Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHF4 - Like many areas across the country, Greater Manchester has illegal levels of air pollution on some local roads. Poor air quality affects everyone's health, particularly the most vulnerable people in society. That includes deprived communities, children, elderly people and those with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. It contributes to nearly 1,200 premature deaths in Greater Manchester every year.
We're committed to cleaning up the air our residents breathe. We plan to do this in a way that encourages a change to cleaner vehicles without putting jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk.
Why no Clean Air Zone?
You might have seen signs for a Clean Air Zone on our roads. That's because our first Clean Air Plan included plans for a Greater Manchester-wide category C charging Clean Air Zone.
But following the pandemic, government agreed that this charging Clean Air Zone would NOT be introduced on 30 May 2022.
That's because the pandemic resulted in significant vehicle supply chain issues, rising vehicle prices, and a cost-of-living crisis. The original Clean Air Plan was no longer the right solution and could have caused significant financial hardship.
At the same time, it would not have met the government's legal direction (issued before the pandemic) to tackle harmful nitrogen dioxide on local roads by 2024.
Our new investment-led plan does not include a charging-Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YGF - Ordsall Chord, also known as the Castlefield Curve, is a short railway line in Ordsall, Salford, England, which links Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road to Manchester Victoria, designed to increase capacity and reduce journey times into and through Manchester. It allows trains to run from Leeds, Newcastle and Redcar Central direct to Manchester Airport.
A chord was proposed in the late-1970s and parliamentary powers for its construction were received in 1979, but the project was cancelled. Network Rail revived the proposal in 2010 as part of its Northern Hub proposal. Funding for its construction totalling £85 million was announced in the 2011 United Kingdom budget and construction commenced in 2016. It became operational on 10 December 2017.
However its use since becoming operational has been limited as no additional capacity at Victoria, Oxford Road and Piccadilly has been built to cope with more through services
The first passenger service was at 08:40 on 10 December 2017: Manchester Victoria to Manchester Oxford Road followed by the return service continuing to Leeds.
It was envisaged that congestion at Manchester Piccadilly would reduce by a quarter, in part due to the reduced need for trains to cross the throat of the station, blocking other services. It was hoped there would be more frequent train services through Manchester.
However this has not yet materialised, particularly after the May 2018 timetable which created widespread disruption around Manchester. The Ordsall Chord's lack of use in comparison to its £100 million cost has been attributed to a lack of capacity at Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria to cope with increased 'through' services that the Chord generates.
Chief Executive of Network Rail, Andrew Haines, remarked upon the inadequacies of the infrastructure to support the Ordsall Chord as part of a review in Network Rail's operations:

Several Todmorden firms produced or maintained the machinery used in the cotton factories. Lord Bros. produced textile machinery, often building looms to their own specification. Jeremiah Jackson was also in the machine trade as textile engineers, providing dyeing, finishing, sizing and bleaching machines. Astin & Barker were millwrights producing boilers, flywheels and iron goods in the foundry. The canal bridge of 1864 by Todmorden Library was designed and built by them. A Kinghorn & Co was founded when Arthur Kinghorn broke away from Lord & Kinghorn in 1885. The firm which produced machine tools for the sheet metal industry celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1986. The Walker family over four generations had started as apprentices on the shop floor before moving to executive positions.
Here the management of Astin & Barker's stand proudly with their latest production. The photograph is taken outside their premises - once known as The Barracks - on Salford, on the morning of 7th July 1906. Later on the wagon was paraded through the town in the Lifeboat Saturday procession.
Todmorden is a market town and civil parish in the Upper Calder Valley in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. It is 17 miles (27 kilometres) north-east of Manchester, 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Burnley and 9 miles (14 km) west of Halifax. In 2011, it had a population of 15,481.
Todmorden is at the confluence of three steep-sided Pennine valleys and is surrounded by moorlands with outcrops of sandblasted gritstone.
The historic boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire is the River Calder and its tributary, Walsden Water, which run through the town. The administrative border was altered by the Local Government Act 1888 placing the whole of the town within the West Riding.
The town is served by Todmorden and Walsden railway stations.

A former social club in Walkden that has attracted vandals since falling empty will be turned into flats after it was approved by Salford council's planning panel.
The former Longley Road social club - which has also been home to the area's Conservative club in the past - has been boarded up in recent weeks on police orders, developers told the planning panel
A speaker for the developer, Creative Property People, said the derelict building had been damaged by vandals and said their plan to install 16 flats would bring it back to life.
The council's executive member Derek Antrobus - a Labour member - said: I hate to say this but I think it will restore the Conservative club to its former glory.
Councillors voted to approve the plans to partially demolish the building and install 16 luxury flats in the space.
Developers said they had looked into re-opening the building as a pub or another commercial venture, but argued that they had received no interest.
A nearby Wetherspoons had hit the former pub's trade, he said, but argued that the local amenities in the area - such as nearby schools, parks and public transport links - made the building an ideal location for residential homes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC4119 - Ronald Gow (1 November 1897 27 April 1993) was an English dramatist, best known for Love on the Dole (1934).
Born in Heaton Moor, Stockport, Cheshire, the son of a bank manager, Gow attended Altrincham County High School. After training as a chemist, he returned to his old school as a teacher. In the late 1920s he made several educational silent films with his pupils: The People of the Axe (1926) and The People of the Lake (1928) recreated life in ancient Britain, the latter produced 'with the approval of' Sir William Boyd Dawkins
The Man Who Changed His Mind (1928) was a Boy Scout adventure with a cameo from Robert Baden-Powell
The Glittering Sword (1929) was a medieval parable about disarmament.
Writing occupied his spare time during his years as a schoolmaster, and he wrote several plays for the BBC. At the age of 35 he had his first professional production, in London and New York, with Gallows Glorious (1933), a play about the American slavery abolitionist John Brown.
In 1934 he wrote Love on the Dole, based on Walter Greenwood's novel about unemployment in Salford during the Great Depression. The play was a huge success. Wendy Hiller played the lead, and also made her first film appearance in the Gow-scripted Lancashire Luck.
In 1937 Hiller and Gow married. They later moved to Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, where they raised two children, Ann (19392006) and Anthony (b. 1942). He lived with Hiller at their home, Spindles, until his death in 1993. He continued writing plays into his eighties, providing material for his wife in adaptations of Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1946), which was a great success while Ann Veronica (1949), adapted from the H. G. Wells novel,[1] quickly proved a commercial failure. Gow was co-credited for the book used in the musical version of Ann Veronica which premiered in 1969. His other adaptations include Vita Sackville-West's The Edwardians and A Boston Story (1966), based on Henry James' Watch and Ward.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DFEYYW - LS Lowry Artist. He was born in Stretford, Manchester, and was educated at the Victoria Park School, but did poorly there. In 1904, he began to work for a firm of accountants. However, his only real interest, since he was a child, had been drawing
so, in the same year, he began to attend night classes at the Manchester Municipal College of Art. In 1910, he joined the Pall Mall Property Company as a rent collector, and remained with them until 1952, by which time he had risen to the post of chief cashier. The fact that he had a nine to five job was never revealed until after his death, as he had a horror of being thought of as an amateur painter. His paintings of industrial scenes achieved extraordinary popularity, to the extent that, in 1967, his painting Children Coming Out Of School (1927) was used by the Royal Mail on a postage stamp. Lowry died of pneumonia at Woods Hospital in Glossop. He never married and is thought never to have had any love affairs. He left his entire estate to a girl named Carol Ann Lowry, who had written him a fan letter because she was pleased to discover that she shared the same name as such a famous painter.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X73 - Salford Lads Club doorway on St Ignatius Walk in Ordsall, Salford, photographed with its red brick frontage, arched entrance, green doors, carved brick detail and distinctive green and gold sign. The building is one of Greater Manchester's best known music pilgrimage locations because The Smiths were photographed outside it by Stephen Wright in 1985, with the image later appearing inside the gatefold sleeve of the band's third studio album, The Queen Is Dead. The doorway has become a landmark for Smiths fans, indie music followers, Manchester music tourists and visitors recreating the famous band photograph. The club is also far more than a pop culture backdrop. It is a historic youth and community institution, opened in the early twentieth century and long associated with youth work, boxing, sport, local social provision, working class life and voluntary action in Ordsall. This red brick street corner scene has strong editorial and commercial search value for The Smiths, Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce, Salford music heritage, Manchester music history, British indie rock, post-punk, alternative music, album sleeve locations, fan culture, pop culture tourism, youth clubs, community buildings, Edwardian architecture, heritage preservation and northern working class history. The wet pavement, overcast daylight, arched windows and bold green doors give the photograph a clear documentary feel, suitable for features on cultural landmarks, music trails, Salford regeneration, local identity, community fundraising and the survival of historic voluntary sector venues. Recent reporting has highlighted financial pressure and campaigns to protect the club, giving the image added relevance as a symbol of both international music memory and everyday community resilience. With no people visible, it remains flexible for news, travel, arts, culture, social history, heritage, tourism, music journalism, educational publishing, stock photo buyer and blog use.

The club, on the corner of St. Ignatius Walk and Coronation Street, was established in 1903 as a boys' club but today welcomes people of any gender and organises activities including sports and exhibitions.
The club was opened on 30 January 1904 by Robert Baden-Powell, who later founded the Scout movement. Former members include actor Albert Finney, footballers Albert McPherson, Steve Fleet, Eddie Colman and Brian Doyle, Allan Clarke, lead singer of 1960s pop group The Hollies, and Graham Nash, guitarist, songwriter and singer with The Hollies who went on to form Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
The building gained listed status in 2003 as its tiled interior is virtually unchanged with original fittings and includes a boxing ring, snooker rooms and a gym with a viewing balcony. English Heritage said: The building is thought to be the most complete example of this rare form of social provision to survive in England. In 2007, the Manchester Evening News reported that the building, which was used for the sleeve of The Smiths album The Queen Is Dead, came third in a nationwide hunt to find the most iconic buildings in the country

He released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continues to perform regularly.
His recorded output has mainly relied on musical backing from the Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Steve Hopkins, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson, and Paul Burgess.
Clarke was born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1949. He lived in the Higher Broughton area of the city and became interested in poetry after being inspired by his English teacher, John Malone
In 1979 he had his only UK top 40 hit with Gimmix! (Play Loud). Clarke toured with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and has performed on the same bill as bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Fall, Joy Division, the Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Rockpile and New Order (including at their May 1984 Music for Miners benefit concert at London's Royal Festival Hall). His set is characterised by lively, rapid-fire renditions of his poems, usually performed a cappella. Often referred to as the bard of Salford, he usually refers to himself on stage as Johnny Clarke, the name behind the hairstyle.
Clarke appeared in a 1982 music documentary compilation Urgh! A Music War, in which he performed his poem Health Fanatic. The film featured live performances of mainstream artists (the Police, the Go-Go's, XTC, Devo) as well as more obscure bands (Pere Ubu, Invisible Girls, the Alley Cats, Athletico Spizz '80, Chelsea) using concert footage from around the world. He also starred in another 1982 film titled John Cooper Clarke - Ten Years in an Open Necked Shirt directed by Nick May and produced for the Arts Council of Great Britain and Channel 4. Somewhere between a narrative film, a series of music videos and a documentary, the film features interviews and performances by Clarke and Linton Kwesi Johnson among others.

He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.
Sadly, he spent much of the 1980s addicted to heroin, living in a 'domestic partnership' with singer and fellow addict Nico (of the Velvet Underground). He made an appearance in two UK adverts for Sugar Puffs in 1988, taking second billing to the Honey Monster. Quite often these days he takes second billing from MES and The Fall.
His set included Beasley St, the updated Beasley Boulavard (now the poem has had some investment from Urban Splash), Chicken Town, Hire Car and the brilliant 'Bongos Trousers'. This is a satirical take on the effects of U2's Bono struggling to save the world and have an audience with the pope minus his kecks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BN3853 - The Transport Act of 1968 allowed double-deck buses to be operated by one-person (up until then only single-deck buses had been permitted to be one-person-operated). This effectively sounded the death knell for the conductor and the two-man crew, as local authorities sought to put their transport undertakings on a firmer financial footing. It also brought about the rapid demise of the front-engined rear-entrance vehicle from our roads.
The last buses to be put into service by Bury Corporation were delivered in 1969. Three Leyland PDR1/1 Atlanteans (Nos. 1-3
KEN231-233G) with dual-entrance 72-seat East Lancs bodywork, six Daimler CRG/6LX Fleetlines (Nos. 92-97
KEN292-297G) with single-deck 41-seat dual-entrance East Lancs bodywork, and a Bedford J25Z10 (No. 81
KEN381G) with Duple 21-seat body (christened the 'breadvan' by crews). The Bedford was purchased specifically for the Chesham route, since the roads were deemed unsuitable for the heavier vehicles.
The idea of setting up a co-ordinated bus service in the larger cities of the country lay simmering for some years until the 1960's when it was revived. In December 1967 a white paper was published under the title 'Public Transport and Traffic'. This was later made the 1968 Transport Act, receiving the Royal Assent on October 25th 1968.
This Act created the Passenger Transport Authorities in Merseyside, Manchester, Tyneside and West Midlands. The PTA's were made up of members of local councils who drew upon the policies of each undertaking. Under their control were the Passenger Transport Executives (PTE's) who were professionals that would directly run the local services. There were to be no payments of compensation for the vehicles or premises as they were handed over to another joint local authority.
On the 1st Apr 1969 the PTA's were officially created and on the 1st November 1969 the PTE's took over the operations. At midnight on the 31st October 1969, Bury Corporation Transport Department ceased to exist

The over-crowding was eased by the relative safety of the cobbled streets. Neighbours stuck together, with the odd moonlight flit, your extended family no more than eight streets away. My terrace could never be listed, not unique enough. While in my street it would not be pebble dashed or rendered, it may be painted.
My uncle Arthur fell foul of a coat of cheap red paint, obtained through a contact at \u2018Direct Works\u2019 at number 26. Closer to pillar-box than brick red, it was hard to swallow as a true blue, paid up \u2018City season ticket owner. Still he had the last laugh. His outside loo became his winter wine chiller.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MEC - Dusk at Media City UK in Salford, Manchester, England UK
A night shot with BBC hard at work with all lights on.
MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK Metrolink station on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of Broadway Link Road.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MEF - Runner crossing the Salford Quays Millennium footbridge. is a 91.2-metre long vertical lift bridge bridge spanning the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. The bridge, which was completed in 2000, is near the terminus of the ship canal at the old Manchester Docks. It links Salford Quays to MediaCityUK and has a lift of 18 metres, allowing large watercraft to pass beneath.
The bridge features prominently on the backdrop for the BBC North West Tonight television news programme, which also shows The Lowry and MediaCityUK.
Designed by Carlos Fernandez Casado, the bridge has a main span of 91.2 metres in a Lohse Arch, with the peaks of the twin arches connected at the crown. These brace one another, resulting in greater structural rigidity. The deck is connected to the arches with vertical members, which splay outwards at an increasing angle towards the centre of the span. The sweeping arches are decorated with coloured LED lighting, while the deck is illuminated with white downlighting. Pedestrians are protected from the prevailing winds by glass sides, coloured blue at foot level and tapering in, following the angle of the arches.
