Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0J4 - Busy street scene on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, photographed on a warm spring day outside Bar Pop, with visitors walking past pavement tables while drinkers sit under black parasols beside the Rochdale Canal. Rainbow bunting and Pride colours hang above the trees, giving the street a festival feel even outside a formal parade. The image captures the everyday visitor economy of one of Britain's best-known LGBTQ+ quarters: bars, cafés, music venues, late-night entertainment, drag culture, weekend tourism and casual daytime socialising, all compressed into a narrow city-centre street.
Bar Pop's sign is visible on the right, placing the view at 10 Canal Street, close to Sackville Street, Richmond Street, Bloom Street and the Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Gardens. The scene is useful not just as a nightlife photograph, but as a wider record of how Manchester has turned queer visibility into a public part of its civic identity. Canal Street is both a leisure destination and a symbol of acceptance, shaped by decades of LGBTQ+ organising, Pride events, bar culture and the continuing need for safe, visible social spaces. The mix of LGBTQ+ visitors, tourists, couples, friends and daytime drinkers shows the Village as a lived city neighbourhood rather than a sealed nightlife zone.
Fresh green trees, short sleeves, sunglasses, outdoor seating and soft bright light suggest late spring or early summer weather. The sky is largely hidden by foliage and flags, but the open-air drinking, warm clothing choices and relaxed pedestrian flow point to a pleasant, mild day. The photograph has strong editorial value for stories about Manchester tourism, Pride culture, hospitality, inclusive public spaces, canalside regeneration, the night-time economy, queer heritage, street life, urban planning, visitor behaviour and the commercial pressures facing famous nightlife districts as they balance entertainment, safety, identity and redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91ENY - A close-up documentary view of a public Children's Play Area sign beside open grassland at Red Lane, Appleton, Warrington, Cheshire, with the clear instruction No Dogs Allowed and a red warning symbol showing a barred dog. The image records a familiar but important local public stock-photo/gotonysmith-Health.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>health message: children's play spaces, sports fields and parks need protection from dog fouling, contaminated soil, unpleasant mess and avoidable infection risks. Dog faeces can carry roundworm eggs linked with toxocariasis, and children are a particular concern because they play close to the ground, touch grass, mud, play equipment and football areas, and may put contaminated fingers or objects near their mouths. This makes the apparently simple no dogs sign a useful editorial image for stories about councils, parks management, responsible dog ownership, street cleansing, public space protection orders, hygiene, community safety and the tension between dog walking and safe recreation for children. The scene is plainly suburban north west England, with a wooden post, mown green playing field, goalposts, leafless trees and distant Warrington housing under a bright blue sky with thin cloud, suggesting a cool clear late winter or early spring day. The sign is weathered but legible, with strong black, white and red graphic design. It also illustrates the wider practical nuisance of dog dirt: soiled shoes, contaminated sports pitches, spoiled family recreation, extra council cleaning costs and reduced confidence in shared open spaces. For stock use it can support articles about playground bylaws, no dogs allowed rules, environmental health campaigns, dog waste bins, enforcement, fines, antisocial behaviour, public parks, local authority signage, safe outdoor play, childhood health, disease prevention and the everyday civic detail that keeps parks usable. The subject is a clear British public information sign in a real community setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM02P - An Ask for Angela safety poster is displayed in a Wetherspoon pub, explaining how someone on a date or in an uncomfortable situation can discreetly ask bar staff for help. The poster uses the phrase Hi, I'm Angela and tells stock-photo/gotonysmith-Customers.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>customers that if they go to the bar and ask for Angela, staff will know they need assistance and can help them leave safely, call a taxi or support them without fuss. The image is a strong editorial photograph for stories about pub safety, dating safety, nightlife, personal security, safeguarding, women's safety, harassment, coercive behaviour, vulnerability in licensed premises and the responsibilities of hospitality staff. The Ask for Angela initiative began in Lincolnshire as a simple code-word campaign for people who feel unsafe on dates or nights out, and has since been promoted widely across pubs, bars, clubs and hospitality venues. The visible Wetherspoon branding, National Pubwatch logo, website address, taxi icon and #askforangela hashtag make the photograph useful for coverage of public awareness campaigns, safer streets, staff training, bystander intervention, alcohol-related risk, spiking concerns, online dating and customer welfare. It can also illustrate broader debate about the night-time economy, licensing, responsible venues, town centre safety, domestic abuse awareness and the need for discreet escape routes when people feel pressured, threatened or trapped. The poster's direct wording and bright graphic design show how safeguarding messages are made accessible in everyday public spaces. As a documentary stock image, it records a practical safety measure inside a British pub, linking hospitality, policing partnerships, customer care and public information in a simple, recognisable campaign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38K - Tatton is a constituency in Cheshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Esther McVey, a Conservative.
Constituency profile
Tatton comprises the north-western part of the Cheshire East unitary authority, including the towns of Knutsford and Wilmslow, and a number of villages such as Alderley Edge, Chelford, Handforth and Mobberley, in Cheshire. It also covers a small, north-east, part of the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority, including some of the outskirts of Northwich.
The seat largely comprises prosperous villages and small towns, many of which have high property prices, set amidst Cheshire countryside, featuring country parks, hills, recreation grounds and golf courses. The area was previously dominated by countryside
however, since the 1950s, it has developed a largely built-up, suburban character, being located on the fringes of Greater Manchester. The largest centres of population are Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford. Its proximity to Manchester means Tatton forms part of the commuter belt to the city.
The constituency was created for the 1983 general election following the major reorganisation of local authorities under the Local Government Act 1972, which came into effect on 1 April 1974. It was formed from parts of the seats of Runcorn, Cheadle, Northwich and Knutsford. The constituency is named after Tatton Park, a stately home in this area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ378 - Manchester Piccadilly is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. Opened as Store Street in 1842, it was renamed Manchester London Road in 1847 and became Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. Located to the south-east of Manchester city centre, it hosts long-distance intercity and cross-country services to national destinations including London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton and Bournemouth
regional services to destinations in Northern England including Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and York
and local commuter services around Greater Manchester. It is one of 19 major stations managed by Network Rail. The station has 14 platforms: 12 terminal and two through platforms (numbers 13 and 14). Piccadilly is also a major interchange with the Metrolink light rail system with two tram platforms in its undercroft.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in the Manchester station group with over 30 million passenger entries and exits between April 2019 and March 2020
A major redevelopment of the station and surrounding area has been proposed to complement the HS2 proposals involving the construction of a canopy over the HS2 platforms, the creation of a new entrance, and office, retail and residential development. Designs indicate that the derelict Mayfield Station and the Gateway House office block will be demolished. The plans were approved by the Government in November 2016
Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) proposals include the construction of new platforms under Piccadilly station and the proposed HS2 platforms. The 2016 'Manchester Piccadilly Options Assessment' by the National Infrastructure Commission stated: Addition of Northern Powerhouse Rail and Station to the Manchester Piccadilly system will be the last step of the process of transforming the station in to a transport super hub. The NPR station and its construction will need to be considered throughout the design and implementation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XX3 - Staying safe from terrorism - More at https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/t/terrorism-in-the-uk/staying-safe-from-terrorism/
The threat of terrorism in the UK is real, but with a little knowledge you can increase your safety and help protect yourself against a terrorist attack. Find out below how to stay safe when you're out and about and how to report any suspicious behaviour that could be connected to terrorism.
What you can do
Communities defeat terrorism. We need the help and support of individuals, businesses and communities across the UK to remain alert and maintain the safety and security of those places where we live, work and socialise.
If you see or hear something unusual or suspicious, trust your instincts and ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) by reporting possible terrorist activity in confidence. Any piece of information could be important, so it's better to be safe and report anything you see. You can help the police prevent terrorism and save lives.
Crowded places, events, public transport, and iconic locations throughout the country are some examples of locations that could be potential targets for terrorists.
You're familiar with your workplace and surrounding area, so you're ideally placed to spot when something is amiss. In this period of heightened alert, it is vital to remain vigilant, trust your instincts and report possible terrorist activity to the police.
Look for anything that seems out of the ordinary, such as:
people in stationary vehicles watching a building or structure
vehicles moving slowly near public buildings, structures or bridges, or parked in suspicious circumstances
people using recording equipment, including camera phones, or seen making notes or sketches of security details
someone suspicious paying close attention to specific entry and exit points, stairwells, hallways or fire escapes
people loitering at or near premises for long periods and watching staff, visitors and deliveries for no reason

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y2F - The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a hop-on hop-off rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes which operated until 2014 and 2019 respectively), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge being to introduce a new Routemaster. Following an open design competition in 2008, Wrightbus was awarded the contract to build the bus at the end of 2009, and the final design was announced in May 2010.
The design for the new double-decker bus was inspired by the original AEC Routemaster, and features three doors and two staircases to allow accessible boarding. Unlike the AEC Routemaster, the new bus has a full front end rather than the protruding, bonneted half cab design, and a rear platform with a door that can be closed, rather than being permanently open. The layout of the new bus allows it to be operated by the driver alone. The cost of each bus was £355,000 over the four-year procurement period. The last of the 1,000 New Routemasters was delivered in December 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23D4 - Transport for London - TfL - Electric scooters
Rental electric scooters (e-scooters) are the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places within London - and even this is limited to specific boroughs. It is still illegal to use privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters on public roads.
A new form of transport
We want to explore new, environmentally-friendly forms of transport that can be used to reduce road congestion in London - but we need to make sure that any alternatives are safe for both users and non-users alike.
The current rental e-scooter trial trial is helping us test the best ways to protect the public.
Rental e-scooters have specific safety features installed. For example, they are limited to a speed of 12.5mph and have lights that are always on throughout any rental.
Our current trial of rental e-scooters is expected to run to autumn 2023. We are currently running a competitive procurement process for the new phase of London's rental e-scooter trial, and operators will be selected on their ability to meet strict safety requirements and high operating standards.
Use electric scooters legally
The London e-scooter rental scheme is approved by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters are not legal to use on public roads.
E-scooters and powered transporters may be used on private land with permission from the landowner or occupier but several laws make it illegal and/or spell out the penalties if you're caught riding one on public roads

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK3EX3 - Bully beef (also known as corned beef in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and other Commonwealth countries as well as the United States) is a variety of meat made from finely minced corned beef in a small amount of gelatin. The name bully beef likely comes from the French bouilli (meaning boiled) in Napoleonic times, or possibly from the head of a bull depicted on the popular Hereford brand of canned corned beef. The cans have a distinctive oblong shape. Bully beef and hardtack biscuits were the main field rations of the British Army from the Boer War to World War II. It is commonly served sliced in a corned beef sandwich. Potato-based dishes, such as hash and hotch-potch, in which the potatoes and beef are stewed together, and corned beef hash, where pre-boiled potatoes and corned beef are mixed with Worcestershire sauce then fried, are also made. Tinned corned beef is also used in France. Some places where British troops were present in the 20th century (especially during World War II), such as Malta, have adopted bully beef as part of their national cuisine. In February 2009, the British Defence Equipment and Support announced that they would be phasing out bully beef from ration packs as part of the introduction of the new Multi-Climate Ration Packs until this change was reversed due to backlash
The next development was the key open can. Both J. Osterhoudt, in 1866, and Arsène Saupiquet in 1882, had patented key open cans, with possibly only Saupiquet achieving commercial success, but it was not until a cheaper method of production was developed by John Zimmerman in 1892[24] that American companies adopted the innovation, with Cudahy's, Libby's and Armour soon producing corned beef in the easy to open tins. The British Government was slow to adopt the new cans, and in 1898 the Civil and Military Gazette saw it as scandalous that they were still supplying meat in unget-at-able tins when the new cans were available

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAP8 - In electrical safety testing, portable appliance testing (PAT, PAT inspection or PAT testing) is a process in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for the process is in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and any flexible cables for good condition, and also where required, verification of earthing (grounding) continuity, and a test of the soundness of insulation between the current carrying parts, and any exposed metal that may be touched. The formal limits for pass/fail of these electrical tests vary somewhat depending on the category of equipment being tested.
British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far it is reasonably and practicable) to prevent danger. Private houses are not covered by this legislation, although occupiers' liability requires householders not to deliberately expose occupants or visitors to unreasonable risks. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.
Fixed wiring in buildings
Guidance from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, published under the IEE brand) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that a competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. They suggest initial intervals for combined inspection and testing that range from three months (for construction equipment) to one year, and in many cases, longer periods for re-testing (certain types of appliance in schools, hotels, offices and shops)
Carrying out PAT
This can be done by hiring an external company to test all the electrical products in a business (someone who has had some PAT training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M369GH - Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops.
Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of £375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to £521 million. The final cost after delays was £776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. −£9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. The extended line is due to be operational by early 2023

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBJX - A vape shop is a retail outlet specializing in the selling of electronic cigarette products. There are also online vape shops. A vape shop offers a range of e-cigarette products. The majority of vape shops do not sell e-cigarette products that are from Big Tobacco companies. In 2013, online search engine searches on vape shops surpassed searches on e-cigarettes. Around a third of all sales of e-cigarette products take place in vape shops. Big Tobacco believes the independent e-cigarette market is a threat to their interests.
Effective August 8, 2016, under the Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) rules, a vape shop that mixes or prepares e-liquids, or makes or modifies any kind of e-cigarettes, is regulated as a tobacco product manufacturer. The US FDA acknowledged that many vape shops will go out of business, but they also state many will stay open, despite hefty costs. Vape shop owner Joe Baba in the US believes a ban on public vaping might put several vape shops out of business because taste-testing would be prohibited. The revised EU Tobacco Products Directive came into effect May 2016 which regulates the sale and marketing of e-cigarettes. Small business owners are concerned that the regulations will make e-cigarettes less interesting to consumers and that this means a downturn of their business
By 2014 all the major multinational tobacco companies had entered the e-cigarette market. They did so either by buying existing e-cigarette companies (including Ruyan, the original Chinese e-cigarette company, which was bought by Imperial Tobacco) or by developing their own products. Although there continue to be independently owned vape shops, from economic and political perspectives the e-cigarette business is now part of the traditional tobacco industry. The smaller operators, who are independent sellers of e-cigarettes (so-called vape shops), are losing market share to the large tobacco companies

The brand is widely sold and marketed in the UK, South Africa, India and Malaysia as well as parts of northern Europe and east Asia.
Chubbsafes is owned under licence by the Gunnebo Group.
Early Years: 1818-1938
In 1818, Charles Chubb and his younger brother, Jeremiah Chubb, founded the Chubb Company and opened a workshop for making locks on Temple Street in Wolverhampton, England. Two years later, they opened a shop at 57 St.Paul's Churchyard in London.
In 1835, Charles Chubb expanded the business and took out a patent for a burglary-resistant safe. A safe works was opened shortly afterwards, in 1837, in London and in 1839 the brothers patented their first fire safe.
Following the death of Charles, the company remained in the family, being taken over by his son, John Chubb, in 1846, and then his grandchildren, John Charles, George Hayter and Harry Withers Chubb in 1872.
In 1882, the business became a private limited company and changed its name to Chubb & Sons Lock and Safe Company Ltd.
The London safe works moved to Wednesfield Road in Wolverhampton in 1908 and when the site was extended in 1938, it was joined by the lock works.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAGDAH - Mine rescue or mines rescue is the specialised job of rescuing miners and others who have become trapped or injured in underground mines because of mining accidents, roof falls or floods and disasters such as explosions.
Altofts Colliery manager, W.E. Garforth suggested using a gallery to test rescue apparatus and train rescuers in 1899 and one was built at his pit in Altofts West Yorkshire. It cost £13,000. He also suggested the idea of a network of rescue stations. The first British mines rescue station opened at Tankersley in 1902. It was commissioned by the West Yorkshire Coal Mine Owners Association.[8] Its building is grade II listed.
In the United Kingdom a series of disasters in the 19th century brought about Royal Commissions which developed the idea of improving mine safety. The commissions influenced the Coal Mines Act of 1911 which made the provision of rescue stations compulsory. By 1919 there were 43 stations in the UK but as the coal industry declined from the last quarter of the 20th century many were closed, leaving six as of 2013, at Crossgates in Fife, Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear, Kellingley at Beal in North Yorkshire, Rawdon in Derbyshire, Dinas at Tonypandy in Glamorgan and at Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire. The MRS Training centre at Houghton-le-Spring opened in 1913 is one of the six surviving British rescue stations which are operated by MRS Training and Rescue. It is a Grade II listed building.
Mines rescue featured in the 1952 film The Brave Don't Cry which was a testimony to the Knockshinnoch disaster. Mine rescuers have often been recognised in Britain by the award of gallantry medals.
In Britain, mines rescue teams may be called to investigate holes in the ground that have appeared because of land surface subsidence into old mineshafts and mine workings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DKW7MT - Latchford is a suburb and electoral ward of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th-century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high-level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon Læccford meaning boggy-stream ford
Latchford was originally a township in the ancient parish of Grappenhall, in Cheshire. It was also part of Bucklow Hundred, and was close to the border with Lancashire.
Between 1894 and 1974, part of Latchford was placed within the County Borough of Warrington, and the registration county of Lancashire, whilst the rest of Latchford became a civil parish named Latchford Without and was transferred to Lancashire.
With the local government reforms of 1974, as part of the newly formed Cheshire borough of Warrington, Latchford was transferred back to Cheshire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNE9 - A credit union is a member-owned nonprofit cooperative financial institution.
Credit unions may offer financial services as commercial banks such as share accounts (savings accounts), share draft accounts (cheque accounts), credit cards, credit, share term certificates (certificates of deposit), and online banking. Normally, only a member of a credit union may deposit or borrow money. In several African countries, credit unions are commonly referred to as SACCOs (Savings and Credit Co-Operatives).
Worldwide, credit union systems vary significantly in their total assets and average institution asset size, ranging from volunteer operations with a handful of members to institutions with hundreds of thousands of members and assets worth billions of US dollars. In 2018, the number of members in credit unions worldwide was 375 million, with over 100 million members having been added since 2016.
Leading up to the financial crisis of 20072008, commercial banks engaged in approximately five times more subprime lending relative to credit unions and were two and a half times more likely to fail during the crisis. American credit unions more than doubled lending to small businesses between 2008 and 2016, from $30 billion to $60 billion, while lending to small businesses overall during the same period declined by around $100 billion. In the US, public trust in credit unions stands at 60%, compared to 30% for big banks. Furthermore, small businesses are 80% more likely to be satisfied by a credit union than with a big bank.
Natural-person credit unions (also called retail credit unions or consumer credit unions) serve individuals, as distinguished from corporate credit unions, which serve other credit unions

The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator, or fully or intermittently autonomously, by onboard computers.
Here, an owner flies a medium sized drone over the river Mersey, close to Runcorn, Widnes, Fiddlers Ferry and the new toll crossing, which is under construction.
Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F80G97 - Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, that currently competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Manchester United have won 20 league titles, the most of any English club, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 199899, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. Louis van Gaal is the club's current manager after Ferguson's successor David Moyes was sacked after only 10 months in charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91X66 - Harbour / Harbor panorama at Los Cristianos town, Southern Tenerife, Canary Islands Spain
Historical references to Los Cristianos date back to the 16th century, when it is described as a harbour by the Notary Hernán Guerra.[2] Los Cristianos remained an important port for the south of Tenerife throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries but remained unsettled until the latter part of the 19th Century due to the threat of pirate raids as there was no significant population to warrant a castle or fort.
The first permanent settlement of Los Cristianos was in the 1860s when it was described by Pedro de Olive as a hamlet in Arona, with three one-storey houses, a two-storey house and a hut. It was officially recognised in governmental documents as been established in 1888 by 29 houses and a cave.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4482339695 - 'The super historic market square off the village green at Witney in lovely West Oxfordshire, sitting on the river Windrush, about 12 or so miles from Morses Oxford after a rain shower. It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.
The town hall, here to the left of the shot is 18th century. Local legend holds that it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, but this claim is unstantiated (a bit like how Mr Cameroooon is to slash UK debt, but not actually increase taxes).
A more credible claim is that Witney was the centre of blanket manufacture (which it was). In fact the local footy team (of which I have not actually seen, accompained by a pie at half time) Witney United FC retains its nickname 'The Blanketmen' from the town's traditional trade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02EN - A close view inside a pub toilet showing an Hi I'm Angela poster from the Ask for Angela safety campaign, mounted on a painted wall next to a wall fixed hand dryer. The sign is designed as a clear, high impact public notice for people who feel unsafe on a night out or on a date. The headline text reads Hi I'm Angela and the body copy prompts situations such as a date not going well or feeling uncomfortable, including references to dating apps like Tinder and POF. It explains a discreet code phrase: if you go to the bar and ask for Angela, staff will understand that you need help getting out of the situation. The poster also indicates that staff can assist with arranging a taxi or helping someone leave discreetly, emphasising low fuss support and privacy. A hashtag askforangela is visible on the design, alongside icons and a QR code that suggests further information is available.
The setting, a pub toilet, matters because it is one of the few private spaces in a venue where someone can pause, read, and decide to seek help. The combination of everyday washroom fixtures and the bold campaign design reinforces the message that safeguarding is part of normal venue operation, not an exceptional response. The image works well for editorial use covering women's safety, night time economy responsibility, harassment prevention, and the practical measures pubs and bars adopt to support customers. It also fits features about modern dating culture and the risks some people experience when meeting strangers, showing how public venues can provide a structured, discreet route to assistance without requiring confrontation. The readable text and recognisable campaign branding make it useful as an illustrative image for news articles, community safety communications, safeguarding training, and awareness content about staying safe while socialising.

and for a brief period Ulster Transport Railways (UTR), is the railway operator in Northern Ireland. NIR is a subsidiary of Translink, whose parent company is the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHCo), and is one of seven publicly owned train operators in the United Kingdom, the others being Direct Rail Services, Northern Trains, Transport for Wales Rail, Southeastern, LNER, and ScotRail. It has a common Board of Management with the other two companies in the group, Ulsterbus and Metro (formerly Citybus).
The rail network in Northern Ireland is not part of the National Rail network of Great Britain, nor does it use Standard Gauge, instead using Irish Gauge in common with the Republic of Ireland. Also, NIR is the only commercial non-heritage passenger operator in the United Kingdom to operate a vertical integration model, with responsibility of all aspects of the network including running trains, maintaining rolling stock and infrastructure, and pricing. Since the Single European Railway Directive 2012, the company has allowed open access operations by other rail operators, although no operator has started such a service. In 2019, NI Railways carried over 15 million passengers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G4 - Passengers at Crewe station now have access to a new waiting room, specifically designed to offer those with hidden disabilities a safe and calm environment.
The Calm Corner is the first of its kind on the rail network. It features the use of grey and green colours in order to give a calming effect, a living wall and plants to complement the colour scheme, specially designed furniture for comfort and relaxation, a child's play table, LED rope lighting that can change brightness to suit all.
It also has screens with old images of Crewe station and town centre to help trigger memories for those suffering from dementia and has a rail point Totem offering helpful advice (EG train and station layout).
It was brought to life through the work of train operators at the station, Network Rail and advice from a number of partner charities.
The idea was first suggested by work experience student, Megan Hughes, who used her own experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome as inspiration for the project.
Passengers using the waiting room can have access to the same support and passenger information they would get elsewhere on the station. However, it will be with the addition of a special totem screen, offering helpful advice such as train times, onward travel information and station layout.
Through ongoing work with Alzheimer's Society, London Northwestern Railway is committed to improving the experience for passengers living with dementia, to help support independent living through the use of the rail network.
The train operator is now working on initiatives to improve staff training as well as implementing small changes at stations that will make a big difference to the experience for passengers.
The memory corner' has been designed to help trigger memories for those who have used Crewe station for many years using a collection of historic photos of the station.
It is hoped this collection can grow, with contributions from passengers, families and other supporters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTJ8 - Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint (P2MP), or mesh wired or wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, stores, and other areas where security is needed. Though Videotelephony is seldom called 'CCTV' one exception is the use of video in distance education, where it is an important tool.
Surveillance of the public using CCTV is common in many areas around the world. In recent years, the use of body worn video cameras has been introduced as a new form of surveillance, often used in law enforcement, with cameras located on a police officer's chest or head. Video surveillance has generated significant debate about balancing its use with individuals' right to privacy even when in public.
There are about 350 million surveillance cameras worldwide as of 2016. About 65% of these cameras are installed in Asia.
An article published in CCTV Image magazine estimated the number of private and local government operated cameras in the United Kingdom was 1.85 million in 2011. The estimate was based on extrapolating from a comprehensive survey of public and private cameras within the Cheshire Constabulary jurisdiction. This works out as an average of one camera for every 32 people in the UK, although the density of cameras varies greatly from place to place. The Cheshire report also claims that the average person on a typical day would be seen by 70 CCTV cameras.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEK - Bath St,Warrington Hospitals NHS Trust,Cheshire,England,UK is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. A hospital trust building on Bath Street speaks to the everyday estate behind the NHS, the offices, access roads and local facilities that support clinical care but rarely appear in headline imagery. The scene can illustrate health administration, hospital pressures, public-sector estates, local employment, patient services and the place of NHS sites within town-centre streets. The location detail, Warrington, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include NHS, hospital estate, healthcare infrastructure and public services, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H369J2 - An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7AYY - A London Overground Class 378 electric multiple unit train stands at the platform at Clapham Junction railway station in South West London during night-time operations. The train's distinctive yellow front and blue-and-orange livery are illuminated by platform lighting, while the digital destination display glows against the darker surroundings. The scene captures the train paused between services, emphasising the routine, functional nature of London's suburban rail network after dark.
Clapham Junction is one of the busiest railway stations in Europe and a critical interchange for commuter services across London and the South East. London Overground Class 378 trains operate high-frequency routes linking outer and inner London, forming a key part of the capital's public transport system and supporting daily commuting, evening travel and night-time connectivity. The station's multiple platforms, canopy structure and signage frame the train within a working urban transport environment.
The image highlights modern rail design and infrastructure in everyday use rather than staged or promotional contexts. The quiet platform, reflective surfaces and artificial lighting convey the atmosphere of late-evening travel, when stations shift from peak-hour intensity to a calmer but still essential role in city life. Details such as tactile paving, platform markings and illuminated signals reinforce themes of safety, accessibility and operational precision.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering public transport, rail infrastructure, commuting patterns, London urban life and sustainable mobility, as well as commercial applications relating to transport planning, infrastructure investment, urban development and representations of modern European city transport systems.
