Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MX9FPP - Concept image showing Scottish banknotes and coins beside a lit domestic gas hob, illustrating the pressure of rising household energy costs on home budgets in Scotland and across the UK. The photograph links everyday cooking, heating and fuel use with consumer finance, inflation, cost of living pressures, utility bills, and the squeeze on disposable income faced by households during periods of high gas prices. Visible cash and currency emphasise budgeting choices, bill payment worries, and the trade off between essential spending and other family costs such as food, rent, mortgage payments, transport and childcare. The blue gas flame provides an immediate visual shorthand for domestic energy consumption, meter usage, tariff changes, supplier charges and the wider debate about affordability, fuel poverty and energy market volatility. This image is suitable for editorial use on stories about gas bills, household finances, inflation, consumer hardship, personal budgeting, winter heating worries, energy affordability, Scottish consumers, British utility costs, and the continuing impact of higher fuel prices on ordinary homes. It also works as a broader symbol of economic stress, financial resilience, money management, cash flow pressure, and the challenge for low and middle income households trying to balance essential utilities against stagnant wages and wider rising living costs. The Scottish notes make the picture especially useful for regional coverage involving devolved policy, Scottish consumers and the domestic effect of energy pricing. Because the money is shown in physical form rather than on a screen, the image underlines the kitchen table reality of budgeting, where higher utility charges are felt as pounds and pence leaving the household purse. It is well suited to reporting on arrears, debt advice, payment support, winter resilience, fuel poverty, and the real world impact of gas price rises on everyday family finances.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K9BHW4 - An independent Scotland's economy
Scotland is well-placed to become an independent country, with its own devolved parliament, government and institutions already in place.
An independent Scotland would have full control over tax and spending (fiscal policy) so that decisions about the economy would be based on what's best for Scotland.
With full economic powers, future Scottish Governments could develop policies that strengthen the economy and make Scotland better placed to respond to global challenges.
Scotland's fiscal policy would be supported by its own independent institutions like the Scottish Fiscal Commission and an independent Scottish Central Bank and Debt Management Office.
Read more detail in the economy paper.
Currency
As soon as practicable, Scotland would move to its own independent currency, the Scottish pound.
Until then, the pound sterling would remain Scotland's currency. This would provide continuity for people and businesses.
In that initial phase people who live in Scotland would continue to be paid in sterling, get their pensions in sterling and buy goods and services in sterling. Businesses would continue to trade in sterling.
A new, independent Scottish Central Bank would advise on when the Scottish pound should be introduced, with the final decision made by the Scottish Parliament.
After the introduction of the Scottish pound, the Scottish Central Bank's role would expand to manage the new currency. The Bank's role would be focused on ensuring financial stability.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBET66 - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the United Kingdom and its related territories, denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £
ISO 4217 currency code GBP [Great Britain pound]).
Sterling banknotes are official currency in the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and Tristan da Cunha in St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. One pound is equivalent to 100 pence. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England has a monopoly of banknote issuance in England and Wales but, for historic reasons, three banks in Scotland and four banks in Northern Ireland are permitted to issue their own currency “ but the law requires that the issuing banks hold a sum of Bank of England banknotes (or gold) equivalent to the total value of notes issued. Versions of the pound sterling issued by Crown dependencies and other areas are regulated only by local governments and not the Bank of England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AR75PB - The royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, or the Royal Arms for short, is the official coat of arms of the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. These arms are used by the Queen in her official capacity as monarch of the United Kingdom. Variants of the Royal Arms are used by other members of the British royal family, by the British Government in connection with the administration and government of the country, and some courts and legislatures in a number of Commonwealth realms. In Scotland, there exists a separate version of the Royal Arms, a variant of which is used by the Scotland Office and the Judiciary. The arms in banner form serve as basis for the monarch's official flag, known as the Royal Standard.
In the standard variant used outside of Scotland, the shield is quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England
in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland
and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is a statant guardant lion wearing the St Edward's Crown, himself on another representation of that crown. The dexter supporter is a likewise crowned English lion
the sinister, a Scottish unicorn. According to legend a free unicorn was considered a very dangerous beast
therefore the heraldic unicorn is chained, as were both supporting unicorns in the royal coat of arms of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFA3 - Robert Burns (25 January 1759 “ 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire and the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach[1] though now often in an artificial casing instead. According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR5WE - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the British Islands (encompassing the United Kingdom and the British Crown dependencies), denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £
ISO 4217 currency code GBP). One pound is equivalent to 100 pence.
The pound is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the Crown dependencies of Britain. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England does act as a central bank in that it has a monopoly on issuing banknotes in England and Wales, and regulates the issues of banks in Scotland.
The issuing of retail-bank banknotes in Scotland is subject to the Bank Charter Act 1844, Banknotes (Scotland) Act 1845, the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928, and the Coinage Act 1971. Pursuant to some of these statutes, the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs publishes an account of the Amount of Notes authorised by Law to be issued by the several Banks of Issue in Scotland, and the Average Amount of Notes in Circulation, and of Bank of England Notes and Coin held in the London Gazette. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4M1M - The Scotsman is a Scottish compact newspaper published from Edinburgh. It was a broadsheet until 16 August 2004. The Scotsman Publications Ltd also issues the Edinburgh Evening News and the Herald & Post series of free newspapers in Edinburgh, Fife, and West Lothian.
As of 2014, it had an audited print circulation of 27,208, down from 35,949 in 2012 (Jan - Aug average) and 42,581 in August 2011. Scotsman.com websites, including the news site, job site, property site, mobile site and others have an average of 119,672 visitors a day.
In 1860 they obtained this purpose built office on Cockburn Street in Edinburgh designed in the Scots baronial style by the architects Peddie & Kinnear.
This backed onto their original offices on the Royal Mile. The building bears the initials JR for John Ritchie the founder of the company. In 1902 they moved to huge new offices at the top of the street, facing onto North Bridge, designed by Dunn & Findlay (Findlay being the son of the then owner).
This huge building had taken three years to build and also had connected printworks on Market Street (now the City Art Centre). The printworks connected below road level direct to Waverley Station in a highly efficient production line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35Y - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
John Martyn, OBE (who passed away 29th January 2009), was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as 'an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues.
This excellent track is from 'Solid Air', a folk jazz album released in 1973. Its a truly classic album and sounds as fresh as a chill-out album even today. 'Solid Air', the title track, was dedicated to a friend of Martyn's, Nick Drake. Drake died of an antidepressant overdose 18 months after the album was released.
Martyn said of the track 'Solid Air' 'It was done for a friend of mine, and it was done right with very clear motives, and I'm very pleased with it, for varying reasons. It has got a very simple message, but you'll have to work that one out for yourself.'

Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. 'The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as 'one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it'. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X9K - Lerwick (Old Norse: Leirvik
Norn: Larvik) is the main town and port of the Shetland archipelago, Scotland. Shetland's only burgh, Lerwick had a population of about 7,000 residents in 2010
Centred 123 miles (200 km) off the north coast of the Scottish mainland and on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland, Lerwick lies 211 miles (340 km) north-by-northeast of Aberdeen
222 miles (357 km) west of the similarly sheltered port of Bergen in Norway
and 228 miles (367 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. One of the UK's coastal weather stations is situated there, with the local climate having small seasonal variation due to the maritime influence. Being located further north than Saint Petersburg and the three mainland Nordic capitals, Lerwick's nights in the middle of summer only get dark twilight and winters have below six hours of complete daylight.
Lerwick is a name with roots in Old Norse and its local descendant, Norn, which was spoken in Shetland until the mid-19th century. The name Lerwick means bay of clay. The corresponding Norwegian name is Leirvik, leir meaning clay and vik meaning bay or inlet. Towns with similar names exist in southwestern Norway (Leirvik, Lervik) and on the Faroe Islands (LeirvÃk)
Evidence of human settlement in the Lerwick area dates back to the Neolithic (4000“2500 BC) and the Bronze Age (2500“800 BC) known from paleoenvironmental records for human activity and the recovery of artefacts, including a stone axe head submerged in Bressay Sound. Iron Age (800 BC “ AD 800) settlement is known at the Broch of Clickimin, which was constructed as early as 400 BC. The first settlement to be known as Lerwick was founded in the 17th century as a herring and white fish seaport to trade with the Dutch fishing fleet. This settlement was on the mainland (west) side of Bressay Sound, a natural harbour with south and north entrances between the Shetland mainland and the island of Bressay.

City Beat Band ' - Play this track here.
?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Prince Charles and the City Beat Band' recorded three albums on Virgin Records from the early to mid 80's, and achieved their biggest successes on the European charts. Charles Alexander fronted the group as the lead singer and multi instrumentalist. The futuristic wind synthesizer called the 'Lyricon' was the instrument that made his brand of next generation p-funk unique, and the group's sound incorporated many of the devices that would propel rap music to the forefront of the American music scene.
My introduction to them was via a 12' single Karen a friend from Uni let me borrow. From the first play I was hooked. Give this a listen, if you have any soul leanings I think you may like this.
To check out his style from this era, track down any of the following albums:
Gang War (Solid Platinum) 1981
Combat Zone (UK Virgin) 1983
Stone Killers (ROIR) 1983 (UK Virgin) 1984
With the emergence of rap, Prince Charles disbanded his funk group and began focusing on audio engineering. After the switch, 'Prince Charles Alexander' became a multi-platinum recording engineer, mixing engineer and producer for a large client base including Mary J. Blige, the Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy, Usher, Boyz II Men, Brandy, Babyface, Sting, Aretha Franklin and many more. Sean \u201cPuffy\u201d Combs utilized the technical expertise of Prince Charles, Tony Maserati and Paul Logus as his first string mixing engineers, a move that helped to launch and sustain the Bad Boy record label for many years. Charles\u2019 accolades include more than 40 Platinum and Gold certifications from the RIAA, 3 Grammy wins and 7 Grammy nominations from NARAS and a Victoire de la Musique (the French equivalent of a Grammy).

Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latin: nanos gigantium humeris insidentes) is a Western metaphor meaning 'One who develops future intellectual pursuits by understanding the research and works created by notable thinkers of the past'
a contemporary interpretation.
However, the metaphor was first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres. It was famously uttered by seventeenth-century scientist Isaac Newton. British scientist Stephen Hawking also wrote a bestselling book called 'On the Shoulders of Giants' based on Newton's quotation.
Also of course the quotation can also be found on many British Sterling two pound coins. The British two pound (\u00a32) coin was first issued as a commemorative coin in 1986 to celebrate the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Six further commemorative issues followed between 1989 and 1996. These coins did not circulate in large numbers.
After a review of the UK coinage, it was decided that a general-circulation \u00a32 coin was needed, and a new bi-metallic design was issued in 1998 (dated 1997). There is an urban myth about the coin is that putting it in the freezer overnight causes the cupro-nickel centre to pop out, a claim which had been true of some early mintings of the similarly bimetallic Canadian 2 dollar coin.
Due to the coin being bi-metallic it is difficult to reproduce. Most counterfeits that have been produced have a painted outer ring which soon wears off, and are easy to detect and deface. I have had one and they are b**gers to get rid off.
