Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTD - A wide-angle view of the main public entrance to the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, photographed in bright summer daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud. The Manchester City club crest is embedded in the forecourt, forming a strong visual focal point that reinforces the stadium's identity and sense of place.
The Etihad Stadium has been Manchester City's home since 2003 and sits at the heart of the wider Etihad Campus, a large-scale sports-led regeneration area developed on former industrial land. Originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium was subsequently adapted for football use and has since become one of the most recognisable sporting venues in the UK.
Manchester City Football Club's recent domestic and European success has elevated the stadium to global prominence, with the surrounding campus now incorporating training facilities, community sports spaces and commercial development. The architecture and branding visible here reflect the club's modern, international profile while remaining rooted in east Manchester.
The image is well suited for editorial use covering Premier League football, elite sport infrastructure, football club identity, urban regeneration, sports branding, and the role of major stadiums in reshaping post-industrial city districts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTJ - A life-size statue of David Silva stands outside the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, depicting the former Manchester City midfielder in control of a football, a pose that reflects his technical skill, balance and calm authority on the pitch. The sculpture is rendered in a perforated, stainless-steel style, giving it a contemporary appearance that aligns with the modern identity of the club and stadium.
David Silva joined Manchester City in 2010 and became a central figure in the club's transformation into a dominant force in English and European football. Widely regarded as one of the Premier League's most gifted midfielders, Silva played a key role in multiple league titles, domestic cups and the establishment of Manchester City as a global football brand. His vision, passing and consistency earned him lasting recognition among supporters and commentators alike.
The statue forms part of a growing collection of public artworks around the Etihad Campus that celebrate club legends and reinforce Manchester City's sense of identity, continuity and success. Its location in east Manchester also reflects the wider regeneration of the area, where sport-led investment has reshaped former industrial land into a major sporting, residential and leisure district.
Photographed in summer daylight under bright but diffused conditions, the image is well suited for editorial use covering football heritage, Premier League history, public art, sporting commemoration, urban regeneration and Manchester's contemporary sporting landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJXB - A view from the Exchange Square entrance of Manchester Arndale, looking out across the square towards Manchester Cathedral and the surrounding cityscape. The photograph was taken in daylight under clear conditions, creating a bright, open atmosphere that reflects a busy and positive city-centre retail environment.
Manchester Arndale is one of the UK's largest inner-city shopping centres and plays a central role in the economic and social life of the city centre. Originally developed in the 1970s, the complex was extensively rebuilt and redesigned following damage sustained during the 1996 IRA bombing, an event that reshaped both the physical fabric and future direction of central Manchester.
The modern Arndale, characterised by glass fa??ades and open sightlines, was designed to reconnect retail space with surrounding streets and public squares, including Exchange Square. From this vantage point, historic buildings such as Manchester Cathedral sit alongside contemporary commercial architecture, illustrating the layered development of the city.
The presence of shoppers moving through the space reflects the recovery and resilience of Manchester's retail core, as well as the continued importance of physical city-centre shopping in an era of online retail. The image is well suited for editorial use covering urban regeneration, retail economics, consumer behaviour, city-centre vitality and the evolving identity of modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWW8 - The Jeanie Johnston, a full-scale replica of a nineteenth-century Irish emigrant ship, lies moored on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin, viewed here from the south bank. The scene is photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, suggesting mild spring or early summer conditions typical of fair weather in Ireland.
The ship's tall masts, rigging and traditional wooden hull stand in contrast to the modern glass and brick architecture of Dublin Docklands, reflecting the city's blend of historic memory and contemporary regeneration. Calm river conditions and soft natural light enhance the clarity of the waterfront setting.
The Jeanie Johnston serves as a floating museum and powerful symbol of Irish emigration during the Great Famine, when thousands left Ireland for North America. Today it remains a prominent riverside landmark, frequently used in editorial contexts relating to Irish history, migration, maritime heritage, tourism and Dublin's evolving urban landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FW - A large street banner carrying the message Trans Is Not A Choice / Transphobia Is displayed in Manchester's Gay Village along Canal Street, photographed at Canal Street, Manchester M1 3WD. The banner is positioned within a public pedestrian area close to historic brick civic buildings, situating the message firmly within the everyday urban environment of Manchester city centre.
Canal Street is internationally recognised as the heart of Manchester's Gay Village and has long been associated with LGBTQ+ visibility, nightlife, activism and community life. Public banners and temporary installations such as this are frequently used in the area to express messages of inclusion, equality and opposition to discrimination.
The wording of the banner reflects contemporary debates around transgender rights and social acceptance in the UK, emphasising that gender identity is inherent while prejudice is a matter of choice. Photographed in daylight, the image documents a moment of public expression within a well-known LGBTQ+ space, providing strong editorial value for themes of human rights, equality, activism and modern urban culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2W - Directional signage for the Trans Pennine Trail photographed in the Latchford area of south Warrington, Cheshire, England. The blue wayfinding signs indicate west and east routes along the long-distance trail and display symbols for both cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the shared-use nature of the path. The Trans Pennine Trail is a major national route stretching coast to coast across northern England, designed to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable travel through a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.
In towns such as Warrington, the trail forms part of local active-travel infrastructure, connecting residential neighbourhoods with green corridors, waterways, employment areas, and nearby towns. The signage reflects consistent national trail branding and supports navigation for leisure users as well as commuters. The image illustrates broader themes of sustainable transport, public investment in cycling and walking infrastructure, and the integration of long-distance recreational routes into everyday urban environments across contemporary Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHBF - Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021
On November 15, 2022, Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 United States presidential election and set up a fundraising account. In March 2023, the campaign began diverting 10 percent of the donations to Trump's leadership PAC which had paid $16 million for his legal bills by June 2023
On August 14 2023, a Fulton County, Georgia, grand jury indicted Trump and 18 allies for racketeering ? among other felonies ? after Trump campaign officials accessed voting machines with election officials. On August 24, Trump surrendered, was placed under arrest and processed at Fulton County Jail, and released on bail. He posted the booking photo on Twitter and on his campaign website with a fundraising pitch. On August 31, he pleaded not guilty.

Trump won the 2016 presidential election as the Republican nominee against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while losing the popular vote. During the campaign, his political positions were described as populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist. His election and policies sparked numerous protests. He was the first U.S. president with no prior military or government service. The 2017?2019 special counsel investigation established that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to favor his campaign. Trump promoted conspiracy theories and made many false and misleading statements during his campaigns and presidency, to a degree unprecedented in American politics. Many of his comments and actions have been characterized as racially charged or racist and many as misogynistic

The first stage Openreach propose to facilitate the retirement of their public switched telephone network (PSTN) is to issue 'Stop Sell' dates for specific telephone exchanges. Once a 'Stop Sell' date has passed, communication providers (CP's) will be unable to order any copper based products if a fibre solution is available at the customer's premises. Accepted fibre solutions include FTTP and SOGEA/SOGFast.
Impacted product and services that will be unavailable beyond a 'Stop Sell' date include WLR3 analogue, ISDN 2, ISDN 30, LLU SMPF, SLU SMPF, Narrowband Line Share and Classic products.
Openreach have identified 581 specific 'FTTP Priority Exchanges' that will be the first to receive 'Stop Sell' notices, see below.
Openreach have not identified the Stockton Heath Exchange as a 'FTTP Priority Exchange' and the 'Stop Sell' date will be September 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX189P - This image shows St Mary's Shrine, a Roman Catholic church located on Smith Street in Warrington, Cheshire, England. The photograph captures the exterior of the building, focusing on its tall tower and red brick Gothic Revival architecture, with pointed arched windows and decorative stone detailing typical of nineteenth-century ecclesiastical design. The church stands prominently within the urban streetscape, marking it as a significant local landmark.
St Mary's has long been an important centre of Catholic worship in Warrington and serves as a shrine church, reflecting its wider religious and spiritual significance beyond the local parish. Churches of this period were often constructed to serve growing industrial towns, providing both religious facilities and a sense of community identity during periods of rapid urban expansion.
The image highlights themes of religious heritage, historic architecture, and the role of churches within English towns and cities. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to Christianity, Catholicism in England, church architecture, local history, heritage buildings, and urban religious landmarks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJPXHJ - BUXTON BREWERY'S FIRST EVER BREW WAS MASHED-IN ON A COLD, DARK, JANUARY 1ST, 2009. THE BREWHOUSE WAS THE FAMILY GARAGE AND THE BATCH SIZE WAS ABOUT 40 LITRES.
The resulting Pale Ale was a long way off what Geoff had in mind, but nevertheless, was consumed with relish after a tantalising wait for fermentation and bottle-conditioning to run their course. Over the following months, recipes were tweaked, altered, thrown away and revived as they searched out information online and in countless books and picked the brains of generous and far more experienced brewers.
Within 12 months, with positive feedback and enthusiasm, the decision to take brewing to the next level and go ?commercial' was made and for a while Buxton ?cuckoo-brewed' at another local microbrewery. In January 2010, with Geoff ?going for it' full-time, brewing on a second-hand 800 litre plant began in earnest.
Fast-forward 9 years and the team, which has steadily grown to be 11 strong is now based in a 7000 square foot modern building on Staden Lane, Buxton. Its custom designed and (British) built brewhouse produces around 3500 litres per brew, 3 times per week.
The brewery makes upwards of 30 distinct brews of all kinds and has many other special editions both planned and in its back-catalogue. Innovation and super-high quality are the prime goals, along with a nod to tradition and an almost maniacal attention to detail.
All of the beers the brewery produces are designed to delight the senses and enthral the drinker. Not all beers are created equal, some are big and strong and full of powerful hops and malts, others are lighter, and have subtle nuances of flavour and aroma. All are intended to be enjoyed as a lovingly hand made product, nurtured by a small team of dedicated beer lovers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38K - Tatton is a constituency in Cheshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Esther McVey, a Conservative.
Constituency profile
Tatton comprises the north-western part of the Cheshire East unitary authority, including the towns of Knutsford and Wilmslow, and a number of villages such as Alderley Edge, Chelford, Handforth and Mobberley, in Cheshire. It also covers a small, north-east, part of the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority, including some of the outskirts of Northwich.
The seat largely comprises prosperous villages and small towns, many of which have high property prices, set amidst Cheshire countryside, featuring country parks, hills, recreation grounds and golf courses. The area was previously dominated by countryside
however, since the 1950s, it has developed a largely built-up, suburban character, being located on the fringes of Greater Manchester. The largest centres of population are Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford. Its proximity to Manchester means Tatton forms part of the commuter belt to the city.
The constituency was created for the 1983 general election following the major reorganisation of local authorities under the Local Government Act 1972, which came into effect on 1 April 1974. It was formed from parts of the seats of Runcorn, Cheadle, Northwich and Knutsford. The constituency is named after Tatton Park, a stately home in this area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3B3 - This image shows the Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street in Belfast city centre, one of Northern Ireland's most prominent cultural and architectural landmarks. The theatre's striking red brick and cream stone facade, with its ornate detailing, circular windows, and domed corner turrets, reflects the Edwardian baroque style popular in the early twentieth century.
The words GRAND OPERA HOUSE are clearly visible across the upper facade, confirming the building's identity. The modern glazed entrance contrasts with the historic exterior, illustrating sensitive adaptation to contemporary access and audience needs while retaining the building's original character.
The photograph appears to have been taken during summer, under clear blue skies, with strong sunlight creating highlights and subtle reflections across the curved frontage and decorative stonework. The reflected light enhances the texture of the brickwork and architectural detailing, giving the building a warm, vibrant appearance. Pedestrians and passing vehicles provide a sense of scale and everyday city life.
Opened in 1895, the Grand Opera House has long been a central venue for opera, theatre, comedy, dance, and touring productions, playing a key role in Belfast's cultural life. The image captures both the building's historic grandeur and its continuing presence as a working city-centre theatre within a modern urban environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYP - This image shows a green conservation area sign clearly stating No public access, positioned at the edge of a wooded landscape. Such signage is commonly used across the UK to ?????????ate areas of land that are protected for environmental, ecological, or wildlife conservation purposes, where unrestricted public entry could cause damage or disturbance.
Restricted access zones may protect sensitive habitats, breeding wildlife, forestry operations, or conservation projects, and form part of wider land management and environmental protection strategies. The surrounding trees and natural vegetation reinforce the rural and ecological context of the sign.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to environmental conservation, countryside management, access rights, land use policy, sustainability, wildlife protection, and rural regulation, as well as conceptual illustrations of restriction, preservation, and environmental responsibility.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYX - This image shows countryside warning signs attached to a wooden farm gate, advising visitors to pick up after their dogs and to keep all dogs on leads. Such signs are commonly used across rural England to balance public access with farming, wildlife protection, and land management.
Dog control notices are particularly important near livestock, crops, and wildlife habitats, helping to reduce disturbance and maintain good relationships between landowners and walkers. The rural setting, with fencing, trees, and traditional brick houses in the background, places the scene firmly within the English countryside.
The warm evening light adds atmosphere while reinforcing themes of responsible access, rural etiquette, and countryside conservation. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use covering dog ownership, countryside access, rural life, land management, public rights of way, and environmental responsibility.

Warrington Borough Council developed and published their Local Plan in 2014 based on population growth statistics at that time, these figures are now substantially out of date. 55 Councils across the UK have now abandoned their local plans as The Homes & Communities Agency confirmed that housing targets are a guide and not mandatory. Warrington Borough Councils plan includes removing large areas of Greenbelt Land all over the Borough for housing developments and business parks.
All areas will be affected
Appleton, Appleton Thorn, Stretton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Croft and Culcheth for housing developments. New roads will be punched through existing areas to access the new housing estates, for example through Grappenhall Sports Club across the Bridgewater Canal, affecting Stockton Heath and Stockton Lane. Another road is planned across fields at the back of Stretton towards the M56.
These areas are all currently green fields, sports fields and wildlife habitats.
All of these areas have new housing stock built in the last 10 years, surely enough Greenbelt has been lost already. There are enough brownfield sites across Warrington for thousands of houses without having to dig up Greenbelt. The Greenbelt areas are the 'Green Lungs' of Warrington, the trees and plants store carbon and clean the air we breathe. The people of Warrington are now saying 'NO' to losing any more Greenbelt. Our elected representatives need to listen to us. During Covid we all learned how important fresh air and open space is to our survival.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y2F - The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a hop-on hop-off rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes which operated until 2014 and 2019 respectively), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge being to introduce a new Routemaster. Following an open design competition in 2008, Wrightbus was awarded the contract to build the bus at the end of 2009, and the final design was announced in May 2010.
The design for the new double-decker bus was inspired by the original AEC Routemaster, and features three doors and two staircases to allow accessible boarding. Unlike the AEC Routemaster, the new bus has a full front end rather than the protruding, bonneted half cab design, and a rear platform with a door that can be closed, rather than being permanently open. The layout of the new bus allows it to be operated by the driver alone. The cost of each bus was ?355,000 over the four-year procurement period. The last of the 1,000 New Routemasters was delivered in December 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JRBY - This image shows the interior door of a former prison cell at the House of Terror Museum on Andr?ssy ?t in Budapest, Hungary. The Hungarian words Beteg szoba, meaning sick room, are visible behind a glass panel in the heavy institutional door. In reality, such rooms were often used not for care but for the isolation, interrogation, or further punishment of prisoners held by the state security apparatus.
The House of Terror Museum occupies a building that was used first by the fascist Arrow Cross Party during the Second World War and later by the communist ?VH secret police. Thousands of people were detained, tortured, and imprisoned here as part of Hungary's experience of totalitarian rule in the 20th century. Cells and rooms like this form part of the museum's permanent exhibition, intended to confront visitors with the physical reality of political repression.
The worn paint, heavy metal fittings, and small inspection opening in the door emphasise the claustrophobic and dehumanising conditions faced by detainees. The image was taken indoors under artificial lighting, highlighting the texture and decay of the materials and reinforcing the atmosphere of confinement and institutional control.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to European history, human rights, political repression, totalitarian regimes, memorial museums, and the legacy of fascism and communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGH56 - This image shows a central carnival stage and temporary seating installed in Mainz city centre for the annual Fastnacht celebrations. The structure features colourful banners and signage associated with Mainz's long-established carnival traditions, with tiered grandstand seating erected to accommodate spectators. The historic sandstone building behind the stage provides a striking architectural backdrop, emphasising the integration of cultural events within the city's civic spaces.
Fastnacht, also known as Fasching or Karneval in other parts of Germany, is one of Mainz's most important cultural events and a defining feature of the city's identity. Celebrations typically include speeches, satire, music, costumes, and public performances, with events taking place in prominent city locations. Mainz Fastnacht is particularly known for its political humour and televised sessions, drawing large crowds each year.
The image captures themes of tradition, civic celebration, seasonal events, and urban cultural life. It illustrates how public spaces are temporarily transformed to host large-scale festivals and communal gatherings. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to German culture, carnival traditions, public events, festival infrastructure, tourism, and the social life of European cities.

Mahsa Amini's death could be the spark that ignites Iran around women's rights
Weronika Strzyy?ska
On the day that news of Mahsa Amini's death spread throughout Iran, a young woman with a shaved head joined protesters who had gathered outside Kasra hospital, where Amini had lain in a coma since her violent arrest by Iran's morality police days earlier.
In her hand she carried a plastic bag full of her long hair, shorn off in a gesture of solidarity with Amini and in defiance of the increasing crackdown on women by the regime.
A week later, and protests sparked by Amini's death are raging in the province of Kurdistan and Tehran as well as cities such as Rasht, Isfahan and Qom, one of Iran's most religiously conservative cities.
The rage across Iran at the brutal pointlessness of Amini's death has lit the fires of protest and the increasing desperation of the authorities to extinguish it are, some believe, a sign of the growing strength and momentum of Iran's women's rights movement.
Women's issues have long been a catalyst for broader political action in Iran, said Annabelle Sreberny, professor emeritus at the Iranian Studies Centre at Soas University of London. This could be it. It could be the moment when people motivated by all the problems facing Iran today, like rising inflation, ecological crisis and lack of democratic participation, coalesce around these women's issues to challenge the regime.
During the past week women have been at the forefront of many of the demonstrations, shaving their heads and burning their headscarves in defiance of the strict hijab law and its brutal enforcement that led to 22-year-old Amini's arrest and allegedly her death.
The women's movement in Iran started in the first month of the Islamic Republic and has been simmering for at least the last 20 years, said Sreberny.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX258 - John Howard FRS (2 September 1726 ? 20 January 1790) was a philanthropist and early English prison reformer.
Howard was born in North London, either in Hackney or Enfield. His father, also John, was a wealthy upholsterer at Smithfield Market in the city. His mother Ann Pettitt, or Cholmley, died when he was five years old, and, described as a sickly child, he was sent to live at Cardington, Bedfordshire, some fifty miles from London, where his father owned property.
Statue of John Howard, Bedford
John Howard was appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 1773,:?9? initially for a one-year period. Rather than delegating his duties to the under-sheriff as was customary, Howard inspected the county prison himself. He was shocked by what he found, and spurred into action to inspect prisons throughout England. Of particular concern to Howard were those prisoners who were held because they could not pay the jailer's fee ? an amount paid to the owner or keeper of the prison for upkeep. He took this issue to parliament, and in 1774 was called to give evidence on prison conditions to a House of Commons select committee. Unusually, Howard was called to the bar of the House of Commons and publicly thanked for his humanity and zeal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NFE - Clayton Square Shopping Centre is an inner-city shopping centre located in Liverpool, England. It is in close proximity to Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Central railway stations. It is the city's fourth largest shopping centre behind Liverpool One, St. John's Shopping Centre and Metquarter. Clayton Square sees tough competition from the likes of Liverpool One, St.Johns, Metquarter, Church Street, Lord Street and Bold Street.
In April 2010, Swedish hardware store Clas Ohlson opened its sixth UK store in Clayton Square occupying the former premises of Zavvi.
All businesses located in Clayton Square Shopping Centre are members of Retail and Leisure Liverpool BID. Clayton Square is one of the key shopping centres within the city, and works in partnership with other stakeholders in to improve the city centre.
In the summer of 2014 a major refit was begun, which was completed in December 2015. The refurbishment converted smaller units into larger retail units, opened the mall to its full atrium height, and public access to the upper floor was removed. The entrance on to Church Street was closed and converted into a unit, which is occupied by Wildwood Restaurant. Half of the floor space on the upper floor was turned in to a Gym whilst the other half will be a bowling alley (Lane 7)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBGX - Matalan is a British fashion and homeware retailer based in Knowsley, Merseyside. It was established by John Hargreaves in 1985, and is still owned by the Hargreaves family. As of 2020, the company employed over 13,000, and had 230 stores in the United Kingdom, together with franchise stores in the Middle East.
John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire. There were fifty stores by 1995, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998, but taken private again by the Hargreaves family in October 2006.
During 2009, John Hargreaves sought to sell off Matalan, but by February 2010, had failed to find buyers willing to meet the ?1.5 billion price.[4] Jason Hargreaves was appointed managing director in July 2013. The headquarters moved to a purpose built site at Knowsley, Merseyside in 2014. The company won approval for this scheme in October 2012.
Controversy
Matalan was among the companies who sourced clothes from the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh which collapsed, killing 1,134, in April 2013. In July 2014, they were the focus of a campaign by 38 Degrees and Labour Behind the Label, for failing to contribute to the official compensation fund coordinated by the ILO. This was in contrast to some of their main competitors, such as Primark who contributed $9 million.
After pressure, they announced that they would contribute an undisclosed amount. It was later revealed that they had paid ?60,000 into the fund, which labour rights campaigns challenged as being an insufficient amount compared with other retailers.
Structure
Matalan Retail Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Missouri Topco Limited, a holding company which is based in Guernsey, and is controlled by the Hargreaves family.
In the Middle East, the Matalan brand is franchised to BTC Fashion General Trading, based in Qatar. BTC have stores in

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K56CWT - GDPR to be scrapped in favour of UK data privacy regime
The UK will scrap the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's data privacy regime, and replace it with an alternative system in the UK, the digital and culture secretary Michelle Donelan has told the Conservative Party conference.
Donelan said the proposed new system, details of which have not yet been revealed, will be simpler and clearer for businesses to navigate.
No longer will our businesses be shackled by lots of unnecessary red tape, said Donelan. We will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly British data protection system.
Our plan will protect consumer privacy and keep their data safe, whilst retaining our data adequacy so businesses can trade freely.
The GDPR, which aims to enhance individuals' rights to their own personal data, took effect across the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in May 2018. It applies to all businesses that process data held by anyone in these regions, regardless of where the business is based.
The Data Reform Bill introduced in the summer is on hold while ministers review their approach. Nadine Norris, the former digital and culture secretary, said in June that measures in the bill would increase financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and minimise the number of cookie pop-ups people see on the internet.
Donelan's speech in Birmingham came after the prime minister announced the exemption of tens of thousands of employers from reporting obligations such as gender pay gap reporting as part of a sweeping package of reforms to cut red tape.
Small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees are currently exempt from regulatory requirements such as gender pay gap and executive pay ratio reporting.
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4CAG3 - The Peak & Northern Footpaths Society (PNFS) is a UK registered charity which was formed in 1894. The purpose of PNFS is to monitor, protect, and improve the footpath network of the North Midlands and North West of England, including the Peak District National Park. The organisation is the oldest existing regional footpath society in the England.
The Peak District & Northern Counties Footpaths Preservation Society was established on 16 August 1894 in the Young Men's Christian Association Hall, Peter Street, Manchester (now St George's House). It had evolved from The Manchester Association for the Preservation of Ancient Public Footpaths, which was founded in 1826.
PNFS has over 150 volunteer footpath inspectors who are assigned to parishes across the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Staffordshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. They walk along their parishes' footpaths periodically to check for any problems, which they report to the local authority responsible for the footpaths concerned. PNFS often helps the authorities to fix problems promptly. Local authorities in the region are legally obliged to notify PNFS of any proposals affecting rights of way, in order that PNFS can uphold the interests of walkers.

The charity has installed over 600 numbered signposts and built dozens of footbridges as part of its ongoing programme to improve walking routes in the region. The first cast iron signposts were erected in 1905 and 20 are still standing from before World War I.
PNFS publishes a quarterly magazine called Signpost.
The Irregulars group of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) organises a programme of weekly walks and in 2019 it became affiliated to PNFS.
In 1994, UK Parliament passed a motion congratulating PNFS on its centenary for its work over 100 years, improving access to the countryside.

The church is part of the Leigh and Hindley Circuit
The church sanctuary is somewhat exceptional in being of a triangular shape (??) much like the sweets called Toblerone and being the first modern church since the English reformation in Culcheth. The older village area under its squire was recusant, and thus the Church of England church serving the village was outside the village at Newchurch. The local Roman Catholic church is also outside the village. Culcheth Methodist Church is now home to the old bell from Culcheth Hall chapel, the squire's private Catholic chapel, which has passed through the other churches to Culcheth Methodist Church for safekeeping, and is in regular use as it is rung to announce services and continuation of worship in many forms in the village.
For safety and proof of theft, all metal and equipment within the church is marked with Smartwater for forensic tracing. The bell is no longer hung in the church, but has disappeared in the refurbishment to enlarge the foyer, and the inability of Methodist Organisation to accept risk of it falling or hurting someone if they bumped into it

He played the whole of his Football League career at Blackpool, usually at right back. Between 1954 and 1971 he played 627 games in all competitions, scored six goals, and spent a decade as the club's captain. He also represented the England national team 43 times between 1959 and 1966, and captained them in 15 games. He was a member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad. After retiring from playing, Armfield managed Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United
Armfield won 43 caps for England between 1959 and 1966, and captained his country on fifteen occasions. He made his international debut on 13 May 1959, against Brazil in front of over 120,000 fans at the Maracan? Stadium. He played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where he was acclaimed as the best right-back in the world. He was also voted best right-back in Europe between 1962 and 1964
In the 1966 World Cup final only the 11 players on the pitch at the end of the 4?2 win over West Germany received medals. Following a Football Association-led campaign to persuade FIFA to award medals to all the winners' squad members, Armfield was presented with his medal by Gordon Brown at a ceremony at 10 Downing Street on 10 June 2009

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRR04F - St Elphin's Church is the parish church of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 AD, and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to tradition the first church was built by Saint Oswald for his companion Elphin, who remained as the first priest there until his death in 679. The earliest fabric in the present church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler.
Most of the fabric of the present church is the result of an extensive restoration between 1859 and 1867 by Frederick and Horace Francis. It was during this restoration that the spire was added. The bells were recast in 1698 and again in 1884. In 1950 they were recast again and the clock was replaced
The plan of the church consists of a wide nave, wide north and south aisles with a chapel at the eastern end of each aisle, a central tower with a tall spire at the crossing, and a chancel

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMWGPR - The British Rail Class 196 Civity is a class of diesel multiple unit built for West Midlands Trains by Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF. A total of 26 units have been built
12 two-car units and 14 four-car units.
They are the first train of the Civity family to feature end gangways.
History
Shortly after the announcement that a consortium of Abellio, Mitsui and JR East had been awarded the West Midlands franchise, West Midlands Trains confirmed they had placed an order for 26 diesel multiple units based on CAF's Civity platform.
The first completed unit started testing at the Velim railway test circuit in December 2019.
The first vehicle arrived at Tyseley TMD in Birmingham on 17 April 2020, having travelled by ship from Cuxhaven to Hull. Revenue services using the new fleet began on 17 October 2022, on services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMWGPW - Chester railway station is located in Newtown, Chester, England. Services are operated by Avanti West Coast, Merseyrail, Northern and Transport for Wales. From 1875 to 1969 the station was known as Chester General to distinguish it from Chester Northgate. The station's Italianate frontage was designed by the architect Francis Thompson.
Work on a ?10 million regeneration scheme, the Chester Renaissance programme was completed in 2007. The development includes a new roof, improved customer facilities and improved access to the station. A plaque commemorating Thomas Brassey is installed on the wall opposite the booking office. The station marks one end of the Baker Way a footpath leading to Delamere railway station.
Scheduled services from Chester station are operated by Avanti West Coast to London Euston and Holyhead, Merseyrail to Liverpool, Northern to Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds and Transport for Wales to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Airport, Crewe, Birmingham New Street, Cardiff Central, Llandudno and Holyhead
Starting in 2005, the station was restored in the Chester Renaissance Project. Improvements made by Network Rail included groundworks around the east end frontage and repairs to the fa??ade's east and west wings, renewal of the roof's glazing, enhancements to the train shed and other general improvements. Improved local traffic management and access to the station was achieved by alterations to Station Square which were completed in December 2007. Architectural lighting was installed in strategic areas and a new concourse was opened by Arriva Trains Wales in October 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, improvements included a second staircase to access the island platform, structural repairs to platforms, restoration of the overbridge and work to enhance the station's frontage.
The station is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building. It is one of 22 Grade I or II* listed railway stations in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN5MTD - Browns was a department store in Chester established in 1780 by Susannah Brown. The store traded from its site on Chester's Eastgate Street from 1791 until 2021. Once regarded as the Harrods of the North, the building interior contains many ornate features such as glass-domed roofs and elaborate plasterwork surrounding small chandeliers in the main entrance area. Some of the glass roof on the second floor has been concealed as it has been covered by the construction of the third-floor extension which contained the main caf?? and Kalmora Spa.
The oldest part of the store is housed in the Grade I listed Crypt Chambers, designed by T. M. Penson incorporating Georgian, Tudor and Gothic facades. Construction was completed in 1858. The building incorporates part of the Chester Rows. On the front of the tower at Row level is a blank scroll, on the east face is a recessed panel containing the initials W. B. (for William Brown), on the west face the initials are C. B. (for Charles Brown) and on the rear face is a scroll inscribed AD 1858: Crypt Chambers. The Gothic facade frontage is built over a medieval undercroft dating from the twelfth century. The undercroft most recently contained 'The Tea Press' tea room.
Another extension to the building was completed in 1965 to link Browns to the nearby Grosvenor shopping centre. A new three-story extension was built in 2002 on the site formerly occupied by the offices of the Chester Chronicle.
It was acquired by Debenhams in 1976. Browns was the only store in the group to retain its own trading name alongside the standard 'Debenhams' branding. Debenhams entered liquidation in early 2021 and all remaining stores closed during May that year. The building is owned by British Land

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMR1J - This ceremonial stone circle was erected around 2,500BC. At present there are seventy-odd stones of heavily weathered local oolitic limestone (see Geology) set in a rather irregular ring about 31m across. They were poetically described by William Stukeley as being corroded like worm eaten wood, by the harsh Jaws of Time
they were said to make a very noble, rustic, sight, and strike an odd terror upon the spectators, and admiration at the design of ?em. More recently, Aubrey Burl called them seventy-seven stones, stumps and lumps of leprous limestone.
The number of stones has changed over the years. Legends refer to stones having been taken away (to make bridges and the like), and it is likely that this created most of the gaps now visible. The stones are famously uncountable, but originally may have numbered about 105 standing shoulder to shoulder. At the time the Stones were first protected as an ancient monument (1883) the owner was reported to have replaced all the fallen stones in their original foundation. In fact the restoration was far from exact: most of the stones that are known to have been standing in their present positions since the 17th century show that it was originally built as an accurate circle.
THE FORM OF THE STONES
Two stones immediately outside the ring (one fallen) mark the portalled entrance to the circle opposite the tallest stone. The Stones stand in a very low bank with a wide gap on the same side as the entrance, possibly resulting from the interior being levelled.
This form of design with close-set stones, a portalled entrance and levelled interior is very characteristic of stone circles in the Lake District ? such as Long Meg and her Daughters near Penrith, and, even more similar, Castlerigg near Keswick, and Swinside north of Ulverston. There are also a few in eastern Ireland. It is therefore likely that the people who built the King's Men came from one of those areas. When they felt the need to build a stone cir

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP9HTJ - The Whispering Knights is a 'portal dolmen' burial chamber that consists of four upright stones and a large fallen capstone. The so-called ?portal' facade is formed by three stones that look like a giant doorway facing down the hill and it was probably intended to be seen from that side. Originally there were two or three more uprights to support the capstone which would have been placed on top, possibly at a rakish angle, to form a table-like 'dolmen' structure. At one time it was believed to be part of a long barrow, but excavations in the 1980s suggested that it is more likely to have been free-standing and intended to impress. The very large pillar-like stone on the left of the portal is the largest of all the Rollright Stones, and with the capstone in place on top (as it was until the 18th century) the chamber would have been even more striking. It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying. Intriguingly, although it looks as if the central slab of the portal should be supporting the pillars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108BX - The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and is one of the largest libraries in the world. It is estimated to contain between 170 and 200 million items from many countries. As a legal deposit library, the British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a significant proportion of overseas titles distributed in the UK. The Library is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The British Library is a major research library, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings. The Library's collections include around 14 million books, along with substantial holdings of manuscripts and items dating as far back as 2000 BC. The library maintains a programme for content acquisition and adds some three million items each year occupying 9.6 kilometres (6 mi) of new shelf space.
Prior to 1973, the Library was part of the British Museum. The Library is now located in a building purpose-built on the disused site of Midland Railway's Somers Town Goods Yard and Potato Market, on the north side of Euston Road in Somers Town, London (between Euston railway station and St Pancras railway station), and has an additional storage building and reading room in the branch library near Boston Spa, in the Leeds district of West Yorkshire. The St Pancras building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998, and is classified as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest for its architecture and history
The British Library was created on 1 July 1973 as a result of the British Library Act 1972. Prior to this, the national library was part of the British Museum, which provided the bulk of the holdings of the new library.

Since 2009, it has occupied 18 spaces and has introduced various projects, such as: pop-up shops, free courses, accelerators, commissioning public realm projects, free events, and the Camden Create Festival. We have an evolving model, but our community of like-minded individuals are at the heart of what we do, as well as the entrepreneurs and stakeholders who help us to grow and support our next exciting stages of development.
Camden Collective is run by Camden Town Unlimited, the Business Improvement District for Camden Town. In the past, we relied on grants and raising revenue to keep up our activities. Now we're fully self-sufficient, with income from lockable offices paying for free hot-desking, running costs of the project, and any renovations needed to maintain our hub, or create new ones
Camden Collective is just one of Camden Town Unlimited's forward-thinking projects. We're the same team that's behind the Camden Highline
a project transforming the disused railway between Camden Town and King's Cross, and Euston Town
a business improvement district with a focus on air quality, transport and identity. We're also the co-founders of Alternative Camden
a new type of innovation district for Camden.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02FC - Frank Pick Hon. RIBA (23 November 1878 ? 7 November 1941) was a British transport administrator. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1902, he worked at the North Eastern Railway, before moving to the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL) in 1906. He was chief executive officer and vice-chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board from its creation in 1933 until 1940.
Pick had a strong interest in design and its use in public life. He steered the development of the London Underground's corporate identity by commissioning eye-catching commercial art, graphic design and modern architecture, establishing a highly recognisable brand, including the first versions of the roundel and typeface still used today.
Pick's interest extended beyond his own organisation. He was a founding member and later served as President of the Design and Industries Association. He was also the first chairman of the Council for Art and Industry and regularly wrote and lectured on design and urban planning subjects

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADE49M - A rubber duck (also known as a rubber ducky) is a toy shaped like a stylized duck, generally yellow with a flat base. It may be made of rubber or rubber-like material such as vinyl plastic. Rubber ducks naturally inspire water play that develops muscle strength and coordination. With their bright color, smooth texture, and (for some) squeaky or quacky sounds, rubber ducks sharpen toddlers' senses[citation needed]. Their presence in the bathtub soothes youngsters' fears of water and water immersion and makes good clean fun of the routine hygiene they are learning. The yellow rubber duck has achieved an iconic status in Western pop culture and is often symbolically linked to bathing.
Sculptor Peter Ganine created a sculpture of a duck in the 1940s. He then patented it and reproduced it as a floating toy, of which over 50 million were sold
Rubber ducks are collected by enthusiasts. The 2011 Guinness World Record for World's Largest Rubber Duck Collection stood at 5,631 different rubber ducks, and was awarded to Charlotte Lee. In 2013, the rubber duck was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame, a museum in Rochester, New York, along with the game of chess. Toys are selected based on factors like icon-status, longevity, and innovation
Rubber duck races, also known as derby duck races, have been used as a method of fundraising for organizations worldwide. People donate money to the organization by sponsoring a duck. At the end of the fundraising drive, all of the ducks are dumped into a waterway, with the first to float past the finish line winning a prize for its sponsor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG42KY - Carpetright Limited is one of the largest British retailers of floor coverings and beds. The company is owned by Meditor.
History
The company was established by Lord Harris of Peckham in 1988 when he opened its first shop in Canning Town. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 1993. In 1999, the company expanded through the acquisition of selected shops from Carpetland and Allied Carpets. It acquired its first operations in Continental Europe in 2002, and in 2005 acquired May's World of Carpets. In 2007, it added the Storey Carpets business, a firm based in Sunderland, which had 54 stores at the time.
Cascade Investment, LLC, the investment vehicle of Bill Gates, acquired a 3% in the company in May 2008. Carpetright expanded again with the purchase of Sleepright UK in 2008. However, in June 2011 it announced significant shop closure plans and that year posted its first loss since 1993.
It was reported on 21 March 2018 that Carpetright was struggling after issuing several profit warnings, and that it was looking at possible shop closures. On 12 April 2018, it was announced that Carpetright would close 92 stores, with a total loss of 300 jobs out of the total workforce of 2,700, as part of restructuring measures
In May 2018, Carpetright secured a ?15 million loan to provide short-term working capital. In November 2019, Carpetright announced that its largest shareholder, Meditor, had agreed to purchase the company. A bid of ?15.2 million was accepted by the company, amid fears it could not pay off its debt. Carpetright have estimated that the company would need around ?80 million to get out of its debt problems. The company's gross debt was evaluated at ?56 million
Carpetright announced the departure of chairman Bob Ivell in January 2020, as the store returned to private ownership after more than 26 years. Several non-executive directors stood down from the board because of the takeover

The Dublin Writers Museum was opened in November 1991 at No 18, Parnell Square, Dublin, Ireland. The museum occupies an original 18th-century house, which accommodates the museum rooms, library, gallery, and administration area. The annexe behind it has a coffee shop and bookshop on the ground floor and exhibition and lecture rooms on the floors above. Dublin stuccatore Michael Stapleton decorated the upstairs gallery. The Irish Writers' Centre, next door in No 19, contains the meeting rooms and offices of the Irish Writers' Union, the Society of Irish Playwrights, the Irish Children's Book Trust and the Irish Translators' & Interpreters' Association. The basement beneath both houses is occupied by the Chapter One restaurant.
The Museum was established to promote interest, through its collection, displays and activities, in Irish literature as a whole and in the lives and works of individual Irish writers. Through its association with the Irish Writers' Centre it provides a link with living writers and the international literary scene. On a national level it acts as a centre, simultaneously pulling together the strands of Irish literature and complementing the smaller, more detailed museums devoted to individuals like James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats and Patrick Pearse. It functions as a place where people can come from Dublin, Ireland and abroad to experience the phenomenon of Irish writing both as history and as actuality.
The writers featured in the Museum are those who have made an important contribution to Irish or international literature or, on a local level, to the literature of Dublin. It is a view of Irish literature from a Dublin perspective.
On display in the museum are literary ephemera and memorabilia, including a detailed replica of The Book of Kells, Samuel Beckett's phone, a letter from 'tenement aristocrat' Brendan Behan to his brother.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF3C - The Countryside Code is a set of guidelines designed for use by both the public and land managers across England and Wales. It is titled as a guide for enjoying parks and waterways, coast and countryside. It was established in 2004 as a relaunch of the The Country Code, which existed since the 1930s.
The Countryside Code is managed by Natural England in England and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Whilst both organisations oversee the Countryside Code, they are each individually responsible for promoting it in their respective country.
The Country Code evolved from the work of various organisations and had several different versions from the 1930s. The most widely accepted version of The Country Code was published in 1981 by the Countryside Commission:
Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
Guard against all risk of fire
Fasten all gates
Keep your dogs under close control
Keep to public paths across farmland
Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
Take your litter home
Help to keep all water clean
Protect wildlife, plants and trees
Take special care on country roads
Make no unnecessary noise
In the 1960s and 70s the Country Code was publicised by several public information films shown in cinemas and on television.
At some point after 1981, the instruction to fasten all gates was replaced with one to instead leave gates as found

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BBXPBB - Astley Green Colliery was a coal mine in Astley, Greater Manchester, then in the historic county of Lancashire, England. It was the last colliery to be sunk in Astley. Sinking commenced in 1908 by the Pilkington Colliery Company, a subsidiary of the Clifton and Kersley Coal Company, at the southern edge of the Manchester Coalfield, working the Middle Coal Measures where they dipped under the Permian age rocks under Chat Moss. The colliery was north of the Bridgewater Canal. In 1929 it became part of Manchester Collieries, and in 1947 was nationalised and integrated into the National Coal Board. It closed in 1970, and is now Astley Green Colliery Museum.
No 1 pit was sunk to 890 yards primarily to win coal from the Trencherbone mine and No 2 pit was 833 yards deep. The shaft was 23 feet in diameter. The Crombouke and Rams mines were intersected by the sinkings. Firedamp was a problem in the new workings and ventilation was a problem. The headgear of No.1 pit survives, it is made from wrought iron lattice girders with riveted plates at the joints and one small and two large wheels mounted at the top. It is nearly 30 metres (98 ft) high and was built by Head Wrightson of Stockton-on-Tees and completed by 1912. In 1912 a twin tandem compound 3300 horsepower winding engine built by Yates and Thom of Blackburn, the largest ever used on the Lancashire Coalfield, was installed at No 1 pit. The company built a smaller cross compound winding engine for No 2 pit, installed in 1919.
In 1923 the colliery employed 1524 men underground and 436 surface workers
which increased to 1631 underground and 492 surface workers by 1933. At Nationalisation in 1947 the colliery employed 1375 below and 561 above ground. The surface workers included women, known as pit brow lasses, who sorted coal on the screens. Women were employed at Astley Green until the mid-1950s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF3X - In sociology and political studies, diversity is the degree of differences in identifying features among the members of a purposefully defined group, such as any group differences in racial or ethnic classifications, age, gender, religion, philosophy, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, intelligence, mental health, physical health, genetic attributes, personality, behavior or attractiveness.
When measuring human diversity, a diversity index exemplifies the likelihood that two randomly selected residents have different ethnicities. If all residents are of the same ethnic group it's zero by definition. If half are from one group and half from another, it is .50. The diversity index does not take into account the willingness of individuals to cooperate with those of other ethnicities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMM8B - Brighton is a seaside resort on the south coast of England that is part of the city of Brighton and Hove, located 47 miles (76 km) south of London.
Brighton's location has made it a popular destination for tourists, renowned for its diverse communities, quirky shopping areas, large cultural, music and arts scene and its large LGBT population, leading to its recognition as the unofficial gay capital of the UK. Brighton attracted 7.5 million day visitors in 2015/16 and 4.9 million overnight visitors, and is the most popular seaside destination in the UK for overseas tourists. Brighton has also been called the UK's hippest city, and the happiest place to live in the UK
In 1985, the Borough Council described three myths about Brighton's economy. Common beliefs were that most of the working population commuted to London every day
that tourism provided most of Brighton's jobs and income
or that the borough's residents were composed entirely of wealthy theatricals and retired businesspeople rather than workers. Brighton has been an important centre for commerce and employment since the 18th century. It is home to several major companies, some of which employ thousands of people locally
as a retail centre it is of regional importance
creative, digital and new media businesses are increasingly significant
and, although Brighton was never a major industrial centre, its railway works contributed to Britain's rail industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the manufacture of steam locomotives.
Since the amalgamation of Brighton and Hove, economic and retail data has been produced at a citywide level only. Examples of statistics include: Brighton and Hove's tourism industry contributes ?380m to the economy and employs 20,000 people directly or indirectly
the city has 9,600 registered companies
and a 2001 report identified it as one of five supercities for the future. In the past couple of years tourists to Brighton and Hove have fallen.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMM8T - The Royal Pavilion, also known as the Brighton Pavilion, is a Grade I listed former royal residence located in Brighton, England. Beginning in 1787, it was built in three stages as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century. The current appearance of the Pavilion, with its domes and minarets, is the work of architect John Nash, who extended the building starting in 1815.
The purchase of the Royal Pavilion from Queen Victoria, by Brighton, marked the beginnings of the site's attraction as a tourist destination. The Royal Pavilion has been changed from a private residence to a public attraction under civic ownership. Today, around 400,000 people visit the Royal Pavilion annually. General filming and photography is not permitted inside the Royal Pavilion. Many of the items in the palace are on loan, in particular from HM The Queen, and one condition of the loans is that the items cannot be photographed or reproduced without prior written permission.
The Royal Pavilion is licensed as a venue for weddings. On 29 March 2014, the Royal Pavilion was host to one of a number of the first legal same-sex marriages to take place in the United Kingdom following the passage of the 2013 Same Sex Couples Act.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDPM6Y - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFEA - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KP0 - The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, otherwise called Carlisle Cathedral, is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Carlisle. It is located in Carlisle, in Cumbria, North West England. It was founded as an Augustinian priory and became a cathedral in 1133.
Carlisle, because of heavy losses to its fabric, is the second smallest (after Oxford), of England's ancient cathedrals. Its notable features include some fine figurative stone carving, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the Flowing Decorated Gothic style in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KP6 - Francis Close (11 July 1797 ? 18 December 1882) was the Anglican rector of Cheltenham (1826?1856) and Dean of Carlisle (1856?1881).
Close was born on 11 July 1797 in Frome, Somerset, the youngest son of the Rev. Henry Jackson Close, who was at one time Rector of Bentworth, near Alton, in Hampshire. Enrolling at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1816 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1820, and was elevated to MA in 1825. During the same time period, he was ordained a deacon in 1820, and as a priest the following year. In 1822 he was assigned as curate of Willesden and Kingsbury in the London area. Two years later, in 1824, he was assigned to Cheltenham and the parish church of St Mary's, and when the rector died in 1826, he was elevated to that office.
Close served as rector for thirty years, where he was a popular preacher and a noted evangelical. He was a vociferous opponent of the Oxford Movement. He advocated for the creation of a training college for schoolteachers and opposed alcohol, tobacco, horse racing and theatrical amusements. He was involved in the provision of new churches in Cheltenham. On 24 November 1856, he was nominated to be Dean of Carlisle Cathedral by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and the appointment was approved by the Queen. That same year, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity upon Close. He remained as Dean of Carlisle until 1881, when failing health forced him to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the oldest of all deans in the Church of England He died in Penzance the following year, on 12 December 1882, and was buried in Carlisle Cathedral

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNP - John Howard, the eighteenth century prison reformer once lodged on this site. The tablet was erected on 31st December 1906 by the Warrington Society. The unveiling ceremony took place in May 1907, on the anniversary of the publication of Howard's work, 'The State of the Prisons in England and Wales'. Mayor Griffith pulled back the green curtain, and addressing those who had gathered for the ceremony, saying that although there had been many memorials to John Howard, he did not think there were any to beat this in beauty or appropriateness, because he was in a way a Warrington man.
John Howard (1726-1790). John Howard became famous for the 'State of Prisons in England and Wales', which was written and published in Warrington in 1777 at Egres Press in Horsemarket Street. He was born in Hackney and the fortune left to him by his father in 1742 allowed him to travel. In 1756, the year after the death of his wife, he travelled to Lisbon. He was captured by a French Privateer and taken to Brest Prison. A short captivity left a lasting impression of the bad treatment given to prisoners of war. He married for a second time and moved to Cardington, near Bedfordshire, where he became the High-Sheriff. He recognised that many prisoners were being held unfairly in prison without being tried and even when they had been found innocent, until family and friends bribed the jailers to let them out. He began a series of tours around Great Britain and Ireland investigating the conditions of prisoners. He wrote about what he observed and made recommendation. As a result of these actions, two laws were passed in 1774, one providing a fixed salary for jailers, the other enforcing cleanliness. Much of the remainder of his life was spent touring the prisons on the mainland and the continent. He visited Warrington many times during his life, for many months at a time. In 1774 he was visiting the northern countries to re-invigorate his prison studies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNX - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

A North Staffordshire oatcake is a type of pancake made from oatmeal, flour and yeast. It is cooked on a griddle or 'baxton'. The oatcake is a local speciality in the North Staffordshire area of England. They are normally referred to as Staffordshire oatcakes or possibly Potteries oatcakes by non-locals, because they were made in this area. In and around Staffordshire and Cheshire they are often simply known as oatcakes.
Derbyshire oatcakes are similar to Staffordshire oatcakes, but while following a similar (or even the same) recipe are generally larger in diameter, and thicker. For example the same recipe will make four Derbyshire or twelve Staffordshire style oatcakes.
It was once common throughout the Potteries for oatcakes to be sold directly from the window of a house to customers on the street. The last producer in this style closed on the 25th of March 2012
however, there are many small commercial premises who sell oatcakes. Larger commercial enterprises exist that sell oatcakes to supermarkets and other large distribution chains.
Oatcakes can be a form of fast food. Catering outlets in the area usually offer oatcakes with fillings such as cheese, tomato, onion, bacon, sausage, and egg.
They can also be eaten with sweet fillings such as golden syrup, jam or banana, but this is less common and frowned upon by traditionalists. They are traditionally re-heated by steaming between two plates over a saucepan of water or nowadays by microwave, though some may prefer frying in butter or grilling.

This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, \u00a32.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was 'the sweet leaf.' ('Sweetleaf' is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!
If this floats your boat, check out some of these other banging tracks, all to be found on the various Black Sabbath compilations out there:
Paranoid
Iron Man
War Pigs
(tell 'em I sent you!).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF7X - Manchester gothic town hall , Albert Square, Manchester, England taken with an IR adapted Canon 5D DSLR camera
Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4337673883 - 'Kevin is the Thelwall ferryman. He rows passengers across the Manchester Ship Canal over to Thelwall Eyes (Often now called Woolston Eyes). These are four man-made areas formed by large embankments for the dispersement of dredging waste, although these days are a haven for bird life. A little bit of countryside on the edge of built up Warrington.
In the ferry office is a small baby Belling, and a small bottle gas heater as source of warmth. It can get very cold in the winter, as at the moment. It is cool in summer however.
Inside the ferry man's wooden box are scrawling's in ink from numerous MSCC employees over the years including the story from 1974 of the ferry man who died on the job. A very interesting wooden lid.
The ferry connects an ancient right of way that was disrupted when the ship canal opened. The MSCC had to provide a means of crossing, a small rowing boat. It is part time and currently 12p per person per trip to use it. A full day pass for unlimited trips can be purchased for 25p.
A tired and weather worn wooden sign near the ferry pier mentions the agreement in 1982 between Cheshire County Council and Warrington Borough Council. Hours are stated as 7:00am to 9:00am, 12:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 (although now 18:00).

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3690682655 - 'A bowl of lovely orange ripe apricots.
The apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is a species of Prunus, classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. The native range is somewhat uncertain due to its extensive prehistoric cultivation.
The apricot was known in Armenia during ancient times, and has been cultivated there for so long it is often thought to be native there. Its scientific name Prunus armeniaca (Armenian plum) derives from that assumption. For example, De Poerderl\u00e9, writing in the 18th century, asserted 'Cet arbre tire son nom de l'Arm\u00e9nie, province d'Asie, d'o\u00f9 il est originaire et d'o\u00f9 il fut port\u00e9 en Europe ...' ('this tree takes its name from Armenia, province of Asia, where it is native, and whence it was brought to Europe ...'). An archaeological excavation at Garni in Armenia found apricot seeds in an Eneolithic-era site. However, the Vavilov center of origin locates the origin of the apricot's domestication in the Chinese region, and other sources say the apricot was first cultivated in India in about 3000 BC.
Its introduction to Greece is attributed to Alexander the Great, and the Roman General Lucullus (106\u201357 B.C.) also exported some trees \u2013 the cherry, white heart cherry, and apricot \u2013 from Armenia to Europe. Subsequent sources were often confused about the origin of the species. Loudon (1838) believed it had a wide native range including Armenia, Caucasus, the Himalaya, China, and Japan.
Today the cultivars have spread to all parts of the globe with climates that support it.

Many of its monuments and statues are connected with big maritime disasters of the early twentieth century. These include the Titanic, Lusitania and the Empress of Ireland. Other associations with the sea are the Liverpool pilot boat disasters of 1917 and 1939 and the loss of the submarine 'Thetis'.
It is a super place for draping yourself around a limestone angel and well worth a train trip from Chester or east from Liverpool.
There is an email address for it. Note that you cannot actually contact the dead, but friends of the cemetery who could probably tell you more if you have relatives buried here (friends@wallaseycemetery.co.uk).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF859 - Gerrard Winstanley (19 October 1609 ? 10 September 1676) was an English Protestant religious reformer, political philosopher, and activist during the period of the Commonwealth of England. Winstanley was the leader and one of the founders of the English group known as the True Levellers or Diggers. The group occupied formerly common land that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops. True Levellers was the name they used to describe themselves, whereas the term Diggers was coined by contemporaries.
Early life
Gerrard Winstanley was born on 19 October 1609, the son of Edward Winstanley, mercer, and was baptised in the parish of Wigan, then part of the West Derby hundred of Lancashire. His mother's identity remains unknown and he could have been born anywhere in the parish of Wigan. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
In 1630, Winstanley migrated to the City of London, where he became an apprentice to a Merchant Tailor. In 1638, he was admitted as a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company, a trade guild. In 1639, he married Susan King, the daughter of William King, a London surgeon.
English Civil Wars
The First English Civil War disrupted Winstanley's business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. His father-in-law helped him to move to Cobham, Surrey, where he initially worked as a cowherd
Winstanley published a pamphlet called The New Law of Righteousness. The basis of this work came from the Book of Acts, chapter two, verses 44 and 45: And all that believed were together, and had all things common
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFF2 - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF3Y - In sociology and political studies, diversity is the degree of differences in identifying features among the members of a purposefully defined group, such as any group differences in racial or ethnic classifications, age, gender, religion, philosophy, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, intelligence, mental health, physical health, genetic attributes, personality, behavior or attractiveness.
