PSTN Network Switch Off In 2025
The first stage Openreach propose to facilitate the retirement of their public switched telephone network (PSTN) is to issue 'Stop Sell' dates for specific telephone exchanges. Once a 'Stop Sell' date has passed, communication providers (CP's) will be unable to order any copper based products if a fibre solution is available at the customer's premises. Accepted fibre solutions include FTTP and SOGEA/SOGFast.
Impacted product and services that will be unavailable beyond a 'Stop Sell' date include WLR3 analogue, ISDN 2, ISDN 30, LLU SMPF, SLU SMPF, Narrowband Line Share and Classic products.
Openreach have identified 581 specific 'FTTP Priority Exchanges' that will be the first to receive 'Stop Sell' notices, see below.
Openreach have not identified the Stockton Heath Exchange as a 'FTTP Priority Exchange' and the 'Stop Sell' date will be September 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFG8 - Liverpool Corporation Waterworks and its successors have provided a public water supply and sewerage and sewage treatment services to the city of Liverpool, England. In 1625 water was obtained from a single well and delivered by cart, but as the town grew, companies supplied water to homes through pipes. There were two main companies by the 1840s, but the water supply was intermittent, and there was general dissatisfaction with the service. Liverpool Corporation decided that such an important service should be provided by a public body, and sought to take over the water supply companies.
A series of Acts of Parliament were obtained, the first being the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846, which created three key posts, the Medical Officer of Health, the Inspector of Nuisances, and the Borough Engineer. The latter post was filled by James Newlands, a visionary man who defined the role of the Borough Engineer, to be copied by many other towns and cities. He set about creating large scale maps of Liverpool, building a water-based sewerage system, making provision for bath houses, wash houses, swimming lessons, minimum sizes for rooms, paving and street lighting. The sewage was emptied into the River Mersey for the tides to take away, but he saw this as an interim measure, with a sewage treatment works being required. This part of his vision was not implemented until the 1980s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ36M - Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction opened in 2012, a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard in the city's Titanic Quarter where the RMS Titanic was built. It tells the stories of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912, and her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. The building contains more than 12,000 square metres (130,000 sq ft) of floor space, most of which is occupied by a series of galleries, private function rooms and community facilities.
Titanic Belfast is owned by the Maritime Belfast Trust and commercially operated by Titanic Belfast Limited under a 25-year operator agreement which commenced in 2011.
The building is located on Queen's Island, an area of land at the entrance of Belfast Lough which was reclaimed from the water in the mid-19th century. It was used for many years by the shipbuilders Harland and Wolff, who built huge slipways and graving docks to accommodate the simultaneous construction of the Olympic and Titanic. The decline of shipbuilding in Belfast left much of the area derelict. Most of the disused structures on the island were demolished. A number of heritage features were given listed status, including the Olympic and Titanic slipways and graving docks, as well as the iconic Samson and Goliath cranes.
The derelict land was renamed the Titanic Quarter in 2001 and was earmarked for regeneration. Development rights over 185 acres was subsequently bought by Harcourt Developments at a cost of £47 million, with 23 more acres set aside for a science park. The redevelopment plans included houses, hotels and entertainment amenities plus a maritime heritage museum and science centre. In 2005, plans were announced to build a museum dedicated to Titanic to attract tourists to the area, with the aim of completing it by 2012 to mark the centenary of Titanic's maiden voyage and sinking.

William Foster & Co. was a Lincoln company in the early 20th century and was instrumental in the invention of the tank - a machine that is said to have cut short World War 1 and saved millions of lives.

Edward, Richard and Peter were the sons of Edward Chrimes senior, a plumber and glazier. In the same year Edward Chrimes junior patented the 'high pressure loose valve screw-down cock', fore runner of the modern domestic tap
His brother Richard returned from London initially on a temporary basis to run the company. He then entered into partnership with John Guest, with the company becoming known as Guest and Chrimes. In 1848 the firm also started making sluice valve bodies cast in one piece, and from 1849 they manufactured patented New York style fire hydrants, which were widely exported.
The first foundry, known as Butter Market Foundry, was situated close to the River Don and the Market Place. In the mid 1850s the firm was awarded a large contract for valve gear and plumbing equipment for the Madrid Water Company in Spain, which necessitated an expansion of manufacturing. A new larger site was purchased beside the River Don and in 1857 the present factory was built on Don Street on a previously open field. The firm now had the facility for casting and machining both brass and iron.
The premises of Guest and Chrimes were listed at Grade II in February 1986. In 1999 the complex closed. All the post-1934 buildings were demolished in the early C21, having gone by 2012. In July 2018 there was a fire in the front, eastern range. Subsequently the whole of the front office range, caretaker's house, eastern extension and part of the angled return were demolished, leaving eight bays attached to the long rear range with the water tower

It has been dubbed the Capital of the Peak, in reference to the Peak District, historically the upperland areas between the Saxon lands (below the River Trent) and the Vikings lands (which came as far south as Dore, Sheffield).
The town was established by the Normans in the 12th century, originally as a hunting lodge within the Forest of High Peak. This led to the French-derived name Chapel-en-le-Frith (chapel in the forest). (It appears in an English form in a Latin record as 'Chapell in the ffryth', in 1401.) The population at the 2011 census was 8,635
Although most of the area is outside the National Park boundary, the town is in the western part of the Peak District. To the north and south lie the Dark Peak highlands, which are made up of millstone grit and are heather-covered moorlands, rugged and bleak. These include Chinley Churn and South Head with, a little further off, Kinder Scout, which looms above the whole area. To the east is the gentler and more pastoral White Peak, consisting largely of limestone grasslands, nevertheless with spectacular bluffs and the occasional gorge. Combs Moss, a gritstone 'edge', dominates the valley in which Chapel lies from the south and Eccles Pike rises sharply above the town to its west and provides a commanding 360° viewpoint.

It is situated on the River Goyt, 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Manchester, 7 miles (11 km) north of Buxton, 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Macclesfield and 28 miles (45 km) west of Sheffield. It had a population of 6,455 at the 2011 census, including Furness Vale, Horwich End, Bridgemont, Fernilee, Stoneheads and Taxal.
The River Goyt formed the historical boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire. The present town of Whaley Bridge was divided into smaller towns in both counties. Historical records show that, in 1316, on the Cheshire side there were Taxal, Yeardsley and Whaley
the last two were combined into one district of Yeardsley-cum-Whaley. The Derbyshire side consisted only of Fernilee, which included the villages of Shallcross and Horwich. This side was in the parish of Hope and was part of the Forest of High Peak, while the Cheshire side was part of the Forest of Macclesfield. From 1796, Taxal and Yeardsley were effectively joined in that the Jodrell family was the main landowner in both towns, although the administration of these remained separate until 1936
Whaley Bridge continues to expand as new housing is built, but retains the character of a small town. As the self-styled Gateway to the Goyt, it attracts tourists, mainly walkers, but has not become dominated by the tourist industry, unlike some other local towns and villages. Although we might think of Wrexham as a largely industrial town, with the Brymbo district as its economic powerhouse through much of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution in north Wales was actually something of a damp squib. A. H. Dodd's classic text on the subject, first published in the 1920s, explained some of the reasons why: remote sites and poor communications restricted trade to the local area, whereas the coal and iron of south Wales had access to deep-sea ports (giving particularly direct access to the lucrative Irish market). The collieries west of Wrexham, old, smaller-scale workings on shallow seams, were a world away from the deep mines of the Rhondda, and Brymbo's steelworks was unusual in its hilly, land-locked site. By the 1900s many of the area's coal and iron operations had ceased.
The small-scale and localised development of industry in the district led to a distinctive landscape, where a patchwork of agricultural land was intermingled with small collieries, related industries such as brickworks, and villages spreading across former areas of common land. The last of these smaller scale industrial sites survived through to the 1950s, 60s and 70s
in Brymbo, a particularly interesting one lasted until the 1980s. There are now few buildings near Pentresaeson crossroads, and there were never very many, but you can still see one of the main landmarks of the immediate area, the old Taylor Brothers iron foundry and its distinctive chimney, just down the township road to Bwlchgwyn alongside the bed of the former Minera railway line. Back in the 19th century this would have been a good site for a small ironworks, with reliable supplies of coal in the immediate vicinity, a tributary stream of the Gwenfro running nearby and, from the 1840s, the railway giving vital access

Homeless Jesus was designed by Timothy Schmalz, a Canadian sculptor and devout Catholic. It depicts Jesus as a homeless person, sleeping on a park bench. His face and hands are obscured, hidden under a blanket, but crucifixion wounds on his feet reveal his identity. The statue has been described as a visual translation of the Gospel of Matthew passage in which Jesus tells his disciples, as you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me. Schmalz intended for the bronze sculpture to be provocative, admitting, That's essentially what the sculpture is there to do. It's meant to challenge people. He offered the first casts to St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, but both churches declined. One spokesperson for St. Michael's said the church declined because appreciation was not unanimous and it was undergoing restoration. The cast intended for St. Michael's was installed at Regis College, the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto. Similarly, a spokesperson for St. Patrick's complimented the work but declined purchasing the cast due to ongoing renovations

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA83 - The Zündapp Bella is a motor scooter manufactured by motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp from 1953 to 1964. Approximately 130,000 Bella scooters were sold, with engine sizes ranging from 150 cc to 200 cc.
The design of the Bella was heavily influenced by that of the Parilla Levriere, also known as the Parilla Greyhound. Along with being similar in general appearance, both designs have prominent air tunnels along the centreline of the scooter to allow fresh air to cool the engine without a fan.
Early Bella with kick starter and telescopic fork
As introduced in 1953, the Bella had a 146 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine, 12 inch wheels, 6 V electrics, a kick starter, and an undamped telescopic fork. The fuel tank was mounted under the seat.
A version of the Bella called the Suburbanette was made for the United States market from 1953 to 1954. The Suburbanette was stripped of the body panels enclosing the engine. 370 Suburbanettes were sold. An export version of the last 150cc Bella, the R154K (K for kickstarter), with higher Western (buckhorn) bars and no dynastarter, came to the United States in the later 1950s.[10]
A 197 cc (12.0 cu in) engine producing 10 hp (7.5 kW) became available in May 1954. The front suspension was later changed from a telescopic fork to an Earles-type leading link fork with a single suspension unit on left side of the fork. Later Bella scooters also had 12 V electricals powered by two 6 V batteries.[citation needed] Electric starters also became available on the Bella.
The Bella was imported into the United Kingdom by Ambassador Motorcycles, and into the United States by International Motorcycle Company.

This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, \u00a32.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was 'the sweet leaf.' ('Sweetleaf' is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!

The confectionery manufacturer was established in East London in 1748 by Miss Elizabeth Batger. The Batger family were leading sugar refiners in Britain and by the early-twentieth century became the largest jam and confectionery makers. Batger's had multiple factories, but the main factory was located on Broad Street in Stephany, which manufactured jams, bakery assortments, sweets and toffee. However, their most popular products were Chinese figs, Silmos Lollies, Jersey Caramels and John Peel marmalade, which were marketed to the public using imaginative and entertaining advertisements.
During the First World War, Batger's supplied the British army with jam. However, by 1940 the Stephany factory had been destroyed by bombing, forcing the company to move outside London's city core to 44 Clapham, Common South Side. The Clapham factory was known for producing Harlequin Christmas Crackers and cake decorations. In 1970, the company was acquired by Needlers Ltd., a confectionery manufacturer, which led to the closing of the Clapham factory a year later. Needlers Ltd. was later sold to Ashbury Confectionery Ltd. The last original Batger products were discontinued in 2000. For convenience, this tour will visit the Batger factory that was located at 566 Cable Street, which is currently an arts studio.
