The ECHO teamed up with Virgin Trains to help celebrate the firm's 20th birthday and invited people to come up with a name for one of their iconic Pendolinos, used on the West Coast mainline between Lime Street and Euston.
Other shortlisted suggestions for the new name included Mighty Mersey, Pride of Liverpool, Merseyside Express and Liver Bird.
Arif Mahmood, Virgin Trains station manager for Liverpool Lime Street said the response to the competition had been overwhelming.

Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.

Harrison designed the exchange in the Classical style. It had two storeys above a basement and was constructed in Runcorn stone. The cost, ?20,000, was paid for in advance by 400 members who bought ?50 shares and paid ?30 each to buy the site. The semi-circular north fa??ade had fluted Doric columns. The exchange room where business was conducted covered 812 square yards. The ground floor also contained the members' library with more than 15,000 books. The basement housed a newsroom lit by a dome and plate-glass windows, its ceiling was supported by a circle of Ionic pillars spaced 15 feet from the walls. The first-floor dining-room was accessed by a geometrical staircase. The exchange opened to celebrate of the birthday of George III in 1809. It also contained other anterooms and offices.
As the cotton trade continued to expand, larger premises were required and its extension was completed in 1849. The Exchange was run by a committee of notable Manchester industrialists. From 1855 to 1860 the committee was chaired by Edmund Buckley.
The second exchange was replaced by a third designed by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England. The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. Manchester's cotton dealers and manufacturers trading from the Royal Exchange earned the city the name, Cottonopolis

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is an active Catholic church. The parish was established and served by Benedictine monks from Ampleforth Abbey, but following the withdrawal of Ampleforth Abbey from the parish in 2012, it was served by the priest from St Benedict's Church, Warrington. From November 2015, the church has been owned and served by priests from the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP) as a shrine church dedicated to the celebration of the sacraments of the pre-Vatican II form of the Roman Rite. It is well known for the beauty and reverence of its liturgy.
The parish was established from St Alban's Church, Warrington by the Benedictine priests
The church was designed by E. W. Pugin and its construction started in 1875, just before Pugin's death. It was completed by Peter Paul Pugin in 1877
The church was opened on Thursday 30 August 1877. The splendid reredos and rose window were blessed on 1 November 1885. The very tall and slender southwest tower, a departure from the original design, was designed by Pugin & Pugin and built by Travis & Wevill of Liverpool in 1907. A northeast chapel, the First World War Memorial Chapel, designed by Frederick Walters was added in 1923

Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Since 1994 the bridge has been illuminated at night by floodlights. Repairs to chloride corrosion of the bridge's deck were carried out in the early 21st century using an innovative electrolytic method

In 1901, he was staying in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. He started as a peddler, then set up as a general outfitter in Chesterfield in 1903 selling readymade suits bought from a wholesaler.[2][3] Following his marriage to Sophie Marks in 1909 the name of the company was changed from M. Burton to Burton & Burton. On the birth of twin boys in (1917) he gave his name as Montague Maurice Burton.
He died while speaking after a dinner in Leeds on 21 September 1952. The funeral was at the Harrogate Synagogue (some sources say Chapeltown) and he was interred at Gildersome.
?The Tailor of Taste'
When Montague Burton became a limited company in 1917, it was registered as ?Montague Burton the Tailor of Taste Ltd'. The slogan, as part of Burton's name, formed part of firm's logo, appearing on fascias, parapets, floors, and even on ventilation grilles.
Tiles and Mosaics
The entrance lobbies of many Burton shops had mosaic floors in the early-to-mid 20th century, and Burton was no exception. These sometimes included the popular Burton slogan: ?Let Burton Dress You'. This also appears in a black and red glazed terracotta panel on the side elevation of the branch in Abergavenny (1937). Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds

Plans to force owners of flats covered in flammable cladding to pay to make their homes safe have left leaseholders feeling sickened.
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick announced on Wednesday that the government would pay to take dangerous cladding off buildings more than 18m or six storeys high.
But for those whose homes fall below that height, the government is only offering long-term loans to pay for the work.
For residents of The Decks in Runcorn, where three of the six blocks are below 18m high, this will mean paying up to ?50 per month more on top of already soaring insurance bills.
The announcement has left leaseholders outraged after the government previously promised they would not have to pay anything for removal of the dangerous cladding that has left them living in fear in flats that are now worthless.
Julie Fraser, one of the leaseholders and a member of campaign group Liverpool Cladiators, said: Personally I feel sickened by the announcement. As a campaigner, I feel I have let people down. I am not responsible for any of these issues. This announcement is incredibly insensitive and insufficient.
Ms Fraser's case was mentioned in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon as Labour's shadow housing secretary Thangam Debbonaire described the plans as an injustice and said the government had betrayed their promises that leaseholders wouldn't pay for the building safety crisis.
Ms Debbonaire said: What does the housing secretary say to Julie in Runcorn who lives in a flat with dangerous HPL cladding? Her block is under 18m so she's unable to access funding promised so far.
She lives in the same development as buildings with the exact same cladding but over 18m so they will be able to access the fund.
Why should this arbitrary 18m height limit mean the difference between a safe home and financial ruin?

Queen of Mercia
This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been, i.e. in the direction of the railway bridge.
Designed and made by sculptor Phil Bewes who now works with his partner Diane Gorvin. They did other work in the Runcorn area in the 1980's, especially at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. They are now based in the Forest of Dean area. They have a lovely website at www.bewsgorvin.co.uk

In 1902, more library and reading room space was needed. The Runcorn Free Library Committee applied to Andrew Carnegie to fund the extension. Carnegie had provided grants for many other libraries in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Carnegie replied in 1903 that he had received an overwhelming number of applications. In 1904 Carnegie refused the grant as he believed the income of the Library Committee would not support larger premises. An amended application was made and Carnegie gifted ?3,000 in November 1904 to erect a new public library stipulating that a site must also be given for the building. At a Runcorn Urban District Council meeting in June 1905 it was decided to carry out the plans for the library alteration and extension using the ?3,000 gifted by Carnegie. An exterior wall of Waterloo House formed an interior wall of the extended library, both buildings housing the library

In 1904 Carnegie refused the grant as he believed the income of the Library Committee would not support larger premises. An amended application was made and Carnegie gifted ?3,000 in November 1904 to erect a new public library stipulating that a site must also be given for the building. At a Runcorn Urban District Council meeting in June 1905 it was decided to carry out the plans for the library alteration and extension using the ?3,000 gifted by Carnegie. An exterior wall of Waterloo House formed an interior wall of the extended library, both buildings housing the library
the lending department in Waterloo House, the reading rooms and reference department in the new building.
The Carnegie Library was also designed by James Wilding, surveyor and water engineer to the Runcorn Urban District Council

It comprised two stations A and B commissioned in 1921 and 1941. The station supplied electricity to commercial, industrial and domestic users over a wide area of 95 square miles around the River Mersey including Widnes, Ellesmere Port and Runcorn.
History
In 1911 the Salt Union built a vacuum evaporating plant at Runcorn to produce salt from brine. Steam was generated to drive turbo-alternators. The exhaust steam from the turbines was used to evaporate brine. Only a portion of this energy was used in the salt works
the Salt Union obtained parliamentary authority to provide a public supply of electricity. This was through two Electric Lighting Orders: the Runcorn Electric Lighting Order 1910 and the Widnes Electric Lighting Order 1910, both these Orders were authorised by Parliament under the Electric Lighting Orders Confirmation (No.1) Act 1910 (10 Edw. 7 & 1 Geo. 5, c. lxxv). A new company, the Mersey Power Company Limited, was formed in 1911 to operate the public electricity supply. In 1918 the Company resolved to build a large generating station at Percival Lane, Runcorn (53?19'53N 2?45'25W) to meet the expanding demand for electricity. The company had local industrialists among its major shareholders and was able to promote and encourage the use of electricity by local industry

Ethelfleda, Queen of Mercia, Credited With Founding Runcorn in The 10th Century. The earliest recorded event in Runcorn's history is the building of a fort to protect the northern frontier of Ethelfleda's kingdom - Mercia against the Vikings in 915.
We placed her at the beginning of ?Runcorn' and above the Railway bridge (Ethelfleda Bridge) that marks the site of the fort. Depicted in the style of an illuminated letter from the Saxon Chronicles where this event is mentioned.
The letter ?R' is formed by Ethelfleda sending the Viking ship away. The ship is also copied from an illustration in the Chronicles, with the rune for the north star atop the mast.
A strong, female heroine, she was well known for avoiding bloodshed where possible but willing to physically join the fighting herself if needed.

Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

It is located in the city centre on the land bounded by St Ann's Square, Exchange Street, Market Street, Cross Street and Old Bank Street. The building remained empty until 1973 when it was used to house a theatre company (69 Theatre Company)
the company performed in a temporary theatre but there were plans for a permanent theatre whose cost was then estimated at ?400,000. The Royal Exchange Theatre was founded in 1976 by five artistic directors: Michael Elliott, Caspar Wrede, Richard Negri, James Maxwell and Braham Murray. It was opened by Laurence Olivier on 15 September 1976
The building was damaged on 15 June 1996 when an IRA bomb exploded in Corporation Street less than 50 yards away. The refurbished theatre re-opened on 30 November 1998 by Prince Edward. The opening production, Stanley Houghton's Hindle Wakes was the play that should have opened the day the bomb was exploded

The cost, ?20,000, was paid for in advance by 400 members who bought ?50 shares and paid ?30 each to buy the site. The semi-circular north fa??ade had fluted Doric columns. The exchange room where business was conducted covered 812 square yards. The ground floor also contained the members' library with more than 15,000 books. The basement housed a newsroom lit by a dome and plate-glass windows, its ceiling was supported by a circle of Ionic pillars spaced 15 feet from the walls. The first-floor dining-room was accessed by a geometrical staircase. The exchange opened to celebrate of the birthday of George III in 1809. It also contained other anterooms and offices.
As the cotton trade continued to expand, larger premises were required and its extension was completed in 1849. The Exchange was run by a committee of notable Manchester industrialists. From 1855 to 1860 the committee was chaired by Edmund Buckley.
The second exchange was replaced by a third designed by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England. The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications.
As with all X-rays, mammograms use doses of ionizing radiation to create images. These images are then analyzed for abnormal findings. It is usual to employ lower-energy X-rays, typically Mo (K-shell x-ray energies of 17.5 and 19.6 keV) and Rh (20.2 and 22.7 keV) than those used for radiography of bones. Ultrasound, ductography, positron emission mammography (PEM), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are adjuncts to mammography. Ultrasound is typically used for further evaluation of masses found on mammography or palpable masses not seen on mammograms. Ductograms are still used in some institutions for evaluation of bloody nipple discharge when the mammogram is non-diagnostic. MRI can be useful for further evaluation of questionable findings, as well as for screening pre-surgical evaluation in patients with known breast cancer, in order to detect additional lesions that might change the surgical approach, for example, from breast-conserving lumpectomy to mastectomy. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4469547119 - 'Fiddlers Ferry has been a landmark visable from Runcorn, Warrington and Widnes since the early 1970's. Its a coal fired power station on the banks of the Mersey River, which supplies all its cooling water. In recent years it has been adapted to also burn bio-mass. It can generate nearly 2,000 Megawatts.
Living in Glossop I remember massive freight trains of coal trucks coming over Woodhead and the Dinting viaduct headed for Fiddlers Ferry. Many trains overnighted at the sidings at Gamesley. Fuel for it these days comes mainly from Liverpool docks. Sulphur emissions are reduced by a new FGD plant installed in 2008. Carbon Dioxide is still pumped out of the chimneys as before though to be added to our delicate climate.
Its eight towers can be seen from various high points, including here at the cemetary at Pewtersspear, above Stockton Heath. A modern pub called the Eight Towers (not one of my usual haunts), is located only a short distance away.

It is a MCR25.0B assembly.
The thinner copper tracks are 17 microns wide with the gaps and wider tracks 25 microns wide. This has been taken with a 20mm Olympus macro lens with Canon to Olympus adapter.
Alumina is the most mature of the engineering ceramics, offering excellent electrical insulation properties together with high hardness and good wear resistance but relatively low strength and fracture toughness.
Aluminas are generally white but are sometimes pink (88% alumina) or brown (96% Alumina). The colour is derived from either the sintering additives or impurities in the raw materials.
Dynamic-Ceramic produces a range of alumina from 96% - 99.9% purity. Alumina has a high melting point, high hardness and high mechanical strength, although mechanical strength is reduced at temperatures above 1000\u00b0C. Due to the relatively large coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal shock resistance is reduced.
Alumina is an electrically insulating material, with a high electrical resistivity, increasing with purity. Good chemical stability of alumina, leads to a high corrosion resistance. It is insoluble in water and only slightly soluble in strong acid and
alkaline solutions. Thus making it ideal for use in rugged component environments such as on a battlefield, in space or the stratosphere.
On the board the underside tracks can just be seen. This was a product of ICI in Runcorn and the metals etc were layed down using a phot-resist process. Quality control was by microscope.

The earliest reference to the worshipping community at Great Budworth appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 where we are told of the presence of a priest and so can infer a worshipping community and probably a church building. Of these early days we can only catch glimpses through the mists of time but one point is clear, the Pre-Reformation history of the church is dominated by the Augustinian Canons of Norton Priory, Runcorn. The Canons were given the church and living of Great Budworth in 1130 by William Fitz Nigel, Constable of Chester. Later they received the gift of a third of all the land in the township of Great Budworth from Geoffrey De Dutton, to add to the already substantial holdings of land they had been given by local people, keen to save their souls and those of their loved ones by endowing the Canons in return for burials and perpetual prayers, a common practice in the middle ages. The Canons created the present church and dominated both the religious and economic life of the township. The oldest part of the church, the Lady Chapel, dates from the fourteenth century and most of the rest from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries showing that the Canons were very active in keeping the church not only in a good state of preservation, but also in continuing to beautify and modernise it. With the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the highly decorated church of the Augustinian Canons was transformed, and by 1600 it had become a white-washed preaching hall from which a. series of Puritan ministers would, throughout the seventeenth century, preach the Gospel and convert the parish from a religious conservatism to a radical Protestantism.

It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, and was initially known simply as the Runcorn Bridge or Runcorn?Widnes Bridge. In 1975?77 it was widened, after which it was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway. The bridge has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed structure
The new bridge had to allow the passage of shipping along the Manchester Ship Canal. Many ideas were considered, including a new transporter bridge or a swing bridge. These were considered to be impractical and it was decided that the best solution was a high-level bridge upstream from the railway bridge. This would allow the least obstruction to shipping and would also be at the narrowest crossing point.
The first plan for a high-level bridge was a truss bridge with three or five spans, giving a 24 feet (7 m) dual carriageway with a cycle track and footpaths. This was abandoned because it was too expensive, and because one of the piers would be too close to the wall of the ship canal. The next idea was for a suspension bridge with a span of 1,030 feet (314 m) between the main towers with a 24 feet (7 m) single carriageway and a 6-foot (2 m) footpath. However aerodynamic tests on models of the bridge showed that, while the bridge itself would be stable, the presence of the adjacent railway bridge would cause severe oscillation.
The finally accepted design was for a steel through arch bridge with a 30-foot (9 m) single carriageway. The design of the bridge is similar to that of Sydney Harbour Bridge but differs from it in that the side spans are continuous with the main span rather than being separate from them. All Saints Church, Thelwall, is in the village of Thelwall, Cheshire, England. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.

The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by J. Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.

The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill.[5] The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros.[1] From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6NHM - Spike Island is an island in the estuary of the River Mersey, in North West England, flanked by the Sankey Canal. It is a reclaimed toxic waste site, considered a birthplace of the British chemical industry, and forms a part of Widnes in the Halton borough of Cheshire.
Its maze of abandoned chemical factories, rail lines, canal and industrial dockage, and industrial pollution, which had declined into a rust belt toxic wilderness, was reclaimed as woodland, wetlands and green space between 1975 and 1982. A surviving warehouse is now the home of the Catalyst Museum, the only science museum in the UK solely devoted to chemistry.
Spike Island was the site of a famous outdoor concert by The Stone Roses in May 1990. A film about the concert was released in 2013, and is called Spike Island.

In 1901, he was staying in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. He started as a peddler, then set up as a general outfitter in Chesterfield in 1903 selling readymade suits bought from a wholesaler.[2][3] Following his marriage to Sophie Marks in 1909 the name of the company was changed from M. Burton to Burton & Burton. On the birth of twin boys in (1917) he gave his name as Montague Maurice Burton.
He died while speaking after a dinner in Leeds on 21 September 1952. The funeral was at the Harrogate Synagogue (some sources say Chapeltown) and he was interred at Gildersome.
?The Tailor of Taste'
When Montague Burton became a limited company in 1917, it was registered as ?Montague Burton the Tailor of Taste Ltd'. The slogan, as part of Burton's name, formed part of firm's logo, appearing on fascias, parapets, floors, and even on ventilation grilles.
Tiles and Mosaics
The entrance lobbies of many Burton shops had mosaic floors in the early-to-mid 20th century, and Burton was no exception. These sometimes included the popular Burton slogan: ?Let Burton Dress You'. This also appears in a black and red glazed terracotta panel on the side elevation of the branch in Abergavenny (1937). Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds

Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
