John Middleton (1578?1623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received ?20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Any offence that has a standard penalty charge, is not an offence that you can be prosecuted for. A penalty charge is not the same thing as an enforceable fine. That being said, you can't just ignore a PCN. You will need to either appeal against it or pay it.
Cardiff council issues Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) for a number of reasons. However, the most common reasons why you might either find one attached to your vehicle or be sent one by post, are for minor traffic rule infractions and parking offences.
If you are issued with a PCN, what do you need to do with it? Can you ignore it, or do you have to pay it? Or is there some way to make an appeal against the PCN?
You can't pay a penalty charge notice in instalments. There are three ways to pay a Cardiff council penalty charge notice. You can pay online, as long as you know the PCN number and have a credit or debit card. There is also a payment hotline that is open 7 days a week, around the clock. You can call 029 2044 5900 and give the PCN number, and then pay using a payment card. Lastly, you can make out a cheque or postal order to Cardiff Council, write the PCN number on the back, and then post it to the following address:

Aneurin Nye Bevan PC (15 November 1897 ? 6 July 1960) was a Welsh Labour Party politician, noted for tenure as Minister of Health in Clement Attlee's government in which he spearheaded the creation of the British National Health Service. He is also known for his wider contribution to the founding of the British welfare state.
Bevan is widely regarded as one of the most influential left-wing politicians in British history.
The statue was erected in 1987, designed by Robert Thomas.
Bevan became Labour MP for Ebbw Vale in 1929, subsequently an effective public speaker known for his left wing views and being temporarily expelled from the party on two occasions (one of them for his opposition to nuclear weapons). He was elected to the Labour's National Executive and became Minister for Health in the post-war Labour government, where he was behind the nationalisation of healthcare and founding of the NHS. As Minister for Housing he took steps to solve the post-war housing shortage. Bevan remained MP for Tredegar until his death in 1960.
The statue was commissioned by South Glamorgan County Council and designed by Welsh sculptor, Robert Thomas, who also created a number of other sculptures in Cardiff city centre. The statue was erected in 1987 at the far end of Queen Street. It is the only statue of Bevan (as of 2021) in the United Kingdom.
The figure of Bevan, wearing a suit and leaning forward in a typical pose, is cast in bronze and stands on top of a polished granite pedestal. The statue is 1.83 metres (6.0 ft) in height, while the pedestal is 2.14 metres (7.0 ft) high. In gold on the front of the pedestal are the words Founder of the National Health Service.

The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.

The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.

Ministers will make an announcement on a ban on onshore windfarms in the coming days, including potential tweaks to the levelling up bill, in the face of a growing rebellion by Conservative MPs.
The culture secretary, Michelle Donelan, gave the strongest hint yet that the government is preparing to lift the de facto onshore wind ban after the number of public rebels grew to 34 on Monday night.
The government all but confirmed on Monday that restrictions on onshore wind would be changed in the face of the revolt, led by the former levelling up secretary Simon Clarke and endorsed by Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, as well as the former chief whip Wendy Morton.
Donelan said changes were set to be announced by Michael Gove before the bill's return to parliament. The government is listening to colleagues around this amendment and I'm sure that there will be some announcements made by the levelling up secretary in the days to come, she told GB News.
Members from around the house put down amendments, including senior members of parliament, and then there are discussions between ministers and those members.

The alpaca (Lama pacos) is a species of South American camelid mammal. It is similar to, and often confused with, the llama. However, alpacas are often noticeably smaller than llamas. The two animals are closely related and can successfully crossbreed. Both species are believed to have been domesticated from their wild relatives, the vicu?a and guanaco. There are two breeds of alpaca: the Suri alpaca and the Huacaya alpaca.
Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Southern Peru, Western Bolivia, Ecuador, and Northern Chile at an altitude of 3,500 to 5,000 metres (11,000 to 16,000 feet) above sea level. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike llamas, they were not bred to be working animals, but were bred specifically for their fiber. Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted and woven items, similar to sheep's wool. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles, and ponchos, in South America, as well as sweaters, socks, coats, and bedding in other parts of the world. History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.
Advanced Passenger Train
APT No.370 003/006 at Crewe Heritage Centre
Built by British Rail (BR) the 1970s and 1980s, this Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (APT) is the only surviving APT set. Numbered 370 003/006, it is open at all times with an occasional cafe run from the original buffet car (selected days only). The APT-P museum can be found inside one of the carriages, with photographs on display from the APT project

The church was replaced in 1887 by a purpose-built theatre, which burnt down in 1910. The theatre was rebuilt the following year, and was refurbished in 1994. It continues in use as a theatre, as of 2022 it is managed by Trafalgar Theatres. The theatre is constructed in brick, and adjacent to it is a block containing the entrance and offices. Its interior contains decorated plasterwork.
History
The theatre stands on the site of a former Roman Catholic Church that had been built to serve Irish immigrants working on the local railway. In 1876 the congregation moved into a larger church in the town. The site was acquired by Thomas Cliffe, a local farmer, and he gave permission for Henry Taylor, a local printer, to convert the church into a theatre. Taylor wanted to have a proper theatre on the site and later built the New Lyceum Theatre, which opened on 21 November 1887. It cost ?5,000 (equivalent to ?590,000 in 2021) and seated 1,250 people. It was re-fitted in 1908 and changed its name to the Opera House. On 11 March 1910 the theatre was destroyed in a fire, and it was decided to rebuild it on the same site. The new theatre was designed by Albert Winstanley, it seated 850, and opened on 6 October 1911. In the early 1930s it was acquired by Terence Byron, who also owned theatres elsewhere in the country. It was bought in 1955 by Crewe Borough Council who formed a management trust in 1964. It operated, with a varying degree of success, as a repertory theatre. During this time actors and actresses who later achieved fame gained experience in the theatre
these included Glenda Jackson, Richard Beckinsale, Judy Loe, and Lynda Bellingham. In 1982 the management of the theatre moved back from the trust to the Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council. The council redecorated the theatre in 1992, and installed new seating

The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.

The statue of Robert Owen, which is located on the corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of a sculpture deigned by Gilbert Bayes
Robert Owen was a Welsh reformer who moved to Manchester as a teenager.
He became heavily involved in the cotton industry and, with the help of several Manchester businessmen, went on to buy a large textile factory near Glasgow.
Here he put into practice values of sound working conditions, introduced a minimum age and provided nurseries and schools.
He also opened stores where workers could buy good quality goods at little more than the wholesale cost.
These principles became the basis for the cooperative shops in Britain.
His statue, on corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of the one erected in Owen's birthplace of Newtown.
It was commissioned by the Co-operative Bank as part of the 150th anniversary of the modern co-operative movement and was unveiled in 1994.

So successful that Thomas' son, Edward was able to purchase Walton Estate in 1814. And by the 1830s, Edward had succeeded in building Walton Hall. However, it wasn't until 1910 and 1930 that Lord and Lady Daresbury opened the estate to the public. By that time Walton's spectacular gardens were the main attraction on open days.
Unfortunately, Edward didn't have long to enjoy the estate before his death in 1835. It was his son Gilbert who made Walton the Greenall family home and country estate. As well as controlling the family brewing business, Gilbert also held political and social aspirations. By the time of his retirement, Gilbert had served Warrington as Conservative Member of Parliament for over 30 years!
Such was his influence and standing in the local community that Gilbert was granted a peerage in 1927. ?Sir' Gilbert spent his life establishing Walton Estate, including the extension of the hall in the 1870s. It was during this renovation that the now-iconic clock tower was built.
However, it was Sir Gilbert's son (also Gilbert), who transformed the estate. More commonly known as Lord Daresbury, he made the estate into a model of agricultural excellence. Such was his success that the gardens would attract up to 45,000 people during open days and in particular for The Walton Show.
At the height of Lord Daresbury's wealth, he had bought up to 7,000 acres of land around Walton Hall, and financed local buildings such as St John the Evangelist Church in Walton Village

The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. History
A pub has existed on the site since 1849, originally named the Shields and Newcastle Tavern. It was renamed the Castle Inn in 1855 and assumed its present name in 1863. The Cardiff historian Brian Lee has said the Golden Cross developed a reputation as the smartest brothel in town in the 19th century. Around 1903/4 it was rebult in its current form for Brains Brewery.
The Golden Cross is alleged to be the site of a fight involving a young Rocky Marciano, who was stationed in Wales during his time in the United States Army during World War 2. Also during the war, the fascist leader Oswald Mosley attempted to hold a meeting at the pub but violent opposition forced him to return to London.
The pub was given listed status by Cadw in May 1975, but despite this it was threatened with demolition in 1979 as part of a road-widening scheme. However it was reprieved after a campaign led by the South Wales Echo. In 2010 it was listed by CAMRA as one of their 10 most unspoilt pubs by the CAMRA Pub Heritage Group and is listed on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The Golden Cross has become a popular gay friendly pub, with regular drag acts and entertainment. It was voted in 2004 as the best gay pub in the UK. The pub remains a tied house of the Brains Brewery.

The Beacon clock tower at Customhouse Quay in Greenock, designed by William Clark, marine artist. It has a weather vane, a fog bell, a fog light and clock. The lower section is interesting and contains an amazing amount of detail.
The drinking fountain has a beautiful lion's head and crest with the words God Speed - very apt considering many there would be going on a journey, as well as being part of Greenock's own motto. There was also a letter box.

The original building opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow's city centre, built by Margaret Maggie McIver (n??e Russell) (1879?1958), The Barras Queen. The Barras street market (more properly Glasgow Barrowland market), after which the area and the ballroom are named, continues until the present day. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958, leading to a complete rebuild. The rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above. The front of the building is decorated with an animated neon sign. The sign is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK, although this cannot be confirmed as the original order documents detailing the specifications of the sign have been lost.
In more recent years the ballroom has become a major concert venue with a capacity of around 2,100 people, known for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Simple Minds filmed the video for their 1983 hit single, Waterfront, at Barrowlands. Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, The Vatersay Boys, Skipinnish and Marillion have all played at the hall. Adjacent to the ballroom itself is the Barrowland Park, where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists who have played at the venue over the decades. Northern Ireland punk band Stiff Little Fingers have played to a sold-out crowd every St Patrick's day since 1992, and recorded their Best served Loud album there in 2016 to celebrate 25 years at Barrowland.
Between 1968 and 1969, three young women (Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald and Helen Puttock) were found brutally murdered after nights out at the Barrowland. All three murders were attributed to a man dubbed Bible John by police.

The surviving Grade I listed entrance building was designed by Philip Hardwick as the company's offices and boardroom. Built in 1838, it is among the world's oldest surviving pieces of monumental railway architecture. Costing ?28,000 to build, the architecture is Roman inspired, following Hardwick's trip to Italy in 1818?19. It has tall pillars running up the front of the building, made out of a series of huge blocks of stone. The design mirrored the Euston Arch at the London end of the L&BR.
The interior was modified in 1839 to accommodate an 'hotel' (the Victoria), although this was probably more in the nature of a refreshment room or public house, and later the booking hall, with a large iron balustraded stone staircase and offices. Rovers played four matches there when it was known as Ewood Bridge and was most likely little more than a field. Their first match was against Sheffield Wednesday on 9 April 1881.
Ewood Park was officially opened in April 1882 and during the 1880s staged football, athletics and some form of greyhound racing (not oval). Rovers moved back in in 1890, signing a ten-year lease at an initial annual rent of ?60. Their first match at the ground was against Accrington in September. Gogarty was born 17 August 1878 in Rutland Square, Dublin, the eldest child of Henry Gogarty, a well-to-do Dublin physician, and Margaret Gogarty (n??e Oliver), the daughter of a Galway mill owner. Three siblings (Henry, Mary, and Richard) were born later. Gogarty's father, himself the son of a medical doctor, had been educated at Trinity College and owned two fashionable homes in Dublin, which set the Gogartys apart from other Irish Catholic families at that time and allowed them access to the same social circles as the Protestant Ascendancy
As one of Dublin's medicos, Gogarty was known to be fond of public pranks and midnight carousing in the Kips, Dublin's red-light district. He had a talent for humorous and bawdy verse, which quickly made the rounds through the city, and sometimes composed mnemonic lyrics to aid his medical studies. He also enjoyed a highly successful cycling career before being banned from the tracks in 1901 for bad language, and between 1898 and 1901 he rescued at least four people from drowning. He became interested in Irish nationalism after meeting Arthur Griffith in 1899, and contributed propaganda pieces to The United Irishman over subsequent years
As a Sinn F??iner during the Irish War of Independence, Gogarty participated in a variety of anti-Black and Tan schemes, allowing his home to be used as a safe house and transporting disguised IRA volunteers in his car. Following the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, Gogarty sided with the pro-Treaty government (headed by his close friend Arthur Griffith) and was made a Free State Senator. When Griffith fell ill during the summer of 1922, Gogarty frequently attended his bedside. His death on 12 August 1922 had a profound effect on Gogarty

Four of the old bells, which are more than 300 years old, have been preserved for their historic value and hang above the new ones in the tower of the historic church.
The sounds of the new bells could be heard again earlier this month, ringing out across the area.
A spokesman from the bell ringers said: We are absolutely delighted with these bells. We hope that those who were within earshot enjoyed the ringing as much as we did. Listen out for us on Sunday morning.
After an absence of six months, the new bells for St Wilfrid's Church arrived on Friday, July 5.
The new ring of 10 bells has been cast at the foundry of John Taylor & Co of Loughborough, with each donated by individuals or groups in the village.
Ringers and parishioners had the chance to visit the foundry to watch the castings take place.
Nick Thomson, ringing master at Grappenhall Bell Ringers, said: The tenor bell (the heaviest bell in the ring) weighs just over half a ton, and has been donated by the bell ringers themselves.
The ninth bell has been donated by the PCC and is in remembrance of those who fell in the First World War ? as a special tribute to the fallen, the foundry has cast a ring of poppies in the crown of the bell.
The bells were taken into the church and put on display so that they could be viewed before they make the journey up the tower.
The bell ringers have been using churches in Stockton Heath and Stretton to continue with their weekly practises during the absence.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XMXM - Deanston distillery is a Single Malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the banks of the River Teith, eight miles from the historic town of Stirling, at the gateway to the dramatic Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. It is the largest distillery owned by Scotch whisky producer Distell Group Limited, who also own Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay and Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull.
Deanston Distillery started life in 1785 as a cotton mill designed by Sir Richard Arkwright, and remained as such for 180 years until it was transformed into a distillery in 1966. The constant supply of pure water from the River Teith contributed to the decision to turn the mill into a distillery and Deanston is now the only distillery in Scotland to be self-sufficient in electricity, with power generated by an on-site hydro-energy facility. Deanston sits in the Highland single malt region of Scotland and produces whisky which is handmade by ten local craftsmen, un-chill filtered, natural colour and bottled at a strength of 46.3% ABV.
In 1841 James Smith retired from the mill. Operations continued but by 1848, production at Deanston was in decline. The turn of the twentieth century saw a further decrease in demand for cotton and the workforce was scaled down from 1500 to 500 people. Things steadily got worse until the mill was closed on 2 April 1965.
It was the collective efforts of James Finlay & Co, Brodie Hepburn & Co, and A.B (Sandy) Grant, known together as Deanston Distillers Ltd, who converted Deanston Mill into a malt whisky distillery in 1965. The soft, fast flow of the River Teith and a whisky boom in Scotland at the time made the site ideal for whisky production. The distillery was opened on 17 October 1966 after an extensive refurbishment costing ?300,000, employing 20 local people, but taking just nine months.Three floors were removed to make room for four copper stills and a mash tun. The statue was unveiled on 23 June, Turing's birthday, in 2001. It was conceived by Richard Humphry, a barrister from Stockport, who set up the Alan Turing Memorial Fund in order to raise the necessary funds. Humphry had come up with the idea of a statue after seeing Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Code starring the actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and Jacobi became the patron of the fund. Glyn Hughes, an industrial sculptor from Adlington near Westhoughton, was commissioned to sculpt the statue. The Fund eventually raised around ?15,000, which was far short of the ?50,000 needed to have the statue cast in Britain. No major computer company donated to the fund, which was, according to the sculptor, because Turing was not American. The statue was cast in China.
Turing is shown holding an apple?a symbol classically used to represent forbidden love, as well as being the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the object that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation, and the means of Turing's own death. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912-1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it would appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'.
A plinth at the statue's feet says 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation saying 'Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.' The sculptor buried his old Amstrad computer, which was an early popular home computer, under the plinth.

The Rochdale Canal met the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield in 1805 and in the 1830s they were linked with the Mersey and Irwell Navigation by two short cuts. In 1848 the two viaducts of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway crossed the area and joined each other, two further viaducts and one mainline station Manchester Central railway station followed. It has a tram station, Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop (formerly G-Mex) providing frequent Manchester Metrolink services to Eccles, Bury, Altrincham, Manchester Piccadilly, East Didsbury and Rochdale.
Castlefield was designated a conservation area in 1980 and the United Kingdom's first designated Urban Heritage Park in 1982

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.

Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise ? the food on offer is second to none!

The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m?) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. local government administration is centred at the nearby Municipal Buildings. The town hall was built between 1749 and 1754 to a design by John Wood the Elder replacing an earlier town hall nearby. An extension to the north designed by James Wyatt was added in 1785. Following a fire in 1795 the hall was largely rebuilt and a dome designed by Wyatt was built. Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the town hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.
The ground floor contains the city's Council Chamber and a Hall of Remembrance for the Liverpool servicemen killed in the First World War. The upper floor consists of a suite of lavishly decorated rooms which are used for a variety of events and functions. Conducted tours of the building are arranged for the general public and the hall is licensed for weddings.

New Dock was built in 1843 and was in service until 1990. The Royal Armouries Museum opened in 1996. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. I've seen Mark E Smith at a range of venues, from sweaty club gigs to confusing 100,000 Gorillaz fans at Glastonbury's main stage, but to see Manchester's most dissident music icon at the city's cathedral felt like it would be a surreal experience.
When the man himself strode past paying customers into the main nave of the grand old building, with the assurance of a man who very much owned the place, it was a double-take moment which seemed fitting of the whole event.
The Fall have been an unusually settled outfit in recent years, now on their fourth consecutive studio album with the same line-up.
For a band which has clocked up almost 70 members ? one of whom was reportedly fired by its iconic frontman and dictator-in-chief for ordering a salad ? it's been a period of relative calm which could have brought accusations of sterility.
The rousing opener ?Your Future, Our Clutter' quickly dispels any fears of the serene venue taking away any of The Fall's traditional sting, if anything the acoustics of the cathedral add another layer to Smith's barking, hectoring vocals.

A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor north?south connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

many embarked from Liverpool to travel to North America while others remained in city.[5] Because of the increase in the Catholic population, the co-adjutor Bishop of Liverpool, Alexander Goss (1814?1872), saw the need for a cathedral. The location he chose was the grounds of St. Edward's College on St. Domingo Road, Everton.[6]
In 1853 Goss, then bishop, awarded the commission for the building of the new cathedral to Edward Welby Pugin (1833?1875). By 1856 the Lady Chapel of the new cathedral had been completed. Due to financial resources being diverted to the education of Catholic children, work on the building ceased at this point and the Lady Chapel ? now named Our Lady Immaculate ? served as parish church to the local Catholic population until its demolition in the 1980s.

It is closely associated with the manor house of Brympton d'Evercy. The d'Evercy family were responsible for building the church. Thomas d'Evercy purchased the estate in 1220. Sir Peter founded a chantry at Brympton d'Evercy in 1306, endowing a priest with a messuage and 40 acres (16 ha) in the parish. New aisles were added in 1469.
It has been suggested that this is the building today known as the priest house, but no structural evidence exists to support this claim. The church contains monuments to Sir John Sydenham (died 1626) and his family who were lords of the manor.
Some of the effigies within the church were originally in the churchyard but were moved into the church in the 19th century and restored by John Edward Carew.
The parish is within the benefice of Odcombe with Brympton, Lufton and Montacute, which is within the deanery of Yeovil

The whole structure is faced in ceramic mosaics, pieces from local ceramic companies' products, glass beads, and tiles.
A number of themes have been incorporated into the design, including animals and plants indigenous to the area, a picture of the church, together with mouldings of heads and other features from gravestones and monuments in the churchyard, images of the traditional coal and bottle kilns that made the city famous, as well as high-tech industries, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, whose funeral service was held at the Church, and a depiction of the Trent and Mersey Canal merging into the Sea of Galilee and then into the River Trent as it wraps round the base of the mosaic, unifying the design for the whole structure. Within this ribbon of mosaic, ammonites and different varieties of fish are depicted.
On the front of the bench, facing away from the church, are plaques depicting St Peter's Church and School, interspersed with heads, both European and Asian. The base of the seat features an image of two men in a boat, with a mast in the shape of an upside-down cross and two crossed keys (both emblems of St Peter, to whom the nearby church is dedicated).
The wildlife depicted on the right hand end of the bench includes a bat with outstretched wings, a squirrel, a rabbit, a frog, a snail, a fox, a butterfly, a robin, a blackbird, a magpie, a hedgehog and a wren.
The back of the bench celebrates the industrial heritage of Stoke on Trent. Its designs includes plaques featuring men in flat caps carrying pots to the kiln on wooden boards, bottle kilns, pit winding gear and factory chimneys. These are interspersed with smaller pieces commemorating the pottery produced in the area. Below the seat, the central design is of two cartoon-like figures in a canal barge.

In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary Helen MacGregor of Comar (1671-1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James, Ranald, Coll and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). They also adopted a cousin named Duncan.

In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary Helen MacGregor of Comar (1671-1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James, Ranald, Coll and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). They also adopted a cousin named Duncan.

The word 'twelve' is the largest number with a single-morpheme name in English. Etymology suggests that 'twelve' (similar to 'eleven') arises from the Germanic compound twalif 'two-leftover', so a literal translation would yield 'two remaining [after having ten taken]'. This compound meaning may have been transparent to speakers of Old English, but the modern form 'twelve' is quite opaque. Only the remaining tw- hints that twelve and two are related.
A group of twelve things is called a duodecad. The ordinal adjective is duodenary, twelfth. The adjective referring to a group consisting of twelve things is duodecuple.
The number twelve is often used as a sales unit in trade, and is often referred to as a dozen. Twelve dozen are known as a gross. (Note that there are thirteen items in a baker's dozen.). the expression 'baker's dozen' dates to the 13th century in one of the earliest English statutes, instituted during the reign of Henry III (1216\u20131272), called the Assize of Bread and Ale. Bakers who were found to have shortchanged customers (some variations say that they would sell hollow bread) could be subject to severe punishment. To guard against the punishment of losing a hand to an axe, a baker would give 13 for the price of 12, to be certain of not being known as a cheat. Specifically, the practice of baking 13 items for an intended dozen was insurance against 'short measure', on the basis that one of the 13 could be lost, eaten, burnt, or ruined in some way, leaving the baker with the original legal dozen. The practice can be seen in the guild codes of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London.
Force 12 on the Beaufort wind force scale corresponds to the maximum wind speed of a hurricane. The duodenum (from Latin duodecim, 'twelve') is the first part of the small intestine, that is about twelve inches (30 cm) long. More precisely, this section of the intestine was measured not in inches but in fingerwidths. In fact, in German the name of the duodenum is Zw\u00f6lffingerdarm and in Dutch the name is twaalfvingerige darm, both meaning 'twelve-finger bowel'.

The name Stornoway (Scottish Gaelic-'Steornabhagh') derives from 'Sjornavagr', the Old Norse for 'steering bay'. Stornoway has been settled since at least Viking times although there is archaeological evidence of Neolithic activity in the near vicinity of the town.
King James VI granted ownership of Lewis to the Mackenzies of Kintail in 1610. By about 1680, Lord Seaforth had established his estate house, Seaforth Lodge, on the Gearraidh Chruaidh, an area of rough sheiling ground on the west side of Stornoway harbour. Parts of this original building can still be seen within the stripped out walls of the mezzanine at the rear of the present Castle.
The castle was built in the years 1847-57 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese Opium trade. It was designed by the Glasgow architect Charles Wilson.
In 1918, the Lewis estate including the castle was bought by soap industrialist Lord Leverhulme from the Matheson family. He gifted the castle to the people of Stornoway parish in 1923.
During World War II the Castle was taken over as accommodation for air and ground crew of 700 Naval Air Squadron, who operated a detachment of six Supermarine Walrus aircraft from a slipway at Cuddy Point in the Grounds. The base was referred to as HMS Mentor. It was also used for accommodation for students of Lews Castle College in the 1950s.
Today the building is owned by the local council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CNES) and is category A listed building.
The rather spooky wicker woman in the grounds of the castle (castle green) was created in July 2010 at the time of the Hebridean Celtic Festival.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK7Y - 80080 was built at Brighton in March 1954. It was based on the Eastern Region working on the London, Tilbury and Southend Line (LT&S) working commuter services out of London until that route was electrified in 1962.
It was withdrawn from service in July 1965 whilst based at Croes Newydd which by this time was a London Midland Region after being transferred from the Western Region in September 1963.
80080 was then sold for scrap to Woodham Brothers at Barry. It arrived at Barry in January 1966 and it remained there for the next fourteen years during which time it suffered the ravages weather, metal thieves, and later preservationists removing parts. When the locomotive was purchased in the autumn of 1980 all non-ferrous and motion parts were missing and it was no more than a skeletal hulk.
80080 was purchased for restoration in 1980 and moved to Matlock in November of that year but was moved to the Midland Railway at Butterley thee years later for restoration.
80080 also became the first steam engine to work a normal stopping passenger service on the mainline for over a quarter of a century back in March 1993, it worked for over a week on the Settle and Carlisle line working from Carlisle to Kirkby Stephen and back. It also returned to the famous Cambrian network in 1992.
80080 returned to steam following an overhaul in November 2010 and shortly afterwards was hired to the East Lancs Railway. In December 2016 the locomotive returned to the West Shed of the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust where it will undergo some engineering work after failing its annual boiler inspection.It is understood that three of its superheater flue tubes failed.

It is the seventh highest in the country, the fifth highest parish church in the UK, after the St. Walburge's Church, Preston, St. James Church, Louth, St Mary Redcliffe, and St. Wulfram's Church, Grantham.
Within the church, St Ann's Chapel was founded by Thomas Massey, rector of Warrington from 1448 to 1464. It continued to belong to the Massey family until they died out in 1748. The chapel was then acquired by the Patten family who built a vault to bury members of the family, the last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892. The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel. In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.
The gateway to the church dates from the 18th century. It consists of two stone rusticated gate piers surmounted by a cornice and urns. Between these are two iron gates over which is a curved iron arch. To the sides are low stone side walls and small iron side gates for pedestrians. The gateway is listed Grade II. Also listed Grade II are the cobbles and the pavement leading to the gateway.

A church in a delightful setting of thatched cottages and the George and Dragon pub. If you visit on a sunday, check out the cakes and afternoon teas served by the church helpers (summer only).
Parishioners use the collection envelope to leave an anonymous donation. These days they can gift aid it etc, this was not the case in the 1960's when a ten bob not would be a quite vast sum and six pence (from two three penny bits) maybe more the norm to be dropped into the plate.
The nickel brass threepence was used between 1937?1970. A strange coin sometimes called thripp'nce, thrupp'nce, threpp'nce or thripp'ny bit, thrupp'ny bit by grannies and others alike.
The english brown ten bob note note here was issued by issued by the Bank of England. It started to disappear when the multi-edged fifty pence piece was introduced, a great silver medalion of a thing, larger than the one today in circulation

Light painting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera.
The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. Light Painting Photography can be traced back to the year 1914 when Frank Gilbreth, along with his wife Lillian Moller Gilbreth, used small lights and the open shutter of a camera to track the motion of manufacturing and clerical workers.
Man Ray, in his 1935 series Space Writing, was the first known art photographer to use the technique and Barbara Morgan began making light paintings in 1940.

A track from the late great Phil Lynott. I heard this live finishing up a set at the Manchester Apollo in 1979 I think, December time.
The band often used to finish up with this track in celebration of a guy called Ted Carroll. He had brought the band to London from Dublin in the early 70's and he ran a Saturday record stall called 'Rock On' on Golborne Road, Off Ladbroke Grove market.
Carroll was involved with early Chiswick label artists and the founders of Stiff records (motto 'If it aint Stiff, it aint worth a f**k). Thus was instrumental in producing and pressing a great many of the 70's vinyls in my loft. He never was involved in a Thin Lizzy release however, Decca and Phongram were the bands labels, with the former involved with the band releasing an album of Deep Purple covers.
Thin Lizzy's leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was certainly the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities.
For a great introduction to Thin Lizzy, the live album 'Live and Dangerous' is your only option. There is some disagreement over just how much of the album is actually recorded live. Producer Tony Visconti claimed that the only parts that weren't overdubbed were the drums and the audience. However Brian Robertson has refuted this, saying that he had refused Lynott's request to re-record a guitar solo, and that the only overdubs were backing vocals and some guitar parts by Gorham. He added, 'It's just not true. The only reason we said that it was recorded all over was obviously for tax reasons... so everything that Visconti claims is boll**ks.

The Fender Cyclone was a series of electric guitars made by Fender. Introduced in late 1997, the Cyclone body is similarly styled to the Mustang but with a significantly different specification. The body of the Cyclone is a quarter of an inch thicker than the body of a Mustang and is made of poplar, whereas contemporary Mustang reissues were made of basswood.
The Fender Cyclone was discontinued in 2007.

The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

The arena is the only indoor venue in the UK to be built following a layout of 360-degree seating. While the Class 325 bears a resemblance to the Networker series of DMUs and EMUs, they are based on the Class 319 EMU. The Class 325 was British Rail's newest unit to take over parcels workings on electrified lines.
In the early 1990s, the parcels sector of British Rail was seeking a fleet of multiple units that would be more cost-effective to run than the locomotive hauled stock it was using. The initial proposal was to convert a number of redundant Class 307 units that were in the process of being withdrawn from passenger service into Class 300 parcels units. Owing to the age of these units however, it was subsequently decided to procure a fleet of new trains. These units, which were ordered in 1994, were initially given the TOPS classification Class 350, before being changed to Class 325.
The 16 units were built at ABB Derby between 1995 and 1996. They are very similar to Class 319 units, sharing the same traction equipment and body design, but are fitted with cabs of the same design as the ABB Networker family.
TOPS numbers are on the front of the cabs under the driver's window in a non-standard typeface (Plantin, the then corporate typeface of Royal Mail), and the units were numbered 325001 - 325016. The units are fitted with large round oleo buffers, and have no gangways between carriages. They carry a livery of Royal Mail red, with two yellow stripes running along the lower bodyside before turning sharply backwards and pointing up towards the roof, black cab window surrounds and a full yellow warning panel.
