Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RK - Lilium GmbH is a German aerospace company which is the developer of the Lilium Jet, an electrically powered personal air vehicle capable of VTOL flight.
History
Lilium GmbH was founded in 2015 by four engineers and PhD students at the Technical University of Munich, Daniel Wiegand, Sebastian Born, Matthias Meiner and Patrick Nathen.
The Lilium Eagle, an unmanned two-seat proof of concept model, performed its maiden flight at the airfield Mindelheim-Mattsies near Munich in Germany on 20 April 2017. The Lilium Jet five-seater prototype Phoenix first flew in May 2019. The prototype was powered by 36 electrically-powered jacketed-propellers mounted in movable flaps that can point down for vertical takeoff and gradually moved to a horizontal position to provide forward thrust. The five-seat Lilium Jet is capable of achieving a top speed of 300km/h and targets a range of 300 km
In January 2020 Aerokurier published a report which stated that Lilium could not meet its stated aircraft performance goals and would only be able to fly for two minutes at a time. The anonymously-authored report was dismissed by the company but later backed up by four German aerospace academics who wrote that Lilium was using brilliant PR to create an illusory world to attract investors.
In February 2021, Forbes published an article citing a number of former employees that stated the development of Lilium's aircraft was dogged by problems and that the flight test campaign made minimal progress

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JB5 - drawing frames (sometimes called draw frames) with sliver cans, as used in Lancashire cotton spinning mills in the late-19th and early-20th century.
What you're seeing
The thick, soft cotton strands looping down into the containers are sliver.
The tall cylindrical containers are sliver cans, used to store and transport the fibre between processes.
Above the cans is the drawing frame, with a line of drafting rollers that pull multiple slivers together and stretch them to improve uniformity.
What the drawing frame did
The drawing frame sat between carding and spinning and had three main jobs:
Combine several carded slivers into one
Draft (stretch) the fibres to make them finer
Straighten and equalise fibre alignment
The output was a smoother, more even sliver ready for:
further drawing stages, or
the roving (speed) frame, and then spinning
How to tell it's not a roving frame
This is a common point of confusion:
Drawing frame: sliver goes into cans (as shown here)
Roving (speed) frame: fibres are twisted and wound onto bobbin spindles, not cans
Because there is no twist and the material is collected loosely in cans, this is clearly a drawing frame.
Why this is classic Lancashire
Drawing frames were standard in mills across Oldham, Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley and Preston
Lancashire mills often used multiple drawing passages to achieve consistency at scale
Uniform sliver was essential for high-speed spinning on mules or ring frames
In short
This image shows cotton drawing frames feeding sliver into cans, a crucial intermediate stage in Lancashire's spinning process, responsible for fibre consistency, quality and productivity. This image shows a row of cotton drawing frames with sliver cans inside a Lancashire spinning mill, illustrating a key intermediate stage in the cotton manufacturing process. Drawing frames were used after carding to improve the uniformity, alignment and consistency of cotton fibres before they were spun into yarn.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHBP - This image shows a bright red city flag flying in the foreground against a clear blue sky, with Mainz Cathedral (Dom St. Martin) rising prominently behind it in the historic city centre of Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The flag features the emblem of Mainz, a white wheel symbol historically associated with the city and its ecclesiastical heritage, creating a strong visual link between civic identity and architectural history.
Mainz Cathedral is one of Germany's most important Romanesque religious buildings, with origins dating back to the tenth century. Dedicated to St Martin of Tours, the cathedral has played a central role in the political and religious life of the city for over a millennium. Its distinctive sandstone tower dominates the skyline of Mainz's old town and remains a defining landmark for residents and visitors alike.
The photograph captures the atmosphere of a sunny day in a historic European city, combining civic symbolism, medieval architecture, and urban streetscape. It reflects themes of heritage, tourism, local identity, and cultural continuity. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to German cities, travel and tourism, historic architecture, civic symbols, European culture, and urban heritage in Germany.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J86 - This image shows a branded charity van operated by Street Hearts BG, a UK-based animal welfare organisation focused on dog neutering, rescue, and population control. The vehicle prominently displays the charity's name, logo, and mission statement, along with notices indicating that live animals may be in transit.
Street Hearts BG works to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs through neutering programmes and rescue activities, often operating across borders and in partnership with other animal welfare groups. Vehicles like this are essential to the charity's work, enabling the safe transport of animals to veterinary facilities, foster homes, or rescue centres.
The van's clear signage, social media links, and safety notices highlight the professionalisation of modern charitable operations and the importance of public visibility in fundraising and awareness-raising. Parked on a quiet residential street, the vehicle situates animal welfare work within everyday community settings rather than remote or specialist locations.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering animal welfare, UK charities, rescue logistics, responsible pet ownership, volunteering, and the practical realities of non-profit operations focused on protecting animals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJPC - Seiko Holdings Corporation (セイコーホールディングス株式会社, Seikō Hōrudingusu Kabushiki-gaisha), commonly known as Seiko (/ˈseɪkoʊ/ SAY-koh, Japanese: [seːkoː]), is a Japanese maker of watches, clocks, electronic devices, semiconductors, jewelries, and optical products. Founded in 1881, it is known for introducing one of the world's first quartz wrist watches as well as the world's first quartz watch with a chronograph complication
Military watches produced for issue to or use by Japanese troops were manufactured by Seikosha, which by 1938 was capable of churning out 1.2 million timepieces per year. Due to its size and power, the company appears to have been the sole Japanese watch manufacturer with dedicated military contracts for wristwatch production during the war, though the scarcity of raw materials meant that much of the firm's production was likely relegated to on-board instruments for aircraft, ships, etc
In 1956, Seiko launched the Marvel, the first wristwatch to be designed and manufactured entirely in-house
In 1960, Seiko released the Grand Seiko, which aimed to be the most accurate wristwatch in the world
Seiko released the first chronograph watch in Japan in 1964 and the first diver's watch in Japan in 1965

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPG1 - A craft brewery or microbrewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and is often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The microbrewing movement began in both the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, although traditional artisanal brewing existed in Europe for centuries and subsequently spread to other countries. As the movement grew, and some breweries expanded their production and distribution, the more encompassing concept of craft brewing emerged. A brewpub is a pub that brews its own beer for sale on the premises
The term microbrewery originated in the UK in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries that focused on producing traditional cask ale independently of major brewers or pub chains. In 1972, Martin Sykes established Selby Brewery as the first new independent brewing company for 50 years
Some British brewpubs specialize in ale, while others brew continental lagers and wheat beers. The Ministry of Ales, Burnley
The Masons Arms in Headington, Oxford
The Brunswick Inn, Derby (in 2010, half of the beers sold by the establishment were brewed on-site)
The Watermill pub, Ings Cumbria
and the Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds are some examples of small independent brewpubs in the UK.
The city of Bristol was identified by The Guardian in May 2014 as an area where the microbrewery industry had flourished. Ten brewpubs, such as Zerodegrees, The Tobacco Factory, Copper Jacks Crafthouse and The Urban Standard, were identified as thriving Bristol craft beer establishments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDY30A - In the United States and Canada, timber-frame construction has been revived since the 1970s and is now experiencing a thriving renaissance of the ancient skills. This is largely due to such practitioners as Steve Chappell, Jack Sobon, and Tedd Benson, who studied old plans and techniques and revived a long-neglected technique. Once a handcrafted skill passed down, timber-frame construction has now been modernized with the help of modern industrial tools such as the CNC machines. These machines and mass-production techniques have assisted growth and made for more affordable frames and shorter lead-times for projects.
Timber-framed structures differ from conventional wood-framed buildings in several ways. Timber framing uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly timbers in the range of 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12), while common wood framing uses many more timbers with dimensions usually in the 5 to 25 cm (2 to 10) range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ. In conventional framing, the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners, whereas timber framing uses the traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints that are usually fastened using only wooden pegs.[13] Modern complex structures and timber trusses often incorporate steel joinery such as gusset plates, for both structural and architectural purposes.
Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

This is a track I remember from the tail end of the Madchester period. A good one to be uplifted from a grey wet Manchester afternoon!
Deee-Lite you may remember was an American house and club/dance group, formed in New York City, United States. The group's best-known single was 'Groove Is in the Heart', from their 1990 debut album, World Clique.
The members of Deee-lite were Super DJ Dmitri (Dmitry Brill), Lady Miss Kier,
Towa Tei (Dong-hwa Chung) &
DJ Ani.
The tune 'Groove is In the Heart' featured lyrics from Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, and bass guitar and vocals by Bootsy Collins.
