Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXAC - A close-up view of a decorative sign at the entrance to Society Street Indoor Market in Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The blackboard-style sign features hand-lettered text reading Welcome to Society St Indoor Market and is decorated with a bright pink artificial rose, adding a friendly and informal touch to the market entrance. The sign hangs above a doorway leading into the indoor market space.
Society Street Indoor Market is part of the city's independent retail and community trading scene, providing space for small businesses, artisans, and local traders within the city centre. Handwritten signage such as this reflects the informal, creative character often associated with indoor markets and independent retail environments, contrasting with more uniform high-street branding.
Photographed in daylight, the image highlights the personal, welcoming atmosphere of the market and is suitable for editorial and commercial uses relating to local markets, independent retail, small businesses, urban regeneration, tourism in Northern Ireland, and community-led commercial spaces.
Location: Society Street Indoor Market, Society Street, Derry / Londonderry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, BT48.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP6R - This image shows a blue fabric banner displayed inside St Mary's Priory and Parish Church in Lancaster. The banner bears the words St Mary Lancaster and prominently features the Red Rose of Lancashire, the historic county emblem that has long symbolised Lancashire's identity and heritage.
Church banners such as this combine religious tradition with local and regional symbolism, reinforcing the close relationship between parish life and place. The inclusion of the Lancashire rose reflects the church's role not only as a centre of worship but also as a focal point for civic and county identity within Lancaster.
St Mary's Priory, located close to Lancaster Castle, has medieval origins and remains an active Anglican parish church. Its interior contains a variety of historic and contemporary furnishings that reflect centuries of religious practice and community continuity.
Photographed indoors against stone columns and lit church architecture, the image provides a documentary record of Anglican material culture and local symbolism. It is well suited for editorial use covering English parish churches, religious heritage, Lancashire identity, ecclesiastical textiles, and the intersection of faith and regional history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNJ6 - This image shows entry signage and turnstiles at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, home of Warrington Wolves, located on Mike Gregory Way in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA2 7NE). The blue sign clearly identifies Turnstiles 1?3 and indicates ticket-only access, reflecting standard matchday crowd control procedures.
Professional rugby league stadiums rely on clearly marked entry points and controlled access to manage supporter flow, ensure safety, and comply with licensing and security regulations. The signage includes club branding and is mounted against the stadium's red-brick exterior, combining functional information with team identity.
Such turnstiles are used during Super League fixtures and other events hosted at the stadium, forming part of the wider infrastructure that supports professional sport in the UK. The absence of spectators suggests the image was taken outside match hours, allowing the signage and built environment to be documented clearly.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rugby league, sports infrastructure, stadium operations, ticketing systems, crowd management, and the organisation of professional sporting events in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7H1 - The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JXE6 - Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom.
When considering the height of the building, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool (including antennas).
As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age, the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020.
The tower takes its name from the main radio station that operates from it, Radio City and its sister station Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBK1 - The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, commonly known as York Minster, is the cathedral of York, North Yorkshire, England, and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the third-highest office of the Church of England (after the monarch as Supreme Governor and the Archbishop of Canterbury), and is the mother church for the Diocese of York and the Province of York. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of York. The title minster is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches, and serves now as an honorific title
the word Metropolitical in the formal name refers to the Archbishop of York's role as the Metropolitan bishop of the Province of York. Services in the minster are sometimes regarded as on the High Church or Anglo-Catholic end of the Anglican continuum.
The minster was completed in 1472 after several centuries of building. It is devoted to Saint Peter, and has a very wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic quire and east end and Early English North and South transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the north transept is the Five Sisters window, each lancet being over 53 feet (16.3 m) high. The south transept contains a rose window, while the West Window contains a heart-shaped design colloquially known as The Heart of Yorkshire.
On 9 July 1984, York Minster suffered a serious fire in its south transept during the early morning hours. Firefighters made a decision to deliberately collapse the roof of the South Transept by pouring tens of thousands of gallons of water onto it, in order to save the rest of the building from destruction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X6W - This image shows the exterior of the Stone Roses Bar, a well-known music-themed bar located on King Street in York. The venue is named after the influential British band The Stone Roses and reflects the continuing cultural legacy of late-1980s and early-1990s indie and Madchester music.
The red brick fa??ade is decorated with distinctive signage, posters, and window graphics referencing British alternative music culture. The building's historic urban fabric contrasts with the modern graphic artwork and band imagery, linking York's traditional streetscape with contemporary nightlife and popular music heritage.
Bars such as this play an important role in city-centre evening economies, attracting locals, students, and visitors interested in alternative music scenes and themed venues. The Stone Roses Bar is particularly associated with indie, Britpop, and guitar-based music, often hosting DJs and events that celebrate British rock history.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents the venue as part of York's wider cultural and nightlife landscape. It is well suited to editorial use covering British music culture, urban leisure, themed bars, tourism, and the influence of iconic bands on local identity and commercial spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFEM - Winston Churchill Memorial Garden is a small urban park discreetly tucked behind the Lower High Street shops. The gardens have a number of historical elements such as the formal rose garden, pergola, clipped yew avenue and St Mary's Mission building. It is still possible to see some of the headstones along the northern perimeter wall. Find out more about the history of the park.
Rose garden
In the centre of the rose garden stands a drinking fountain which is surrounded by words, phrases and simple line drawings gathered from local children and adults to symbolise how they feel about the gardens. The images are pressed into blue engineering bricks, once used on the railway line that runs parallel to the gardens. The project was jointly funded by Cheltenham Borough Council, the Lower High Street Partnership and the Regional Arts Council.
Play area
The fenced play area with its woodland trail, living tree sculptures and spring bulbs has a variety of new play equipment. The play equipment was chosen by pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School and provides play facilities for a wider age range. New equipment includes a multi-activity unit, roundabout, inclusive play springie, swings, a pole spin and talk tubes.
Informal recreational area
The area south of the play area is used for informal recreation. The eastern boundary has been planted with native dog rose and wild flowers to enhance the urban park for wildlife and people alike.

Of a banner taking its place in the world
A long unravelling and a fine unwinding,

Or an origami of ideas hugely unfolding
As, caught by the breeze, image and language
Spread their twin messages into the air.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108DB - Coal Drops Yard is a shopping complex and privately owned public space that forms part of the King's Cross Central development scheme in London, England. The development was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and opened in October 2018
The two Victorian coal drops sheds were used to receive coal from South Yorkshire and trans-ship it to narrowboats on the Regents Canal and to horse-drawn carts
coal drops were redundant and fell into decay. They were used as warehouse units
one was gutted by fire in 1985 and another used by Bagley's nightclub, which closed in 2007. The night clubs complemented a vibrant night life of easy drug access, raves and prostitution.
The Regent's Canal was named in 1820 after the Prince Regent, who became George IV the same year. After his demise, the Kings Cross monument was raised at the junction of New Road and Battlebridge Road (Euston Road and York Way)
In 1986 the rave scene started in London. Disused warehouses were used to stage illegal raves, a form of partying fuelled by House music from Chicago and the illicit drug ecstasy. The scene developed and spawned several legal clubs such as The Clink, Shoom and Heaven and by the early-to-mid 1990s became centred on three bars in King's Cross. There was Billy Reilly's bar, 'Fabric' under the arches of the Coal Offices (which inspired a successor club, also called Fabric), 'The Cross' and 'Bagley's', which took over three floors at the southern end of the Eastern Coal Drops
Argent Group, the overall developer for the King's Cross Central site, appointed Thomas Heatherwick as architect for the redevelopment of the Coal Drop Yards as a retail park in 2014. Heatherwick worked in conjunction with engineers Arup, and the plans were approved in December 2015. BAM Nuttall undertook the construction work, which started in February 2016, following a two-year pre-construction phase to survey the condition of the Victorian era buildings and carry out demolition work as necessary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A6YWGC - MIKE Amesbury is calling for an urgent investigation into flooding which hit Northwich over the weekend. The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New ?7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre ? which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane ? in 2000 and again in 2012.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9AER - Prosecco is an Italian white wine. Prosecco controlled designation of origin can be spumante (sparkling wine), frizzante (semi-sparkling wine), or tranquillo (still wine). It is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15 per cent of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name Prosecco is derived from the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less expensive substitute of Champagne. It is also a key ingredient of venetian spritz, a popular cocktail in northern Italy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5W4 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTDP - The Jewellery Quarter is an area of central Birmingham, UK. Situated in the north western area of the Birmingham City Centre, there is a population of around 19,000 people in a 1.07-square-kilometre (264-acre) area.
The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Because the definition of a jeweller was not explained in the directory, it is thought that it may contain many irregularities and the number of actual jewellers may be lower. It is thought that by the start of the 19th century, there were around 12 jewellery manufacturing companies, employing approximately 400 people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DGA760 - Strawberry Fields is a 2.5-acre (1.0 ha) landscaped section in New York City's Central Park, designed by the landscape architect Bruce Kelly, that is dedicated to the memory of former Beatles member John Lennon. It is named after the Beatles' song Strawberry Fields Forever, written by Lennon. The song itself is named for the former Strawberry Field children's home in Liverpool, England, located near Lennon's childhood home
In April 1981, after John Lennon was murdered, a patch of land in Central Park near the Dakota was named Strawberry Fields in Lennon's honor. That August, it was announced that Strawberry Fields would be completely renovated and landscaped, since at the time, Strawberry Fields was located in an isolated median between West Drive and two slip roads of 72nd Street. Yoko Ono requested that the rebuilt memorial be a living memorial rather than a statue
according to NYC Parks landscape architect Arne Abramowitz, Ono believed that there are enough statues in Central Park.
The memorial was designed by Bruce Kelly, the chief landscape architect for the Central Park Conservancy. Construction on the project started in April 1984. Strawberry Fields was dedicated on what would have been Lennon's 45th birthday, October 9, 1985, by Ono and mayor Ed Koch.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6B2 - 9/11 memorial's fountains flow
The fountain, where the north tower of the World Trade Center once stood, was undergoing tests of the massive pumping systems that will blast 26,000 gallons a minute over the 30-foot deep black granite walls.
Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.
Construction of the memorial remains on schedule for its planned opening next Sept. 11 ? the 10th anniversary

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DC8D - Sugar is the generalized name for sweet, short-chain, soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used in food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources.
Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose (also known as dextrose), fructose and galactose. The table or granulated sugar most customarily used as food is sucrose, a disaccharide. (In the body, sucrose hydrolyses into fructose and glucose.) Other disaccharides include maltose and lactose. Longer chains of sugars are called oligosaccharides.
Chemically-different substances may also have a sweet taste, but are not classified as sugars. Some are used as lower-calorie food substitutes for sugar described as artificial sweeteners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE1M - Kingston upon Thames, also known as Kingston, is the principal settlement of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. It was the ancient market town where Saxon kings were crowned. Kingston is situated 10 miles (16.1 km) southwest of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan.
Kingston lies approximately 10 metres (33 ft) above sea level. Kingston was part of a large ancient parish in the county of Surrey and the town was an ancient borough, reformed in 1835. It has been the location of Surrey County Hall from 1893, extraterritorially in terms of local government administration since Kingston became part of Greater London in 1965. Most of the town centre is part of the KT1 postcode area, but some areas north of Kingston railway station have the postcode KT2 instead. The population of the town itself, comprising the four wards of Canbury, Grove, Norbiton and Tudor, was 43,013 in the 2011 census

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ETRXBT - In the United Kingdom, prostitution itself (the exchange of sexual services for money) is legal but a number of related activities, including soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling, owning or managing a brothel, pimping and pandering, are crimes.
It is illegal to buy sex from a person younger than 18, although the age of consent for non-commercial sex is 16.
In Edinburgh, estimates from Scot-Pep suggest there are about 700 indoor sex workers ? 200 in saunas, 350 independent escorts and 150 agency escorts as well as 80-100 women on the streets over a year.
33 women were arrested for soliciting in Edinburgh in 2010-11, and 21 the following year. Most of these arrest happen at the street and police mostly targets mostly the streetwalkers.
Prostitutes and Sex Workers
Edinburgh is well known for massage and sauna venues where you can find some girls for half an hour or an hour. Over the past years many sauna venues have been closed, but some still stay open, while more massage salons keep opening. Street prostitution is still active in Edinburg, but not nearly as common as in the past, because most streetwalkers have moved indoor and started working as an independent escorts. The sauna and massage parlours of Edinburgh function, in an unofficial way, as licensed bordellos. Punters here do not come just for a massage. They want, for the most part, some kind of sexual services.

The medieval structure, which was located at the west end of the Luckenbooths on the High Street in the Old Town, was first established in the 14th century by royal charter. Over the years it served a variety of purposes such as housing the Burgh Council, early meetings of the Estates of Scotland and the Court of Session. The Tolbooth was also the burgh's main gaol where public execution and torture were routinely conducted.
In 1817 the building, which had been rebuilt and renovated several times, was demolished.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DGHEFJ - Primula veris, the cowslip, common cowslip, or cowslip primrose (syn. Primula officinalis Hill), is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the primrose family Primulaceae. The species is native throughout most of temperate Europe and western Asia, and although absent from more northerly areas including much of northwest Scotland, it reappears in northernmost Sutherland and Orkney and in Scandinavia. This species frequently hybridizes with other Primulas such as the common primrose Primula vulgaris to form false oxlip (Primula ?? polyantha) which is often confused with true oxlip (Primula elatior), a much rarer plant.
Names
The common name cowslip may derive from the old English for cow dung, probably because the plant was often found growing amongst the manure in cow pastures. An alternative derivation simply refers to slippery or boggy ground
again, a typical habitat for this plant. The name cowslop derived from Old English still exists in some dialects, but the politer-sounding cowslip became standard in the 16th century.
The species name veris ('of spring', referring to the season) is the genitive case form of Latin ver ('spring'). However, primrose P. vulgaris, flowers earlier, from December to May in the British Isles.
Other historical common names include cuy lippe, herb peter, paigle or pagil, peggle, key flower, key of heaven, fairy cups, petty mulleins, crewel, buckles, palsywort, and plumrocks

I first encountered Chaka Khan at a vinyl record fair in the basement of a hotel in Piccadilly gardens Manchester in the early 1980's. There was a strawberry shaped picture disk of the Rufus and Chaka Khan on sale for £25 (Do you love what you feel). I was sure I had seen some in Rumbelows in Hyde a week before. I nipped on the bus, snapped up 7 copies and made a killing. It was some years later when she went solo I actually appreciated her music properly.
What Cha' Gonna Do for Me is the title track of the Gold certified third solo album by American R&
B/funk singer Chaka Khan. Born Yvette Marie Stevens
March 23, 1953, frequently known as the 'Queen of Funk', she is a 10-time Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter who gained fame in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band Rufus.
While still a member of the group in 1978, Khan embarked on a successful solo career. Her signature hits, both with Rufus and as a solo performer, include 'Tell Me Something Good', 'Sweet Thing' which she wrote for her then husband Richard Holland, 'Ain't Nobody', 'I'm Every Woman', 'I Feel for You' and 'Through the Fire'.
Hunched over an antique typewriter, tapping out a melodic metallic beat, Kaile Glick brings a literal meaning to ‘poetry of the streets’. With an air of funky wit, Kaile is a welcome guest on any street. She ventured here from Toronto, Canada to set up The Spontaneous Prose Store in London. Having been turned away from Covent Garden, because she ‘didn’t have a license to stand still’. Well thats Britain for you!

What a difference five days make eh?
A lot of people mistakenly regard the Liberals as the new kids on the block these days, while in reality at core they were the old guard with the Tories back in the late victorian era. When the left wing Labour party arrived, quite soon ping pong between Tory and Labour administrations have ensued.
While many councils are liberal led, however the first past the post system is an unfortunate barrier to seeing a majority liberal party prime minister at Westminster. One which the two main parties may be reluctant to dismantle if a hung parliament results tonight and Nick Clegg assumes his role as 'Kingmaker'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4587919792 - 'Few plants captivate a nation quite like the Japanese flowering cherry or 'cherry blossom'. Pick up a 100 yen coin and at any time of the year it reminds you of the Sakura.
In Japan cherry blossoms among other things symbolize clouds. This is due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition that is often associated with Buddhistic influence, and which is embodied in the concept of 'mono no aware' (the life of things). The association of the cherry blossom with 'mono no aware' dates back to 18th-century scholar Motoori Norinaga.
The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality. For this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect. The band Kagrra, which is associated with the visual kei movement, is an example of this latter phenomenon. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled 'Sakura', and several pop songs. The flower is also represented on all manner of consumer goods in Japan, including kimono, stationery, and dishware.
Cherry blossom is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love, affection and represents spring. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art.
At Himeji Castle Japan During World War II, the cherry blossom was used to motivate the Japanese people, to stoke nationalism and militarism among the populace. Japanese pilots would paint them on the sides of their planes before embarking on a suicide mission, or even take branches of the trees with them on their missions. There is a plane of this type in the Manchester museum of science of industry. My friend Josef Knocke always comes to mind when I look at it as does a particularly tasteless joke, that I would not repeat here for a family audience.
A cherry blossom painted on the side of the bomber symbolized the intensity and ephemerality of life. In this way, the aesthetic association was altered such that falling cherry petals came to represent the sacrifice of youth in suicide missions to honor the emperor. The government even encouraged the people to believe that the souls of downed warriors were reincarnated in the blossoms.
In its colonial enterprises, aparently imperial Japan often planted cherry trees as a means of 'claiming occupied territory as Japanese space'. Consider this as you pass below those lovely pink blossoms...

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6NHM - Spike Island is an island in the estuary of the River Mersey, in North West England, flanked by the Sankey Canal. It is a reclaimed toxic waste site, considered a birthplace of the British chemical industry, and forms a part of Widnes in the Halton borough of Cheshire.
Its maze of abandoned chemical factories, rail lines, canal and industrial dockage, and industrial pollution, which had declined into a rust belt toxic wilderness, was reclaimed as woodland, wetlands and green space between 1975 and 1982. A surviving warehouse is now the home of the Catalyst Museum, the only science museum in the UK solely devoted to chemistry.
Spike Island was the site of a famous outdoor concert by The Stone Roses in May 1990. A film about the concert was released in 2013, and is called Spike Island.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBKW - The White Rose of York (Latinised as rosa alba, blazoned as a rose argent) is a white heraldic rose which was adopted in the 14th century as a heraldic badge of the royal House of York. In modern times it is used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the white rose has religious connotations as (like the white lily) it represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, one of whose many titles in the Roman Catholic faith is the Mystical Rose of Heaven. In Christian liturgical iconography white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence, purity, joy and glory.
The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (1341?1402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. One of his elder brothers, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (1340?1399) adopted a red rose as a heraldic badge, the red rose of Lancaster. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688
In heraldry The Rose of York is blazoned as A rose argent barbed and seeded proper (a white rose with sepals and seeds in their natural colours). According to the College of Heralds, the heraldic rose may be used with either a petal at the top or if slightly rotated with a sepal at the top. Traditionally the rose is displayed with a petal at the top in the North Riding and West Riding but with a sepal at the top in the East Riding of Yorkshire

The Church stands not east-west but square to the Roman Road north through Carlisle (the A6, in town Blackfriars St). It is therefore of early foundation, perhaps before St Cuthbert's visit to Carlisle in 685. The present Church, probably the fourth on the site, dates from 1778.
It has a unique moving pulpit, a fourteenth century window, a window commemorating our hospitality to a Latvian Lutheran congregation, and a very attractive series of windows depicting the life of St Cuthbert. It is open every day during daylight hours. Our motto is: Christian Hospitality
