The Court of the Lord Lyon, the heraldic authority for Scotland, has been responsible for the historic crest since 1920.
However, Leith councillor Rob Munn revealed that Leith will once again be allowed to use the coat of arms freely in three months' time.
Councillor Munn, Deputy Lord Provost, said: When Leith amalgamated with Edinburgh, the coat of arms fell out of use and was in the care of the Lord Lyon's office. Previously the Borough Council had it. Over the past decade or so there's been discussions about getting it back.
The crest of the flag features representations of Mary and Jesus in a sailing ship, under the legend Sigillum Oppidi De Leith, which translates as the seal of the town of Leith, and above the phrase Persevere, and is believed to have been brought to the community by 11th-century French traders.
The crest can still be seen on some lampposts, and on several old buildings in Leith.
The Court of the Lord Lyon is understood to have heraldic artists currently designing a slightly different version of the flag for the handover.
Its official title will be The Arms of Leith Neighbourhood Partnership and it will be based on the Arms of the former Leith Borough Council.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ31B - HMS Birkenhead, also referred to as HM Troopship Birkenhead or Steam Frigate Birkenhead, was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 87 miles (140 kilometres) from Cape Town in the Cape Colony. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely and escape the sinking. Only 193 of the estimated 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the unofficial women and children first protocol when abandoning ship, while the Birkenhead drill of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances. This mural was painted in appalilng weather conditions in January 2020 by Liverpool artist, Paul Curtis. Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly the Sail Training Association, based in Portsmouth, is a charity registered with the Charity Commission.[1] It was founded in 1956 and is dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through the crewing of ocean-going yachts. Each year, TSYT supports around 1,000 young people from across the UK through exhilarating voyages.
Tall Ships Youth Trust has operated a variety of craft
it used to own TS KI Sir Winston Churchill and TS K2 Malcolm Miller. These two three-masted topsail schooners are now privately owned and in the Mediterranean. TSYT used to operate a second sister-ship in addition to Stavros S Niarchos, the Prince William. However Prince William was removed from operational status at the end of 2007, to make way for the new Challenger yachts. In 2010 she was sold to the Pakistan Navy and renamed Rah Naward (Swift Mover).
The Challenger yachts provide a flexible approach to sail training, allowing TSYT to scale the amount of sailings relative to demand (i.e. not all yachts need to sail).
The Challenger yachts were part of a 12 strong fleet of Challengers built and raced in the 2000/1 and 2004/5 BT Global Challenge. The purchase of the craft provides TSYT with four stable, reliable and extremely well-tested craft to base a sail training program upon.

Mossdale's fabric is representative of a typical wooden Mersey flat, being built of oak frames on pitch pine planking doubled where necessary to achieve her shape. Her large foredeck windlass fitted her to work in the tidal Mersey, with a smaller windlass used when warping her into docks. In 1933, Mossdale underwent a major re-build which included lengthening her to 72 feet. Her increased length represents an important period in her working life, marking the development in trade caused by the industrial revolution and the need for her to carry a greater cargo to pay her way. With no means of propulsion, she would generally have been towed by a horse or tug.
Mossdale was never rigged as a sailing flat, but is a good example of a regional river barge from North-West England. She has a substantial rudder, a typical flat bottom, a round bilge and bluff square bows.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M7R - The Manchester Ship Canal Company was formed in 1882 with the aim of linking Manchester to the sea via a navigable canal and river route. The idea had been floating around since 1660, but it was the Manchester manufacturer Daniel Adamson who brought together the men who could actually make it happen in June of 1882. The bill that they proposed to Parliament was initially rejected, but was finally passed in May 1885, and was known as the Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885.
The ship canal took six years to complete at a cost of just over £15 million, equivalent to about £1.65 billion in 2011, and measures thirty-six miles in length, from the Mersey Estuary at Eastham on the Wirral to Manchester.
I've not been able to determine what year they were granted their coat of arms, but what's interesting about it is that bees are featured in two location, because it combines elements of the arms of Manchester, Salford and Warrington, as can be seen below.

Queen of Mercia
This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been, i.e. in the direction of the railway bridge.
Designed and made by sculptor Phil Bewes who now works with his partner Diane Gorvin. They did other work in the Runcorn area in the 1980's, especially at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. They are now based in the Forest of Dean area. They have a lovely website at www.bewsgorvin.co.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AXKD48 - In July 1620, the Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe and picked up 65 passengers, probably from Blackwall, then proceeded to Southampton on the south coast of England to begin loading food and supplies for the voyage to America. At that time, the English Separatists, who later became known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were mostly still living in the city of Leiden, in the Netherlands. There they hired a ship called the Speedwell to take them from Delftshaven in the Netherlands to Southampton to join the Mayflower.
The ship's master, Christopher Jones, died shortly after his return in 1621 and is buried in an unmarked grave at St Mary's Church. No one can be sure where on the Rotherhithe peninsula the Mayflower was berthed, but the Mayflower pub near St Mary's Church claims the honour, and lists the names of the Mayflower passengers on their wall. The building itself, despite external and interior appearances, dates only from the 1950s. The extent to which the pub was damaged during the Second World War, and was rebuilt or simply restored is uncertain

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T1 - The beginnings of Anchor Line Ltd can be seen in 1838 when two brothers, Nicol and Robert Handyside, established themselves in Glasgow, Scotland, as shipbrokers and merchants. They used chartered tonnage to trade with the Baltic and Russia. The business operated under the name N & R Handyside & Co, and in 1852 the name Anchor Line was used by them for the first time, but only as a by-line in an advertisement.
In the same year Thomas Henderson joined the business. The business bought its first ship from the builders in 1854. In June 1855, Thomas Henderson became a full partner and the firm was renamed Handysides & Henderson. This firm became D & W Henderson when shipbuilding commenced. That company went out of business in 1863, and the trade was taken over by the Anchor Line of Peninsular & Mediterranean Steam Packets.
In 1865, the Anchor Line opened its own office in New York under the name Henderson Brothers, and sold tickets through more than three thousand ticket agencies throughout North America. An office was also opened in Londonderry, Ireland. In 1869, Henderson Brothers opened offices at Liverpool, England, and Dundee, Scotland.
A service from Naples, Italy, to New York began. In November 1869, the Suez Canal opened and this made India as important to the Anchor Line as America now that the Far East was 4,000 miles closer. An Anchor vessel made the first British merchant ship journey, southbound through the canal, on the day following the opening.
In 1872, the Anchor Line and D & W Henderson jointly bought the shipyard of Tod & MacGregor, Meadowside, Partick, Glasgow, to build the hulls into which the engines from D & W Henderson's Finnieston works could be fitted. They opened a Manchester office in 1882.
In 1899, the name Anchor Line (Henderson Bros) Ltd came into being by the formation of a limited liability company. The Cunard Steamship Co Ltd bought the whole of the Ordinary shares of the Anchor Line (Henderson Bros) Ltd in 1911.

The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H6JN01 - Aberdeen Harbour was the first publicly limited company in the United Kingdom and is today the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and an international port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The harbour also serves NorthLink Ferries, which sail to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum (on Shiprow in the city centre) includes exhibitions and displays which tell the story of the harbour and its role in the economy and development of the city.
Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of £80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m²) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m²) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.

During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.

For some years, between April and September each Tuesday evening is 'Motorbike Night'. Coles Miller are soliciters and are now 'sponsoring' the event.
From 6pm, the Quay is closed to all traffic, which lets everyone wander around and look at the various machines. Owners, many well heeled, plus the odd Satans Slave and Hells Angel are keen to show off their pride &
joy.
On this tuesday evening there must have been 1000 to 1500 bikes. A panorama joiner in a Hockney style is probably the only way to show the size of the spectacle.
This has been formed from over 20 images and the original size is 15115x7115 pixels.

Babylon Zoo were a British rock band of the mid-1990s from Wolverhampton, England, fronted by Jas Mann. They were best known for the song 'Spaceman', which on its release on 21 January 1996, went straight to #1 on the UK Singles Chart, selling 418,000 copies in the first week of release.

At their height, the Manchester Docks was the third-busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined in the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3,000 jobs.
In 1983, Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks covering 220 acres (90 ha) from the Manchester Ship Canal Company with the aid of a derelict land grant. The area was rebranded as Salford Quays and redevelopment by Urban Waterside began in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan.
Early in the planning stages for redevelopment of Salford Quays in 1988, potential was recognised for a landmark arts venue, the Salford Quays Centre for the Performing Arts, which became known as the Lowry Project in 1994. It had secured £64 million in funding by 22 February 1996.
The Lowry stands at the end of Pier 8, largely surrounded by the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal. Designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford, it opened on 28 April 2000 and houses the 1,730 seat Lyric theatre, the 466 seat Quays theatre, studio spaces and 17,330 sq ft (1,610 m2) of gallery space. There are cafes, bars and a restaurant at the south-western end of the building. The centre is associated with L. S. Lowry, and houses a collection of his work

Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1988.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist UNESCO attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4475858832 - 'The Cantilever Ship Canal bridge (rightly called the Latchford High Level Bridge) B5157 connects Fairfield and Station Road in south Warrington. The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

The Warburton Toll Bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal on the B5159 road, connecting Warrington with Trafford. There was an old stone bridge across the now dried up bed of the diverted River Mersey from 1863, there was an original toll for this.
The toll contributes towards the maintenance of the high level bridge style metal bridge and approach road. There is a limit of 3 tons on the bridge. The last time I crossed it was 12p. I believe a 25p ticket can be taken and used all day, a bit like the Thelwall ferry www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4337673883/ . There is also an annual pass from the MSCC.
If you cross, tolls are charged from 7am till 10pm Monday to Friday, from 8am Saturday and 9am on a Sunday. At 10pm until the following morning there is no charge to cross. Apparently its one of the few remaining pre-motorway toll bridges in the UK and the only one in Greater Manchester. So a little bit of history.

A dark, slightly decaying underused and slightly disturbing place to hang about at night.

A number of cars and pedestrians were piling up, hence the two lads on the front of the boat waving.
The happy falcon is a frequent visitor to Carrington and is a LPG Tanker. For anyone interested it is IMO no 9227261 Flag IOM. It was Built 2002 and is 3366gt.
As can be seen its got a great red coloured hull and the boat can be easily seen from some distance away.

The National Lottery provided over £21 million of funding towards its construction. The project was completed in 1999 at a cost of £106 million. The Lowry name was adopted in honour of the local artist, L. S. Lowry.
The complex is close to the Imperial War Museum North and the Old Trafford football stadium. It is served by the MediaCityUK stop on the Metrolink tram network. MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK Metrolink station on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of Broadway Link Road.

Heres a track that comes up a lot on my shuffle and it cropped up this very morning.
Initially a Leeds left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid 1980s. Scritti Politti originally consisted of Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer) as the lead vocalist, Nial Jinks as bass player, Tom Morley as drummer, and Matthew Kay as the manager who sometimes played the keyboard.
The name 'Scritti Politti' was chosen as a homage to the Italian Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci: The name is generally understood to refer to Gramsci's political writings (although the correct spelling in Italian would have produced 'Scritti Politici'). Gartside changed it to 'Scritti Politti' as he thought it sounded more rock and roll, like 'Tutti Frutti'.
'Skank Bloc Bologna' picked up airplay on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, and the band were signed to the 'Rough Trade' label under Geoff Travis in 1979,
Gartside and Jinks had gone to school together in South Wales, and Gartside met Morley at Leeds Polytechnic, a college they both attended. They played one show as 'The Against' in 1976, doing covers of Chelsea songs. Disillusioned and bored with art school, Gartside and Morley left in June 1978 and moved into a squat at 1 Carol Street in Camden Town, London. Jinks was invited to join the band. Gartside apparently taught him how to play the bass in three weeks.
Gartside recorded a demo of one of his new songs, 'The Sweetest Girl', in January 1981, and the song was included on a compilation of songs on cassette (the C81) given out with the March issue of NME. I still have it in the loft somewhere.
Success in the 1980's led to a number of LP releases and in 1988, 'Provision' contained this little gem.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MDM - The Silver Jubilee Bridge or Runcorn Bridge crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn Gap between Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire, England. It is a through arch bridge with a main arch span of 1,082 feet (330 m).
It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, and was initially known simply as the Runcorn Bridge or RuncornWidnes Bridge. In 197577 it was widened, after which it was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway. The bridge has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed structure
The new bridge had to allow the passage of shipping along the Manchester Ship Canal. Many ideas were considered, including a new transporter bridge or a swing bridge. These were considered to be impractical and it was decided that the best solution was a high-level bridge upstream from the railway bridge. This would allow the least obstruction to shipping and would also be at the narrowest crossing point.
The first plan for a high-level bridge was a truss bridge with three or five spans, giving a 24 feet (7 m) dual carriageway with a cycle track and footpaths. This was abandoned because it was too expensive, and because one of the piers would be too close to the wall of the ship canal. The next idea was for a suspension bridge with a span of 1,030 feet (314 m) between the main towers with a 24 feet (7 m) single carriageway and a 6-foot (2 m) footpath. However aerodynamic tests on models of the bridge showed that, while the bridge itself would be stable, the presence of the adjacent railway bridge would cause severe oscillation.
The finally accepted design was for a steel through arch bridge with a 30-foot (9 m) single carriageway. The design of the bridge is similar to that of Sydney Harbour Bridge but differs from it in that the side spans are continuous with the main span rather than being separate from them. The bridge features prominently on the backdrop for the BBC North West Tonight television news programme, which also shows The Lowry and MediaCityUK.
Designed by Carlos Fernandez Casado, the bridge has a main span of 91.2 metres in a Lohse Arch, with the peaks of the twin arches connected at the crown. These brace one another, resulting in greater structural rigidity. The deck is connected to the arches with vertical members, which splay outwards at an increasing angle towards the centre of the span. The sweeping arches are decorated with coloured LED lighting, while the deck is illuminated with white downlighting. Pedestrians are protected from the prevailing winds by glass sides, coloured blue at foot level and tapering in, following the angle of the arches.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H6JMTG - Aberdeen Harbour was the first publicly limited company in the United Kingdom and is today the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and an international port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The harbour also serves NorthLink Ferries, which sail to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum (on Shiprow in the city centre) includes exhibitions and displays which tell the story of the harbour and its role in the economy and development of the city.
Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of £80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m²) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m²) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m²) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

Previously the site of Manchester Docks, it became one of the first and largest urban regeneration projects in the United Kingdom following the closure of the dockyards in 1982.
Built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Salford Docks was the larger of two sections that made up Manchester Docks
the other being Pomona Docks to the east.
They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height the Manchester Docks were the third busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined during the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3000 jobs
