It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge. Following the re-routing of roads to the Silver Jubilee Bridge, the Runcorn Locks Restoration Society campaigns to reinstate the flight of locks.[1]
The Bridgewater canal is described as the first great achievement of the canal age, although the Sankey Canal opened earlier. Bridgewater captured the public imagination because of its engineering feats
it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, and a tunnel at Worsley. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

The Fortune's family has been making and supplying quality kippers in Whitby at their smokehouse in Whitby since 1872. It is the 5th generation of the Fortune's family who are currently running the business and a 6th generation is lined up to follow in their ancestors' footsteps.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P04T - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

In 1901, the company merged with other companies to form The Imperial Tobacco Company to face competition from US manufacturers. The company also released several series of association football trading cards in the 1930s under the Player's brand.
Nowadays the brands Player and John Player Special are owned and commercialised by Imperial Brands.
History
In March 1820, William Wright set up a small tobacco factory in Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian. This business expanded and earned Wright a comfortable fortune. John Player bought the business in 1877. He had the Castle Tobacco Factories built in Radford, Nottingham, just west of the city centre. He had three large factory blocks built, but initially only one was used to process and pack tobacco. The other two blocks were loaned out to lace manufacturers until the business had expanded enough to use the additional space.
John Player died in December 1884 and for the next nine years, the business was run by a small group of family friends until W G and J D Player were ready to take over the firm in 1893. The business became a private limited company in 1895, with a share capital of ?200,000.
The business was run later by Player's sons John Dane Player and William Goodacre Player.
In 1901, in response to competitive threats from the US, Player's merged with the Imperial Tobacco Group. The largest constituent of Imperial Tobacco was W. D. & H. O. Wills and the new group was run from Wills' head office in Bristol. Player's retained its own identity with cigarette brands such as Navy Cut, No. 9, John Player Special, and Gold Leaf

This impressive mural of the mercurial frontman of The Fall was painted by graffiti artist Akse P19 as part of the Prestwich Art Festival in 2018.
The mural was painted 9 months after the underground rock icon died aged 60 after a battle with lung and kidney cancer, and features Smith smoking a cigarette in typically nonchalant fashion, alongside the quote ?Fear is something I try not to absorb', from an interview he gave to the Guardian newspaper in 2011.
Smith ? who was born in Broughton, Salford in 1957 ? founded The Fall were founded in Prestwich in 1976, and lived in the area for most of his life.
The Fall were one of the most prolific and acclaimed post-punk bands to emerge in the UK, and retained a large cult following right until Smith's death. This impressive mural of the mercurial frontman of The Fall was painted by graffiti artist Akse P19 as part of the Prestwich Art Festival in 2018.
The mural was painted 9 months after the underground rock icon died aged 60 after a battle with lung and kidney cancer, and features Smith smoking a cigarette in typically nonchalant fashion, alongside the quote ?Fear is something I try not to absorb', from an interview he gave to the Guardian newspaper in 2011.
Smith ? who was born in Broughton, Salford in 1957 ? founded The Fall were founded in Prestwich in 1976, and lived in the area for most of his life.
The Fall were one of the most prolific and acclaimed post-punk bands to emerge in the UK, and retained a large cult following right until Smith's death. He was the only constant member of the group that notoriously had a high turnover of members. Smith once wittily remarked if it's me and yer granny on bongos, it's the Fall.

Not surprising that we see a peak in suicides at this time of year. It does peak in January apparently in the UK, maybe because after Christmas, there is a massive anti-climax. We realise we are actually no closer to our family or friends, than our mantelpiece of Xmas cards suggest. Our promises to 'meet up soon' are just words. We may all die alone, friendless with no legacy.

Smoking generally has negative health effects, because smoke inhalation inherently poses challenges to various physiologic processes such as respiration. Diseases related to tobacco smoking have been shown to kill approximately half of long-term smokers when compared to average mortality rates faced by non-smokers. Smoking caused over five million deaths a year from 1990 to 2015.
Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use. Tobacco smoking is the most popular form, being practiced by over one billion people globally, of whom the majority are in the developing countries. Less common drugs for smoking include cannabis and opium. Some of the substances are classified as hard narcotics, like heroin, but the use of these is very limited as they are usually not commercially available.

Incised render front on rubble stone with stone plinth, stone slate roof with hip rising on left to meet rear cross range with concrete tile roof, stone end stack to right, and to rear end of cross range. Single front range and rear cross range, with additional C20 single-storey wing to rear not of special interest, 2 storeys. Three windows, 12-pane sashes all of different heights and unevenly spaced. Three similar sized below and recessed half-glazed door left of centre. Ground floor interior retains one chamfered beam.

I last saw Magazine at the Manchester Academy 1 on valentines day 2009, much to the consternation of 'er indoors. Since then they have recorded a new album on record label Wire Sound. 'No Thyself' is the first for three decades. Legendary bass player Barry Adamson left to concentrate on his film work and solo recordings. Jon 'Stan' White has taken over his bass.
The procedings started with some placards from Howard 'You Do The Meaning' (which is a track from the new album) and 'Fly Away To The World' after a Japanese kabuki intro. The old favourite 'Definitive Gaze' is first up. The sound mix seemed shaky at first, poor sound is said to have dogged a few opening gigs. Howards vocals seemed by the middle of definitive gaze.
Once introduced as Magazine version 6.0 service pack 1, they ploughed into 'Give Me Everything'. The excitement and the pogo-ing (yes, old men too..) started.

One of my favourite tracks, good to hear it today!
'Hash Pipe' is a song by US indie rock band Weezer. Released in 2001, it was the first single off the band's long-awaited third album, Weezer (The Green Album).
The song was aparently inspired by a male transvestite prostitute known for rambling to people in Santa Monica. Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson is featured on the cover of the song's CD single holding a pack of Natural American Spirit cigarettes that has been blurred out due to copyright issues.

The new white Samuel Beckett Bridge (Irish: Droichead Samuel Beckett) is a cable-stayed bridge in Dublin that joins Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the River Liffey to Guild Street and North Wall Quay in the Docklands area.
The architect is Santiago Calatrava, a designer of a number of innovative bridges and buildings. This is the second bridge in the area designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge, which is further upstream.
Constructed by a 'Graham Hollandia Joint Venture', the main span of the Samuel Beckett Bridge is supported by 31 cable stays from a doubly back-stayed single forward arc tubular tapered spar, with decking provided for four traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It is also capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through. This is achieved through a rotational mechanism housed in the base of the pylon.
The shape of the spar and its cables is said to evoke an image of a harp, a symbol of Ireland lying on its edge.

Most smokers are of course banished to the cold street, or outside of pubs these days in Britain. In fact the constituant countries of the UK almost shamefully fell over themselves to be the first to ban smokers in pubs and public places like theatres and bingo halls etc.
This has led to the sad decline and closure of well over one pub a week across the UK. I believe bad pubs should go to the wall much like bad plumbers. Although many good, well run and historically significant hostelries are unfortunately closing too. This worrying side effect has made the supermarkets richer. Even off-licence chains such as Threshers and Victoria Wine are unable to compete with cheap supermarket booze and that brought in by the van load from the continent.

Usually containing only strong tobacco, the traditional waterpipe has many names in the near east: Hukkah, shisha, nargeeleh, nargile, nargilen or argeelah.
The pipe appears to have originated in India. Initially in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar (around 1542 ). Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani came from Baghdad to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'.
This new pipe for smoking soon became a status symbol for the Indian aristocracy and gentry. These days the Hookah west of Cyprus and east of Thailand is ubiquitous.

This impressive mural of the mercurial frontman of The Fall was painted by graffiti artist Akse P19 as part of the Prestwich Art Festival in 2018.
The mural was painted 9 months after the underground rock icon died aged 60 after a battle with lung and kidney cancer, and features Smith smoking a cigarette in typically nonchalant fashion, alongside the quote ?Fear is something I try not to absorb', from an interview he gave to the Guardian newspaper in 2011.
Smith ? who was born in Broughton, Salford in 1957 ? founded The Fall were founded in Prestwich in 1976, and lived in the area for most of his life.
The Fall were one of the most prolific and acclaimed post-punk bands to emerge in the UK, and retained a large cult following right until Smith's death. He was the only constant member of the group that notoriously had a high turnover of members. Smith once wittily remarked if it's me and yer granny on bongos, it's the Fall.
The mural is on the side of the fish and chip shop Chips @ No.8 on Clifton Road.
