Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EF6BER - Interior view of The Fish Hut, a traditional fish and chip shop on Liverpool Road in Manchester city centre, showing a customer at the counter, a member of stock-photo/gotonysmith-Staff.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>staff serving food in takeaway boxes, heated display cabinets, menu boards and the practical stainless steel counter area of a working British chippy. The visible menu and shop sign link the photograph directly with everyday high street food, takeaway culture and the rising cost of a fish supper, with cod, haddock, chips, pies, sausages, sauces and meal deals forming part of the familiar language of British fish and chip shops. The Fish Hut is listed at 27 Liverpool Road, Manchester, M3 4NW, close to Castlefield, Deansgate and the Science and Industry Museum area, making it part of the food offer around one of Manchester's busiest visitor and nightlife districts. The image has strong editorial value for stories about fish and chips, casual dining, independent takeaways, food inflation, energy bills, hospitality pressures, staff costs, ingredient prices, city centre rents and the squeeze on food businesses and customers. Fish and chips remain one of Britain's most recognisable takeaway meals, but the scene can also illustrate how a simple fish supper has become a sharper cost of living symbol as prices rise across food, cooking oil, white fish, potatoes, packaging and utilities. The photograph shows a clean, modernised interior, with digital screens, a black menu wall, bright counter lighting and prepared food ready for service. The visible customers and staff add human context without making any individual the sole subject. The indoor setting means there is no visible weather, although the lighting and muted window view suggest a daytime or early evening city centre visit. This commercially useful stock image suits features on Manchester eating out, British takeaway culture, fish and chip shops, hospitality economics, consumer spending, inflation, local business survival and changing urban food habits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTWX - Thickly battered fish and chips with curry sauce are served in a white recyclable tray inside a British chip shop, with wooden cutlery and a takeaway-style presentation adding to the everyday fast-food setting. The golden batter, chunky chips and bright curry sauce make the image a strong editorial view of a classic British supper, but it also carries useful contemporary context about the rising cost of fish and chips. The fish could be cod, haddock or another white fish, so captions should avoid claiming a species unless confirmed by the shop or menu. That caution is especially relevant because recent reporting and trade discussion have highlighted pressure on chip shops from sharply rising cod and haddock stock-photo/gotonysmith-Prices.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>prices, with some operators promoting cheaper alternatives such as pollock, and concern about mislabelled catfish, pangasius or river cobbler being sold where customers expected traditional cod or haddock. The image is commercially useful for stories about food inflation, cost of living, takeaway meals, family budgets, chip shop closures, seafood supply chains, fish quotas, imported fish costs, cooking oil, potatoes, packaging, labour costs and the survival of traditional British high street food. It can also illustrate consumer choice, portion sizes, recyclable packaging, casual dining, fast food, comfort food, working-class food culture and regional variations in chippy menus. The curry sauce adds a familiar British chip shop detail, while the thick orange batter and tray setting make the meal instantly recognisable. It is also useful for features on cheaper fish substitutes, clear menu labelling, and how small food businesses balance honesty, affordability and survival. As a documentary stock image, it captures both the appeal and the pressure around fish and chips: still a much-loved national meal, but no longer the cheap supper it once was as ingredients, energy, wages and wholesale fish prices continue to squeeze both customers and shop owners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0WE18 - Taken on 08 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Soaring Rents spelled out in Scrabble letters. The location is Britain , UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains a carefully staged close-up of letter tiles arranged as a readable concept phrase, photographed against a map, keyboard, dictionary page, coins or other context props rather than a plain studio background. The subject connects directly with the continuing housing affordability debate, including rent inflation, mortgage pressure, private renting, social housing demand, homelessness risk and household budgets. The image can be used as a clear editorial, blog or report illustration where a concept needs to be shown visually without using a person, organisation logo or staged office scene. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Scrabble, letters, socialhousing, social housing, housing, UKHousing, spelled, spelt, concept, soaring rents, soaring, rent, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, Briti.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEGY - Taken on 15 Sep 2023, this photograph shows The funeral directors Roman numerals clock, John Blenkiron & Sons, 19 Galgate, Barnard Castle, County Durham, England, UK, DL12 8EQ. The location is 19 Galgate, Barnard Castle, County Durham, England, UK, DL12 8EQ. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. Barnard Castle is a historic Teesdale market town, with stone streets, independent shops and castle associations that support tourism, heritage trails and local retail photography. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include County Durham, Barnard Castle, Galgate, John Blenkiron & Sons, John Blenkiron, Blenkiron, clocks, clock, funerals, funeral, history, historic, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. The photograph should appeal to buyers looking for a grounded visual that says more than a studio icon, because it ties the subject to a real street, building, object or public setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTYF8T - Save up to 8% in gas use, by turning down the 'flow' temperature, a tip from Money Saving expert to reduce fuel bill and poverty
A recent report by the Heating and Hot Water Council (HHIC)* found that households can save around 6-8% in gas just by turning down the heating flow temperature on their condensing combi boiler. To be clear, this is not turning down your thermostat.
Nearly all combi boilers are not optimised to run as efficiently as they should, which increases household gas bills and emits more carbon. Reducing the operating temperature for heating will help your boiler run more efficiently without reducing your comfort.
You will need to have a condensing combi boiler, i.e. a boiler that produces your heating and hot water. You will have a combi boiler if you do not have a hot water cylinder. It will definitely be a condensing boiler if it was fitted in the last 16 years. A condensing boiler will also have a white plastic pipe underneath the boiler (although it can be grey or black).
Most combi boilers have two dials: one for heating (usually with a little radiator icon over it) and one for hot water (with a little tap icon). Some only have one dial but it is usually for the heating flow temperatures. Some dials do not provide the actual temperature setting. Some like Worcester are numbered 1-6, some have dashed lines and others a curved line of increasing thickness. Some user manuals do provide additional information.

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 “ a subtype of influenza type A “ is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2N - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England (and until 2013 also Wales).
Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN95 - Robert Roy MacGregor (Scottish Gaelic: Raibeart Ruadh MacGriogair
7 March 1671 “ 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero.
Rob Roy was born in the Kingdom of Scotland at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were the local Clan MacGregor Tacksman, Donald Glas MacGregor, and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.
In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary MacGregor of Comar (1671“1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James Mor MacGregor (1695“1754), Ranald (1706“1786), Coll (died 1735) and Robert (1715“1754)”known as Robìn Ã’ig or Young Rob.
Along with many Highland clansmen, at the age of eighteen Rob Roy MacGregor together with his father joined the Jacobite rising of 1689 led by John Graham, 1st Viscount Dundee and Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, to support the Stuart King James VII, whose flight from Britain had been declared by Parliament to be an abdication, following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Although victorious in initial battles, Dundee was killed at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, deflating the rebellion. MacGregor's father was taken to jail, where he was held on high treason charges for two years. MacGregor's mother Margaret's health failed during Donald's time in prison. By the time Donald was finally released, his wife was dead.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ETRXC7 - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world.[2]
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

Fuel poverty definition in England and Wales
Until recently, the usual definition of fuel poverty was that a household was considered to be in fuel poverty when it needed to spend more than 10% of its income on fuel “ or energy as it is often called.
However, in June 2013, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC)* published 'A framework for future action' which set out the Government's intention to adopt a new definition of fuel poverty for England.
This new definition states that a household is said to be in fuel poverty if:
They have required fuel costs that are above average (the national median level), and
Were they to spend that amount they would be left with a residual income below the official poverty line.
This also uses a fuel poverty gap - i.e. the difference between a household's 'modelled' (average) bill and what their bill would need to be for them to no longer be fuel poor.
Read the Department for Energy and Climate Change's Fuel Poverty framework for future action
* DECC was closed on 14 July 2016 by the Prime Minister Theresa May. Energy issues will now be covered by a new department called Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Fuel poverty definition in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland still largely use the old definition: that a person is living in fuel poverty if, to heat their home to a satisfactory standard, they need to spend more than 10 per cent of their household income on fuel.
Key fuel poverty factors
The key factors that can contribute to fuel poverty are:
The energy efficiency of the property (and therefore, the energy required to heat and power the home)
The cost of energy
Household income.
Number of households in fuel poverty is rising
The number of households experiencing fuel poverty is rising at the moment for several reasons:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CW6MAC - Clydesdale Bank five pound note, a fiver, with pound and twenty pence coins, Scottish Sterling currency is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. Scottish banknotes and coins make a strong personal-finance subject, especially because Scottish sterling is legal currency but often misunderstood or questioned outside Scotland. The scene can illustrate cash use, regional banking, financial literacy, tourism, retail acceptance, cost-of-living stories and the continuing cultural identity carried by physical money. The location detail, Bank, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include Victorian bank, financial architecture, adaptive reuse, historic pub, cask ale, real ale, pint glass and brewery heritage, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.
