Nicknamed 'DC', he competed in 15 seasons of Formula One between 1994 and 2008, taking 13 Grand Prix victories and 62 podium finishes. He was runner-up in the 2001 championship, driving for McLaren.
Coulthard began karting at the age of eleven and achieved early success before progressing to car racing in the British Formula Ford Championship and the Formula 3000 series. He first drove in Formula One with Williams in the 1994 season succeeding the late Ayrton Senna. The following year he won his first Grand Prix in Portugal, and then for the 1996 season he moved to McLaren. The move would see the price of an Edinburgh to Glasgow season ticket go up £67 to £4,267.

Rail fares usually increase every January but the hike is linked to the previous July's Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation.
The Office for National Statistics has announced the RPI rate for July was 1.6%.
Rail fares to rise despite passenger slump
This means tickets, such as standard day return tickets in the Edinburgh commuter area or all fares in the Strathclyde area, would increase by 1.6% in January.
Off-peak regulated fares are capped at 1% below RPI so would go up by 0.6%.
There has been speculation that the UK's national and devolved governments could seek to delay the 2021 rise given the effects of coronavirus and record-low passenger numbers.
Passenger watchdog Transport Focus has called for a major shake-up of rail fares to encourage passengers back to the railways following the collapse in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief executive Anthony Smith said a system that fits the way we live and travel now is needed, including flexible season tickets, carnet-style tickets and better value for money fares across the board.
'Considering the options'
A Transport Scotland spokesman said it was considering the options for future fares and tickets as part of wider recovery work in the rail industry in the wake of the pandemic.
He added: The Scottish government is committed to ensuring that rail fares are affordable for passengers and taxpayers across Scotland.
We have taken action to keep fares down and ScotRail fare are still on average, 20% cheaper than those across the rest of the UK.

85 Drygate was built in 1964, originally as a box assembly and screenprinting factory, using brick, steel and concrete. The design concentrates on existing eccentricities of the building, bearing traces of all its previous incarnations: box factory, print works, bottling plant and storage unit.
The original structure and details of the building have been preserved including the restoration of the original seven peaks of the sawtooth roof, exposed brick walls displayed behind newly installed panes of glass and the preservation of paint marks on the concrete floor, celebrating traces of the building's functional heritage.

So, after campaigning for many years, the 72-year-old Shetlander, who went to sea at 15, was delighted to see the Aberdeen Fishing Memorial being unveiled yesterday.
Two bronze figures a fisherman hauling a net brimful of fish and a woman carrying a laden basket now look down on the city's harbour.
For Rab, it's recognition that's disgracefully long overdue to the brave men and women who made such a huge contribution to life and prosperity on Scotland's shores.

He said: There's a generation in Aberdeen who don't even know what a trawler looks like. Aberdeen didn't bother to save one for posterity.
For every man at sea, he employed seven ashore net menders, ice factory workers, fishmarket porters, lorry drivers, welders, platers, engineers you name it.
And women were very important. The wives supported the trawlermen in so far as the father was never there, he was always at sea.
They were amazing lassies. You'd see them during the day in the harbourside fish-houses. Then at night we'd go up town to the dance halls and you wouldn't recognise them.
Often you'd find a trawlerman married to a fishwoman, as I am myself. My wife Wilma was a fish filleter for 40 years on and off in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Rab, who retired in Boddam, near Peterhead, launched an online petition for a memorial.
It was backed by Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald. George Adam, the city's lord provost at the time, also took up the fight and support soon came from the city council.
Funding was provided from the city's Common Good Fund and there was backing from the Fishermen's Mission.

Over four days in April, international artists gathered to brighten up the city by creating large public murals for Nuart.
Business organisation Aberdeen Inspired played a large role in developing the festival, and has now been commended at the 2017 National Business Improvement District (BID) Awards for this.
Following an online vote by members of the public and deliberation by an expert panel, it was awarded the Place Management award over five other BIDs from across the UK.
The win marks the fourth award Nuart Aberdeen has won, including helping the city toward its European BID of the Year victory in July.
Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: We're absolutely delighted that Nuart Aberdeen has been recognised with another national award against strong competition from across the UK.
The festival was very successful and sparked a huge amount of interest in the city with large crowds coming to the centre to see the street art throughout the year. Each of the fonts, created by design agency D8, features landmarks and references from the region it represents, such as Edinburgh's Calton Hill, the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, Aberdeen's Dunnottar Castle, Deep Sea World in Fife, Orkney's Viking longship, shinty in Inverness and Perth's Tay Bridge.

The roll out of the limited edition fonts comes after Tennent's extended its partnership with Scottish Rugby in a seven-figure deal.
Under the new agreement, Tennent's will continue its relationship with the Scotland national team and the country's two professional sides: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, alongside the additional title sponsorship of the Scottish domestic leagues.
The brewer will additionally take on the naming rights of the Premiership and National leagues, with the newly-formed Scottish Championship to follow in 2019/2020.

Thomas married 21 year old dairymaid Mary Mitchell. They lived in the family home in Fairview Place Uddingston.
1912 Thomas had built a new bakery at Loanhead Mansions in the main street.
1924 Archie opened a larger tearoom above the shop. The bakers shop and tearoom are still there today.
Boyd Tunnock, Archie's younger son was given the task of developing a new product. Boyd did a lot of market research and further developed the idea of using Italian meringue. He made a biscuit base, hand piped the mallow onto the base and covered in milk chocolate. The Teacake made its first appearance in 1956.

The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse-powered heritage across Scotland.
The sculptures were opened to the public in October 2013 . As part of the project, they will have their own visitor centre, and sit beside a newly developed canal turning pool and extension. This canal extension reconnects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the River Forth, and improves navigation between the East and West of Scotland.
The name was chosen by Scottish Canals at the inception of The Helix project, in 2005. The Kelpies name reflected the mythological transforming beasts possessing the strength and endurance of 10 horses
a quality that is analogous with the transformational change and endurance of Scotland's inland waterways. The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coalships that shaped the geographical layout of the Falkirk area.
According to sculptor Andy Scott, The original concept of mythical water horses was a valid starting point for the artistic development of the structures. Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now members of the British police carry two-way radios and mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that they were requested to contact the station. Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency or, in the case of the Metropolitan Police, for assistance with any matter normally within the purview of the police.
Police boxes were usually blue, with the most notable exception being Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s. In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJKD - Ross Sinclair is an artist, writer and musician who is Professor of Contemporary Art Practice within the School of Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art. He is best known for his Real Life' research project initiated when he had the words REAL LIFE tattooed in black ink across his back, at Terry's Tattoo parlour in Glasgow, 1994.

The multi part thesis submitted claims these routes as an autonomous, artist initiated project, connecting with the public at a dynamic intersection of ideas, context, performance and art-practice.
Sinclair's Real Life Project is set in a critical framework of contested paradigms of Everyday Life and The Real and acknowledges the influence of key critical thinkers over the quarter century of its development from Barthes, Baudrillard and De Certeau, through Bourriaud, Bishop and Kester and more recently in Harman, Mark Fisher and Paul O'Neill amongst many others. The project has been punctuated by the exploration of individual and collective relationships with Real Life particularly viewed through contemporary paradigms constructing society such as: Democracy, Utopia, Justice, Capitalism, Geography and History, the Church, the Bank, the State, while in parallel addressing the role of the tattooed artist himself.

by then, physicians were debating how it should best be served to infants and whether full-cream was indeed the best for them.
The storage and distribution of National Dried Milk across the country was contracted out to a company called SPD. You needed ration coupons to purchase it with, and could only get it at chemists (i.e. pharmacies.) There was a proviso, though, which housewives learned to watch for: once the tin at the store was past the Not for consumption after... date, it could be sold to anyone, off-ration, providing a windfall bonanza to the lucky shopper.

In 1860 they obtained this purpose built office on Cockburn Street in Edinburgh designed in the Scots baronial style by the architects Peddie & Kinnear.
This backed onto their original offices on the Royal Mile. The building bears the initials JR for John Ritchie the founder of the company. In 1902 they moved to huge new offices at the top of the street, facing onto North Bridge, designed by Dunn & Findlay (Findlay being the son of the then owner).
This huge building had taken three years to build and also had connected printworks on Market Street (now the City Art Centre). The printworks connected below road level direct to Waverley Station in a highly efficient production line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHRK - Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. The Gardens were created in two phases in the 1770s and 1820s following the long draining of the Nor Loch and building of the New Town, beginning in the 1760s. The loch, situated on the north side of the town, was originally an artificial creation forming part of its medieval defences and made expansion northwards difficult. The water was habitually polluted from sewage draining downhill from the Old Town. In 1846 the railway was built in the valley to connect the Edinburgh-Glasgow line at Haymarket with the new northern terminus of the North British line from Berwick-upon-Tweed at Waverley Station.
The gardens run along the south side of Princes Street and are divided by The Mound. East Princes Street Gardens run from The Mound to Waverley Bridge, and cover 8.5 acres (34,000 m2). The larger West Princes Street Gardens cover 29 acres (120,000 m2) and extend to the adjacent churches of St. John's and St. Cuthbert's, near Lothian Road in the west.
The Gardens are the best known park in Edinburgh, having the highest awareness and visitor figures for both residents and visitors to the city. Various concerts and other events are held at the Ross Bandstand including the Festival Fireworks Concert, Men's Health Survival of the Fittest, and during the city's Hogmanay celebrations.

The present theatre's location is Edinburgh's longest continuous theatre site, for there has been a theatre in that location since 1830. From being Dunedin Hall, the Royal Amphitheatre, Alhambra Music Hall, the Queen's Theatre, Pablo Fanque's Amphitheatre, and Newsome's Circus, the site became the Empire Palace Theatre, the first of the famous Moss Empires' chain, opening on 7 November 1892.
Designed by the great British theatre architect, Frank Matcham, (who built the London Coliseum, among others) its décor was lavish, with elephants with Nubian riders, nymphs and cherubs in abundance on the plasterwork, and it seated 3000 people on four levels.

A grand building at the corner of the High Street and George IV Bridge in central Edinburgh, Midlothian County Buildings is today an anachronism, the City of Edinburgh having been administratively carved off from its Midlothian hinterland in 1975.
This B-listed edifice was completed in 1905 by architect J. Macintyre Henry (1852 - 1929). Richly decorated pediments face north and west, supported on Ionic columns. On the rear elevation, facing St. Giles Kirk, is a notable frieze by W. Birnie Rhind (1853 - 1933), with reliefs representing the industries of Midlothian at the time
agriculture, fishing and mining. It has been criticised as a pastiche, 'weakly Classical' or 'flabby Palladian', but it acknowledges its historical surroundings which is more than could be said for its extension, built opposite in 1968 and connected by a tunnel running beneath George IV Bridge. This extension was by Sir Robert Matthew (1906-75) in his modern-vernacular style but has now thankfully been demolished.
After 1975 the building became the Lothian Regional Council Chambers but, after Lothian Region was dismantled in 1996, the building no longer had a purpose. It was taken on by Edinburgh City Council and, with the need for a temporary home for the new Scottish Parliament in 1999, it was pressed into use as office space and the visitor centre until 2004.
Inside there is a marble pilastered entrance hall, with a fine plasterwork ceiling. Beyond is grand stairway with a wrought-iron balustrade featuring winged ladies. On the first floor is a galleried and arcaded hall and the fine tunnel-vaulted council chamber, with walnut panelling and Corinthian pilasters.

Clickimin Broch is situated on the south shore of the Clickimin Loch, three-quarters of a mile south-west of Lerwick on the Lerwick-Sumburgh road. It sits on a small promontory jutting into the loch. It is one of the best preserved broch sites in Shetland.
The broch has an external diameter of around 20 metres and an internal diameter of around 9 metres. It is surrounded by a stone-walled fort consisting of a blockhouse and ringwork. The blockhouse is a free-standing drystone gateway set just within the entrance to the fort. Access to the broch is achieved via the entrance on the western side. The entrance passage may have had a guard cell, now blocked up, on the right side, just inside the door jamb. The interior of the broch has two cells within the walls at ground-level. Excavations have revealed the postholes for internal timber buildings and in the 19th century there were said to have been radiating stone piers visible. Excavations have revealed the postholes for internal timber buildings and in the 19th century there were said to have been radiating stone piers visible. 'Prince Charles and the City Beat Band' recorded three albums on Virgin Records from the early to mid 80's, and achieved their biggest successes on the European charts. Charles Alexander fronted the group as the lead singer and multi instrumentalist. The futuristic wind synthesizer called the 'Lyricon' was the instrument that made his brand of next generation p-funk unique, and the group's sound incorporated many of the devices that would propel rap music to the forefront of the American music scene.
My introduction to them was via a 12' single Karen a friend from Uni let me borrow. From the first play I was hooked. Give this a listen, if you have any soul leanings I think you may like this.

However, the metaphor was first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres. It was famously uttered by seventeenth-century scientist Isaac Newton. British scientist Stephen Hawking also wrote a bestselling book called 'On the Shoulders of Giants' based on Newton's quotation.
Also of course the quotation can also be found on many British Sterling two pound coins. The British two pound (\u00a32) coin was first issued as a commemorative coin in 1986 to celebrate the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Six further commemorative issues followed between 1989 and 1996. These coins did not circulate in large numbers.
After a review of the UK coinage, it was decided that a general-circulation \u00a32 coin was needed, and a new bi-metallic design was issued in 1998 (dated 1997). There is an urban myth about the coin is that putting it in the freezer overnight causes the cupro-nickel centre to pop out, a claim which had been true of some early mintings of the similarly bimetallic Canadian 2 dollar coin.
Due to the coin being bi-metallic it is difficult to reproduce. Most counterfeits that have been produced have a painted outer ring which soon wears off, and are easy to detect and deface. I have had one and they are b**gers to get rid off.

The distillery, which was formerly known as Ledaig, was founded in 1798 and has changed hands several times, having undergone a number of periods of closure. The only distillery on Mull, it is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, a subsidiary of Distell Group Limited of South Africa. Its main product, Tobermory single malt, is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig.
The Tobermory Single Malt is distilled from unpeated malted barley and matured in oak casks for at least ten years. A heavily peated whisky is also produced, but in small quantities, named Ledaig after the original distillery name. The malts are used in a number of blends including Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The water for the distillery comes from a private loch near to the Mishnish lochs. The branding had been confused under previous owners, with the Tobermory brand being used for both a single malt and a blended whisky.
Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing a million litres of spirit a year. It uses a traditional copperdomed cast iron mash tun, four washbacks made of Oregon pine, and four spirit stills. The whisky is matured in both former bourbon whiskey and sherry casks. Maturation takes place at the distillery at Deanston.

So I have not retired just yet. cannot wait until about 2015 when I may win (\u00a325) again. Fingers crossed! Aparently one in three britains have some bonds so you may have some stashed away yourself.
The premium savings bonds are a bit nostalgic for the British and started in the 1950's. I have \u00a32 of bonds that my parents bought for me in the 1960's.
It could have been one of those that won here, or a few more recent ones I got on-line, I will never know.
Still a cheque is as good as money for the moment. I better rush to teh bank before 11 March 2010 and get it paid in.
The bonds are drawn at random by the 4th generation ERNIE computer. This uses thermal noise in transistors as its source of entropy for generating random bond numbers. The original ERNIE used a gas neon diode. In each case the randomness of electrons and natural unpredictable variance of the physical processes involved mean that systematic trends and similar cumulative effects that affect any pseudorandom number generator are reduced greatly, if not eliminated.
ERNIE's output is independently tested each month by an independent actuary appointed by the government and the draw is only valid if the output passes tests that indicate it is statistically random. In case you were wondering.
With recent reduction in interest rates, an investment in the Irish Lottery bonus ball at Paddy Power might be a better bet for a huge retirement pot.

Construction of the building commenced in June 1999 and the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) held their first debate in the new building on 7 September 2004. The formal opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 October 2004. Enric Miralles, the Spanish architect who designed the building, died before its completion.
From 1999 until the opening of the new building in 2004, committee rooms and the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament were housed in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland located on The Mound in Edinburgh. Office and administrative accommodation in support of the Parliament were provided in buildings leased from the City of Edinburgh Council. The new Scottish Parliament Building brought together these different elements into one purpose-built parliamentary complex, housing 129 MSPs and more than 1,000 staff and civil servants.
From the outset, the building and its construction have been controversial. The choices of location, architect, design, and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public. Scheduled to open in 2001, it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of £414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between £10m and £40m. A major public inquiry into the handling of the construction, chaired by the former Lord Advocate, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, was established in 2003. The inquiry concluded in September 2004 and criticised the management of the whole project from the realisation of cost increases down to the way in which major design changes were implemented. Despite these criticisms and a mixed public reaction, the building was welcomed by architectural academics and critics.
