Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3C4CXN4 - A gigantic mechanical bull rages over unsuspecting passengers at Birmingham's central station. In 2022, Birmingham hosted the quadrennial Commonwealth Games, introducing a massive mechanical bull during the opening ceremony. Standing 33 feet tall and weighing 2.5 tonnes, the gargantuan creature amazed many viewers before seemingly fading into oblivion.
That is, until he made a triumphant return to Birmingham in July 2023. Though the bull was to be dismantled after the games, people on social media campaigned for its preservation, helping it find a new permanent home in the city.
The raging bull was officially given the name of Ozzy, after none other than the former lead singer of Black Sabbath, who grew up in Birmingham. Unveiled by Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon and sister Jean, Ozzy the Bull stands towering above passengers at Birmingham New Street Station, a new beloved icon of the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEKH - Taken on 15 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Durham city market hall entrance, Durham Market Hall, Market Place, Durham, DH1 3NJ. The location is Durham Market Hall, Market Place, Durham, England, UK, DH1 3NJ. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. Durham Market Hall continues the tradition of covered urban markets, supporting small traders, food shopping, local services and tourism in a compact cathedral city centre. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include building, markets, historic, stalls, Market Place, buildings, welcome, city, Durham, centre, architecture, history, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED33D - The West Port is a street in Edinburgh's Old Town, Scotland, located just south of Edinburgh Castle. It runs from Main Point (the junction of Bread Street, Lauriston Street, East Fountainbridge and High Riggs) down to the south west corner of the Grassmarket. Its name derives from the fact it sloped up from the West Port, which was the only westwards exit from the city when the city walls stood, allowing one to pass through the Flodden Wall. The port (gate) itself was demolished in 1786.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35F - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

The building is now occupied by The People's Story Museum and is protected as a category A listed building
In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

This memorial is built at the site of the former Aignish Farm, the place of confrontation between the crofters and the landowners, to commemorate a phase of the highland land struggle.
The Aignish riot of 9 January 1888 was one of the most potentially disastrous confrontations of the period, especially running so soon after the Pairc deer raiders 'riot'. At the Aignish farm site a flag was unfurled to summon the people and an estimated 500 men had gathered in a short time, some with the intention of driving away all cattle and sheep from the farm.
Those animals which they did not succeed in driving into the sea they crippled by breaking their legs with clubs. Policemen and marines who arrived on the scene were pelted with stones and the raiders were only dispersed after being confronted at bayonet point by a detachment of the Royal Scots Regiment. The riot act was read out in English and Gaelic and by the end of the day 11 people were arrested and were imprisoned in nearby Stornoway. After the crowd had driven the sheep and cattle some distance they turned them back and past the farm
The iconic design reflects the idea of confrontation and takes the form of two stone structures of local stone approx 4.5 metres in height, each with a flat face from which jagged stones protrude. These pillars have curved backs and taper in towards the top. The jagged stones face each other, reflecting the aggression and tension of the event. In my opinion it is best seen at sunset or sunrise when, with a wind blowing you can hear the distant echo's of the crowd that day. It was a dark time for the Highlands and Islands and was to force more islanders to leave for ships west to the america.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5734776176 - 'For quite a few years I worked in Liverpool and got a great liking for the place. It often gets a bad press, but its changing attitudes since the 'City of Culture' celebrations a few years back.
The catholic cathedral, which stands at one end of Hope St, is older than the gothic revival anglican cathedral at the other end. Its a proper testiment to the 1960's, when concrete was king.
The cathedral's architect was Englishman Frederick Gibberd, the winner of a worldwide design competition. Construction began in 1962, and took five years. Earlier designs for a Catholic cathedral in Liverpool had been proposed in 1853, 1933, and 1953, but none was completed.
Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869\u20131944) was originally commissioned to provide a design which would be an appropriate response to the Giles Gilbert Scott-designed Neo-gothic Anglican cathedral then being built further along Hope Street. In 1956 work recommenced on the crypt, which was finished in 1958. Thereafter, Lutyens' design for the cathedral was considered too expensive and so was abandoned with only the crypt complete.
The present cathedral was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd (1908\u201384). Construction began in October 1962 and less than five years later, on the Feast of Pentecost 14 May 1967, the completed cathedral was consecrated. Soon after its opening, it began to exhibit architectural flaws. This led to the cathedral authorities suing Frederick Gibberd for \u00a31.3 million on five counts, the two most serious being leaks in the aluminium roof and defects in the mosaic tiles, which had begun to come away from the concrete ribs.
The focus of the interior is the altar which faces the main entrance. It is made of white marble from Skopje, Macedonia, and is 10 feet (3 m) long. The floor is also of marble in grey and white designed by David Atkins. The benches, concentric with the interior, were designed by Frank Knight. Above is the tower with large areas of stained glass designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens in three colours, yellow, blue and red, representing the Trinity. The glass is 1 inch (3 cm) thick, the pieces of glass being bonded with epoxy resin, in concrete frames.
It is certainly worth a visit. A contrast to the concrete of Coventry cathedral if you have ever been there.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5643718247 - 'Calton Hill is a hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, just to the east of the New Town. Views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city.
Calton Hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government, which is based at St Andrew's House, on the steep southern slope of the hill
with the Scottish Parliament Building, and other key buildings, for example Holyrood Palace, lying near the foot of the hill. The hill also includes several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory
The hill was used from ancient times as a place of execution. Most famously Major Weir the self-confessed Edinburgh warlock, was executed here. The hill was originally part of the Barony of Calton which was abolished in 1856. King James II of Scotland allowed the residents of Edinburgh to use the North West slope of the hill for 'tilts and tournaments'in 1456. This natural amphitheatre was also used for open-air theatre and saw the first performance of the early Scots play 'The Three Estaites'. The Carmelite friars (based locally at South Queensferry) built a monastery on the western side of the hill in 1518
The lands passed from the church to Lord Balmerino after the Scottish Reformation in 1560. Later in the 16th century, a leper hospital was built. In 1631 Lord Balmerino granted rights to the Trades of Calton (largely a group of shoemakers) to settle on the land and a small village was created centred on a square of open space. This square was walled off in 1718 and became officially a burial ground, evolving into what is now known as Old Calton Cemetery.
In 1669 the area was given burgh status. The royal burgh of Edinburgh bought the hill from Lord Balmerino in 1724. The area was elevated to the status of royal burgh in its own right immediately thereafter (1725). It did not officially become amalgamated with the city of Edinburgh until 1859.

Although they are as old as Auld Reekie herself, the current name dates from only just over 30 years ago.
They were renamed Playfair Steps by then Rt Hon Lord Provest, Kenneth W Borthwick on 21st April 1978. He held that post from 1977.
They were originally, The Mound Steps 1853/1972, then John Knox Way 1972/78 before Playfair steps 78 onwards. Thanks to Nicola for helping me with the history.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Scottish architects of the 19th century, designer of many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks in the New Town.
Two of his finest works are the neo-classical buildings of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy which are situated in the centre of Edinburgh, to the left of these steps. The Playfair Project completed in 2004 joined the two historic buildings with an underground link.
He was greatly inspired by a trip to Athens.
Playfair died in Edinburgh on 19 March 1857, and is buried in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery, where he designed a number of monuments for others, including Lord Jeffrey.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.
Hopefully this will be a distraction for everyone hooked today on the Kate (Catherine) Middleton and Prince William royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. In different times it might have taken place in Edinburgh and there may have been several monarchs, kings &
queens in what is now the UK. Just some food for thought. Enjoy your day if you are watching it on TV or just spending the morning buying some 3x2 at Homebase.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4804348876 - 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes - 'The Adverts' - Play this track here.
?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
In 1977, The Adverts had a top 20 hit in the UK with the song 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'. The lyrics describe an eye donor recipient realizing his new eyes came from the executed murderer. The song was later covered by the German punk rock band Die Toten Hosen. There is also a country version of the song, but that would not be allowed in my iTunes (obviously).
I was introduced to them through the John Peel radio show as a nipper. They were started in 1976 by T.V. Smith and Gaye Advert. Smith and Advert were both from Bideford, a small coastal town in Devon, and were later married. After relocating to London the two young punks recruited guitarist Pickup and drummer Driver, and The Adverts were born.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF220D - The common Bluebell, here in Lymm, Cheshire, (Hyacinthoides non-scripta to be precise) grows from bulbs and can be expected about four weeks after daffadils in Britain. By the time they appear, frosts should be receeding and days getting noticably warmer.
Other common names for it include auld man's bell, bluebell, calverkeys, culverkeys, English bluebell, jacinth, ring-o'-bells, wilde hyacint, and wood bells (probably as they appear in shaded woodland almost spontainiously.
Bees are a favourite to pollinate these plants. Their black seeds may survive long periods of time emerging after several years' absence if suitable conditions recur. The seedlings can flower in two years from seed and as a result, bluebells can quickly spread to form a carpet in suitable conditions.
In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as bluebell woods. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4538157205 - 'The patron saint of Edinburgh was St Giles, and it is to he that the building is dedicated. St. Giles was the patron saint of cripples and lepers, of which I would expect there were plenty around the middle ages when at peak popularity. These were the premier league stars of their day. His feast day is celebrated on 1st September. St Giles, a 7th century hermit (and, later, abbot) who lived in France, became the patron of both town and church was probably due to the ancient ties between Scotland and France, a popular ally in the resistance to the larger neighbour in the south.
The building has a distinctive crown steeple, popular in Scotland in medieval times. There are a few in England too and one can be seen on the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Although one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years, the High Kirk of Edinburgh was only the seat of bishops between 1635-38 and 1661-1689. Thus 'high Kirk' is a more accurate title than the common label of cathedral. Presbyterianism was born here
The building is irregular as it has been added to at various stages over the last 900 years or so. Many chapels were added, many by craft guilds or wealthy merchants of the town.
In 1559, John Knox led the Lords of the Congregation into Edinburgh and was elected minister of Edinburgh. He played a principal role in establishing the styles of worship and administration that were to be accepted throughout the country. Knox served as Minister at St Giles' until 1572. The Reformers partitioned the interior of St Giles', dividing the congregation of Edinburgh and allowing the building to be used for a wide range of purposes. During the next 300 years the building housed a police station, a fire station, a school and a coal store. The Scottish guillotine, the 'Maiden', was housed in the church, and in one corner was a prison used for 'harlots and whores'. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in the building, as did the Parliament and the Town Council.
Walking around the interior it is easy to feel that many old ghosts inhabit its fabric. James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, and Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll were just two notable men executed for a clash of faith with the ruling classes. Both are commemorated within St Giles.

Those silly English coming up to the Edinburgh festival eh?
The signs leading up to the services proclaming 'Soft Verges' always make me smile. Even funnier in french.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW0 - The ˜jewel in the crown' of Walsall town is, perhaps, its famous Victorian park, The Arboretum, and the setting of that jewel is entered through the historic gateways of a fine old Victorian building “ the main Arboretum Lodge, with its distinctive clock tower.
Once home of the legendary Walsall Illuminations festival of lights enjoyed annually by millions since its inauguration in 1952, Walsall Arboretum itself has its origins in another much more ancient activity in the town “ limestone mining.
The area now occupied by the Arboretum was originally part of Rushall until 1876. Limestone had been quarried in the vicinity since at least the late 18th century, with the Persehouse family demolishing Reynolds Hall so that the very profitable quarrying could continue. However, operations had ceased by the 1840's, leaving two great pits to fill up with water, both from the nearby stream and from springs and general drainage. The larger of the two pits, now lakes, was named Hatherton Lake by 1845, and the fine old row of houses now known as Victoria Terrace just to the north was in fact built as Hatherton Lake Villas by the early 1850's.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEKP - Taken on 15 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Durham city market hall entrance, Durham Market Hall, Market Place, Durham, DH1 3NJ. Because the subject is clearly labelled or visually distinctive, it can also work well in search-led usage where the buyer needs immediate recognition at small web-preview size.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4M0E - Traditional fairground attractions, Carousel, at Night at Edinburgh's Hogmanay, Scotland , UK gives a direct editorial record of a recognisable subject, with location, signage, architecture or everyday behaviour carrying much of the meaning. A carousel at Edinburgh's Hogmanay brings together winter light, fairground nostalgia, tourism and one of Scotland's most commercially important public celebrations. The subject suits features on seasonal events, family entertainment, city-centre crowd management, night photography, visitor spending and the blend of tradition and spectacle in New Year celebrations. Seasonal references, artificial light and winter atmosphere make it especially relevant to December and New Year picture needs. The location detail, Edinburgh, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. For buyers, the strength lies in the combination of a named subject, a lived-in setting and enough visual specificity to carry stories about how places are used, remembered, funded, visited or contested.
