Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9ANFM - MV Syntan is pictured moored on Beverley Beck in East Yorkshire, a restored historic working barge now stock-photo/gotonysmith-Preserved.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>preserved by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society. The colourful vessel, with black hull, green upperworks, red trim, ropes, fenders and flag, sits beside the waterway with residential streets and waterside railings in the background, creating a clear documentary image of local canal, river and industrial heritage. The society states that Syntan was formerly operated by Richard Hodgson's Tannery, carrying hides and tanning materials from Hull docks to Beverley Beck, before those materials continued by road to the tannery at Flemingate. Its own history page says the barge was built in 1949 for Richard Hodgson Tanners and formed part of a fleet of 16 barges based on Beverley Beck. The restored vessel now acts as a museum, heritage centre and community resource, helping tell the story of Beverley's working waterways, leather industry and links with the River Hull and Humber network. This image has strong editorial value for features on Beverley history, East Yorkshire tourism, inland waterway preservation, Humber barges, post-war cargo transport, volunteer heritage charities, boat restoration, industrial archaeology, local museums and community-led conservation. It can also illustrate the decline of traditional working waterways, the survival of specialist craft, the former importance of tanneries to Beverley, and the way modest town waterways have been repurposed for heritage, leisure and local identity. The bright daylight, moored barge, calm water and everyday street setting make the photograph useful for travel guides, history articles, museum listings, Heritage Open Days coverage, educational publishing and stock features about preserved working boats. Syntan is more than a decorative canal boat: it is a tangible reminder of the practical cargo movements that once connected Hull docks, Beverley Beck, local factories and wider Yorkshire trade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EBGJM7 - Historic Beverley Beck scene at stock-photo/gotonysmith-Crane.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Crane Hill Wharf, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, showing a preserved waterside crane beside the canalised beck and a Beverley Barge Preservation Society vessel moored along the water. The photograph captures an important piece of local industrial and inland waterway heritage, with the red and green society barge, cobbled quayside, metal railings, interpretation panel, old loading crane and modern waterside housing all visible in one documentary view. Beverley Beck was historically the navigable water link between the market town of Beverley and the River Hull, supporting trade, cargo movement, warehousing and local industry before road transport took over much of the work. The Beverley Barge Preservation Society is based at Cranehill Wharf and is dedicated to preserving historic river boats, with public-facing heritage activity centred on vessels including Syntan and other restored craft. The image is strong for editorial use around canal history, Yorkshire waterways, transport heritage, industrial archaeology, volunteer preservation, community heritage, historic wharves, restored barges, tourism, walking routes, Heritage Open Days and the changing use of former working waterfronts. The crane gives the scene a clear industrial focus, recalling the loading and unloading of goods from barges, while the preserved boat links the view to living heritage and hands-on restoration rather than static museum display. The setting also works for features about Beverley as a historic East Yorkshire town, local identity, public realm improvements, waterfront regeneration and the balance between new residential development and surviving traces of working canal infrastructure. The overcast sky, winter trees and quiet quayside create a calm observational mood, useful for documentary stock photography illustrating how modest inland waterways still carry local memory, civic pride and visitor interest. It is a distinctive image of a small but meaning

A statue of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, standing pose holding a scroll of plans in his hand. The duke built the crescent area in Buxton but had never been celebrated for his achievement. Two local people commissioned and funded the project which took 20 years to come to fruition, due to the extensive renovations to the Crescent Hotel.
The idea for the statue has been long in the planning, with Sheila previously explaining that it first came about in the late 90s when tourists asked the couple who had built the Crescent and why there was no monument honouring the achievement.
It was commissioned and funded by Bill and Sheila more than 20 years ago but had been put on hold several times as various complications caused set backs to the major scheme to redevelop the Crescent into a five-star spa hotel.
The striking 7.5 ft bronze sculpture - weighing 285kg - shows William Cavendish in his favourite, every-day business clothes - reflecting his reputation as a ˜quiet sort of person'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3B3 - This image shows the Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street in Belfast city centre, one of Northern Ireland's most prominent cultural and architectural landmarks. The theatre's striking red brick and cream stone facade, with its ornate detailing, circular windows, and domed corner turrets, reflects the Edwardian baroque style popular in the early twentieth century.
The words GRAND OPERA HOUSE are clearly visible across the upper facade, confirming the building's identity. The modern glazed entrance contrasts with the historic exterior, illustrating sensitive adaptation to contemporary access and audience needs while retaining the building's original character.
The photograph appears to have been taken during summer, under clear blue skies, with strong sunlight creating highlights and subtle reflections across the curved frontage and decorative stonework. The reflected light enhances the texture of the brickwork and architectural detailing, giving the building a warm, vibrant appearance. Pedestrians and passing vehicles provide a sense of scale and everyday city life.
Opened in 1895, the Grand Opera House has long been a central venue for opera, theatre, comedy, dance, and touring productions, playing a key role in Belfast's cultural life. The image captures both the building's historic grandeur and its continuing presence as a working city-centre theatre within a modern urban environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3KB - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is a historic walled garden in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM39K - Blackpool Heritage Trams are a mixed fleet of restored vehicles that run on the Blackpool Tramway, which runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. The line dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world.[1] It is operated by Blackpool Transport (BT) and is the last surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom. Excluding museums, it is one of only a few tramways in the world to still use double-decker trams.
Most services on the line are now operated by a fleet of modern Bombardier Flexity 2 trams, but a Heritage Tram service using the traditional trams operates on Bank Holidays, select weekdays and weekends from January to December, as well as during the Blackpool Illuminations.
The Heritage fleet is a large fleet of vehicles that were mainly retained from previous generations of the town's tramway operations, as well as some from other locations. They are now operated by Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours between Pleasure Beach and North Pier as standard and can be caught at the 'Heritage Tram Tours' stops, identifiable by a green circular sign.

Consequently, it was moved to the south transept, but it performed no better there, and in 1889 it was sold to Haydock church. The present organ was built in 1890 by Forster and Andrews. The casework of oak was designed by Thomas Bower, architect of Nantwich and the specification was approved by Dr. J.C. Bridge, organist of Chester Cathedral, who gave the opening recital on 21 May 1890.[28] It was partly rebuilt in about 1925.[29] Electric blowing apparatus and a new chamber to house it was added to the church. It was again rebuilt in 1973 by Charles Whiteley and Company, who installed electro-pneumatic action among other additions and repairs. Rushworth and Dreaper made further additions during their 1994 restoration.

Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials. Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last.
The adjacent stocks are separately Grade II listed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC61Y7 - St Oswald's Church, is in the village of Winwick, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847“49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931“32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of £463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of £232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

The close-up view captures the traditional tram destination box, curved balcony railings, cream and green livery and period styling associated with preserved tramway vehicles. Woodside Ferry is a key Mersey waterfront location in Birkenhead, linked with ferry services across the River Mersey and with the town's transport history. The heritage tramway connected Wirral Transport Museum with Woodside Ferry Terminal, giving visitors a short preserved tram ride between the museum, the waterfront and nearby bus and ferry interchange. The image is commercially useful for stories about tram preservation, electric trams, public transport heritage, Merseyside transport, Wirral tourism, Woodside Ferry, Birkenhead regeneration, local museums and the survival of historic urban transport. It can also illustrate the wider history of electric street tramways in Britain, including the way local authority tram systems once served working towns, ferry terminals, docks, shopping streets and residential districts before buses and private cars changed urban travel. The visible destination sign makes the photograph especially relevant for articles on route displays, tramway design, transport signage, preserved vehicles, museum collections and the nostalgia attached to historic public transport. Care is needed with current wording, as the Wirral Transport Museum and tramway have had periods of closure and uncertainty, with plans and funding discussions around reopening and redevelopment reported in recent years. As a documentary stock image, it records a distinctive detail of Birkenhead's tramway heritage, where the Woodside Ferry name, tram balcony and vintage styling combine to evoke ferry passengers, electric traction, museum volunteers and the wider transport memory of the Wirral waterfront.

The cream and green double deck tram, with open balcony and period livery, is one of the best-known vehicles associated with the Wirral Transport Museum and Heritage Tramway. The Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society says car 78 was built as late as 1920 by Brush, but in an old-fashioned design with open upper-deck balconies, and that it was the final tram to survive from Wallasey Corporation Tramways after withdrawal in 1933. Visit Wirral lists the Wirral Tramway and Wirral Transport Museum at 1 Taylor Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1BG, where heritage trams operated to Woodside Ferry. The image is commercially useful for stories about preserved trams, electric tramway heritage, Birkenhead transport history, Wirral tourism, museum volunteers, public transport nostalgia, Woodside Ferry and the wider history of urban transit on Merseyside. It can also illustrate the once-important links between ferry terminals, coastal suburbs and local authority tram systems, with New Brighton, Seacombe and Woodside all part of the historic transport geography of the Wirral. The distinctive destination blinds, polished paintwork, open platform and classic Edwardian-style design make the photograph especially strong for transport, heritage and leisure features. It is also useful for coverage of transport museums, family attractions, volunteer restoration work, route branding, destination displays and the visual appeal of traditional tram design. As a documentary stock image, it records a much-loved preserved tram at Woodside, evoking the era when trams carried passengers between Birkenhead, Wallasey and the seaside at New Brighton, and highlighting the role of preservation groups in keeping that history visible.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRAF - Watchet railway station is a station on the West Somerset Railway, a heritage railway in Somerset, England. It is situated in the small harbour town of Watchet.
History
Terminus: 1862“1873
The station opened on 31 March 1862 when the West Somerset Railway (WSR) opened from Norton Junction (later Norton Fitzwarren), serving as the WSR's original line terminus. Watchet was chosen as the WSR line's terminus, as it had been since the Middle Ages an important regional port on the Bristol Channel. Local iron ore, timber and paper products were exported, whilst from the same time, it had become an important national port for the import of French wine and salt. The commercial aim of the WSR in choosing Watchet as its terminus was hence to provide a wider and cheaper distribution route for goods from the port.
The GWR increased the capacity of the line in the 1930s. Because of the position of the goods shed opposite the platform, it was not possible to add a second track and platform, and a passing loop was constructed at Kentford just 0.75 miles (1.21 km) west of the station. It opened on 10 July 1933 but the signal box was only used during the daytime each summer.
Nationalisation in 1948 saw the GWR become the Western Region of British Railways. On 24 August 1952, the signal box at Washford closed, and the one at Kentford remained open until 7 May 1964 when it also closed. Freight traffic was withdrawn on 6 July 1964 and passenger trains on 4 January 1971.
Preservation
The station was reopened by the new West Somerset Railway on 28 August 1976

After being a bingo hall for many years, it has now been restored as a cinema and theatre, showing classic films and staging live shows
The building is in the Art Deco style, it was constructed in 1932 to a design by William Thornley. It opened as a cine-variety venue. It had an original seating capacity of 1878 (other sources say 1848)- and in its restored state has 614 seats in the stalls, 318 in the front circle and 254 in the rear circle (the balcony). The site involved cutting into the rock.
Compton Theatre Organ
To possess an original Compton Organ is rare, but the Plaza organ is notable in its own right. It was the first Compton Theatre Organ to be built with sunburst decorative glass panels. These can be illuminated in a range of colours.
The Compton organ is a three manual instrument with a unique 150 stop tab layout which was designed for the Plaza and her sister cinema by Norman Cocker the resident organist from Manchester Cathedral and Arthur Ward one of the original Directors of the Stockport Plaza. It has in addition 42 toe and thumb pistons. There are 11 ranks of pipes situated in 2 chambers, one over the other to the right of the stage. These are concealed behind the decorative grill in the wall. There is no electric amplification, as the sound is produced acoustically straight from the organ pipes. The console is on a lift so that it can rise out of the floor, adding to the theatrical effect. As there is no amplification the organist controls the volume using swell pedals that operate shutters in the grill. It was played before shows, and during silent movies, variety acts and musical interludes between films. The organ can supply a large range of effects from sleigh bells to aircraft and sea sounds

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGPM - The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre cinema in Stockport, England (grid reference SJ895905) opened in 1932 and is now a Grade II* listed building.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J4M - Clevedon is a town and civil parish in the unitary authority of North Somerset, which covers part of the ceremonial county of Somerset, England. It has a population of 21,281 according to the United Kingdom Census 2011. It lies among a group of small hills, including Church Hill, Wain's Hill (topped by the remains of an Iron Age hill fort), Dial Hill, Strawberry Hill, Castle Hill, Hangstone Hill and Court Hill which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest along the Severn estuary. Clevedon was mentioned in the Domesday Book but grew in the Victorian era as a seaside resort.
Clevedon Pier, opened in 1869, is one of the earliest surviving examples of a Victorian pier. On 17 October 1970, two outward spans collapsed when the seventh set of legs from the shore failed during a routine insurance load test. A trust was eventually formed and the pier and its buildings were restored and reopened on 27 May 1989, when the Waverley paddle steamer berthed and took on passengers. Clevedon Pier is a seaside pier in the town of Clevedon, Somerset, England on the east shore of the Severn Estuary. It has been described by Sir John Betjeman, as the most beautiful pier in England and was designated a Grade I listed building in 2001.[1]
The pier was built during the 1860s to attract tourists and provide a ferry port for rail passengers to South Wales. The pier is 312 m (1,024 ft) long and consists of eight spans supported by steel rails covered by wooden decking, with a pavilion on the pier head.
The pier opened in 1869 and served as an embarkation point for paddle steamer excursions for almost exactly 100 years. Two of the spans collapsed during stress testing in 1970 and demolition was proposed, but local fund raising and heritage grants allowed the pier to be dismantled for restoration and reassembled. It reopened in 1989, and ten years later was awarded the Pier of the Year from the National Piers Society, and a Civic Trust Award.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKETG - Worcester Cathedral, is an Anglican cathedral in Worcester, England, situated on a bank overlooking the River Severn. It is the seat of the Bishop of Worcester. Its official name is the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Mary the Virgin of Worcester. The present cathedral church was built between 1084 and 1504, and represents every style of English architecture from Norman to Perpendicular Gothic. It is famous for its Norman crypt and unique chapter house, its unusual Transitional Gothic bays, its fine woodwork and its exquisite central tower, which is of particularly fine proportions.
The cathedral's west facade appeared, with a portrait of Sir Edward Elgar, on the reverse of £20 note issued by the Bank of England between 1999 and 2007, remaining in circulation as legal tender until 30 June 2010. Worcester Cathedral embodies many features that are highly typical of an English medieval cathedral. Like the cathedrals of Salisbury and Lincoln, it has two transepts crossing the nave, rather than the single transept usual on the Continent. This feature of English Cathedrals was to facilitate the private saying of the Holy Office by many clergy or monks. Worcester is also typical of English cathedrals in having a chapter house and cloister. To the north side of the cathedral is an entrance porch, a feature designed to eliminate the draught which, prior to the installation of modern swing doors, would blow through cathedrals whenever the western doors were open.
Worcester Cathedral has important parts of the building dating from every century from the 11th to the 16th. Its tower in the perpendicular style is described by Alec Clifton-Taylor as exquisite and is seen best across the River Severn.
The earliest part of the building at Worcester is the multi-columned Norman crypt with cushion capitals remaining from the original monastic church begun by bishop Saint Wulfstan of Worcester in 1084.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFB8 - Queen's University Belfast (informally Queen's or QUB) is a public research university in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The university was chartered in 1845, and opened in 1849 as Queen's College, Belfast, but has roots going back to 1810 and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.
The university forms the focal point of the Queen's Quarter area of the city, one of Belfast's four cultural districts. It offers academic degrees at various levels and across a broad subject range, with over 300 degree programmes available. Since 1 March 2014, Patrick Johnston has been the university's 12th President and Vice-Chancellor. Its Chancellor is Thomas Moran.
Queen's is a member of the Russell Group of leading research intensive universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, Universities Ireland and Universities UK. The university is associated with two Nobel laureates and one Turing Award laureate.
Lanyon took as his source the medieval great halls of
England and the Oxbridge colleges, following the strict precedents of
the raised dais, oriel window, fireplace for the top table, and a
screened passage at the opposite end. These plans fell victim to the
original budget cuts
Lanyon's planned gallery was never built and
the panelling remained modest, the latter not helped by later
redecorations. All of this changed in 2000 with the restoration of the
Great Hall by Consarc Conservation, architects. The floor and dais
were replaced and the oriel window unblocked. New pitch pine
panelling and a screened passage with a gallery above, the
replacement of the missing end trusses, and the comprehensive
redecoration and installation of a new lighting system, have all
combined to create a warm, powerful and theatrical space at the
heart of the University. More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)
has been installed in the gallery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWBN - All Saints Church Thelwall, South Warrington, Cheshire England UK United Kingdom.
All Saints Church, Thelwall, is in the village of Thelwall, Cheshire, England. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
[edit] History
The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by J. Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.
[edit] Architecture
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill.[5] The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros.[1] From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G705 - This documentary stock photograph shows DDR East German security equipment for spying on citizens in Berlin. The image records DDR or East German security equipment and surveillance material, making it useful for editorial features on Cold War memory, state surveillance, the Stasi, civil liberties, museum interpretation and authoritarian control. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6P - The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a full-sized luxury car produced by British automaker Rolls-Royce in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first of the marque to use unitary body and chassis construction.
The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run of 30,057 units manufactured is the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce model
A Bentley-badged version, the T-series, was produced from 1965 through 1980 in 2,336 examples.
The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning manure or crap in German. It was designed with several modernisations in response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation, most notably in its unitary construction.
Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models.
The standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 203.5 inches (5,170 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Left-hand-drive models were coupled to the recently introduced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors (GM). Pre-1970, right-hand-drive (RHD) models used a highly modified, aluminum-cased version of the original cast-iron 4-speed Hydra-Matic gearbox that had been built in Crewe under license from GM since 1953. From 1968, export RHD cars gained the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, and by 1970, the 4-speed unit had been completely phased out even in the home market

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H8FHWE - Photo shows Bridgewater Canal lifting machine crane, Moore, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK. The photograph is useful as a documentary record of a real place, object or public-facing scene. It can support local history, travel, social observation, news features and web articles where authentic context matters more than a polished studio image. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Warrington, Cheshire, Moore, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. The supplied caption gives the main editorial context
visible weather, signage and surrounding detail should be checked on upload. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture. Because this is not a studio setup, the surrounding details matter: pavement, interior, transport hardware, street furniture, shopfronts, people, signs, light and seasonal clues can all help the buyer understand the real-world setting.
