Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ3X - Wellpark Brewery is a brewery in Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland.
It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral, by Hugh and Robert Tennent, although brewing had taken place at the same site on the banks of the Molendinar Burn by their ancestor, Robert Tennent, since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.
Hugh Tennent's sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J & R Tennent from 1769. The business expanded in the 1790s when the Tennent family purchased the neighbouring brewery of William McLehose, and renamed the 5-acre (20,000 m2) site Wellpark Brewery.
The firm originally brewed stout and strong export ales. By the mid-19th century J&R Tennent was the world's largest bottled beer exporter. Robert Tennent died in 1826 and John Tennent in 1827. Hugh Tennent (the eldest son of Robert) then assumed control of the business. Hugh Tennent retired in 1855 with his fifth son, Charles Tennent, taking over, but he died in 1864, some months before his father. The brewery was subsequently operated by trustees on behalf of Charles Tennent's sons, Archibald and Hugh.
In 1884 Hugh Tennent took control of the company and first brewed Tennent's lager in 1885. He later built a new lager brewery on the Wellpark site, which was begun in 1889 and completed in 1891. J&R Tennent produced the first draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGP31M - Amaryllis is the only genus in the subtribe Amaryllidinae (tribe Amaryllideae). It is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species. The better known of the two, Amaryllis belladonna, is a native of the Western Cape region of South Africa, particularly the rocky southwest area between the Olifants River Valley and Knysna.
For many years there was confusion among botanists over the generic names Amaryllis and Hippeastrum, one result of which is that the common name 'amaryllis' is mainly used for cultivars of the genus Hippeastrum, widely sold in the winter months for their ability to bloom indoors.
Plants of the genus Amaryllis are known as belladonna lily, Jersey lily, naked lady, amarillo, Easter lily in Southern Australia or, in South Africa, March lily due to its propensity to flower around March. This is one of numerous genera with the common name 'lily' due to their flower shape and growth habit. However, they are only distantly related to the true lily, Lilium. In the Victorian language of flowers, amaryllis means love, beauty, and determination, and can also represent hope and achievement

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM9A0R - The leather subculture denotes practices and styles of dress organized around sexual activities that involve leather garments, such as leather jackets, vests, boots, chaps, harnesses, or other items. Wearing leather garments is one way that participants in this culture self-consciously distinguish themselves from mainstream sexual cultures. Many people associate leather culture with BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, Sado/Masochism, also called SM or S&M) practices and its many subcultures. But for others, wearing black leather clothing is an erotic fashion that expresses heightened masculinity or the appropriation of sexual power

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BC3999 - Shoe fetishism is the attribution of attractive sexual qualities to shoes or other footwear as a matter of sexual preference, or an alternative or complement to a relationship with a partner. It has also been known as retifism, after the French novelist Nicolas-Edme Rétif (October 23, 1734“February 2, 1806), also known as Rétif de la Bretonne.
Individuals with shoe fetishism can be erotically interested in women's shoes. Although shoes may appear to carry sexual connotations in mainstream culture (for example, women's shoes are commonly sold as being sexy) this opinion refers to an ethnographic or cultural context, and is likely not intended to be taken literally. Another fetishism, which sometimes is seen as related to shoe fetishism, is boot fetishism.
These shoes, a huge pair of red heels were the source of much bemusement when they were suddenly dropped off outside the Caci Room salon on Gainsborough Road earlier this year.
But now the high heels, which Caci Room landlord Kelvin Smith told the Warrington Guardian were an advertisement for his garden ornaments business, have been moved to a spot just off the Cockhedge roundabout on Crossley Street.

This is a track I remember from the tail end of the Madchester period. A good one to be uplifted from a grey wet Manchester afternoon!
Deee-Lite you may remember was an American house and club/dance group, formed in New York City, United States. The group's best-known single was 'Groove Is in the Heart', from their 1990 debut album, World Clique.
The members of Deee-lite were Super DJ Dmitri (Dmitry Brill), Lady Miss Kier,
Towa Tei (Dong-hwa Chung) &
DJ Ani.
The tune 'Groove is In the Heart' featured lyrics from Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, and bass guitar and vocals by Bootsy Collins.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4574527758 - 'Lucky Pete outside his traditional british chippy at 4 Winnington Lane, Northwich, Cheshire. I have had a few chip suppers from Petes when photographing gigs and bands just down the road at the w=33062170@N08\'>Winnington Park Rec'. I can recommend his fish in cajun spiced batter, just have some lager at the ready! His sign states 'Simply The Best Chippy In Winnington'. That cannot be denied as he has the 'only' chippy in Winnington, however he does do top chips!
Fish and chips, often referred to as national takeaway food of these islands originated in the victorian era. It is pretty much everywhere and even in rural areas, like Cornwall or Mull, it often arrives by mobile van in the evening. Around 1860, it is legend that the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Jewish proprietor Joseph Malin who married together 'fish fried in the Jewish fashion' with thick chiped potatoes. In 1863 the chip shop reached Manchester, when a Mr Lees opened a shop in Mossley. Interestingly, throughout world war II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Salt and vinegar (spirit preferred) or gravy usually goes with it.
Across britain, fish and chip shops offer a varied menu. Pete covers the usual staples
mushy peas, Dinaclass curry sauce, sausages, heated (but not fried) pies and suit puddings, gravy, fried chicken. Further north you can expect scallops (wide slices of potato in batter), deep fried Mars bars, deep fried pizza and haggis are popular in Scotland. In Edinburgh you would most likely buy a 'supper' with 'Salt n sauce' (watered down brown sauce - 'sottensauce'). In many places you can buy a whole picked egg or individual pickled onions too. In east Anglia and the south east fish roes or rock salmon can often be found.
Most places use vegatable oil these days, but a few proudly fry in lard (and generally have a sign outside shouting the fact). Waste frying oil is sometimes nowadays used to make bio-diesel. Older diesel cars can often run on it without modification. I would not try it in a HDI style engine though!
As a kid I remember the local chippy doing fizzy minerals too. Ben Shaws from Huddesfield with 2p back on the bottle, which was returned. Collect enough of those to take back and you had enough for a bag of chips with batter bits (and pea-wet if you couldn't afford a proper portion of green mushy peas). You always got it in newspaper too, that was before the possible perils of printers ink were legislated for. Still the terrible names are still there
Codfellas, FryDays, 'Good Buy Mr Chips', 'The Fryery' , 'The Codfather', 'The Frying Scotsman' and the classic 'Assault and Battery'.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is one of my all time favourite tracks and one of Matt Johnsons finest lyrical masterpieces from the Some Bizarre record label.
Its generally the best known track on Soul Mining, 'The The's second album, released in 1983. The album version of 'Uncertain Smile' featured the piano playing of Jools Holland. Holland revealed in his 2007 biography that it is in fact two separate solos joined together. The original single used flute and sax solos played by Crispin Cioe of the Uptown Horns. The cover artwork is by Andy Johnson, Matt Johnson's brother, aka Andy Dog.
If you are unfamiliar with 'The The' checkout '45 RPM: The Singles of The The', an excellent trip through 15 or more years of the band. Hunt it down, tell 'em I sent you.
------------------------
Peeling the skin back from my eyes, I felt surprised
That the time on the clock was the time I usually retired
To the place where I cleared my head of you
But just for today, i think I'll lie here and dream of you.
I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in,
But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to SWIM AND pull you out.
A howling wind blows the litter as the rain flows,
As street lamps pour orange coloured shapes through your window,
A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes,
Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile...
I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in,
But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to swim and pull you out.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4420441332 - 'Another sign that spring is just about upon us, on a cold but bright March afternoon.
Hazel is common across europe and its outer edges. It is often seen with Oak on more fertile and lower lying ground. Hazel is a member of the birch family of trees, Betulaceae, and can grow to a height of 10 metres, although full height is seldom seen in Britain.
Typically it has a number of shoots or trunks branching out at, or just above, ground level, and this growth habit has led to some people referring to it as a bush rather than a tree, because it doesn't meet the strict definition for a tree, of having a single stem that is unbranched near the ground.
Male flowers are in the form of catkins, which are pale yellow in colour and up to 5 cm. long. They open in February, when hazel and its companion deciduous trees are all leafless, so they are one of the first obvious signs of spring in the forest. The female flowers are tiny red tufts, growing out of what look like swollen buds, and are visible on the same branches as the male catkins. Pollination is by wind, and hazel is self-incompatible - successful pollination only occurs between different trees, as a single tree cannot pollinate itself.
Fertilised female flowers grow into nuts which are up to 2 cm. in size and occur in clusters of 1 to 4. Each nut is partially enclosed by a cup-shaped sheath of papery bracts, or modified leaves. The nuts ripen to a brown colour in September and October, with the nut itself enclosed by a tough woody shell. Empty nuts are an occasional occurrence.
The nuts are distributed by squirrels, woodpeckers, and, after falling to the ground, by other small rodents. Most of the nuts are consumed by these dispersers, but some of those which are hoarded for winter, or are overlooked, germinate and grow the following spring.
Hazel leaves are eaten by roe deer and red deer, and the nuts, which are rich in fats and protein, are eaten by the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) and squirrels. Squirrels split the shell of the nut in two halves to get the kernel inside, whereas wood mice will gnaw a hole through the shell. In England, hazel is an important tree for the dormouse.
Many thanks for SB for pointing me to a lot of info about Hazel that I never knew :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4414882545 - 'Vulcan Foundry was a locomotive builder in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, on the edge of Warrington. Bridge girders was its original business when opened in 1832 as Charles Tayleur and Co. The opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway produced a ready flood of orders. In 1898, the it was renamed 'The Vulcan Foundry Limited'.
The works was important enough to have its own railway station. This was called Vulcan Halt, on the former Warrington and Newton Railway line from Earlestown to Warrington Bank Quay. The halt was opened in November 1916 by the London and North Western Railway. Dr Beeching closed it in 1965.
The first engines manufactured were similar to Stephenson's 'Planet' design for the North Union Railway. This was formed from the Wigan Branch Railway and the Wigan and Preston Junction Railway. Similar engines were made for the Warrington and Newton Railway. It might be likely that this brass plate came from one of those engines.
From 1835 onwards quite an export trade florished. Vulcan sold to to France, Russia and Austria. In 1852 the first locomotives ever to run in India were supplied to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. Export to India continued until after WWII, but decline was imminent. Vulcan had already diversified into Diesel and Electric units.
The factory became part of English Electric, then Lord Winestock's GEC where I secured my first paid employment and was aware of it (some people still calling it Ruston Diesels). The works closed in 2002 and although Vulcan Village survives, little evidence except the name of the industrial estate which keeps its name marks it out.
So the foundry went the same way as Bayer Garrett in Manchester. If you travel to the edges of what used to be the old imperial British Empire, you will still see some trains bearing plates like these. Many still functioning and lavished with love, care and attention.

Its one of my favourite spices, ground on to most things I eat if needed or not. Also, a few slipped into boiling rice to go with a curry sauce.
Black pepper is a native plant of South India and is extensively grown there and elsewhere in tropical regions. The pink balls of the fresh fruit can be seen on the trees and when crushed in its raw state has a sweet pepper aroma. Green peppercorns are just the immature fruits.
Cochin in southern india is a major spice centre and it is easy to visit some of the spice warehouses etc. I remember when backpacking around Cochin there was the smell of pepper in the air and quite often you were crushing escapee peppercorns underfoot - marvellous.

The Ronson brand came from inventer Louis Aronson. In 1913 he applied for a patent for his first primitive lighter. It was to be a wait until 1926 when he released a new 'automatic operation' Banjo lighter, which offered both ignition and extinguishment in a single push.
Aronson patented it and sold it under the Ronson brand name. I remember cool mates and arsonists having Ronson petrol and gas lighters in the early 1980's.
In the new age of largely 'matchless' smoking (and in pubs, smoking outside, spilling onto the street in the UK and Ireland), Ronson now manufacture mainly disposables like this one.
Last year (2009) they were named in a takeover bit by Zippo, another previously sometimes cool lighter company.

The Royal Standard of Scotland, also known as the Banner of the King of Scots, or more commonly the Lion Rampant of Scotland (as shown here), is the Scottish Royal Banner of Arms. Used historically by the King of Scots, the Royal Standard of Scotland differs from Scotland's national flag, the Saltire, in that its correct use is restricted by an Act of the Parliament of Scotland to only a few Great Officers of State who officially represent the Sovereign in Scotland. It is also used in an official capacity at royal residences in Scotland when the Sovereign is not present

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4343989477 - 'We have all had one fill a chest pocket of a shirt in the office with blue or black gunge at some point. Here is a Parker Arrow ball point pen (as named after George Safford Parker - founder) using an extreme macro lens. (20mm Olympus OM Macro) The viscous ink is clearly visable. This one was given to me on my 21st birthday by my second cousin. It was incorrectly engraved originally with her name and phone number instead of mine. Maura might not thank me for pointing that out 8-)
A ballpoint pen has an internal chamber filled with a viscous ink that is dispensed at the tip during use by the rolling action of a small metal sphere. This is around 0.7mm to 1.2mm in diameter of brass, steel or tungsten carbide.
They are often called Biro's in Britain, named after contested inventor László Bíró. The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30/10/1888, to a John Loud. He was a leather tanner, attempting to make a writing implement that would be able to write on the leather he tanned, which the then-common fountain pen couldn't. The pen had a rotating small steel ball, held in place by a socket. Although the pen could be used to mark rough surfaces such as leather, as Loud intended, it proved to be too coarse for letter writing and was not commercially exploited.
László Bíró, a Hungarian newspaper editor, was frustrated by the amount of time that he wasted in filling up fountain pens and cleaning up smudged pages, and the sharp tip of his fountain pen often tore his pages of newsprint. Bíró had noticed that the type of ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge free. He decided to create a pen using the same type of ink. Since, when tried, this viscous ink would not flow into a regular fountain pen nib, Bíró, with the help of his brother George, a chemist, began to work on designing new types of pens. Bíró fitted this pen with a tiny ball in its tip that was free to turn in a socket. As the pen moved along the paper, the ball rotated, picking up ink from the ink cartridge and leaving it on the paper. Bíró filed a British patent on 15/06/1938.
An interesting fact is that all ballpoint ink formulas are non-toxic, and the manufacturing and content of the ink is regulated in most countries.

The museum is one of the oldest municipal museums in the UK and reflects something of the important local Victorians around at the time (1848), their interests and travels. It is a grade II listed building and houses fossils, Egyptian artefacts as well as relics of the old Warrington industries such as steel (particularly wire), clocks, textiles, brewing, tanning and chemicals are on display.
Since designation as new town, it is hard to see the old history beyond the shopping sites and new roads and buildings.
It can be regarded as a dormitory town for manchester or Liverpool and to wait on central station for the 08:13 sort of confirms that stereotype, particularly the stand in the corridor until Birchwood. Slightly shamefully hat was how I came to live in Warrington many years ago.
If you have time, spend a quarter of an hour in this little municipal jewel box. Slide out some fossil draws and check out how it used to be.

The image I took from my ipod (like the MP3 sound I was getting) was no match for the real thing, a genuine 12' 45rpm single of the B5.
I saw them live in 1980 and they were more memorable than the headline band they supported.
Of course they were produced by the great but mis-guided Martin Hannet, who no doubt helped them achieve their unique Reggae-Punk sound.
I would recommend any music fan to checkout 'Who Killed Martin Hannett?: The Story of Factory Records' Musical Magician' or the excellent CD 'Zero: A Martin Hannett Story 1979-1991'
However do avoid 'In the Studio With Martin Hannett' - you will be dissapointed, sorely.
He was a big user of narcotics and drink, and this was to eventually hasten his death at the age of 41. Just before he died he had ballooned to 26 stone (364 pounds) and his coffin could not fit in the ground.
He was the total musical pioneer, always searching to create his own unique sound.
Of many 'Martin Hannett' Stories, one favourite is about when he once fell asleep over the mixing desk, his gigantic belly spreading and pushing the faders across the board, so that the sound went berserk -- the band stopped playing, and woke him up telling him that the levels were all over the place. 'Bollocks,' he replied, 'that's the best you've sounded all f---ing day.'
Interesting too that producer on this cut is Chris Nagle, also later involved with Clayton lads Gabrielle’s Wish and Jane Weaver's Kill Laura - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3809868192/

The first recorded match involving a team called Grappenhall took place on the 4th of September 1878 when Wycliffe Sunday School beat Grappenhall at Grappenhall by 49 runs to 21.
The match was not played on the Broad Lane ground which only opened 1892 . Earlier matches were played in Bellhouse Lane and then in Cross Lane. When the Cross Lane ground had to be closed to make way for the Manchester Ship Canal, the turf was bought to Broad Lane.
The first match was at St Elphins on 21st May and it ended in defeat. The following week saw a drawn match against Camden Victoria the scores being Grappenhall 54 all out, Camden Victoria 17-1. Presumably rain interfered at that point although The Guardian does not say so. the return on June 4th was won with Grappenhall replying to Camden 38 all out with a score 62 for 4
1970 to 1990s was one of the most consistent and successful in the clubs existence, winning numerous League and Cup competitions at all levels. Grappenhall was widely recognised as having the best one-day (knockout) team in the county,

This is an old school PCB (Printed Circuit Board) designed perhaps early 1980's and using surface mounted (soldered it looked like) components. It is from a Worcester Bosch central heating boiler. This type of board has largely been superseded by total integrated circuit designs. This the sight of actual components like this is now rare in modern electronics.
