Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M7C - black and white photograph of a damaged Range Rover SUV with severe front-end crash damage, missing bumper sections, exposed internal bodywork and broken trim, parked or abandoned on a rough roadside beside dense woodland. The image shows the distinctive Range Rover bonnet lettering and the front of the vehicle partly stripped after an impact or collision, with loose debris and damaged parts visible around the front wheels. It is suitable for editorial use on road traffic accidents, dangerous driving, SUV crashes, vehicle damage, insurance claims, accident recovery, repair costs, car crime, abandoned vehicles, roadside hazards and the public safety consequences of high-powered luxury vehicles on narrow or rural roads. The monochrome treatment gives the scene a stark documentary feel, emphasising the violence of the impact, the cost of collision damage and the aftermath rather than the glamour normally associated with premium 4x4 motoring. The image may also illustrate wider stories about expensive SUV ownership, Range Rover insurance costs, theft and stripping risks, antisocial driving, reckless driving, speeding, black box insurance, road safety campaigns, police collision investigations, damaged prestige cars, off-road style vehicles used on urban and country lanes, and the environmental footprint of large luxury SUVs. The surrounding leaves, shaded trees and rough ground suggest an outdoor lane or edge-of-woodland location, with natural debris on the bonnet and road surface. Without a visible registration plate, identifiable people or clear accident location, the wording should avoid claiming a specific incident, cause, driver behaviour, police involvement or injury. Strong keywords include crashed Range Rover, damaged SUV, wrecked 4x4, accident aftermath, motor insurance, collision damage, car repair, road safety, luxury car damage, abandoned vehicle, vehicle recovery, dangerous driving concept and editorial motoring image.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FW - A large street banner carrying the message Trans Is Not A Choice / Transphobia Is displayed in Manchester's Gay Village along Canal Street, photographed at Canal Street, Manchester M1 3WD. The banner is positioned within a public pedestrian area close to historic brick civic buildings, situating the message firmly within the everyday urban environment of Manchester city centre.
Canal Street is internationally recognised as the heart of Manchester's Gay Village and has long been associated with LGBTQ+ visibility, nightlife, activism and community life. Public banners and temporary installations such as this are frequently used in the area to express messages of inclusion, equality and opposition to discrimination.
The wording of the banner reflects contemporary debates around transgender rights and social acceptance in the UK, emphasising that gender identity is inherent while prejudice is a matter of choice. Photographed in daylight, the image documents a moment of public expression within a well-known LGBTQ+ space, providing strong editorial value for themes of human rights, equality, activism and modern urban culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8B6 - An open trench showing replacement gas pipes during utility renewal works in Thelwall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The image shows newly installed yellow gas pipes laid within an excavated trench, surrounded by orange safety barriers used to protect pedestrians and vehicles during roadworks.
The works form part of a gas main renewal programme historically associated with Transco, the former gas transportation business of National Grid, now operating under Cadent Gas following industry restructuring. Such programmes are designed to replace ageing iron gas mains with modern polyethylene piping to improve safety, reliability, and long-term resilience of the gas distribution network.
Thelwall is a residential village area south of Warrington, where infrastructure upgrades are typically carried out on local roads serving housing estates and village centres. Utility works of this type are a common feature of UK streets, often requiring temporary traffic management and causing short-term disruption in exchange for long-term improvements to essential services.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating gas infrastructure renewal, utility maintenance, civil engineering works, public safety measures, local roadworks, and the ongoing investment required to maintain underground energy networks in towns and villages across England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8DM - A close-up photograph of a red British Rail double-arrow sign displaying the name Grangetown at Grangetown railway station in Cardiff, Wales. The sign is mounted against a stone wall beneath elevated rail infrastructure, reflecting the practical, utilitarian design associated with Britain's urban railway stations.
Grangetown railway station serves the Grangetown district to the south-west of Cardiff city centre and originally opened in 1884 during a period of rapid railway expansion driven by industrial growth and the development of Cardiff as a major port city. The station historically supported workers travelling to and from the docks and nearby industrial areas, playing a role in the economic life of the city during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Today, Grangetown station forms part of the South Wales rail network, with passenger services operated by Transport for Wales. The station provides frequent local services to Cardiff Central, as well as onward connections along the Vale of Glamorgan line, including destinations such as Penarth, Barry, and Bridgend, depending on service patterns. These routes support daily commuting, education, leisure travel, and access to Cardiff's central business, retail, and transport hubs.
The continued presence of the British Rail double-arrow symbol highlights the enduring legacy of national railway branding introduced in the 1960s, which remains a widely recognised icon across the UK rail system despite changes in operators and governance. The station itself reflects the layered history of Welsh rail transport, combining Victorian-era origins with modern commuter use in a growing capital city.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating railway history in Wales, urban commuter transport, public transport infrastructure in Cardiff, British rail branding, and the role of local stations in supporting sustainable travel and city connectivity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T00PD4 - High Speed 2 (HS2) is a planned high-speed railway line and network of passenger train services in England. It will consist of a new railway line between the West Midlands and London, with a branch to Birmingham, and a network of train services that will use the new line and existing conventional track to reach their destinations in the Midlands, Northern England, and Scotland. HS2 will be Britain's second purpose-built high-speed line, the first being High Speed 1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel. The majority of the project is planned to be completed between 2029 and 2033. A 2019 review of the project, as then planned, estimated that it would cost up to £87 billion
however, this is estimated to have risen to approximately £100 billion in 2023.
The new line will run between London Euston railway station and Fradley in southern Staffordshire, with stations at Old Oak Common, in northwest London, and Birmingham Interchange, near Solihull. There will be spurs to a planned station in central Birmingham and a junction with the West Coast Main Line (WCML) at Handsacre, near Lichfield. The rolling stock will run at a maximum speed of 360 km/h (225 mph) and will operate on both HS2 track and existing conventional track
On 4 October 2023 the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that Phase 2 would be abandoned and that responsibility for the Euston connection would be removed from HS2 Ltd

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T00PD5 - New Canal Street
In preparation for the construction of HS2 Curzon Street station, there will be a partial closure on New Canal Street, Birmingham city centre.
New Canal Street, between Curzon Street and Fazeley Street, will be closed to all traffic, cyclists and pedestrians from 13 August 2023.
There are recommended walking and cycling diversions routes.
If you are travelling from Millenium Point, BCU and Eastside City Park the most direct diversion route follows the footpath around Masshouse Lane or the Clayton Hotel. Then it continues along Moor Street Queensway, around to the left to Moor Street and Park Street back on to New Canal Street.
There is also a diversion route along Curzon Street, around Curzon Circle roundabout and onto Lawley Middleway to Montague Street. You then follow Montague Street to the junction of Fazeley Street.
Travel tips
You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:
Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel around New Canal Street you may need to allow more time for your journey.
Think about your options. The partial closure of New Canal Street will mean that you may need to plan an alternative route. Please familiarise yourself with recommended walking and cycling diversion routes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX180N - A terrace or terraced house (UK) or townhouse (US) is an architectural term for a form of medium-density housing that first started in 16th century Europe with a row of joined houses sharing side walls. In the United States and Canada these are known as row houses or row homes, commonly found in older cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Toronto.
Terrace housing can be found worldwide, though it is quite common in Europe and Latin America, and many examples can be found in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.
Since the Second World War, housing redevelopment has led to many outdated or dilapidated terraces being cleared to make room for tower blocks, which occupy a much smaller area of land. Because of this land use in the inner city areas could in theory have been used to create greater accessibility, employment or recreational or leisure centres. However, sub-optimal or flawed implementation has meant that in many areas (like Manchester or the London estates) the tower blocks offered no real improvement for rehoused residents over their prior terraced houses.
In 2005 the English Heritage report Low Demand Housing and the Historic Environment found that repairing a standard Victorian terraced house over 30 years is around 60% cheaper than building and maintaining a newly built house. In a 2003 survey for Heritage Counts a team of experts contrasted a Victorian terrace with a house built after 1980, and found that:
The research demonstrated that, contrary to earlier thinking, older housing actually costs less to maintain and occupy over the long-term life of the dwelling than more modern housing. Largely due to the quality and life-span of the materials used, the Victorian terraced house proved almost £1,000 per 100 m2 cheaper to maintain and inhabit on average each year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRP - Dove Holes is a village in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. It has a population of about 1,200 (2001), shown in the 2011 Census as being included in the population of Chapel-en-le-Frith. It straddles the A6 road approximately three miles north of Buxton and three miles south of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Trains run from Dove Holes railway station into Manchester.
Residents of the village live either in the village or on outlying farms. There are around six farms in the village and many more within the boundaries of the parish. There are also large limestone quarries that, over the years, have made an important contribution to the development and economy of the village. Additionally, there are several businesses. There are two public houses, one of which offers accommodation. There is a daily milk delivery service and a mobile library every fortnight. There is a church, Methodist chapel and a community centre. The village lies on the fringe of the Peak District National Park.
In 1650, a General Survey of the Manor of High Peak was made to assess the property of the late King Charles. This recorded that people were burning limestone around the village and that there were 14 kilns thereabouts, the burnt lime (quicklime) being slaked and used by farmers to condition the soil in their fields. At that time, lime kilns could be built and demolished without authority.
With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, and the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway in 1796, the limestone quarries were commercialised. The first of these was at nearby Loads Knowl and others quickly followed along Dove Holes Dale. Undoubtedly, the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway and the consequent expansion of commercial limestone quarries contributed greatly to the expansion of the village. For the first time, there was an outlet for limestone in Manchester via the Peak Forest Tramway, Bugsworth Basin, the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFG8 - Liverpool Corporation Waterworks and its successors have provided a public water supply and sewerage and sewage treatment services to the city of Liverpool, England. In 1625 water was obtained from a single well and delivered by cart, but as the town grew, companies supplied water to homes through pipes. There were two main companies by the 1840s, but the water supply was intermittent, and there was general dissatisfaction with the service. Liverpool Corporation decided that such an important service should be provided by a public body, and sought to take over the water supply companies.
A series of Acts of Parliament were obtained, the first being the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846, which created three key posts, the Medical Officer of Health, the Inspector of Nuisances, and the Borough Engineer. The latter post was filled by James Newlands, a visionary man who defined the role of the Borough Engineer, to be copied by many other towns and cities. He set about creating large scale maps of Liverpool, building a water-based sewerage system, making provision for bath houses, wash houses, swimming lessons, minimum sizes for rooms, paving and street lighting. The sewage was emptied into the River Mersey for the tides to take away, but he saw this as an interim measure, with a sewage treatment works being required. This part of his vision was not implemented until the 1980s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0C1 - In the 19th Century due to suburbanization omnibuses became in to use and in 1869 were recorded running hourly on the Malone Road, Lisburn Road, Antrim Road, County Down Road to Sydenham hourly. Belfast is a now a relatively car-dependent city, by European standards, with an extensive road network including the ten lane M2 motorway. A recent survey of how people travel in Northern Ireland showed that people in Belfast made 77% of all journeys by car, 11% by public transport and 6% on foot. It also showed that Belfast has 0.70 cars per household compared to figures of 1.18 in the East and 1.14 in the West of Northern Ireland.
Most public transport in Northern Ireland is operated by the subsidiaries of Translink. Bus services in the city proper and the nearer suburbs are operated by Translink Metro, with services focusing on linking residential districts with the City Centre on twelve quality bus corridors running along main radial roads, resulting in poor connections between different suburban areas. More distant suburbs are served by Ulsterbus. A small number of private operators are also present, including Aircoach who operate a non-stop route from Belfast to Dublin City, via Dublin Airport which competes with services offered by Translink.
Black taxis are common in the city, operating on a share basis in some areas. Separate associations serving nationalist and unionist areas operate throughout Belfast. During the Troubles, nationalist taxi drivers in West Belfast and Ardoyne became targets for loyalist assassination campaigns. Today black taxis take tourists on tours of the city's sectarian murals. They are now outnumbered by private hire minicabs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ33C - The Crumlin Road Courthouse, commonly referred to as The Crum, located on Crumlin Road in North Belfast, Northern Ireland, postcode BT14 6ST. The image shows the exterior of the nineteenth-century courthouse, with ornate stone detailing and iron railings in the foreground, reflecting the building's imposing civic design.
Completed in the Victorian period, the courthouse formed part of a significant complex of judicial and penal buildings in this area of Belfast, most notably its proximity to Crumlin Road Gaol. The courthouse played a central role in Northern Ireland's legal system and is closely associated with key periods of social and political history, including the Troubles.
Architecturally, the building demonstrates the grandeur and authority typical of Victorian civic architecture, with decorative façades, classical elements, and elevated positioning above the street. Over time, security measures such as fencing and restricted access have become part of the site's visual character, reflecting changing uses and concerns.
Now repurposed as a visitor attraction and event venue, the Crumlin Road Courthouse forms part of Belfast's wider heritage tourism offer, interpreting the city's judicial history alongside its complex social past. Photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, the image documents an important historic landmark within North Belfast and is suitable for editorial use relating to architecture, history, justice, and urban regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23D4 - Transport for London - TfL - Electric scooters
Rental electric scooters (e-scooters) are the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places within London - and even this is limited to specific boroughs. It is still illegal to use privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters on public roads.
A new form of transport
We want to explore new, environmentally-friendly forms of transport that can be used to reduce road congestion in London - but we need to make sure that any alternatives are safe for both users and non-users alike.
The current rental e-scooter trial trial is helping us test the best ways to protect the public.
Rental e-scooters have specific safety features installed. For example, they are limited to a speed of 12.5mph and have lights that are always on throughout any rental.
Our current trial of rental e-scooters is expected to run to autumn 2023. We are currently running a competitive procurement process for the new phase of London's rental e-scooter trial, and operators will be selected on their ability to meet strict safety requirements and high operating standards.
Use electric scooters legally
The London e-scooter rental scheme is approved by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters are not legal to use on public roads.
E-scooters and powered transporters may be used on private land with permission from the landowner or occupier but several laws make it illegal and/or spell out the penalties if you're caught riding one on public roads

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYKTAA - In the UK, street parties are mainly known as private residents' events without wider neighbourhood publicity and have a festive cultural meaning, especially in England and southern Wales. They have historically been held to commemorate major national events, such as VE Day or for royal events such as jubilees, with bunting dressing the street, and children having fun in the street. An estimated 10 million people took part in street parties in 1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
The tradition seems to have begun in the United Kingdom after World War I as residents' organized peace teas to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
The tradition was boosted for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 with about 1 million people joining in street parties. For the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June 2012 about 2 million took part.
Some street parties are held annually or at any time for residents to meet their neighbours in a traffic-free street in a private street party. Some street parties are public events taking many forms.
An application may need to be made to the local authority to close a road for a street party, who will arrange a temporary traffic regulation order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The council may charge a fee if traffic needs to be diverted

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJHF - No seatbelt a factor in 30% of UK road deaths in 2021
Some 1558 people lost their lives in crashes last year, up from 1460 in pre-pandemic 2019
New statistics released by the UK government have revealed that the number of road fatalities increased by 7% year on year in 2021, with 1558 people losing their lives in crashes.
The figure is up from 1460 deaths in 2020, when Covid-related restrictions heavily impacted levels of traffic on UK roads, but down 11% on pre-pandemic 2019, largely because numbers in 2021 were also kept down by lockdowns.
Some 128,209 casualties of varying severity occurred in 2021, which was down 16% on 2019, equating to 425 casualties per billion miles - also a drop from 2019.
The figures also revealed that pedal cyclist fatalities dropped by 21%, following an increase in 2020, associated with the pandemic. However, the number of cyclist casualties slightly increased by around 1%.
While the overall number of road deaths is down on pre-pandemic levels, the fatality rate per billion miles driven has increased, suggesting little progress is being made in making our roads safer, said Simon Williams, the RAC's spokesman on road safety.
We urge the government to publish its updated road-safety plan, which focuses on both improving car safety including mandating technology such as intelligent speed assist in new cars as well as measures to tackle poor driving standards and illegal behaviour behind the wheel.
A deeper dive into the figures showed that not wearing a seatbelt contributed to 30% of road deaths in 2021, a figure that increased to 47% at night.
The Department for Transport said that 34% of men killed in car accidents weren't wearing a seatbelt, compared with 20% of women.
The statistics also showed that people aged between 17 and 29 were the most likely to lose their life when not wearing a seatbelt, making up 40% of the overall figure.

also known as vehicle tax, car tax, and more controversially as road tax, and formerly as a tax disc) is an annual tax that is levied as an excise duty and which must be paid for most types of powered vehicles which are to be used (or parked) on public roads in the United Kingdom. Registered vehicles that are not being used or parked on public roads and which have been taxed since 31 January 1998, must be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to avoid VED. In 2016, VED generated approximately £6 billion for the Exchequer.
A vehicle tax was first introduced in Britain in 1888. In 1920, an excise duty was introduced that was specifically applied to motor vehicles
initially it was hypothecated (ring-fenced or earmarked) for road construction and paid directly into a special Road Fund. After 1937, this reservation of vehicle revenue for roads was ended, and instead the revenue was paid into the Consolidated Fund the general pot of money held by government. Since then, maintenance of the UK road network has been funded out of general taxation, of which VED is a part

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XF8W - A road in Warrington has been slammed for having what's claimed to be the biggest pothole in the Cheshire town.
Thelwall Lane, in Latchford, is lined with houses and businesses and it's suffered due to the worsening state of the road.
Warrington South Conservative MP Andy Carter questioned if it was the biggest pothole in his constituency.
The condition of the road, which runs next to the Manchester Ship Canal, has visibly deteriorated over winter.
It's the only route for large wagons and trucks to access industrial sites and units at the bottom, which has increased the pothole's size.
The road is owned by Peel Ports Ltd, yet is due for adoption' by Warrington Borough Council.
Andy Carter said there are plans to repair and resurface the whole lane, yet a timescale for the work is unknown.
He wrote: Is this largest pot hole in Warrington South?
I've heard from residents and businesses based on Thelwall Lane in Latchford about the worsening state of the road over the last few weeks.
The road is due for adoption by Warrington Council but is currently owned by Peel Ports.
I've been advised that there is a plan to repair and totally resurface. I've written to the CEO of Peel to ask for a timescale for the work to be completed.

Plans for permanent traveller sites in Cheltenham - but will they help stop illegal camps?
The problem is wherever the council puts the sites, the travellers don't want to stop on them
Concerns are mounting that plans for traveller sites will not be enough to stop illegal camps in Cheltenham.
Travellers have pitched up without permission on several patches of land in the spa town over recent weeks.
Cheltenham Borough Council leader, Councillor Steve Jordan, believes this annoying issue will be tackled by the Joint Core Strategy (JCS).
The document includes plans for three traveller and gypsy sites in Cheltenham, two in Gloucester and 78 in the borough of Tewkesbury by 2031.
Recent problems
There have been camps this month in the car parks at the Leisure At Cheltenham centre, Cheltenham Racecourse and North Place.
And travellers moved 15 vehicles onto the borough council-owned Elmfield Park on Monday.
They ignored an eviction order served on Tuesday, but Cheltenham Magistrates' Court today made a new order that they leave.
Plans for more sites
The three sites planned for Cheltenham, all permanent, will be in Castle Dream Stud, in Mill Lane, Charlton Kings, where one traveller family has lived since 2011.
They have permission to stay there until 2022, but this is set to be made permanent.

It has over 400 units across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Malta and Bermuda all run by 9,000 volunteers. Cadets follow a similar ethos, training plan, and rank structure, to the Royal Navy, and are recognised by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The Sea Cadets' ethos is made up of three parts: its values, its mindset, and the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. The promise made by every cadet who joins the Sea Cadet Corps is as follows:
The Sea Cadet Promise: I promise to serve my God, my King, my country, and, the Sea Cadet Corps and to obey the orders of my superior officers. I will be proud of my uniform and be smart and seamanlike in wearing it, and, always do my duty. Note: My God refers to an individual's own faith and is intended to apply equally to those from all faiths or none. (Sea Cadets' Ethos, 2019, p4)
The ethos is underpinned by the Sea Cadet Values which are: Courage, Commitment, Discipline, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty, and Integrity. These are taught by staff throughout the time cadets are with a unit, there is also an expectation that Chaplains will take a lead in such delivery

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDEM - Chapel-en-le-Frith (/ˌtʃæpəl ˌɒn lə ˈfrɪθ/) is a town and civil parish in the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England.
It has been dubbed the Capital of the Peak, in reference to the Peak District, historically the upperland areas between the Saxon lands (below the River Trent) and the Vikings lands (which came as far south as Dore, Sheffield).
The town was established by the Normans in the 12th century, originally as a hunting lodge within the Forest of High Peak. This led to the French-derived name Chapel-en-le-Frith (chapel in the forest). (It appears in an English form in a Latin record as 'Chapell in the ffryth', in 1401.) The population at the 2011 census was 8,635
Although most of the area is outside the National Park boundary, the town is in the western part of the Peak District. To the north and south lie the Dark Peak highlands, which are made up of millstone grit and are heather-covered moorlands, rugged and bleak. These include Chinley Churn and South Head with, a little further off, Kinder Scout, which looms above the whole area. To the east is the gentler and more pastoral White Peak, consisting largely of limestone grasslands, nevertheless with spectacular bluffs and the occasional gorge. Combs Moss, a gritstone 'edge', dominates the valley in which Chapel lies from the south and Eccles Pike rises sharply above the town to its west and provides a commanding 360° viewpoint.

The Appleton Thorn Village Hall near Warrington has been named the best in the country in CAMRA's Club of the Year 2019 awards, one of the most respected and well-known club awards in the UK.
This is the second time and almost 10 years to the date that the former school has won the accolade for its ever-changing range of seven beers from regional and micro-breweries. The attractive sandstone building is the hub of the community, housing a comfortable bar area, small pool room, garden area and bowling green. Home cooked food is served at Sunday lunchtime and the function room hosts quizzes, live music and an annual beer festival in October. The recent addition of a gin bar has proved popular with the club's members.
Keith Spencer, Club of the Year organiser said: This club is the very hub of the community, from hosting pre-school events to yoga, dance, Guides and rehearsals for the Vale Royal String Orchestra! It is a very deserving winning of this year's Club of the Year competition and a shining example of the intrinsic role that clubs can play in their local areas.
Chris Massey, Steward of the Appleton Thorn Village Hall said: It is a huge honour to not only win the Club of the Year title once but twice! We are a true community club and take pride in hosting a range of activities and events for our locals and serving great beers as well.
The CAMRA Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine, with the simple aim of finding the clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition. Clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and judged by a panel of volunteer CAMRA members throughout the year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB549 - Moore is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England, located midway between Runcorn and Warrington. It has a population of 807.
Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNHKHN - Cadent Gas owns, operates and maintains the largest natural gas distribution network in the United Kingdom, transporting gas to 11 million homes and businesses across North West England, West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England and North London.
Cadent Gas Limited represents four of the eight gas distribution networks in the United Kingdom. Following production and importation, all gas in the UK passes through National Grid's national transmission system, before entering the distribution networks. The distribution network providers, one of which is Cadent Limited, are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of the gas to the end consumer, on behalf of the chosen supplier.
The company does not produce or own the gas that passes through their pipeline networks but 50% of UK gas customers are served by their pipeline system.

Hilton Park features a large tower structure which used by Top Rank to house a restaurant. It closed and has been empty since the 1980s.
It became the UK's busiest service area, and was an obvious target when Granada wanted to add retail units to the front of their service areas. These units have changed brands many times over the years, including being used as a Trucker's Lounge and Moto's first KFC. They are mostly closed now, though one is used by the Central Motorway Policing Group.
The southbound service area has a picnic area far from the main building, with its own car park, which most people miss because they're looking for the main facilities. It is a legacy feature of some older service areas and only actually has one table left. Most of the parking spaces have now been turned into a Tesla charging area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYA7 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21Y9 - AA Limited, trading as The AA (formerly The Automobile Association), is a British motoring association.
Founded in 1905, it provides vehicle insurance, driving lessons, breakdown cover, loans, motoring advice, road maps and other services. The association demutualised in 1999, to become a private limited company, and from 2014 a public limited company (PLC). In 2002 the AA Motoring Trust was created to continue its public interest and road safety activities.
In 2021, a consortium led by Tower Brook Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus completed the acquisition of AA Limited (formerly known as AA PLC).
The Automobile Association was founded in 1905, to help motorists avoid police speed traps, in response to the Motor Car Act 1903 which introduced new penalties for breaking the speed limit, for reckless driving with fines, endorsements and the possibility of jail for speeding and other driving offences. The act also required drivers to hold a driving licence (which was obtained without a test on payment of five shillings at a post office) and to display a registration plate on their vehicle

Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C6RE7D - St Andrew's Church is in the village of Tarvin, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Chester. Its benefice is united with that of St Peter, Duddon
The church is built in red sandstone with a Welsh slate roof. Entry is through the west wall of the west tower. The plan consists of a five-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, a north aisle with a chapel (the Bruen chapel) at its east end, and a south aisle with a south porch. The doorway to the tower is Tudor in style, the second storey has deeply recessed quatrefoil windows and a clock on all four sides. The top is embattled, and the remains of former pinnacles are at the corners
In the churchyard are six structures that are listed at Grade II. These are the gates and gate piers to the churchyard, a sandstone sundial dating from the mid-18th century, the tombchests of John Minshull and his daughter, William and Elizabeth Hilton, William Sandbach and others, and the tombstone of Beatrix Hollinsworth. The churchyard also contains the war graves of three British soldiers and a Canadian Army soldier of World War I

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXW - A manhole cover or maintenance hole cover is a removable plate forming the lid over the opening of a manhole, an opening large enough for a person to pass through that is used as an access point for an underground vault or pipe. It is designed to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and to keep out unauthorized persons and material.
Ancient Roman sewer grate made out of lime sandstone, 1st century AD, excavated at Vindobona (present-day Vienna)
Manhole covers date back at least to the era of ancient Rome, which had sewer grates made from stone. Manhole covers are often made out of cast iron, concrete or a combination of the two. This makes them inexpensive, strong, and heavy, usually weighing more than 113 kilograms (249 lb). The weight helps to keep them in place when traffic passes over them, and makes it difficult for unauthorized people without suitable tools to remove them.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGDG - A police box is a public telephone kiosk or callbox for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. It was used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century from the early 1920s. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold detainees until the arrival of transport. 1929 Gilbert Mackenzie Trench design
The blue police box is often associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is externally disguised as a 1960s British police box.
The BBC science-fiction television series Doctor Who features a time machine, the TARDIS, disguised as a Mackenzie Trench-style police box. In the show, although a TARDIS is normally capable of disguising itself to blend into its surroundings, the ship's chameleon circuit broke down in England in 1963, and left the TARDIS seen most often in the show stuck as a police box, except for a brief period in one adventure seen in 1985. Doctor Who was originally broadcast from 1963 to 1989
as police boxes were phased out in the 1970s, over time the image of the blue police box became associated as much with Doctor Who as with the police. In 1996, the BBC applied for a trademark to use the blue police box design in merchandising associated with Doctor Who. In 1998, the Metropolitan Police filed an objection to the trademark claim, maintaining that they owned the rights to the police box image. In 2002, the Patent Office ruled in favour of the BBC, arguing that there was no evidence that the Metropolitan Policeor any other police forcehad ever registered the image as a trademark. In addition, the BBC had been selling merchandise based on the image for over three decades without complaint

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989X2 - Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
Appleton appeared in the Domesday survey as Epeltune, meaning the tun where the apples grew.
Bawming the Thorn
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Mr Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.
Local schoolchildren dance around the tree in the style of a maypole chanting verses to the tune of Bonnie Dundee, with the following repeated chorus:
Up with fresh garlands this midsummer morn,
Up with red ribbons on Appleton Thorn.
Come lasses and lads to the Thorn Tree today
To bawm it and shout as ye bawm it Hurray!
Bawming means decorating during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the crucifixion. Thorn Cross (HM Prison) is in Appleton Thorn, on the site formerly occupied by Royal Naval Air Station HMS Blackcap, a wartime aircrew training and aircraft repair airfield. There are a number of graves of aircrew who died at HMS Blackcap, mainly in flying accidents, in St Cross churchyard, known locally as the war graves.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEEK - Deansgate is a main road (part of the A56) through Manchester city centre, England. It runs roughly northsouth in a near straight route through the western part of the city centre and is the longest road in the city centre at over one mile long.
Deansgate is one of the city's oldest thoroughfares. In Roman times its route passed close to the Roman fort of Mamucium and led from the River Medlock where there was a ford and the road to Deva (Chester). Along its length were several civilian buildings and a mansio in the vicinity of the Hilton Hotel. Part of it was called Aldport Lane from Saxon times. (Aldport was the Saxon name for Castlefield.) Until the 1730s the area was rural but became built up after the development of a quay on the river.
The road is named after the lost River Dene, which may have flowed along the Hanging Ditch connecting the River Irk to the River Irwell, at the street's northern end. (Gate derives from the Norse gata, meaning way).
By the late 19th century Deansgate was an area of varied uses: its northern end had shopping and substantial office buildings while further south were slums and a working class area around St John's Church (St John Street remaining upper middle class). The Wood Street Mission began to address the social problems in 1869 and its work continues in a very different form. From Peter Street southwards the eastern side was dominated by the viaducts of the Great Northern and Manchester South Junction Railways, while the Rochdale Canal crossed below Deansgate to connect with the other waterways beyond. In the late 20th century Deansgate was home to the head office of the Manchester Evening News newspaper, now replaced by part of the Spinningfields development.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN2X - A fortune cookie is a crisp and sugary cookie wafer usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil with a piece of paper inside, a fortune, usually an aphorism, or a vague prophecy. The message inside may also include a Chinese phrase with translation and/or a list of lucky numbers used by some as lottery numbers. Fortune cookies are often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States, Canada and other countries, but they are not Chinese in origin. The exact origin of fortune cookies is unclear, though various immigrant groups in California claim to have popularized them in the early 20th century. They most likely originated from cookies made by Japanese immigrants to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Japanese version did not have the Chinese lucky numbers and was eaten with tea.
Fortune cookies before the early 20th century were all made by hand. The fortune cookie industry changed dramatically after the fortune cookie machine was invented by Shuck Yee from Oakland, California. The machine allowed for mass production of fortune cookies which subsequently allowed the cookies to drop in price to become the novelty and courtesy dessert many Americans are familiar with after their meals at most Chinese restaurants today.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4558202286 - 'A recumbent bicycle is a bicycle that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position. Most recumbent riders choose this type of design for ergonomic reasons: the rider's weight is distributed comfortably over a larger area, supported by back and buttocks. On a traditional upright bicycle, the body weight rests entirely on a small portion of the sitting bones, the feet, and the hands.
Recumbents are available in a wide range of configurations, including: long to short wheelbase
large, small, or a mix of wheel sizes
overseat, underseat, or no-hands steering
and rear wheel or front wheel drive. A variant with three wheels is a recumbent tricycle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9WK - In New York City, taxicabs come in two varieties: yellow and green
they are widely recognizable symbols of the city. Taxis painted canary yellow (medallion taxis) are able to pick up passengers anywhere in the five boroughs. Those painted apple green (street hail livery vehicles, commonly known as boro taxis), which began to appear in August 2013, are allowed to pick up passengers in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens (excluding LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport), and Staten Island. Both types have the same fare structure. Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). It also oversees over 40,000 other for-hire vehicles, including black cars, commuter vans and ambulettes.
Taxicab vehicles, each of which must have a medallion to operate, are driven an average of 180 miles per shift. As of March 14, 2014, there were 51,398 individuals licensed to drive medallion taxicabs. There were 13,605 taxicab medallion licenses in existence. By July 2016, that number had dropped slightly to 13,587 medallions, or 18 lower than the 2014 total. Taxi patronage has declined since 2011 due to competition from rideshare services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6XP - Charing Cross railway station (also known as London Charing Cross)[4] is a central London railway terminus between the Strand and Hungerford Bridge in the City of Westminster. It is the terminus of the South Eastern Main Line to Dover via Ashford. All trains are operated by Southeastern, which provides the majority of commuter and regional services to south-east London and Kent. It is connected to Charing Cross Underground station and is near to Embankment Underground station and Embankment Pier.
The station was originally opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1864. It takes its name from its proximity to the road junction Charing Cross, the notional centre of London from which distances from the city are measured. During the 19th century the station became the main London terminus for continental traffic via boat trains, and served several prestigious international services. It was badly damaged by a roof collapse in 1905 and extensively rebuilt, subsequently becoming an important meeting point for military and government traffic during World War I. By this time, Charing Cross station was seen as out of date by some politicians and proposals were made to replace Hungerford Bridge with a road bridge or road/rail combination, with the station moving to the south bank of the River Thames in the case of a road-only replacement. The station was bombed several times during World War II, and was rebuilt afterwards, re-opening in 1951. In the late 1980s, the station complex was redesigned by Terry Farrell and rebuilt to accommodate a modern office block, now known as Embankment Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM253H - Tatton Park is an historic estate in Cheshire, England, north of the town of Knutsford. It contains a mansion, Tatton Hall, a medieval manor house, Tatton Old Hall, Tatton Park Gardens, a farm and a deer park of 2,000 acres (8.1 km2). It is a popular visitor attraction and hosts over a hundred events annually. The estate is owned by the National Trust, who administer it jointly with Cheshire East Council. Since 1999, it has hosted North West England's annual Royal Horticultural Society flower show.
There is evidence of human habitation in the area of the estate going back to the Iron Age. In medieval times the village of Tatton was on the site. This has since disappeared but the area of the village and its roadways are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. By the end of the 15th century the estate was owned by the Stanley family who built and occupied the Old Hall. By the 1580s this building had been enlarged and it was owned by the Brereton family. In 1598 the estate was bought by Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas and his children rarely visited the estate and it was loaned to tenants. At the end of the 17th century the estate was owned by John Egerton, Sir Thomas' grandson, who built a new house on the site of the present mansion, some 0.75 miles (1 km) to the west of the Old Hall. This mansion, Tatton Hall, was extensively altered and extended between 1780 and 1813. In 1795 the estate covered 251,000 acres (1,020 km2) (392 sq.miles). The estate remained in the ownership of the Egerton family until the last Lord Egerton died without issue in 1958. He left the house to the National Trust and gave them the park in lieu of death duties. However, as the estate itself was sold by his executors, Cheshire County Council committed to a 99-year lease in place of an endowment to ensure that it was preserved for the benefit of the nation. The Trust's ownership (run now by Cheshire East Council) is some 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) (3.1 sq.miles). The Hall and Par

Partnership names changed and the firm was variously known as Parr & Co, and Parr, Lyon
more colloquially it was known as The Warrington Bank.
Parr's remained essentially a local bank with offices in Warrington, Runcorn and St Helens until 1865 when the it became a joint stock bank under the name Parr's Banking Company. Helped by a series of acquisitions, including the National Bank of Liverpool, Parr's built up its presence in Cheshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire
by 1890 there were 22 branches and 21 sub-branches.
The Bank's most important strategic move came in 1891 when it purchased the small London bank of Fuller, Banbury, Nix & Co.. This gave Parr's a seat on the London Clearing House and, in contrast to the nearby Bank of Liverpool it immediately moved the head office down to London. With Fuller giving the Bank an initial London presence, the substance was provided by the acquisition of the Alliance Bank in 1892.
The Alliance had emerged from the financial reconstruction which had seen it lose its Liverpool and Manchester offices and now had 12 branches in London
in recognition of Alliance's importance the name of the Bank was changed to Parr's Banking Company and the Alliance Bank. Other smaller London banks were acquired and in 1896 it bought the Consolidated Bank, only slightly smaller than the Alliance, but this time a London bank with branches in Manchester. At that point, the name was returned to Parr's Bank.
By the outbreak of war in 1914 Parr's had almost 400 branches and sub-branches. In 1918 Parr's agreed to amalgamate with the London County and Westminster Bank. The Chairman of Parr's made the case: We gain access to a very large area in the Home Counties. They gain a first-class introduction to Lancashire & beyond.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFFM - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4KYM - Around ten Walsall College students and apprentices will be offered the unique chance to put their stamp on the new Walsall Business and Sports Hub (WBSH) scheme. It follows an agreement made between the College and Interserve Construction (part of the international support services and construction group Interserve), which is leading on the development. There is also an opportunity for at least 20 students to get involved in work placements in the wider Interserve operation including business administration and project-based work experience.
Students will start their placements with Interserve by January and they will see both traditional and modern construction techniques whilst working closely alongside project and support staff as well as learning valuable employability skills.
Construction work, which started at the end of August, remains on schedule ahead of the official opening in September 2015. Heavy goods vehicles are expected to make the first delivery of steelwork this week as the new build begins to take shape.
The state-of-the-art development, adjacent to Walsall College's main £64 million Wisemore Campus on Littleton Street West, will include a business incubation centre for start-up businesses, sports hall with badminton courts to Sport England standards, dance and fitness studios, sports training and injury clinic and a fine dining restaurant. It forms part of Walsall Council's long-term £400 million Gigaport initiative, which is creating business and office development along the ring road corridor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0BH - These underground toilets in St Giles' were built in 1895. They were for gentlemen only, as there was no question in Victorian times of building an outdoor public convenience for women.
Work on excavating the site had started by 17 August 1895, when the following report appeared in Jackson's Oxford Journal:
DISCOVERY OF RELICS. During the excavation which has been made in connection with the new underground public convenience in St. Giles's the workmen came upon a large quantity of bones and horns, apparently those of oxen and deer, at a depth of about 7ft., a pair of horns being in excellent preservation
they also found a stoneware jug, minus the handle and broken at the spout, and two small cups made of red pottery and glazed, both much damaged.
Toilet railings
The work was completed by 12 October 1895, when Jackson's Oxford Journal reported:
Corporation works
An underground convenience has been built near the southern end of St. Giles-street, containing two w.c.'s and four urinals. These are reached by a flight of York stone steps from the surface of the street, and the structure is surrounded by a strong cast-iron railing on York stone base. The fittings are in the best white glazed ware, and the whole of the brickwork is lined internally with white and buff glazed bricks, the floor being of vitrified tiles laid upon concrete. The convenience is roofed with cement concrete carried upon steel girders, with pavement lights, cast-iron ventilators, &c.
There was originally just one entrance (the present southern one), and the railings surrounding are inscribed with the name of their maker, LUCY & CO, OXFORD (right) A second entrance with matching railings was built at a later date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYW94 - Halliwell Jones Stadium is a rugby league stadium in Warrington, England that is the home ground of Warrington Wolves. It has also staged Challenge Cup semi-finals, the European Nations Final and the National League Grand Finals' Day.
By the late 1990s, Warrington RLFC's spiritual home Wilderspool Stadium had become decrepit and unfit for purpose, and so the club looked to move to a new stadium. Before settling on the site which had formerly housed the Tetley Walker brewery, a site in Burtonwood was considered but these plans were rejected. The last competitive game at Wilderspool (after 105 years at the ground) was played on 21 September 2003, when Warrington beat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 52-12.
The stadium was notable for bucking the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium. There were originally 4 stands in the stadium the North Stand (reserved seating), the East Stand (originally unreserved seating but later became reserved seating), the South Stand (home terracing), and the West Stand (visitors' terracing and overflow of home terracing). It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby.
The official capacity of the stadium is 15,200.

4 is the smallest squared prime (p2) and the only even number in this form. It has an aliquot sum of 3 which is itself prime. The aliquot sequence of 4 has 4 members (4, 3, 1, 0) and is accordingly the first member of the 3-aliquot tree.
A number is a multiple of 4 if its last two digits are a multiple of 4. For example, 1092 is a multiple of 4 because 92 = 4×23.
Only one number has an aliquot sum of 4 and that is squared prime 9.
A four-sided plane figure is a quadrilateral (quadrangle) or square, sometimes also called a tetragon. A circle divided by 4 makes right angles. Because of it, four (4) is the base number of plane (mathematics). Four cardinal directions, four seasons, duodecimal system, and vigesimal system are based on four.
A solid figure with four faces is a tetrahedron. The regular tetrahedron is the simplest Platonic solid. A tetrahedron, which can also be called a 3-simplex, has four triangular faces and four vertices. It is the only self-dual regular polyhedron.
Four-dimensional space is the highest-dimensional space featuring more than three convex regular figures.
In Buddhism the four Noble Truths are:
Dukkha – The Noble Truth of Suffering
Samudaya – The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering
Nirodha – The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering
Magga – The Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering
The Chinese, Vietnamese, the Korean and the Japanese are superstitious about the number four because it is a homonym for 'Death' in their languages.
Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster which began transmission on 2 November 1982. Although largely commercially self-funded, it is ultimately publicly-owned
originally a subsidiary of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), the station is now owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation, a public body established in 1990, coming into operation in 1993. With the conversion of the Wenvoe transmitter in Wales to digital on 31 March 2010, Channel 4 became an entirely UK-wide TV channel for the first time.
The channel was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to the television licence–funded BBC's two services and the single commercial broadcasting network, ITV.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HEH - The London Bus is one of London's principal icons, the archetypal red rear-entrance AEC Routemaster being recognized worldwide. Although the Routemaster has been phased out of regular service, with only one route still using the vehicles (15H), the majority of buses in London are still red and therefore the red double-decker bus remains a widely recognised symbol of the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HWY - Tower Bridge (built 18861894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name, and has become an iconic symbol of London.
The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers.
The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour

Caustic, bleak, no bullshit—not that you’d expect anything less from the plebian punk act that married nihilism with hooliganism. In a gaunt, football-chant chorus, the band declares no future for anybody, be it civilian, paramilitary, or otherwise: “Ulster / There ain’t no winners.” The final lines of “Ulster” are even grimmer, as singer Jimmy Pursey predicts an outcome for those ensnared in the sectarian web of violence: “And now you’re lyin’ in your hospital bed / You can still hear the bullets rushing past your head / No more fun for you ain’t no more / You’ve ended like the rest and now you’re dead.”
Not one of my most fav tracks, but one I think suitable for this violent week in Northern Ireland and Belfast in particular. The battle of the Boyne celebrations split the community in a way that the slightest spark may result in a burning car, watercannon on the street or more injuries being ferried to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal Hospitals. They are experts in the field so fortunately you would be in good hands (medical, not catholic or protestant).
Many on the streets this week are apparently teenagers who never experienced the original 70's/80's 'troubles'.
Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann was reported to be at Broadway for several hours during the trouble. She believes that those taking part in the rioting were not from the area.
'Mostly what I saw was people who came from other parts of Belfast, who would be known as anti-social elements, who had taken a lot of drink and were attacking the police,' she said.
'I am appealing to young people who may be caught up in this behaviour to stay away from Broadway, Ardoyne or anywhere else there may be a chance of trouble.'
There is a broad desire for peace across the community. Lets all hope normal more peaceful service can resume soon....

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7J - This image shows a well-worn blue flight case stencilled with the words Lynott Thin Lizzy Fragile, referencing the touring equipment used by Thin Lizzy and frontman Phil Lynott. Such cases were essential for transporting guitars, amplifiers, and other delicate instruments between venues during extensive national and international tours.
The scuffed surface, chipped paint, and taped label remnants speak to years of use on the road, offering a tangible glimpse into the physical reality of touring life for rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s. Flight cases like this were handled by road crew members responsible for safely moving valuable equipment between trucks, stages, and backstage areas.
Thin Lizzy were one of Ireland's most influential rock bands, known for blending hard rock with folk influences and for iconic tracks such as The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak. Objects associated with their touring years now carry strong cultural and historical significance, bridging the gap between music performance and the unseen labour behind live shows.
Photographed under low light, the image emphasises texture, wear, and typography, making it well suited to editorial use covering music history, classic rock heritage, touring culture, backstage life, and archival memorabilia connected to influential bands and musicians.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
About time I featured a slab of Detroit Techno here.
Model 500 &
Infiniti were names used by Juan Atkins. He is widely credited as the originator of techno music, specifically Detroit techno along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. The three, sometimes called the Belleville Three, attended high school together in Belleville, Michigan, near Detroit.
At age sixteen, Atkins heard electronic music for the first time, which would prove to be a life-changing experience. In late-1990s interviews, he recalls the sound of synthesizers as being like 'UFOs landing.' He soon had his first synthesizer and abandoned playing funk bass.
“ When I first heard synthesizers dropped on records it was great… like UFOs landing on records, so I got one.
…It wasn’t any one particular group that turned me on to synthesizers, but 'Flashlight' (Parliament's number one R &
B hit from early 1978) was the first record I heard where maybe 75 percent of the production was electronic.'
The first publicized UFO sightings were usually referred to using the term mystery airships, which were commonly seen and described as such during the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th.
The term foo fighters was used by American fighter pilots during World War II to refer to UFOs.
The first widely publicized U.S. sighting, reported by private pilot Kenneth Arnold in June 1947, gave rise to the popular terms 'flying saucer' and 'flying disc', of which the former is still sometimes used, even though Arnold said the most of the objects he saw were not totally circular and one was crescent-shaped (see Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting for details). In addition, the infamous Roswell UFO Incident occurred at about the same time, which only served to further fuel public interest in the topic.
The term 'UFO' was first suggested in 1952 by Cpt. Edward J. Ruppelt, who headed Project Blue Book, then the USAF's official investigation of UFOs. Ruppelt felt that 'flying saucer' did not reflect the diversity of the sightings. He suggested that UFO should be pronounced as a word – you-foe. However it is now usually pronounced by forming each letter: U.F.O. His term was quickly adopted by the United States Air Force, which also briefly used 'UFOB'. The Air Force initially defined UFOs as those objects that remain unidentified after scrutiny by expert investigators, though today the term UFO is often used for any unexplained sighting regardless of whether it has been investigated.
Because the term UFO is ambiguous – referring either to any unidentified sighting, or in popular usage to alien spacecraft – and the public and media ridicule sometimes associated with the topic, some investigators now prefer to use other terms such as unidentified aerial phenomenon (or UAP).
For trivia buffs, the equivalent acronym for UFO in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian is OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado, Objeto Voador Não Identificado, Objet volant non identifié or Oggetto Volante Non Identificato).

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4756843521 - 'When backpacking around various places in my mis-spent youth I often used the Lonely Planet guides. Great guides, but when travelling you were never alone really as whatever off the beaten track cafe you were eating BBQ guinea pig or whtever, you were always surrounded by other backpackers planning their next meal using that self same guide!
The name Lonely Planet to me conjours up an idea of this packed green and blue rock surrounded by some unimaginable emptyness. There is so much of it that the light-year, ie the time it takes light or an image to be seen a year later away, is the only practical unit of measurement to be used.
To get a feel for these distances, reflected sunlight from the Moon's surface takes 1.2–1.3 seconds to travel the distance to the Earth's surface for us to see it. The surface of the moon is roughly 376,300 kilometres from the surface of the Earth, on average. 376,300 km ÷ 300,000 km/s (roughly the speed of light) ≈ 1.25 seconds).
The most distant space probe, Voyager 1, was about 14 light-hours away from Earth as of 9 March 2007 (2007 -03-09)[update]. It took that space probe 30 years to cover that distance,[17] and will take over 18,000 years to reach one light-year at the same speed.
The nearest known star (other than the Sun), Proxima Centauri, is about 4.22 light-years away. Our galaxy, The Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years across.
So for any intelligent life form in the solar system of Proxima Centauri, excitement must be building for the 2006 world cup, where hopes are pinned on a very young Wayne Rooney to come good for England and for Sven-Goran Eriksson to continue as coach onward to 2010.
Its a funny old world eh? When you consider, this isn't too bad a place after all. Good planets are hard to find, lets look after this one!

He has had his face fungus now for well over 20 years. On one occasion when he had it shaved off at the barbers he was so unrecognisable that his next door neighbour thought he was a burgler, who had climbed into the back garden! He was simply unrecognisable!
Bob does alsorts around the centre which has now grown into quite a multi-faceted complex. There is even a working Brewery making traditionally crafted cask ales on the site. Yep I do have a nose for that kind of stuff!
In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom and knowledge, sexual virility, masculinity, or high social status
and, conversely, filthiness, crudeness, or an eccentric disposition. In many cultures, beards are associated with nature and outdoorsmen. I remember in my mis-spent youth enjoying the band ZZ Top, strangely the only member of the band without a beard is in fact called Frank Beard (credited as Rube Beard on early LP's). However it must be said that he did in fact sport some facial hair, generally only a trimmed mustache.
In 1984, the Gillette Company (one of the worlds largest razor manufacturers) reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill (the bearded members of ZZ Top) $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial. They allegedly declined, saying 'We're too ugly without 'em'. Apparently the name came from blues guitar master B. B. King. The band had planned to call themselves ZZ. King, but felt it was too similar. Since B.B. King was at the 'top', they settled on ZZ Top.

I notice that George has a tie on here, as Chumbawamba once wrote, 'just cos you have a tie on doesn't make you important'. I notice that you rarely see Mr C in a tie, most likely a white shirt opened at the first button. Thats what the courses tell you to do in order to reach out to the shell suit clasees. I would guess George (or Gideon as he was christened) could drop this informality for Tatton.
George is heir to the Osborne baronetcy (of Ballentaylor in the County of Waterford, Ireland). This makes him a part of what is known in Ireland as the Ascendancy, the old Anglo-Irish aristocracy. His father, Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet, is co-founder of the fabric and wallpapers designers, Osborne &
Little. Osborne's wealth is estimated at £4.3m by the New Statesman www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2009/10/oxford-universit... . He is also reported to be next in line to inherit a substantial share of Osborne &
Little, his father's luxury wallpaper company, which is thought to be worth over £1 billion. so he would fit well in one of Britains safest Tory seats here in Tatton. Hopefully he would look to the needs of his constituents lower down the social ladder, customers of Cheshire Peaks &
Plains Housing Trust, Contour Homes or Great Places Housing Group as well as the more affluent.
After achieving an upper 2nd class degree at Magdalen College at Oxford University and being a member of the Bullingdon Club, a private dining club of Oxford University students (which was 'infamous for riotous behaviour' and was open only to sons of aristocratic families and the wealthy. Osborne's friends David Cameron and Nat Rothschild were also members of the club), he tried to persue a career as a journalist, but then moved to a vacent position at Conservative Central Office. he cut his teeth on the Prime Minister's Questions team for the various Conservative incumbent leaders Hague, Howard and cameron. Indeed, Osbourne and Cameron are godfathers to each other's children, so this may make his position safer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHW3 - The A1 is the longest numbered road in the United Kingdom, at 410 miles (660 km). It connects London, the capital of England, with Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It passes through or near north London, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Baldock, Letchworth Garden City, Biggleswade, St Neots, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Stamford, Grantham, Newark-on-Trent, Retford, Doncaster, Pontefract, York, Wetherby, Ripon, Darlington, Durham, Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Morpeth, Alnwick and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
It was designated by the Ministry of Transport in 1921, and for much of its route it followed various branches of the historic Great North Road, the main deviation being between Boroughbridge and Darlington. The course of the A1 has changed where towns or villages have been bypassed, and where new alignments have taken a slightly different route. Several sections of the route have been upgraded to motorway standard and designated A1(M). Between the M25 (near London) and the A720 (near Edinburgh) the road is part of the unsigned Euroroute E15 from Inverness to Algeciras.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4541249685 - 'The A1 is 409 miles long and the longest numbered road in the UK. It links Edinburgh near Waverley Station in Scotland and London at St. Paul's Cathedral in England. It passes through and near Hatfield, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Leeds, York, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
For much of its path it follows the Great North Road. Several sections of the route are classified as motorway. The modern course of this ancient route diverges where it passes through a town or village that has been bypassed, or where new motorway takes a more direct route. Between the M25 (near London) and A696 (near Newcastle upon Tyne) the road is part of the unsigned Euroroute E15 from Inverness to Algeciras.
The great North Road coaching route used by mail coaches between London, York and Edinburgh. The many inns on the road, many of which still survive, were staging posts on the coach routes, providing accommodation, stabling for the horses and replacement mounts. However, virtually none of the surviving coaching inns can be seen while driving on the A1, because the modern route now bypasses the towns in which the inns are to be found.
At Alconbury, the Great North Road joined the Old North Road, an older route from London which follows the Roman Ermine Street. Here a milestone records mileages to London via both routes: 65 by the Old North Road and 68 by the Great North Road. The journey has a number of food references. From Alconbury the Great North Road follows the line of Ermine Street north, through Stilton and Stamford as far as Colsterworth (at the A151 junction). Inns on this section include the George at Stamford and the Bell Inn at Stilton, the original sellers of Stilton cheese.
Scotch Corner, in North Yorkshire, marks the point where the traffic for Glasgow and the west of Scotland divides from that for Edinburgh, as it has for hundreds of years before motor traffic. As well as a hotel there have been a variety of homes for the transport café, now a sad motorway services.
The Winchelsea Arms was an inn on a long straight section of the Great North Road near Stretton which was reputed to be a haunt of Dick Turpin. It is now called the Ram Jam ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMLnDuzgkjo ) Inn after a story from those coaching days. A coach passenger undertook to show the landlady the secret of drawing both mild and bitter beer from the same barrel. Two holes were made and she was left with one thumb rammed against one and the other jammed into the other. The trickster then made off.

The plough like many in centuries past turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds and the remains of previous crops, allowing them to break down. It also aerates the soil, and allows it to hold moisture better. In modern use, a ploughed field is typically left to dry out, and is then harrowed before planting.
Also all the insect life comes to the surface which makes it an attractive prospect for gulls and other bird life. Interestingly the night time constallation of the plough (or big dipper as some call it) is at this time of the year slipping down in the night sky out of sight. By the time wheat or maize is sown here and sprouting, in the longer light evenings we will be missing it and its other easily spotted companion, Orion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEYA7D - Poole Quay, Dorset at dusk, Poole, Dorset BH15 1AB showing Corkers bar and High Street.
Poole Quay is a visitor attraction to the south of the town centre lined with a mixture of traditional public houses, redeveloped warehouses, modern apartment blocks and historic listed buildings. Once the busy centre of Poole's maritime industry, all port activities moved to Hamworthy in the 1970s as the Quay became increasingly popular with tourists.
The Grade II* listed Customs House on the quay-front was built in 1814 and now functions as a restaurant and bar. Nearby the Grade I listed Town Cellars, a medieval warehouse built in the 15th century on the foundations of a 14th century stone building, houses a local history centre.
Scaplen's Court, another Grade I listed building, also dates from the medieval era. The Poole Pottery production factory once stood on the eastern end of the Quay but the site was redeveloped into a luxury apartment block and marina in 2001, although an outlet store remains on the site. Boats regularly depart from the quay during the summer and provide cruises around the harbour and to Brownsea Island, the River Frome and Swanage.
Public artworks along the Quay include Sea Music a large metal sculpture designed by Sir Anthony Caro, and a life-size bronze sculpture of Robert Baden-Powell created to celebrate the founding of the Scout Movement on Brownsea Island. At the western end of the quay near the mouth of Holes Bay is Poole Bridge. Built in 1927, it is the third bridge to be located on the site since 1834
