Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0CW - Documentary live music photograph shows Dave Formula, keyboard player and composer best known for his work with the influential Manchester post-punk band Magazine, performing on stage at Manchester Academy 2 on 23 May 2026. Formula is pictured at the microphone, wearing a hat, dark jacket and red shirt, with stage lighting, keyboard equipment and stock-photo/gotonysmith-Performance.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>performance hardware visible around him. The image captures a close, expressive concert moment during the Dave Formula & Noko tour, where Magazine material was performed by a full band rather than as a simple nostalgia appearance. Event listings for the tour described Magazine's Dave Formula on keyboards and Noko on guitar presenting a set drawn from Magazine's classic back catalogue, with Peter Petersen of French new wave band Affection Place on vocals, Tim Petersen on bass guitar and Dave's son Max Formula on drums. The Manchester date gave the performance extra resonance because Formula was born in Manchester and Magazine were one of the city's most important late 1970s post-punk groups. The photograph can illustrate features on post-punk, Magazine, Manchester music history, ageing musicians still performing, intergenerational touring bands, keyboard players, alternative rock, new wave, cult music audiences and the continuing afterlife of classic independent music. Formula's distinctive keyboard work helped shape Magazine's tense, dramatic sound, while his later associations with Visage and other projects connect the image to wider British new wave and synth-pop history. For stock image buyers, the value lies in the named performer, clear stage context, recognisable live music setting and precise date and venue. It is suited to editorial use around Magazine's legacy, Manchester Academy concerts, post-punk revivals, older musicians on tour, family links in live performance and the enduring appeal of songs from one of Britain's most distinctive art-rock and post-punk catalogues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0CY - Live music photograph shows Dave Formula and Noko performing on the 2026 Floorboards tour at Manchester Academy 2 on 23 May 2026, with Peter Petersen of the French band Affection Place on vocals and Dave Tomlinson, better known as Dave Formula, at the keyboards and synthesisers. The wide stage view captures Noko on guitar at the left, Petersen at centre microphone, Formula seated among keyboards and music stands to the right, plus drum kit, amplifiers, monitor wedges and blue and purple stock-photo/gotonysmith-Lighting.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>lighting across the venue. The image has clear editorial value because it records a contemporary live performance built around the legacy of Magazine, one of Manchester's defining post-punk bands. Event listings for the tour described Magazine's Dave Formula and Noko presenting classic songs from the Magazine catalogue, including material associated with the band's celebrated post-punk and new wave period. Formula's keyboard textures were central to Magazine's tense, dramatic sound, while Noko's later role with the group connected the performance to the band's longer history and continuing audience. The Manchester date adds resonance because Magazine emerged from the city's late 1970s music scene after Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks, and Manchester Academy remains a major live venue for alternative, indie and heritage acts. This photograph can illustrate features on Magazine, post-punk revival, Manchester music history, live concert photography, veteran musicians still touring, keyboard-led rock, synth performance, new wave, art rock, cult music audiences and intergenerational live performance. For stock image buyers, the value lies in the named artists, precise venue and date, strong lighting, clear stage layout and recognisable concert atmosphere. It works well for editorial use around the continuing appeal of Magazine's songbook, the enduring influence of Manchester post-punk, and the way classic independent music is being reinterpreted on modern stages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG814 - Photograph of an original printed concert ticket for U2 live at Elland Road Stadium, Leeds, West Yorkshire, on Wednesday 1 July 1987, during the European leg of The Joshua Tree Tour. The ticket carries the large U2 logo, band portrait imagery of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr, the words MCP presents, plus Special Guests, Elland Road Leeds, the date, 4.00 pm show time, 2.00 pm gates opening, £14.00 ticket price including VAT, block, row and seat details, and the warning No camping is allowed. It is a strong editorial image for searches about U2 memorabilia, 1980s rock, stadium concerts, The Joshua Tree era, music history, live music ticket design, Leeds events, Elland Road concerts and collectible paper ephemera. The Leeds show is documented as taking place on 1 July 1987 at Elland Road Stadium as part of The Joshua Tree Tour, with specialist U2 concert archive sources listing support from The Fall, The Mission and The Pretenders, making the ticket a useful visual record of a major outdoor rock event in northern England. Elland Road is best known as the home of Leeds United, but this image reflects its wider use as a large music and events venue as well as a football stadium. The ticket's blue patterned security background, gold and black typography, portrait panel and visible serial numbers help place it in the era before digital tickets, mobile entry and barcode scanning, when physical concert tickets were keepsakes as well as access documents. The worn paper, creases and aged print add documentary value, suggesting a surviving souvenir from one of the defining rock tours of the late 1980s. Useful themes include U2, Bono, Joshua Tree Tour, Elland Road, Leeds, 1987, vintage ticket, concert memorabilia, live music, arena rock, Irish rock band, eighties culture, stadium gig, West Yorkshire, collectors, nostalgia, pop culture archive, music heritage and historic entertainment ephemera.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91E9K - Black and white editorial concert photograph of House of All performing live at YES in Manchester on 22 November 2025. The image shows an intense on-stage moment, with the guitarist in the foreground under bright venue lighting and the drummer visible behind, creating a strong documentary feel that suits coverage of contemporary post-punk, alternative rock and the enduring musical legacy of former members of The Fall. The monochrome treatment adds grit and atmosphere, emphasising concentration, movement, shadow and stage presence rather than colour spectacle, making the picture especially useful for music journalism, gig reviews, tour coverage, band publicity, cultural features and editorial use connected to Manchester's live music scene. House of All has drawn attention for bringing together musicians associated with The Fall while forging its own identity, and that connection makes the photograph relevant to wider searches around Mark E Smith legacy, post-punk history, cult British bands, underground music culture and veteran performers continuing to create and tour. The tight club setting and visible backline also help place the event within the intimate, working reality of UK independent venues rather than arena scale performance. Useful themes include northern music culture, small venue energy, live guitar, drums, stage lighting, black and white music photography, alternative gig scene and the continued pull of Manchester as a city of serious music heritage. Because sources conflict on the exact room within YES, the safest metadata approach is to caption the performance at YES Manchester rather than pinning it specifically to the Basement unless independently confirmed. That keeps the listing accurate while still preserving the key commercial and editorial value of the image as a live House of All performance in Manchester during late 2025

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E6T4DK - Editorial live music photograph of Rakel Mjöll Leifsdóttir, vocalist of Dream Wife, performing at Future Yard in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, on 2 November 2024 during the band's Social Lubrication Tour 2023/24. The singer is shown mid-stock-photo/gotonysmith-Performance.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>performance under vivid red and magenta stage lighting, holding a microphone close to her mouth, with bright LED bars, amplifier equipment and part of the drum kit visible behind her. Her expressive pose, colourful patterned stage outfit and direct engagement with the crowd capture the energy, attitude and theatrical presence associated with Dream Wife's live shows.
This image is suitable for editorial use covering Dream Wife, Rakel Mjöll Leifsdóttir, live music in Birkenhead, Future Yard gigs, Merseyside music culture, UK touring bands, women in rock, feminist punk, indie rock, alternative rock and contemporary guitar music. Dream Wife are widely described as an English-Icelandic, London-based band, and this performance fits their reputation for sharp, energetic, politically aware live sets. The photograph works well for concert reviews, music journalism, venue features, tour coverage, album promotion and wider articles about grassroots venues, independent music spaces and the Liverpool City Region live music scene.
The compact venue setting, saturated lighting and close stage perspective give the image a strong documentary feel, making it useful for newspapers, magazines, blogs and music press needing a clear, recognisable performance shot. It also has wider stock value for themes such as female fronted bands, vocalist on stage, microphone performance, stagecraft, modern punk pop aesthetics, intimate gigs, artist touring schedules and the continuing appeal of energetic live alternative music in smaller British venues. Future Yard's independent status also makes the picture useful for local culture and grassroots venue coverage.

The image captures the stark, atmospheric look of a post-punk concert, with the central performer near the microphone and other musicians arranged behind him in a classic live band setup. The photograph is useful for editorial uses around Peter Hook, ex-New Order and Joy Division musicians, live performance, British post-punk, alternative rock, Manchester music heritage, touring bands, concert venues and northern music culture. Culture Warrington announced that Peter Hook and The Light would bring the Substance world tour to Parr Hall on Thursday 17 October, while ticket listings for the date describe the tour as featuring the Substance albums by Joy Division and New Order. That makes the image relevant to the legacy of both bands, Factory Records history, bass-led post-punk, and the live audience for New Order and Joy Division material. Parr Hall is a long-established Warrington performance venue on Palmyra Square South, hosting concerts, comedy, theatre and community events, and this scene shows it being used as an intimate indoor music venue with the audience visible at the foot of the frame. The monochrome treatment suits the subject, echoing visual language associated with late 1970s and early 1980s Manchester music, while lighting haze, equipment silhouettes and a dark backdrop add editorial mood. The date places the concert in autumn, and the indoor scene gives no exterior weather information, but the visible stage lighting and low contrast create a late evening gig atmosphere. This stock image can support articles on live music touring, heritage acts, post-punk revival, Warrington nightlife, Cheshire arts venues, ticketed events and the continuing influence of Joy Division and New Order on British alternative music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0X33R - Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, but their musical approach has changed over the years. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound with their 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock. Deep Purple (together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath) have been referred to as the unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies. They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJB7 - Eric's Club was a music club in Liverpool, England. It opened on 1 October 1976 in the basement of The Fruit Exchange in Victoria Street, with performances by The Runaways and The Sex Pistols (their only Liverpool gig) before soon moving around the block to its long-term site on Mathew Street opposite The Cavern Club where The Beatles and other bands of the 1960s played, and became notable for hosting early performances by many punk and post-punk bands.[1]
The club was started by Roger Eagle and Ken Testi (manager of cult Liverpool band Deaf School) and joined later by Pete Fulwell (owner of a small record label Inevitable and later to become manager of Liverpool bands It's Immaterial and The Christians). The club was given the name 'Eric's' by Ken Testi as an antidote to disco clubs with names such as 'Tiffany's' and 'Samantha's'
The club played host to many local, national and international bands primarily within the music sub-cultures of the time, such as Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Joy Division, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cardiacs, The Slits, Talking Heads, The Stranglers, Ultravox, Wire, XTC, X-Ray Spex and early gigs by New Order and Mick Hucknall (pre Simply Red).
The club acted as a catalyst for local musicians (often also from the Runcorn, Southport, Skelmersdale, Wirral areas) and saw many local artists later become successful acts, including Dead or Alive, Echo & the Bunnymen, Julian Cope, The Teardrop Explodes, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Ellery Bop and Wah! Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEJC - Black and white live music photograph of Hugh Cornwell performing on guitar and vocals at The Live Rooms in Chester during the Moments of Madness UK tour on 20 November 2022. The image shows the former Stranglers frontman under strong stage lighting, framed against a brick wall with microphone stand, electric guitar, amplifier, drum kit and audience silhouettes visible in the foreground. The monochrome treatment gives the scene a documentary concert photography feel, with high contrast, grain, shadows and spotlighting emphasising the atmosphere of a small UK music venue. Cornwell was a founding member, singer, guitarist and songwriter with The Stranglers, one of the key British bands associated with punk, new wave and post punk, before developing a long solo career. The Chester date formed part of the November 2022 tour supporting the Moments of Madness album, with contemporary listings confirming The Live Rooms show on Sunday 20 November 2022. For stock photography buyers, this image offers strong editorial use around British rock music, veteran performers, independent venues, live gigs after the pandemic period, touring musicians, alternative music culture, nostalgia, punk heritage and regional nightlife. The Live Rooms, close to Chester railway station, is a compact independent venue rather than an arena, so the photograph has an intimate, close-quarters quality, showing the reality of touring life and audience connection rather than polished stadium spectacle. The visible stage equipment, dark clothing, guitar posture and concentrated facial expression all help communicate performance, craft, sound and mood. The picture could support editorial features about Hugh Cornwell, The Stranglers legacy, Moments of Madness, UK concert venues, Chester nightlife, music tourism, ageing rock artists, black and white music photography, grassroots entertainment spaces, and the continuing importance of medium and small venues in sustaining British live music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEJE - Black and white live music photograph of Hugh Cornwell and his band performing on stage at The Live Rooms in Chester, Cheshire, on 20 November 2022 during the Moments of Madness UK tour. The image shows Cornwell at the left of frame singing into a microphone and playing electric guitar, with a drummer positioned centrally behind the kit and a bassist or second guitarist standing to the right. Audience silhouettes fill the foreground, helping to convey the atmosphere of an intimate indoor gig in a busy independent venue. The brick wall backdrop, stage lights, amplifier, drum hardware and strong contrast all add to the gritty documentary feel of the picture. This image has clear editorial value for stories about Hugh Cornwell's solo career, the 2022 Moments of Madness album campaign, British punk and new wave history, the legacy of The Stranglers, veteran touring musicians, small venue concerts and the resilience of the UK live music circuit. Cornwell remains one of the defining figures of late twentieth century British alternative music, and photographs such as this work well for features on legacy artists still performing to loyal audiences in regional venues across England. The monochrome presentation reinforces a classic rock and punk aesthetic, while the full band lineup makes the image useful for music press, tour coverage, archive use, venue promotion and general editorial content about live performance. The Live Rooms is a well-known independent venue near Chester railway station, and this concert setting adds local relevance for searches around Chester nightlife, Cheshire arts venues, North West music culture and grassroots entertainment. Useful commercial and editorial concepts include live music, concert crowd, guitarist, singer, drummer, bassist, stage performance, black and white concert photography, British rock musician, post-punk icon, intimate venue and UK tour.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM3XW - Rock (often known by its place of origin, for instance Blackpool rock or Brighton rock) is a type of hard stick-shaped boiled sugar confectionery most usually flavoured with peppermint or spearmint. It is commonly sold at tourist (usually seaside) resorts in the United Kingdom (such as Brighton, Southend-on-Sea, Scarborough, Llandudno or Blackpool) and Ireland (e.g. Bray and Strandhill)
in Gibraltar
in Denmark in towns such as Løkken and Ebeltoft
and in Sydney and Tasmania, Australia.
It usually takes the form of a cylindrical stick (a stick of rock), normally 12.5 cm (0.390.98 in) in diameter and 2025 cm (7.99.8 in) long. Blackpool rock is usually at least 2.5 cm (0.98 in) in diameter, and can be as thick as 17 cm (6.7 in) across and up to 2 m (6.6 ft) long when made for special retail displays. These cylinders usually have a pattern embedded throughout the length, which is often the name of the resort where the rock is sold, so that the name can be read on both ends of the stick (reversed at one end) and remains legible even after pieces are bitten off. Rock is also manufactured as a promotional item, for example with a company name running through it.
It is sometimes found in the form of individual sweets, with writing or a pattern in the centre
these are, in effect, slices of rock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJPKRF - Nocturnal penile tumescence is a spontaneous erection of the penis during sleep or when waking up. Along with nocturnal clitoral tumescence, it is also known as sleep-related erection, morning glory or morning wood. Men without physiological erectile dysfunction or severe depression experience nocturnal penile tumescence, usually three to five times during a period of sleep, typically during rapid eye movement sleep. Nocturnal penile tumescence is believed to contribute to penile health
The cause of nocturnal penile tumescence is not known with certainty. In a wakeful state, in the presence of mechanical stimulation with or without an arousal, erection is initiated by the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system with minimal input from the central nervous system. Parasympathetic branches extend from the sacral plexus of the spinal nerves into the arteries supplying the erectile tissue
upon stimulation, these nerve branches release acetylcholine, which in turn causes release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells in the trabecular arteries, that eventually causes tumescence. Bancroft (2005) hypothesizes that the noradrenergic neurons of the locus ceruleus in the brain are perpetually inhibitory to penile erection, and that the cessation of their discharge that occurs during rapid eye movement sleep may allow testosterone-related excitatory actions to manifest as nocturnal penile tumescence. Suh et al. (2003) recognizes that in particular the spinal regulation of the cervical cord is critical for nocturnal erectile activity.
The nerves that control one's ability to have a reflex erection are located in the sacral nerves (S2-S4) of the spinal cord. Evidence supporting the possibility that a full bladder can stimulate an erection has existed for some time and is characterized as a 'reflex erection'. A full bladder is known to mildly stimulate nerves in the same region. The possibility of a full bladder causing an erection, especially during sleep

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9A35 - Viola Beach were an English indie rock group, formed in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2013. The band's final line-up consisted of Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), River Reeves (guitar), Tomas Lowe (bass guitar), and Jack Dakin (drums). All four, along with their manager Craig Tarry, died when their car fell from a bridge in Södertälje, Sweden on 13 February 2016.
In the week following the crash, their single Boys That Sing entered the UK Singles Chart at number 80 and their previous single Swings & Waterslides entered at number 11, following a public campaign to boost sales.[6] In the same week, Swings & Waterslides also entered at number three on the sales-only chart (which excludes streaming data) and Boys That Sing entered at number 27 on the same chart. On 29 July 2016, the self-titled album was released. It reached number one on the album chart on 5 August 2016

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF07F - Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by the group's new record label, Swan Song Records.
The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album in early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, which gave them ample time to improvise arrangements and experiment with recording. The total playing time covered three sides of an LP, so they decided to expand it into a double by including previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for the earlier albums Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy. The album covered a range of styles including hard rock, progressive rock, rock 'n' roll and folk. The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of year release. It was delayed because of the sleeve, which was designed by Peter Corriston and featured a theme around a tenement block in Manhattan, New York.
Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful upon its release and debuted at number one on album charts in both the US and the UK. It was promoted by a successful US tour and a five-night residency at Earl's Court, London, and has since been viewed as one of the group's strongest albums and the artistic peak of their career. The album has been reissued on CD several times, including an expansive 40th anniversary edition in 2015. Physical Graffiti was later certified 16× platinum in the United States

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PK2 - Edinburgh Castle is an historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D0 - Symphony Hall is a 2,262 seat concert venue in Birmingham, England. It was officially opened by the Queen on 12 June 1991, although it had been in use since 15 April 1991. It is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and hosts around 270 events a year. It was completed at a cost of £30 million. The hall's interior is modelled on the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The venue, managed alongside Town Hall, presents a programme of jazz, world, folk, rock, pop and classical concerts, organ recitals, spoken word, dance, comedy, educational and community performances, and is also used for conferences and business events as part of the International Convention Centre.
In 2016 the Concert Hall Acoustics expert Leo Beranek ranked Symphony Hall as having the finest acoustics in the United Kingdom, and the seventh best in the world. Proof of these fine acoustics is that a pre-opening acoustic test demonstrated that if a pin was dropped on stage, the sound could be heard from anywhere in the hall
Symphony Hall was designed by Percy Thomas Partnership and Renton Howard Wood Levin, (who together formed the Convention Centre Partnership for the ICC) with specialist help from Russell Johnson, founder of acoustic consultants Artec. A particularly innovative feature is the hall's acoustic flexibility. It has a reverberation chamber behind the stage and extending high along the sides, adding 50% to the hall's volume, the doors to which can be remotely opened or closed. The U-shaped reverberation chamber area has a volume of 12,700 cubic metres (450,000 cu ft). There is an acoustic canopy which can be raised or lowered above the stage. Dampening panels can be extended or retracted to ensure that the sound of the space is perfectly matched to the scale and style of the music to be performed. There are also reverse fan walls at the rear of the hall which provide further reflections of sound

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6P19 - Imagine is a song by British rock musician John Lennon from his 1971 album of the same name. The best-selling single of his solo career, the lyrics encourage listeners to imagine a world of peace, without materialism, without borders separating nations and without religion. Shortly before his death, Lennon said that much of the song's lyrics and content came from his wife, Yoko Ono, and in 2017 the process to give Yoko co-writing credit (while not yet confirmed), was already under way.
Lennon and Ono co-produced the song with Phil Spector. Recording began at Lennon's home studio at Tittenhurst Park, England, in May 1971, with final overdubs taking place at the Record Plant, in New York City, during July. In October, Lennon released Imagine as a single in the United States, where it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was first issued as a single in Britain in 1975, to promote the compilation Shaved Fish, and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart that year. It later topped the chart following Lennon's murder in 1980.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNGD - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist. Having played with Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1974, he then played with Babe Ruth, from 197576, before becoming an original member of Paice Ashton Lord in 1977 and then joining the hard rock band, Whitesnake, after having the possibility of playing with his boy-time hero Paul McCartney and Wings because while waiting, David Coverdale asked him to form Whitesnake.
In more recent years, Marsden has toured with his bands Company of Snakes, M3 (both formed with fellow former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray), and performed with Elkie Brooks. Over the years he has taken part in a number of sessions and has released a handful of solo albums (And About Time, Too!, Look at Me Now, Green & Blues, Stacks). He has also collaborated with Micky Moody on a number of Marsden-Moody live and studio projects.
On the Sweden Rock Festival on 10 June 2011 Bernie Marsden played with Whitesnake for the first time since 1981, thus becoming the second of only two former Whitesnake band members who have played with Whitesnake in recent years, the other person being Adrian Vandenberg, who also played with them on the Sweden Rock Festival. In the last ten years, Marsden has been involved in very different projects. The most unusual being two engagements at the National Theatre in London for Nickolas Hytner's productions of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and Henry the V in collaboration with Simon Webb. Also, he appeared in ZDF television in Germany for their production of Frankie, a six-part TV special.
After this, Marsden has worked alongside Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Ian Paice and Jon Lord for a charity concert in London. Bernie also played Guitar with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey in Monte Carlo. Most recently, he has been playing and writing for guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa.

Is This Desire? is a 1998 (see 1998 in music) album by British singer-songwriter PJ Harvey.
Recorded on and off in Dorset and London between April 1997 and April 1998, it was co-produced by Flood, Head and Harvey herself, and featured instrumental contributions from Rob Ellis, John Parish, Mick Harvey, Eric Drew Feldman, Joe Gore and Jeremy Hogg. It marked a move away from Harvey’s earlier guitar-driven rock style into subtler, quieter, atmospheric soundscapes and mood pieces based around keyboards, bass and electronics.
The album met with a mixed reception from critics and fans upon release, some of whom were disappointed by Harvey’s experimental and less bombastic new style. Reviews were generally positive, however. Q magazine praised the record as 'disturbing and excellent', CMJ called it 'another milestone in her already illustrious career', and Entertainment Weekly said it 'seethes with hypnotic power'
the magazine Dazed &
Confused claimed 'Is This Desire? will be a classic of the next 10 if not 20 years.
It has the impeccable timing of jazz, the arrangement of a classic dance track, the depth of an orchestral symphony and the emotional charge of gospel.' It received a Grammy Award nomination as Best Alternative Music Performance of 1998. Although it did not sell as well as her 1995 commercial breakthrough To Bring You My Love, it did spawn her biggest UK hit with the single 'A Perfect Day Elise'
a second single, 'The Wind', also dented the UK Top 30.
Blackpool Illuminations is an annual Lights Festival, founded in 1879 and first switched on 18 September that year, held each autumn in the English seaside resort of Blackpool on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire.
Also known locally as The Lights or The Illuminations, they run each year for sixty-six days, from late August until early November at a time when most other English seaside resorts' seasons are coming to an end. Dubbed as 'the greatest free light show on earth', they are 6 miles (10 km) long and use over one million bulbs. The display stretches along the Promenade from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.
In 2011 the Illuminations will shine from 2 September to 6 November 2011

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7F - Philomena Lynott (22 October 1930 12 June 2019) was an Irish author and entrepreneur. She was the mother of Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott. Her autobiography, My Boy, documents their relationship. She was the proprietor of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Manchester, which provided accommodation for a number of bands in the 1970s including Thin Lizzy.
Biography
Philomena Lynott was born on 22 October 1930 as the fourth of nine children to Frank and Sarah Lynott in Dublin, and grew up in the Crumlin district of the city. She left school aged 13 and worked in an elderly people's home.
In 1947 Lynott took advantage of a viable job market in England, that needed labour to rebuild damage caused by World War II, finding work as a nurse in Manchester. She began a relationship with Cecil Parris, which led to Philip's birth on 20 August 1949. She suffered prejudice because she did not marry Cecil Paris and was the mother of a mixed-race son, who she decided would best be raised by her parents in Dublin. Lynott had two other children that she put up for adoption. She remained close to her son throughout his life but because she only saw him sporadically felt they were more like sister and brother or friends instead of a typical mother and son relationship.
In 1964 Lynott began a relationship with Dennis Keeley and the couple took over management of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Whalley Range, Manchester. Though they had no experience in running a hotel, they bought the property after six months and remained there for the next 14 years. The hotel became well known in northwest England for being frequented by the show business trade. Lynott took advantage of hotel licensing laws, which meant the bar could be open at 2 am when all other local venues had shut. When Thin Lizzy became commercially successful in the 1970s, the band looked forward to gigging in Manchester as Philomena would accommodate them and put on an after-show party.

A Question Of Etiquette hope to keep raising the bar and destroy the UK... Their lyrical concept is born through the hatred that many of us have grown up with through our lives, the people we know, hate and love and the pure passion that drives us to aim as far we can... The band aim for a fresh melodic sound, yet maintaining an extreme yet old school feel to the music, forever hoping to progress through time, and with the dedication and drive we all have we believe this is possible'

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5151969435 - 'Solitary are a Lancashire based rock/metal band. They are Richard Sherrington (original member) on vox &
guitars, Roy Miller on drums, Andy Mellor on lead guitar and Mike Park on Bass. They are caught here at the Winnington Halloween gig in some more than usual fancy dress.
Solitary formed in Preston 1994 and signed to UK label Holier Than Thou Records in 1997, they made their first appearance on the HTT compilation “Genetically Fresh” which attracted interest from the JMG Agency who lined up support slots with Kill 2 This, Reign and Deranged from Sweden. May the following year Solitary record “Nothing Changes” Solitary then embarked on two UK tours to promote the album, which was released in November 1998.
In 2008 a new album “Requiem”, over a four-year period fraught with personal highs and lows the band created a 'Thrash Metal Monster', which was hailed as a must for the fans of Testament, God Forbid, Slayer or The Haunted. Influenced by the aforementioned bands and the 80’s Bay Area bands.
“Requiem” contains a guest vocal appearance from Chris Astley of 80’s Thrashers Xentrix on the track “Hatred” the CD also has cover of Testament’s “Into the Pit”. When writing the album Solitary used inspirational albums such as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “ The Gathering”, “ A New Darkness Upon Us” and “Gone Forever” as reference points to help them create the same feeling as those albums generated when they first heard them whether or not they’ve done that remains to be seen.
The artwork created by bassist Michael Park uses the original cover of a book published in 1736. The band are also shooting a video for “Keep Your Enemies Closer” in early September as well as having tracks on the CD cover mounts on Metal Hammer and Terrorizer in the UK.

Once they kick off however, the B-Movie voiceover clips and canned processed beats start and you realise 20 seconds in that you are in for a rare treat. Looking unassuming they lull you into a false sense of security as they echo Pendulum, The Quemist and others in a roller coaster of music. They have been at this since 2007 and obviously learned a lot.

Rize Of Flyz

Beyatch

(with) Aaarrggh (as encore)
They are Clide Yohanas Ventura on Vox and guitar and Bubba O Montoya Vox and keyboards. With names like that maybe they dont actually live in Crewe :-) . The again we might know Clide as Lea Ward back in the real world.
They describe themselves as “Massive Attack meets Ed Wood” and 'what the Beatles would sound like if they lived in Manchester had keyboards and new (sic) the Mighty Boosh'
Word is slowly getting out about this pair, the Crewe Chronicle did a piece on them in march 2010. In it they mention they are front runners to support to the world’s first live dubstep band Jazzsteppa on tour later this year. ( www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/entertainment-chester/news-rev... ).
Anyway, keep an eye out for these lads, they blew me away and I am very difficult to please. The more you see the less surprises me, but Kalahan really did. If you see them coming to your neck of the woods, go and see what the fuss is all about.

Here on a bill with Crewes AQUO and Blue Gillespie (of south Wales). A lot of the new stuff was played and it will be a long five weeks until the release of 'Dreams Of Death &
The Death Of Dreams' which must be well worth getting hold of. You used to be able to buy their first EP, 'A Demon For Every Occasion' at gigs, I remember scrounging a copy several years back. The new album was cut in 2009 at Parlour Studios Northampton with acclaimed metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile blah da blah...) at the mixing desk.
In describing the cut they namecheck Hole, Atari Teenage Riotand my old punk faves Killing Joke. These are cute cookies. Follow this link and maybe buy a tee or some other cool merch www.obsessivecompulsiveband.com/shop/
The band are currently on tour taking in Bristol, Newport, Manchester, Bradford, Worcester and Birmingham. Go out of your way to see them, you wont be dissapointed!
There was a crowd of about 130 there and it was a cracking night.

So often drummers are not given the recognition they deserve. Tucked away at the back of the stage. I try to take at least a few shots of drummers in each band I take, not always possible with good results!
Still where would we be without John Densmore of the Doors, the mighty Bonzo John Bonham of Led Zeppilin, Topper Headon of the Clash, Stephen Morris of Joy Division (once told to totaly dismantel his kit by a drug crazed Martin Hannett whil erecording Unknown Pleasures), The Stones Charlie Watts, Roger Taylor of Queen, Keith Moon and Neil Peart of Rush (not often you will catch me heaping praise on Rush, but where its due....). I will now dig out Cornershops excellent CD to play 'slip the drummer one'...

Some nice extreme piercings and tats.
An old shot, sadly the noise abatement society have led to the demise of CBGB's at 315 Bowery. I dont know who should be more ashamed. The club originally opened by Billy Kristal closed in October 2006. The final concert was performed quite appropriately by Patti Smith on 15/10/2006.
A lot of my favourite bands cut their teeth there and I remember having early cassette tape bootlegs from CBGB's. My faves were the Ramones, Tom Verlaine &
Television, Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys (I came across Sonic Reducer on 12' last week- which prompted me to dig this out), Richard Hell &
The Voidoids, The Cramps, Blondie and those darlings Talking Heads.

Manchester was the biggest place outside London on the Punk music scene. The Buzzcocks (I still have my Spiral Scratch EP somewhere in the loft) , Magazine, Joy Division, The Frantic Elevators, Slaughter &
The Dogs, Ed Banger &
The Nosebleeds(whose lineup included Vini Reilly of DC), The Fall and The Drones all characters on the scene, The biggest was not even a musician, the late Tony Wilson. (RIP 10th August 2007, aged 57, Withington, Manchester, England). As with everything else in the Manchester Factory empire, Tony Wilson's coffin was also given a Factory catalogue number - FAC 501.
I have memories of my old mum, coming home from catholic church on Sunday talking about that scruffy 'Tony Wilson' turning with 'dodgy shoes'. This was when he lived in Charlesworth with Lindsay Reade. In his youth he lived in affluent Marple, Stockport Cheshire.
I was lucky enought to photograph Chad &
Shez at their punk wedding. One of my most enjoyable days out ever. Brilliant people and family.

A brilliant gig and the image here captures how they played (kick ass) on the night. Standout track was the cover of backstreets Back.
The setlist was:

My Alibi (*)

Backstreets Back
Kashmir (nice cover of the Led Zep classic)
Anybody Out There
Pull The Plug (*)
Sound of Your Nightmare.
The crowd were baying for more and a couple more tracks could have been slipped in before Adie pulled the plug. If you see them playing or supporting near you, give them a look!

I was too young to see them in Manchester supporting T.Rex before Marc Bolans untimely death.

The nearby crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-Àth Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mhòr (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMXA6 - Mow Cop is an isolated village which straddles the CheshireStaffordshire border, and is thus divided between the North West and West Midlands regions of England. It is 24 miles south of Manchester and 6 miles north of Stoke-on-Trent.
The name is first recorded as Mowel around 1270 AD, and is believed to be derived from either the Anglo-Saxon Mūga-hyll, meaning heap-hill, with copp = head added later, or the Common Celtic ancestor of Welsh moel (= hill), with Anglo-Saxon copp added later.
At the village's summit, men once quarried stone to make into querns, used since the Iron Age for milling corn
this trade ended during the Victorian period. The village also has a long history of coal mining. Mow Cop Castle is a folly of a ruined castle at the summit of the hill, built in 1754. The village was served by a railway station which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on October 9, 1848. Mow Cop is known for its 'Killer Mile', a one mile road race from the level crossing on the western side of the hill, up to the Castle. The race was originated in the early 1980s by John Britton, and sponsored by ICL (Kidsgrove). It continues today, organised by the Mow Cop Residents' Association. Mow Cop Runners, a local running club founded in 2009, meet at The Ash Inn and organise The Mow Cop Hill Race, a 6.5 mile fell race.
Mow Cop is also noteworthy as the birthplace of the Primitive Methodist movement. Starting in 1800, Hugh Bourne from Stoke-on-Trent and William Clowes from Burslem began holding open-air prayer meetings. On 31 May 1807, a large 14-hour camp meeting was held and as a result the Primitive Methodist Church was formed in 1810. These camp meetings became a regular feature at Mow Cop, with camps later held to celebrate the 100th, 150th and 200th anniversaries of the first camp.
The village features prominently in the 1973 novel Red Shift by Alan Garner.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3356735418 - 'Manchester musician Howard Devoto, ex Buzzcocks, ex Magazine and ex Luxuria (et Noko ). Here shown at the UK reunion tour 2009.
Howard Devoto was born Howard Trafford 15/03/1952 in Scunthorpe. He began his career as the front man for the Manchester punk band Buzzcocks. He left early on to form Magazine, one of the first post-punk bands and who influenced the whole post 1977 scene. After Magazine, he went solo. After Magazine split in 1981 Devoto spent two years putting together a solo album with former Magazine keyboard player Dave Formula (the guy who precipitated the 2009 reunion). Though reception of Jerky Versions of the Dream was mixed, the single 'Rainy Season' was consistently picked as a stand-out track. Later, formed indie band Luxuria with Noko.
For most of the 1990s, Devoto was little involved in music, earning his living by working for a photo agency.
In 2001, Devoto teamed up for the first time in twenty-five years with Buzzcocks Pete Shelley and released the much-anticipated Buzzkunst under the name ShelleyDevoto.
In 2002, Devoto had a small part in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a film about Manchester's Factory Records. In his brief cameo appearance, Devoto appears as a janitor cleaning a men's toilet while actor Martin Hancock (who bears no major resemblance to Devoto) portrays Devoto having a tryst with the wife of promoter/journalist Tony Wilson. The real-life Devoto breaks the fourth wall by addressing the camera and stating in dead pan, 'I definitely don't remember this happening'.
In February 2009 Magazine reformed as shown, with former Luxuria guitarist Noko replacing the deceased John McGeoch on guitar.
On July 9, 2009, Devoto was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton for his contribution to music.

Nitin Sawhney is a British indian musician, producer and composer. His critically-acclaimed work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of jazz and electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics and spirituality. This is evident in the London Undersound recordings. This explores the experience of the Al-Qaeda's claimed London bombings of 7th July 2005.
Particularly the track 'Days of Fire' evokes that fear and terror of the tube attack 'First came the flash of lights, then explosion'

Looker are an exciting New York based band. they are Boshra AlSaadi on guitar/vocals, Nicole Greco on guitar and vocals, AJ Lambert on bass guitar / vocals, and Robbie Overbey on drums and vocals.
Steve Lamacq describes them as 'Sassy American rock &
roll with low slung guitars and economically short power-pop riffs.'
I think I would agree with that.

Roy on top form.
Burnley's Deponeye formed in 1998 following the renaming of the band from Kain.
Following a series of great supports including Dodgy, Kirk Brandons Spear of Destiny and MoSolid Gold, the bands original members left to pursue oher things leaving Roy &
Micky to bring in drummer Pete Jeffery &
Bassist Alex Harker.
Frequent visitors to teh Banned! gigs in Northwich Deponeye quickly set about making a name for themselves in the industry and finally in 2004 secured two tracks (Anger Management &
Tick Tock) onto one of 2004s biggest selling computer games entitled Flatout sold on the PS2, PC &
XBOX platforms.
The game sent deponeyes profile into the stratosphere and consequently that Xmas contact was made from Revolver Records concerning signing the guys. Unfortunately, before any deal could be made, the band split up in mid 2005.
Roy found himself drawn back into the band lifestyle late 2006 with a new line up and subsequently decided that the name deponeye was to be left behind. Following a series of line up changes, his new band Exit State have continued in the same succesful vein as deponeye.
Have a look at www.myspace.com/exitstate to find out what they are now up to.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3711866769 - 'A bit about her from her Bio: In 2001, a friend introduced her to drummer Dave Heyes, who had recently finished a stint of gigs with Elvis Costello. After attending one of Maria’s gigs, Heyes quickly became a fixture in her band. In 2005, Maria came across producer John Kettle (Tansads/High Holy Days/The Marble Index). Together, they recorded a three-song demo. “Once I was in the studio and heard the magic of my music coming to life, I knew that this was where things were going to change forever,” Maria says. Within a few months, Maria had five major record labels and publishers interested. She set up a showcase in London and traveled there with the band.
“The sound was bigger and better than ever before. From there I got a fantastic reaction from the labels who wanted to hear more.” In the summer of 2006 Maria and Dave established the indie label JTC Records, and they released the single “Love Of My Life” which went on to receive national airplay. Soon after this Maria returned to the studio to record her debut album “Landslide”.

Most often you might hear it in (what my old dad might have called) a WM (Working Mens) Social Club. It might be after some bingo (a la Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights).
At this social club bar on the edge of St Helens the Wigan Wildkats were too loud and the MC (Compaire) had them turn the amplifiers down a couple of times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNFR - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist.

In honor of his life's work and the impact he had on the country, the monument at Meeting House Square in Dublin's Temple Bar features a life-sized bronze replica of his Stratocaster placed ridiculously high on a brick wall. The bronze 1961 Fender Stratocaster is above the Rory Gallagher Corner entrance to the Meeting House Square on Essex Street East.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF79K - Buzzcocks is an English punk rock band formed in Bolton, England in 1976 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto. They are regarded as a seminal influence on the Manchester music scene, the independent record label movement, punk rock, power pop, and pop punk. They achieved commercial success with singles that fused pop craftsmanship with rapid-fire punk energy. These singles were collected on Singles Going Steady, an acclaimed compilation album described by music journalist and critic, Ned Raggett, as a punk masterpiece.
Devoto left the band in 1977, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. After releasing three albums, as well as Singles Going Steady, the band broke up in 1981 following a dispute with their then-record label, but reunited in 1989 and released six more albums before Shelley's death in 2018, but the band has remained active. Steve Diggle, the guitarist and co-founder of the band, is now singer. They added a new guitarist Mani Perazzoli. They are still touring and released their tenth album in 2022

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJ1P - Eric's Club was a music club in Liverpool, England.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX3K - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX3C - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock.
