In a letter to the council in January 1899 Monks stated that:
My dear Mr. Mayor, The tri-centenary of the birth of Oliver Cromwell occurs on the 26th April of this year and it occurs to me as a fitting opportunity to offer my fellow townshipmen a fine statue of a remarkable man, to be placed in the front of the Town Hall or in the Gardens behind, as the council may determine. I know there are different estimates of the character of this statesman, but I think all will admit the wisdom and courage with which he guided the affairs of state at a critical time in the history of the country, and how nobly he made sacrifices to preserve the religious and political liberties of her people. I shall be obliged if you will allow me to make the offer through you to the Council, and if accepted I will arrange to deliver it to you as early as convenient.
The acceptance and erection of the statue was vigorously debated by Warrington Town Council

These are his thoughts on Citizen Firefighter.
Citizen Firefighter was conceived primarily to celebrate the fire service. But it is also an attempt, through a recognition of their work, to reclaim the political and civic space associated with the historical form of the public statue. While maintaining the clear, formal language of the past, the content and narrative of this new work differs in many ways from the historical tradition, and it is precisely through this rupture between Citizen Firefighter and what is generally understood to be the impact of historical works that we can begin to assess what kind of relationship now exists between citizen and resident, between statue and sculpture. The space opened up in this way creates the possibility of a dialogue of historical and sociological change.
Through the work's symbolism, Citizen Firefighter appears to rekindle the onlooker's reflexes when faced with a nineteenth-century public monument. It differs, however, by both the neutrality of its stance and by the prominence given to the breathing apparatus, which has a democratising effect on human identity. The generic or quotidian aspect of the figure is further accentuated by a reductive treatment of form, in which all naturalist or realist traits have been suppressed. Subtraction peels away pathos, creating enough critical distance to enable the viewer to consider the complex charge inherent in the way the subject is presented. In this way the meaning of the monument itself is left partially open, thus creating a space that can be reinvested by the onlooker

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN0YM - Ex-trawlerman Rab Youngman felt a once-proud fishing port like Aberdeen deserved a permanent shrine to its seafaring souls.
So, after campaigning for many years, the 72-year-old Shetlander, who went to sea at 15, was delighted to see the Aberdeen Fishing Memorial being unveiled yesterday.
Two bronze figures ? a fisherman hauling a net brimful of fish and a woman carrying a laden basket ? now look down on the city's harbour.
For Rab, it's recognition that's disgracefully long overdue to the brave men and women who made such a huge contribution to life and prosperity on Scotland's shores.

He said: There's a generation in Aberdeen who don't even know what a trawler looks like. Aberdeen didn't bother to save one for posterity.
For every man at sea, he employed seven ashore ? net menders, ice factory workers, fishmarket porters, lorry drivers, welders, platers, engineers? you name it.
And women were very important. The wives supported the trawlermen in so far as the father was never there, he was always at sea.
They were amazing lassies. You'd see them during the day in the harbourside fish-houses. Then at night we'd go up town to the dance halls and you wouldn't recognise them.
Often you'd find a trawlerman married to a fishwoman, as I am myself. My wife Wilma was a fish filleter for 40 years on and off in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Rab, who retired in Boddam, near Peterhead, launched an online petition for a memorial.
It was backed by Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald. George Adam, the city's lord provost at the time, also took up the fight and support soon came from the city council.
Funding was provided from the city's Common Good Fund and there was backing from the Fishermen's Mission.

Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a ?65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the ?10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.

The scheme would have seen a new granite-clad concrete base of 86cm (34in) added to the memorial to raise its overall height.
However, the council has reconsidered its decision after an online petition called Save Wellington's Cone, which gathered thousands of signatories in just a few hours, and a Facebook campaign which had planned a rally in support of the cone.
A council spokesman said: The wording of the report was appalling and the leader of the council (Gordon Matheson) has instructed officers to withdraw the planning application.
The petition stated: The cone on Wellington's head is an iconic part of Glasgow's heritage, and means far more to the people of Glasgow and to visitors than Wellington himself ever has.
Raising the statue will, in any case, only result in people injuring themselves attempting to put the cone on anyway: does anyone really think that a raised plinth will deter drunk Glaswegians?

Its modern replacement was built to the south-east of the original location to aid traffic. The town's tron was placed on the steeple of the town house in the 1550s. The area now known as 'Merchant City' was developed from the 1750s onwards. Residences and warehouses of the wealthy merchant tobacco lords (who prospered in shipping and, amongst other things, tobacco, sugar and tea) were built in the area. The district west of the High Street formed the historic backbone of the city, the development of what is now known as with wide, straight streets, vistas, and squares, marked the beginning of a process of aspirational residential movement westwards that would continue throughout the 19th century and into the 20th with the development of Blythswood Hill, Hillhead and the West End of Glasgow.

The name of the new owner, Jigsaw, is at the top of the doorway. Above the doorway is a statue of Saint Mungo and other sculptures designed by George Frampton and carved by William Shirreffs. Built in the 1890s to the plans of architect J J Burnet, the single-storey banking hall was added to the front of the existing Glasgow Savings Bank which had been designed by his father John Burnet and erected thirty years earlier. It is built to a Baroque-inspired design, with fine ornate ironwork in the main doors.
Founded in 1836, the Glasgow Savings Bank grew to be the largest of its type in the country. Various amalgamations resulted in its network of branches being included in the West of Scotland Trustee Savings Bank in 1974 and TSB Scotland in 1983. Following a stock exchange flotation in 1986, it became TSB Bank Scotland plc in 1989 and merged with Lloyds Bank in 1995.
Lloyds TSB Group quit the building in 1999. It remained unoccupied until the summer of 2002 when Emporio Armani opened a fashion showroom. Since 2003 it has been occupied by the Jigsaw fashion chain.

The Herring Girls played an important part in The history of Stornoway.
The Fishing Industry afforded many families a wage and indeed a living.
The work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery has been well documented, with plays being written and performed , poetry being written about these brave hardworking girls. Here is a brief summary of the herring girls.
In Stornoway the work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery is commemorated by two statues, one on North Beach Quay and the other on South Beach Quay.
The picture above shows a herring girl working gutting a herring. The girl has a barrel similar to those that were used in the herring industry throughout the 19th and 20th century.
The Herring Industry in 1914
In 1914 a combined 20% of the Isle of Lewis' population (3,000 women and another 1,600 men) were involved in the herring industry.In the early 20th century the fishing ports of Scotland were packed with women who worked the summer gutting herring, before heading down the east coast of England following the fishing.
For the women of that time there wasn't much work available and even though being a herring girl was jolly hard work - with long long hours and very low wages many of the girls loved the company of the other girls and looked forward to the start of the herring season. Although many of the girls working in the Stornoway herring industry - came from The Islands - they also worked alongside girls who came from all over Scotland - these girls travelled from port to port - wherever the work was on offer.

A draped standing figure of Alexander holding onto his horse Bucephalus which is unharnessed and rearing. The satue is on a corniced, bow-ended ashlar plinth. It was moved from St Andrew Square to its present site in 1916.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9C - Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.
