritage Trust, an independent charity and includes objects initially collected by the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society who own the castle.
Until 2008 the museum was known as the Somerset County Museum. Heritage Lottery Fund support was obtained to improve the museum, and the new museum reopened at the end of September 2011.
Exhibits include the Frome Hoard, the Low Ham Roman Mosaic, the bronze-age South Cadbury shield and a range of other objects relating to the history of the county.
In 1874 the castle was bought by the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society and between 1899 and 1900 the Great Hall was repaired and refitted as their chief museum space. In 1908-9 the Adam Library was created to house the society's growing collection of books. The society now leases it to Somerset County Council to house the Museum of Somerset. A substantial proportion of the items held by the Museum were originally collected by the Society.
In October 2007, plans for a ?6.5 million improvement to the museum and the castle were submitted by Somerset County Council to the Heritage Lottery Fund. It closed to the public on 18 April 2008 for a two-year refit, and reopened as the Museum of Somerset on 29 September 2011. Central to the new museum is the Tree of Somerset, a sculpture carved from oak from the Quantock Hills, which depicts events from Somerset's history

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C9E2T4 - The Mary Stanley Training Home was founded in 1921 as the headquarters of the Bridgwater District Nursing Association and as a training centre for midwives. After 1948 the work of the Nursing Association and the Home were divided, the Home becoming part of the Bridgwater, Minehead and Butleigh Hospital Committee. Nursing care was provided to the poor in their own homes, continuing the work of the Queen Victoria Nursing Institute, which was created in 1902. Hospital care for pregnant women was provided by the maternity and midwifery wards at the hospital. There was also a small ward for premature babies. The Home was funded by voluntary donations and fund raising until the National Health Act of 1948. The records also include the patient registers of the Queen Victoria Nursing Institute (see above) for the years, 1893-1921,1924-1928 and 1938-1942, and the case notes of Bridgwater Infirmary, 1913-1942. The latter include patient record cards for Army and RAF personnel and Italian prisoners of war.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C9E2PW - Despite its name, Bath Brick was a Bridgwater product. Anywhere the British army went, the Bath Brick went likewise. It started in 1820 when it was discovered that using silt from the river bank, bricks could be made which when scraped would produce a gritty substance suitable for scouring metal. It was a predecessor to Vim and Ajax. The river carries a heavy burden of silt. This is deposited on each tide as a layer of slimy yellow matter. Within a mile of either side of the town bridge, the particle size of the grit, and the algae content, is perfect for making the Bath Bricks. Square pens were constructed on the river bank to trap the silt. After two or three months, this would be ?harvested', ground by a horse-driven mechanism and shaped into bricks for kiln-firing.
The bricks, some two or three inches across, were patented in 1827 by John Browne and became a world-wide commodity. They were given the name of Bath Brick since the colour after firing closely resembled that of Bath stone. At its peak, 24,000,000 bricks per year were being produced by ten different Bridgwater companies, especially during First World War when they were part of the soldier's standard kit issue. By the start of First World War l, they had been replaced by those tall cans of kitchen scourers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNA1 - The Thatchers company was founded by William Thatcher in 1904. His son Stanley Thatcher, born in 1910, began selling draught cider to pubs in Somerset and the company's presence in the area grew. The company is still family owned and employs around 200 people. In 1992 Martin took over from his father, John Thatcher, as managing director.
It has 500 acres of its own orchard, as well as using apples from other growers in the area. Alongside its bush orchards, Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style. Trained on wires, this enables easier harvesting and also helps to ensure the fruit has the optimum combination of sunlight and rain. It has also led to the development of a new bespoke harvester. At the height of season, Thatchers can press 500 tonnes of apples per day. Thatchers also maintains an exhibition orchard in which over 458 different varieties of apple tree are grown. Many of the traditional ciders produced at Myrtle Farm are matured in 100-year-old oak vats, which gives the cider a distinctive taste.
In addition to its cider production, Myrtle Farm is the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants, dealing with 90 per cent of the UK's total crop, which it processes on behalf of Ribena.
Thatchers Cider is available in many sports clubs and events across the South West. They are involved with teams including Winscombe R.F.C., Bath Rugby, Somerset County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle F.C, Exeter City and Torquay United.
Thatchers are also involved in many local events and festivals including: Glastonbury Festival, Royal Bath and West Show, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and Cambridge Folk Festival.
Thatcher's lost their ongoing cider sponsorship of the Glastonbury festival in 2019 to Mallets cider

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3153739395 - 'Bridgwater is a large historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England. Its population currently stands at around 35,886 as of 2011. Bridgwater is at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in level and well-wooded country. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett, and has been a major in-land port and trading centre since the industrial revolution. Most of its industrial bases still stand today. Its larger neighbour Taunton, is linked to Bridgwater via a canal, the M5 motorway and the GWR railway line.
Historically, the town had a politically radical tendency. The Battle of Sedgemoor, where the Monmouth Rebellion was finally crushed in 1685, was fought nearby. Notable buildings include the Church of St Mary and the house in Blake Street, largely restored, which was the birthplace of Admiral Blake in 1598, and is now the Blake Museum. The town has an arts centre and plays host to the annual Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.
The Corn Exchange and market house in Bridgwater, Somerset, England was built in 1834 by John Bowen and extended in 1875, by Charles Knowles. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.
The original market hall, which dates from 1791, is fronted by a circular portico with a domed roof with Tuscan pillars.[2] The distinctive portico was added after the north and south sides of the corn market were demolished for road widening in 1825.
It was originally surrounded by railings to separate the livestock from the food produce. The railings were removed in 1895.
In front of the building is a statue of Robert Blake who was born in the town. The statue was made in 1898 by F. W. Pomeroy and has since been repositioned to face down Cornhill

Bridgwater War Memorial is a Grade II* listed war memorial located on King Square in Bridgwater, Somerset, England, on the site previously occupied by Bridgwater Castle. It was designed by John Angel in the mid-1920s. The green figure of the memorial is allegorical, representing 'Civilization as a seated female, holding a globe in one hand and with the book of knowledge on her lap.
John Angel sculpted the Angel of Bridgwater. Mounted on a plinth, a female figure of 'Civilisation' lofts the world, which is encircled by emblems of commerce and peace. Under her foot are the 'demons of war.' The throne and figure are backed by 'relief depictions of Labour, Home, Life and Education.' On her lap is a book of laws, and she is surrounded by children. Indeed, given its monumental breadth, the many details in the design, and its metaphorical and iconic form, the sculpture is subject to colorful and variant interpretations and description. The bronze was cast by W Morris Art Bronze Foundry.
At the time, Angel was working four years as assistant to Sir George Frampton, and Frampton's influence is apparent. Figures from the roughly contemporaneous Exeter War Memorial, specifically 'Peace' (also known as Victory) were exhibited by Angel at The Royal Academy in 1922, being exhibited in the courtyard of Burlington House, as were other studies of the Bridgwater War Memorial on several occasions.
On the third step these words are inscribed: 'IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BRIDGWATER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'
The memorial was unveiled by General the Earl of Cavan then Chief of the Imperial General Staff on 25 September 1924, to commemorate the fallen of World War I. Further names have been added following World War II, the Korean War. Falklands Conflict and the Afghan conflict. It has been characterised as, 'An exceptionally fine and moving memorial, which forms an important focal point to this fine late Georgian square.'
In 2009 the memorial benefited from a small stipend from War Memorials Trust, which was used to replace bronze plaques and add a new one. The new plaques are said to be a precise match in form and typeface for those that were replaced.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTE8 - Fire Safety Review Gives Westfield House the ?All Clear'
Westfield House towering above Bridgwater's West Street since 1965
Sedgemoor District Council's Corporate Scrutiny committee, under the chairmanship of Westover Councillor Brian Smedley, has reviewed the Council's response to the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in its own hi-rise properties and has concluded that all necessary steps have been taken to re-assure tenants and where there was cause for concern measures are being introduced to improve the situation.
On 14 June at about 1am, a fire started on the 4th floor of the Grenfell Tower block in London housing some 600 people. Grenfell Tower had 24 floors with 6 flats per floor, an alarm system that worked and the Fire Brigade in immediate attendance ? yet at least 80 died ? most of them in 23 of the blocks 129 flats
Ward Councillor Brian Smedley immediately called for urgent review of safety measures
On the morning of 14th June, Scrutiny Chair Cllr Smedley visited Sedgemoor's (and Somerset's) only tower block, Westfield House and nearby lo-rise blocks around West Street. Hi Rise blocks are defined as ?anything above 18 metres'-usually 5 storeys or more. Noting resident's concerns he immediately wrote to Chief Executive Kerry Rickards and SDC Leader Duncan McGinty asking for a swift Council response to re-assure tenants and offered to hold a Scrutiny meeting at which residents and Homes in Sedgemoor officers could participate.
Cllr Smedley said The key question asked was ?How can a small kitchen fire in one flat lead to this catastrophe? How could it happen there and could it happen here?' Residents raised four areas of concern -The Stay Put Policy, the lack of a central sprinkler system, the lack of a central Fire Alarm and , crucially, the Cladding used which seemed to have contributed to the spread of the fire. We felt a Scrutiny Working Party should look at these issues first and present a full and open report to be put on the table for the public

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PG69H6 - Bridgwater is a large historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J4G - The River Parrett flows through the counties of Dorset and Somerset in South West England, from its source in the Thorney Mills springs in the hills around Chedington in Dorset. Flowing northwest through Somerset and the Somerset Levels to its mouth at Burnham-on-Sea, into the Bridgwater Bay nature reserve on the Bristol Channel, the Parrett and its tributaries drain an area of 660 square miles (1,700 km2) ? about 50 per cent of Somerset's land area, with a population of 300,000.
The Parrett's main tributaries include the Rivers Tone, Isle, and Yeo, and the River Cary via the King's Sedgemoor Drain. The 37-mile (60 km) long river is tidal for 19 miles (31 km) up to Oath. The fall of the river between Langport and Bridgwater is only 1 foot per mile (0.2 m/km), so it is prone to frequent flooding in winter and during high tides. Many approaches have been tried since at least the medieval period to reduce the incidence and effect of floods and to drain the surrounding fields.
In Anglo-Saxon times the river formed a boundary between Wessex and Dumnonia. It later served the Port of Bridgwater, and enabled cargoes to be transported inland. The arrival of the railways led to a decline in commercial shipping, and the only working docks are at Dunball. Man's influence on the river has left a legacy of bridges and industrial artefacts. The Parrett along with its connected waterways and network of drains supports an ecosystem that includes several rare species of flora and fauna. The River Parrett Trail has been established along the banks of the river.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWMD - The Vagabonds Carnival Club was founded in 1947 by Ken Parsons and Walt Creedy, and the club's first entry, The Miners, took first place at Bridgwater Carnival. Members originally met at Unity House (the local Labour Party headquarters) for a room rent of one shilling per night.
The following year, the club moved to The Railway Hotel, and the new home brought further success, after winning the carnival concerts with the stage show Gay Bachelors.
The Bristol and Exeter Pub (St John Street) became home to the club in 1951, before it moved to Ye Olde Oake (High Street) after club member, Ray Heal, took a tenancy with local brewers Starkey, Knight and Ford.
In 2001, the club were looking for a new site to build its entries after being forced to leave its cart building site at Huntworth after 17 years. After identifying a suitable new site at Dunwear, the club set about constructing a new shed. The cost of doing this, in terms of both time and money, proved a heavy burden, and for the first time in its history, the club was unable to enter a cart into Bridgwater Carnival in 2002. So in true carnival spirit, some members rode the procession route on the back of a lorry, with the remaining members walking behind.
The club is currently based at The Gallery, High Street, Bridgwater.
Whatever happens, The Vagabonds Carnival Club has already done enough to stamp its mark in the annals of carnival history and will, with luck, continue to do so for a long time to come.

the central entrance has a large rounded window and above that a short tower and cupola. The words PALACE THEATRE emblazon the front on either side of the central tower, above the first floor windows.
Beyond the entrance porch with two doors was a vestibule with central pay-box. The interior was said to be grandly decorated, and included reeded columns and a pair of angels which looked down from the proscenium. The balcony had 200 seats arranged in curved tiers and a refreshment lounge at rear (in addition to cafe below).
It was difficult to make the theatre pay, and it was sold to Shipman and King, who were in turn taken over by Gaumont-British. Revues and pantomimes continued until 1929, but films were gradually introduced for the main part. It was closed in 1938. It soon reopened after improvements to means of escape and during World War II it was very popular as a Barrack Theatre entertaining troops. Theatre use probably finished in the late 1940s.
It was refurbished and the proscenium altered in 1950 to accommodate wide screen films. Disused for several years, the original features from the 1950 refurbishment survived. In 1997 the building was refurbished and opened as a nightclub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWKX - ROBINSONS RELEASE NEW SEASONAL BEER ?FROM THE LIGHT SIDE': HOPPY WAN KENOBI
THIS IS THE BEER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
180 year old family-run-brewers, Robinsons, have unveiled a new seasonal beer designed to get drinkers to come out in force: Hoppy Wan Kenobi
a golden ale inspired by the world-famous movie: Star Wars.
Available for just two months throughout June and July, this noble brew is crisp, tart and packing a punch. The pump clip has been carefully designed to capture the legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, proudly presenting his iconic blue plasma blade lightsaber. ?Search your feelings' and you'll find the hop is strong with this one. Loaded with cascade and sovereign hops, and interlaced with light citrus aromas, this 4% ABV limited-edition golden ale is dangerously drinkable.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is part of Robinsons' series of seasonal movie-themed ales that have been specially brewed for 2018.
Gill Yates, Brands Manager for Robinsons Brewery, explains: For our latest seasonal beer, Hoppy Wan Kenobi, we decided to continue to play on our popular TV and film series theme, as from our customer's response we're aware of how well it works. In 2017, we sold 770,688 pints of our seasonal beers altogether. This was a great result and we're pleased to be able to provide drinkers with fun, relatable ales which look fantastic alongside our other beers on the bar. We hope that everybody gets a chance to taste this golden delight.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is available throughout June and July regionally via select Robinsons' pubs and free trade across the North West, Cumbria and North Wales, and nationally via listings with Heineken, Enterprise Inns Carlsberg, Punch, Admiral Taverns, Stonegate,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BT5 - Vivary Park is a public open space in Taunton, Somerset, England.
The Sherford Stream, a tributary of the River Tone, flows through the 7.5 hectares (19 acres) park, which is located near the centre of the town. It contains two main wide open spaces, as well as a war memorial dating from 1922, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, two children's playgrounds, a model railway track which was added in 1979, and an 18-hole, 4,620-yard (4,220 m), par-63 golf course. The park includes trees, rose beds and herbaceous borders, with around 56,000 spring and summer bedding plants being used each year. The rose garden includes the Royal National Rose Society Provincial Trial Ground.
The park is a garden of the European Garden Heritage Network.
The park stands on land that was formerly a medieval fish farm, or vivarium, for Taunton Priory and Taunton Castle. Although nothing remains above ground of these lakes, they are the origin of the name Vivary. Entries in pipe rolls of the 13th and 14th centuries show that bream, pike, and eels were supplied from the vivarium to the Castle and sometimes to the royal household. These sources identify two ponds, the magnum vivarium, or great pond, which probably occupied the low-lying area of the present-day golf-course, and the parvum vivarium or little pond, within what is now the park proper. When a trench for a new sewer was cut through the park and its golf course during the 1970s, archaeologists were able to identify the deposits of silt left behind by the medieval fish ponds.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H9PM20 - Bridgwater is a market town and civil parish in Somerset, England. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 35,886.
Bridgwater is at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in level and well-wooded country
to the north are the Mendips and to the west the Quantock hills. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett, 10 miles (16 km) from its mouth, has been a major port and trading centre and maintains a large industrial base. It is linked to Taunton by the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Bridgwater is between two junctions of the M5 motorway and Bridgwater railway station is on the main railway line between Bristol and Taunton.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYKN - The Church of St Mary in Bridgwater, Somerset, England was built in the 13th century, and has been designated as a Grade I listed building. It is dedicated to Saint Mary, the Virgin.
The building is on the site of an earlier church which was rebuilt by William Briwere in the early 13th century.
St Mary's church has a north porch and windows dating from the 14th century. During the 15th and 16th centuries chapels were added, modifying the nave and the chancel extended.
In July 1685, during the Monmouth Rebellion, the Duke of Monmouth watched from the tower as the forces of King James II assembled, at Westonzoyland, under the command of the Earl of Feversham prior to the Battle of Sedgemoor. The spire, which was built in 1367, is 114 feet 7.5 inches (34.938 m) high and sits on top of the 64 feet (20 m) tower. The spire was split by lightning in 1814 and repaired the following year. On the face of the tower is a clock installed in 1869 replacing earlier clocks which had been on the tower since 1393. Within the tower are eight bells. The oldest bell dates from 1617 with further bells being added through the 17th and 18th centuries. The most recent bell is the Tenor which dates from 1868 and was cast by John Taylor & Co.
Between 1849 and 1851 major renovation work, by Dickson and Brakspear of Manchester, included the removal of the galleries and box pews
they were replaced by regular pews. Between 1877 and 1878 further alterations were made, and in 1888 the walled up arch between the nave and the tower was opened. In 1902 a vestry was added. In 1937 more alterations were made and the decoration of the Sanctuary simplified

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNRF - This night-time photograph shows a large tethered advertising balloon illuminated from within and displayed in Yeovil, Somerset, creating a striking focal point against the dark sky. The balloon prominently features the branding health-on-line along with the slogan Surprisingly Affordable Health Insurance, clearly readable on the envelope.
The balloon is secured by multiple guy ropes and positioned within a fenced grassed area, suggesting a temporary promotional or public event installation rather than a free-flying aircraft. Ground-based floodlights enhance the visual impact, while nearby buildings and street lighting place the scene firmly within an urban town-centre environment.
Such tethered balloons are commonly used for marketing, promotional campaigns, and public engagement events, particularly in high-visibility civic spaces. The image documents contemporary outdoor advertising practices, night-time town-centre activity, and branded visual spectacle in a South West England setting, making it suitable for editorial use relating to marketing, insurance, public events, urban life, and UK regional towns

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNMD - This image shows a historic painted wall sign advertising Burfields and The Martock Glove Company, located on Manor Road in Martock, Somerset (TA12 6JH). The weathered blue sign reads: This is where gloves of quality and superlative design are manufactured by Burfields and The Martock Glove Co, reflecting the pride once taken in local glove production.
Martock has a long-established association with glove making, with the industry forming a significant part of the village's economy from the 18th century onwards. Somerset, and Martock in particular, became known for high-quality leather gloves supplied across Britain and overseas, supported by skilled local labour and small-scale manufacturing workshops rather than large industrial mills.
The sign is mounted on a brick building beside a traditional sash-style window, reinforcing the modest, workshop-based nature of glove production in rural Somerset. The faded paint, uneven lettering, and patina of age add strong visual evidence of mid-20th-century industrial advertising practices, when painted signs served as both branding and local wayfinding.
Today, surviving signs such as this are valued as tangible reminders of Britain's manufacturing heritage and regional craft industries. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to industrial history, British textiles, traditional craftsmanship, rural manufacturing, historic signage, and Somerset local history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNMH - This image shows a memorial plaque mounted on a historic water trough in Martock, Somerset (TA12 6JL). The inscription reads: Water trough given in memory of the 450,000 horses killed in the South African War 1899?1902, commemorating the enormous loss of animal life during the conflict more commonly known as the Boer War.
During the South African War, horses were essential to the British Army for cavalry, artillery hauling, and transport across difficult terrain. Poor conditions, disease, exhaustion, and limited veterinary care led to exceptionally high mortality rates. Memorials such as this water trough were erected across Britain in the early 20th century as practical yet symbolic tributes, combining public utility with remembrance.
The trough reflects a wider tradition of functional war memorials, often placed in village centres to serve both people and working animals at a time when horses remained vital to everyday life. The engraved metal plaque set into stone conveys solemn remembrance while highlighting a lesser-acknowledged aspect of military history: the role and sacrifice of animals in warfare.
Today, the Martock water trough stands as an important piece of local heritage, linking the village to imperial history, early 20th-century memorial culture, and changing attitudes towards animal welfare. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to war memorials, British military history, the Boer War, animal history, remembrance culture, and Somerset local history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNPM - This image shows a blue heritage plaque mounted on the Market House in Martock, Somerset (TA12 6JL). The plaque, headed Historic Martock ? Market House, records the long civic history of the building, which served as the village market place, meeting house, and town hall. It also notes its later role housing a horse-drawn fire engine, reflecting the multifunctional nature of village buildings in earlier centuries.
According to the inscription, the upper floor was used for parochial meetings and dispensing charity bread, and it continues to serve as a meeting place for the Parish Council. The plaque also references the village stocks, which were formerly located nearby next to the Pinnacle, illustrating historic systems of local justice and governance.
The plaque is part of Martock's local heritage marking scheme and highlights the continuity of civic life in the village from the early modern period through to the present day. The blue enamelled sign, fixed to stonework, is typical of locally commissioned heritage plaques rather than national English Heritage markers.
The image is suitable for editorial use relating to Somerset local history, English market towns, heritage interpretation, parish governance, and historic civic buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNR2 - This image shows a printed notice displayed on the door of a charity shop in the village of Martock, Somerset, clearly stating We do not accept any electrical items. The sign is mounted behind glass within a green-painted wooden door, with the heading Martock Charity Shop visible at the top of the notice.
Such signage reflects common safety and compliance requirements faced by UK charity shops, particularly around the acceptance of second-hand electrical goods, which can pose risks related to fire safety, product liability, and PAT testing regulations. Many small, volunteer-run charity shops choose not to accept electrical donations due to the cost and responsibility of testing and certification.
Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes including charity retail, donation restrictions, health and safety, voluntary sector operations, and the realities of running community-based shops in rural English villages. The straightforward, utilitarian design of the notice emphasises clarity and compliance over branding, a typical feature of small local charities.
The photograph is suitable for editorial use in contexts relating to UK charity shops, high street change, community volunteering, retail regulation, and consumer safety awareness.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPAR - This image shows the village of Martock in Somerset at dusk, as daylight fades and evening light softens the surrounding buildings and landscape. The transition from day to night creates a subdued, tranquil mood typical of rural English villages at the end of the day.
Martock is a historic Somerset village with origins dating back to the Saxon period, surrounded by agricultural land and characterised by traditional stone buildings, narrow streets, and a strong sense of local community. Scenes such as this reflect the slower pace of life often associated with villages in the South West of England.
Dusk photography emphasises atmosphere rather than activity, capturing subtle colour changes in the sky and gentle contrasts between natural and built environments. Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes of rural living, community, heritage, and the quiet rhythms of countryside life.
Photographed in natural light, the image is well suited for editorial use covering English village life, Somerset landscapes, rural identity, and the visual character of the UK countryside during the evening hours.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJMNE - Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular 17th-century stable court (1675), situated in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England.
The house was owned by several families by 1745 after which it fell into disrepair and was used as a tenant farm. After repair by Alfred Hoare Powell, it was the first house acquired by the National Trust, in 1907, on the recommendation of the antiquarian Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley. In the 1920s the house was renovated, the stable block turned into a residence and several outbuildings, gardens and gateways constructed.
The house was originally surrounded by a medieval deer park and in the 17th century a formal garden was constructed. This had largely disappeared until a new garden was laid out by Gertrude Jekyll in an Arts and Crafts-style in the first half of the 20th century. It now contains walled kitchen gardens, fruit orchards and ornamental gardens.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE54XK - The Working Men's Club and Institute Union (CIU or C&IU) is a voluntary association of private members' clubs in Great Britain & Northern Ireland, with about 1,800 associate clubs. One club in the Republic of Ireland, the City of Dublin Working Men's Club is also affiliated. Most social clubs are affiliated to the CIU.
They do not have to be working men's clubs, although most are. There are many village clubs, Royal British Legions, Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, and various other clubs involved. A member of one CIU-affiliated club is entitled to use the facilities of all other CIU clubs, although they will only be entitled to vote in committee elections in clubs where they are full members.
The CIU has two main purposes: to provide a voice at national level for working men's clubs and social clubs, and to provide discounted products and services for its members.
Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation brewery in Dunston, Tyne and Wear. Although CIU-affiliated clubs do still receive discounted beer, these discounts are largely passed on to the members, and Federation beer will generally be cheaper than beer available in local pubs. The brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle in 2004 and now brews Newcastle Brown Ale.
Together with other club organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Association of Conservative Clubs, the National Union of Liberal Clubs and the National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs, the CIU is part of CORCA (Confederation of Registered Club Associations) which lobbies Parliament on behalf of clubs. This group was active in the debate about smoking: as most clubs are known for working men who like to drink and smoke (in many cases without any women in the bar), there is some concern about the future prospects of clubs.
The CIU holds a national congress every year and as part of its activities runs convalescent homes. In many ways, it could be said to be the oldest surviving friendly society

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF133E - The Grand Pier is a pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles (29 km) south west of Bristol. Here shown are three Sisk construction workers, that have worked on the pier.
Following a fire, which completely destroyed the pavilion, the pier was rebuilt at a cost of ?39 million and reopened on 23 October 2010.
at 01:35 BST on 28 July 2008, a fire at the foot of the north tower on the shoreward (eastern) end of the pavilion triggered the privately monitored fire alarm,[10] but the Essex-based alarm monitoring company were unable to contact the key-holder by mobile phone and no further action was taken.[11] It was not until 06:46 BST that the Avon Fire and Rescue Service was notified. It deployed 13 fire engines, special appliances, and more than 85 firefighters to tackle the blaze,[10] but the building was soon destroyed.
The pier on fire, 28 July 2008.
Robert Tinker, a Grand Pier employee, was later praised by the fire service as he braved the extreme intensity of the heat from the flames to rush around the side of the building to remove several gas canisters which had been stored within the premises, had these not been removed the fire service claimed that the fire could have been much worse, with the possibility of local residents and traders needing to be evacuated. Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire started due to a number of deep fat fryers which had been located within the area pavilion, however after further investigation this was later ruled out, as was arson. On 22 October 2008 at a news conference held by the fire service, it was announced that the cause of the fire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9X4GW - Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, commonly known as Bath Abbey, is a parish church of the Church of England and former Benedictine monastery in Bath, Somerset, England. Founded in the 7th century, it was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries
major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country. The medieval abbey church served as a sometime cathedral of a bishop. After long contention between churchmen in Bath and Wells the seat of the Diocese of Bath and Wells was later consolidated at Wells Cathedral. The Benedictine community was dissolved in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The church architecture is cruciform in plan and can seat up to 1,200 patrons. An active place of worship, it also hosts civic ceremonies, concerts and lectures. There is a heritage museum in the cellars.
The abbey is a Grade I listed building, particularly noted for its fan vaulting. It contains war memorials for the local population and monuments to several notable people, in the form of wall and floor plaques and commemorative stained glass. The church has two organs and a peal of ten bells. The west front includes sculptures of angels climbing to heaven on two stone ladders, representing Jacob's Ladder.
During the 1820s and 1830s buildings, including houses, shops and taverns which were very close to or actually touching the walls of the abbey were demolished and the interior remodelled by George Phillips Manners who was the Bath City Architect. Manners erected flying buttresses to the exterior of the nave and added pinnacles to the turrets.
Major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s, funded by the rector, Charles Kemble. The work included the installation of fan vaulting in the nave, which was not merely a fanciful aesthetic addition but a completion of the original

Debenhams is preparing to call in administrators after the struggling department store was forced to close all its outlets under the coronavirus lockdown.
The company, which has 22,000 staff and was rescued by its lenders after collapsing into administration only a year ago, is understood to be considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators next week. The legal process provides protection from creditors for 10 working days while a company tries to secure a rescue deal.
Potential administrators lined up this time include KPMG, which handled the Debenhams restructure last May.
A Debenhams spokesman said: Like all retailers, we are making contingency plans reflecting the extraordinary current circumstances. Our owners and lenders remain highly supportive and whatever actions we may take will be with a view to protecting the business during the current situation.
They added: While our stores remain closed in line with government guidance, and the majority of our store-facing colleagues have been furloughed, our website continues to trade and we are accepting customer orders, gift cards and returns.
It is understood that the potential insolvency measure would be intended to protect the business so it could continue to trade.
Debenhams was taken over last year by a group of its financial backers, including the US hedge funds Silver Point and GoldenTree, after falling into administration. It then used an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to cull unprofitable sites and cut rents.
The group has closed 22 stores, 19 of which shut in January, resulting in more than 700 job losses. A further 28 of its remaining 141 stores had been lined up for permanent closure next year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H9PM1Y - Bridgwater is a market town and civil parish in Somerset, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJMYX - Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular 17th-century stable court (1675), situated in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England.
