Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6CR - The historic tugboat John King pictured on the Bristol Floating Harbour, photographed near Underfall Yard on Cumberland Road, Bristol BS1 6XG. The vessel is a well-known feature of Bristol's harbour, representing the city's long association with maritime trade, engineering and inland port activity.
Built as a working harbour tug, John King played a practical role in towing, manoeuvring and servicing vessels within the Floating Harbour system, which was engineered to maintain constant water levels despite tidal changes on the River Avon. The boat's compact, powerful design reflects traditional twentieth-century harbour engineering, prioritising strength, manoeuvrability and reliability.
Today, John King is preserved as part of Bristol's living maritime heritage, frequently seen operating or on display alongside historic dock infrastructure at Underfall Yard. This area remains an active hub for boat maintenance, education and heritage conservation, linking Bristol's industrial past with contemporary waterfront use.
The background of modern apartments and regenerated quayside highlights the contrast between historic working vessels and Bristol's transformed harbourside, where former industrial docks now coexist with residential, cultural and leisure developments. Scenes such as this are commonly used editorially to illustrate themes of harbour regeneration, industrial heritage preservation and the evolving role of working waterfronts in UK cities.
Photographed in daylight with calm harbour waters and surrounding urban development visible, the image offers strong editorial value for subjects including maritime history, heritage vessels, port city regeneration and Britain's working waterways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E5TC64 - Large-scale exterior lettering on the wall of V&A Dundee on the Dundee waterfront in Scotland, beside the River Tay, carrying the uplifting message Be open to the joy you deserve. The image shows the dramatic side wall of Scotland's design museum with its bold white typography, riverside walkway, benches, glass balustrade and open sky, creating a calm, reflective scene that blends architecture, public messaging and place-making. This photograph is useful as an editorial image about Dundee's regeneration, the transformation of former industrial waterfront land into a cultural destination, and the role of major civic buildings in shaping identity, tourism and visitor experience. The wording itself adds a wellbeing angle, suggesting optimism, openness, emotional renewal and the increasingly common use of positive affirming language in public and cultural spaces. The composition also works for themes including Scottish tourism, modern architecture, museum design, inspirational text in the built environment, urban improvement, riverside development and destination marketing. V&A Dundee stands on Riverside Esplanade on Dundee's redeveloped waterfront and is widely promoted as Scotland's design museum, making the image relevant for travel, architecture, culture, regeneration and civic branding stories. The contrast between the huge dark wall, bright text, pale sky and broad river view gives the photograph a clean contemporary look suited to editorial, educational and commercial cultural features. It may also appeal for use in articles about mental wellbeing in public space, accessible museum design, visitor attractions in eastern Scotland, and the way museums now function not just as galleries but as symbols of confidence, ambition and urban revival. The setting, scale and message together create a distinctly modern Scottish waterfront scene with strong visual simplicity and wide thematic usefulness. V&A Dundee is on Dundee's waterfront at 1 Riverside Esplanade, DD1 4EZ,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG9044 - Pigeon racing is the sport of releasing specially trained homing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance. The time it takes the animal to cover the specified distance is measured and the bird's rate of travel is calculated and compared with all of the other pigeons in the race to determine which animal returned at the highest speed.
Pigeon racing requires a specific breed of pigeon bred for the sport, the Racing Homer. Competing pigeons are specially trained and conditioned for races that vary in distance from approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). Despite these lengths, races can be won and lost by seconds, so many different timing and measuring devices have been developed. The traditional timing method involves rubber rings being placed into a specially designed clock, whereas a newer development uses RFID tags to record arrival time.
While there is no definite proof, there are compelling reasons to think the sport of racing pigeons may go back at least as far as 220 AD. Furthermore, it is recorded in the Mishnah that pigeon racers are forbidden from bearing witness. The sport achieved a great deal of popularity in Belgium in the mid-19th century. The pigeon fanciers of Belgium were so taken with the hobby that they began to develop pigeons specially cultivated for fast flight and long endurance called Voyageurs. From Belgium the modern version of the sport and the Voyageurs which the Flemish fanciers developed spread to most parts of the world. Once quite popular, the sport has experienced a downturn in participants in some parts of the world in recent years, possibly due to the rising cost of living, ageing fanciers, and a severe lack of public interest. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by pigeons is also a reason why some people are leaving the sport.
One recent development in the sport of pigeon racing is one loft racing, where birds are raced against each other under the same training

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YFD - View looking east along the River Irwell in Manchester city centre, showing the Novella apartment buildings and Aviva Studios, the home of Factory International. This stretch of river marks the historic boundary between Manchester and Salford and has become a focal point for large-scale regeneration and high-density urban development.
The Novella residential towers form part of a wave of new riverside housing, reflecting Manchester's rapid growth as a city for urban living, inward investment, and city-centre population expansion. The buildings' contemporary design and height contribute to a changing skyline dominated by modern apartment blocks and mixed-use developments.
To the right of the frame stands Aviva Studios, a landmark cultural venue designed to host large-scale performance, exhibitions, and live events. The building anchors the St John's regeneration area, a former industrial and broadcasting district that once housed Granada Television and associated studios.
Construction cranes and newly completed towers underline the pace of transformation along the River Irwell corridor, where former warehouses and brownfield sites have been replaced by residential, commercial, and cultural infrastructure. Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, the image documents the continuing reshaping of Manchester as a post-industrial city driven by culture-led regeneration, high-rise living, and riverside redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ39R - The Big Fish is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness. The 10-metre-long (33 ft) statue was constructed in 1999 and installed on Donegall Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House. Also known as Pat The Fish in reference to visitors from Orkney, Scotland patting the fish for good luck.
The Big Fish's image appears on tourism material related to Belfast and Northern Ireland.
Construction - The outer skin of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. According to the Belfast City Council, each scale tells a story about the city. Material from Tudor times to present day newspaper headlines are included along with contributions from Belfast school children (including a soldier and an Ulster Fry). The Ulster Museum provided the primary source of historic images, while local schools/day centres located along the line of the River Farset were approached to provide drawings for the fish. Images were provided by Glenwood Primary School, St Comgalls and Everton Day Centres.
The Big Fish contains a time capsule storing information, images, and poetry on the city

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KW2 - The MV Royal Iris of the Mersey is a Mersey Ferry in operation on the River Mersey, England. From launch in Devon in 1959 until a major refurbishment in 2001, she was named MV Mountwood.
MV Mountwood
The Mountwood was the slightly older sister ship of the MV Woodchurch. Both of the ferries were built for the Corporation of Birkenhead to replace the existing fleet of 1930s steamers. The designs of the two new vessels were loosely based on the ferries Leasowe and Egremont of the Wallasey Corporation
they were designed by the same company, Graham and Woolnough, and were built at the same shipyard, Messrs. Philip and Sons Ltd. of Dartmouth. Mountwood was launched by Mrs Hugh Platt on 6 July 1959 into the River Dart, and after being fitted out was delivered to the Mersey in 1960. She was named after an overspill post-war housing development of Birkenhead.
The Mountwood and her identical sister Woodchurch originally had bright orange funnels with a black base and black soot buffer. On the main deck, there was a forward, heated shelter and also a main saloon, aft of this was the toilets and machine space. Below was a saloon bar. On the top deck was a large open promenade and a forward shelter beneath the bridge, although this shelter was open beneath the bridge so it was often breezy and cold. They had a main central wheelhouse and two side cabs, and power came from two medium speed Crossley 8-cylinder diesel engines.
In 2001, the Mountwood was withdrawn and taken to Birkenhead's former Cammell Laird shipyard (which became owned by A&P), and then to Clarence graving docks, where she was stripped of her fittings and parts of her superstructure were removed and rebuilt. Unfortunately the ferry remained dormant for some time due to problems at the shipyard. She was then re-engined and rebuilt. Noticeable changes were the addition of a new, angle fronted, large wheelhouse and bridge deck, plus her funnel, which was reinstated after the refit, was moved further back

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XGA - Canary Wharf is an area of London, England, located near the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Canary Wharf is defined by the Greater London Authority as being part of London's central business district, alongside Central London.[1] With the City of London, it constitutes one of the main financial centres in the United Kingdom and the world, containing many high-rise buildings including the third-tallest in the UK, One Canada Square, which opened on 26 August 1991.
Developed on the site of the former West India Docks, Canary Wharf contains around 16,000,000 sq ft (1,500,000 m2) of office and retail space. It has many open areas, including Canada Square, Cabot Square and Westferry Circus. Together with Heron Quays and Wood Wharf, it forms the Canary Wharf Estate, around 97 acres (39 ha) in area.
Canary Wharf is located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs.
In October 1995, an international consortium that included investors such as Alwaleed, bought control for $1.2 billion. Paul Reichmann, of Olympia & York, was named chairman, and Canary Wharf went public in 1999. The new company was called Canary Wharf Limited, and later became Canary Wharf Group.
In 1997, some residents living on the Isle of Dogs launched a lawsuit against Canary Wharf Ltd for private nuisance because the tower interfered with TV signals. The residents lost the case.
Recovery in the property market generally, coupled with continuing demand for large floorplate Grade A office space, slowly improved the level of interest. A critical event in the recovery was the much-delayed start of work on the Jubilee Line Extension, which the government wanted ready for the Millennium celebrations.
In March 2004, Canary Wharf Group plc. was taken over by a consortium of investors, backed by its largest shareholder Glick Family Investments and led by Morgan Stanley using a vehicle named Songbird Estates plc.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDNK - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDTB - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
Construction of Belfast, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and, in spite of fears that she would be scrapped, spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945, she was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 195052 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before she entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence was established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, however, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDXY - This image shows a Thames RIB speedboat travelling along the River Thames as it passes the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, South East London. The fast-moving rigid inflatable boat carries passengers on a sightseeing or leisure trip, creating a visible wake on the river as it moves through one of London's most historically significant riverside settings.
The National Maritime Museum forms part of Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its concentration of historic buildings linked to Britain's naval and seafaring past. The grand classical facades visible along the riverbank provide a striking architectural backdrop, contrasting with the modern, high-speed leisure craft in the foreground.
River-based tourism has become an increasingly popular way to experience London, offering views of major landmarks from the water while also highlighting the Thames as a working and recreational river. The image captures this blend of heritage and contemporary leisure, with historic institutions framing modern river activity.
Photographed in daylight under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London tourism, river transport, leisure boating, historic landmarks, maritime heritage, and the continuing role of the River Thames in city life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE1G - This image shows a wide view across the River Thames from Greenwich in South East London, looking toward the O2 Arena at North Greenwich and the modern skyline of Canary Wharf beyond. The distinctive white dome of the O2, originally built as the Millennium Dome, is visible alongside the cluster of high-rise office towers that define London's Docklands financial district.
In the foreground, boats travel along the River Thames, emphasising the river's continued role as a working transport corridor as well as a visual and recreational feature of the city. The movement of vessels contrasts with the static skyline, highlighting different layers of London's urban life.
The scene illustrates the dramatic transformation of East London since the late 20th century, where former docklands and industrial areas have been redeveloped into major commercial, entertainment, and residential districts. Viewed from Greenwich, an area rich in maritime heritage, the modern architecture across the river underscores the city's constant evolution.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London cityscapes, urban regeneration, riverside development, transport, travel, and the juxtaposition of historic and contemporary London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHNGM2 - Bacharach (also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle.
Today Bacharach thrives on tourism and wine from Bacharach is still enjoying international popularity. Not to be overlooked, however, are problems arising from a shrinking population, itself brought about by a lack of prospects.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHNGMD - Bacharach (also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNDXA - The Royal Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world. It was known simply as the Albert Dock until 2018, when it was granted a royal charter and had the honorific Royal added to its name.
At the time of its construction the dock was considered to be revolutionary in its design because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from or to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite its advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that, within 50 years, larger and more open docks were required, although the Albert Dock remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for ships of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Royal Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNE19 - A love lock or love padlock is a padlock that significant other pairs lock to a bridge, fence, gate, monument, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials, and perhaps the date, are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away (often into a nearby river) to symbolize unbreakable love.
Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They are treated by some municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and there is some cost to their removal. However, there are other authorities who embrace them, and who use them as fundraising projects or tourist attractions.
Love locks are a symbol of everlasting love, a sign of an unbreakable bond and a beautifully significant moment you can share with someone.
The love locks of Liverpool are used by people from all over the world to show their unbreakable love. These locks can be found along the River Mersey, decorating chains along the river with symbols of love.
Many of them have been inscribed with messages and as you walk along, you notice beautiful and intricate padlock designs along with the different dates such as when couples met, were engaged and married.
The actual tradition is believed to have started over 100 years ago during the first world war. Women would write the names of their loved ones on a padlock in the hope it would protect them whilst they were away fighting. The symbols of love have actually developed from heart rendering moments of not knowing if you would ever see your loved one again.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P08KF3 - Liverpool pilot cutter number 2, 1953
The largest object in National Museums Liverpool's collections is the Edmund Gardner, a former pilot cutter that can now be found in dry dock opposite the Maritime Museum.
Strong currents, shifting sandbanks, rocks, dangerous weather and two tides a day - with a difference of 11 metres - make the approach to Liverpool by ship a risky business. Marine pilots are seafarers with local knowledge of the River Mersey, who guide ships safely through these various hazards.
The object of a pilot today is the same as it was back in 1766 to get a ship, its crew and its cargo safely into port in a timely manner - Geoff Topp, Liverpool Pilot, 1967-2002
During her working life of almost 30 years the Edmund Gardner was essentially a base out in the Irish Sea for the Pilotage Service, providing accommodation for up to 32 pilots at a time. The pilots met all shipping approaching the Mersey and guided them into and out of the docks, to ensure their safety.
The Edmund Gardner's historic importance has been recognized by the National Historic Ships Committee, which has included the vessel in its National Core Collection of Historic Ships. She has also received the World Ship Trust's award as an outstanding example of ship preservation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JGNG - The Port of Liverpool Building (formerly Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Offices, more commonly known as the Dock Office) is a Grade II* listed building in Liverpool, England. It is located at the Pier Head and, along with the neighbouring Royal Liver Building and Cunard Building, is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront.[1] It is also part of Liverpool's formerly UNESCO-designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City.
The building was designed by Sir Arnold Thornely and F.B. Hobbs and was developed in collaboration with Briggs and Wolstenholme. It was constructed between 1904 and 1907, with a reinforced concrete frame that is clad in Portland Stone. The building was the headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) for 87 years, from 1907 to 1994, when the company relocated to new premises at Seaforth Dock. In 2001 it was sold to Downing, a Liverpool-based property developer, and between 2006 and 2009 underwent a major £10m restoration that restored many original features of the building.[2][3]
The Port of Liverpool Building is in the Edwardian Baroque style and is noted for the large dome that sits atop it, acting as the focal point of the building. It is approximately rectangular in shape with canted corners that are topped with stone cupolas. At 220 feet (67 m) the building was the tallest building in Liverpool when built, and as of 2022 is the fourteenth tallest. Like the neighbouring Cunard Building, it is noted for the ornamental detail both on the inside and out, and in particular for the many maritime references and expensive decorative furnishings.

It is located at the Pier Head and along with the neighbouring Royal Liver Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront. It is also part of Liverpool's former UNESCO designated World Heritage, the Maritime Mercantile City.
It was designed by William Edward Willink and Philip Coldwell Thicknesse and was constructed between 1914 and 1917. The building's style is a mix of Italian Renaissance and Greek Revival, and its development has been particularly influenced by Italian palace design. The building is noted for the ornate sculptures that adorn its sides.
The Royal Liver Building /ˈlaɪvər/ is a Grade I listed building in Liverpool, England. It is located at the Pier Head and along with the neighbouring Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront. It was also part of Liverpool's formerly UNESCO-designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City.
Opened in 1911, the building was the purpose-built home of the Royal Liver Assurance group, which had been set up in the city in 1850 to provide locals with assistance related to losing a wage-earning relative. One of the first buildings in the world to be built using reinforced concrete, the Royal Liver Building stands at 98.2 m (322 ft) tall to the top of the spires, 103.7 metres (340feet) to the top of the birds and 50.9 m (167 ft) to the main roof.
The Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool with its two fabled Liver Birds which watch over the city and the sea. Legend has it that if these two birds were to fly away, the city would cease to exist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X5A - This image shows a Royd Ices ice cream van parked beside the River Ouse in York, offering hard and soft ice cream including the traditional 99 Flake made with a Cadbury chocolate flake. The brightly decorated van reflects a long-standing British street-food tradition associated with summer, leisure, and tourism.
Royd Ices is a well-known York-based family business established in 1889, making it one of the oldest ice-cream makers in the region. The company has become part of the city's everyday cultural landscape, particularly along the riverside where residents and visitors gather during warmer months.
The 99 Flake is an iconic British ice-cream format, typically consisting of soft-serve ice cream served in a cone with a Cadbury Flake, and remains closely associated with nostalgia, seaside and riverside treats, and childhood memories.
With historic buildings and the river in the background, the image captures the intersection of local food heritage, tourism, and everyday city life in York. It is well suited for editorial use covering British food culture, traditional street vending, regional heritage brands, summer leisure, and historic city settings.

The fountain was influenced by the Trevi Fountain in Rome and shows Neptune, the Rome god of water, holding a trident as a symbol of his power over the sea. The figure of Neptune was based on local labourer Dick Saunders. The fountain is symbolic of the importance of water in the development of the town of Cheltenham. The fountain draws water from the River Chelt which flows below the fountain through a large culvert.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3JX8R - John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England, produces beers including John Smith's, the highest selling bitter in the United Kingdom since the mid-1990s.
The majority of John Smith's sales are of the nitrogenated Extra Smooth product, although a cask conditioned variant is available nationally. A stronger variant called Magnet is also available in the North East of England. John Smith's Cask and Magnet are produced under licence by Cameron's in Hartlepool.
John Smith acquired the Backhouse & Hartley brewery in 1852. Following a series of acquisitions in the post-World War II period, the company became one of the largest regional brewers in the country, operating over 1,800 licensed premises. The company was taken over by Courage in 1970 who extended distribution of the brewery's products into the South of England. Courage was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle in 1995, and the operations were purchased by Heineken in 2008.
John Smith's Extra Smooth and Original are produced at the Tadcaster brewery, as well as a range of Heineken products including Amstel and Kronenbourg 1664. With a 38 million litre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country.
John Smith's became well known for a series of highly successful No Nonsense-themed television advertising campaigns, featuring the dour Yorkshireman character Arkwright during the 1970s and 1980s (shown only in the South of England), followed by the comedians Jack Dee during the 1990s and Peter Kay since 2002. The brand also has an association with horse racing: it was the principal sponsor of the Grand National between 2005 and 2013, the Northumberland Plate from 2003 until 2016, and has sponsored the John Smith's Cup since 1960.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXE2 - This image shows Whitby Harbour in North Yorkshire during the summer months, with fishing boats, leisure craft, and historic-style sailing vessels moored along the quayside. The harbour is surrounded by tightly packed red-roofed houses and historic waterfront buildings that rise up the hillside, giving Whitby its distinctive coastal townscape.
The scene reflects Whitby's dual role as both a working harbour and a major tourist destination on the Yorkshire coast. Fishing vessels, charter boats, and visitor attractions share the waterfront, while people move along the quayside enjoying the harbour views during the holiday season.
Taken in daylight under lightly overcast summer skies, the image captures the busy but relaxed atmosphere typical of Whitby in peak season. The harbour has long been central to the town's economy and identity, historically supporting fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime trade, and today playing a key role in tourism.
The photograph illustrates the enduring appeal of Whitby Harbour as a focal point of coastal heritage, maritime activity, and summer tourism in northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXGX - The Port of Whitby is an ancient and historic seaport on the North Yorkshire coast of England. The port lies at the mouth of the River Esk, where it enters into the North Sea. A port has been in existence at Whitby since at least the 7th century, when it was used to bring in supplies for Whitby Abbey. The port is famous for being the port of origin for the sailings of Captain Cook, and some of the ships that he sailed on were also built in the harbour.
Commercial cargo ceased in the late 20th century, however, the port is still an important location for the landing of fish.
Fish were being landed at Whitby during the time that the first abbey had been built in 657
The port was never equal to other ports in the area such as Hull or Middlesbrough. This is due to the hinterland that surrounded the port, with Whitby being largely cut-off from overland travel until the 18th and 19th centuries, it had no great industries to export or import for, being surrounded on all sides of the river by moorland (except for the coast to the north). Trade through the port accelerated with the coming of the railways, but its main function was either as a shelter for ships from storms in the North Sea, or as a re-supply point. Between 1702 and 1704, the number of collier ships alone totalled 98, Bridlington, Hull and Scarborough only hosted 48, 28 and 54 respectively. The safe haven almost guaranteed at Whitby (and at Scarborough and Bridlington too), allowed the port to charge a levy towards the upkeep of the harbour and piers. The levy also applied to passing trade of coal from many north-eastern locations, with the levy not being rescinded until 1861
A survey in the 1950s determined that the port at Whitby was not as successful as other neighbouring cargo ports such as Hull, Teesside and West Hartlepool, on account of its lack of urban sprawl, and the absence of warehouses on the dock side with which to store goods in a safe manner before onward export, or inward transportation.

Victoria Bridge was built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria ascended the throne, hence the name. This new bridge replaced an old and narrow hump-backed pack-saddle one. Indeed, the original line of the road that led over the bridge, down Smithy Fold, and along Ellison Street is traceable, and is preserved particularly in the buildings of the Brook Tavern, Cafeteria, Glossop Pizza, Balti Palace (all built in 1832).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M60 - ICI River Trade
When Ludwig Mond and John Brunner established their chemical works at Winnington in 1873, a new chapter in both the history of Northwich and the River Navigation was about to be written.
The company grew steadily over the next 50 years and in 1924 acquired the Magadi Soda Company of Kenya.
In 1926, Brunner Mond merged with three other British chemical companies to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), a venture that grew to become one of the world's largest and most successful companies.
In 1991 Brunner Mond was re-created as an independent company by the acquisition of the UK and Kenyan soda ash businesses from ICI.
This Chapter of history continues to this day and the chemical empire is now owned by Tata Chemicals Europe.
ICI's works at Winnington, on the River Weaver, receives its limestone by rail from Derbyshire but for many years used coasters to export its finished product.
Sadly, commercial traffic - thanks to the articulated lorry - has now left the Weaver Navigation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M6C - Mossdale was built in 1876 by the Shropshire Union Railway & Canal Company, Chester. She is a Mersey Flat and was towed by horses or tugs. Her hull was carvel construction of oak, elm and pitch pine and she traded between Ellesmere Port and Liverpool. Originally known as RUBY, she was renamed MOSSDALE when bought by Abel & Son of Runcorn in the 1930s. They extensively rebuilt and deepened her to obtain maximum load for minimum displacement. She was found abandoned at Ellesmere Port in 1970 and is now preserved on shore at the Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port.
Mossdale's fabric is representative of a typical wooden Mersey flat, being built of oak frames on pitch pine planking doubled where necessary to achieve her shape. Her large foredeck windlass fitted her to work in the tidal Mersey, with a smaller windlass used when warping her into docks. In 1933, Mossdale underwent a major re-build which included lengthening her to 72 feet. Her increased length represents an important period in her working life, marking the development in trade caused by the industrial revolution and the need for her to carry a greater cargo to pay her way. With no means of propulsion, she would generally have been towed by a horse or tug.
Mossdale was never rigged as a sailing flat, but is a good example of a regional river barge from North-West England. She has a substantial rudder, a typical flat bottom, a round bilge and bluff square bows.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRAHP8 - Sewage treatment (or domestic wastewater treatment, municipal wastewater treatment) is a type of wastewater treatment which aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable to discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application, thereby preventing water pollution from raw sewage discharges. Sewage contains wastewater from households and businesses and possibly pre-treated industrial wastewater. There are a high number of sewage treatment processes to choose from. These can range from decentralized systems (including on-site treatment systems) to large centralized systems involving a network of pipes and pump stations (called sewerage) which convey the sewage to a treatment plant. For cities that have a combined sewer, the sewers will also carry urban runoff (stormwater) to the sewage treatment plant. Sewage treatment often involves two main stages, called primary and secondary treatment, while advanced treatment also incorporates a tertiary treatment stage with polishing processes and nutrient removal. Secondary treatment can reduce organic matter (measured as biological oxygen demand) from sewage, using aerobic or anaerobic biological processes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FNX - The River Dee (Welsh: Afon Dyfrdwy, Latin: Deva Fluvius) is a river in the United Kingdom. It flows through parts of both Wales and England, forming part of the border between the two countries.
The river rises in Snowdonia, Wales, flows east via Chester, England, and discharges to the sea in an estuary between Wales and the Wirral Peninsula in England. It has a total length of 113 km (70 miles).
History
The River Dee was the traditional boundary of the Kingdom of Gwynedd in Wales for centuries, possibly since its founding in the 5th century. It was recorded in the 13th century (in mainstream Middle English orthography, lacking the letters v and w) as flumen Dubr Duiu
the name appears to derive from the Brythonic dēvā: River of the Goddess or Holy River. The river is personified as the war and fate goddess Aerfen.
The river name inspired the name of Roman fortress Deva Victrix.
It is the only river in the UK to be subject to a Water Protection Zone along its whole length down to Chester weir

Queen of Mercia
This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been, i.e. in the direction of the railway bridge.
Designed and made by sculptor Phil Bewes who now works with his partner Diane Gorvin. They did other work in the Runcorn area in the 1980's, especially at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. They are now based in the Forest of Dean area. They have a lovely website at www.bewsgorvin.co.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K13HFK - The Silver Jubilee Bridge (originally the RuncornWidnes Bridge or informally the Runcorn Bridge) crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn Gap between Runcorn and Widnes in Halton, England. It is a through arch bridge with a main arch span of 361 yards (330 m). It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge. In 197577 the carriageway was widened, after which the bridge was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway.
design was for a steel through arch bridge with a 10-yard (9 m) single carriageway. The design of the bridge is similar to that of Sydney Harbour Bridge but differs from it in that the side spans are continuous with the main span rather than being separate from them. This design feature was necessary to avoid the problem of oscillation due to the railway bridge. The main span measures 361 yards (330 m) and each side span is 83 yards (76 m)
Construction began on 25 April 1956. The contractors for the first phase of work, Leonard Fairclough of Adlington, cleared the ground and constructed the foundations for the piers. The contract for the second phase, the building of the main arch and the side arches, was given to Dorman Long of Middlesbrough who sub-contracted the building of the bridge deck, viaduct and roadworks to Leonard Fairclough. The carriageway was suspended from the arch by 48 lock-coil wire ropes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9H1A3 - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England
The EA provides Flood and coastal risk management, Activities to reduce likelihood of flooding
Activities to reduce consequences of flooding, Environment and business, Climate change, Air quality, Land quality, Water quality, Water resources, Fishing, Navigation, Other marine responsibilities, Equipment and Fleet, Consultation and influencing, Advice to Government, Regional organisation
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters. In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive. There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.
The remaining directorates are central shared service groups

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E423DT - A Woodside Ferry destination sign is shown on the upper deck of a historic electric tram from the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway in Birkenhead. The close-up view captures the traditional tram destination box, curved balcony railings, cream and green livery and period styling associated with preserved tramway vehicles. Woodside Ferry is a key Mersey waterfront location in Birkenhead, linked with ferry services across the River Mersey and with the town's transport history. The heritage tramway connected Wirral Transport Museum with Woodside Ferry Terminal, giving visitors a short preserved tram ride between the museum, the waterfront and nearby bus and ferry interchange. The image is commercially useful for stories about tram preservation, electric trams, public transport heritage, Merseyside transport, Wirral tourism, Woodside Ferry, Birkenhead regeneration, local museums and the survival of historic urban transport. It can also illustrate the wider history of electric street tramways in Britain, including the way local authority tram systems once served working towns, ferry terminals, docks, shopping streets and residential districts before buses and private cars changed urban travel. The visible destination sign makes the photograph especially relevant for articles on route displays, tramway design, transport signage, preserved vehicles, museum collections and the nostalgia attached to historic public transport. Care is needed with current wording, as the Wirral Transport Museum and tramway have had periods of closure and uncertainty, with plans and funding discussions around reopening and redevelopment reported in recent years. As a documentary stock image, it records a distinctive detail of Birkenhead's tramway heritage, where the Woodside Ferry name, tram balcony and vintage styling combine to evoke ferry passengers, electric traction, museum volunteers and the wider transport memory of the Wirral waterfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E423NX - Wallasey Corporation Tramways No. 78 stands at Woodside in Birkenhead, displaying destination blinds for Seacombe, Warren Drive and New Brighton on a preserved heritage electric tram. The cream and green double deck tram, with open balcony and period livery, is one of the best-known vehicles associated with the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway. The Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society says car 78 was built as late as 1920 by Brush, but in an old-fashioned design with open upper-deck balconies, and that it was the final tram to survive from Wallasey Corporation Tramways after withdrawal in 1933. Visit Wirral lists the Wirral Tramway and Wirral Transport Museum at 1 Taylor Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1BG, where heritage trams operated to Woodside Ferry. The image is commercially useful for stories about preserved trams, electric tramway heritage, Birkenhead transport history, Wirral tourism, museum volunteers, public transport nostalgia, Woodside Ferry and the wider history of urban transit on Merseyside. It can also illustrate the once-important links between ferry terminals, coastal suburbs and local authority tram systems, with New Brighton, Seacombe and Woodside all part of the historic transport geography of the Wirral. The distinctive destination blinds, polished paintwork, open platform and classic Edwardian-style design make the photograph especially strong for transport, heritage and leisure features. It is also useful for coverage of transport museums, family attractions, volunteer restoration work, route branding, destination displays and the visual appeal of traditional tram design. As a documentary stock image, it records a much-loved preserved tram at Woodside, evoking the era when trams carried passengers between Birkenhead, Wallasey and the seaside at New Brighton, and highlighting the role of preservation groups in keeping that history visible.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PG69H6 - Bridgwater is a large historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England. Its population currently stands at around 35,886 as of 2011. Bridgwater is at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in level and well-wooded country. The town lies along both sides of the River Parrett, and has been a major in-land port and trading centre since the industrial revolution. Most of its industrial bases still stand today. Its larger neighbour Taunton, is linked to Bridgwater via a canal, the M5 motorway and the GWR railway line.
Historically, the town had a politically radical tendency. The Battle of Sedgemoor, where the Monmouth Rebellion was finally crushed in 1685, was fought nearby. Notable buildings include the Church of St Mary and the house in Blake Street, largely restored, which was the birthplace of Admiral Blake in 1598, and is now the Blake Museum. The town has an arts centre and plays host to the annual Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J4G - The River Parrett flows through the counties of Dorset and Somerset in South West England, from its source in the Thorney Mills springs in the hills around Chedington in Dorset. Flowing northwest through Somerset and the Somerset Levels to its mouth at Burnham-on-Sea, into the Bridgwater Bay nature reserve on the Bristol Channel, the Parrett and its tributaries drain an area of 660 square miles (1,700 km2) about 50 per cent of Somerset's land area, with a population of 300,000.
The Parrett's main tributaries include the Rivers Tone, Isle, and Yeo, and the River Cary via the King's Sedgemoor Drain. The 37-mile (60 km) long river is tidal for 19 miles (31 km) up to Oath. The fall of the river between Langport and Bridgwater is only 1 foot per mile (0.2 m/km), so it is prone to frequent flooding in winter and during high tides. Many approaches have been tried since at least the medieval period to reduce the incidence and effect of floods and to drain the surrounding fields.
In Anglo-Saxon times the river formed a boundary between Wessex and Dumnonia. It later served the Port of Bridgwater, and enabled cargoes to be transported inland. The arrival of the railways led to a decline in commercial shipping, and the only working docks are at Dunball. Man's influence on the river has left a legacy of bridges and industrial artefacts. The Parrett along with its connected waterways and network of drains supports an ecosystem that includes several rare species of flora and fauna. The River Parrett Trail has been established along the banks of the river.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTACN - The Warrington Transporter Bridge (or Bank Quay Transporter Bridge) across the River Mersey is a structural steel transporter bridge. The bridge has a span of 200 ft (61 m), is 30 ft (9.1 m) wide, 76 ft (23 m) feet above high water level, with an overall length of 339 ft (103 m) feet and a total height of 89 ft (27 m). It was constructed in 1915 and fell into disuse in approximately 1964. It was designed by William Henry Hunter and built by Sir William Arrol & Co.
It was the second of two transporter bridges across the Mersey at Warrington. The first was erected in 1905 slightly to the north of the existing bridge, and was described in The Engineer in 1908. A third transporter bridge over the Mersey was the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, built in 1905 and dismantled in 1961.
The Warrington Transporter Bridge was constructed to connect the two parts of the large chemical and soap works of Joseph Crosfield and Sons. It was originally designed to carry rail vehicles up to 18 long tons (18 tonnes) in weight, and was converted for road vehicles in 1940. In 1953 it was further modified to carry loads of up to 30 long tons (30 tonnes).
The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and because of its poor condition it is on the Heritage at Risk Register. The bridge is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A local group called 'Friends of Warrington Transporter Bridge' (FoWTB) was formed in April 2015 to act as the independent voice of the bridge. The group is liaising with other interest groups to safeguard the future of the bridge and its industrial heritage status. FoWTB have been featured on the local BBC News programme North West Tonight and have set up a website for the bridge along with Facebook and Twitter pages. In 2016, the bridge was nominated for the Institution of Civil Engineers North West Heritage Award.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H552FP - Southwark Cathedral or The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, Southwark, London, lies on the south bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge. It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark. It has been a place of Christian worship for more than 1,000 years, but a cathedral only since the creation of the diocese of Southwark in 1905.
Between 1106 and 1538 it was the church of an Augustinian priory, Southwark Priory, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, it became a parish church, with the new dedication of St Saviour's. The church was in the diocese of Winchester until 1877, when the parish of St Saviour's, along with other South London parishes, was transferred to the diocese of Rochester. The present building retains the basic form of the Gothic structure built between 1220 and 1420, although the nave is a late 19th-century reconstruction.
There is a large stained glass window dedicated to William Shakespeare, depicting scenes from his plays, at the base of which is an alabaster statue representing the playwright reclining, holding a quill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ798E - The River Tib is a minor tributary of the River Medlock in Manchester, England. It has been culverted along its entire length since probably about 1820 and now runs beneath Manchester city centre. Tib Street (53°2901N 2°1405WCoordinates: 53°2901N 2°1405W) and Tib Lane are named after the watercourse.
During the Roman period, the Tib marked the boundary of the vicus or settlement of Mamucium
the river continued to mark Manchester's boundary until medieval times, as well as providing drinking water. A notion concerning The Tib's name, coined by Geoffrey Ashworth in his book The Lost Rivers of Manchester, is that the river was given its name by homesick Roman soldiers after the River Tiber, but with the word shortened to reflect the size difference between the two rivers. Alternatively, the name may derive from the Celtic word for watercourse.
The river's source is a spring in Miles Platting (53°2936N 2°1308W), from where it flows underneath Oldham Road and the eponymous Tib Street to reach the city centre. After flowing underneath West Mosley Street, the Tib crosses Princess Street to flow underneath the Manchester Town Hall extension, the Central Library and the Midland Hotel's dining room, before joining the Medlock at Gaythorn (now First Street, 53°2823N 2°1452W), close to Deansgate railway station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE01 - Designed to provide the best of the land on the water the yacht-houses are modelled on modern streamline motor yachts yet appointed to allow high ceilings, excellent natural light, picture windows on the upper floor and wrap around windows on the lower floor.
From their secure residential moorings, they afford excellent views up and down the river with minimal windows on the side to allow almost complete privacy. Lighting is enhanced by shards of roof window that allow daylight along the sides. This, the middle of the three vessels, is also air conditioned and designed to compliment their unique setting. The superb Kingston town centre is a short walk away and Hampton Wick (over ground) is the closest station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWG0 - Tower Bridge is a bridge in London. It crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. The north side of the bridge is Tower Hill, and the south side of the bridge comes down into Bermondsey, robbie, an area in Southwark. It is far more visible than London Bridge, which people often mistake it for. If large boats need to sail under Tower Bridge, the two halves of the bridge lift up to let it under. Many tourists go to London to see the Tower Bridge.
When it was first built, Tower Bridge was the bridge. Bascule is the French word for a see-saw. The bascules are the surfaces raised to allow tall ships to pass through: this happens about 900 times per year. The bridge's deck can be raised to 83deg from the horizontal. Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous sights.
The City of London Corporation held a competition for the design in 1876. Over 50 designs were entered, and in 1884 Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry's design was chosen.
Workers began to build the Tower Bridge in April 1886 and the bridge was opened in 30 June 1894.
In June 2012, the bridge was highlighted on the route of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KDF - This image shows a dramatic sunset over the former ICI chemical works at Northwich in Cheshire, with the silhouetted industrial buildings reflected in the calm waters of the River Weaver. The rich colours of the evening sky contrast sharply with the dark outline of the redundant factory structures, creating a powerful visual record of Britain's industrial past.
Northwich was a major centre of the chemical industry throughout the twentieth century, closely linked to salt extraction and chemical production along the River Weaver. The site was operated for many years by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), one of Britain's most important industrial companies, before large-scale closures and restructuring led to the end of production.
The buildings visible in the image represent a period when heavy industry dominated the landscape and local economy, shaping employment, housing, and infrastructure across the town. Since closure, the area has become part of wider discussions around industrial decline, environmental impact, land remediation, and regeneration in post-industrial northern England.
Photographed at sunset, the still water and reflections add a contemplative quality, emphasising themes of transition, memory, and change. The image is well suited for editorial use covering British industrial heritage, post-industrial landscapes, environmental history, and the visual legacy of chemical manufacturing in the UK.

Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the UK Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities.
Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University. Newcastle is member of the North of Tyne Combined Authority.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1F0 - The Tyne Bridge is a through arch bridge over the River Tyne in North East England, linking Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. The bridge was designed by the engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson, who later designed the Forth Road Bridge, and was built by Dorman Long and Co. of Middlesbrough. The bridge was officially opened on 10 October 1928 by King George V and has since become a defining symbol of Tyneside. It is ranked as the tenth tallest structure in the city.
The Tyne Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson, comparable to their Sydney Harbour Bridge version
The bridge was completed on 25 February 1928, and officially opened on 10 October by King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first to use the roadway, travelling in their Ascot Landau. The opening ceremony was attended by 20,000 schoolchildren who had been given the day off. Movietone news recorded the speech given by the King
The Tyne Bridge's towers were built of Cornish granite and were designed by local architect Robert Burns Dick as warehouses with five storeys. But, the inner floors of the warehouses in the bridge's towers were not completed and, as a result, the storage areas were never used. Lifts for passengers and goods were built in the towers to provide access to the Quayside
they are no longer in use.
The bridge's design uses a parabolic arch.
The bridge was originally painted green with special paint made by J. Dampney Co. of Gateshead. The same colours were used to paint the bridge in 2000

I was a late convert to the value of disco, but this must be a certain classic.
Kool &
the Gang are an American jazz, R&
B, soul, funk and disco group, originally formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1964. They went through several musical phases during the course of their recording career, starting out with a purist jazz sound, then becoming practitioners of R&
B and funk, progressing to a smooth pop-funk ensemble, and in the post-millennium creating music with a modern, electro-pop sound.
The late 1970s saw a lull in Kool &
the Gang's except for the album 'Open Sesame' which yielded the title track 'Open Sesame' which achieved some success in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. T
hen came new lead singer James 'J.T.' Taylor who joined the group \u2014 with this track from 1979, Ladies' Night. Their number one hit in 1980's 'Celebration', from Celebrate!, co-produced by Eumir Deodato. More international hits followed in the early 1980s, including 'Big Fun', 'Get Down on It', and 'Joanna'. Their 1984 album Emergency yielded four top-20 pop hits, including 'Fresh' and 'Cherish'. Their chart presence stopped after Forever. Taylor left the group amicably to pursue a solo career.
In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, town is pronounced \u2018toon\u2019, and going out is \u2018gannin oot\u2019. Hen and stag nights are big business if \u2018yous lot is aal gannin out on the toon!\u2019.
A whole industry has sprung up supporting male strippers, burlesque hen night dance party experiences, casino meals and MTV babes (allegedly..).
Walking around toon on a Saturday night you can see where some of Chris Donald's Viz characters came from. Buster Gonad, The Fat Slags, Sid The Sexist and Brown Bottle are there to be found only a 15 minute walk away from the Quayside. Still, its all a bit of laugh, ,just watch those jelly (jello if you are from the other side of the pond) vodka shots!
Here, the group pose against the Newcastle Millenium bridge, a rare tilting example.

'First I want a kiss, then I want it all......'
Well its been a few weeks in arriving, but seminal Scousers Echo and the Bunnymen have finally arrived on my iPod.
Echo was the name given to the bands original drum machine (in legend, although maybe not in fact), that backed up Ian McCulloch (vox), Will Sergeant (guitar) and Les Pattinson (Bass). By 1980 a permanent drummer, Pete de Freitas was installed. He was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
Ian McCulloch back in 1977 was one third of the 'Crucial Three', a bedroom band which also featured Julian Cope (Teardrop Explodes) and Pete Wylie (Wah Heat).
I have the first single (from Bill Drummond and David Balfe's Zoo label) 'The Pictures On My Wall' (b-sided with 'Read It In Books') with 'The Revenge Of Voodoo Billy' scratched in the run out groove, up in my loft. Its pretty much played to death. I think I bought it at 'Probe' the original record shop that was up in what is now known as Cavern walks in Liverpool. It stocked all the indie vinyl and sold tickets to Erics, the local punk band venue. Echo &
the Bunnymen made their debut at Liverpool's Eric's Club in November 1978.
The band were influenced by the same artists as their other North West contemporaries Joy Division, The Doors and Velvet underground. Like them, they often play Doors covers live.
For the ultimate resource on the band, checkout www.villiersterrace.com , to get a feel for the band, checkout the live album 'Never Stop: Live in Liverpool'.

The RAF Search and Rescue Force (SARF or SAR Force) is the Royal Air Force organization which provides around-the-clock aeronautical search and rescue cover in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands.
Although established with a primary role of military search and rescue, most of SARF's operational missions are spent in its secondary role, conducting civil search and rescue. This entails the rescue of civilians from the sea, on mountains, from flooded regions or other locations on land.
The aeronautical search and rescue roles are complemented by the related Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service whose trained mountaineers also conduct search and rescue in hilly terrain. SARF helicopters and RAF mountaineers often work together on mountain rescue incidents.
The SAR Force headquarters is situated at RAF Valley on Anglesey, North Wales and this helicopter is probably from 'C Flight' based there.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4660949290 - 'West Kirby contains a large man made coastal lake, the 'Marine Lake'. The structure is large enough to hold sailing events. Swimming is discouraged due to the presence of weaver fish with sharp poisonous barbs. Some of the creatures can be caught by a piece of meat on a cord. I remember yonks ago catching crabs off Cromer pier in Norfolk. If you were lucky then, you got two or three all fighting for a cube of pork! Happy days.
West Kirby is a town on the north-west corner of the coast of the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside, England, at the mouth of the River Dee across from the Point of Ayr in North Wales.
The name West Kirby is of Viking origin, originally Kirkjubyr, meaning 'village with a church'. The form with the modifier 'West' exists to distinguish it from the other town of the same name in Wirral: Kirkby-in-Walea (now the modern town of Wallasey). The earliest usage given of this form is 'West Kyrkeby in Wirhale' in 1285.
On the lake most days and it must be said in all weathers, you can see windsurfing and many more water related activities including: canoeing
kayaking
and occasional power-boating. In early 2009 it was reported that the lake had undergone structural damage, most likely due to estuarine erosion. Since this report a \u00a3750K refurbishment has taken place to help restore the lake, and is now back to holding water sport activities.
In October 1991 the World Windsurfing Speed Record was set on the West Kirby Marine Lake at 42.16 knots. It was held for two years until it was beaten in Australia.
Notable locals from West Kirby include Daniel Craig, the actor who played James Bond in the 2006 version of Casino Royale, who attended Hilbre High School and Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby. Glenda Jackson, actress and politician, attended West Kirby Grammar School.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHX8 - Many of the structures of the Weaver navigation are of historical importance, and are grade II listed. They include the Hayhurst swing bridge and Northwich Town bridge, which are believed to be the earliest swing bridges powered by electricity. Both have a sectional pontoon, which is immersed in the river and carries about 80 per cent of the weight of the bridge. Dutton Horse Bridge, which carries the towpath over the weir stream at Dutton, is one of the earliest surviving laminated timber structures. Dutton railway viaduct, which was built by Joseph Locke and George Stephenson for the Grand Junction Railway, is grade II* listed, and a civic celebration was held on its completion, as there had been no deaths and no serious injuries to the workers during its construction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHTD - A walk along a Glasgow street nowadays doesn't just reflect the city's rich heritage - it reveals how multi-cultural a place it now is.
Last week this column highlighted the church in the West End where Polish soldiers worshipped during World War 2.
There are representatives of almost every country on earth in Glasgow - and most have left their mark.
A walk across Jamaica Street bridge reveals one of the most striking and dramatic images.
Painted on a black wall on Clyde Street is a massive piece of graffiti art depicting a tiger, commissioned in 2010 to mark the Chinese Year of the Tiger.
The tiger is shown chasing a large ball of string and the mural is wrapped round three walls so it can be seen folded in on itself.
But it wasn't the city's Chinese community that commissioned the piece - it was the idea of the Singapore-based Tiger Beer company.
A plaque on the wall beside the tiger explains the reasoning behind what was called the Tiger Lucky Eight project.
It says: Tiger Beer has commissioned a unique series of collaborations curated by Josef Valentine across the UK to celebrate 2010 the Year of the Tiger. Five of these represent the elements of the Chinese zodiac: Water, Earth, Wood, Fire and Metal.
This mural, depicting Fire, was designed and produced by McFaul Studio, whose creative director John McFaul's family hail from the city of Glasgow.
The mural is close to the South Portland Street suspension bridge and strikingly visible from the south bank of the river.
It took the McFaul workers three days to complete the project and a time-lapse Youtube video shows the work from beginning to end in two minutes, 20 seconds.
The end result is an epic, psychedelic, fiery piece of work.
The Lucky Eight project also saw murals being completed in Birmingham, Brighton, London and Manchester

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4469547119 - 'Fiddlers Ferry has been a landmark visable from Runcorn, Warrington and Widnes since the early 1970's. Its a coal fired power station on the banks of the Mersey River, which supplies all its cooling water. In recent years it has been adapted to also burn bio-mass. It can generate nearly 2,000 Megawatts.
Living in Glossop I remember massive freight trains of coal trucks coming over Woodhead and the Dinting viaduct headed for Fiddlers Ferry. Many trains overnighted at the sidings at Gamesley. Fuel for it these days comes mainly from Liverpool docks. Sulphur emissions are reduced by a new FGD plant installed in 2008. Carbon Dioxide is still pumped out of the chimneys as before though to be added to our delicate climate.
Its eight towers can be seen from various high points, including here at the cemetary at Pewtersspear, above Stockton Heath. A modern pub called the Eight Towers (not one of my usual haunts), is located only a short distance away.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23NK - Eastgate, shown here and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building. You know you have been on a visit to Chester when you have an image of this clock in your memory card. To avoid this failure of imagination, this photograph was taken from under the clock mechanism.
Eastgate was originally defended by a timber tower. The road running through the gate led to Manchester, then across the Pennines to York. By the 18th century the city walls were no longer needed for defensive purposes and so, rather than being pulled down, they were converted into walkways. The medieval gateways were obstructing the traffic into the city and were replaced by wider arched gateways with balustraded parapets. The first gateway to be replaced was Eastgate in 1768 which was rebuilt as an elegant arch. It was built at the expense of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, and designed by Mr Hayden (or Heyden), the earl's surveyor of buildings.
Eastgate today is a clutch of upmarket shops, Browns Jewellers, banks and the Chester Grosvenor Five Star Hotel.
