Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F06EH9 - Taken on 05 Jul 2026, this editorial sports image shows Max Verstappen of Oracle Red Bull Racing walking back along the trackside service route at Silverstone Circuit after retiring from the Formula One British Grand Prix. Wearing his dark blue Red Bull race suit and carrying his crash helmet, Verstappen appears to wave towards spectators as he passes the barriers and fencing near Stowe corner. The scene is photographed through catch fencing from a fan viewpoint, with tyre barriers, gravel trap, hard trackside surfaces and temporary event infrastructure all helping to place the image firmly within the immediate aftermath of a major race incident.
This picture works especially well as an editorial image because it captures the human moment after the incident rather than the car itself: a leading driver on foot, acknowledging the crowd after his race has ended. It pairs strongly with coverage of Verstappen spinning into the Stowe gravel trap late in the race. Formula 1's official coverage confirmed he went off into the gravel from a podium position at Stowe corner, while Reuters reported afterwards that Verstappen blamed a rear wing attachment problem, describing the issue as dangerous. Silverstone's official event material confirms the 2026 British Grand Prix setting, while the circuit's ticketing pages refer to the Landostand area associated with Lando Norris fans. Relevant themes include Formula 1 drama, race retirement, driver frustration, championship pressure, mechanical failure, trackside walkback, fan reaction, British motorsport spectacle and the emotional aftermath of elite competition. The image is also useful for broader editorial coverage of Max Verstappen, Red Bull reliability concerns, Formula One safety issues and the atmosphere of a packed race day at one of Britain's best-known motorsport venues

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EW4G2E - Brightly coloured public access defibrillator is installed within Warrington Central railway station on Winwick Street in Warrington, Cheshire. The emergency medical equipment is housed inside a prominent yellow and orange illuminated cabinet marked Life Saving Defibrillator and Heart Restarter , making it readily identifiable to passengers, railway employees and other station users during a suspected cardiac arrest.
The secure cabinet contains an automated external defibrillator, commonly abbreviated to AED, designed to analyse a casualty's heart rhythm and provide spoken or visual instructions to someone giving emergency assistance. A telephone-style keypad is mounted on the front of the enclosure, while wording beneath the unit instructs users to call 999 to obtain the access code required to open it. Symbols across the lower section illustrate the emergency sequence of calling for help, beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation and applying the defibrillator.
The installation forms part of the health, safety and emergency response provision available at a busy urban railway station. Public access defibrillators can be particularly important in transport locations where large numbers of people pass through each day and rapid intervention may be required before ambulance personnel arrive.
Visible beside the cabinet is a large Northern passenger information panel stating that train doors close 30 seconds before departure to help keep services running on time. Above the equipment are CCTV and no-smoking notices, reflecting the station's wider security and public safety arrangements. The CCTV sign advises that images are monitored for crime prevention and public and staff safety.
Warrington Central, station code WAC, is managed by Northern and serves the central Warrington area from its location close to the town centre and bus interchange. The station lies on the railway route connecting Liverpool and Manchester and provides an important regional public transpo

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution describes itself as the charity that saves lives at sea, providing lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and flood rescue. Its position on Channel small boats is that lifeboats are launched when HM Coastguard reports people may be in danger at sea, and that maritime law requires vessels aware of people in distress to take reasonable steps to assist. That mission has drawn criticism from anti-immigration campaigners and some political voices who argue that rescuing asylum seekers may encourage crossings, assist people-smuggling gangs or blur the line between humanitarian rescue and border control. Supporters counter that lifeboat crews are not immigration officers, that people in small overloaded boats are at real risk of drowning, and that the moral and legal duty at sea is to save lives first and leave asylum decisions to the proper authorities later. The controversy therefore sits between public safety, charity neutrality, border enforcement, refugee protection, people-smuggling, national politics and media-driven culture war. The image can illustrate both the practical mission of lifeboat rescue and the wider argument about whether a charity should ever discriminate between casualties based on nationality, immigration status or how they came to be in danger. The red flag adds a clear danger and warning element, strengthening use for stories about unsafe water, beach hazards, drowning prevention, coastal storms, lifeguard advice and the risks of the sea. It is a strong editorial stock image for coverage of the RNLI, small boat crossings, Channel rescues, humanitarian duty, misinformation, anti-migrant protest, public donations, charity values and the difficult business of rescue ethics

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4E - A late-summer street scene in the Paddington Basin area of West London showing pedestrians walking past a line of bright pink wayfinding signs marked Carnival , directing people towards Notting Hill Carnival. The image was taken in August under strong daylight, clear blue skies and hot, dry weather, conditions typical of a peak UK summer period.
People are dressed in light clothing suitable for warm temperatures, reinforcing the sense of heat and seasonal conditions. The temporary signage highlights how London's public realm and transport-adjacent spaces are adapted each year to manage the movement of large crowds attending one of Europe's largest street festivals.
The photograph illustrates the interaction between urban infrastructure, seasonal weather and major cultural events, and is well suited for editorial use covering topics such as summer festivals, crowd movement, urban planning, transport access, heatwaves, and the logistical impact of large-scale events in London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENAP3A - Close-up editorial image of an Alcohol Control Area warning sign in Cheshire, England, used to discourage street drinking, reduce alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and support local council or police enforcement in a public space. The sign reads You are now in an alcohol control area and warns that anyone consuming alcohol in the area may be required to cease drinking and surrender any alcohol in their possession. It also states that failure to comply is an arrestable offence and gives a maximum fine of £500. The red prohibition symbol shows bottles crossed through with a green diagonal bar, making the message visually clear for passers-by. A public-realm surveillance camera or CCTV unit is visible on a nearby pole, strengthening the themes of community safety, monitoring, safer streets, disorder prevention and local authority action around public nuisance. The image appears to have been taken beside a road or footpath, with bare trees, low winter light, street furniture and a park or open civic space in the background. It is suitable for illustrating public space protection, local government enforcement, alcohol control zones, designated public place orders, neighbourhood policing, street drinking restrictions, town-centre management, park safety, community protection, alcohol misuse, public order and the wider debate about balancing personal freedom with the protection of residents, visitors and local businesses. In England and Wales, councils and police can use powers such as Public Spaces Protection Orders or earlier alcohol control measures to address behaviours linked to anti-social behaviour. These powers do not necessarily create a blanket national ban on drinking outdoors, but they can allow authorised officers to require someone to stop drinking or surrender alcohol where local restrictions apply. The image is especially useful for editorial stories about anti-social behaviour reduction, public drinking controls, council policy, enforcement signage,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM02P - An Ask for Angela safety poster is displayed in a Wetherspoon pub, explaining how someone on a date or in an uncomfortable situation can discreetly ask bar staff for help. The poster uses the phrase Hi, I'm Angela and tells stock-photo/gotonysmith-Customers.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>customers that if they go to the bar and ask for Angela, staff will know they need assistance and can help them leave safely, call a taxi or support them without fuss. The image is a strong editorial photograph for stories about pub safety, dating safety, nightlife, personal security, safeguarding, women's safety, harassment, coercive behaviour, vulnerability in licensed premises and the responsibilities of hospitality staff. The Ask for Angela initiative began in Lincolnshire as a simple code-word campaign for people who feel unsafe on dates or nights out, and has since been promoted widely across pubs, bars, clubs and hospitality venues. The visible Wetherspoon branding, National Pubwatch logo, website address, taxi icon and #askforangela hashtag make the photograph useful for coverage of public awareness campaigns, safer streets, staff training, bystander intervention, alcohol-related risk, spiking concerns, online dating and customer welfare. It can also illustrate broader debate about the night-time economy, licensing, responsible venues, town centre safety, domestic abuse awareness and the need for discreet escape routes when people feel pressured, threatened or trapped. The poster's direct wording and bright graphic design show how safeguarding messages are made accessible in everyday public spaces. As a documentary stock image, it records a practical safety measure inside a British pub, linking hospitality, policing partnerships, customer care and public information in a simple, recognisable campaign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1AY - Exterior of Ben Macpherson's former MSP constituency office at 34 Constitution Street in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, showing Scottish Parliament and SNP signage for the Edinburgh Northern and Leith constituency. The shopfront-style political office includes window posters, public contact details and a large sign naming Ben Macpherson MSP, making it a clear documentary image of devolved representation, constituency casework and everyday local democracy in Scotland. Ben Macpherson represented Edinburgh Northern and Leith for the Scottish National Party from 2016 until April 2026, according to the Scottish Parliament's current profile, which now lists him as a former MSP. Earlier Scottish Parliament contact material during the 2026 campaign period gave this Constitution Street address as his constituency contact point. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Scottish politics, Holyrood, SNP representation, constituency offices, local casework, democratic access, Leith politics, Edinburgh public life and the relationship between elected members and residents. It can also support wider stories on the visibility of party politics in high streets, the practical role of MSP offices, public appointments, advice surgeries, housing, social security, transport, local campaigning and devolved public services. Macpherson has also held Scottish Government ministerial roles, including Minister for Social Security and Local Government and later Minister for Higher and Further Education, giving the image additional relevance for coverage of Scottish Government portfolios and SNP political careers. The Leith location adds urban context, as Constitution Street sits in an area associated with regeneration, civic change, tram development, local business and a strong political identity. Because the Scottish Parliament profile now identifies him as a former MSP, captions should be dated carefully: if the photograph was taken while the office was active, it can be described historical

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EKP0D3 - Night-time view of the illuminated Stratford High Street station sign on the Docklands Light Railway in east London. The turquoise platform nameboard, DLR roundel and passenger information panels stand out against the dark sky, creating a strong transport image centred on evening journeys, wayfinding and public safety. The angled composition also shows the station canopy, structural steelwork and nearby high-rise lights, placing the scene firmly within Stratford's urban environment.
Stratford High Street station serves the DLR branch between Stratford International and Canning Town, with direct services linking the area to destinations including Canary Wharf, Woolwich Arsenal and the Royal Docks through interchange across the network. The station opened in 2011 as part of the Stratford International extension built ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It occupies a site associated with the former Stratford Market railway station and the district's earlier industrial and goods-rail history.
The DLR forms an important part of London's integrated transport system, connecting with London Underground, Elizabeth line, London Overground, National Rail, buses and river services. Contactless payment and Oyster cards allow passengers to move between modes using a common fare system. Step-free access at DLR stations supports travel for wheelchair users, passengers with luggage, parents with pushchairs and people with limited mobility.
At night, clear signage, lighting, visible information and reliable interchange are central to passenger confidence. This image is suitable for editorial coverage of London transport, evening travel, station safety, accessible public services, Docklands regeneration, sustainable mobility, smart ticketing, urban commuting and transport investment. It also documents the role of public transport in connecting Stratford's homes, workplaces, shopping, leisure venues and sporting destinations with the wider capital

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M6G - Late-night view of the narrow pedestrian passage leading to Hackney Central London Overground station in the London Borough of Hackney. The illuminated orange station sign stands out against old brick railway arches, while the enclosed walkway recedes into darkness beneath artificial lights. A lone traveller is visible further along the route, giving the image a documentary focus on personal safety, perceived vulnerability and the experience of using urban public transport after dark. The photograph does not establish that a crime is occurring, but the confined passage, limited sightlines and quiet surroundings may reflect concerns often expressed by women, lone commuters, shift workers and late-night passengers when approaching stations or walking through isolated routes.
Hackney Central is a Zone 2 station on the London Overground Mildmay line, serving journeys towards Stratford, Highbury & Islington, Richmond and Clapham Junction. The station has access from the Amhurst Road area and from a passage beside the surviving nineteenth-century railway building near Mare Street. A second entrance on Graham Road opened in 2022 to provide more direct access, reduce congestion and improve interchange with local buses and nearby Hackney Downs station.
Transport for London advises passengers travelling at night to plan journeys in advance and use established public transport services, staffed stations, help points and available support. The image suits editorial themes involving women's safety, fear of crime, night-time commuting, urban design, station access, lighting, surveillance, public-realm improvements and safer streets. It can also illustrate debate about how architecture, visibility, maintenance and pedestrian activity influence whether a route feels welcoming or intimidating after dark. The dramatic angle, glowing orange branding and largely empty passage create a tense metropolitan atmosphere without implying wrongdoing by the person shown.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYXK - Road traffic collision aftermath on Hough Lane in Leyland, Lancashire, showing a silver Peugeot left at a steep angle with its front wheels and body partly resting on a red Honda. Broken vehicle fragments lie on the wet roadway while people stand nearby and another parked car is visible at the side of the street. The scene was photographed close to 71 Hough Lane in Leyland town centre, under overcast conditions after rain.
The unusual final position of the two vehicles creates a striking documentary image of urban road danger, vehicle damage and the consequences of a serious loss of control. It may be used to illustrate careless driving, driving without due care and attention, poor observation, distraction, misjudgement, excessive speed for the conditions or failure to maintain proper control. However, the photograph alone does not establish the cause of the collision, identify which driver was responsible or prove that any offence occurred.
Under the Highway Code, motorists must not drive dangerously, without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other road users. Careless driving is generally understood as driving that falls below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver. Examples can include failing to look properly, turning into another vehicle's path, driving too close or becoming avoidably distracted.
This editorial photograph is suitable for coverage of road safety, police investigations, insurance claims, repair costs, urban traffic incidents, driver behaviour and accident prevention. The damaged cars, scattered debris, wet surface and constrained town-centre street setting emphasise the potential financial and human consequences of a collision. It also shows how even a relatively short urban journey can result in major disruption when attention, judgement or vehicle control breaks down. The image also highlights risks to pedestrians, nearby property and other road users when vehicles leave their path

The location is Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains readable commercial or civic signage, colour, typography and street context. It can be used in editorial features, business reports, local-history writing, travel guides, public-policy explainers, educational material and SEO-led stock-photo searches needing a specific real-world image. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Keep Out, this, construction, site, sites, Construction Site, Construction Sites, warning, perimiter, dangerous, Warrington, Cheshire, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy papers and web features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CDJ - Unionist boycott ˜will not alter police reform' - more at https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-30021664.html
Police reform in Northern Ireland will not be altered if unionists boycott the board overseeing the changes, the British Government insisted today.
A Northern Ireland Office spokesman rejected claims from the anti-Good Friday Agreement Democratic Unionists that unionists could secure a better policing plan if they united and opposed the current proposals.
As the Rev Ian Paisley's party met at Stormont to consider its response to the Government's plan, the NIO said the package was ''non-negotiable''.
''The Government's position was spelt out very clearly by the Secretary of State on Tuesday,'' a spokesman said.
''The implementation plan is non-negotiable. No rethink will take place. This is the plan.''
The NIO spokesman was responding to DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson's claim that if David Trimble's Ulster Unionists agreed to join them in withholding support for the plan, the reforms could not go ahead.
Signalling his party would not take its seats on the Policing Board if the UUP did not nominate representatives, he claimed: ˜˜At the meeting we held recently with John Reid, he indicated the Government could not proceed with the plan if he could not get, on the one hand the support of either the SDLP, Sinn Fein or both, and on the other, the UUP, DUP or both.
˜˜That was the criteria operated the last time around. The Government's plans were stopped because neither the SDLP nor Sinn Fein would support it and as a result the reforms were made much more acceptable to nationalists in the SDLP.
˜˜The logical argument, therefore, is if unionists do not support this implementation plan, then it cannot succeed. The Government will have to amend it to make it more acceptable to unionists and go back to negotiations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RPCFH7 - A fire bucket is a bucket filled with water or sand which is used to prevent or extinguish fires.
Typically, fire buckets are painted bright red and have the word fire stencilled on them. Often they have a convex, protruding bottom. The rounded bottom results in a strong, directed stream of water when the water is thrown at the fire. The rounded-bottom bucket is far more efficient in launching the water at the fire than a flat bottom bucket.
Fire buckets are a low-technology method of fighting small fires. Although largely superseded by more modern forms of firefighting equipment, they retain some distinct advantages and remain the preferred method for fighting small fires in certain situations. The main advantages of fire buckets are that they are cheap, reliable, easy to use and can be quickly refilled and reinstated.
Normally, they are hung on dedicated fire bucket stands and placed in prominent positions in rooms or corridors, next to ovens or barbecues, and in government accommodation such as army barrack blocks. They are also commonly found in hyperbaric chambers.
Oil fires are resistant to water, but small fires can be effectively extinguished when the sand in the bucket is dumped on the fire to starve it of the oxygen it needs to stay alight. This method of fighting liquid fires has generally been replaced by modern foaming agents.
The sand from a fire bucket can also be used to absorb spills of flammable liquids and render them less dangerous, by reducing the risk of ignition and explosion. Fire buckets are often provided at petrol filling stations to absorb any small fuel spills

The incumbent Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner is John Dwyer, appointed in May 2021. Dwyer previously held the post from November 2012 to May 2016. From May 2016 until May 2021, David Keane held the office. The police and crime commissioner is scrutinised by the Cheshire Police and Crime Panel, made up of elected councillors from the local authorities in the police area. Before November 2012, the Cheshire Police Authority was the police governance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64MHX - This image shows the E7 navigation buoy, a weathered green light buoy positioned on the Birkenhead side of the River Mersey, with the modern Liverpool skyline visible across the water in the background. The buoy is heavily rusted, displaying layers of corrosion and patina that reflect long exposure to salt air, tides, and industrial river traffic.
Navigation buoys such as this play a critical role in maritime safety, marking shipping channels and guiding vessels through busy and often confined waterways. The River Mersey remains one of the UK's most significant estuaries, serving the Port of Liverpool and accommodating ferries, commercial shipping, and leisure craft.
The contrast between the industrial, utilitarian buoy in the foreground and the contemporary high-rise buildings of Liverpool behind highlights the changing character of the Mersey waterfront. Birkenhead and Liverpool share a long maritime and industrial history, with navigation aids forming part of the everyday but largely unnoticed infrastructure that underpins port operations.
Photographed in clear daylight under blue skies, the image works well as editorial material illustrating British maritime heritage, port infrastructure, coastal navigation, and the visual relationship between historic working waterways and regenerated urban skylines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y2F - The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a hop-on hop-off rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes which operated until 2014 and 2019 respectively), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge being to introduce a new Routemaster. Following an open design competition in 2008, Wrightbus was awarded the contract to build the bus at the end of 2009, and the final design was announced in May 2010.
The design for the new double-decker bus was inspired by the original AEC Routemaster, and features three doors and two staircases to allow accessible boarding. Unlike the AEC Routemaster, the new bus has a full front end rather than the protruding, bonneted half cab design, and a rear platform with a door that can be closed, rather than being permanently open. The layout of the new bus allows it to be operated by the driver alone. The cost of each bus was £355,000 over the four-year procurement period. The last of the 1,000 New Routemasters was delivered in December 2017

Rental electric scooters (e-scooters) are the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places within London - and even this is limited to specific boroughs. It is still illegal to use privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters on public roads.
A new form of transport
We want to explore new, environmentally-friendly forms of transport that can be used to reduce road congestion in London - but we need to make sure that any alternatives are safe for both users and non-users alike.
The current rental e-scooter trial trial is helping us test the best ways to protect the public.
Rental e-scooters have specific safety features installed. For example, they are limited to a speed of 12.5mph and have lights that are always on throughout any rental.
Our current trial of rental e-scooters is expected to run to autumn 2023. We are currently running a competitive procurement process for the new phase of London's rental e-scooter trial, and operators will be selected on their ability to meet strict safety requirements and high operating standards.
Use electric scooters legally
The London e-scooter rental scheme is approved by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters are not legal to use on public roads.
E-scooters and powered transporters may be used on private land with permission from the landowner or occupier but several laws make it illegal and/or spell out the penalties if you're caught riding one on public roads

The blue sign clearly identifies Turnstiles 1“3 and indicates ticket-only access, reflecting standard matchday crowd control procedures.
Professional rugby league stadiums rely on clearly marked entry points and controlled access to manage supporter flow, ensure safety, and comply with licensing and security regulations. The signage includes club branding and is mounted against the stadium's red-brick exterior, combining functional information with team identity.
Such turnstiles are used during Super League fixtures and other events hosted at the stadium, forming part of the wider infrastructure that supports professional sport in the UK. The absence of spectators suggests the image was taken outside match hours, allowing the signage and built environment to be documented clearly.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rugby league, sports infrastructure, stadium operations, ticketing systems, crowd management, and the organisation of professional sporting events in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNFB - This image shows an electronic roadside speed indicator sign on Bellhouse Lane in Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire. The sign displays the message Your Speed 37 followed by Slow Down , indicating that a passing vehicle is exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in this residential area.
Speed indicator devices of this type are widely used across the United Kingdom as part of traffic calming and road safety initiatives. Unlike enforcement cameras, they provide immediate visual feedback to drivers, highlighting excessive speed and encouraging behavioural change without issuing penalties. When drivers exceed the limit, warning messages such as Slow Down are triggered to reinforce compliance.
The photograph captures a car passing the sign with visible motion blur, emphasising the contrast between the digital warning and real-world driving behaviour. Installed on a tree-lined suburban road, the sign reflects local authority efforts to improve safety for residents, pedestrians, and other road users.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering road safety, speed management, transport policy, residential traffic issues, community safety schemes, and the use of technology to influence driver behaviour on UK roads.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJHF - No seatbelt a factor in 30% of UK road deaths in 2021
Some 1558 people lost their lives in crashes last year, up from 1460 in pre-pandemic 2019
New statistics released by the UK government have revealed that the number of road fatalities increased by 7% year on year in 2021, with 1558 people losing their lives in crashes.
The figure is up from 1460 deaths in 2020, when Covid-related restrictions heavily impacted levels of traffic on UK roads, but down 11% on pre-pandemic 2019, largely because numbers in 2021 were also kept down by lockdowns.
Some 128,209 casualties of varying severity occurred in 2021, which was down 16% on 2019, equating to 425 casualties per billion miles - also a drop from 2019.
The figures also revealed that pedal cyclist fatalities dropped by 21%, following an increase in 2020, associated with the pandemic. However, the number of cyclist casualties slightly increased by around 1%.
While the overall number of road deaths is down on pre-pandemic levels, the fatality rate per billion miles driven has increased, suggesting little progress is being made in making our roads safer, said Simon Williams, the RAC's spokesman on road safety.
We urge the government to publish its updated road-safety plan, which focuses on both improving car safety “ including mandating technology such as intelligent speed assist in new cars “ as well as measures to tackle poor driving standards and illegal behaviour behind the wheel.
A deeper dive into the figures showed that not wearing a seatbelt contributed to 30% of road deaths in 2021, a figure that increased to 47% at night.
The Department for Transport said that 34% of men killed in car accidents weren't wearing a seatbelt, compared with 20% of women.
The statistics also showed that people aged between 17 and 29 were the most likely to lose their life when not wearing a seatbelt, making up 40% of the overall figure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAP8 - In electrical safety testing, portable appliance testing (PAT, PAT inspection or PAT testing) is a process in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for the process is in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and any flexible cables for good condition, and also where required, verification of earthing (grounding) continuity, and a test of the soundness of insulation between the current carrying parts, and any exposed metal that may be touched. The formal limits for pass/fail of these electrical tests vary somewhat depending on the category of equipment being tested.
British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far it is reasonably and practicable) to prevent danger. Private houses are not covered by this legislation, although occupiers' liability requires householders not to deliberately expose occupants or visitors to unreasonable risks. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.
Fixed wiring in buildings
Guidance from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, published under the IEE brand) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that a competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. They suggest initial intervals for combined inspection and testing that range from three months (for construction equipment) to one year, and in many cases, longer periods for re-testing (certain types of appliance in schools, hotels, offices and shops)
Carrying out PAT
This can be done by hiring an external company to test all the electrical products in a business (someone who has had some PAT training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBHP - In late 1994, a number of people began to show symptoms of a neurological disease similar to CJD, a fatal disorder that occurs naturally in a small percentage of people, though usually only later in life. This new form of the disease would go on to be identified as variant CJD (vCJD), occurring primarily in younger people and caused through eating BSE-infected meat. The first known death from vCJD occurred on 21 May 1995, when the 19-year old Stephen Churchill died although the UK government continued to emphasise the safety of British beef and, in September 1995, concluded that there was 'insufficient evidence' to link BSE and vCJD. It was not until 20 March 1996 that Stephen Dorrell, the Secretary of State for Health announced that vCJD was caused by eating BSE-infected meat.
177 people (as of June 2014) would go on to contract and die of the disease.
Regulations and bans of British beef
When BSE was identified, the United States banned the importation of British cattle in 1989, and 499 cows who had been recently imported from the United Kingdom were killed. The United States slaughtered an additional 116 British cows in 1996.
Between December 1997 and November 1999, the British government banned the sale of beef on the bone.
A week after Dorrell's announcement, on 27 March 1996, the European Union (EU) imposed a worldwide ban on exports of British beef. The ban would go on to last for 10 years before it was finally lifted on 1 May 2006, although restrictions remained on British beef containing vertebral material and beef sold on the bone. The ban, which led to much controversy in Parliament and to the incineration of over one million cattle from at least March 1996, resulted in trade controversies between the UK and other EU states, dubbed a Beef War by media. France continued to impose a ban on British beef illegally long after the European Court of Justice had ordered it to lift its blockade, although it has never paid any fine for doing so.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT7J - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be surpassed by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
The problems were eventually solved and the trains quietly reintroduced in 1984 with much greater success. By this time the competing High Speed Train, powered by a conventional diesel engine and lacking the APT's tilt and performance, had gone through development and testing at a rapid rate and was now forming the backbone of BR's passenger service. All support for the APT project collapsed as anyone in authority distanced themselves from what was being derided as a failure. Plans for a production version, APT-S, were abandoned, and the three APT-Ps ran for just over a year before being withdrawn again over the winter of 1985/6. Two of the three sets were broken up, and parts of

It measures 3 inches diameter. The following is an extract from the Great Western Railway General Appendix to the Rule Book dated 1936: BADGES FOR PLACING OVER LEVERS IN LOCKING FRAMES Reversible metal badges with the words Disconnected and Workman respectively are provided in Signal-boxes for attaching to any lever when disconnected to act as a reminder to the Signalman and thus prevent possible injury to himself by his pulling it over in the usual way, or to indicate to the Signalman that workmen are engaged at the point or signal operated by that lever. Before moving this lever the Signalman must inform the workmen, when in close proximity to the box, that he is about to do so, but when they are engaged beyond speaking distance the Signalman must, before moving the lever right over, give two or three small movements to indicate to the workmen that the lever is about to be reversed. The Signal Department man will be responsible for placing the badges on the levers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTRT3W - Strangeways, Here We Come is the fourth and final studio album by English rock band the Smiths. It was released on 28/09/1987 by Rough Trade Records, several months after the group had disbanded. All of the songs were composed by Johnny Marr, with lyrics written and sung by Morrissey.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying in the chart for 17 weeks. The album also became an international success, peaking at number 16 in the European Albums Chart
from sales covering the 18 major European countries, staying in that chart for nine weeks. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 October 1987 and also by the Recording Industry Association of America on 19 September 1990
The album takes its title from Manchester's notorious Strangeways Prison (now called HM Prison Manchester), whilst the line Borstal, here we come is taken from the novel Billy Liar. Strangeways, of course, is that hideous Victorian monstrosity of a prison operating 88 to a cell, Morrissey has said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRR080 - Anti-smuggling and contraband warning poster displayed on the perimeter fence at HMP Risley, Warrington Road, Risley, Croft, Warrington, Cheshire. The yellow and orange notice uses the headline What will you miss? beside an image of a baby, setting out the personal consequences for anyone caught bringing prohibited items into prison. The visible text points to what could be lost, including friends, family, pets, social life, personal space and routine, with the message aimed at visitors, associates and anyone under pressure to smuggle items into the prison estate.
HMP Risley is a Category C men's prison in the Risley area of Warrington, operated by His Majesty's Prison Service through HM Prison and Probation Service. The prison holds adult male prisoners, including men convicted of sexual offences, and forms part of the wider prison and probation estate in England and Wales. Posters of this kind are part of prison security communications, designed to deter the movement of drugs, mobile phones, SIM cards, weapons, tobacco, medication and other banned goods into custody.
The image shows the poster fixed to dark green railings outside the secure perimeter, with tree branches and summer foliage partly framing the top of the scene. Behind the fence, parts of the prison building and boundary environment are visible, reinforcing the setting as an operational custodial site rather than a general public information board. The message connects prison security with family life and the wider social cost of criminal involvement, using emotional imagery and simple direct wording to warn that smuggling can lead to prosecution, imprisonment and separation from normal everyday life.
This photograph is relevant to editorial themes including prison security, contraband, drugs in custody, mobile phone smuggling, organised crime, visitor screening, criminal justice policy, prison family relationships, Ministry of Justice communications, public safety messaging, and the management

This locomotive was originally numbered D5801 and entered British Railways servÂice at Stratford Depot, East London, on 8th June 1961. With the introduction of BR's TOPS classification in 1968, when re-engined Type 2s were re-classified as Class 31s. D5801 became 31 271. The locomotive was variously allocated to eight Eastern Region and two Midland Region locomotive sheds during its main line career, Toton being its final home. With the entire Class 31s being allocated to the Eastern Region when new, it is quite possible that 31 271 (as D5801) could have worked over the Nene Valley Line right through to Northampton and even after 1964 (when the Northampton Line closed) on freight duties between Peterborough and Oundle or on ironstone traffic from Nassington Quarries to Peterborough and beyond. Wansford station was then closed - these were the pre-NVR days - so 31 271 would have run through Wansford Station non-stop and with passenger trains at least, considerably faster than it is permitted to run today. Perhaps one day some photographic evidence of such runs will come to light!
From Toton it was 'stored unserviceable' from 1st May 1997, its final passenger working having been the 'Multiple Marauder' Rail Tour from Kensington Olympia to Crewe, paired with 31 308, on 10th August 1996.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMPM6 - Trellick Tower is a Grade II* listed tower block on the Cheltenham Estate in Kensal Green, northwest London. Opened in 1972, it had been commissioned by the Greater London Council and designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger. The tower was planned to replace outdated social accommodation, and designed as a follow up to Goldfinger's earlier Balfron Tower in East London. It was the last major project he worked on, and featured various space-saving designs, along with a separate access tower containing a plant room.
High-rise apartments and Brutalist architecture were falling out of favour by the time the tower was completed, and it became a magnet for crime, vandalism, drug abuse and prostitution. Its fortunes gradually improved in the 1980s after the establishment of a residents' association. Security measures were put in place and a concierge was employed, which led to lower crime levels. By the 1990s, the tower had become a desirable place to live, and although it still contains predominantly social housing, demand for private flats has remained high. A local landmark, it has been Grade II* listed since 1998, and has retained its distinctive concrete facade as a result. A fire broke out in 2017, but the concrete structure meant damage was limited, unlike the nearby Grenfell Tower. Trellick Tower has featured on film and television several times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K148YG - The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is the fire and rescue service for London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It was formed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act 1865, under the leadership of superintendent Eyre Massey Shaw. It has 5,992 staff, including 5,096 operational firefighters and officers based at 102 fire stations (plus one river station)
The LFB is led by the Commissioner for Fire and Emergency Planning, a position currently held by Andy Roe
In 2008, existing LFB facilities were deemed unsuitable to meet the demands of modern firefighting and training. The LFB had been training firefighters at its current Grade 2 listed building in Southwark since 1878.
In response, the LFB signed a partnership contract with Babcock International Group PLC to provide firefighter training over the course of 25 years beginning in 2012. Babcock is also the number one training provider to the Royal Navy, which includes firefighter training.
Notable incidents: Grenfell Tower fire 2017, Wembley industrial estate 2017, Camden market fire 2014, Vauxhall helicopter crash 2013, Buncefield oil terminal 2005
In the past two decades the total number of stations has reduced slightly, with the following permanent closures:
2014: Belsize, Bow, Clerkenwell, Downham, Kingsland, Knightsbridge, Silvertown, Southwark, Westminster, and Woolwich.
2005: Manchester Square
1999: Barbican
1998: Heathrow Airport
1998: Shooter's Hill
1993: Sanderstead

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFTMFW - Crash at the Silverstone British F1 Grand Prix 03/07/2022 at 1st corner
The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. Zhou Guanyu and George Russell both experienced poor starts and were passed by Nicholas Latifi. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left in an attempt to keep position. Subsequently, Gasly and Russell made contact and caused Russell to lose control and hit Zhou. The impact flipped Zhou's car and he skid across the track upside down. His car bounced over the tyre barrier, hit the protection fence and came to a rest between the fence and tyre barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, both of whom received damage but were able to return to the pits. However, Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car, he failed to turn the engine on and was forced to retire.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance where he was taken to the race medical centre. Albon was also taken to the race medical centre but was later transferred by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for observations. Both were later released

Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air where he landed upside down skidding down the track, then skipped and bounced all the way across the very long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway barely slowing but turning sideways before the inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel just short of the tire barrier still carrying so much speed and momentum that it launched so high it just glanced off the top of the barrier as it flew over it, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstands before dropping 8 feet landing wedged into the small gap between the fence and tyre barrier where it stopped with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAGDAH - Mine rescue or mines rescue is the specialised job of rescuing miners and others who have become trapped or injured in underground mines because of mining accidents, roof falls or floods and disasters such as explosions.
Altofts Colliery manager, W.E. Garforth suggested using a gallery to test rescue apparatus and train rescuers in 1899 and one was built at his pit in Altofts West Yorkshire. It cost £13,000. He also suggested the idea of a network of rescue stations. The first British mines rescue station opened at Tankersley in 1902. It was commissioned by the West Yorkshire Coal Mine Owners Association.[8] Its building is grade II listed.
In the United Kingdom a series of disasters in the 19th century brought about Royal Commissions which developed the idea of improving mine safety. The commissions influenced the Coal Mines Act of 1911 which made the provision of rescue stations compulsory. By 1919 there were 43 stations in the UK but as the coal industry declined from the last quarter of the 20th century many were closed, leaving six as of 2013, at Crossgates in Fife, Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear, Kellingley at Beal in North Yorkshire, Rawdon in Derbyshire, Dinas at Tonypandy in Glamorgan and at Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire. The MRS Training centre at Houghton-le-Spring opened in 1913 is one of the six surviving British rescue stations which are operated by MRS Training and Rescue. It is a Grade II listed building.
Mines rescue featured in the 1952 film The Brave Don't Cry which was a testimony to the Knockshinnoch disaster. Mine rescuers have often been recognised in Britain by the award of gallantry medals.
In Britain, mines rescue teams may be called to investigate holes in the ground that have appeared because of land surface subsidence into old mineshafts and mine workings

A puffin crossing with nearside signals in Aviemore
A staggered set of pelican crossings with farside signals in Greenwich
Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CATBC1 - A DISUSED builders' yard in Latchford has been earmarked for 189 apartments as part of a £10m development.
Planning permission is being sought to construct three five-storey blocks of flats on the former Beers Timber and Building Supplies yard on Station Road.
In total, the scheme would see 33 one-bedroom apartments, 126 two-bedroom flats and 30 three-bedroom units created for private rent in addition to 232 parking spaces.
The 1.75 hectare site, bordering the Cantilever Bridge and Manchester Ship Canal, has been vacant since March 2006 having first become a timber yard in 1965.
Planning permission for 93 apartments and 38 sheltered accommodation units on the site had previously been granted by Warrington Borough Council in 2008.
In its application, Liverpool-based developer Carpenter Investments said: The proposed development will deliver a £10m investment in the area and 100 full-time equivalent construction jobs, and consolidate jobs within the client's in-house management team.
The proposed development will deliver substantial benefits to the area - investment, jobs and much needed homes in an attractively designed development in a sustainable location.
The proposal will enable the previously developed site to be developed, bringing regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT31E - Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. By law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010.
The purpose of the Gas Safe Register is to protect the public from unsafe gas work. It does this in two main ways, operation of the Register itself e.g. ensuring that the list of competent and qualified engineers is accurate and up-to-date, inspecting the work of Gas Safe registered engineers and investigating reports of illegal gas work. The second area is to conduct public awareness campaigns to raise awareness of gas safety issues.
A 2006 review by the Health and Safety Executive identified ˜a case for change' to the CORGI scheme that had been registering gas installers since 1991. In competitive tender, Capita was appointed to overhaul the scheme and operate it for 10 years from April 2009.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H36677 - An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator, or fully or intermittently autonomously, by onboard computers.
Here, an owner flies a medium sized drone over the river Mersey, close to Runcorn, Widnes, Fiddlers Ferry and the new toll crossing, which is under construction.
Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6NJT - The Hillsborough Monument Memorial - Sculptor's Notes more at https://liverpoolsculptures.co.uk/the-hillsborough-monument-memorial/
The Hillsborough monument was comissioned by the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and sculpted by Tom Murphy.
Background: A young girl asked her Father, where is the Hillsborough Memorial? She was told: ˜There is one in Anfield.' She said: ˜Why can't we have one in the city centre for everyone to see.' This simple question was the catalyst for this monument
The monument is circular with a raised design in low relief. The imagery shows an imaginary place, which is meant to guide our thoughts of remembrance and all that has happened since the tragedy
The people depicted in the design are ˜the guardians of the memory', or ˜people like us' Their purpose is symbolic and other figures represent justice, hope and loss. The setting is a beautiful and quiet place, which may help us to think about the characters and individual personalities of those who died. The people who passed away are represented by the birds who fly freely throughout the work.
We reflect and empathise with those who died while considering the people they were, and might have been, were it not for the disaster
Description of the raised relief on the maquette
The design begins with two large tablets that list the names those who died. A dedication and information plaque is situated between the tablets of names with a poem, written especially for the moument, by David Charters (journalist and author). Immediately above the central dedication is a wreath of spring flowers. This reminds us of the season and number of victims who died. A Liver Bird stands guard. Below the information plaque is a rail of football scarves from differing clubs signifying the way football fans responded nationally in the days after the disaster. Around the top rim of the monument is the proclamation: ˜HILLSBOROUGH DISASTER. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'.

Fifty-two is the 6th Bell number and a decagonal number. In this shot 52 was attracted to 53 and as you can imagine I was tempted to cheat by killing two birds with one stone. However, my standards are luckily higher than that!
Its the approximate number of weeks in a year. 52 weeks is 364 days, while the tropical year is 365.24 days long. According to ISO 8601, most years have 52 weeks while some have 53. On the piano, its the number of white keys (notes in the C major scale).
Also the number of cards in a standard deck of playing cards, not counting Jokers or advertisement cards &
the name of a practical joke card game '52 Pickup'. Direct calls to Mexico use +52.
52 American hostages were held in the Iranian Hostage Crisis between November 4, 1979 and January 20, 1981.

In appearance it is similar to smooth gloss paint when applied but it remains slippery indefinitely thereby preventing any intruder from gaining a foothold.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC71 - A pasty is a British baked pastry, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall, South West England, but has spread all over the British Isles. It is made by placing an uncooked filling, typically meat and vegetables, in the middle of a flat shortcrust pastry circle, bringing the edges together in the middle, and crimping over the top to form a seal before baking.
The traditional Cornish pasty, which since 2011 has had Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in Europe, is filled with beef, sliced or diced potato, swede (also known as yellow turnip or rutabaga “ referred to in Cornwall and other parts of the West Country as turnip) and onion, seasoned with salt and pepper, and baked. Today, the pasty is the food most associated with Cornwall. It is a traditional dish and accounts for 6% of the Cornish food economy. Pasties with many different fillings are made, and some shops specialise in selling pasties.
The origins of the pasty are unclear, though there are many references to them throughout historical documents and fiction. The pasty is now popular worldwide because of the spread of Cornish miners and sailors from across Cornwall, and variations can be found in Australia, Mexico, the United States, Ulster and elsewhere.
Pasties resemble turnovers from many other cuisines and cultures, including the bridie in Scotland, empanada in Spanish-speaking countries, pirog in Eastern Europe, samsa in Central Asia, curry puff in Southeast Asia, and shaobing in China

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4704019146 - 'The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England was started in 1903. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles south west of Bristol in the seaside town.
It is supported in true victorian fashion by 600 iron piles, and is 400 metres long. Unfortunatly it has form where fire is concerned. It has been damaged by fire on two occasions in 1930 and 2008.
At 01:35 on the 28 July 2008, a fire at the foot of the north tower on the shoreward (eastern) end of the pavilion triggered the privately monitored fire alarm. The Essex-based alarm monitoring company were unable to contact the key-holder by mobile phone and no further action was taken.
It was not until 06:46 that the Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) was notified, by this time a hefty blaze was under way. It deployed 13 fire engines, special appliances, and more than 85 firefighters to tackle the blaze, but the building was soon destroyed.
Robert Tinker, a Grand Pier employee, was later praised by the fire service as he braved the extreme intensity of the heat from the flames to rush around the side of the building to remove several gas canisters which had been stored within the premises, had these not been removed the AFRS claim that the fire could have been much worse and with the possibility of needing evacuation of local residents and traders.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire started due to a number of deep fat fryers which had been located within the area pavilion, however after further investigation this was later ruled out, as was arson. On 22 October a news conference was held by AFRS who announced that despite their efforts the cause of the fire would be recorded as unknown, but that the most likely cause was an electrical fire.
Workmen began dismantling the wreckage on 12th September and a design competition for the new pavilion was won by the Bristol-based Angus Meek Architects' on 15th October. On 7th December it was announced that a slowly rotating 91 metres (299 ft) tall observation tower was proposed along with the new building.
On 12 March 2009, North Somerset Council approved the plans, which are to cost \u00a334 million. The new pavilion is expected to open in the summer of 2010. On 5 August 2009 it was announced that contractors John Sisk &
Son Ltd had been selected to construct the new pavilion and it was hoped that it would be completed by July 2010. These lads are working on the project. Jeff Bonvallet is at the far right.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4610912265 - 'This is an interesting service I came across while at the Northwich Thundersprint this weekend. If I was a bike enthusiast I think I would like to make my final journey like this. A black motorcycle hearse. In recent times, the Motorcycle plus side-hearse has become more popular. This type of hearse is a motorcycle with a special side-vehicle built to carry a casket or an urn. These hearses are often used during the funeral of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.
Motorbikes have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance travelled when compared with cars. In 2004, figures from the UK Department for Transport indicated that motorcycles have 121 deaths or serious injuries per 100 million vehicle kilometers, compared to the corresponding figure of 2.6 for motorists. IE over 50 times more likely. This is due to the increased power and acceleration of bikes, but also size and ability of motorists to spot and make allowance for them.
This situation is helped by higher-visibility gear (not as sexy as the all-black leather iconic approach, but more practical), use of abrasion resistive gear and padding, Full face helmet (skidlid) with gloves and boots. All this gear on mopeds can look rather silly (although safe) and I remember in my first job a workmate being nicknamed 'Evil Kenevil' due to how bizarre this looked.
In the UK, for example, organizations such as the IAM and RoSPA offer advanced motorcycle rider training with the aim of reducing accident rates. There is often an added incentive to riders in the form of reduced insurance premiums.
A final quote from the Managing Director of www.MotorcycleFunerals.com Rev. Paul Sinclair. He believes we should reflect people's lifestyles in their funerals.
'No one submits a Catholic to a Muslim service or places a Liverpool fan in an Arsenal strip when they die so why should motorcycle enthusiasts be last seen in a car?'
Er.. Quite!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HG6TBJ - The safety pin is a variation of the regular pin which includes a simple spring mechanism and a clasp. The clasp serves two purposes: to form a closed loop thereby properly fastening the pin to whatever it is applied to, and to cover the end of the pin to protect the user from the sharp point.
Safety pins are commonly used to fasten pieces of fabric or clothing together. Safety pins, or more usually a special version with an extra safe cover, called a nappy pin, are widely used to fasten cloth diapers (nappies), as the safety clasp, while remaining ingestion hazard, prevents the baby from being jabbed. Similarly, they can be used to patch torn or damaged clothing. Safety pins can also be used as an accessory in jewelry, like earrings, chains, and wristbands. Sometimes they are used to attach an embroidered patch. Size 3 is often used in quilting and may be labelled for purchase as a quilting pin. Size 4 and larger may be called blanket pins and deemed acceptable as kilt pins for informal dress, depending upon design and appearance.

We often forget behind our car of air-bags, crumple zones etc. that we are still mortal, hurtling along as if the road was a motorway (although it is six miles distant) in a little four wheeled tin can. On a motorbike its even more perilous, no crumple zones, only your leathers and crash helmet to protect you.
Kevin Pickstock was a keen biker and only 40 when he died. He was from Rudheath, barely a mile up the road from the bend at the Hartford road junction of the A556 bypass. A June summers evening that changed the lives of all his family, his two sons and many friends. It was not the first accident or fatality here.
There are still no safety measures on the road here, no 30mph zone, no calming, no Gatso camera.
I certainly make the effort to take it just a bit slower, when I pass these flowers now.

Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02EN - A close view inside a pub toilet showing an Hi I'm Angela poster from the Ask for Angela safety campaign, mounted on a painted wall next to a wall fixed hand dryer. The sign is designed as a clear, high impact public notice for people who feel unsafe on a night out or on a date. The headline text reads Hi I'm Angela and the body copy prompts situations such as a date not going well or feeling uncomfortable, including references to dating apps like Tinder and POF. It explains a discreet code phrase: if you go to the bar and ask for Angela , staff will understand that you need help getting out of the situation. The poster also indicates that staff can assist with arranging a taxi or helping someone leave discreetly, emphasising low fuss support and privacy. A hashtag askforangela is visible on the design, alongside icons and a QR code that suggests further information is available.
The setting, a pub toilet, matters because it is one of the few private spaces in a venue where someone can pause, read, and decide to seek help. The combination of everyday washroom fixtures and the bold campaign design reinforces the message that safeguarding is part of normal venue operation, not an exceptional response. The image works well for editorial use covering women's safety, night time economy responsibility, harassment prevention, and the practical measures pubs and bars adopt to support customers. It also fits features about modern dating culture and the risks some people experience when meeting strangers, showing how public venues can provide a structured, discreet route to assistance without requiring confrontation. The readable text and recognisable campaign branding make it useful as an illustrative image for news articles, community safety communications, safeguarding training, and awareness content about staying safe while socialising.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6NT7 - The Hillsborough Monument Memorial - Sculptor's Notes more at https://liverpoolsculptures.co.uk/the-hillsborough-monument-memorial/

The sign reads, High Speed Trains pass this platform. Keep back from the platform edge behind the yellow line, delivering a clear and direct safety message to passengers waiting on the platform. The surface of the sign shows signs of wear, with chipped paint and weathering that reflect prolonged outdoor exposure and constant public use.
Warrington Bank Quay is a major mainline station on the West Coast Main Line, serving high-speed intercity services as well as regional rail traffic. The warning sign highlights the operational reality of fast-moving trains passing through platforms without stopping, underlining the importance of passenger awareness and compliance with safety guidance in busy transport environments. The bold yellow background and black lettering follow long-established British railway signage conventions designed for maximum visibility and instant comprehension.
The image captures everyday transport infrastructure that is often overlooked but plays a critical role in public safety. The red column, industrial canopy structure and blurred station elements in the background provide contextual cues of a working railway environment. The combination of utilitarian design, worn materials and explicit safety instruction conveys themes of risk management, public responsibility and the practical realities of rail travel in the UK.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering rail transport, passenger safety, infrastructure, commuting and public services, as well as commercial applications relating to transport systems, health and safety messaging, travel awareness campaigns and representations of everyday British railway environments.

The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
