Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ7903 - London Road Fire Station is a former fire station in Manchester, England. It was opened in 1906, on a site bounded by London Road, Whitworth Street, Minshull Street South and Fairfield Street. Designed in the Edwardian Baroque style by Woodhouse, Willoughby and Langham in red brick and terracotta, it cost £142,000 to build and was built by J. Gerrard and Sons of Swinton. It has been a Grade II* listed building since 1974.
In addition to a fire station, the building housed a police station, an ambulance station, a bank, a coroner's court, and a gas-meter testing station. The fire station operated for eighty years, housing the firemen, their families, and the horse-drawn appliances that were replaced by motorised vehicles a few years after its opening. It was visited by royalty in 1942, in recognition of the brigade's wartime efforts. After the war it became a training centre and in 1952 became the first centre equipped to record emergency calls. However, the fire station became expensive to maintain and after council reorganisation decline set in.
The building was the headquarters of the Manchester Fire Brigade until the brigade was replaced by the Greater Manchester Fire Service in 1974. The fire station closed in 1986, since when it has been largely unused despite several redevelopment proposals. It was placed on English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Register in 2001 and in 2010 Manchester City Council served a compulsory purchase order on the fire station's owner, Britannia Hotels. Britannia announced in 2015 their intention to sell the building opening up the possibility of redevelopment after nearly 30 years of dereliction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBMTB - The Principal Manchester, originally known as the Refuge Assurance Building or Refuge Building after the insurance company stands at the corner of Oxford Street and Whitworth Street in Manchester, England. The building was previously known as the Palace Hotel.
The first phase of this Grade II* listed red brick and terracotta building was designed for the Refuge Assurance Company by Alfred Waterhouse and built 18911895. The inside was of Burmantofts faience and glazed brick. The ground floor was one enormous open business hall.
It was extended, with a striking 217-foot (66 m) tower, along Oxford Street by his son Paul Waterhouse in 19101912. It was further extended along Whitworth Street by Stanley Birkett in 1932.
After occupying the building as offices for nearly a century, the Refuge Assurance Company departed the building for a new purpose site in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall, Cheshire on Friday 6 November 1987. The Refuge Assurance company had discussed converting the building into a new home for the Hallé Orchestra with one of Manchester's cultural patrons Sir Bob Scott for over a year. The £3 million funding required for the project did not materialise and the Halle subsequently moved from the Free Trade Hall to the new Bridgewater Hall upon opening in 1996.
Local architecture critic John Parkinson-Bailey noted that one of the most prestigious and expensive buildings in Manchester lay forlorn and empty except for a caretaker and the ghost on its staircase. It was converted to a hotel by Richard Newman in 1996 at a cost of £7 million, and was named the Palace Hotel, owned and operated by the Principal Hotel Company. The hotel is purported to be haunted. The hotel was rebranded 'The Principal Manchester' in November 2016.
The building is also now home to restaurant and bar 'The Refuge by Volta' which sits on the corner of Oxford Street and Whitworth Street. Developed in collaboration with DJs-turned-restaurateurs Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford of the a

Waiting staff follow rules and guidelines determined by the manager. Waiting staff carry out many different tasks, such as taking orders, food-running, polishing dishes and silverware, helping bus tables and restocking working stations with needed supplies.
Waiting on tables is part of the service sector and among the most common occupations in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that, as of May 2008, there were over 2.2 million people employed as servers in the U.S.

My all time favourite band of blokes with beards, the only one without whose surname is Beard. Its got to be the men from Texas Zed Zed Top. I got into them in the late 70's and marvelled at them at The Manchester Apollo and a few other places.
Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last 35 years, ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in June 1970 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. The band and its members went through several reconfigurations throughout 1969, achieving their current form when Hill replaced bassist Billy Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
ZZ Top were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records
their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units. The band released their latest studio album, La Futura, in September 2012 and began a supporting tour in October.
This track is from Degüello the sixth studio album by American blues rock band ZZ Top, released in 1979 . 'Degüello' is a Spanish noun that means 'beheading' or, idiomatically, 'no quarter' (as in 'no surrender to be given or accepted--a fight to the death') It was the title of a Moorish-origin bugle call used by the Mexican Army forces at the Battle of the Alamo, Texas, in 1836.
Degüello was produced by Bill Ham, and engineered by Bob Ludwig and recorded and mixed by Terry Manning.
Chevrolet also known as Chevy, is an American brand of vehicle produced by General Motors (GM). Chevrolet was founded by Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant on November 3, 1911. In 1918 it was acquired by General Motors.
Chevrolet was positioned by Alfred Sloan to sell mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford's Model T in the 1920s, with 'Chevrolet' or 'Chevy' being synonymous with GM. In North America, Chevrolet produces and sells a wide range of vehicles, from subcompact automobiles to medium-duty commercial trucks, whereas in Europe, the brand name these days is used mainly for cars produced in Korea by General Motors. Vauxhall and Opel are the more mainstream European brands.
Registration plate 466XUK is here on 1949 Chevrolet 5.7 Litre Pick-up. Its currently brown but has been many colours in its lifetime. Its well restored, a cracking vehicle!

A great track from the London Conversations album. this time of year always reminds me of it with all the snowdrops in the hedgerows. Very uplifting that Easter and warmer, longer days just around the corner.
Saint Etienne are an English electronic music band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. They are named of course after the French football team AS Saint-Étienne
Saint Etienne were associated with the 'indie dance' genre in the early 1990s. Their typical approach was to combine sonic elements of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the so-called Second Summer of Love (e.g. samples and digitally synthesized sounds) with an emphasis on songwriting involving romantic and introspective themes more commonly associated with traditional British pop and rock music.
Early work demonstrated the influence of '60s soul, '70s dub and rock as well as '80s dance music, giving them a broad palette of sounds and a reputation for eclecticism. Years later, The Times wrote that they 'deftly fused the grooviness of Swinging Sixties London with a post-acid house backbeat'. Their first two albums, Foxbase Alpha and So Tough feature sounds chiefly associated with house music, such as standard TR-909 drum patterns and Italo house piano riffs mixed with original sounds, notable by the use of found dialogue, sampled from 1960s British realist cinema. Some of these earlier recordings included skits by (Brass Eye) satirist Chris Morris.

This is a shot of Caroline, a great lady who I was introduced to when taking some fashion shots last November. A fantastic bundle of fun who probably once you know her better, you could trust your life to.
Here she sports a lovely LBD (Little black dress) and the type of difficult to light hat that photographers hate.
An LBD. A Little Black Number. They say no lady's wardrobe is complete without one. Wearing black might not make those extra pounds disappear, but you can trick the eye into believing they have. Caroline doesn't need slimming effects and is a healthy 8-10.
As a general rule though, dressing from head to toe in a single color will instantly make you look slimmer. This is because wearing one color gives you a straight vertical line to look at and doesn’t emphasize any particular areas. When you wear more than one color, the eye is instantly attracted to where the break occurs, which is usually around the waist.
Black increases that slimming illusion because it does not reflect light. Other colors are affected by light, projecting reflections or casting shadows in areas where your body curves or the material bends and wrinkles. Black, on the other hand, doesn’t have this effect, so any imperfections remain hidden under the clothes. In short, black is a very effective color for hiding bulges, lumps and bumps. White highlights all shadows, making bulges and lumps prominent and causing the exact opposite effect of wearing black.
Beware, the slimming effect of black is somewhat diminished if you wear shiny materials like Lycra, satin or sequins. The shine on the clothes will produce reflections and sometimes shadows, depending on the type of cloth. It’s also important to remember that the slimming illusion of black only works from the back or front. If you stand sideways, the shape of your body becomes evident again

I was a latecomer to appreciating the talents of Roxy Music, born slightly too late I guess.
'Street Life' is the opening track of Roxy Music's third album Stranded, their first album with Eddie Jobson, who replaced the talented Brian Eno. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1973 and reached number 9 on the charts. Its non-LP B-side 'Hula Kula', an hawaiian-like instrumental composed by Phil Manzanera, was re-released on the 'The Thrill of It All' boxset.
Roxy Music are an English art rock group formed in November 1970 by Bryan Ferry, who became the group's lead vocalist and chief songwriter, and bassist Graham Simpson. The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and 'treatments'), and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin).
Although the band took a break from group activities in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have toured together intermittently since that time.
Roxy Music attained popular and critical success in the UK, Europe and Australia during the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their debut album, Roxy Music (1972). The band was highly influential, as leading proponents of the more experimental, musically sophisticated element of glam, as well as a significant influence on early English punk music.
They also provided a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. The group is distinguished by their visual and musical sophistication and their preoccupation with style and glamour. Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had influential solo careers, the latter becoming one of the most significant record producers and collaborators of the late 20th century.
This image was taken at 79 Rue Saint-Dominique, Paris 7th arrondissement. It is quite up-market, also home to many foreign diplomatic embassies, some of them occupying outstanding Hôtels particuliers.
The arrondissement is home to French upper class since the 17th century, when it became the new residence of French highest nobility. The district has been so fashionable within the French aristocracy that the phrase le Faubourg — referring to the ancient name of the current 7th arrondissement — has been used to describe French nobility ever since.
France's 2nd richest district in average income, this arrondissement is part of Paris Ouest, alongside the 6th, 8th, 16th arrondissements and Neuilly, and is usually considered the most aristocratic district of the area. Indeed, plat de jour at Thoumieux will set you back 80 Euros a head before service charge, water or wine. I have got to say though, the food is good!

Johnny Marr should need no introduction being one half the team that founded 'The Smiths' and on break up entered years of legal battles with the rest of the band members.
This track is from Boomslang, the first, and to date only album by Johnny Marr + the Healers. It was released in 2003 through Artistdirect and iMusic. The band consisted of drummer Zak Starkey and former Kula Shaker bassist Alonza Bevan with Marr handling guitars and lead vocals.
Boomslang received a mixed critical reaction. Uncut, Billboard and PopMatters gave the album positive reviews, while Q and Mojo published more lukewarm reactions.
In Rolling Stone, Pat Blashill wrote that the album 'shimmers with elements of T. Rex and traces of the Stone Roses – it's got all the atmosphere of a great rock record, but not the guts of one'
Sadly, Marr and his immense talent seems eclipsed by his nemesis Steven Patrick Morrissey.
This shot was taken at dusk in a warm, sweaty Paris evening, after a meal of Steak Tartare and a calvados and apple tart.I thanked my lucky stars I was not queuing for the Eiffel tower, I would have needed my supper before I got to the top.
The restaurant up there is horrendously expensive. There is a story about a man who once a week always took coffee up there. He was asked why with it being so expensive. He replied it was the only place in Paris he was sure he could take his coffee, look out of the window, and NOT see the Eiffel tower!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF2D - Pulmicort Asthma Inhaler with box with braille markings, held by a user of this medication.
What Is Pulmicort?
Pulmicort is an inhaled steroid used to control asthma symptoms. Pulmicort, along with other inhaled steroids like Flovent, is considered first-line treatment when you need more than occasional use of a rescue inhaler for your asthma. Pulmicort can be prescribed by itself or combined with a long-acting beta agonist to prevent asthma symptoms such as:
Wheezing
Chest tightness
Shortness of breath
Chronic cough
How Does Pulmicort Work?
Pulmicort reduces inflammation in the lungs and decreases airway hyper-responsiveness. By acting directly in the lungs, your airways are also less likely to respond to an asthma trigger.
Additionally, Pulmicort's benefits result from its action on a number of different cell types involved in the pathophysiology of asthma:
Basophils
Eosinophils
Lymphocytes
Macrophages
Mast Cells
Neutrophils
The decreased inflammation, mucus production, and hyperreponsiveness leads to a decrease in your asthma symptoms. Unlike your rescue inhaler, Pulmicort controls chronic asthma symptoms and should be taken daily in order to be effective.
How Is Pulmicort Prescribed?
Pulmicort is prescribed in 2 different forms. Pulmicort Respules are an inhalation suspension delivered via a special nebulizer and are available in several different strengths. Pulmicort is also available via a dry inhaled powder that is similar to a metered dose inhaler. Generally, you will take Pulmicort daily no matter how well your asthma symptoms are controlled. If your asthma control is excellent, talk with your doctor about considering a decrease in your medication.
The active component in Pulmicort, budesonide, is also in Symbicort, combination asthma inhaler, and in Rhinocort, a nasal spray for allergies. .

This is certainly a shop I would expect to find on 'Charlotte Street'.
Rattlesnakes was the debut album released in 1984 by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. The band formed in Glasgow and were a great success in the second half of the 1980's. The band were formed whilst Cole (who was born in Derbyshire, England) was studying at the University of Glasgow. After signing to Polydor Records, the band had a Top 40 UK hit with their debut single 'Perfect Skin' in Spring 1984.
The follow-up album, Easy Pieces, was produced by Clive Langer (ex Deaf School guitarist) &
Alan Winstanley (who had previously produced Madness, The Teardrop Explodes and Elvis Costello and the Attractions). Released in November 1985, the album was a much quicker commercial success than its predecessor (entering the UK album chart at no 5 and certified Gold within a month). The singles 'Brand New Friend' and 'Lost Weekend' were the band's first and only UK Top 20 hits (charting 19 and 17 respectively).
To track down some more Lloyd Cole, checkout 'Live at the BBC', volumes 1 and 2 (2007), which contains BBC broadcasts of live shows between 1984 and 1986.
Some trivia about Charlotte St, nothing to do with Lloyd Cole. Theresa Berkley was an early 19th century dominatrix who ran a brothel in at 28 Charlotte Street in London (now 84-94 Hallam Street), specialising in flagellation. Well I never!
Tell her I sent you!

This track was released summer of 2001 and this was from their second album 'Gotham!', which is worth checking out. Their last album release was back in 2006.

Chiswick Park tube station is in west London. It was opened in 1879 and remodelled in 1931 when the Piccadilly line was extended west. The new station was designed by Charles Holden in a modern European style using brick, reinforced concrete and glass. Holden's design was inspired by Alfred Grenander's underground station Krumme Lanke in Berlin.
Inside the station a number of the original signs and features remain. A notice under each mentions 'This sign has been retained as part of the heritage of Chiswick Park station. Please note you must change at Hammersmith for the Piccadilly line. Mark Lane Station is now called Tower hill'.
This is a pasted joiner panorama from about 30 iphone shots.

The Hollies are an English pop and rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and 1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
The original line-up included Graham Nash as guitarist and vocalist. You may know him from Crosby, Stills &
Nash, considered one of the first 'supergroups'.
This is a classic track, my favourite from the Hollies.
I am familiar with Asthma. It claimed the life of my mother, who suffered with it for many years.
Asthma (from the Greek άσθμα, ásthma, 'panting') is the common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Its characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm.
Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is clinically classified according to the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate.
It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment of acute symptoms is usually with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol). Alternatively glucocorticoid/corti steroids, such as Pulmicort, a brand name in the UK and Europe.
The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly since the 1970s. As of 2010, 300 million people were affected worldwide. In 2009 asthma caused 250,000 deaths globally.

This is a great track from a very under-rated artist. She spent some time in (Kurt Cobain ex Courtney Love's) Hole and in her younger years at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec as a photography major. Melissa Auf Der Maur has dual US &
Canadian citizenship and speaks both English and French.
In 2004, Melissa released her first solo effort Auf der Maur, garnering airplay on modern rock radio stations for the singles 'Followed the Waves,' 'Real a Lie' and 'Taste You. The same year, she appeared on the CBC television program The Greatest Canadian, as David Suzuki's celebrity advocate. Auf der Maur was part of the November 2004 'Love Metal' tour also featuring HIM and 2004's Curiosa. She was also the opening act for Matthew Good's 'Put Out Your Lights' tour in 2004, as well as for The Offspring's Splinter tour in 2004.
Auf der Maur is also an experienced photographer. She was a photography major specializing in self-portraiture at Concordia University when she was invited to join Hole in 1994. Her photos have been published in Nylon, Bust, Mastermind, and American Photo, among other magazines. Her photos were also in the exhibition The Kids are Alright at Sotheby's in New York City along with photos by Yelena Yemchuk.
She put together a solo exhibition in 2001, under the name of Channels. It mostly featured shots of Auf der Maur's life on the road, with a recurring TV theme and shots of hotel TV screens, hence the name Channels. The exhibition opened September 9, 2001, at Brooklyn's Secret Gallery, but was shut down after the September 11 attacks

Alluring mistresses in stone tempt us from the past and we certainly reproduce it in-finitum for our gardens and mantlepieces. Erotic fresco painting from Pompeii and Roman poetry is the main basis for (mis)information about adulterous Roman wives or glamorous mistresses. Propertius (who flourished 30-20 BC), Tibullus (48-19 BC) and Ovid (43 BC-AD 17) wrote love poems in the first person, each about a named mistress, following the lead of Catullus (c.84-54 BC), who had written short lyric poems about 'Lesbia'. These poems are set in a kind of fantasy world, and had a great influence on later European poetry.
Scholars have speculated that the 'Lesbia' he addressed in some poems was the elegant widow Clodia, who was attacked by the orator Cicero in court (in his defence of Caelius, 56 BC) for her loose living. The second-century satirist Juvenal devoted his longest poem to the horrors of marriage. It is a gallery of awful married women whose vices (such as body-building and correcting their husbands' grammar) include committing adultery with men, women and even donkeys! It's racy reading, but not exactly reportage.
In short, little is accurately known. Dont believe all you see in Dobbies....

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
The Comsat Angels was a post-punk band from Sheffield, England, active from 1978 to 1995. I have heard them described as the Yorkshire Joy Division.
Their music has been described as 'abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache.' They have been credited as being an influence to current post-punk revival bands, such as Blacklist, Editors and Interpol.
My introduction to them was a 12' white label promo of 'Eye Dance' I bought at Church Street records (a mere market stall) on the way down from high street to Shudehill in manchester.
They were named after the J. G. Ballard short story The Comsat Angels and consusted of Stephen Fellows (vox), Kevin bacon on bass guitar, Andy Peake on keyboards and Mik Glaisher on percussion. Their best albums were 'Waiting for a Miracle' (1980), which included the single 'Independence Day', probably their best known song, 'Sleep No More' (1981) and 'Fiction' (1982).
Mark Kermode, film critic for BBC Radio Five Live, championed the Comsat Angels when reviewing the Ian Curtis biopic Control, stating that Comsat Angels were 'the band that Joy Division should have been'. In May 2008, Kermode interviewed British poet Simon Armitage on BBC Two's The Culture Show and the two discussed their love of the band.
A reunion gig at the O2 Sheffield on the 26th April 2009 was introduced by Kermode. A trio of further gigs were announced that autumn, including the Manchester Academy.
The compilation album of the BBC sessions 1979-84 (Time Considered As A Helix Of Semi-Precious Stones) is the best introduction to this collosus of a band you will have probabaly not ever heard of. If you like this track, track it down! Gods speed.....

f6.3 were possible.
Film of the time would have been relatively slow 125asa. Many books with equipment adverts and information were published at the time, such as this British Journal Photographic Almanac 1949, published by Henry Greenwood and Co, wellington Street, The Strand, London. The Psychedelic Furs came together in England's emerging punk scene in 1977, where they were initially called 'RKO', then 'Radio'. They then vacillated between calling themselves 'The Europeans' and 'The Psychedelic Furs,' playing gigs under both names. They were one of my fave bands of the early 1980's.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes borrowed their song title 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat' from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was to be the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.
The Psychedelic Furs' debut, a self-titled album from 1980, was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The LP quickly established the band on radio in Europe and was a #18 hit in the UK Albums Chart.
In 1981 Talk, Talk, Talk was released and this was one of the singles from it. Dumb Waiters was Written by the Furs and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it was released as a single in the April. The New York City dance-punk band The Rapture recorded a cover of the song, which was included on the B-side of their 1998 debut single 'The Chair That Squeaks'.
I still have the 7' single with a playable sleeve (a clear flexydisk bonded to it) of a 'A Psychedelic Furs Commercial'. Writer Dave Thompson said the song 'captures the band at its most frenzied, a state of mind which subsequent live versions only amplified'.
I saw this played live in Liverpool. If you like this track, the compilation 'Should God Forget: a Retrospective' is a good intro to the band.
------------------------
Traditionally, a male waiting tables is called a 'waiter' and a female a 'waitress' with the PC gender-neutral version being a 'server'. In the UK,Germany and other Western countries, where minimum wages exist for servers and where tipping is not culturally entrenched, most tips take the form of rounding up to the nearest whole or half denomination of currency when the server is cashing a party out at their table. In the UK it is common practice to tip 10% of the cost of the meal.
By contrast, servers in Japan refuse tips because it isn't a Japanese custom.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a US rock band. They were formed in 1976 by Tom Petty (one of my favourite guitarists), Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench. The Heartbreakers began their recording career with a self-titled album. Initially, the Heartbreakers did not gain much traction in America, although they achieved success in the UK playing 'Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll' on Top of the Pops. Early singles included 'Breakdown' and 'American Girl'. 'Breakdown' was re-released in the USA and became a Top 40 hit in 1978, after word filtered back to the States that the band was creating a firestorm in the UK.
Their 1978 second album You're Gonna Get It! marked the band's first gold album, although sale of their record company led to bankruptcy. After the dispute was settled, the Heartbreakers released their third album Damn the Torpedoes (1979) which rapidly went triple-platinum.
Petty and his band the Heartbreakers celebrated their 30th anniversary with a tour in 2006, though Petty has occasionally released solo work, such as 2006's Highway Companion, on which he performed most of the backing instrumentation. Members of the Heartbreakers have played on each of his solo albums and the band has always backed him when touring

Clowns are comical performers, stereotypically characterized by their grotesque and foolish appearances: colored wigs, stylistic makeup, outlandish costumes, unusually large footwear, red-nose, etc., who entertain spectators by acting in a hilarious fashion. The types of their acts varies greatly. Although some find clowns to be scary, their intended purpose is to entertain people, especially young children.
Peter Berger writes that 'It seems plausible that folly and fools, like religion and magic, meet some deeply rooted needs in human society.' For this reason, clowning is often considered an important part of training as a physical performance discipline, partly because tricky subject matter can be dealt with, but also because it requires a high level of risk and play in the performer.
Billy The Clown works in and around Warrington. It always cracks me up when I have ever dropped anything off at his house and he has not been in. I go to his neighbour and ask 'Can I leave these for the clown next door!.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
One of Birmingham's best, Judas Priest often I feel get the raw end of the stick when compared in heavy metal terms to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Metalica &
Kiss. dating back to 1968, the band consist of founder vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton, KK. Downing, and bassist Ian Hill. Drummers have come and gone over the years. They have sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
I saw them two nights running at the Manchester Apollo in 1980 or 1981, supported probably by Budgie or Magnum. On one of the nights Halford came on with his big motorbike on stage and it toppled over on to him. It didn't affect the show however, it was still a cracking gig.
Judas Priest are also known for being revolutionaries in heavy metal fashion. Rob Halford thus began incorporating a macho image of what today is known as hardcore metal/biker/S&
M style into his look as early as 1978 (to coincide with the release of their album Killing Machine), and the rest of the band followed. The look was apparently sourced from S&
M boutiques that Halford visited while on tour.
It became a mainstay in heavy metal
soon, several other bands, particularly of the NWOBHM and early black metal movements, began incorporating Halford's fashion into their look as well. This sparked a revival in metal in the early '80s, and catapulted them to fame, in both the mainstream and underground. Even in the present, it is not uncommon to find metal artists sporting such a look at concerts.
In 1998, Halford came out as gay publicly on an interview with MTV News.

This shot was taken at the showery Manchester Pride 2010.
The first 'gay pride' event in Manchester was held in 1990. EuroPride was hosted in Manchester in 2003, and Since 2004 the title 'Manchester Pride' has been adopted. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, which centres around Canal Street, each year. The event comprises a Pride march, and several days of various arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as a festival during the August bank holiday weekend within the gay village itself.

?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is one of my favourite singles and another that I was introduced to via the late great John Peel on his 10 to midnight radio show in the late 1970's.
I still have my red vinyl version of the 'Furniture Music' 7'. It was backed by 'Acquitted By Mirrors' and 'Wonder Toys That Last Forever'. The A side appeared on their debut album, Sound On Sound. The two supporting tracks did not but were added as bonuses when the album was re-released on CD.
Bill Nelson's Red Noise, or called simply Red Noise, was a 'synthpop/new-wave' band, formed by Bill Nelson (lead vocals, guitar), his brother Ian (saxophone), Andy Clark (keyboards), Rick Ford (bass) and Steve Peer (drums), around 1978.
Nelson is one of England's under-rated genius musicians (maybe Yorkshires Peter Gabriel, if things had been different), and formed the band after dissolving Be-Bop Deluxe, while he was metamorphosing from blues, progressive and glam rock to more New Wave and electronic sounds. This was after the last Be-Bop Deluxe album, Drastic Plastic, released early 1978. This is certainley worth seeking out.
Clark also was a member of Nelson's previous band, and Ian Nelson collaborated with that group on the song 'Ships In The Night', from the Sunburst Finish album (1976). Peer was previously in TV Toy.
Red Noise released only one album, the seminal Sound On Sound, plus a two singles, Furniture Music and Revolt Into Style, in 1979. After that, Bill Nelson continued as a solo artist, with the collaboration of Clark and his brother Ian.
Furniture music has been described as the perfect single, clocking in at a little over three and a half minutes. John Aizlewood in 1999had it to a tee, when he wrote 'He would never better Sound-on-Sound, musically or lyrically. Tight songs, sharp lyrics and, in Furniture Music and Revolt Into Style, two should-have-been hit singles which reached numbers 59 and 69 in the UK charts respectively. The follow up never happened. What a mess'.
Now turned fifty, Nelson continues to make albums, recently signing to Robert Fripp's DGM label. Since the late-eighties he has become increasingly infatuated with capturing the creative spark at work, improvising material direct to tape and describing it as 'sonic snapshots', sketches rather than finished pieces. This resulted in many of his innumerable CD releases sounding like a collection of half-baked ideas haphazardly flung together as opposed to the fully-rounded soundscapes he used to construct. Although his latest, 'Atom Shop', is something of a return to form, 'Sound-on-Sound' captures Nelson at his creative and artistic peak. Get it, enjoy it, stay young (and keep in touch).
More on Bill Nelson here.
Each year he hosts Nelsonica in York. One day I will get to one of these.

Blüthner, formally Julius Blüthner Pianofortefabrik GmbH, is a piano-manufacturing company founded by Julius Blüthner in 1853 in Leipzig Germany.
By 1900 Blüthner had become the largest piano maker in Germany producing some 5,000 instruments annually. Innovations such as the Aliquot string, a fourth string that vibrated sympathetically and that is tuned in unison as well as the cylindrical soundboard and angle cut hammers created a unique voice for the Blüthner instrument.
This fine example is from Wimpole Hall near Cambridge.
Apparently, One Blüthner piano owned by the EMI Abbey Road Studios in London was used on some tracks of The Beatles' Let It Be album, most notably, in the hits 'Let It Be' and 'The Long and Winding Road'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4827403611 - 'At the centre of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, lies the Holy Trinity Church. Generally the postal centre of a town was its principle church or market square. The Georgian style church is a Grade II listed building.
A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. By the 1750s the chapel was too small for its congregation and in 1758 subscriptions were raised to build a new church, which was consecrated in 1760.
The architecture is in the style of James Gibbs, but he was ill at the time the church was built and it is thought it was designed by one of Gibbs' associates. In 1862 a west clock tower was added which was designed by W. P. Coxon, the Borough Surveyor
the tower belongs to the town rather than to the church.
In 1974 the south aisle was re-designed to form the Garven Room, a servery, a vestry and toilets. By the 1970s the roof had been damaged by wet and dry rot, woodworm and death watch beetle and was replaced in 1978–79. By 1990 the pipe organ was beyond repair and it has been replaced by a Makin electronic organ.
In 1988 the west end was remodelled, forming a lobby. In 1997 the east end was reordered, adding a room and extending the sanctuary area. In 1999 the clock was refurbished by Warrington Borough Council as a Millennium project.
I had gone into town to join the Scott Kelby photowalk but was a bit late. I had a walk around anyway, although did not spot anyone else obviously wandering around with a camera.

For contacts outside the UK, the Shipping Forecast is a four-times-daily BBC Radio broadcast of weather reports and forecasts for the seas around the coasts of the British Isles. It is produced by the Met Office.
Many people find the well-known repetition of the names of the sea areas almost hypnotic, particularly during the bedtime (for Britain) broadcast at 00:48 UK time. It is regarded with affection by many listeners, and in the United Kingdom often pops up in pub quizzes.
The zones start near the isle of Mull in Scotland and progress clockwise around Shetland, Tyne, Dover, Portland and through Shannon and the Irish sea. The General Synopsis is read, giving the position, pressure (in millibars) and track of pressure areas (e.g. Low, Viking, 981, deepening rapidly, expected North Utsire 964 by 0700 tomorrow).
BBC Radio 4 is the choice for the Shipping Forecast as it is a speech-based channel and broadcasts via longwave on 198 kHz as well as FM, and the longwave signal can be received clearly at sea all around the British Isles regardless of time of day or radio conditions. DAB radio is unlikely to cut the mustard for this one.
The Shipping Forecast is intended to be read at dictation speed to aid those who wish to write down the information. After all for many mariners, your life and that of your crew may well depend on it.
many musicians have name checked it. Notably one of my faves, (Yorkshire Anachists) Chumbawamba on the 'The Good Ship Lifestyle', on the album Tubthumper. It starts out with a listing of the sea areas in the wrong order. How anarchist(!). Beck includes a 27-second sample five minutes into the track 'The Horrible Fanfare, Landslide, Exoskeleton' on the album The Information too. Jethro Tull pn the album Stormwatch also predictably samples it.
All but two of the characters in the UK ITV cartoon 'The Adventures of Portland Bill' were named after the shipping areas or coastal weather stations. If you do the odd pub quiz, leave me a comment and I will let you know by Flickr mail if you are correct!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4733688312 - 'The 'Beeching Axe' is an informal name for the British Government's attempt in the 1960s to reduce the cost of running British Railways, the nationalised railway system in the UK. The name is that of the main author of The Reshaping of British Railways, Dr Richard Beeching.
Although this report also proposed new modes of freight service and the modernisation of trunk passenger routes, it is remembered for recommending wholesale closure of what it considered little-used and unprofitable railway lines, the removal of stopping passenger trains and closure of local stations on other lines which remained open. The Helston line was one such example.
Helston railway station was the terminus of the Helston Railway in Cornwall, in England (United Kingdom). It was later operated by the Great Western Railway (some called it Gods Wonderful Railway) but has since been closed.
Helston secured its place in history when it became the first place in the country with a railway-operated bus service. These GWR road motor services met trains at the station and carried passengers on towards The Lizard.
The Beeching report was a reaction to significant losses which had begun in the 1950s as the expansion in road transport began to attract passengers and goods from the railways
losses which continued to bedevil British Railways despite the introduction of the railway Modernisation Plan of 1955. Beeching proposed that only drastic action would save the railways from increasing losses in the future.
Successive governments were more keen on the cost-saving elements of the report rather than those requiring investment. More than 4,000 miles of railway and 3,000 stations closed in the decade following the report, a reduction of 25 per cent of route miles and 50 per cent of stations.
To this day Beeching's name is synonymous, in an unfavourable way with mass closure of railways and loss of many local services. This is particularly so in parts of the country which suffered most from cuts.
Many old lines are being resurected by volunteers and enthusiasts such as this one. The Helston Railway Preservation Society are working on the Trevarno branch line and hope one day to run a short service.
Their sister organisation, the Helston Diesel Group, has acquired a two car Park Royal Diesel Multiple Unit (shown here), and two Ruston &
Hornsby shunters, all now based at Trevarno. One of the shunters has been restored to use.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4720739399 - 'An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to 'ring' the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a 'bell,' for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a 'flank bell.'
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a 'cavitate bell' because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position 'Alarmtauchen', the order for a crash dive.
Most seen these days are copies. Most do not include the CL of Chadburn Liverpool which was the place of manufacture, as in this specimen here.

Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

Always a shame that the civilian casualties are not accessible in this way. It has been said though that 'The Truth, is always the first casualty of war'. (Often attributed to Winston Churchill).

Like many kids I stumbled across American super hero Marvel comics at school where I enjoyed Spider-man X-men and all those Stan Lee and Jack Kirby productions. Walking into the Millenium Comics shop is like going back in time for me. The smell of new editions and the slight mustyness of comics from the pre-Disney times. The smaller impring DC Comics can also be found here.
Marvel Comics issue one (or #1 as it is labelled) appeared in October 1939. It included the first appearance of Carl Burgos' android superhero the Human Torch, and the first generally available appearance of Bill Everett's anti-hero Namor the Sub-Mariner, among other features.
With the second issue the series title changed to Marvel Mystery Comics. Soon, Jack Kirby created one of the first patriotically themed superheroes, Captain America, in Captain America Comics #1. This had a circulation of approaching a million.
Through the years popularity grew. In 1971 the US Dept of Health, Education, and Welfare approached Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Stan Lee to do a comic-book story about drug abuse. Lee agreed and wrote a three-part Spider-Man story portraying drug use as dangerous and unglamorous.
Ironically the industry's self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, refused to approve the story because of the presence of narcotics, deeming the context of the story irrelevant. Lee, with Goodman's approval, published the story regardless in The Amazing Spider-Man #96-98 (May-July 1971), without the Comics Code seal.
Marvel attempted to diversify, and with the updating of the Comics Code achieved moderate to strong success with titles themed to horror (The Tomb of Dracula), martial arts, (Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu), sword-and-sorcery (Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja), satire (Howard the Duck) and science fiction (2001: A Space Odyssey, 'Killraven' in Amazing Adventures, Star Trek, and, late in the decade, the long-running Star Wars series.
A lot of my early comics were shared and passed around friends at school. Occasionally, comic fairs would be places to pick these up in Manchester or perhaps some 'Mad' back issues featuring the mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. Mad was the Simpsons of its time, witty and irreverant.
All kinds of gold nuggets can be found in the shop. The enjoyment of discovery better than the predictability of winning an ebay auction. If you are in Northwich, find them at the station end of Witton Street or at their other shop, open every day except sunday, in Warrington

The Phoenix Brewery is in Green Lane, Heywood, Lancashire. (OL10 2EP) just outside Manchester, UK. It is a regular at my local Grappenhall beer festival and is described as a 'English Strong Ale'. It is the reason I always buy a ticket for the first night (Friday at a premium of a pound - about $1.40 or EUR 1.15) in order to ensure I try at least a few halves of it. Often by Saturday it is already finito!
As can be seen it warrants its own pump at the festival, rather than just gravity fed like the casks at the back. Here are a few tasting notes from mixed sources:
Copper coloured ... creamy white head ... rich sweet fruit nose ... soft toffee fruits ... lots of big resiny fruits ... little bitter in background.
A nut-brown beer with a light tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and nice grassy and fruity hop notes, leading to a dry grassy and grapefruity finish where notes of toffee lingers.
This beer hits the right spot each time I drink it. Big, bold &
brazen. Drinking well below it’s abv. Pours gold with a soft white head. Complex flavours of hops, citrus &
some malt.Very fruity on the swallow with a suggestion of coriander and herbs in the aftertaste. A really good ale which could easily, mistakenly, be drunk as a session beer.
Clear amber colour, white head. Aroma of caramel/toffee, bit of chocolate. Flavour is soft toffee, nuts, light fruity, citrus, some roasted malts. Light bitter finish. A nice start of the day.
Well, I would say a ringing endorsement there :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4562669870 - 'Here is Kev, fastest milkman in the (Cheshire) West (and Chester).
Rarer than the proverbial rocking horse exhaust, the British milkman is becoming an endangered species. I fear the WWF (that’s the wildlife lot, not Hulk Hogans lot obviously!) will be listing Kev and his colleagues quite soon!
Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since poor refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The spread of the humble fridge and the aggressive discounting of supermarkets now mean that we tend to buy milk with the weekly shop and often in long lasting UHT form. Milk delivery also incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify. It also leaves delivered milk in a position where it is often prone to theft.
Kev here is in his electric milk float. Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour, although legend has it that some have been chipped to do up to 80 mph Operators. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night when diary products can be stealthily delivered.
In August 1967 the UK Electric Vehicle Association stated that Britain had more battery-electric vehicles on its roads than the rest of the world put together. On closer inspection these were in fact milk floats. Quite often their enormous batteries are charged all night in order to do a few hours of deliveries the following morning.
So, from an age when we were asked 'Are you getting enough (milk that is)?', we had 'Confessions of a milkman' and 1960's milk bars, Anthony Burgess his droogs and the Korova, our dominance of electric transport is also ebbing away.
Think on next time you reach for a couple of bricks of UHT in the Tesco Express.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is a track I seldome play, but when I do it generally goes on repeat for 3 or more hours. Its a pleasure to pair it up to one of my favourite locations, the isle of Iona, a mere rock at the foot of Mull, western Scotland.
'Peace of Iona' is a song written by Mike Scott that appears on the studio album Universal Hall and on the live recording Karma to Burn by The Waterboys. The band dates back to 1983. They play a mix of Celtic folk music with rock and roll.
The early Waterboys sound was dubbed 'The Big Music' after a song on their second album, A Pagan Place. This musical style was described by Scott as 'a metaphor for seeing God's signature in the world.' It either influenced or was used to describe a number of other bands, including Simple Minds, The Alarm, In Tua Nua, Big Country, the Hothouse Flowers and World Party, the last of which was made up of former Waterboys members.
The Waterboys have also influenced musicians such as Colin Meloy of The Decemberists Grant Nicholas of Feeder and Miles Hunt of The Wonder Stuff. Bono and The Edge from U2 are fans of the band.
The Waterboys are best known for 'The Whole of the Moon' which typifies the sound of The Big Music period. Theres much more to them than this and the 2005 live album 'Karma To Burn' is a good place to start. Tell 'em I sent you :-)
------------------------
Iona (Scottish Gaelic: Ì Chaluim Chille) is a small island in the Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland. It was a centre of Irish monasticism for four centuries and is today renowned for its tranquility and natural beauty. It is a popular tourist destination. Its modern Gaelic name means 'Iona of (Saint) Columba' (formerly anglicised 'Icolmkill').
It is one mile from Mull and has a population of just over 100. From the moment you leave the ferry, you can feel the history.
Iona was the site of a highly important monastery (see Iona Abbey) during the Early Middle Ages. According to tradition the monastery was founded in 563 by the monk Columba, also known as Colm Cille, who had been exiled from his native Ireland as a result of his involvement in the Battle of Cul Dreimhne. Columba and twelve companions went into exile on Iona, then part of the Irish kingdom of Dál Riata, and founded a monastery there.
The monastery was hugely successful, and played a crucial role in the conversion to Christianity of the Picts of present-day Scotland in the late 6th century and of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria in 635. A large number of satellite institutions were founded, and Iona became the centre of one of the most important monastic systems in Great Britain and Ireland.
Iona Abbey, now an ecumenical church, is of particular historical and religious interest to pilgrims and visitors alike. It is the most elaborate and best-preserved ecclesiastical building surviving from the Middle Ages in the Western Isles of Scotland. Though modest in scale in comparison to medieval abbeys elsewhere in Western Europe, it has a wealth of fine architectural detail, and monuments of many periods.
In front of the Abbey stands the 9th century St Martin's Cross, one of the best-preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles, and a replica of the 8th century St John's Cross (original fragments in the Abbey museum).

For the benefit of any one who has never seen a 171 calorie creme egg, it consists of a thick milk chocolate shell, housing a white and yellow filling made from egg, thick white cream, sugars and other additives. Creme Eggs are a best-selling confectionery item between New Year's Day and Easter in the UK (when sale stops). There are annual sales in excess of 200 million eggs and a brand value estimated of approximately £45 million.
They are produced by Cadbury UK in the United Kingdom, and under licence by The Hershey Company in the United States. The eggs are manufactured at the Bournville factory in Birmingham with around 1.5 million being hatched from the production line each day.
While filled eggs were first manufactured by the Cadbury Brothers in 1923, the Creme Egg in its current form was introduced in 1971.
The Cadbury Creme Egg is manufactured by making a chocolate shell in a half-egg shaped mould, which is then filled with white fondant and a dab of yellow fondant to simulate the yolk. Two mould halves are closed very quickly and cooled to allow the chocolate to set. When the moulds are opened, the eggs fall onto a conveyor which transports them, first to the foiling machines and then to the finished packing.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4521907330 - 'Its that busy time of the year, perhaps more so than Christmas.
According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Some Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday. For the Father here this can often be combined with the sacrament of confirmation with oil, so a very hectic few days of great spiritual significance.
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. A quite complex formula is used to work out when it falls based on the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (regardless of the astronomically correct date), and the 'Full Moon' is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25 each year.
Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. This reminds us that these religions (as well as Islam) is linked by common texts and traditions. There is more to link these three faiths than is commonly dug up to divide them.
Peace to you and your family, whatever your belief this Easter.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is one of my all time favourite tracks and one of Matt Johnsons finest lyrical masterpieces from the Some Bizarre record label.
Its generally the best known track on Soul Mining, 'The The's second album, released in 1983. The album version of 'Uncertain Smile' featured the piano playing of Jools Holland. Holland revealed in his 2007 biography that it is in fact two separate solos joined together. The original single used flute and sax solos played by Crispin Cioe of the Uptown Horns. The cover artwork is by Andy Johnson, Matt Johnson's brother, aka Andy Dog.
If you are unfamiliar with 'The The' checkout '45 RPM: The Singles of The The', an excellent trip through 15 or more years of the band. Hunt it down, tell 'em I sent you.
------------------------
Peeling the skin back from my eyes, I felt surprised
That the time on the clock was the time I usually retired
To the place where I cleared my head of you
But just for today, i think I'll lie here and dream of you.
I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in,
But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to SWIM AND pull you out.
A howling wind blows the litter as the rain flows,
As street lamps pour orange coloured shapes through your window,
A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes,
Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile...
I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in,
But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to swim and pull you out.

Warrington District Camera Club are looking for similar models and subjects for studio nights like this.
They are looking for interesting studio subjects for a number of future Monday night photo club nights in Grappenhall, Warrington Cheshire.
Sessions start at 7.30pm until about 9.30pm and expenses etc will be paid, as well of course subjects receiving images and prints from the session. In some cases this can be a useful additional to a portfolio etc for securing other modelling work.
They do like unusual subjects and if you are part of another group as part of an interest or hobby, please get in touch.
Over the years WDCC have had circus performers, musicians, dancers, performers, a clown, wheelchair tennis professionals, threatre / amateur theatricals group, an old woodworker and beekeeper, exotic animals keeper, hair and beauty students, bird of prey owner and numerous more unusual and standard model subjects. Male or female, old or young, if you might be interesting to photograph, WDCC would like to hear from you.

This is an old shot that I spotted while trying to dig something else out that an old friend had reminded me of. One of my most favourite portraits I have ever taken of a friend who I was on a degree course with. She now lives in Turkish Cyprus and teaches information technology (IT) at the university there.
The statue looks very bronze, although it was actually plaster. The fireplace was original, in the house situated behind where the old bus depot was in Fallowfield, on the edge of Moss Side, Manchester UK. Alexander Avenue used to terminate at the bus depot, google maps shows the depot intact, although it has now been flattened.
