Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.

Police reform in Northern Ireland will not be altered if unionists boycott the board overseeing the changes, the British Government insisted today.
A Northern Ireland Office spokesman rejected claims from the anti-Good Friday Agreement Democratic Unionists that unionists could secure a better policing plan if they united and opposed the current proposals.
As the Rev Ian Paisley's party met at Stormont to consider its response to the Government's plan, the NIO said the package was ''non-negotiable''.
''The Government's position was spelt out very clearly by the Secretary of State on Tuesday,'' a spokesman said.
''The implementation plan is non-negotiable. No rethink will take place. This is the plan.''
The NIO spokesman was responding to DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson's claim that if David Trimble's Ulster Unionists agreed to join them in withholding support for the plan, the reforms could not go ahead.
Signalling his party would not take its seats on the Policing Board if the UUP did not nominate representatives, he claimed: At the meeting we held recently with John Reid, he indicated the Government could not proceed with the plan if he could not get, on the one hand the support of either the SDLP, Sinn Fein or both, and on the other, the UUP, DUP or both.
That was the criteria operated the last time around. The Government's plans were stopped because neither the SDLP nor Sinn Fein would support it and as a result the reforms were made much more acceptable to nationalists in the SDLP.
The logical argument, therefore, is if unionists do not support this implementation plan, then it cannot succeed. The Government will have to amend it to make it more acceptable to unionists and go back to negotiations.

Bushmills had a population of 1,295 in the 2011 Census.[3] It is located 60 miles (97 km) from Belfast, 11 miles (18 km) from Ballycastle and 9 miles (14 km) from Coleraine. The village owes its name to the River Bush and to a large watermill that was built there in the early 17th century. It is home to the Old Bushmills Distillery, which produces Irish whiskey, and is near the Giant's Causeway.

Bushmills is classified as a village (population 1,0002,499) by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). On Census day (27 March 2011) there were 1,295 people living in Bushmills. Of these:
20.39% were under 16 years old and 21.47% were aged 65 and above
46.64% of the population were male and 53.36% were female
and
3.47% were from a Catholic community background and 92.90% were from a 'Protestant and Other Christian (including Christian related)' community background.
Places of interest
The village is best known as the location of the Old Bushmills Distillery. The distillery's products include the Bushmills Original and Black Bush blends, as well as the 10-, 12-, 16-, and 21-year-old Bushmills Single Malts. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of distilling starting in the area the distillery released a unique whiskey called the 1608 which included crystal malt. The distillery draws its water, not from the River Bush itself, but from a tributary known as Saint Columbs Rill.

Airlift Hill will provide a nature haven and peaceful walking route for new homeowners, the business park and the wider community with over 40,000 new trees planted and thousands of metres of hedgerow created.
The park boasts views as far as Manchester and showcases the fascinating history of the site with a restored Pickett-Hamilton Fort at the base of the hill. Having opened in 1940, RAF Burtonwood was the UK's largest military airbase during World War II and was responsible for the handling of over 15,000 US aircraft.
Following the Second World War the base supported allied forces in the Berlin Airlift, which saw supplies such as coal and flour sent to the people of Berlin as they were kept under a soviet blockade.
A competition was held to name the new park with the children of Barrow Hall Lane Primary School tasked with the challenge of coming up with suggestions based on the history of the site. Freya Johnson's suggestion of Airlift Hill was the winner and she was awarded a commemorative plaque so she can remember her achievement in the future.
The park is managed by the Land Trust, a national land management charity who manage over 80 green spaces in the UK, including several spots in Warrington.

Barrow Hall Primary School looks onto the park and the children will be using the site for regular outdoor classes. Sisters Pippa and Tegan Walmsley, aged seven and eight-years-old, suggested the name The Landings for the park, which will now be the name for the outdoor classroom area on the hill. Pippa and Tegan were awarded a certificate to commemorate naming the area.

The fort could be raised to about 2 feet 6 inches (0.76 m) above ground level where it would be a physical impediment to aircraft and vehicles and from where a small crew could fire with rifles or light machine guns.

By reason of its forming no obstacle to use of ground for flying or traffic, the post can be sited in places where not even a rifleman or small post can be put, and can bring fire on to ground which otherwise could not be covered at all or only at extreme ranges.
Pickett-Hamilton Fort Advisory Committee (1940)
The open spaces of airfields were very vulnerable to attack by airborne troops and it was felt that it was particularly important to defend them effectively. However, conventional defences such as pillboxes and trenches could not be installed without danger to friendly aircraft. At this time a number of private companies contacted the government with their own design ideas.
The Pickett-Hamilton fort was designed by Francis Norman Pickett and Donald St Aubyn Hamilton. Pickett (18871957) was an engineer. He graduated from London University in 1907, and from 1918 to 1931 he was Proprietor of the firm of F. N. Pickett et Fils, engaged on the demolition of ammunition. This business encountered many difficulties but Pickett made a great deal of money before the company eventually failed. Pickett spent much of the early '20s involved in motor racing. He subsequently became managing director of Kaycee, Ltd., in 193135, of Consolidated Rubber Manufacturers, Ltd., in 193538, and of Ocean Salts (Products), Ltd., in 1938. Senior officers rebuff claims police focusing on woke' causes and highlight disconnected approach over the last 12 years'
Cuts under Conservative-led governments have had a negative effect upon policing, the organisation representing senior officers has said, in a rebuff to claims that forces are focusing on woke causes.
The National Police Chiefs Council said in a statement that crime detection and charge rates had dropped following austerity measures and a fall in police numbers since 2010.
It comes after a report by the right-leaning thinktank Policy Exchange, which said on Tuesday that public confidence could be damaged if police showed solidarity against discrimination or expressed political views.
A National Police Chiefs Council spokesperson said: Detection and charge rates for a range of crimes have fallen over the past five years.
This has been impacted by austerity and the loss of thousands of police officers and staff, increasing complexity of policing and crime, growing demand related to mental ill health and impact of backlogs in the court system.
The NPCC's statement followed Monday's release of the Policy Exchange paper entitled Crime & Policing: What Do We want from the Next Prime Minister?
Written by the former Met detective chief inspector David Spencer, the 31-page report questioned whether officers should take part in acts that may be seen as political, such as taking the knee during protests.

The Aberconwy Centre opened to the west of the Arcadia theatre in 1982. The conference venue had space for over 1,000 conference attendees. It was redeveloped in 1994, and it was renamed as the North Wales Theatre and Conference Centre. It hosted a 1,500-seat auditorium/theatre, as well as a 700 square metres (7,500 sq ft) conference hall with capacity for 800 seated, or 1,000 standing, people
In July 2005 the Arcadia theatre was demolished to make way for an atrium and meeting and conference rooms adjoining the North Wales Theatre and Conference Centre. The building was also extended to the west. After the redevelopment, the venue hosted a new 1,550 square metres (16,700 sq ft) arena, capable of hosting 1,800 seated, or 2,500 standing people, increasing the overall capacity of the venue to over 5,000 people. The western extension incorporated a café, restaurant and a box office, as well as office space.

Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The Vögte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Liverpool has been stripped of its coveted world heritage status after Unesco blamed years of development for an irreversible loss to the historic value of its Victorian docks.
The UN's heritage body concluded at a meeting in China on Wednesday that the outstanding universal value of Liverpool's waterfront had been destroyed by new buildings, including Everton football club's new £500m stadium.
The decision is a humiliating blow for the city and gives Liverpool the ignominious distinction of being only the third place to lose the status in nearly 50 years. The other delisted sites were Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe valley in Germany in 2009.
Liverpool has enjoyed world heritage status since 2004 placing it alongside the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China as recognition for its role as a major trading power during the British empire and the architectural beauty of its waterfront.
The threat of being delisted has hung over Liverpool since 2012 as Unesco warned that development had significantly changed the city's skyline and was destroying the heritage value of its waterfront.
The decision was announced by Tian Xuejun, the chair of the Unesco world heritage committee, at a virtual conference hosted in China on Wednesday.
The UN agency said development such as Liverpool Waters, a £5.5bn project by Peel Group to transform previously disused land, had led to a serious deterioration and irreversible loss to the area's outstanding universal value along with significant loss to its authenticity and integrity.
It said that as a result of these projects the waterfront had deteriorated to the extent that it has lost characteristics that led to its inclusion on the world heritage list in 2004.

The street roughly follows the line of the via praetoria of Eboracum, the Roman city, which ran between what are now St Helen's Square and York Minster.
The street appears to have lost importance in the Anglian and Jorvik period. York Minster was rebuilt in the 11th century, and stone for it was brought up the road, from a quay behind what is now York Guildhall. This appears to have brought the street back to prominence, and new building plots were laid adjoining the north-eastern part of the street. This part of the street lay in the Liberty of St Peter's, associated with the Minster, and many of its buildings belonged to the church, the whole area soon becoming built up, mostly with tenements. The street was known as Stonegate by 1119, probably named for stone paving, which would have been unique in the city at the time, although an alternative theory links the name to the stone hauled up to the Minster.
Because of the location of the street, it has historically been used for civic processions, from the York Guildhall to the Minster. It was also the site where three of the historic York Mystery Plays were performed. In 1570, Guy Fawkes was born at a house on the street.
Nikolaus Pevsner described the street as perhaps the most attractive [street in the city], and one of the busiest. Narrow, quite long, and with a variety of good things. Due to its popularity with tourists, the street was pedestrianised in 1974. It was repaved in York stone in 2020

When the pier was opened on 30 May 1868, it was 503 yards in length, 131 yards of which was a landing jetty for use at low tide. The first manager of the pier was Robert Bickerstaffe, coxswain of the first Blackpool lifeboat. Blackpool's lifeboat station is located next to Central Pier.
From the start, the new pier's emphasis was on fun rather than the genteel relaxation provided at North Pier. In the early days fun was provided mainly by dancing facilities, but in the 20th century, roller skating was introduced along with fairground rides and amusement machines. Steamboat excursions departed from the landing jetty as they did from North Pier. The dance halls became less popular after the Second World War and the facilities were adapted into a theatre, bars and amusement arcades by the 1970s

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
A church has been on the site since the 13th century. There have been two major reconstructions, the last being in 18981901. Two ancient chapels remain dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Inside the church are a number of tombs and memorials, mainly to the memory of the Savage and Legh families
The plan of the church consists of a six-bay nave with north and south aisles and a chancel with vestries to the north and south. The tower is at the west end of the south aisle. The Legh Chapel extends from the south aisle and the larger Savage Chapel is to the east of this. At the west end of the Savage Chapel is a porch surmounted by a tower. The main tower incorporates some of the earlier masonry and includes some of the original carved stones and heraldic shields representing local noble families. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0KCP - Roe Street Chapel also known as Kidd's Chapel, was built in 1829 by a breakaway group from St. George's Independent Chapel for Protestant Dissenters, which had been erected in 1822. This group of the congregation wanted a Congregational or Independent Chapel while the others wished to become part of the Established Church. As a result St. George's, in High Street, see below, was consecrated by the Bishop of Chester. Those Dissenters who had contributed to the original building as shareholders got their money back! The break-away group worshipped initially at Brunswick Methodist Church but then built Roe Street Chapel. In 1926 the congregation united with that of Frost's Chapel at Park Green to form Macclefield Congregational Church. The building was used for a time as a parish hall by the Roman Catholic St. Alban's church. It was used as a dance hall in the middle of the 20th century. It is now the Salvation Army Citadel

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0KCR - Built in 1775 by local industrialist Charles Roe, Christ Church was constructed of brick, using innovative cast iron columns to support the galleries. This is a very early use of cast iron in a church and may reflect Roe's innovative and entrepreneurial character.
The east window glass was given in memory of Charles Roe's son, daughter-in-law and grandson, and Roe's ornate monument, in marble, is on the south wall. It lists a detailed description of his achievements and shows in relief his silk mill (with waterwheel), his copper works in Liverpool, and Christ Church itself.
The interior resembles a modern concert hall designed so that the congregation could all see and hear the preacher. The original pulpit was more than 3.5 metres high, allowing the preacher to command the attention of his congregation throughout this large church. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism preached from this pulpit at least 12 times. Though now somewhat altered, the pulpit still survives. The outspoken preacher David Simpson, a radical socialist who championed the cause of the poor and helped found the Sunday School Movement was the much-loved first minister of Christ Church. A window depicting the Good Samaritan, commemorates him.
The church has a fine ring of 10 bells, which are still used regularly.

The River Dee was the traditional boundary of the Kingdom of Gwynedd in Wales for centuries, possibly since its founding in the 5th century. It was recorded in the 13th century (in mainstream Middle English orthography, lacking the letters v and w) as flumen Dubr Duiu
the name appears to derive from the Brythonic dēvā: River of the Goddess or Holy River. The river is personified as the war and fate goddess Aerfen.
The river name inspired the name of Roman fortress Deva Victrix.
It is the only river in the UK to be subject to a Water Protection Zone along its whole length down to Chester weir

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMPX1 - Four hundred metres east of Stone Circle, and probably predating it by over 1000 years, the Whispering Knights is a 'portal dolmen' burial chamber that consists of four upright stones and a large fallen capstone. The so-called portal' facade is formed by three stones that look like a giant doorway facing down the hill and it was probably intended to be seen from that side. Originally there were two or three more uprights to support the capstone which would have been placed on top, possibly at a rakish angle, to form a table-like 'dolmen' structure. At one time it was believed to be part of a long barrow, but excavations in the 1980s suggested that it is more likely to have been free-standing and intended to impress. The very large pillar-like stone on the left of the portal is the largest of all the Rollright Stones, and with the capstone in place on top (as it was until the 18th century) the chamber would have been even more striking. It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying.

The town hall was extended in the 1930s to the designs of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has been designated a Grade II* listed building by English Heritage
Following the incorporation of Bolton as a municipal borough in 1838, Bolton Corporation decided to use Little Bolton Town Hall as its regular meeting place and it remained as such for some 35 years. The current town hall was promoted by the mayor, J.R. Wolfendon, in the early 1860s. The cost was expected to be between £70,000 and £80,000 but more than doubled to £167,000, equivalent to £15,740,000 in 2023. Bolton Corporation held a competition for a new town hall design in the 1860s. It was won by a pupil of Cuthbert Brodrick, architect William Hill from Leeds.
For his design of a scaled-down version of Leeds Town Hall, Hill was awarded £120 (equivalent to £12,000 in 2020) for the design, which originally included no tower, but one was added later. The original building on a rectangular plan is designed in the neoclassical style in the form of a temple with a tall baroque-style clocktower. The town hall has a high basement storey and two principal floors above in sandstone ashlar which is rusticated at basement level. It has a broad flight of steps up to a five-bay portico with a pediment in which there is a high-relief sculpture by William Calder Marshall.

The building was designed by Waddington and Son of Burnley, Lancashire and opened in 1878. The total cost, donated by Atkinson, was £15,000. In 192324 the building was extended by incorporating an adjacent bank on the corner of Eastbank Street, that had been built for the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank in 1879. The interior of the combined building was remodeled in the late 20th century, and the interiors were internally integrated. As of 2014 the organisation of the library and art gallery is integrated with the Southport Arts Centre and it is known as The Atkinson.
Original building
The original building is constructed in sandstone with a slate roof in Neoclassical style. It is in three storeys and has a symmetrical three-bay front. The central bay projects forward and contains a square-headed doorway above which is a roundel and a band of three panels. It is flanked by pairs of engaged Corinthian columns, above which is an entablature with a frieze inscribed with ATKINSON FREE LIBRARY and a pediment.

The building was designed by Waddington and Son of Burnley, Lancashire and opened in 1878. The total cost, donated by Atkinson, was £15,000. In 192324 the building was extended by incorporating an adjacent bank on the corner of Eastbank Street, that had been built for the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank in 1879. The interior of the combined building was remodeled in the late 20th century, and the interiors were internally integrated. As of 2014 the organisation of the library and art gallery is integrated with the Southport Arts Centre and it is known as The Atkinson.
Original building
The original building is constructed in sandstone with a slate roof in Neoclassical style. It is in three storeys and has a symmetrical three-bay front. The central bay projects forward and contains a square-headed doorway above which is a roundel and a band of three panels. It is flanked by pairs of engaged Corinthian columns, above which is an entablature with a frieze inscribed with ATKINSON FREE LIBRARY and a pediment.

The hospital was founded in 1738 as a general hospital for the poor in the city centre, where the frontage of its building still reads Royal Mineral Water Hospital. Thus it is known locally as The Mineral Hospital or The Min. The hospital moved to a new building at the RUH site in 2019.
From the 16th century the needs of the deserving poor who came to take the healing waters of the Roman Baths were recognised and an act of 1597 gave them the right to free use of the waters. This attracted beggars and, although the act was repealed in 1714, large numbers of people were still attracted to the city and St John's Hospital was only accessible to local residents. Plans were suggested for a hospital to receive them in 1716 with supporters which included Lady Elizabeth Hastings, Henry Hoare, Joseph Jekyll, William Oliver and Beau Nash.
The hospital was founded in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital. It provided care for the impoverished sick who were attracted to Bath because of the supposed healing properties of the mineral water from the spa. The original building, which was designed by John Wood the Elder, was built with Bath stone donated by Ralph Allen and completed in 1742. It was later enlarged, firstly in 1793 by the addition of an attic storey and later in 1860 by a second building erected on the west side of the earlier edifice. There is a fine pediment, in Bath stone, on the 1860 building depicting the parable of the Good Samaritan. The building was classified as Grade II* listed in 1972.
In 1993, the hospital became an NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in rheumatic disease and rehabilitation, which received a three-star rating in 2005. The hospital had a large brain injury rehabilitation service with separate units for adults, adolescents and children

But how to start cycling to work? You don't need a complicated programme or a detailed plan to start cycling, just a bike and the willingness to give it a go.
If you haven't tried it before you've probably got some questions about how to begin, but with a little preparation and our bike commuting tips below you can enjoy a healthy, cheap start to the day.
Can I cycle that far?
A rough rule of thumb is that most people can cover about five miles in half an hour. It might take some time to build up to the distance you need to cover but in the meantime you're fitting physical activity into your daily routine instead of trying to find time to exercise after work.
If you've got a long way to travel why not put your bike in the car and just cycle the last bit? Chances are this will be the bit that involves traffic jams, frustration and idling engines. You might be surprised by how quickly you're ready to increase the distance too.
I don't feel confident cycling on busy roads
Get some cycle training if you think you need it, especially if you haven't cycled for a long time.
Look into routes that avoid busy roads. A common mistake is to assume that the only route to work is on the main road with all the rush-hour cars.
If anyone from your workplace already cycles your way ask them about the routes they take or even ask them to bike buddy with you.
My bike isn't in great condition
If you're not sure whether your bike is safe, find time to check it over. Take it to a local bike mechanic if you're still not certain.
If it's safe to ride, just give it a go. You can think about whether a better bike might make it even more enjoyable once you've decided to continue cycling

St Mary's church has a north porch and windows dating from the 14th century. During the 15th and 16th centuries chapels were added, modifying the nave and the chancel extended.
In July 1685, during the Monmouth Rebellion, the Duke of Monmouth watched from the tower as the forces of King James II assembled, at Westonzoyland, under the command of the Earl of Feversham prior to the Battle of Sedgemoor. Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.

These names have been derived by both the sculptures location on Broadway Junction (located above the A12 Westlink and in close proximity to the Falls Road) and in reference to its shape made from two, spherical, metal structures.
The RISE sculpture was designed by Wolfgang Buttress and consists of a geodesic sphere suspended inside a larger, 30 m (98 ft) diameter sphere and stands at an overall height of 37.5 m (123 ft). Geodesic refers to the shortest path between two points on a curve so that in the case of the RISE sculpture, adjacent connections on each of the spheres are connected using straight bars, thereby minimising the distance between two points. At 30m wide and 37.5m tall, RISE is the biggest public art sculpture in Belfast.
RISE was commissioned by Belfast City Council and built in 2011 as part of a multimillion-pound road improvement programme. It now sits atop of the A12 Westlink Underpass (a grade-separated junction) where, according to a 2009 NI assembly report, sees approximately 80,000 cars on average flow past it each day.

The globe-shaped, white and silver steel sculpture is a representation of a new sun rising to celebrate a new chapter in the history of Belfast. The inner sphere represents the sun rising over the bogs and the outer sphere represents the sun's halo, while the angled, steel supports are to represent the reeds of the bog meadows that extended more widely across the area before it was developed. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T25 - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNXF - Newton, sometimes known as Newton after Blake, is a 1995 work by the sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi. The large bronze sculpture is displayed on a high plinth in the piazza outside the British Library in London.
The sculpture is based on William Blake's 1795 print of Newton: Personification of Man Limited by Reason, which depicts a naked Isaac Newton sitting on ledge beside a mossy rock face while measuring with a pair of compasses or dividers. The print was intended by Blake to criticise Newton's profane knowledge, usurping the sacred knowledge and power of the creator Urizen, with the scientist turning away from nature to focus on his books.
Paolozzi had admired Blake since viewing a large print of Newton at the Tate Gallery in the 1940s. He was also a friend of Colin St John Wilson, the architect of the British Library, since they both participated in the This is Tomorrow exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956. Wilson intended to site a seated sculpture at the junction of the two main axes in the piazza of his library. Paolozzi was then working on a sculpture of Newton, and he was commissioned to create the sculpture for the library. The new library was constructed from 1982 to 1999, and the sculpture was installed in 1995.
The sculpture includes Paolozzi's self-portrait as the naked Newton, measuring the universe with his dividers. The eyes were copied from Michelangelo's David. It can be interpreted as symbolising a confluence of the two cultures, the arts and the sciences, and illustrating how Newton changed our view of the world to one determined by mathematical laws. The sculpture makes the body resemble a mechanical object, joined with bolts at the shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles. The sculptures shows the visible seams of Paolozzi's technique of dividing his model and reassembling the pieces, for example on the head.
The final full-size sculpture stands 12 feet (3.7 m) high, and is mounted on a high plinth.

A grand building at the corner of the High Street and George IV Bridge in central Edinburgh, Midlothian County Buildings is today an anachronism, the City of Edinburgh having been administratively carved off from its Midlothian hinterland in 1975.
This B-listed edifice was completed in 1905 by architect J. Macintyre Henry (1852 - 1929). Richly decorated pediments face north and west, supported on Ionic columns. On the rear elevation, facing St. Giles Kirk, is a notable frieze by W. Birnie Rhind (1853 - 1933), with reliefs representing the industries of Midlothian at the time
agriculture, fishing and mining. It has been criticised as a pastiche, 'weakly Classical' or 'flabby Palladian', but it acknowledges its historical surroundings which is more than could be said for its extension, built opposite in 1968 and connected by a tunnel running beneath George IV Bridge. This extension was by Sir Robert Matthew (1906-75) in his modern-vernacular style but has now thankfully been demolished.
After 1975 the building became the Lothian Regional Council Chambers but, after Lothian Region was dismantled in 1996, the building no longer had a purpose. It was taken on by Edinburgh City Council and, with the need for a temporary home for the new Scottish Parliament in 1999, it was pressed into use as office space and the visitor centre until 2004.
Inside there is a marble pilastered entrance hall, with a fine plasterwork ceiling. Beyond is grand stairway with a wrought-iron balustrade featuring winged ladies. On the first floor is a galleried and arcaded hall and the fine tunnel-vaulted council chamber, with walnut panelling and Corinthian pilasters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYJMN - By the late 1990s, Warrington RLFC's spiritual home Wilderspool Stadium had become decrepit and unfit for purpose, and so the club looked to move to a new stadium. Before settling on the site which had formerly housed the Tetley Walker brewery, a site in Burtonwood was considered but these plans were rejected.
The last competitive game at Wilderspool (after 105 years at the ground) was played on 21 September 2003, when Warrington beat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 52-12.
The stadium was notable for bucking the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium. There were originally 4 stands in the stadium the North Stand (reserved seating), the East Stand (originally unreserved seating but later became reserved seating), the South Stand (home terracing), and the West Stand (visitors' terracing and overflow of home terracing).
It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby.
The official capacity of the stadium is 15,200.
The stadium has already enjoyed several memorable moments, perhaps most notably Andrew Johns' debut for Warrington against Leeds Rhinos in a 33-16 victory on 10 September 2005.
During the Co-operative Championship grand final rugby league game between Featherstone Rovers and Halifax on 26 September 2010, a fire beneath the terraced West Stand broke out, forcing all of the fans housed in the stand to be evacuated onto the field, holding up the game for around 45 minutes. Following a safety inspection the spectators were eventually allowed back in. However, when the smell of smoke failed to disperse, there was a further hold up as the fans were moved to the East Stand. The game resumed with no further interruptions. The fire is being treated as arson.

Sunrise was a track from Lowlife, the third New Order album. Released in May 1985 by Factory Records, Low-Life is considered to be among New Order's strongest work, displaying the moment in which the band completed its transformation from post-punk hold-overs to dance rock pioneers. The album shows New Order's increased incorporation of synthesizers and samplers, while still preserving the rock aspects of their earlier work.
The album's artwork is the only New Order release to feature photographs of the band members on its cover. By default, drummer/keyboardist Stephen Morris is on the front cover, but it actually features four photographs inside the case and a semi-transparent piece of paper with the band's name on. Owners can choose which band member is seen through the sleeve.
The original Factory release (Japan and UK) CD versions of this album are mastered with pre-emphasis.
The album was preceded by the release of the full-length version of 'The Perfect Kiss' as a single (only an edited version appears on the album). John Robie's remix of 'Sub-culture' was also released as a 12' single. Both of these extended versions eventually were included on 1987's Substance.
Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a coal fired power station located in Cuerdley, Cheshire in North West England, which is capable of co-firing biomass. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington. Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy plc have operated the station.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines. rather than a sunrise, this is a sunset as locals will notice.

Waterloo Sunset is a song by British rock band The Kinks. It was released as a single in 1967, and featured on their album Something Else by The Kinks. Composed and produced by Kinks frontman Ray Davies, 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of the band's best known and most acclaimed songs. A London FM radio poll in 2004 named this the 'Greatest Song About London', while Time Out named it the 'Anthem of London'.
The lyrics describe a solitary narrator watching (or imagining) two lovers passing over a bridge, with the melancholic observer reflecting on the couple, the Thames, and Waterloo Station. The song was rumoured to have been inspired by the romance between two British celebrities of the time, actors Terence Stamp and Julie Christie. Ray Davies denied this in his autobiography, and claimed in a 2008 interview, 'It was a fantasy about my sister going off with her boyfriend to a new world and they were going to emigrate and go to another country.'
Despite its complex arrangement, the sessions for 'Waterloo Sunset' lasted a mere ten hours
Dave Davies later commented on the recording: 'We spent a lot of time trying to get a different guitar sound, to get a more unique feel for the record. In the end we used a tape-delay echo, but it sounded new because nobody had done it since the 1950s. I remember Steve Marriott of the Small Faces came up and asked me how we'd got that sound. We were almost trendy for a while.' The single was one of the group's biggest UK successes, reaching number two on Melody Maker's chart, and went on to become one of their most popular and best-known.
The record reached number 2 on the British charts in mid 1967 (it failed to dislodge the Tremeloes' 'Silence Is Golden' from the number 1 position). Davies considered the song a professional milestone, where he managed to blend the commercial demands of a hit single with his own highly personal style of narrative songwriting. The elaborate production was the first Kinks recording produced solely by Davies, without longtime producer Shel Talmy. In subsequent arguments with Kinks management over the direction of the band, Davies would say 'I've done 'Waterloo Sunset', now I want to do something else'.
In 2010 Ray Davies stated the song was originally entitled 'Liverpool Sunset'. In an interview with the Liverpool Echo he explained 'Liverpool is my favourite city, and the song was originally called Liverpool Sunset. I was inspired by Merseybeat. I'd fallen in love with Liverpool by that point. On every tour, that was the best reception. We played The Cavern, all those old places, and I couldn't get enough of it. I had a load of mates in bands up there, and that sound \u2013 not The Beatles but Merseybeat \u2013 that was unbelievable. It used to inspire me every time. So I wrote Liverpool Sunset. Later it got changed to Waterloo Sunset, but there's still that play on words with Waterloo. London was home, I'd grown up there, but I like to think I could be an adopted Scouser. My heart is definitely there.

The sap of Giant Hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters, long-lasting scars, and\u2014if it comes in contact with eyes\u2014blindness. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

This memorial is built at the site of the former Aignish Farm, the place of confrontation between the crofters and the landowners, to commemorate a phase of the highland land struggle.
The Aignish riot of 9 January 1888 was one of the most potentially disastrous confrontations of the period, especially running so soon after the Pairc deer raiders 'riot'. At the Aignish farm site a flag was unfurled to summon the people and an estimated 500 men had gathered in a short time, some with the intention of driving away all cattle and sheep from the farm.
Those animals which they did not succeed in driving into the sea they crippled by breaking their legs with clubs. Policemen and marines who arrived on the scene were pelted with stones and the raiders were only dispersed after being confronted at bayonet point by a detachment of the Royal Scots Regiment. The riot act was read out in English and Gaelic and by the end of the day 11 people were arrested and were imprisoned in nearby Stornoway. After the crowd had driven the sheep and cattle some distance they turned them back and past the farm
The iconic design reflects the idea of confrontation and takes the form of two stone structures of local stone approx 4.5 metres in height, each with a flat face from which jagged stones protrude. These pillars have curved backs and taper in towards the top. The jagged stones face each other, reflecting the aggression and tension of the event. In my opinion it is best seen at sunset or sunrise when, with a wind blowing you can hear the distant echo's of the crowd that day. It was a dark time for the Highlands and Islands and was to force more islanders to leave for ships west to the america.

The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. It is also sometimes incorrectly called Motherdie (especially in the UK), however Motherdie is actually a name for Crataegus monogyna. It is native to Europe, western Asia and northwestern Africa
in the south of its range in the Mediterranean region, it is limited to higher altitudes. It is related to other diverse members of Apiaceae such as parsley, carrot, hemlock and hogweed.
The hollow stem of Cow parsley grows to a height of between 60\u2013170 cm, branching to umbels of small white flowers. Flowering time is mid-spring to early summer, so its just about everywhere around me at the moment.
The tripinnate leaves are 15\u201330 cm long and have a triangular form. The leaflets are ovate and subdivided.
Cow Parsley grows in sunny to semi-shaded locations in meadows and at the edges of hedgerows and woodland. It is a particularly common sight by the roadside. It is sufficiently common and fast-growing to be considered a nuisance weed in gardens. Cow parsley's ability to grow rapidly through rhizomes and to produce large quantities of seeds in a single growing season has made it an invasive species in many areas.

Thinking about that theme, the National Trust (NT) have launched a light-hearted competition asking for contributions towards a Japanese-style 'renga' poem on teh subject of the spring blossom.
Renga is an art form going back centuries, where one poet writes a verse before passing their contribution on to another. Blossom, a popular obsession in Japan is a traditional subject matter.
The National Trust's 36 verse poem will plan to track the country's orchards as they blossom from south to north in the coming weeks. The first 12 started at the Mother Orchard on the Cotehole Estate near Saltash in Cornwall, an eight-acre orchard filled with 120 apple tree varieties as well as cherries, pears and plums.
The middle 12 will be composed with the help of the public over the following 14 days, as the trees blossom across the country.
Aspiring renga poets can submit their verses for consideration online at a special website, www.orchardnetwork.org.uk . The best will be picked for inclusion in the final poem bythe Trust's poetry experts. The final 12 verses will be written at Acorn Bank in Cumbria, mid May.
Good for families the events at Cotehele and Acorn Bank will include picnics under the trees, bug hunts, blossom walks and wildlife displays. A great many of Englands orchards have been lost over the last 50 years and hopefully, this will help revive interest in Adams Pearmain, Ashmead's Kernel, Beauty of Bath, Egremont Russet and Sufolks Sturmer Pippin.

Yes, those 'Jacks In The Green' (yep they are plural !) have been busy during that long unusually cold winter. The results of their quiet labour seem to have all burst out into bloom around us.
The Pussy willow (Salix Caprea) is native to our corner of Europe and bits of Asia. The flowers seen here along an old railway line, are soft silky, silvery 3-7 cm long catkins, produced in early spring before the new leaves appear. Its dioecious in that there are male and female catkins on different plants.
Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as 'pussies'. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.
The male catkins mature yellow at pollen release, the female catkins pale green. The fruit is a small capsule 5-10 mm long containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine cottony hairs. The seeds are very small (about 0.2 mm) with the fine hairs aiding dispersal. To germinate they require bare soil.
This plant was historically widely used as a browse for goats and that might be the origin of the other name for this shrub.

The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, access to the adjoining Bhs coffee shop and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.

Latchford is a suburban district and electoral ward of the unitary borough of Warrington, in Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.

An interesting (but pretty useless) piece of info that might benefit you one day in a pub quiz, Blackpool folk are called Sandgrown'uns.
Infra Red Film from Kodak (HIE) has been used here. This film used to have to be loaded, unloaded and developed in absolute darkness. Results could be rewarding though as this shot on a hot summers day shows. Blue sky becomes inky black, warm skin glows. Foliage comes up like snow.
