Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP36X - This image shows the Coleraine signal box, a traditional brick-built railway control structure located on Railway Road, Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Positioned next to the station and adjacent to the bus and rail interchange, the signal box plays a key role in managing train movements, signalling, and level crossings on this important section of the Northern Ireland rail network.
The structure features classic railway architecture, with an elevated glazed operating room providing clear sightlines over the tracks, along with visible barrier mechanisms and signalling equipment. A British railway crossing arm and associated safety infrastructure are prominent, illustrating the continued operational importance of the site.
Coleraine is a strategic rail junction, linking services between Belfast, Derry~Londonderry, and the north coast, and the signal box represents both the heritage and ongoing functionality of the region's rail system. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to rail transport, signalling systems, infrastructure management, public transport history, and Northern Ireland rail operations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64N03 - East Midlands Railway's special Rainbow Train celebrates Belper and Derby Pride
A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow ?swoosh' livery also features the tagline ?Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMTW - This image shows the illuminated neon sign for The Rolling Scones Cafe, located within God's Own Junkyard on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. The caf?? forms an integral part of the visitor experience at the venue, providing food and drink amid one of London's most distinctive collections of neon signage.
God's Own Junkyard is internationally recognised for its dense, immersive displays of vintage and custom-made neon signs, many of which have appeared in films, television, and music videos. The Rolling Scones Caf?? sits among this visual overload, serving visitors, photographers, and tourists who come to experience the space as both an art installation and a cultural attraction.
The sign itself uses flowing red neon script spelling The Rolling Scones, with a smaller illuminated Cafe panel beneath, mounted against industrial brickwork typical of former light-industrial buildings in the area. The contrast between utilitarian architecture and expressive neon typography reflects the wider character of the Junkyard, where commercial signage is recontextualised as art.
Photographed in daylight, the image highlights the continued relevance of neon signage in contemporary creative spaces. It is well suited to editorial use covering London cafes, independent hospitality, creative venues, neon art, cultural tourism, and the adaptive reuse of industrial estates in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J42 - This image shows Transport for Wales CAF Class 197 unit 197018 standing at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire. The train is operating a northbound service toward Holyhead, linking North West England with North Wales and the Isle of Anglesey.
The Class 197 fleet, built by CAF as part of the Civity family, represents a modernisation of diesel regional services in Wales and the border counties. Designed to replace older rolling stock, the trains offer improved accessibility, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency on long regional routes that are not fully electrified.
The photograph focuses on the cab end and coupling area of the unit, highlighting contemporary train design, lighting, and livery. Platform features such as the yellow safety line and tactile paving are visible, situating the scene within a busy mainline station environment that handles both long-distance and regional services.
Taken in daylight under the station canopy, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, modern rolling stock, regional connectivity, Welsh transport policy, and everyday passenger rail operations on routes linking England and Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7D - This long, wide panoramic image shows a green-liveried Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino standing at Crewe railway station, one of the most important junctions on the West Coast Main Line. The train carries prominent environmental branding reading Our Planet Means The World To Us, reflecting Avanti West Coast's sustainability and carbon-reduction messaging.
The Class 390 Pendolino fleet forms the backbone of high-speed electric intercity services linking London with the North West, West Midlands, North Wales, and Scotland. Known for their tilting capability, Pendolinos are designed to maintain higher speeds on curving mainline routes while remaining fully electric, reinforcing rail's role as a lower-carbon alternative to road and air travel.
The image's wide, side-on composition emphasises the length of the train and the bold green graphics applied across multiple carriages, making it particularly suitable for layouts requiring panoramic or banner-style imagery. The platform environment and partial station architecture situate the scene within an active mainline railway setting.
Photographed in daylight at platform level, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, sustainable travel, rolling-stock branding, climate messaging in public transport, and modern intercity rail operations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23BW - A weathered metal access sign on Hampstead Heath displaying the words Access to Horse Ride for Permit Holders Only beneath the crest of the Corporation of London. The sign regulates entry to a designated equestrian route across the heath, limiting use to authorised riders holding official permits.
Hampstead Heath is managed by the Corporation of London, one of the UK's oldest municipal authorities, which oversees conservation, public access, and traditional land uses across the historic open space. Horse riding remains a permitted but controlled activity on parts of the heath, reflecting long-standing recreational practices balanced against environmental protection.
Photographed in natural daylight with surrounding vegetation visible, the image documents everyday regulation of public green space in London. It illustrates themes of access control, historic land management, equestrian activity, and the quiet presence of institutional authority within a natural urban landscape. In Insomnia by Faithless, the references often discussed by fans to Hampstead Heath and the provocative line about ripping off tights with my teeth sit within Maxi Jazz's deliberately raw, nocturnal stream-of-consciousness delivery rather than a literal narrative. The Heath is widely read as shorthand for late-night London freedom, restlessness and transgressive after-hours life, a place associated with wandering, desire and sleepless introspection rather than polite daylight London. The sexualised imagery is not pornographic but symbolic, expressing tension, frustration and craving in the small hours when the city's rules loosen and impulse takes over. In that sense, the lyric reinforces the song's core theme: insomnia as a state where desire, anxiety and urban mythology blur together, with London itself acting as an emotional landscape rather than a precise setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R1WX6M - Merseyside Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing Merseyside in North West England. The service area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. As of September 2017 the service has 3,484 police officers, 1,619 police staff, 253 police community support officers, 155 designated officers and 208 special constables. The force is led by Chief Constable Serena Kennedy.
History
The service came into being in 1974 when Merseyside was created, and is a successor to the Liverpool and Bootle Constabulary (itself formed in 1967 by a merger of the Liverpool City Police with the Bootle Borough Police), along with parts of Cheshire Constabulary and Lancashire Constabulary. A proposal to merge the force with the Cheshire Constabulary to form a strategic police force was made by the Home Secretary on 6 February 2006 but later abandoned.
Merseyside maintained in 2018 it could lose 300 officers, reducing the force to 3,172. This would be a 31% reduction since 2010 when there were 4,616 officers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0PRNR - In March 2017, the Department for Transport announced that Arriva, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, and incumbent Stagecoach had been shortlisted to bid for the next East Midlands franchise. Abellio was added in February 2018.
FirstGroup and Trenitalia pulled out of the bidding process in April 2018 to focus on the West Coast Partnership franchise. In April 2019 the franchise was awarded to Abellio, with East Midlands Railway (EMR) to take over the franchise from East Midlands Trains (EMT) on 18 August 2019 for a period of eight years
EMR operates commuter services from London St Pancras to Corby, as well as intercity services from London St Pancras along the Midland Main Line to Nottingham and Sheffield with limited extensions to Lincoln. EMR also operate the local East Midlands services and inter regional services to Liverpool and Norwich (Express service). Services from Nottingham to Liverpool Lime Street were to transfer to another operator during the life of the franchise, although following a review by the DfT, this will no longer take place
the service instead being split at Nottingham as intended but remaining with EMR. The Barton line was expected to transfer from Northern in 2019 but this was delayed until May 2021
Warrington Central railway station is one of three main railway stations serving the town of Warrington in the north-west of England. It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities. Central station is served by diesel trains to Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Airport and East Anglia.

The British Rail Class 397 Civity is built by Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF for lease to TransPennine Express by Eversholt Rail Group
Announcement of new trains was made by FirstGroup when it was confirmed that they would become the next operator of the TransPennine Express franchise from 1 April 2016. In May 2016 it was announced by TransPennine Express that they had ordered twelve five-car electric multiple units from CAF to replace the fleet of ten four-car Class 350/4 Desiro units which presently operate TransPennine Express services between Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland.
Testing of the first set began at the Velim railway test circuit in July 2018.
An option for up to 22 extra units was available to TransPennine Express, but it was not exercised.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ANMBDR - CrossCountry (legal name XC Trains Limited) is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by Arriva UK Trains, operating the New Cross Country franchise. It operates intercity and other long-distance trains across the country, but does not serve Greater London. It operates the UK's longest direct rail service from Aberdeen in the north-east of Scotland to Penzance in the south-west of England. It is one of only two franchised train operating companies that does not operate any stations, the other being Caledonian Sleeper. All services call at Birmingham New Street.
The company operates medium- and long-distance services that run outside of the London area. The network is centred at Birmingham, and all services either terminate at or pass through Birmingham New Street station. Services can be categorised into two types:
Inter-City: long-distance, fast services between the South of England and the North of England or Scotland via Birmingham
these routes are typically operated by Voyagers or HST sets
Regional: medium-distance, stopping or semi-fast services between Birmingham and other cities in the Midlands, as well as some longer runs to Wales and West Anglia. These are usually operated by Turbostars.
CrossCountry's official website does show a distinction between the two types of services (for example, each has a separate timetable booklet), but does not explicitly call them Inter-City and Regional.
The Class 220 Voyager was built to operate Cross Country intercity services. Virgin CrossCountry received 34 four-car sets in 2000/01. All passed with the CrossCountry franchise to Arriva CrossCountry in November 2007

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ANMBDX - Abellio ScotRail contract to end three years early
Abellio ScotRail's contract to run train services in Scotland will end early, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson has announced.
The Dutch firm has been running the franchise since 2015 but had faced criticism over cancellations and performance levels.
The contract, worth more than ?7bn over 10 years, was due to last until 2025.
But Mr Matheson said a so-called break clause would be used to end the franchise three years early, in 2022.
He told MSPs he was looking at other options for the future, including the franchise being run by the public sector.
What is the ScotRail franchise?
ScotRail operates about 2,400 train services a day, and covers all services in Scotland except those run by other operators which cross the border.
It is not responsible for the maintenance of the track, which falls under Network Rail nor the operation of the main rail routes from Glasgow and Edinburgh to London.
There had been political pressure on ministers over the service with complaints over a high number of cancellations, overcrowding and the cost of tickets.
In a statement to the Scottish Parliament, Mr Matheson said a proposed increase in government subsidy for the service would not deliver sufficient benefits to passengers or the economy.
Image caption Mr Matheson told the Scottish parliament a break clause will be used to end the franchise early
Mr Matheson said Abellio had successes and challenges over the first five years of the ScotRail franchise, but that his decision was the right one for passengers, communities, the economy and taxpayers.
He confirmed the contract would now run until 31 March, 2022.
It is of course necessary to plan for the future provision of ScotRail services and I can confirm that work is already under way to examine the options open to the Scottish ministers after the current contract comes to an end, he said.
The franchise system for Britain's railways is grinding to a halt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA6N - Dick, Kerr and Company was a locomotive and tramcar manufacturer based in Kilmarnock, Scotland and Preston, England.
W.B. Dick and Company was founded in 1854 in Glasgow by William Bruce Dick. The company were initially oil refiners and manufacturers of paint used for coating the bottom of ships. They had depots and works in Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Barrow-in-Furness, Cardiff and Hamburg by 1890. From 1883 the company joined with John Kerr and under its new name, expanded into tramway equipment and rolling stock and built around fifty locomotives up to 1919.
In 1890 it took limited company status, as railway and tramway appliance makers and as iron and steel founders and electricians. There was a public offer of shares to acquire the engineering and contracting company of the same name - reasons given were the advancing years of the senior partner and the need for investment to expand the works at Kilmarnock including a modern iron and steel foundry.
Until the late 1890s the company had largely produced steam tram engines, but soon afterwards it became one of the largest manufacturers of electric tramway cars.
The company facilities in Preston, Lancashire, were acquired in 1893 along with the railway and tramway plant activities of Hartley, Arnoux and Fanning who had been bought out by Kerr Stuart and Company.
In 1917 they acquired the United Electric Car Company of Preston.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BTN - The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway. It was so called when taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the Glasgow Underground in 1936. Despite this rebranding, many Glaswegians continued to refer to the network as the Subway. In 2003 the name Subway was officially readopted by its operator, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). A ?40,000 study examining the feasibility of an expansion into the city's south side is in progress.
The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow
that distinction belongs to a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1863, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a sub-surface tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.
The Subway runs from 06:30 to 23:40 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 18:12 on Sunday.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy G9BJN4 - York railway station is the main-line railway station serving the city of York in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on Britain's East Coast Main Line (ECML), 188.5 miles (303 km) from London. Originally it was part of the North Eastern Railway.
Despite the small size of the city, York is one of the most important railway stations on the British railway network because of its role as a key railway junction approximately halfway between London, the capital of England, and Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is few miles north of the point where the Cross Country and TransPennine Express routes via Leeds leave/join the ECML connecting Scotland and the North East with southern England, the North West and the Midlands. The junction was historically a major site for rolling stock manufacture, maintenance and repair.
The Class 185 is a diesel multiple-unit passenger train of the Desiro UK family built by Siemens in Germany for the British then train operating company First TransPennine Express. Today they are all operated by Northern and TransPennine Express.
A ?260 million order for 51 three-car trains and associated maintenance depots was placed in 2003, and deliveries took place between 2006 and 2007.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNT5 - DRS has a uniquely flexible and efficient fleet of locomotives and rolling stock.
Our fleet of Class 68, 66, 57, 37 and 20 locomotives offer unbridled flexibility allowing us to deliver freight services across the network and support both Network Rail and the Train Operating Companies to keep their services running.
2017 saw the introduction of our new Class 88 locomotive, jointly developed with Stadler in Valencia, Spain. This mixed traffic locomotive offers a wide range of performance advantages to our clients as well as delivering the highest standards of efficiency and emissions in the industry.
As part of our drive for technical innovation, DRS has developed a fleet of IDA ?Super' Lowliner twin platforms. Offering an ultra-low platform height, these deliver 3 key advantages:
Reduced CO2 and increased fuel efficiency
More containers for any given train length
Increased network access and the ability to carry higher height ISO containers across the network
All these factors make DRS the first choice for the UK's intermodal transport specialists, including John G Russell Group and Stobart Group. The British Rail Class 90 electric locomotives were built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe Works in 1987-1990, weighing 84.5 tonnes and with a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h). They operate from 25 kV AC overhead lines and produce 5,000 bhp (3,700 kW). The class is employed on heavy freight trains.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4733688312 - 'The 'Beeching Axe' is an informal name for the British Government's attempt in the 1960s to reduce the cost of running British Railways, the nationalised railway system in the UK. The name is that of the main author of The Reshaping of British Railways, Dr Richard Beeching.
Although this report also proposed new modes of freight service and the modernisation of trunk passenger routes, it is remembered for recommending wholesale closure of what it considered little-used and unprofitable railway lines, the removal of stopping passenger trains and closure of local stations on other lines which remained open. The Helston line was one such example.
Helston railway station was the terminus of the Helston Railway in Cornwall, in England (United Kingdom). It was later operated by the Great Western Railway (some called it Gods Wonderful Railway) but has since been closed.
Helston secured its place in history when it became the first place in the country with a railway-operated bus service. These GWR road motor services met trains at the station and carried passengers on towards The Lizard.
The Beeching report was a reaction to significant losses which had begun in the 1950s as the expansion in road transport began to attract passengers and goods from the railways
losses which continued to bedevil British Railways despite the introduction of the railway Modernisation Plan of 1955. Beeching proposed that only drastic action would save the railways from increasing losses in the future.
Successive governments were more keen on the cost-saving elements of the report rather than those requiring investment. More than 4,000 miles of railway and 3,000 stations closed in the decade following the report, a reduction of 25 per cent of route miles and 50 per cent of stations.
To this day Beeching's name is synonymous, in an unfavourable way with mass closure of railways and loss of many local services. This is particularly so in parts of the country which suffered most from cuts.
Many old lines are being resurected by volunteers and enthusiasts such as this one. The Helston Railway Preservation Society are working on the Trevarno branch line and hope one day to run a short service.
Their sister organisation, the Helston Diesel Group, has acquired a two car Park Royal Diesel Multiple Unit (shown here), and two Ruston &
Hornsby shunters, all now based at Trevarno. One of the shunters has been restored to use.

Mainline testing of the Class 397 was carried out from Manchester International Depot, operating between the depot and Carlisle via Crewe, the test runs being operated by Rail Operations Group.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ANMBE0 - Abellio ScotRail contract to end three years early
