It was opened in 1847 by the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe & West Yorkshire Railway, which was subsequently taken over by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway twelve years later. It is now served by Northern Trains services on the Ribble Valley Line from Rochdale/Manchester Victoria to Blackburn and into Clitheroe.
Darwen is set amongst the hills of East Lancashire. Arriving from or departing towards Bolton involves journeying through the long Sough Tunnel, some 2,015 yd (1,843 m) in length.
The station has two platforms. It is one of only two passing points on the otherwise single track Blackburn to Bolton part of the route, but trains normally cross here only in the morning and evening peak periods. The loop was extended in length by a mile (1.6 km) either side of the station during a six-week-long engineering blockade in July & August 2015 to increase capacity on the line and eventually allow a half-hourly service to operate (as specified in the new Northern franchise agreement, due to come into effect in April 2016).
The station is currently unstaffed, with waiting shelters on each platform
step-free access is available to both. Ticket machines are available, along with a long-line P.A system and passenger information screens to convey train running information.

Flatus is brought to the rectum and pressurized by muscles in the intestines. It is normal to pass flatus (to fart), though volume and frequency vary greatly among individuals. The noise commonly associated with flatulence is produced by the anus and buttocks, which act together in a manner similar to that of an embouchure. PSTN Network Switch Off In 2025
The first stage Openreach propose to facilitate the retirement of their public switched telephone network (PSTN) is to issue 'Stop Sell' dates for specific telephone exchanges. Once a 'Stop Sell' date has passed, communication providers (CP's) will be unable to order any copper based products if a fibre solution is available at the customer's premises. Accepted fibre solutions include FTTP and SOGEA/SOGFast.
Impacted product and services that will be unavailable beyond a 'Stop Sell' date include WLR3 analogue, ISDN 2, ISDN 30, LLU SMPF, SLU SMPF, Narrowband Line Share and Classic products.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RMMPBY - Following the UK's Spring Budget announcement on 15th March 2023, the drinks and hospitality industry are preparing for the upcoming changes to alcohol duty which will take effect on 1st August 2023. Draught products will receive additional relief, while duty on other alcohol products is set to rise in line with inflation.
According to WSTA, the forecast inflation rate of 10.1% is being used as the measure for increasing duty rates on all non-draught products, but will be adjusted according to alcohol content. In simple terms, the higher the alcohol per volume (ABV), the higher the new duty rate will be.
Duty changes in line with ABV
While some products have previously been measured on volume only such as still wine and cider from 1st August all alcohol products will be measured by alcohol volume or ABV.
What does this mean for beer?
Draught beer and cider products are protected by a 9.2% discount offered on items in 20ltr containers that are less than 8.5% and use a dispense system, meaning that, for example, the duty on a 50ltr 4% lager will not change.
However, the standard rate of duty on packaged beer that is 3.5% ABV and above will rise by 10.1%. This will increase the price of a 24 pack of 330ml 4.5% lager by £0.69p per case.
What does this mean for wine?
Most wine will see an increase of £0.44 per 75cl bottle, or a 20% increase in the duty paid (£2.67 vs the current £2.23). This increase will apply to wines with an ABV between 11.5% and 14.5%.
Wines with an ABV above 15% will see a duty increase of £0.97 (+44%) per 75cl bottle, and this increase gets bigger the higher the alcohol percentage duty on fortified wines of +20% ABV will go up by £1.30 to £4.28 per 75cl bottle.
On the other hand, wine under 11.5% ABV will be treated more favourably. Duty on wine at 10% ABV, for example, will be £0.09 less than the current rate (at £2.14 per 75cl bottle).

Eggcup stops surplus food from going to waste and gets it to people instead. Our low-cost, weekly food scheme helps our members to save money on food, and that makes life more affordable for those in our community on a tight budget.
We have two Community Food Outlets for our members, one in Lancaster and one in the West End of Morecambe. We have a professional 5* food warehouse at our Lancaster base.
Most of the work in our warehouse and outlets is done by volunteers who want to contribute to building a stronger community and making good use of surplus food.
Some of our volunteers are members we're all pulling together! We also run a low-cost Buying Cooperative, where we pool our collective buying power to get great discounts. The Buying Cooperative is for Eggcup members and for other community food organisations across the district.

Senior officers rebuff claims police focusing on woke' causes and highlight disconnected approach over the last 12 years'
Cuts under Conservative-led governments have had a negative effect upon policing, the organisation representing senior officers has said, in a rebuff to claims that forces are focusing on woke causes.
The National Police Chiefs Council said in a statement that crime detection and charge rates had dropped following austerity measures and a fall in police numbers since 2010.
It comes after a report by the right-leaning thinktank Policy Exchange, which said on Tuesday that public confidence could be damaged if police showed solidarity against discrimination or expressed political views.
A National Police Chiefs Council spokesperson said: Detection and charge rates for a range of crimes have fallen over the past five years.
This has been impacted by austerity and the loss of thousands of police officers and staff, increasing complexity of policing and crime, growing demand related to mental ill health and impact of backlogs in the court system.
The NPCC's statement followed Monday's release of the Policy Exchange paper entitled Crime & Policing: What Do We want from the Next Prime Minister?
Written by the former Met detective chief inspector David Spencer, the 31-page report questioned whether officers should take part in acts that may be seen as political, such as taking the knee during protests.
Even the perception that an officer's decision-making, such as whether to arrest someone, might be influenced by a partisan political view has the potential to be hugely damaging to public confidence

It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.

Greasy chicken bones litter the streets like cigarette butts in a borough caught by Kentucky fried fever. Abdal Khan, of Chicken and Pizza' on Amhurst Road, dubbed Hackney the chicken capital of the world and it's hard to see otherwise.
The growing abundance of fried food shops is underlined by the fact that there are now more than two for each secondary school in the borough.
The shops centre on Stoke Newington and other districts with the right demographics. These are targeted operations not just random start ups.
Residents should be careful though when ordering their wings, many chicken shops have a poor food rating. Dixy Chicken' in Hackney Central, one of the 20 takeaways listed on the database, has a paltry one out of five star rating, indicating that the establishment is failing to comply fully with Britain's food hygiene laws.
A 25-year-old Hackney fried chicken shop worker of five years, spoke of the industry's bad practice.
After cooking a piece of battered chicken, you can only serve it within an hour, but staff leave it on a low heat all day, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, he said.
They do it to cut costs and get the most out of their stock.
It should be noted that the problem is not limited to chicken shops. There are around 160 fried food takeaways in the area, which equals eight per square kilometre. With this concentration, residents are never more than a 10 minute walk away from a deep-fried treat. A chicken and chips meal will set you back £1, making it a clucking good deal.

In 1824, Thomas Usher and his wife Hannah acquired a small brewery in Back Street, Trowbridge, renaming it Usher's Wiltshire Brewery. In 1844, the couple's three sons joined the partnership, allowing the parents to retire in 1869. After this, the beers and brand developed a loyal following, facilitating a quick expansion of the company through the 19th century. In 1887, the partnership took over Fanshaw & Palmer of Donnington, Berkshire. This resulted in the registration in 1889 of Usher's Wiltshire Brewery Ltd to combine the two organisations. From its date of formation until the Second World War, the company acquired some fifteen independent breweries and their associated public house premises.

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 a subtype of influenza type A is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

The building was damaged on 15 June 1996 when an IRA bomb exploded in Corporation Street less than 50 yards away. The refurbished theatre re-opened on 30 November 1998 by Prince Edward. Designed to create stand out' on the bar, the fonts are currently being rolled out to selected pubs and bars across Scotland.
Eleven regions Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Fife, Stirling, Ayrshire, Shetland, Orkney and Inverness are represented along with a general Scotland design for outlets outwith the selected regions.
Each of the fonts, created by design agency D8, features landmarks and references from the region it represents, such as Edinburgh's Calton Hill, the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, Aberdeen's Dunnottar Castle, Deep Sea World in Fife, Orkney's Viking longship, shinty in Inverness and Perth's Tay Bridge.
Alan Hay, on-trade sales director at Tennent's, said 250 fonts of each design will be rolled out this summer.
Supporting our customers will always be our priority, and following the success of our customisable founts, we are now rolling out fount designs for specific regions of Scotland, he said.
No other brand knows the Scottish on-trade like we do and we're sure the cultural references on each fount will create a real talking point amongst pub-goers
we can't wait to see how they look in bars around the country.
We want our drinkers to have a quality experience when enjoying a pint of Tennent's, and that starts with how our fount looks on the bar.
The roll out of the limited edition fonts comes after Tennent's extended its partnership with Scottish Rugby in a seven-figure deal.
Under the new agreement, Tennent's will continue its relationship with the Scotland national team and the country's two professional sides: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, alongside the additional title sponsorship of the Scottish domestic leagues.
The brewer will additionally take on the naming rights of the Premiership and National leagues, with the newly-formed Scottish Championship to follow in 2019/2020.

Harrison designed the exchange in the Classical style. It had two storeys above a basement and was constructed in Runcorn stone. The cost, £20,000, was paid for in advance by 400 members who bought £50 shares and paid £30 each to buy the site. The semi-circular north façade had fluted Doric columns. The exchange room where business was conducted covered 812 square yards. The ground floor also contained the members' library with more than 15,000 books. The basement housed a newsroom lit by a dome and plate-glass windows, its ceiling was supported by a circle of Ionic pillars spaced 15 feet from the walls. The first-floor dining-room was accessed by a geometrical staircase. The exchange opened to celebrate of the birthday of George III in 1809. It also contained other anterooms and offices.
As the cotton trade continued to expand, larger premises were required and its extension was completed in 1849. The Exchange was run by a committee of notable Manchester industrialists. From 1855 to 1860 the committee was chaired by Edmund Buckley.
The second exchange was replaced by a third designed by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England. The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. Situated in the south-central Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the airport ceased operating in 2008 amid controversy, leaving Tegel and Schönefeld as the two main airports serving the city for another twelve years until both were replaced by Berlin Brandenburg Airport in 2020.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Reich Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began an enormous reconstruction in the mid-1930s. While it was occasionally cited as the world's oldest operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and is no longer an issue since its closure.
Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World War II airports, the others being London's now defunct Croydon Airport and the old ParisLe Bourget Airport. It acquired a further iconic status as the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 194849. One of the airport's most distinctive features is its huge, canopy-style roof extending over the apron, able to accommodate most contemporary airliners in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the twenty largest buildings on earth, but it also formerly contained the world's smallest duty-free shop.
Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure. A non-binding referendum was held on 27 April 2008 against the impending closure but failed due to low voter turnout. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as Tempelhofer Feld. In September 2015, it was announced that Tempelhof would also become an emergency refugee camp.

CSIs are not police officers, they are support staff: civilians who are employed by police forces.
A Police CSI unit provides cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
CSIs are trained to identify, record and recover forensic evidence from all types of crime, ranging from criminal damage, burglary and vehicle crime (known as volume crime) to more serious crime types including arson and murder.
However, a CSI could be asked to attend almost any incident where the potential for forensic evidence has been identified. Unlike CSI Miami CSIs in Cheshire do not analyse evidence themselves or arrest criminals!
CSIs use a wide variety of techniques and equipment to recover forensic evidence. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GT15 - Warstone Lane Cemetery, (grid reference SP059877), also called Brookfields Cemetery, Church of England Cemetery, or Mint Cemetery (from the adjacent Birmingham Mint), is a cemetery dating from 1847 in Birmingham, England. It is one of two cemeteries in the city's Jewellery Quarter, in Hockley (the other being Key Hill Cemetery). It is no longer open to new burials.
A major feature is the two tiers of catacombs, whose unhealthy vapours led to the Birmingham Cemeteries Act which required that non-interred coffins should be sealed with lead or pitch.
The foundation stone for the chapel (demolished 1954) was laid on 6 April 1847. The blue brick gate lodge building, designed by J. R. Hamilton and J. M. Medland and built in 18478, survives, and is a Grade II listed building. The cemetery is itself Grade II on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The cemetery was originally reserved for members of the established Church of England, whereas Key Hill (opened in 1836) was non-denominational, and was therefore favoured by nonconformists.
On the night of 11 December 1940, all but the tower and classical west portico of St Thomas' Church, Bath Row, was destroyed by German bombs. The church was not rebuilt. The grounds were laid out for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 when the gravestones were removed and the dead reinterred at Warstone Lane Cemetery. The gardens were re-designed as the St. Thomas's Peace Garden in 1995 in commermoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
A comprehensive list of memorial inscriptions is being prepared by The Jewellery Quarter Research Group, to be published on its website.
A campaign group, The Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemeteries, seeks to preserve and protect the cemetery.

It is the terminus of the South Eastern Main Line to Dover via Ashford. All trains are operated by Southeastern, which provides the majority of commuter and regional services to south-east London and Kent. It is connected to Charing Cross Underground station and is near to Embankment Underground station and Embankment Pier.
The station was originally opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1864. It takes its name from its proximity to the road junction Charing Cross, the notional centre of London from which distances from the city are measured. During the 19th century the station became the main London terminus for continental traffic via boat trains, and served several prestigious international services. It was badly damaged by a roof collapse in 1905 and extensively rebuilt, subsequently becoming an important meeting point for military and government traffic during World War I. Accident circumstances
Headed by a LMS Class 5 4-6-0 steam locomotive No 45274, the 12:15 York to Bristol express, consisting of ten carriages, approached Sutton Coldfield railway station at about 55-60 mph (88-96 km/h) twice the permitted speed of 30 mph. When it reached the sharp curve immediately before the station, the train derailed, colliding with the platforms.
The carriages, engine, and station buildings were severely damaged. The first carriage was crushed between the engine and the second carriage. The fourth carriage was knocked into the air causing it to drag along the station roof, damaging both the roof and the platforms to either side. Seventeen people, including the train crew, were killed and 25 injured.
The train had been diverted away from its usual route into Birmingham via Tamworth because of engineering work. The regular driver did not know the diversionary route via Sutton Coldfield, so another driver, fully conversant with it, had joined him at Burton-on-Trent to 'conduct' him over this section. However, the regular driver, complaining that the rough riding of the engine was tiring him, left the footplate and took a seat in the train, leaving the conductor driver in charge. Many routes from London's two busiest termini, London Waterloo and London Victoria, funnel through the station making it one of the busiest in Europe by number of trains using it, more than one hundred an hour outside peak periods.
Each day about 2,000 trains, most stopping, pass through the station, more than through any other station in Europe.[5] At peak times 180 trains per hour pass through of which 117 stop. It is not the busiest station by number of passengers, most of whom (about 430,000 on a weekday, of which 135,000 are at rush hours) pass through. Interchanges make some 40% of the activity and on that basis too it is the busiest station in the UK.[6]
In 2011, the station had three entrances, all with staffed ticket offices, though only the south-east entrance is open 24 hours a day. The most heavily used of the three, this leads from St John's Hill via a small indoor shopping centre, into a subway some 15 ft (4.6 m) wide that connects to the eastern ends of all platforms.
The north entrance, which has restricted opening hours, leads from Grant Road to the same subway. The subway is crowded during rush hours, with the ticket barriers at the ends are pinch points.

It links Edinburgh near Waverley Station in Scotland and London at St. Paul's Cathedral in England. It passes through and near Hatfield, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Leeds, York, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
For much of its path it follows the Great North Road. Several sections of the route are classified as motorway. The modern course of this ancient route diverges where it passes through a town or village that has been bypassed, or where new motorway takes a more direct route. Between the M25 (near London) and A696 (near Newcastle upon Tyne) the road is part of the unsigned Euroroute E15 from Inverness to Algeciras.
The great North Road coaching route used by mail coaches between London, York and Edinburgh. The many inns on the road, many of which still survive, were staging posts on the coach routes, providing accommodation, stabling for the horses and replacement mounts. However, virtually none of the surviving coaching inns can be seen while driving on the A1, because the modern route now bypasses the towns in which the inns are to be found.
At Alconbury, the Great North Road joined the Old North Road, an older route from London which follows the Roman Ermine Street. Here a milestone records mileages to London via both routes: 65 by the Old North Road and 68 by the Great North Road. The journey has a number of food references. From Alconbury the Great North Road follows the line of Ermine Street north, through Stilton and Stamford as far as Colsterworth (at the A151 junction). The Winchelsea Arms was an inn on a long straight section of the Great North Road near Stretton which was reputed to be a haunt of Dick Turpin. It is now called the Ram Jam ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMLnDuzgkjo ) Inn after a story from those coaching days. A coach passenger undertook to show the landlady the secret of drawing both mild and bitter beer from the same barrel. Two holes were made and she was left with one thumb rammed against one and the other jammed into the other. The trickster then made off.
