Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0N - A Scottish Soldier is a song written by Andy Stewart using the tune of The Green Hills of Tyrol, which was transcribed by John MacLeod during the Crimean War from La Tua Danza Sì Leggiera, a chorus part in the third act of Gioachino Rossini's 1829 opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell). The song is about a dying Scottish soldier, wishing to return to the hills of his homeland rather than die in the Tyrol. The song was one of two US chart entries by Andy Stewart. A Scottish Soldier reached no. 1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It spent 36 weeks in the UK Singles Chart in 1961.
This song was the entrance theme of professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper
Andrew Stewart MBE (30 December 1933 11 October 1993) was a Scottish singer and entertainer. He presented the BBC TV variety show The White Heather Club throughout the 1960s, and his song Donald Where's Your Troosers? was a hit in both 1960 and 1989. Internationally, the song most closely associated with Stewart is A Scottish Soldier.
Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933, the son of a teacher. When he was five years old, the family moved to Perth and then, six years later, to Arbroath.

The Harrogate Bus Company operates both local and regional bus services in North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, England. It is a subsidiary of Transdev Blazefield
In July 2016, the company was again rebranded, now operating as The Harrogate Bus Company. To coincide with this, a huge fleet upgrade was undertaken, which included the introduction of the current two-tone red livery, as well as a refurbishment of the company's route 1 branded single-deck Wright Eclipse Urban bodied Volvo B7RLE vehicles to set the new standard specification of free WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. Other Wright Eclipse Urban vehicles were transferred from some of Transdev's other subsidiaries to replace the older Wright Renown bodied Volvo B10BLE single-decker vehicles which were branded for the route. 2016 also saw the launch of 14 new high-specification Wright Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL double-deck vehicles on the route 36, replacing the older Wright Eclipse Gemini vehicles. The 36 also received its own new brand Riding Redefined as well as a new two-tone red and black livery. In July 2017, a new brand was introduced for the route 770/771, which saw the services become renumbered alongside the new brand name known as Superior 70/71. A fleet of Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE single-deck vehicles were transferred from Transdev's operations in Burnley and refurbished to equip them with WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. The new fleet entered service on the route on 23 July, eventually replacing the entire fleet of Volvo B10BLE Wright Renown vehicles, which then left the fleet in 2018. In April 2018, due to the loss of council funding for the 70 to Connexionsbuses, the 71 was again renumbered and rebranded, now known as Simple 7.

Less commonly, aircraft, railcars or vessels are also similarly fitted. These vehicles must be highly protected and may feature bars or wire mesh over the windows, bulletproof glass, segregated prisoner compartments, and additional seating for escorting officers.
Function
Due to their relatively low security and potential isolation from assistance while en route, police or additional corrections vehicles sometimes escort high-risk transports. With this in mind, vehicles may also be equipped with radio communications, global positioning units, additional restraints and weapons, and other emergency equipment. To add additional security, prisoners are typically restrained while in transport and may be physically secured to the vehicle, handcuffed while in the secured area, or a combination of both.
Prisoner transport vehicles may be operated by police services (see paddywagon), correctional services, field officers, court services, federal agencies such as the United States Marshals Service, or be contracted to private security companies. Prison buses were widely used in the late 1900s to transport prisoners, especially to state prisons across the US. They were usually quite secure and offered no way of escape for transporting prisoners.

OPENING an asylum centre at a Warrington hotel without consulting residents was 'simply not acceptable'.
Warrington South MP Andy Carter raised his concerns in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon during an urgent debate on the migrant crisis.
He was among a large number of MPs grilling immigration minister Robert Jenrick on the fall out of the problems at the Manston Migrant Centre in Kent.
Thousands of migrants have been placed in temporary accomodation since then to relieve the pressure Parliament was told.
Mr Carter said on Thursday he was notified by the Home Office that the Fir Grove hotel in his Warrington South constituency would 'become an asylum centre the following day' and said no talks were held with the council.
He added: It's in the middle of a residential area, less than 200 yards from a primary school.
I'm sure (Mr Jenrick) would agree with me that it's simply not acceptable for the Home Office to steamroll ahead on a decision like this without the necessary consultation with local residents.
After Conservative former minister Paul Maynard raised concerns about the use of a hotel in his Blackpool North and Cleveleys constituency, Mr Jenrick said: I appreciate that Blackpool is one of those areas that has borne a disproportionate burden from this issue for a long time.
So if there is a way we can ensure that individuals are dispersed from Blackpool more swiftly than other parts of the country, then I'd be happy to look into that.
Mr Jenrick added 'deterrence' has to be part of the UK's approach, suggesting good-quality hotels could act as a 'pull factor' for people thinking of crossing the Channel.
The population at the Manston Migrant Processing Centre is back below 1,600 with 'over 2,300 people being placed in onward accommodation', Mr Jenrick said.

Mr Carter yesterday held a number of meetings to understand the legal options available to Warrington Borough Council, which also opposes the decision.
He said: I held a number of meetings yesterday to understand the legal options available to the Council in terms of challenging decisions taken by the owners of the hotel and to gain more information from the Home Office and their plans for this site.
In discussions with Home Office officials, I have been advised that the cohort planned for accommodation this site will be families with children. Prior to arriving in Warrington the refugees will have been processed at centres elsewhere. The hotel has 54 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 79 guests in total.
The advice received from Kings Counsel was that an immediate legal challenge to this decision to use this site for Asylum Seekers would be unlikely to succeed, not least due the incredibly short timescales before the asylum seekers arrive in Warrington and the location of the owners of the site. Other local authorities are however pursuing legal routes related to planning legislation and a change of use requirements, which I am monitoring.

In his iconic song, Paul McCartney sang about the barbers where the Beatles used to get their hair cut in Liverpool. The barber shop, Bioletti's, like nearly all of the places referred to in the song, was not on Penny Lane itself but on Smithdown Place, overlooking the roundabout' with the bus shelter.
A change of ownership meant that Bioletti's became Tony Slavin's, but it is still a barber shop (and now also a ladies salon). Where else could you have your hair done at a reasonable price and share in Beatles history at the same time?
The Ladies salon (upstairs) used to be a flat in the Beatles' days, but the barber shop downstairs still looks much the same as when the Beatles used to sit and wait for a trim.
Beatles fans are always welcome either to have their hair done in the same place as the Beatles
.. or to stop and say hello. Visitors are welcome to look around, take photographs, and sit in the barbers' chairs. In return, donations for the Linda McCartney Centre are gratefully accepted. There are also some unique souvenirs available to buy.

The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the LennonMcCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the LennonMcCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. Fifty-Three is the atomic number of the useful halide iodine, also the racing number of Herbie, a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of his own, first appearing in the 1969 Walt Disney Film film, The Love Bug. For direct calls to Cuba, the code is +53.
The 53 bus is one that I often travelled on, getting me from Belle Vue, to my first job in Higher Openshaw, Manchester. Bernard Manning described the 53 as the longest bus route in the world, connecting 'Africa with Jerusalem'. That would be due to the route taking in Moss Side and finishing in Cheetham Hill and Prestwich, old home of Manchester's orthodox Jewish community.
Manning was born in the Ancoats district of Manchester, Lancashire. Often reviled as a racist comedian, he had Russian Jewish ancestry on his father's side, as well as roots in Ireland, and was brought up a 'strict Catholic'. He named his house in Alkrington, Greater Manchester, 'Shalom', the Hebrew word for 'peace.'
Manning owned the Embassy club in Harpurhey, Manchester and performed mostly there from the 1980's. I remember one Friday night there with a group from work, after a wormy salad at the Barnaby Rudge. Stiff Records is a British independent record label formed in London, England, by Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera). Originally active from 1976 to 1985, the label was reactivated in 2007.
Established at the outset of the punk rock boom, Stiff Records signed various punk and New Wave acts such as Nick Lowe, The Damned, Lene Lovich, Wreckless Eric, Plummet Airlines, Elvis Costello, and Ian Dury. The label's marketing and advertising was often provocative and witty billing itself as 'The World's Most Flexible Record Label'. Other slogans were 'We came. We saw. On the label of Stiff's sampler compilation Heroes &
