Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBTEG2 - Stephen William Hawking CH CBE FRS FRSA (8 January 1942 “ 14 March 2018) was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.
Hawking was born in Oxford into a family of doctors. Hawking began his university education at University College, Oxford in October 1959 at the age of 17, where he received a first-class BA (Hons.) degree in physics. He began his graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge in October 1962, where he obtained his PhD degree in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, specialising in general relativity and cosmology in March 1966.
In 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease) that gradually paralysed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device”initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.
Hawking's scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Hawking achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book A Brief History of Time appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking was a Fellow of the Royal Society.

and high-value polymers. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. Werner Baumann has been CEO since 2016.
Founded in Barmen in 1863 as a dyestuffs factory, Bayer's first and best-known product was aspirin. In 1898 Bayer trademarked the name heroin for the drug diacetylmorphine and marketed it as a cough suppressant and non-addictive substitute for morphine until 1910. Bayer also introduced phenobarbital
prontosil, the first widely used antibiotic and the subject of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Medicine
the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
and Yaz (drospirenone) birth control pills.
In 1925 Bayer was one of six chemical companies that merged to form IG Farben, the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. The Allied Control Council seized IG Farben after World War II, because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust, which included using slave labour from concentration camps. It was split into its six constituent companies in 1951, then split again into three: BASF, Bayer and Hoechst.
Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations. In 2006 the company acquired Schering, in 2014 it acquired Merck & Co.'s consumer business, with brands such as Claritin, Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's, and in 2018 it acquired Monsanto, a leading producer of genetically engineered crops, for $63 billion. Bayer CropScience develops genetically modified crops and pesticides.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGHB30 - Vast white steel structure of the Lovell Telescope rises above the landscaped grounds of Jodrell Bank Observatory in Lower Withington, Cheshire, on a bright day with strong summer sunshine and a clear blue sky. Visitors walking beneath the giant radio dish provide a sense of scale, while mature trees frame one of Britain's most recognisable scientific landmarks.
Completed in 1957, the fully steerable 76-metre telescope was conceived by physicist and radio astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell. It was the world's largest steerable radio telescope when built and became an emblem of postwar British science and engineering. The instrument famously tracked the carrier rocket used to launch Sputnik 1 and later contributed to space-mission tracking, pulsar research and observations of radio waves from distant astronomical objects.
The telescope remains part of the University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics and the UK-wide e-MERLIN radio telescope network. Jodrell Bank was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 in recognition of its pioneering role in the development of radio astronomy.
The photograph has added editorial relevance following reports in July 2026 that funding for scientific operations at Jodrell Bank is to be withdrawn. Unless replacement support is secured, observations using the Lovell Telescope and associated facilities could end in April 2028. The threat has prompted concern about the loss of national research capability, specialist employment, training opportunities and the continued scientific use of an internationally important heritage structure. The reported funding decision concerns research operations and should not automatically be described as the closure of the separate public visitor attraction.

Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.

For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1CC - Giant Lovell Telescope dominates the landscape at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Lower Withington, Cheshire, photographed beneath heavy storm clouds with green lawns and trees framing its immense white steel structure. The dramatic weather gives the view added symbolism following reports in July 2026 that the scientific facility could lose the funding needed to continue its astronomical work.
Completed in 1957, the fully steerable 76-metre radio telescope was conceived by physicist and radio astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell and engineered with Sir Charles Husband. Its vast parabolic dish collects faint radio waves from space, allowing astronomers to study pulsars, galaxies, stars and other cosmic phenomena. It became a recognised symbol of British science, engineering and postwar technological ambition. The telescope also played an important role in the early Space Race, including tracking Sputnik and monitoring pioneering space missions.
Jodrell Bank remains a working research observatory operated by the University of Manchester and is associated with the e-MERLIN network of radio telescopes. The Lovell Telescope is Grade I listed, while the observatory was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 for its exceptional contribution to radio astronomy.
Reports state that UK Research and Innovation plans to withdraw the observatory's annual £2.8 million support following wider Science and Technology Facilities Council budget pressures. Unless alternative finance is secured, scientific observations at Jodrell Bank are expected to cease on 1 April 2028. The prospect has prompted concern over the loss of important research capability, specialist jobs, training for future astronomers and the continuing scientific use of one of Britain's best-known technological landmarks. The public visitor operation is separate from the threatened research funding, so the reported risk should not automatically be described as the immediate closure of the attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDB6 - A police box is a British phone.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>telephone kiosk or callbox located in a public place for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone is located behind a hinged door so it can be used from the outside, and the interior of the box is, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers.
Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now British police officers carry two-way radios and/or mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that he/she was requested to contact the station.[2]:2 Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency.
British police boxes were usually blue, except in Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s.:13 In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book and a first aid kit.:14 Today the image of the blue police box is widely associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a 1960s British police box. In the context of a TARDIS, the image of the blue police box is a trademark of the BBC.
