During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Once, it seemed like a good idea to live in the Pennines and commute by train. Susannah Simmons, a violinist at Opera North, moved to Marsden for quick and easy access to her work in Leeds and Manchester. The service was far from perfect but satisfactory, she says. But for at least the past year nearly all trains I would have used have been cancelled or delayed, forcing me to drive everywhere.
Like countless others, her life has been upended by ripped-up schedules and woeful performance of TransPennine Express.
Ministers are expected to announce this week whether the operator will be replaced or awarded a fresh deal ? potentially for up to eight years.
Expectations are that TPE, owned by London-listed First Group ? the only remaining British transport firm operating passenger trains on the UK's privatised railway - will be given another chance to turn operations around, with a short extension of six to 12 months when its contract expires on 28 May.
But train failures are a potent political issue in the north. The announcement was withheld until after the local elections and the results of last week's vote ? and the potential for further backlash in red wall seats ? have given ministers further pause before renewing First's contract, according to a source close to the process.
MPs and mayors across the north have urged the government to get a grip after the operator's abysmal record of delayed, disrupted and cancelled services ? whose true extent was only officially confirmed after the regulator warned firms against concealing last-minute schedule changes.

It is owned by DfT OLR Holdings for the Department for Transport (DfT), after the previous operator Arriva Rail North had its franchise terminated at the end of February 2020.
Northern Trains commenced operating the Northern franchise on 1 March 2020, taking over from Arriva Rail North. The prior operator had its franchise terminated early by the DfT in January 2020 amid widespread dissatisfaction over its performance, particularly in respect to poorly-implemented timetable changes. The DfT had opted to hand the operation of the franchise over to the operator of last resort. At the commencement of operations, Northern Trains publicly stated that its immediate aims were to improve service reliability and to proceed with the introduction of new rolling stock. For the latter, both the Class 195 diesel multiple units and Class 331 electric multiple units were brought into service fully during December 2020.

The building is prominent and elegant, but essentially rudimentary.
At seven storeys the building is much taller, and also wider, than its more established Victorian neighbours, but it shares the same civic intentions. Brickwork layers alternate between dark red piers abutted to windows and solid strips in light brown. Looming overcast skies or blazing sunshine dependent, the brickworks tonal contrast is more often than not more discrete and registered only subconsciously, but it lends the facade a richness that may not otherwise have been found in its laconic expression. Windows stack perfectly and vary between five and three bays to the three ?street-facing' elevations, whilst smaller, more economic openings are employed to the bedrooms and bathrooms at the back.

It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.

Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

However the exact origin of the Eagles has long been a mystery, it is claimed that they were originally cast at the Horseley Ironworks in Tipton, Staffordshire as part of Robert Stephenson's Dee Bridge in Roodee, Chester on the Chester to Holyhead Railway.
This claim is further supported by the faint outline of the letter ?H' inside the ?C' on the crest below each Eagle which is believed to stand for Holyhead. On 24 May 1847, the carriages of a local passenger train to Ruabon, fell through the Dee Bridge into the river below, tragically killing five people
The Eagles are mentioned multiple times in the report of the Coroner's inquest into the bridge failure, following the incident, the bridge was repaired and strengthened and eventually replaced in 1871. The recovered scrap metal which included the Eagles was sent to Crewe Works so that it could be recycled.
It is believed that Francis Webb spotted the Eagles amongst the scrap on Stone Yard Bank near Flag Lane and had them rescued. They were then mounted on a bridge across the Crewe to Chester Line which was used to move rail vehicles in and out off Crewe Works, this would become known as the Eagle Bridge.
During the 1980s the demand for the repair of locomotives at Crewe started to decline, until eventually, the Eagle Bridge became too costly to maintain. The Eagles were removed from the bridge with one being mounted at the then entrance to Crewe Works on West Street.
The other three Eagles were placed into storage within the works, that is until 1987 when two of the Eagles were moved here to the Heritage Centre where they can still be seen today.
The Eagles now perch impressively as they watch over three different locations within the town. Two of the Eagles are located at the Heritage Centre, the first can be seen at the entrance to the museum

It is in the London station group, one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom and the southern terminus of the East Coast Main Line to North East England and Scotland. The station was opened in Kings Cross in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway on the northern edge of Central London to accommodate the East Coast Main Line. It came under the ownership of the London and North Eastern Railway as part of the Big Four grouping in 1923, who introduced famous services such as the Flying Scotsman and locomotives such as Mallard. other long-distance operators include Hull Trains and Grand Central. In addition, Great Northern runs suburban commuter trains in and around north London.
In the late 20th century, the area around the station became known for its seedy and downmarket character, and was used as a backdrop for several films as a result. the Cross Country Route and the Trent Valley section of the West Coast Main Line (WCML). It has four platforms: Two low-level platforms (1 and 2) on the WCML, and, at a right-angle to, and passing over these, are two high-level platforms (3 and 4) served by the Cross Country Route. Historically there were chords connecting the two lines, but there is no longer any rail connection between them.
The original station was opened on 12 August 1839[1] by the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway, a forerunner of the Midland Railway, on its original route from Derby to Hampton-in-Arden meeting the London and Birmingham Railway for London. Later, in 1842, the B&DJ built a branch to Birmingham, terminating at Lawley Street railway station.

On 26 June 1847 the London and North Western Railway opened its Trent Valley Line passing at a right angle beneath the original Birmingham and Derby line with a new joint station designed by John William Livock.
The joint station did not acquire the High Level and Low Level names until 1924. Since it was expected that only local trains would call, the low level platforms were on loops, with the running lines left clear for expresses. At that time there was a north to west curve linking the, by then, Midland Railway line with the LNWR line. This curve was opened in 1847, and closed in March 1969

Operations
The head office is in Castle Hill at Maidenhead in Berkshire, and the works are located in Ketton in Rutland, Buckley in Flintshire, Clitheroe and Avonmouth near Bristol. The company has a marine terminal at Avonmouth that is used for the importation of cement in bulk, with samples from there tested at the Ketton site's laboratory each week to ensure they meet British Standards. Cement is also imported through the Humber ports.
Hanson Cement holds an open day at the Ketton production facility every year in July.

The line used to continue to Manchester but due to structural damage on a bridge over the Ship Canal, it was truncated at Latchford Sidings in the 1980s, just past Arpley Junction to the east.
The main freight passing beneath Warrington station are coal trains to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. These follow a complex route from Liverpool Docks. Most workings reverse at Edge Hill, before proceeding via Rainhill and Earlestown and through Bank Quay station. They then run round in Arpley Yards, before passing Arpley Junction to Latchford Sidings. They then run round again to pass Arpley once more to head to Fiddlers Ferry. Occasionally they can be routed via Widnes to Liverpool instead of via the reverse of the above route, which will entail them exiting Fiddlers Ferry, passing Arpley Junction to Latchford, running round and heading back past Arpley and Fiddlers Ferry to Speke. Generally a train will take 30-40 minutes between passing through Bank Quay on the main line to heading under the station to Fiddlers Ferry. They will take about 90-120 minutes then to return. There are usually about 3 trains operating this circuit, but are dependant on a ship arriving at Liverpool Bulk Terminal.
Other freight trains also use Latchford Sidings to reverse when Arpley Yard is busy.

The first signalmen, originally called Railway Policemen (leading to the nickname of 'Bobby'), were employed in the early 19th century and used flags to communicate with each other and train drivers, and hourglasses for the purpose of Time Interval Working between stations.
Additional duties
It was a signalman's duty to check each train that passed their signal box, looking for the red tail lamp exhibited on the trailing vehicle, the sighting of which confirmed that the train was still complete, and thus the section was clear.
Each train movement was logged, by hand, in a Train Register Book, and it was normal practice to provide a special desk to support this sizeable book. As well as train movements, every communication between signalmen and adjacent signal boxes via bell codes (when accepting trains or dealing with a token) was logged.
Technological advances including mechanical fixed signals in the 1840s, the electric telegraph and block working in the 1850s, and proper mechanical interlocking from 1856, allowed safer, more expeditious train working, and more complicated track layouts to be controlled single-handedly. The advent of such technological advances gradually led to the provision of an enclosed workspace known as a signal box, signal cabin or interlocking tower.
The principles of British-style railway signalling have changed little since the Victorian era and early 20th century. Modern technology has generally reduced the labour required per train movement. In many cases, a switch, button or computer command is used to alter the lie of points and control signals. Although many classic mechanical signal boxes remain in use, these are gradually being replaced by modern power signalling systems on most railways. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAD - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.

It had a chip pan, baby belling and all mod cons. I even remember the incumbent signalman holding a train for ten minutes while we finished our chips!
This is a panoramic shot of the Exeter West signal box, which is now located in original form at Crewe Heritage Centre, formerly the Crewe Railway Age. What's it doing here? you may reasonably ask.
Signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985. this was part of the old GWR area (Great Western Railway or Gods Wonderful Railway as it can occasionally still be referred). It would have been demolished but for a group of enthusiasts who carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were. It indeed works virtually every weekend, trained 'signalmen' are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.
Exeter West signalbox was built by the Great Western Railway in 1913. It was located at the west end of St. Davids station, controlling the junction for the London &
South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the Goods Lines avoiding the station, the engine sheds and various yards. The previous box was not spacious enough to accommodate the greater layout following enlargement of the station. The lengthy new signalbox contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers.
The signal box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electronically from a new box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of the box, the Exeter West Group moved in and carefully dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference. The first task was to safely remove all furniture, then dismantle the massive lever frame. all pieces were numbered and after two floundered attempts to site the box in Bristol and Swindon, Crewe found space for it.
The 131-lever frame was rebuilt lever by lever, and the interlocking painstakingly reinstated, and was completed during August 1992. The instrument shelf and the signalling equipment was then added. The box was formally opened to the public on May Day Monday 1993.
With the box once more restored to its proper condition, a start was made on rigging up equipment to simulate activity as it would have been when the box was operational. Most of the levers have been weighted to simulate real operation, although some are actually connected to real signals erected around the site.
An electronic simulator has been provided, and the job working the simulator can be harder than working the box itself, for the operator has to act as signalman at all the adjacent boxes, make telephone calls representing local staff, and work the track circuit lights to emulate the passage of trains.
The box can be worked to the full summer timetable of the 1960's, although generally the box is demonstrated to visitors with a very limited timetable to allow movements and actions to be explained. However once a year, on May Day weekend, members of the Group occasionally simulate a full timetable for a 54-hour continuous period. At its busiest, this requires four staff in the box (just as it used to be) and two further operators controlling the simulator.
If you were wondering, black levers are for points, blue locking points red for signals and black/white for detonators.
Whether you find trains and railways fascinating or not, this is a really interesting place. a bit of a trip back in time at least 25 years to a more manual age. Oh and if you were wondering, they do have a baby Belling, which would be capable of doing chips!

Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world\u2019s more interesting when it\u2019s diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

The station served the village of Willaston. It may be presumed that it was named Hadlow Road to distinguish it from the pre-existing Cheshire station at the other Cheshire village of Willaston, and so named, on the GWR/LNWR joint line between Crewe and Nantwich.
Hadlow Road railway station closed to passengers on 17 September 1956. The track continued to be used for freight transportation and driver training for another six years, closing on 7 May 1962. The tracks were lifted two years later.
The route became the Wirral Way footpath and part of Wirral Country Park in 1973, which was the first such designated site in Britain. All of the station (excluding the westbound platform) has been preserved to give an authentic 1950s look and a short section of track has been relaid in front of the eastbound platform.
The station is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is one of two visitor centres on the Wirral Way, with the other at Thurstaston where the platforms remain in situ, but the station has not been restored.

Built in the 1930's, Downs Court is a strapping Art Moderne reinterpretation of London's brick-built mansion blocks, springboarding from the more traditional, economic gallery-access social housing model as used in the Pembury Estate adjacent. The building is prominent and elegant, but essentially rudimentary.
At seven storeys the building is much taller, and also wider, than its more established Victorian neighbours, but it shares the same civic intentions. Brickwork layers alternate between dark red piers abutted to windows and solid strips in light brown. Looming overcast skies or blazing sunshine dependent, the brickworks tonal contrast is more often than not more discrete and registered only subconsciously, but it lends the facade a richness that may not otherwise have been found in its laconic expression. Windows stack perfectly and vary between five and three bays to the three ?street-facing' elevations, whilst smaller, more economic openings are employed to the bedrooms and bathrooms at the back.

the site was the location of the 'Old Works' which was demolished in the early 1980s.
History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.
Advanced Passenger Train
APT No.370 003/006 at Crewe Heritage Centre
Built by British Rail (BR) the 1970s and 1980s, this Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (APT) is the only surviving APT set. Numbered 370 003/006, it is open at all times with an occasional cafe run from the original buffet car (selected days only). The APT-P museum can be found inside one of the carriages, with photographs on display from the APT project

The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

Exeter West signal box is not at Exeter - it is at Crewe.
Why is this? Because a group of dedicated individuals saved the signalbox from demolition when the signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985, and carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were.
This box is now viewable at Crewe as part of Crewe Heritage Centre display, and signalmen are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.
